Useful location near the Scrabster ferry and the Thurso train station, but that’s all that’s going for it.

I arrived just after midnight due to train problems and the host made it clear that he was not impressed, although I’d given him many hours’ notice that this would happen. When I got into my room, the bed was BROKEN and at an angle. It was like sleeping on a cliff edge! The room was street level and noise came straight in from outside and from the room next door. I got hardly any sleep. The kitchen was FILTHY. Breakfast was DIY cereal and milk.

Actual room was comfortable and clean, but kitchen just felt a bit ‘sticky’ as though it needed a bit of a spruce up.

La camera non era insonorizzata ed era posizionata vicino ad una porta del corridoio che non era ammortizzata quindi si sentiva sbattere ad ogni ora

We had an excellent stay at Sandra’s Backpackers. We were a group of 10 people from Wales, staying together, and overall we had a very good experience. The hotel is a bit old, but it has been maintained to a decent standard and was comfortable for our stay. The breakfast is simple and limited, with cereals, bread, tea, coffee and a few other basic options, but it was enough to start the day. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to stay at Sandra’s Backpackers again. It was a good experience for our group, and we would recommend it to others looking for a simple and affordable place to stay.

La struttura si trova in posizione centrale rispetto alle spiagge e al centro di Thurso. La camera era piccola ma con più o meno tutte le funzionalità.

Our stay wasn't nearly as horrible as some of the other reviews suggest. Yes, the building is worn and the rooms are basic, but they were very clean, including the bathroom. The staff was very nice and there was ample food provided for breakfast included in the price. Kitchen is large and well equipped, and the dining room is lovely, decorated with souvenirs from travels. There was free parking on the street and you could walk to everything in the town.

There was a lot of text signs on the walls (warnings, rules and so on) of the room, which made us feel slightly uncomfortable.

We had a wonderful stay! The accommodation was very clean, tidy and comfortable, with everything we needed for our NC500 road trip as a family of two adults and a 3-year-old. We especially loved the shared kitchen, which was fully equipped for preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner, with cereals, jams, marmalade, butter and more provided for breakfast. The hosts were absolutely amazing and so welcoming, giving us great recommendations on where to go and what to do. There was also plenty of convenient parking nearby. Overall, a fantastic stay that we would highly recommend!

Keuken onhygiënisch, douche koud, bed matig en klein, tv deed het niet , zeer basic Zeer gehorig, handdoeken sleets met gaten.

Das Zimmer war sehr klein. Das Frühstück konnte man in einer Küche zu sich nehmen wo man alles selber machen muss, selbst das Geschirr musste man selber abwaschen (mit kaltem Wasser). Die Spüle sah nicht gerade sauber aus und beim Frühstück dauchten auf einmal zwei lange Haare auf.

Struttura nel complesso funzionale, nonostante sia un po da rinnovare. Camera tutto sommato pulita e cucina attrezzatissima con ampia scelta per la colazione.

Struttura un pò datata. Utensili e elettrodomestici in cucina sarebbero da sostituire in quanto molto vissuti.

Die Küche u auch der Kühlschrank war voll mit Cerealien u anderen Sachen, die man für ein Frühstück braucht. Super!

Did expect much after reading reviews so was pleasantly surprised. Bathroom was clean, could still smell the bleach from cleaning. Beds were clean and fresh with towels laid out. Beds were very comfortable too..

Booked a twin room but was given a bunk bed which was hard to access.

Good location, free parking on street overnight (6pm to 8am), room had ensuite, tv, wifi and fridge, hostel part had plenty of seating and was well equipped with toastie maker, toasters, microwaves, ovens, tv and coffee machines. Free breakfast of cereals, yoghurts, bread and cheese/jams.

It's definitely functional but tired and in need of investment. Some cupboard doors and doors etc need replaced/repair. Lots of other simple repairs that should be done with fixtures and fittings, removing old signage etc.

Es war ein kleines, dunkles, schmuddeliges Räumchen, speckig wirkendes Bettzeug, das ich nicht benutzt habe. Der TV oberhalb der Garderobe, deshalb weit weg. Ein völlig unnötiger Kühlschrank, der neben dem Bett auf ein Regal gestellt war und den schon kleinen Raum noch zustellte. Dieser brummte direkt neben dem Ohr in der Nacht. Fenster mit Milchglas und dreckiger Bandjalousie, die man nicht anfassen wollte. Ein großer, auch dunkler Aufenthaltsraum, der aber auch schmuddelig wirkte, so dass ich die Gabel erst mal heiß abwusch. Bad war vor ein paar Jahren mal renoviert worden, das war noch mittelmäßig in Ordnung. Der Wirt war zwar freundlich wirkte ungepflegt. Mein Fazit ist, dass dieser Raum nicht als Unterkunft angeboten werden darf.

...its was very central, and apart from street noises, it was nicely quiet. The kitchen/eating room is big and comfortable, fun deco, and lots of info material available about the town and ongoing journey - very cozy backpacker atmosphere! The family, running the place, were outstanding friendly - I felt very welcome!

The (two-bed) room was a bit crammed, and not everything in there was needed (an unusable fridge). On arrival there was a strong odour of bleach in the room & attached bathroom... after some proper airing (big window) it was fine though.

我们的房间在顶层，窗子我试了一下，不能很严实地关紧，因此会有一点点寒冷的气息透进来，不知道是不是我自己未得要领的缘故。电冰箱启动时，略有点吵，不过相信我，顶层是我们得到了很好的优待，满满的诚意。夜晚街上会有车，用改装的引擎驾驶，我相信整个街区都能听到。

Location, comfortable, value for money and dog friendly.

The door closers, the night we stayed a few people in and out and door closers banging. Woke us up and started our dogs barking. Just some people inconsiderate of noise but the door closers could be less.

Het ontbijt was goed. We konden de hele keuken gebruiken die van alles voorzien was met zelfs een airfryer. De eigenaren waren erg aardig en behulpzaam. Het gratis parkeren was dichtbij (achter de kerk, 2 minuten lopen). Chinees, Indiaas restaurant en fish en chips waren vlakbij. Van hieruit konden we makkelijk naar John o’Groats, Duncansby Stacks, Sinclair Girnigoe Castle en Whaligoe steps. Allemaal ongeveer een half uur rijden.

Het duurde even voordat je de juiste temperatuur had van je douche water.

Very welcoming and friendly . Very happy to accommodate changes in plan. Good kitchen and dining room. Rooms are basic as you would expect for the price but comfortable enough. It is very good value with a good self service breakfast of cereals and toast.

Staff very friendly when picking up keys and showing us around the hostel. Room was good - just what we needed for a single evening before heading onto Scrabster for the boat to Orkney the next Morning.

La chambre n’était pas très propre, un pansement usagé était présent sur la table de nuit. La chambre que j’ai occupé semble avoir été équipée de matériels de récupération. L’eau de la douche et du lavabo passait soudainement du chaud au froid et inversement. Les aliments en libre service pour le petit déjeuner était stockés dans le réfrigérateur dans des conditions d’hygiène douteuses.

Good location and cost. Stayed here before catching the early ferry to Orkney. Breakfast options were a nice bonus! Everyone was friendly.

It was quite loud throughout the night. The green exit light in the room made it difficult to sleep if you need a dark room.

We stayed only for one night as we had to catch an early ferry from Scrabster the next day. Arrived at 10pm in a delayed bus from Inverness, the staff was super easy to reach at that time and had no issues to check in. We loved the communal kitchen, it's fully equiped and very easy to prepare an early breakfast. Facilities were basic but functional and clean. Would come back if need to catch an early ferry the next day.

I had a wonderful stay at this Hostel and would happily recommend it. The location is excellent and very convenient, with all the main attractions within easy walking distance. There is also parking available along the street, which was a great advantage. The hotel has all the facilities you need for a comfortable stay, and everything was clean, well maintained and well organised. What really made my stay special was the owner. He is exceptionally kind, helpful and knowledgeable, and is always happy to provide useful information and recommendations about the city and the surrounding area. His advice was invaluable and made my visit even more enjoyable. Thank you very much for your warm hospitality. I would be delighted to stay here again.

Excellent breakfast fixings. Kitchen had every appliance you could ever need. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

The room was VERY permeable to noise. The beds were also not the most comfortable.

Staying at Sandras Backpackers was an absolute delight. Let me mention everything one by one. First thing it is very close to Railway Station. Just 10 mins walking. Just straight down the street. It is right on main road, so you will not miss it. Very close to the central street and the main church. Best it's strategic location. Second, James a nice guy he will give you ideas about where you can go have food or for any other information. He is always there and happy to help. Above all there kitchen is generously filled with stuffs for breakfast and help yourself. I got lucky during my stay. My 6 dormitory was empty and I enjoyed complete privacy even when I was in hostel. My room was having private bathroom so it was really helpful for ne. I liked the kitchen most though. Because of its warmth and cosines. It was amazing. During my stay I met James' Mom & Dad. There presence made my stay more like a home. I love to come back to Thurso again and obviously I know where to stay.

Frühstüch in Selbstbedienung war ok, mehr aber auch niicht

extrem unfreundlicher Empfang. Es gibt keinen Parkplatz, Das Zimmer wirkte mehr wie ein Stundenhotel. Badezimmerheizung und -licht waren defekt. Die Dusche war nicht sauber, es wurde das ganze Bad beim Duschen geflutet. Es hingen überall Verbotsschilder. Das Fenster war zur Straße raus, auf der nachts mehrmals grölende Passanten waren. Lage war nur zu Discos gut. Wir haben sehr viel besser für weniger Geld in schottischen Städten übernachtet.

Pretty close to the harbour, flexible checkin, free parking until 09:00, central, breakfast was okay, bathroom clean, shower great.

We had a lot of big black flies in our room, we couldn't open the windows so the room was very stuffy and the bed sheet was ripped in one corner.

Sandra's is what it says it is: a hostel, NOT a hotel. But it has en suite rooms, and double beds. The father and son managers care for and about their guests. The kitchen is well equipped and stocked.

It was just what we needed

Geen enkele handdoek, ook niet na personeel aangesproken te hebben (zat wel in de prijs). Nergens een voetmat om het gebouw of de kamer te betreden. De vloer bevat spleten waar het vuil in blijft plakken. De koelkast staat op je nachtkastje en is storend als je wil slapen. Raam onbereikbaar, de zithoek in de kamer bestond uit een oude bureaustoel waar eigenlijk geen plaats voor was. Meubeltjes zijn schraapsels, ondanks matras wel zacht. Oordoppen zijn sterk aan te raden.

For the money paid Nothing. Location is ideal for catching the Orkney ferry. James is most helpful.

Room had a fridge and very good shower. The kitchen was basic but adequate. As the breakfast was limited we didn't have it and found a local cafe with a cooked breakfast.

The noise level from other guests was quite loud and began at , what to our party, was early in the morning. From about 6.15 a.m. toilets flushing and doors slamming and general movement noise was constant .I appreciate that a lot of the guests were wanting early starts to get on with their various activities but perhaps a bit better sound proofing or an notification in rooms to try and be reasonably quiet might help.

I felt vulnerable and slept with a chair against the door

Arrived late. Thurso was a restless and scary little town at least that night. Drinking, fast cars, people yelling and arguing in the streets. Sandras had only mixed rooms, and i saw 3 men’s luggage when arrived. There was nobody there. I couldnt relax and stay there to wait these 3 strange guys arriving from town because I wanted to sleep. Kitchen was unclean and fridge full of almost empty jars of jam and nutella. No dates in cereal. The staff didnt care if someone left dirty pans with sauces to smell there all night. Some of them were friendly, though.

Central for Thurso. Basic breakfast supplies were good.

Kitchen & crockery/cutlery were dirty - superficially tables & benches were clean, but as we and others found, you needed to wash & dry everything you used BEFORE using it. Room was tired, and repairs to minor breakages & wear hadn’t been made. Took hours to get threadbare towels supplied. Office was unused & no signage how to find manager (eventually found him in run-down shack at back). Whole building was smelly and needs a significant deep clean & renovation (or demolition). I get that James has a disabled child to look after, and his parents are getting too old to be cleaners, but Sandra’s is not up to any reasonable health & safety standards and should be taken off the market in its current state. Does anyone from Council or Govt check publicly-listed accomodation? By a long shot the worst we’ve stayed in over 8 weeks in Europe.
