Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The breakfast was excellent and a good choice of food.
Breakfast was good Great location
To many dogs think they should have separate rooms for people that have dogs as it’s not good enough just to say the room was thoroughly cleaned and there was only a dog there two days previous you could just smell all the sprays
Lovely hotel great setting over looking the sea front, well kept grounds. Helpful staff, plenty of car parking.
Weather was a bit mixed, just into Autumn!
Close to local restaurants for a one night stay.
Very tired hotel. Bathroom basin had a large crack.
Breakfast was brilliant.
There is only Room Service on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. So we had to keep asking for tea, coffee, milk and toilet rolls from reception. Bathroom door had to be repaired, as it wouldn't open from the inside. Room door wouldn't lock, as lock was broken and needs replacing.
Lovely seaviews, lovely breakfast, staff very helpful, superior sea room was lovely, near the sea front and town centre
Would like more choice on evening food menu
This is a Beautiful building that is a little tired and as stated in my previous reviews the rooms are in need of refurbishment. The potential of this building is huge. A fantastic location and beautiful grounds surrounding the property.
When carpets in the stairwell and outdated rooms although they were clean
Good location on sea front. Very good breakfast in fine old dining room.
Paid for a delux ocean view room which was cramped with a small window
Every think was great ,room ,view ,breakfast
Nothink
The location and parking (paid)
Fantastic location. Staff very helpful and friendly. Room was clean with a good seaview.
The breakfast has improved since my last stay, more choice , much better layout and plentiful. The staff are excellent and nothing was too much trouble.
The furniture in the rooms was ok but tired and showing signs of age
Not much other than location
Terrible lighting in bathroom. Bathroom needed updating - awful lighting - overhead shower in bath awful. Water didn't drain from bath. Would be embarrassed to take a foreign friend to this hotel!
Breakfast ok. Good location
Basic room facilities
Great location- lovely room with fab views!
Nothing - will need a refurbishment soon as is a little jaded but you can see what its former glory used to be and how wonderful it will be when it is finished. But we loved our stay - the room was so lovely! The staff were helpful and kind
location, breakfast
the first room we had to change as unclean and carpet was threadbare and the curtains were ripped
Lovely building, but certainly needs a spruce up (external and internal decoration a bit tired)
See above.

Falta de renovación....humedad en la pintura y no funcionaba la n
We love going to the imperial and we usually have the superior room which is always lovely. As we were only going for 1 night we chose to have a cheaper room.
Our room needed some decorating to make it worth the cost of the room. Even down to the waste bin in the bathroom was in a state. Which would cost so little to replace.
The lounge and bar were ok, as was the breakfast.
The rooms are like hostels. They are really, really bad! The beds are terrible, carpets and absolutely filthy and they smell bad! No glasses or toiletries either.
Loved the sea view, balcony and breakfast.
Nothing
Excellent breakfasts in the splendid - 1869 - dining room, evenings in the cosy lounge and the fine and close sea views from my window
A rather brusque reception, despite effusive earlier emails no one actually said "welcome to the Imperial " on my arrival Luke warm water precluded a shower on both mornings A little over priced for what the room offered, I thought
The location
Seriously outdated and the 2 reception staff we saw lacked customer service skills
Room was lovely and helped elevate my holiday experience especially with the good weather. Breakfast was lovely every morning and location was really easy to get to from the train station and to the beach.

Best location for views and central location
Good car parking, spacious room, friendly staff.
Lovely location,we have stayed before and staff always helpful. Plenty of parking.
We booked a twin room number 3 ,not realising it was on the lower level.Rust around Bath handel and sink pipes .It felt very damp as well.Shower curtain lost fixing. There was a portable heater that we put on.It was lovely weather so I don't think it would be good out of season. It was expensive for 2 nights. We usually stay in the big bay window room with sea view.So we were disappointed. Peak season I suppose.Still think overpriced.
Location superb / that is why we booked it Husband recently had a hip replacement so limited mobility Breakfast superb/ Top Notch until day 2 Coffee in flask cold Why didnt you promote your evening meals ? Perhaps an A frame with TONIGHTS MENU as you entered the breakfast room Sad but everywhere except the dining room a little tired This seemed to affect some of the staff (reception was great at all times) Have been visiting Exmouth for over 75 years We so thing it has always been undersold
Paying for car Park !! Why not hide in overall cost of accommodation ? Gives such bad vibes
Great staff, great location. Bonus being able to park.
Could feel the springs in the mattresses so didn't sleep very well. Although there was a lift you strangely have to go up a couple of stairs and then back down a flight of stairs to get to your room.
The location
The lift was slow and dated, the window did not stay open unless you used a wooden block to rest it on that was left on the window sill, the television needed updating and was strangely positioned behind the tele. The externals of the building are in need of updating along with the rooms
Lovely grounds and old building but really up together.
Nothing to dislike
Nice size room in great location
The hotel is dated and needs reinvestment. The towel rail in the bathroom was in a dangerous condition,Material was peeling off on the bedbase.
The room was spacious, the bed was huge, there were tea and coffee facilities, large wardrobe, TV, hairdryer, fan. The breakfast was good, the bar area and balcony and gardens were beautiful. Only minutes from the beach. Cannot wait to stay again!
Our fault for not booking one, but next time we will go for a room with a balcony and a sea view.
Breakfast was great. Location was excellent, just by the beach and near to town centre
Room was small and poorly ventilated (weather was hot). Buildings are looking a little tired.
The location
Really tired looking hotel, I paid extra for the superior room and it looked like a standard room very disappointed and would not recommend.
Well located for the beach. Dog friendly room with patio doors for quick access to grass.
It looked grand from the road and was quite central and easy to find. The breakfast was good with a fair selection of standard items like bacon sausages scrambled eggs. Fried eggs were available if you asked. Juice was good. Room shower was good although a big step down to the floor.
The property was tired with worn carpets and chairs in the breakfast room. We wanted to have our evening meal there but choice was limited especially as two items were no longer available … sold out. We went to local pub instead. We thought the £6 parking fee was unnecessary and better to have been just part of the booking.
Lovely spacious room with great sea views . Big bay window and extra side window. 7 opening lights so not too hot even in the heatwave. Good breakfast. Good public spaces including outdoor spaces. Good lift
The bathroom felt a little small and dowdy, though it was perfectly clean and functioned very well
Location is 100%. Room was clean and comfortable and as it faced the car park wasn’t too hot. Staff are all friendly. Car park is large and reasonable to park.
Slowest lift ever. One morning I had no hot water but the hotel was full so maybe I should have risen earlier. Would be nice to have water in room. Bar staff provided carafe for me to take upstairs so thank you for that.
Ideal location on the seafront. 5min walk to the town centre. Lovely room. Comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean. Friendly & very helpful staff. Excellent breakfast, well cooked & hot.
Bien placé et bon petit déjeuner Personnel sympathique
Salle de bain un peu mal organisée
Great location for everything
Location by the beach in lovely Exmouth. Easy access to beach and the town (5min walk each way). Comfortable room with outside balcony. Very clean and tidy. Comfy bed, nice towels. Lovely staff. Would def stay again. Able to walk to the train and buses to tour area meant we didn’t need to use the car. Exmouth has a great choice of restaurants and bars with free live music. Recommend the Rover Ex cafe for a treat (book well in advance) and the Pavilion theatre.
Paying for parking, I know it’s not unusual these days but it irritates me. Room service provided on 3 days per week, meant we had to ask for teabags and milk from reception on one day. I totally understand and support less room service, but extra beverage supplies should be left in the room to cover the days of no service.
The breakfast was very good and location of hotel was excellent
Walk in showers would be nice rather than bath with shower over
Staff incredibly pleasant and helpful. The Sea View from our room was excellent, along with the balcony. Good parking. Good access inside via lift. Excellent location.
No fridge in room - shockingly ignoring the current climate. Evening dinner negligible. No useful draws in room. Poor loo paper. A replacement TV? We got the impression the place, or at least the room, might have been emptied by the previous owner, and the new owner had put in the bare minimum room facilities to stay open? Room cleaning was below average; bathroom totally missed on one day, balcony not cleaned at all - table filthy.
Had a wonderful room with balcony over looking the garden and sea Fantastic situation
Just little cleaning errors, also matteress cover stained.
The hotel was ideally situated for access to the main town and to the sea front. Room was large and well appointed if decor a little tired. Car parking was available on site although at a cost - £6 per night
The hotel, although impressive to look at, was on the tired side. Enquired about a lift because of mobility problems and told that there was a lift BUT not told that it did not serve all floors. Ended up having two flights of stairs to negotiate. There was an issue with room lights tripping on several occasions and the lack of a phone line to Reception meant that we could not report it immediately.
We liked the location, being right on the seafront. Parking on site was a bonus. The hotel was quirky, if a little dated. However the rooms were comfortable, although very warm.
The room was hot, probably due to the exceptional heatwaves this summer. However a fan was provided and we were able to open the window.
Location is perfect.
Tired interior. Rooms in desperate need of a make over. Beds are old and uncomfortable and I dread to think what lived in the carpets!!!
Location. Very obliging staff.
Paying for parking. Poor standard of room compared with expectations.
Its position, nice grounds..
Hotel in a very poor state, old furniture, old carpets, bathrooms very dated, poor breakfast, having to pay £6 a night to park car.
Location and price
My wife and I been coming to the imperial now for over 10 years and i coming to Exmouth since 1967 it’s a great place to take the family plus this year the weather was excellent
Sehr gute Lage, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und Restaurants fussläufig, genügend Parkmöglichkeiten, hervorragende Aussicht, Ruhig, umfangreiches Frühstücksbuffet
Zimmer sind renovierungsbedürftig.
Excellent breakfast very good choose. Quick and very good service
Can’t think of anything that would have improved ourstay
Great location, roughly eqidistant between the premier seafront restaurants - Rockfish (distinctly average) and Heydays (brilliant). Good car-park (extra cost) with but with wide spaces. We didn't opt for breakfast because the town is so close - can recommend the Bayleaf Cafe in the square. Staff are universally friendly and helpful. The Imperial has a wonderful opportunity it is a hotel that has seen better days for sure but has massive potential should the investment be made - so close to being the best hotel option in Exmouth
Nothing - just needs sove investment and love.
Breakfast was amazing. Such a variety of choice and any requests met without an issue. Perfect.
Nothing
Lovely breakfasts, air-conditioned lounge with sea views, friendliness of staff, spacious room.
nothing for us
Really good accommodation very comfortable
Very friendly
Great location
A little tired but still really good
The room was a generous size and well decorated. The location was excellent and the sea view was better than expected. Self service breakfast was fresh and plentiful.
We had really nice stay. The location suited us fine for a 1 night stay thank you
Nothing.it was fine
The staff was all very friendly. Location is perfect, 1 minute to the beach 3 minutes to the town centre. The bed is extremely large and Comfy.
Both inside and outside of the hotel need some TLC. It is very run down shabby looking and quite dirty. The pictures on booking.com do not reflect the reality of what it looks like now. I’m not sure if they are AI created images or taken 10 years ago but it is 1 million miles off reality. I think for £146 a night for a double room is extremely expensive for what you get. This did not include breakfast. We was also charged more at the hotel than what was stated on booking.com. The room was quite dirty, dirty shower curtain, holes in the walls, paint missing off was, screw and walls plugs randomly hanging out of the walls. No filter in the kettle so your tea was full of lime scale. No bedside table, only one plug socket at the other end of the room. Window directly facing car park so zero privacy so had to have curtain shut when in the room as everyone looks in. If I paid £70/80 a night I wouldn’t be bothered but when you pay £146 a night and the images show different you expect a lot better. Really really not value for money. We have travelled over to stay in another hotel in Bude at £80 a night and it is far far better.
I booked a double bed but was given a room with two singles
Close to the beach. Parking on site. Friendly staff.
Tired decor throughout.
Friendly staff, great location and nice breakfast.
Building needs a little tlc
Hotel has a beautiful setting and we had an excellent view from our room. The reception staff on all three days were very friendly and helpful. We always receive a lovely warm welcome back each time we stay. Thank you. Regards Raymond and Hazel
The cracked wash hand basin and poor lighting in the bathroom. It’s a lovely building but is ready to be refurbished. Apparently this will happen in 2028… let’s hope the prices won’t spike to a level where we can’t stay there!
Location mainly and its character and history
Nothing
Everything I arrived in the early hours of the morning checked ready got a lovely hot chocolate
Nothing
The staff are very friendly and the view was amazing
Hotel was in a superb location, with grounds that reached right to the sea front. Our room was on the ground floor with direct access to the ground which was perfect as we had our dog with us. The room was well appointed with free WiFi. We enjoyed an evening meal in the bar and ŵere well served. The view was beautiful.
The bathroom was clean and functional but a little tired.
Perfect location for beach and town centre
It’s a bit tired and could do with some refurbishments
Great location
The bed was awful! worst night sleep of if I got out the bed my partner nearly fell out the carpet was filthy the room smelt awful (I actually toke an air freshener from the hall way and put it in our room)
Great location, small but clean rooms. Adequate tho. Breakfast was good and plentiful
Charging me £6 a night to park my car when I’m a resident is scandalous. They also tried to charge my sister twice for her room and then tried to charge me a second time when I was checking out. Poor organisation
Room was clean. Bar and Restaurant decorated well, nice atmosphere.
Could not open window so room smells musty
Great location on the sea front and very close to the relatives we were visiting. Comfy bed , excellent breakfast, plenty of parking and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I feel more use could have been made of the extensive gardens, even taking into account of the hot dry summer we are experiencing.
Location by beach. Friendly staff.
Excellent location, much improved breakfast. Very helpful and friendly staff
No Tetley beer on tap anymore would benefit from having a draft beer available.
The view of the beach was lovely. The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean with comfortable beds. The cereal bar for breakfast was good.
It needs doing up. It was a bit like an old student room. The cooked breakfast wasn't brilliant.
The only benefit was that the hotel was practically on the beach
It was very tired and everything should be replaced
The location was excellent! The room was stunning! Michael on reception was very welcoming and soo helpful 👍
Nothing
Location & breakfast
Room a little dated
Location, location, bar, breakfast…
The piano needs a lot of TLC. The action is stiff, making it difficult to play. Please think of doing it…
Perfectly situated facing the promenade and sea shore.
In need of refurbishment. You can hear noises from adjacent rooms, doors banging, plumbing whooshing, people moving about.
Lovely view from room. Helpful, friendly and engaging staff. Good car parking.
Could do with a bit of repair and redecoration in places.
Location and breakfast couldn't be bettered, Well done,
The bedroom, though spacious, obviously hadn't been redecorated for years. The carpet was all rucked up, like the waves on the seashore. With a bit of money you could do wonders.
Excellent position close to promenade and beach. Friendly and helpful staff.
The location and it’s good that it had a car park.
My room was like an oven. They provided no water in the room or biscuits. When I asked for a fan they said they had none as other guests were using them .. I felt when I arrived that the Man on Reception was condescending like he was doing me a huge favour by letting me stay there despite me paying what I think was over the odds for a boiling hot basic room with no breakfast included. I think couples were preferred to be honest. The soap dispenser on the wall was almost empty too. No plug points by the bed either .
Very clean, attentive staff and overall a great nights sleep.
It’s a lovely hotel in excellent location. But as with all hotels of this age it’s a bit tired. However it was nice and clean and comfortable.
Decent size room with comfortable beds, easily accessed from reception and nicely decorated. Absolute boon of floor-mounted fan in bedroom, although window wouldn't stay open. Lots of towel/clothes hanging in en suite. 4 grab-bars in bath/shower, making access safer. Beautiful restaurant/ballroom. Good breakfast, though some wait for top-ups to buffet. Staff friendly, efficient and helpful. NO DOGS ALLOWED IN RESTAURANT! Nice outdoor sitting/drinking areas looking to sea close by. Lots of parking on site. Fire doors closed gently, not with a bang. No creaky floors.
Bar drinks selection poor. With exception of beds, room furniture saw better days in last millenium. Bathroom also somewhat dated. Shabby external appearance.
Location was brilliant! Close to the town, restaurants and beach
No Expresso for breakfast!
Location to town and beach
The room was ok. Dinner was nice and the serving staff were pleasant and helpful. the position of the hotel was on the sea front so this was nice to wander there after dinner.
There were no bedside tables and the mattress was hard. I wanted to leave early the next day at 7.am. I waited in the reception until 7.30 am then spoke with the night porter who said that the morning staff were not available until 8.am. He said that he would pass my card onto the day staff for my invoice to be forwarded on.
Prrfect location on the promenade near beach. Hotel has a beautiful big garden and rooms for pets to stay. Enjoyed the breakfast
Great setting. By the beach, large grounds. The hotel has "signs of the past" - an old ballroom where 40+ years ago people would have danced. You could see many guests were "returners". Good parking and close to the marina Managed to take a photo in the same sport where my uncle Flannan posed 90 years ago, towel in hand from a swim
From a value for money perspective, it is hard to complain, but some investment to refresh the fabric would be welcome. Not sure it would work these days, but getting the ballroom back in action with some dances would be quite something
Great position and lovely helpful staff. Garden and balconies excellent.
From the outside it probably could do with a lick of paint but it’s a minor detail.
Beautiful building - just a little tired looking , lovely staff and perfect location
The Hotel is such a wonderful place to stay, it’s like coming home. It’s got such character, a wonderful ambiance. From Lucien, reception staff, restaurant, bar staff and housekeeping they all do whatever they can to make your stay a very happy one. I always look forward to returning. Highly recommended.
There is nothing that I didn’t like, I return on a regular basis.
Good location and reasonable charges for parking.
Really rundown Rusty grab rail in bath and cracks in bath Beds lumpy Window not secure When we made a complaint, it was not handled politely and there was no apology. I will be emailing the manager as I had a very unsatisfactory response on checkout. Having stayed here in a much nicer room on two other occasions this was such a poor experience, I would definitely not book again. I had face-to-face conversations with three members of staff who were alll very abrupt and rude.
