The rooms were exceptionally clean and beautifully maintained, with stunning views that added to the overall experience. The décor was tasteful and thoughtfully put together, creating a stylish yet comfortable atmosphere throughout the house. The quality of the glassware and crockery was particularly impressive, and the availability of a good selection of spices for cooking was a wonderful and thoughtful touch. Overall, the attention to detail was outstanding. Everything was clearly considered to make the stay comfortable, convenient and memorable. Highly recommended—we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return.

Reviewed May 20, 2026The views were great, the amenities provided were a nice touch, and the house is just an excellent overall space for rest and relaxation in the Drakensburg. Easy to communicate with the host, and Gift on-site, and there's plenty of great locations to explore around the area.
The drain in the shared bathroom between rooms 2 and 3 often got clogged, but would drain after a few minutes. The water filter on the tap in the kitchen appeared to be broken too, but with bottled water available at the resort shop, it was easy to get clean water.

Reviewed Dec 27, 2025We had a four-day stay over Christmas, which was very relaxing. Location was excellent. The house is spacious. Well equipped. Lovely entertainment area on verandah with braai and bar.
We really enjoyed our stay. There were quite a few mosquitoes during these summer months, so a heads-up beforehand would have helped us come prepared. The nights can get very warm, so a flat sheet would also be useful. The Wi-Fi was a bit slow for anyone needing it for work. The shower near the dining room seemed blocked, with some water running onto the tiles, and the prep bowl tap in the kitchen was leaking. The verandah also gets quite warm during the day due to the iron roof.

Reviewed Sep 30, 2025Our stay at Porterfield Guest House was truly excellent and felt like the perfect getaway. The isolated location provided a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility, exactly what we needed. The views of the Berg were absolutely amazing! The house itself was extremely comfortable and spacious, making it a true home away from home. A special mention must go to Pippa (the host) who was wonderfully pleasant and incredibly helpful throughout our stay. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return!
There was nothing major that i did not like. The only 'nitpick' i had was that there seemed to be some construction work being done adjacent to us, which was a small disturbance to the tranquillity of the stay.

The process of obtaining a tax invoice seems to be almost impossible. I have sent numerous messages to the host as well as to Booking.com prior to our stay without any success. We did not see the host at all during our stay. I would have liked to sort it out in person. Housekeeping staff handed and collected the keys upon check in and departure. Still our stay at the property was very comfortable and enjoyable.

1.It is a self catering house but being given one toilet paper for a three nights stay is a minus.At least inform your guests on time to bring extra toilet papers for the duration of the stay 2.We ran out of the fireplace wood on the 3rd night.I informed the owners and we got no wood and no apology on a freaking cold night in Drakensberg .On your instructions it is written that complimentary wood for a braai stand will be provided and after you have to buy your own _ so I thought wood for fire place was a separate issue. 3.The room upstairs did not work for us 2 adults sleeping in that open space this time of the year was a no no.The room has no privacy and the two adults would bump on the roof while going in or out of the room.A room is good for kids but doesn't for adults. 4.The shower next to the dinning room did not work properly,one can either have cold or hot water, but could mix both to have warm water.So two adults from the room upstairs had to take a bath in the bedrooms downstairs which was uncomfortable because it was 2 males using and sharing the bathrooms with females.

No electricity back up for power failures, although there is a fireplace and wood available the house was cold The speed hump on the strip road before entering the property was too high and scrapped both our cars, even when driving over at an angle. The one geyser was not on the first night so we had to share a bathroom

It was a bit difficult to lock the kitchen door. The lights at the braai area were not working - hence we used the portable light.

Pippa, the owner and her assistant Cindy were so welcoming and friendly and we felt so invited and comfortable during our stay. This was highly appreciated and we will surely be back!
Uncontrollable to the owners, the loadshedding is a problem nationwide but they did their best to accommodate us during this challenging situation and having the gas stove really helped in this instance.

Reviewed Dec 13, 2022The hosts hospitality was exceptional! A private and secluded home away from home set against the backdrop of the majestic Drakensberg mountain range! The house is warm and cosy, and Cindy makes sure you arrive back to a clean house after an outing in the valley.
Load shedding! This is obviously not in the hosts control BUT at least the host has a convertor which is able to power TV and some lights.
