We only stayed the 1 night as my husband was training here the next day I booked the Summer house room 1 again , which is lovely with nice views of the lake
Nothing
Breakfast was lovely
There was nothing we didn't like apart from TV not working
The character and location
The location of the hotel is amazing in beautiful grounds. It’s very quiet and peaceful.
We stayed in the Lake view building but we didn’t have a view of the lake but a view onto a road. There was no net curtain or blind and so we had to keep the curtains closed whilst getting dressed. In the room there was no bright light for putting make up on, the bathroom was a small bathroom which is not an issue other than it was a wet room which once you had a shower the whole room was drenched in water. When we went to breakfast, there was no explanation of procedures. Breakfast was £15 and on offer was a buffet of eggs, bacon, beans and hash browns. Fruit was fruit salad and within a sugary water. There was some cereal and yoghurt. But it was not explained to us that it was possible to order other food and better coffee than the flasked coffee on offer if you wanted, say an espresso. Because I don’t eat meat the breakfast was very expensive for my two fried eggs and fruit. I do not think in any case it’s value for money.
Golf and walking proximity
20 mins wait to check-in and too often struggling to find staff to serve (the execption was breakfast team and also the restaurant staff were great).
Situation
Property a little tired
Nice grounds and scenic
No air conditioning
The location of the hotel is lovely and was the outlook from our room. The check-in process was very straightforward and the staff were very friendly.
The room was rather 'tired' and really should be upgraded.
The location, accommodation and breakfast were all good.
The minor thing was that the details on how to contact reception using the phone in the room where missing. I assume that this was addressed after I mentioned it to the receptionist.
Restaurant and food was delicious! The lady who served us was lovely and very attentive, only high praise for the food served. Our beds were incredibly comfortable! The grounds are stunning as is the overall look of the building.
No staff on front desk when we turned up, hand written not to see bar staff. No idea where the bar is! Got lost! Found the bar only for them not to have a clue that they were manning front desk. 30 min later front desk staff turned up, it was all very rushed and other frustrated guests waiting to check in didnt help. Our room had thread bare carpet and needs redecorating.
Le côté ancien et l’architecture
The building and the grounds where fantastic
Whats not to like !
Breakfast was truly delicious and was cooked to order. All staff were lovely and attentive, especially the young man in the restaurant. Setting was lovely and close to where we needed to be.
Would have loved a ceiling fan in the room as it was warm but we are from Australia and quite used to that so didn’t expect that here in the UK.
The receptionist was very friendly. The food, at evening meal and breakfast, was excellent. Overall a great one night stay x
There was nothing we didn't like.
Excellent location.
The receptionist was extremely helpful.
Mooie locatie en park.
Verouderd hotel en zeer slecht onderhouden. Entree/receptie mist grandeur.
Beautiful surroundings and extremely comfortable bed!!
Too hot in room but there was a fan, unable to keep windows open without propping them up
Stunning surroundings. Lovely Manor House. Great bar and restaurant
Our lake view room had a view of a fence panel 🤣
Excellent Location and grounds. Excellent Breakfast and Dinner Service.
Reception team was poor on arrival. Very pleasant but failed to tell us where our rooms were, leaving us to wander around looking for room numbers. When we returned to the desk to ask, were informed our room was outside and given very vague directions. After searching, we eventually found it further along the road in yet another building.
The setting - lake, golf course, looked like a castle.
We were separate from the main hotel - didnt feel part of it.
We love old hotels and expect idiosyncrasis due to difficulties retrofitting modern features into an old building. We were happy with Most of the little quirks.
there was a general level of TLC needed. Paint, chips in plaster, some wood rot, worn out rugs/wallpaper, dirty walls/doors
Aged grandeur. It must have been a fabulous home a long time ago. Large grounds but watch out for low flying golf balls. Large comfy bed. No view other than hedge.
On check-in, the receptionist said there was no lift, but I had been told that there was. She found out that this was true, but said that she did not know where it was. She asked other staff for help but got nowhere. The room had a massive, dusty cobweb. The TV did not work due to minimal or low signal. The bathroom string light cord was absolutely filthy. Coffee, tea and milk were not replenished. Rubbish bin was not emptied. I rang reception for help and left a voicemail but no-one returned my call. Very noisy corridor from 5:30 am. The handrail with the disabled access was unstable and wobbly. On checkout, the receptionist dismissed my complaints/comments. Very overpriced. The only view was hedging; no sky so the room was dark. Interior lighting was dim.
Beautiful location
Nothing it’s was stunning
Lovely looking grounds
Large dusty cobweb in bedroom. The rubbish bin was not emptied. Coffee, milk and water were not replenished. Very noisy in the bedroom corridor from 5:30 am onwards. TV did not work due to minimal or low signal. The string light cord forr the bathroom was absolutely filthy. Handrail for disabled access was unstable. I rang reception. I got an answering machine so left my message asking a question, but no one got back to me. I was told there was a lift, but the receptionist was unable to find it. She asked other staff for help, but no one did.
The building is undeniably gorgeous. The architecture on the outside is very pleasing and they've done a great job of expanding the hotel in nearby buildings that don't look out of place. The breakfast was OK. Children apparently eat free. The grounds are lovely and there is a big range of wildlife and bird species present. Staff at reception were friendly and did their best to help out with our room grievances.
I booked three rooms - two doubles and a triple. Via booking, I asked that one of the double rooms was accessible. I didn't receive a written confirmation of this but phoned up to check the booking a few weeks before my stay. Another member of my party also called up to confirm the accessible room also had a wet room. Unfortunately upon checking in, the only accessible room they had was a triple, not a double, so they needed to move things around to make sure our party needs could be accommodated. The accessible rooms are incredibly dated with weird musty smells. What they said was a wet room is just a drain in the middle of the room, but the shower is over a tub and not walk in as we would have expected with an accessible wet room. The rooms are also very hot, and while we were provided a fan for our room, others in our group were not, and none were available from reception. The windows in the older rooms open less than a foot so we weren't able to get a breeze from outside. The breakfast was OK but there were limited vegetarian options. They sadly didn't keep the options stocked up, so on a busier morning we were left waiting for food and juices for quite a while. The prices were also different depending on the day or staff - We were charged £30 for two adults on a Saturday morning, and £38 for two adults on Sunday. Overall I wouldn't stay here again, despite the pretty grounds. The room and lack of accessibility really let us down.
Lovely location and very quiet
The room we had was rather tired and needed upgrading, but it was quite comfortable and have a lovely outlook across to the lake.
Easy to find, allowed us to park cars before check in, accomodating to our needs Stayed in Summer Houses our friends in next one-was nice to sit on terrace when we returned and enjoy a glass of wine
Was very hot in room and had to prop window open. Luckily found a fan in the wardrobe which helped
Clen linen on beds and the TV and Kettle worked
The standard of our Lodge room was shoddy with, multiple marks throughout. The tiles in the base of the shower were so badly stained and aged that my wife and I did not have a shower due to there heavily stain-age marked condition. There were 5 x large bags of dirty washing left at the front during the whole of our stay?! (photo's were sent to the General Manager/Reception, of the negative areas and points of complaint, at the time of my initial check-out. The sum result being, the hotel offered a £35 refund for the various aspects of our dismal stay....which, due to an oversight on the hotel's part, they hadn't actioned with Booking.com and, as a consequence, my refund payment will now have taken up to 4 weeks to reach my account! My recommendation would be: 'If/when you book a 'Lodge Room at Donnington Grove Hotel - Make sure it will be one that is to a 'modern' standard and not one that needs modernising!
Friendly staff, excellent breakfast set in a great location.
The decoration in our room was a little tired.
The breakfast was amazing. Because it’s a golf club they are open for breakfast for quite a long time. And they keep freshly cooking and topping up everything on the hot counter. It’s a not overstocked.. but kept topped up sensibly. The staff were all just so friendly and efficient.
Lage sehr schön auf einem Golfplatz.
Möbel abgewohnt, Fenster kaum zu öffnen.
Great location, excellent staff who were really helpful and very professional. Bar was smashing. Breakfast was exceptional.
The building is tired and clearly needs a refurb. Our room was a twin, beds were very small, room could have been a bit cleaner.
Lovely location
Nothing
Friendly and helpful staff, clean room and delicious breakfast. Lovely tea and coffe in the room. We also appreciated the terrace; a peaceful place to relax after a day of travelling and sightseeing! We would happily return to this hotel!
It would have been nice to have air conditioning in the room, given the hot summer days. We opened the windows as wide as we could and ran a small fan during the night, but it was still a bit too warm.
The grounds are so big I didn’t even make it to a boundary. So peaceful with water and golf. Really relaxed bar/food area and massive grand old bedroom with seating area. Also breakfast was 10/10
It could be modernised but is priced accordingly.
Beautiful friendly professional faultless
Nothing
Calme belle chambre.
Stunning location. I've never felt so well in a booking venues: peacefull, beautiful and cozy. There is also the possibility to walking in the park surrounding by a lake with ducks, wow!! I also eat in the restaurant, the waitress' welcome was so kind and warm.
The interior is quite old and basic, not at the same level of the context...
The hotel room was very spacious and the beds were comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and plenty of it.We didnt eat in the restaurant but did have the cheesecake which was superb. The staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and was very peaceful.
Nothing
Nothing
The staff were friendly. The rooms booked were fine although not together in the hotel. One was in the lakeside area. It was a pleasant stay. The grounds are spacious and the hotel looks impressive. Not ideal for anyone with mobility issues as the place is old so lots of stairs to access all places, bar, restaurant and rooms.
The rooms are in need of modernisation, painting and a deep clean.
Didn't have it
All good
What a charming and wonderful place to be. One of the nicest rooms ever. We were feeling like Lord's and Lady's.
We found Donnington grove hotel to be very clean and the room we stayed in was very nice and tidy I would stay here again good vale for money
Location
Poor service
Everything, lovely setting and good food , bar prices reasonable
No negatltives all good
The hotel is in a very peaceful environment. The room was very comfortable and spacious. But the receptionist sent us on a very long wild goose chase to walk to the Watermill theatre that is only 300 yards away from Tee 2.
GOLF: Booked through Playmore Golf app. They didn't have ability to use the app points system for juniors online or on the pro shop so they had to pay full price- which was £1 less than an adult. Never had to do this before. Staff unwilling to entertain helping us out in any way. Felt very awkward and unwelcome, as if trying to have a day out with my children without breaking the bank, was something I should be embarrassed about. The classic old school closed golf culture all good clubs are trying to get away from. Can't recommend it.
Friendly staff - We ordered our dinner in and the kitchen staff was quite accomodating and understanding given we had a world cup match on and too tired to try the beautiful restaurant premises. Food was amazing. The whole family loved it.
If I HAVE to be a bit critical I would suggest to have a bit of space for the kids to play around. There is so much greenery around which is occupied by golfers (which is perfect for the adults) but the kids need to find a bit of space especially during summer.
The character and the grounds
Bathroom needs to be updated
Beautiful setting, and a sense of history staying in this historic building. Helpful understanding staff, when required.
Only being able to stay for a single night.
Met here for a small family gathering. Impressive house and grounds with golf course, fishing. Had a meal in the restaurant which was reasonably priced for a 3 course meal (£30) although menu choice was fairly limited. Room was hot and lacked air conditioning, made do with a fan. Clean room and bathroom, but bathroom could do with a freshen up. Overall a nice place to stay overnight.
Building exterior was beautiful and location in the middle of a gold course was lovely
Unhelpful staff who didnt know the directions to our room and a room temperature of 34° at 6pm in the middle of summer with no air conditioning . We left after an hour in the room, as it was unsafe for our children to sleep in there.
We asked to check in early and reception didnt even ask for our booking name before saing we couldnt check in early. When we did check in reception didnt even know the directions to our room. There was no air-conditioning in the room, only desk fans. The room was 34° at 6pm and therefore very unsafe for our children to sleep in, so we had to leave. When I checked out, reception staff didnt care to ask why we were leaving so quickly. Would not recommend staying here
personeel was zeer vriendelijk, goede general manager
Welcoming helpful receptionist. Large comfortable suite. Excellent location, excellent food and service in bar/restaurant
Positives are the restaurant staff who were excellent in service with smile and very friendly and knowledgeable. Especially on the bar. Food was good but can be better.
Our room was so dated and had a constant humming noise from I think a cooling system and more under our window blowing hot air on day when temperatures were in the 30s. Didn’t sleep at all and no fridge to keep cool water. Not a high end place but then the room was not fit to be booked at all. Reception was a joke, if you found someone there.
The Staff in the bar and restaurant completely make this venue amazing!
Check in was awful. Didn’t give me a key! I thought this was because the lake side lodge- which has no lake view for most of us. Nobody there.
Grounds and patio area.
All looking a bit tired. Breakfast was a bit chaotic with things constantly running out.
Lovely quiet location
Rooms need an update. Attention to detail let the accommodation down- no shower gel in bottle, pair of socks left in the drawer, limited milk, tea etc in the room.
The receptionist was very helpful, especially after dealing with a difficult phone call while we were waiting.
Signage on the drive - it was tricky finding which track to take to find reception and then the room number board wasn't clear. We arrived after dark and could only see 16 on the board until we really got close.
Historical building, well kept facilities. Lovely staff, made our stay feel like home. Premium restaurant with reasonable prices.
Our shower head needs to be replaced. Room 108
Staff were so friendly and helpful, the accommodation was lovely with great views, and the whole place was so peaceful.
The location was good as we were meeting old school friends and it was convenient for us all. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were not in the main building, but a separate building opposite the lake. The room was very tired and had damp stains on the ceiling, and smelt damp. However, it was a reasonable price, so can't complain. Mixed feelings about the food. We had the 3 course deal (£30), but the prawn cocktail was awful - not just mine, everyone who had it agreed. Cheap tiny watery 'prawns' with hardly any sauce. The small amount of sauce was also tasteless. Things were not looking food for the main - but I had chicken supreme and it was really good, and everyone had a good main course. Pudding was a let down. I had the brownie which was just like a chocolate sponge, nothing special. We slept well. Breakfast was an additional £15 which we knew about, nobody was impressed with that - all kept in a warming dish. I don't have a cooked breakfast and there were only two options for cereal - Rice Krispies or coco pops! No musli? There was some mixed fruit and the option for toast which I had and was nice. It would be nice to have the cheaper option of a breakfast that was not cooked - £15 for some fruit and a piece of toast is a bit heavy. No speciality drinks - just instant coffee. It was ideal for what we wanted, but wouldn't be rushing back. BEWARE there is another hotel with a very similar name in the same town - one couple went to the wrong hotel!
The food! Starter and pudding were awful. Dated damp smelling room. No cheaper option for a smaller breakfast.
The building is stunning and the pub nearby was amazing! Hartley inn. And the golf pro let us borrow some clubs and balls for a little practice The patio outside our room was lovely to sit and watch the night draw in
We were in the summer house room. It is an old building and does not have proper insulation and has massive windows and a conservatory so it was absolutely unbearable inside due to the sun shining on all the glass and brick work. It wouldn’t ruin the company to add aircon of some kind. The fan supplied just blew hot air round and round. The room could also do with some upgrading as it’s very old carpet. Also the cleaner tried to enter the room twice whilst we were still in bed. Overall I think the whole place just needs a little Tlc
Location & setting - absolutely fantastic!
Nil
Beautiful property set in fabulous surroundings. Lots of character and spacious rooms.
Bathrooms need attention. Nothing major just bath panels repainted and a general freshen up. No USB sockets for charging phones and no adapter plugs available at reception. Adjoining room was very noisy until about 3am on the Saturday night/Sunday morning.
Nice setting and old part looked really quaint
We were in a separate building that was like a cattle shed. It was dark and smelled of old socks and was really tired.
Stayed one night before visit to Highclere castle. Hotel spacious room had all we needed, beds comfortable. Grounds are stunning. Dinner and breakfast really great.
Nice grand old building
No air con or fan in room, 2 spiders in cobweb in bathroom, room a walk from main building
The room is really large. It feels clean but the chairs were very worn and it raised concern about the other furniture items.
It’s very dated. Reception felt like walking into an old institution establishment.
Location was beautiful set in over 500 acres of ground with rivers and lovely walks
The main hotel which is lovely but really needs a refurbishment, there is no air-conditioning which means the rooms were very hot
Stayed here with my son to split up a journey, our sat nav took us down a road we could not access but got there eventually. Stayed in lake view villa 7, very comfy sleep and the staff provided and extra fan due to the heat. Have recommended an ice machine because in this heat walking back to the main house wasn’t ideal.
The accommodation was not very clean and had very little ventilation due to the windows being screwed shut.
Wry comfortable, clean and accessible
Slight walk from the main building, would benefit from an ice machine near the villas
Location and price
The temperature in the room was unbearable throughout the night
Great location, very helpful staff
No air-conditioning made it uncomfortable
Great location 👌 but was surprised that thier was no air-conditioning. The staff were excellent at reception 👏
Beautiful grounds
Tv very small, meal choices on menus not always available
I went there just for the gold
Upon checking into the hotel, I informed the reception staff, in the presence of a young male colleague, that I would like to play a quick warm-up round between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following morning. I was advised that the pro shop might not be open at that time and that club members were likely to be playing that early. I was specifically told that, as a hotel guest, I could go out at 6:00 a.m. for a warm-up round without a buggy and that there was no need to make a booking because there would be very few people on the course at that hour. At approximately 8:10 a.m., while I was on the course, a marshal approached me in a buggy and accused me of playing without paying. Rather than seeking clarification, he escalated the situation in a manner that I found unnecessary and confrontational. Given that I had acted entirely on the instructions provided by your reception staff, I was extremely disappointed by the way I was treated. What should have been an enjoyable and relaxing start to the day became an unpleasant experience due to a clear breakdown in communication between members of your team.
It was nicely situated. Had a lovely dinner.
The breakfast was not very good.
Location and Landscape
Rooms under invested, no AC, clean but not comfortable
Location was perfect for the function we attended
Nothing, all was good
The grounds are beautiful and the bed was very comfortable.
I rushed over from London to get to the hotel to get ready for a wedding that evening. I waited at reception for 20 minutes, and no one came to check me in. I had to search around the hotel to find anyone at all - I found another guest who helped me locate reception. I was late to the wedding party as a result and missed the opening speeches. Really really poor service. When someone finally came, they pointed me in the direction of my room and asked if it was ok if I let myself in. I asked for them to accompany me so I could check the room was ok. Not overly clean (stains on towels), and pretty dated. The room was also so so dark which made it really hard to get ready and do makeup.
Groene omgeving Gemakkelijk parkeren Vriendelijke bediening
The view and relaxed atmosphere. Very nice duning room and breakfast
The place is dated, the outside patio area unkept with weeds , uncut grass and plant boarders.with few plants. Needs some TLC
Fantastic stay with our 10 month old, all staff were fantastic and such a beautiful old building. Food was also very good and we had a lovely view of the lake
