Rich culture and super interesting project.
The location is close to shinsekai, but out of the crowded area, the neighborhood feels much more authentic. The hostel itself is very nice, the staff were very kind and friendly, there was a garden and rooftop and the whole building was decorated warmly and cozy. I would definitely come here again if I ever get the chance
Nothing
Best place to stay in Osaka
Lugar super limpio debo decir!
it's a lovely place with lots of art but unfortunately some of the people working there don't make you feel welcomed.
i was reading in the shared space when someone from the staff just came inside and turned off the lights even though they say me sitting there 😅 that felt strange - i definitely would have turned off the lights when going to bed. this made me feel quite weird ...
Kamagasaki University of the Arts / Cocoroom was honestly one of the most confusing hostel experiences I’ve had in Japan On one side, super friendly atmosphere,, very open-minded social café for the local neighborhood ,cute little garden in the back where you can actually relax with tea, wifi worked perfectly important when you work online. But then… welcome to karaoke downtown South Osaka chaos! The street outside was LOUD. Like… why is someone singing at 1AM with full emotional damage? The beds were also not exactly giving “deep spiritual sleep....More like “temporary survival mattress.” And the funniest part, the staff were sweet people, but almost nobody spoke English. Which made me wonder.. Why run a guesthouse with international travelers if communication becomes a full Zen puzzle? Still… there was something strangely authentic and human about the place. It didn’t feel commercial. More like stepping into an experimental social art project where nobody fully knows what’s happening including the guests. So my feelings are mixed. Acceptable but definitely memorable!
noisy Karaoke around and the mattress
The atmosphere and the inclusive community
De sfeer, het kunstzinnige en gastvrijheid.
Juste super, spécial !
It’s a very arty place with painting everywhere and instruments that you can play. They offer free tasty tea. I needed to change my travel dates, so the very nice staff was able to accommodate my wishes without any extra charges. The location is quite cool: close to Shinsekai area. Showers were clean and nice. The shopping street right in front offers some cool stuff: bought 2 kimonos from a neighborhood store for a fair price.
The room was very warm at night. Plus human smell. There’s an AC available but was turned off at night. No conditioner in the showers.
This is my second stay at Cocoroom. I would describe it as a community center on the main floor with guest rooms above. If you want to meet local people as well as interact with other travelers, the public areas and shared meals are a great experience. The area can look a little rough on the outside, but I never felt unsafe as a single female traveler.
The minor inconveniences of sharing space with a lot of people; hard to find a place to eat if you’re cooking your own meals, using the showers and the bathrooms in the cold hallway… people not taking their laundry out of the washer… the guy next-door to me that snored really loud loudly…
Cocoroom is my home in Osaka and I will keep coming back here. <3
The friendliest staff in any accommodation I was in. They have their own subculture.
I love the warm friendly helpful vibe of the staff all the colorful decorative creative art and the unique atmosphere ✨️ i really love the affordable absolutely DELICIOUS FRESH communal shared meals! I was given the entire dorm room all to myself (guess I simply got lucky an no one else booked while I was there!?) I was really able to get the deep resting relaxation an sleep I needed 😴 😌 & the late morning old jazzy music on the loud speaker on the street outside my window every morning was extremely special magical and enjoyable 😉 ✨️ 🎶 👌 😊
I didn't appreciate the unnecessary extreme cold temperature in ALL the hallways stairways and bathrooms showers/toilets (even sometimes in the kitchen and communal areas) as well as the room i stayed in was unbearably 🥶 cold UNTIL I found a space heater my self... brought it in my room, turned it on, an left it on for many hours....not until WELL AFTER THAT was my bedroom actually a reasonable temperature 😅
Good value for money over all, staff are great, cool concept for sure.
I had a bit of a hard time with the location, a bit rough I would say. It is pretty cool, nice places to eat and definitely alive. For me as a solo women, was not super at ease.
The guest house is a beautiful space. There is art everywhere and an amazing garden in the back. The staff are kind and welcoming.
Convenience location, Friendly for child.
None
Great host, great location, great vibes (love the color and sense of community!)
The room was perfect! I like that blankets were provided as well.

All the staff was very warm and inviting and made a genuine effort to include guest. I loved the art and the home-y feel. They made family meals every day and even though I didn't participate I thought the option was very nice.
Only the rooms were heated but no heat anywhere else so you had to walk around with your coat throughout the hostel.
Only question is, what was that i did not like there, and cant think about any. Place is full of wonders, every corner is interesting, wish i could live there and be part of making it. it is a wonderful place. - Home made lunches and dinners every day - it is a definite must. - garden full of wonders - art is everywhere
….
The concept of this hostel is really interesting. You can borrow small booklets about the local area’s history from the staff, and the building itself offers many corners to explore. I wasn’t initially very excited about my trip to Osaka, but this hostel added many memorable highlights to the experience. Super cheap and okay clean laundry nearby (the hostel has one too, but it doesn't really have a dryer, and it was raining when I was there). Budget-friendly supermarket 2 mins away. Subway entrance 5 min walk. This is not a fancy hotel with top-of-the-line facilities, but the common areas, though not new, are carefully maintained. The room was clean, and all the facilities worked smoothly. Please update the picture on the website with the stone’s status after the polishing process is done!
This is both a strength and a drawback. The hostel is located on a historic shopping/nightlife street with many super cool old shops (the graphic design on them is fascinating). Still, it can feel a bit overwhelming for some people/ some times.
Great for the price, has it's own character and a possibility to connect with others
The place itself overall is incredible; many down to earth (or up in the sky) artists, community-centered activities, the possibility to cook and eat together, the rooftop, the garden, the common room and the musical instruments. The moments spent talking, listening to music, cooking, going around the neighbourhood was one of the best part of my trip and made me want to hang around the place instead of visiting Osaka. I would definitely come here again (in fact I am in a few days as I will fly back from Osaka)!
To not be able to bring Cocoroom back with me.

For lunch and dinner, you can sign up for a shared dinner with traditional home cooked Japanese dishes, very much recommended! It’s part of this hostels spirit of community.
Unfortunately other than that I did not enjoy my stay. There is an unpleasant smell both in the common areas and in the rooms. My room on the second floor went out to the shopping street where people sing karaoke until late at night and the bed was really uncomfortable. Further, the kitchen to be used by guests is not the one you see in the pictures; it’s very small and you can’t really cook, it seems a little dirty, too.
This hostel is a testament to how people from different places and timelines can all connect to one another in a space built for connection. For travellers who are alone, who miss the feeling of home, who love making new friends, this is the perfect place! Every morning, there’s a short morning exercise together with the neighbours, there’s also a communal lunch and dinner you can opt into for a fee. The staff are extremely accommodating and friendly, and you just know they have a heart of gold for their community. For those who simply are looking for a place to stay, this place has everything you need. A clean comfy bed, spotless shower facilities, electrical points, a little pantry, laundry, lockers for your valuables. The location is very central too, with the nearest station five minutes away, and a huge Don Quijote ten minutes away. The only small painpoint if you are in the rooms along the street is that it might be a little noisy at night sometimes, but that’s alright for me :) I sleep better with a little noise. I’ve met so many newfound friends over the past five days… a really unforgettable experience that makes me want to come back to Osaka. 🥳
Absolutely nothing.
This is my favourite place to stay in Japan. Always clean, always welcoming, great location, and absolutely immaculate vibes. They're also a force for good in their community, which is awesome.
I wish we could have stayed longer!!
Lovely staff and guests were friendly. I wish I stayed longer!
Cool, artsy vibe, and really affordable for the very central location. I had a solo room and it was very comfortable and peaceful, with a nice thick mattress.
Mosquito bites at night, boo 😔
Staff were very friendly and the place seemed like a great place for the local community. It was centrally located in Osaka with many places within walking distance and as station not far.
Nothing :-)
incredibly decorated hostel with every inch covered in art. it’s a unique hostel / café / shop with a lovely garden and cosy common area
The location is close to train stations and shops. It is very easy to get to Nara or Hyogo. It is one train away from Nipponbashi station. I booked a private room and it was clean. They accommodated my late check-in and gave instructions for self check-in. The showers were clean, too. It’s a good place with great communication.
The staff was extraordinary and very helpful. The gusthouse atmosphere was very friendly and easy to ge new friends and help from the staff. I found a fantastic sento, recommendation for exhibitions and help in naviagtion my visit to the Osaka EXPO.
The staff were lovely
The location is terrible in a seedy corner of Osaka, I have no idea how they rated so highly on booking.com
