What a lovely end to a very tiring journey. Arrived late at night, located our room on the third floor. The room was welcoming and warm, beds super comfy, slept really well after a glass of red purchased from the super cute honesty bar. Thank you, will visit again.

The bedroom was spacious and clean. The dining area was poorly lit.

We never met a single member of the staff. No staff attended the reception desk so signing in was on a tablet. No staff attended the bar. Guests were invited to purchase drinks by means of a QR code. No staff attended breakfast. We were going to have breakfast until other guests warned us that they could see mould on the long life croissants and on the bread. We checked ou, again on the tablet.we never met or saw any staff the whole time we were there. Most hostels are far better than this ‘hotel’.

La stanza era grande e comoda per 4 persone. La posizione è centrale. Comodo il checkin. La struttura è vecchiotta ma proprio questo è il bello. Costa molto meno di altri hotel in zona.

La pulizia andrebbe in migliorata . In generale si vede che c'è bisogno di un po di manutenzione. Mi aspettavo una struttura vecchiotta e questo ok ma i mobili andrebbero rinfrescati.

Pretty village away from the city.

Nous avons aimé dormir dans un château dans son jus, la vue depuis notre fenêtre qui était au dernier étage et le charmant village accessible à pied. Le check-in autonome n'est pas compliqué, il faut bien passer sa paume de main sur le système de la porte de votre chambre pour renseigner ensuite le code communiqué par l'établissement.

La douche sans débit d'eau était difficile, mais le logement convient très bien pour un stop sur votre road trip.

We enjoyed the location as we were looking for a hotel near Inverness. Check-in was easy, and the room was a good size for our family. We enjoyed the bar downstairs and WiFi.

I don't really have anything that we didn't like about this hotel. This hotel had all the accommodations that we were looking for at a fairly reasonable price.

Die Lage ist perfekt für Ausflüge in die giefen der Highlands - das Örtchen Strathpeffer ist so lieblich und entschleunigend - paar super gute Lokale im Ort, Hotel liegt auf einer Anhöhe mit Blick auf den Ort, Check in miss alles mit Handy bzw Internet gemacht werden, gibt keine direkte Ansprechperson vor Ort und auch Code für die Gür wird zugeschickt in automatischen Mails das muss einem bewusst sein Hatten Zimmer 1 von 10 Zimmern - war halt alles sehr sehr alt und alte Teppiche drinnen oft mehr übereinander. das muss man mögen, Frühstück kann zugebucht werden auch vor Ort und Bar gibt es such alles self service keiner anwesend Für 1 bis 3 Nächte in Ordnung - als für Durchreise - Inventar wirklich sehr slt und muffiger Geruch im Zimmer

Le bâtiment en lui même est magnifique. La situation est idéale et le parking suffisamment vaste. La petite ville est vraiment agréable.

le format de l’hôtel sans personnel est très déstabilisant. Les serrures connectées des 2 chambres n'étant pas les mêmes nous avons passé du temps à comprendre leur fonctionnement. Sans personne sur place, il a fallut échanger par email, ce qui prend un peu de temps. les lits d'appoints n'était pas du meilleur confort pour les enfants.

Strathpeffer is a lovely little Spa Village and the Retreat sits slightly up the hill from the village centre. The owners of the Hotel have some useful technology which is both convenient if a little impersonal when checking in.

As an example of a Standard Double Room, our allocated Room 4 was small, and in serious need of decoration. The bed linen (red tartan from Dunelm) had been washed at least 500 times and was shabby and bubbly. The shower room was worse, grotty grout and chipped tiles and a shower that never really drained. This was a dreary room with bed crammed up against a wall in order to fit the shower and loo. Shabby grey rug on the floor and enough condiments for one drink each. The room and the hotel generally fell well short of it's website marketing and at over £140 for the night we felt totally ripped off. We left early without partaking of breakfast as we couldn't really wait to leave. Very very poor experience.

Bokade en natt för familjen utan frukost. Trevligt och mysigt rum. Kom sent och hade tur och fick bord på den rekommenderade restaurangen. Trevligt ställe! Saknade ett underlakan som de snabbt fixade fram. Checkade ut morgonen efter och åt frukost vid bilen.

Was clean and comfortable

No staff on site, loud guests, keycode system that didn't feel safe. Requested an iron for 9am. Communication about this the day before. Noone turned up until 10am. It was my dad's funeral so we had to go to another hotel to borrow one. No apology from the hotel, said that 10am was around 9am when I complained!!! Staff didn't start until 10 and instead of just saying so when communicating the night before, they were just going to make me wait until 10 on the morning of the funeral!

The Victorian house is charming. The staff quickly replied to our messages.

Everything is very old. Poorly maintained. The bath wouldn’t drain properly. The sofa beds provided as single beds are uncomfortable. The air freshener can't be a solution to mask the smell caused by the old carpet. The ‘honesty’ system is an interesting idea for both the bar and breakfast, but there isn’t enough food if you’re the last to arrive for breakfast.

La struttura è bella e curata, ho apprezzato lo stile dell’arredamento. La mia stanza era ampia e pulita; la pressione dell’acqua era buona e così il phon funzionante. Letto comodissimo. Ci sono a disposizione anche te e caffè. Piacevolmente calda e accogliente. Ho potuto fare il check in anche se sono arrivata tardissimo per problemi di traffico, essendo online. Il responsabile è stato disponibile e cordiale. Non ho inserito la mancanza di personale in loco. L’esterno è molto belle e attrezzato con tavoli e sedute .

Posso muovere davvero poche critiche, ma volendo segnalare cose da migliorare, metterei a disposizione lo shampo/doccia dentro alla doccia stessa. Il lavandino non ha il miscelatore ma due rubinetti distinti per acqua calda e fredda ( a me non ha creato problemi ). Ho scelto di non fare la colazione in hotel perché ho letto che è self service

We were expecting microwave oven and TV, which aren't there.

The location is good and the building itself is quite characterful. We had the suite with three bedrooms and a bathroom and it was spacious and clean. It was fine for our one-night stop on a longer journey. The digital room access would work great if you are arriving late (out of hours) - this system worked well.

I would just note that this hotel operates non-staffed. The digital code to access the room worked fine. We didn't see any staff members at all during our one-night stay, which is fine if that's what you're expecting. We arrived slightly earlier than the room was available and had been hoping to leave our luggage in reception but this was not possible since noone was there to ask about secure storage, so we had to keep it with us. Not the end of the world but I hadn't realised there would be no staff at the hotel. We weren't able to make the TV work in the bar and noone to ask. We opted for breakfast elsewhere (nice cafe close by!)

I typically reserve negative feedback for those rare situations where I feel it is essential to raise awareness, hoping to prevent others from wasting precious time and money on inferior accommodation. I origianlly made a Booking for 2 nights, but felt it necessary to depart at 4 AM on the first night, undertaking the two and a half hour drive home while very tired and dissatisfied. Admittedly, my expectations were modest, yet I anticipated a quiet room and a comfortable bed with clean linens to sleep in. Instead, I experienced significant disturbance from bathroom plumbing, constant gurgling and rattling every time the other guests used their ensuite facilities. Additionally, I found myself unable to stop itching in the middle of the night. Upon pulling back the covers, I was shocked to discover dirty sheets that had clearly not been laundered, please refer to my images. Due to the substandard state of the accommodation, I have respectfully requested a refund on two separate occasions. Unfortunately, my request was denied and no compensation of any kind has been offered. Subsequently, I am in the process of reporting the Retreat Hotel in Strathpeffer, to Trading Standards Scotland. Should Hamish dedicate as much effort to effectively addressing and resolving Guest complaints, as he does in crafting his lengthy responses, it might be possible for The Retreat Hotel, to achieve the essential improvements it so obviously needs.

Keine Reaktion auf mehrfache Rückfragen zum Frühstück bis nach dem Checkout. Hier gab es leider nur vorgefertigte Texte, jedoch keine Antwort zum Frühstück, welches recht dürftig war. Kein Kaffee, keine Wurst, kein Käse. Vermieter war telefonisch nicht zu erreichen. Ich frage mich was bei einem Notfall passiert wäre, da es keine besetzte Rezeption gibt.

The village itself is beautiful and the surroundings are great

The property hasn’t had any updating for a very long time. Everything was extremely spartan - eg not even anywhere to hang up towels. Some rooms were huge with little furniture and a lot of wasted space. Unfortunately the bread at the very basic self-serve breakfast was mouldy, and the juice cartons were out of date. One of our towels had what looked like grass stains. The dining room had a strange smell to it. With some investment this could be a really nice lodge, but unfortunately it let us down.

Conveniently located walking distance to places for dinner. Free onsite parking. Clean and comfortable rooms.

Ein uraltes Hotel dass mann mit dem nötigsten etwas aufgemöbelt hat. Hinter einem Vorhang hatte es Spinnweben. Wie waren zu viert, aber nur drei könnten sich jeweils mit dem WiFi verbinden. 2 Betten/ umgeklappten Sessel waren sehr unbequem.

The location was good and the main bed was comfortable.

Room came with a double bed and two futons, which were pretty uncomfortable and didnt feel like they matched the cost of the room. Shower was old with no pressure. Felt like a drizzle rather than a water stream. Did not have the breakfast.

Everything was very poor quality, the bath was disgustingly stained so we did not use it.

The bedding was not only poor quality but hadn’t seen an iron in a very long time, the pillowcases were the same and were too small for the pillows. The whole room was substandard and we only stayed because we couldn’t find any other room anywhere that night. Booking.com really should look at whether this premises should be on their books or not. The bath was literally a health hazard and I have photos to prove it.

Absence totale de personnel , tout se fait en ligne ... La chambre est plus que moyenne au niveau équipement et propreté . La douche : problème d'écoulement d'eau , joints moisis etc... La porte laisse passer la lumière du couloir , allumée en permanence. Le petit déjeuner est un buffet où tous les produits sont industriels et en emballage individuels : croissant emballé , café lyophilisé, céréales en sachet etc...même le porridge est en pot individuel à réchauffer au micro-onde qui trône dans la salle du petit dej . Et cerise sur le gâteau , une caméra de vidéosurveillance vous tient compagnie. Même le bar est en self-service, pas de personnel . Un simple QR code pour vous inviter à payer ...

A bit peculiar that it is unstaffed

It was a very old hotel that Basil Fawlty had abandoned just after he arranged repairing the shower. It had a feel of the Mary Celeste with no staff onsite at all. It just texts you with the code to access your room. The bedside lamp kept fading in and out at night to add to the atmosphere! If you had any issues you could email them? The bathroom was all patched up and had mouldy tiles.

First stay in an honesty hotel. We didn't try the honesty bar or honesty breakfast. Location is brilliant. Short walk to centre of the village with a choice of food offerings. We highly recommend the pizza at the deli in the square.

Shame the bed squeaked and the curtain didn't fit properly so that we couldn't block out the sun to allow us to sleep. Appearance inside of the hotel was not endearing.

No staff present at hotel. Very very bad communication with the hotel. They accused me of having a bad tone when I complained that the Hotel. The check in system and the facilities were not as described on Booking.com. Refund rejected. This hotel is boarding immigrants.

The hotel is located in a nice, quiet village. We booked a family room for one night, and it was spacious with a large wardrobe, which was very convenient.

The breakfast options were quite limited, mainly cereal, bread, and butter. However, the hotel had informed us in advance about the available food options in the village.

Pas d accueil, très impersonnelle. Bref cet établissement ne devrait pas figurer dans le registre des hotels.

Son emplacement et l’architecture extérieur.

Aucun personnel, les chambres minuscules pas de prise de courant. La lampe de chevet n’est pas et ne peux pas être branchée. Au petit déjeuner, rien de chaud. Le grille pain s’est déréglé et a brûlé la tartine qui a provoqué de la fumée qui a déclenché l’alarme incendie qui a hurlée pendant presque 30 minutes, un bruit insupportable, personne n’est intervenu. Le rapport qualité prix est déplorable.

It’s very dated - could use some updating. The fire alarm went off at 8:15 for about 25 minutes, but since no staff is there, it just kept going off.

The retreat perhaps highlights the eths. It all worked fine and there was a total absense of anyone other than other guests. Fortunately for this old-timer one of them could work the telly in the bar.

The beds were okay but basic

We got one towel each which were pretty awful, thin and bleached in bits. No hand towels. There was a poor shower over the bath and no surface to put toiletries other than the corner of the bath or floor.

Schönes altes Kurhotel mit angenehmen Zimmer. Es ist zwar alles etwas in die Jahre gekommen, hat jedoch seinen eigenen Charme. Es gibt kein Personal, das Frühstücksbuffet und die Bar sind self-service, es kann dabei leicht übers Handy bezahlt werden. Der Code für den check-in und unser Zimmer wurde uns per Email und SMS mitgeteilt und hat reibungslos funktioniert.

Die Zimmer sind recht hellhörig.

Das haus hat auf jeden Fall Stil. Aber man merkt ihm das Alter überall an. Check-in etc. hat wunderbar geklappt.

Wasser Leitungen laut - generell sehr hellhörig. Frühstück war bei uns dabei - würde aber generell nicht extra dafür bezahlen. Alles ist Selbstbedienung, generell haben wir nie jemanden vom Hotel selbst wahrgenommen. Die Kommunikation online bzw. per WhatsApp funktioniert allerdings gut 👍

Velice hezké místo k bydlení, klidné, tiché. Personál jsme žádný nepotkali, check-in i check-out jsme provedli elektronicky. Pokoje byli čisté, velké a naprosto dostačující. Snídaně byla toustový chléb, máslo, marmeláda, jogurty, ovesné kaše, musli atd.Ubytování bychom doporučili pro skvělý poměr cena/ kvalita. Děkujeme. Very nice place to live, peaceful, quiet. We didn't meet any staff, we checked in and out electronically. The rooms were clean, large and perfectly adequate. Breakfast was toast, butter, jam, yogurt, oatmeal, muesli, etc. We would recommend the accommodation for its great price/quality ratio. Thank you.

Lovely hotel with cosy room it was very easy to self check in. It is in a good location You can walk to Strathpeffer in 5 minutes.

We didn't see a staff member at all during our one night stay - it was self service check in on a screen with no staff at reception and self service breakfast with no staff there. This wasn't really an issue, just very unusual. I think the bar was self service too.

The house itself and location

The water gurgled in the bathroom pipes and made strange noises all night and especially loud when someone else used their bathroom. I had to stuff a towel into the overflow at the back of the sink to drown out the noise. Breakfast was rather disappointing too

Pretty location, lovely town! if a bit tired and overgrown. Bed comfy, hot water, good shower, good size room, clean, quiet. TV - for movies if you can use someone’s Amazon or Netflix account!

The garden was overgrown, the breakfast was ok but even tho we were only 20 mins into the 8-10am breakfast time, all the bread for toast had been taken by other guests. No staff on site to be seen or heard, to ask for help, or in our case, to ask for extra bread. Check in yourself, help yourself bar, as nobody serving so qr codes to pay or honesty box. Obviously it lacked the service element, and no evening meal opportunities as nobody there! UHT milk. Food all prepackaged long life. Yoghurts, croissants, cereal bars. It all felt too digital. 4 digit code to enter room as no keys.

Nice views from room.

Building was old and badly mantain. Lots of mold in bathroom. We were four and they only gave us two towels and one toilet roll.we complain but never brought us the things. The extra beds were terribly uncomfortable. Breakfast was bad. Only packaged croissant, porridge, cereals. Instant coffee only definitely not worth the 7.5 they charge for it.

Old and tatty hotel. Dated decor and no TV in room. Shower facilities dated and grubby. Room at top of hotel with narrow stairway for the older stayer not great. Honesty bar is adequate and a TV with multiple remotes confusing and unnecessary. We tried to book another local hotel but couldn't.

Benvenuti nel futuro! Per chi avesse seguito la serie TV Altered Carbon, mancava solo l'ologramma di Poe! Analogia a parte, è un buon posto per passare una notte quando intendi percorrere la NC500. A 20 minuti di macchina da Inverness. Personale umano completamente assente ma non è per niente un problema. Location molto bella, servizi senza lode e senza infamia.

The rooms were clean and there was a kettle with tea and coffee selection. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The hotel is away from the main road and it's quiet. I loved birds singing in the morning.

Le lit d'appoint qui n'en était pas un. De plus nous avons dû faire notre lit nous-mêmes... L'ensemble des meubles et la salle de bains vraiment obsolètes. Petit-déjeuner buffef annoncé ne consiste qu'en des boîtes et des sachets, le restaurant annoncé n'existe pas... remplacé par un distributeur de chips...

Un concept (hors saison ?) particulier : aucun humain vu de tout le séjour (hors autres résidents) : check in / out en ligne, petit déjeuner et bar en self service... surprenant !

The location is fabulous for access to lovely walks in forests and along rivers, and to the mountains. The room was clean, large, comfortable and warm, with a controllable room radiator, and towel rail in the bathroom. I loved sitting in an armchair in the window, reading, looking at the lovely view and listening to the spring birds. I love the quiet and slightly faded Victorian aspect of both Strathpeffer and the Retreat Hotel, and the large Victorian bath in the en-suite bathroom was great.

The hotel was largely unmanned with a help-yourself breakfast which was a bit limited in scope and made it feel more like a hostel without kitchen facilities. The village shop is also limited when it comes to healthy food. We ended up going to the wine bar in the village for a decent cup of coffee. Some aspects of hotel room maintenance need a little love and attention - for example the plug in the WHB didn't seal, the water pressure was difficult to control and converting the futons into armchairs was challenging.

Gammalt men lite mysigt hus med självincheckning och självservice-bar. Fungerade utmärkt. Visst är det lite slitet men ändå prisvärt.

Frukosten var som helhet bra men allt räckte inte till alla gäster så där får man nog se till att vara uppmärksam på hur många gäster man har och vad som kan gå åt.
