Nice rooms
Felt it was bit over priced at £300+ a night
Spacious room well supplied with facilities, including tea/coffee equipment Friendly, polite manageress Effective shower although shower tray slippery when wet
Absence of on-site parking Very small bathroom with no shelving Noise from private party taking place below us until midnight Narrow and windy staircase to first floor room Listed as a 'hotel' rarher than 'a pub with rooms'
Locatie. Mooie propere kamers. Vriendelijk personeel.
Geen lift. Douchekop niet verstelbaar.
Location, Facilities Staff Food
Room was too hot
Great location, very clean. Lovely finishing touches .
Bedroom was very warm despite the Dyson cooling fan. Very heavy duvet for summer and deep pillows.
Location
Rooms were small and could do with a more thorough clean
Sehr gutes Frühstück, top Lage. Parkplätze gegen Gebühr in der Nähe (2-3 Minuten zu Fuß)
Lovely pub and a beautiful room! Really helpful and lovely staff.
No air conditioning and 38 Celsius degrees outside, only way to sleep a little was using a wet towel as a duvet.
Breakfast Great location
Nothing
Good location and friendly staff
Uncomfortable bed. Doors to downstairs locked which I wasn’t made aware so felt quite odd and unsafe
Location, cleanliness, beds all great.
I am handicapped and stairs are difficult. Staff was very helpful but still awful stairs. Not something hotel can do anything about.
Liebevoll eingerichtetes Zimmer, tolle Lage, superfreundliches Personal!
The location and charm of this boutique Pub/hotel was worth the stay! The pub is located literally in the heart of historic Winchester, with easy walking everywhere. We enjoyed the breakfast included in the stay. The room was large and comfortable and quiet. The hotel staff were super helpful and pleasant.
There's no way to change this...but getting up to the room (and ours was conveniently on the 1st floor) would be literally impossible for anyone with mobility issues. The stairs are VERY narrow and steep, winding up with minimal handrails. To try and carry luggage for some of us older folks is hard. But the staff helped us, and we were thankful to be on the 1st floor.
Wonderful location
Charming. Well appointed and the staff were very nice
No aircon. On the hottest day of the year the room was stifling - they can’t control the weather but perhaps something could be done and ventilation was pathetic and the fan provided just not enough…
Bar was boutique, staff friendly, bed comfy.
Top room in property, 50 plus steps, tiny room, very hot, no ceiling fan as advertised, desk fan, had to have tiny windows open as to hot, outside area very noisy. Breakfast, eggs undercooked bread stale, we did not eat. Bathroom shower poor, sink didn’t sit correctly on wall, room dusty. Tap water not sealed bottled water.
Location is near the station
Difficult staircase as building very old, charged £250 for tiny room with no real hanging space for clothes, toilet did not flush properly, bathroom was very small and the grouting around he shower was filthy, small fan which was totally inadequate for the heat outside and blind and been left open room was really uncomfortable.
Comfortable bed, central location and near the railway station, friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere, the windows opened and the fan was effective thankfully. There was a decent size TV, the ability to make a hot drink was appreciated, nice toiletries in bathroom and general decor is pleasant. We didn't try the cooked breakfast but the coffee was good and the pastries outsized!
Although there was room in the bathroom strangely there was no shelf or cupboard for our toiletries which we had to keep in the bedroom. There was a hanging rail for clothes but the two box like shelf spaces had heavy cerematic decorative artefacts on which was a strange use of space. I had to move one so I could use the space from my toiletries. There was some noice of banging doors and as we overlooked the back year there was an early morning wake up of noise of glass bottles being recycled.
Friendly staff, clean, excellent location
Good expereicne, comfortable room and pleasant staff
Was in the heat wave and the absence of Air conditioning was difficult and would have thought included at this price.
Great staff, lovely old building, comfortable bed, great fan, (it was a very warm weekend), well stocked bar, very close to all the sights and the train station, will definitely return if we visit Winchester again.
Close to Railway Station and main attractions of Winchester, nearby bus stop for shuttle bus to St CAtherines Park and ride for Coach to Heathrow. The Breakfast was good but what we wanted to order was not available. No Bacon available, no PLAIN yogurt available - these are basic items needed for breakfast and we were more than disappointed
The location is on a busy traffic mini roundabout. Lots of huge lorries have to negotiate this. There is a terrible narrow winding uneven staircase in the hotel, I felt it dangerous especially with severe hip pain, Stairs get locked at night and access is through a side door. There is NO LIFT /elevator. In other words this "hotel" above a pub is unmanned overnight. There is NO phone in room, we have a US phone that does NOT work fully in UK. We were horrified. The Room was hot , NO AIR CONDITIONING available. they provided a miserable table fan. The bedding was a heavy quilt -- on hot stuffy night. It was awful. The shower was in a high bath tub, it was too difficult and dangerous to get in and out of safely.
The breakfast was great!
We did not realize our room did not have air-conditioning and it was very warm on the night that we checked in
Nothing
Cramped, tired, dirty. Poor condition. Poor decor. Horrible bed. Leaking shower. Hideously hot.
Staff were very helpful and worked extremely hard
Convenient to the town
The room was clean and comfortable. Nice decor The staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very nice The location is really good.
The room was unbearably hot and although a fan was provided, it didn't provide any breeze. The room was small and didn't have a view.
The breakfast was good and the bed was comfortable (but the pillows were like 20kg bags of cement left in the rain!) . It was in a good spot at the top of the high street. But it was also noisy with the windows open.
I arrived with four bags (my bad, I know, but there is no parking and I didn't want to leave valuables in a town centre multi-story car park - eighteen quid BTW)). I was put on the top floor (about 50 steps) and mentioned that I'd just had a hip operation. No offer of helping me with my bags despite two staff being downstairs with a near-empty pub. I got up to my room only to find that the door wouldn't open - 50 steps back down to be told "yeah, that happens a lot). Really???? Back up to discover a very hot room with a window that would only open maybe three inches, and then only stay open if (as I did) rammed a cup to keep it open. It was baking all night and I hardly slept. Also, contacting the pub was impossible - you just get put through to an options menu and the option to wait for a staff member just dials out. They don't seem to care one bit.
Great central location. Good atmosphere. Large room.
Breakfast was mediocre. The room although best suite in the house, it was noisy at night as near a busy road & people walking home etc. it was bank holiday and prices were hiked.
It had AC
Our window faced a very active street and was noisy at times
A inclinação do piso é intrigante. Chuveiro bastante apertado.
Tolle Pub Atmosphäre Sehr freundliches Personal Unkomplizierte Handhabung der Fahrradunterbringung
Great location and really friendly manager/evening staff. We ate in the pub and had a lovely dinner - great value and great quality.
Breakfast experience wasn’t great. No real explanation of how the cold buffet/breakfast worked - it wasn’t topped up and pastries a bit dry. Neither poached or fried eggs soft/running. Sounds a bit “nit picky” but it was such a contradiction from the great Saturday night experience. (Different people serving) It’s not the cheapest pub/hotel stay over, so breakfast just needs a little focus to be value for money.
Where it was
The steep narrow staircase you had to climb to get to your room. Not their fault but the room was roasting. and only one window opened about 6”. One small Dyson fan to blow the air around. The small bath panel was covered in mould. May as well rip the small Beth out and put in a walk in shower because you couldn’t lay in the bath. There were tea facilities available, but the room so hot I didn’t dare use the two bottles of milk that were in the room.
Very good breakfast with made to order options.
The breakfast was very generous and included, from comprehensive menu of cooked options, excellent Eggs Benedict.
Nothing! This is a really welcoming hotel with comfortable spaces.
The breakfast was OK, typical for English hotels
Room was super nice and a nice view of the West Gate. Lovely old pub downstairs. Delicious traditional breakfast. Perfect location for exploring Winchester
Stairs are quite steep and narrow stairs, no lift
Great central location. Stylish decor. Staff were super good. Lovely old pub. Excellent breakfast.
Room slightly on the small side but no big deal for a one nighter.
Jack was amazing, he was super helpful. Interesting historic building.
Nowhere in the room to put the extra cushions, cuddly toy, etc that we didn’t want in the bed. Although the location is great for the King Alfred’s Way, there isn’t anywhere safe to store bikes.
Beautiful pub in the centre of Winchester and lovely rooms
Our room was on the top floor and was just too hot we were provided with two fans but a very uncomfortable nights sleep
Exceptionally convenient location
Lack of a lift
Good location above the Main Street for all activities in town. Tasty breakfast. Nice bar and range of beers.
Light sleepers should beware of booking the second floor rooms as some traffic noise and stuffy (overly warm) conditions in summer months. First floor better bet.
Location, the cleanest and the pub itself was lovely , great people and definitely would stay again.
Found the pillows a bit hard but that's the only negative thing and that's just me
Lovely quiet and comfortable room with everything we needed. Lovely bed and linen and super breakfast of local produce and plenty of choices and friendly polite server. Next to historic buildings and easy stroll to shops and restaurants.
Lots of narrow steep stairs to room at top but especially lovely member of staff helped us.
Location
Bathroom was just about par, the shower was not. Very poor pressure.
Lovely location with great views from room 10. Lovely staff ,we were staying the night then travelling to Southampton for a cruise ,it was ideal as it's a six minute walk from.the station and only 20 mins to Southampton by train . The room was spotless as was the pub downstairs . We had breakfast here which was delicious. All in all a great place to stay in Winchester would definitely stay again.
If you have cases you have to carry them up quite a few stairs, not an issue for us though.
Beliggenhet
Trang og bratt trapp, veldig enkel frokost
Staff so friendly and helpful. Location perfect for exploring Winchester.
The room (#2) was super nice and with a very nice view of the West Gate
The accomodation was spotless and very comfortable.Perfect location for sighseeing.close to train station.
The stairs leading to our room was very steep. For angone with mobility problems a bit tricky.
Beautiful room. Very Comfy bed. Fantastic View of the area. Walking distancce to attractions, town and restaurants. However, food at The Westgate was fabulous (remember to book in advance!)
Close to the centre, good breakfast and staff
Perfect location, outrageously good food, lovely rooms!
Friendly v good staff lovely room good breakfast
Poor water pressure in shower - maybe because at top of pub? Also radio left on in my room and my friends’ room, then overnight I could hear low rumble of a radio from room below- unoccupied??? Kept me awake!! Stairs to rooms v steep
Location and lovely pub.
Steep Victorian stairs Very hot in upstairs rooms and restrictions on how much you can open windows due to height. However the staff ere very helpful in trying to sorry out our discomfort.
Second time visiting, lovely touches to the room including the radio. Always clean.
Perfect for what we needed. Lush room good staff
Nothing
The location of the hotel is really convenient, it's by a few attractions (e.g. downtown, the round table, etc.) and the staff were really nice. You're positioned right above a pub so getting food is easy. They have a back entrance for the tenants so not having to go through the pub when coming back to your stay was nice as well.
Our room was on the top floor and with luggage there wasn't really a good way to get there aside from carrying it all the way up. The staff helped us carry the luggage up but it would've been nice if there was an elevator or something similar.
Lovely comfortable and clean room. The hotel doesn't have AC and I stayed during the hot weather in May but a fan was in the room when I arrived and I slept really well. Easy parking at tower street and a lovely breakfast - plenty of choice, sadly it was a bit warm for a cooked breakfast but they looked amazing. Friendly and considerate staff - I arrived later than anticipated due to traffic.
The new refurbishment is great - the rooms are fresh and cosy. Nice touch to have treats for our dog. The bar area is smart and the pub is in great shape. Very well located and will definitely return.
We should have gone to breakfast earlier as most of the ‘breakfast table’ had gone.
The location, staff and food were superb..
The staircase was too narrowed..
Beautifully decorated room.
Location Excellent breakfast!! Staff very friendly and helpful
Staircase very challenging going up to top floor.
Beautifully decorated, very clean & location was perfect. Staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble.
The room was a bit snug.
This room was above a pub which we thought may be noisy , but it was not at all. The parking was a bit of a pain but being so close to the centre of Winchester was worth having park a little away. Breakfast was great
The noise from the other rooms was a bit loud but would not stop us staying here again
Location is excellent, quite near the railway station and just where the town centre proper begins, so very near to major tourist attractions, shops, and facilities. Great view of the Westgate from the window, but although so close to the town centre it was very quiet and peaceful. Rooms were extremely spacious, almost a suite, and comfortable. Nice breakfast which was part of the package.
The stairs are quite steep, no lift, so quite a long climb to the upper floors-it's the price you pay for the view. It didn't bother us unduly, but it would not be for anyone with limited mobility. But this is well known I think, as people we talked to who'd met guests who stayed there remarked on it.
Good breakfast. Room was clean. Location was good for walking into the city center. Not for elderly or someone with a bad leg, but if you dont mind the stairs and dont have much luggage, it's fine. Also close to train station although we were driving.
We were on 5th floor, which was a bit of a climb with luggage. Parking was a ways away in city garage. Awkward to unload luggage near the hotel.
Excellent location. Such a cosy environment. Lovely food & great atmosphere.
Room a bit on the small side, & shower needed upgrading.
Clean rooms and nice decor. Friendly staff
Breakfast wasn’t the best. Staircases very tight fr carrying things up
Breakfast was a good selection (buffet and/or ordered from the menu). Location is convenient to the Cathedral (5 min walk). Parking was available right outside, but if needed a lot was < 5 minute walk away. Lots of good restaurants just down the hill. Can certainly recommend Bottega del Mastro on Parchment St. Food was excellent!!!
Tough to move luggage up the stairs and through the narrow hallways but that is how it is for an old building in England. No lift. Would be very difficult for anyone who struggles with stairs. The stairs also lean a little (quaint, but you have to be mindful). Some of the bedroom doors have up to an inch gap in the bottom of them. Floors creak, so you will hear your neighbors. Just different, but not necessarily bad.
It location close to a venue we wanted to visit.
Not much the room was not very large but for one night perfect.
Camera pulita e ben servita. Oltre le nostre aspettative!
Great location and a friendly staff
Our room, #5, was a sauna. Even with the window open and the fan on, that room never cooled down and there was no AC. The bed needed a sheet under the comforter to allow the comforter to be removed when it's that hot. But otherwise, no other concerns
Music from the bar was very loud until very late.
Older building with modernised rooms. Good sized room with smaller bathroom. Character rooms. Hallways are suffering a little but that is not where you stay 😊Breakfast was good with a nice selection of hot & cold options including tea, coffee. The staff at breakfast were great! Location is excellent right next to the historic High St, The Great Hall and Westgate. 6 minute walk from train station with bag in tow. Rooms are above the Bar & Restaurant. Had dinner once & it was excellent. Small outside patio.
If I'm picky. Rooms are very warm. There is a small air con/heater in the room though. The hallways were very smelly but I think they may have had a leak. No lift & skinny stairways but still manageable to get the suitcase up. The room was a bit dusty.
Fabulous location. Held our bags early so we could go on a tour. Delicious breakfast made to order.
Stairs were narrow and difficult. No A/C and there was no place to put toiletries.
Great location Comfy bed Nice little touches Clean Helpful staff Lovely breakfast
