Coimbra's historic old town and university were the main reasons for visiting. With its character and prominent location, Alto Canto is perfect on both counts. A hearty breakfast set me for the day as did the helpful recommendations that guided me to places I would not have otherwise gone to. Great communication throughout a bonus.

For the environmentally conscious traveller, some recycling bins on site are appreciated as they are hard to find in town. The mini bar in the room will be an excellent way of promoting Portugal's wonderful food and drink. Thank you.

An exceptional place in every way! The room was spacious, bright and spotlessly clean, with high ceilings and large windows, as was the very comfortable bathroom. The bed and pillows felt like 5-star hotel, high quality and extremely comfortable. Our host, Anna, was absolutely wonderful, warm, welcoming and always ready to help with anything we needed. The breakfast was also excellent. The location could not be better: just a one-minute walk from the University and only a minute away from one of the most beautiful parts of Coimbra’s historic centre. A truly special place and, for us, the best accommodation in every respect. We would definitely stay here again!

La atención excelente. Ana muy atenta los días previos, y Joana durante el desayuno y la salida, marcó la diferencia. Joana nos hizo sentir como en nuestra propia casa. El edificio tenía mucho encanto, muy limpio y cómodo. El desayuno excelente, de buena calidad y muy completo. También nos encantó que estaba muy céntrico y nos permitió disfrutar mucho de Coimbra.

Es war wirklich außergewöhnlich. Wir werden uns für immer an diesen Aufenthalt erinnern. Die Ankunft in der Unterkunft raubte uns den Atem🤗. Die Räumlichkeiten, die Ausstattung, die Unterstützung und Restauranttips der Gastgeberin, das liebevoll bereitete Frühstück, das keine Wünsche offen ließ… wir können uns nur bedanken für diesen wunderbaren Aufenthalt, den wir nie vergessen werden. Es war sehr nah an der Universität . Es gab ein gutes Frühstück und der Ausblick war auch sehr schön.

Da es ein Altbau ist, hat es etwas nach alten Teppich gerochen. Es gibt auch noch ein paar Dinge zu reparieren.

The location was amazing - right by the University and the two restaurants we had selected were 5 minutes walk. The view is incredible and the building itself is so unique - first place we have stayed with a ballroom !

Wir hatten leider nur 1 Nacht in dieser bezaubernden Unterkunft in bester Lage. Hier werden traditionelle Dinge mit modernem Design kombiniert und man fühlt sich sehr wohl. Tolle Räumlichkeiten mit einer Terrasse, die einen wunderschönen Blick über Fluss und Stadt bietet. Zudem hatten wir ein echt schönes Frühstück liebevoll angerichtet bekommen. Herzliche Gastgeber und beste Kommunikation. Wir würden wieder kommen!

Great location to university visit. Excellent host and breakfast. Rooms and beds are comfy. Terrace views are beautiful. The experience is one of a kind.

Scent/smell of certain rooms can be improved - probably through use of organic scents or plants (e.g lavender). Kids did catch a cockroach in their room, so house cleanness can also be improved.

O edifício é histórico e a.vista deslumbrante. O café da manhã é muito bom. São dois quartos e como ocupamos os dois, todo o local com sala de estar e terraço ficou reservado.

The place was comfortable, the room majestic and the views amazing. Ana is a kind and caring host who provided a lovely breakfast. The location is close to the university sites.

Beautifully decorated with tiles and lamps of all kinds, a perfect look out to the river and the view of Coimbra~ close to the University, which was our purpose for the one night visit on the way down to Lisbon. Ana the owner is very sweet and communicated clearly and timely.

It’s on the upper part of the town, which means you have some climbing to do~ not too bad. The taxi from the train station dropped us off right in front of the house and going back to the station was as easy.

Enjoyed staying in this beautiful historic building converted into lodging and occasional entertainment venue. It has stunning views over the Montego river. Bedrooms are large, and bathroom is modern. Ana was a lovely host, and served breakfast in an atmospheric kitchen. Breakfast had fresh bread, fruit, baked goods, cheese, meats, juice, yogurt.

Rooms are large but rather sparesely furnished. A little more storage space to make the room more guest-friendly, would be appreciated. Also, since this is not a hotel, but a serviced apartment, there seems to be little accountability to solve problems. The shampoo dispenser in our shower had come off the wall, but when we reported it to the host, there was no urgency to fix it. Maybe we need to modify our expectations accordingly, so we are not disappointed.

Großzügig geschnittenes Zimmer mit großem Bad in einem historischen, liebevoll restauriertem Gebäude. Das gesamte Erdgeschoss incl großer Terrasse mit tollem Ausblick zum Fluss konnte mit genutzt werden. Ana war sehr warmherzig und hilfsbereit und hat ein leckeres Frühstück in der Küche serviert. Alle Sehenswürdigkeiten, insbesondere die Universität, waren fußläufig schnell zu erreichen.

We loved staying in an historic building with so much character. The location was excellent as we wanted to explore the University buildings which were literally around the corner. We enjoyed spending time in the beautifully tiled sitting rooms and on the spacious terrace with far reaching views across the river. It was so quiet at night that excellent sleep was guaranteed.

Es ist ein einzigartiges Zimmer in einer wunderschön hergerichteten Wohnung einer Dachterrasse. Ana hat uns sehr herzlich begrüßt und uns morgens ein leckeres Frühstück mit Pastei de nata, Orangensaft und frischem Obst gezaubert. Auch die Lage direkt in der Nähe der Universität war super.

Dass wir nur eine Nacht bleiben konnten.

AltoCanto was such a pleasant suprise. I booked last minute with not too many expectations and was blown away by the excellent service that Ana provided and the comfort of the room. It is a charming place with lots of history, at a prime location, and one of the most legitimate Portuguese experiences I ever had, including the lovely breakfast Ana prepares in a proper Portuguese kitchen. The place is full of character and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Coimbra for business and leisure.

The bath room was quite small - done expect a wellness oasis The house is quirky and comes with all the benefits and challenges of such an old house. You either love the history (then you will have a very special time there) or you don’t (then probably it’s a bit challenging)

We were really amazed and delighted with the room we rented from Alto Canto while we were in Coimbra for a couple nights. The location was perfect, and the room was large and impressive. This was especially appreciated after several weeks of staying in small hotel rooms during our travel. The veiw from the balcony was stunning.

The only thing we wished for was a comfortable place to sit. Of course we could have gone down to the shared space where there were some nice places to relax, but it would have been nice to have more options in our room. The one couch that was in our room broke when we sat down.

Our location was perfect and the room was very comfortable. Breakfast was a nice touch, as well!

Ana was very responsive and allowed us to leave our bags while we explored Coimbra. Our room was ready early, allowing us to rest. She gave us excellent advice about restaurants and cafes. And the breakfast was great!

There was a dance party or beer festival Friday night that was loud. But they had no control over that:

The space was lovely but felt a bit "bare." The common room and patio are great spaces with minimal furnishings.

The upper floor unit in Alto Canto is remarkable. It consists of a bedroom, bathroom AND BALLROOM! The ballroom has several windows and a large balcony overlooking the river. Its quite incredible.

The lights in the room are too harsh. That needs to be a soft light as well as well as a comfortable chair.

Alto Canto was a nice surprise on our trip to Portugal. Ana and Joanna made sure to stay in touch with us for arriving safely at Alto Canto. Driving down the cobble stone street and (easily) finding a parking spot near the house was a comfortable start into the locality of Coimbra. Stepping into the house, we became guests of the historic Coimbra - if you feel like spending a very few Euros more, go for the Superior King Room on the second floor. While I was looking for the lock on our room, my wife realized that we had rented the entire space with staircase, bedroom, large sitting room and two balconies overlooking the Mondego river :) Breakfast was served in the (historic) kitchen room and you can enjoy the last cup of coffee sitting outside on the large terrace overlooking the lower parts of the city. While we very much enjoyed our entire stay at Alto Canto, you do realize the challenges of keeping up with a larger historic building. Nonetheless, the entire place, including bedrooms and bathrooms, were kept very clean. Alto Canto is located "below the university", just steps away from the city center. Thanks a lot to Ana and Joanna for a great stay in Coimbra - and we happily recommend Alto Canto to fellow travellers coming to Coimbra!

The building is authentic and in the very middle of the University of Coimbra's neighborhood. Located only a 5-minute walk from the city centre, the overall organisation of the structure is good. The host is available and easily reachable for any kind of requests.

Information at the arrival (e. g. breakfast organisation, amenities in the room, possibility of changing towels) can be improved. We had high expectations on the breakfast, which was a bit limited in terms of quality and quantity, with products from the supermarket.

כמו לגור בארמון מפואר של פעם, עם נוף עוצר נשימה מהחלונות, חדרים סופר מפוארים וענקיים. הכל נוצץ ונקי וארוחת הבוקר נהדרת.

המקום קצת מוזר אבל זו חוויה. קחו בחשבון שמדובר בבית ענק (כמו ארמון) שיש בו רק שני חדרים. זה לא מלון. אנחנו היינו משפחה של 4 אז למעשה היינו לבדנו לגמרי בכל המבנה הענק (שכולל אינספור חדרים מעוצבים בפאר כמו ארמונות של פעם) זו חוויה מיוחדת אבל הבדידות לא מתאימה לכל אחד

La ubicación y vistas eran excelentes. El complejo es un palacete muy pintoresco, con habitaciones enormes y una vista genial. La cama muy comoda. Un espacio unico. Fácil acceso y proceso de check in lo cual es un plus! Personal muy amable.

El baño era un poco pequeño en comparación a la habitación y el espacio se sentía como que le faltaban muebles de lo grande que era habitación pero en realidad tenía todo lo necesario. El desayuno estaba rico pero me hubiera gustado algo caliente tipo huevos, pero estuvo bien.

・傾斜の強い上り坂にある。我々はリスボンからの一泊旅で身軽だったが、スーツケースを引きながらこの宿に向かうのはかなり大変と思う。体力のない方はタクシー利用が望ましい。 ・必ずしも宿の問題ではないが、近所でパーティーがあったらしく、午前3時過ぎまで外が騒がしく殆ど眠れなかった。 ・エアコンがない施設であることから、夏の暑さが未知数（大きな扇風機の設置はあるが）。 ・ゴミ箱がトイレのサニタリーボックスしかないため、べッド周りにあると便利と思った。 ・坂道を往復したくない方は、予め夕食を取ってからチェックインされた方が良いのかも。

Lo mejor de Alto Canto es la ubicación, el personal y la magia que todo el alojamiento tiene. Las vistas desde la terraza son espectaculares. Desde antes de llegar Ana la anfitriona está pendiente de todo aquello que puedas necesitar. Paredes con historia: Portugal en su esencia más pura. El desayuno maravilloso en una cocina que te transporta a otra época. Camas muy confortables. Y la atención de Ana maravillosa.

Absolutely beautiful panoramic view of river and city. Apt located in University area making walking tour very easy and close by. Wonderful bar and restaurants within 10 minute walk from apt. Hosts were extremely helpful with info and suggestions.

Everything was divine - we felt like bohemian royalty w/ the kindness and privacy that we so cherish. Ana was a consumate host - beyond helpful, and treated like guests whom she may have already know. Coimbra is a gem and Alto Canto is also an exceptional gem. The building is old - which we loved - so if there is any issue w/ a fussy toilet etc., just tell the staff.

The place is in an old building that is refurbished. The room was so nice, very clean, spacious, and quiet. The location was also perfect as it was a few blocks from the coimbra university and from the main places to visit. Ana, the host, was great! very nice and on top of all of the details!!

Stunningly beautiful bedroom and huge living room looking over the river. Part of a lovely old home. Breakfast was lovely and Ana extremely helpful with everything. We loved the Faro performance just down the road which Ana suggested we might like to attend.

After reading recent reviews of Alto Canto, we were expecting a more substantial breakfast.

There is not a single thing I don’t like about this amazing place. Ana is the best host that you may dream of having. Wonderful breakfasts, in love with the coffee. Super clean place, full of beautiful details. I stay in the second floor, to my surprise, like a space from a palace, only for me. Very comfy bed. Excellent location to explore the city.

The property itself was beautiful, like staying in a grand old apartment! Paid parking was easy to find right in front of the building. Loved the outdoor terrasse overlooking the river particularly as there was shade on a very hot day. Room was large and nice bathroom products. Location is very convenient and the breakfast was much appreciated and tasty.

Not sure if a regular occurrence but there was loud music with very strong bass nearby until the early hours of the morning, which meant we couldn't open windows for a breeze. A fan was provided but it was extremely hot and humid in the room making it hard to sleep between that and the noise. A top sheet on the bed would have been helpful too instead of just the duvet.

Personal attention by Ana during our stay was special. Wonderful view of river, close to the UNESCO university buildings and excellent breakfast.Exce

Parking is really bad!! It is a very busy area because of the college. The directions to get to our room and use the keypad were not clear. Maybe put a name or number on the bedroom doors. We had to message the owner and she answered right away. Breakfast was nice and nice to chat with Joanna using google translate.

Superb location close to the university, with great views over the city, the river and the hills beyond. The guest house occupies two floors of fine town house, the rooms lined half way with traditional Portuguese tiles. As well as a spacious bedroom and modern bathroom, there is access to two fine sitting rooms and an outside terrace. Delicious breakfast with warm rolls, home made jams, lots of exotic fruit along with yogurt and irresistible pastel de Nata (custard tarts). Ana our host was very friendly and helpful, booking taxis for us each morning and always ready to offer advice. A perfect place for which to visit Coimbra - wonderful tapas bars in easy reach.

Entry required three codes - concentration required Coimbra has steep hills so one must be prepared for that !

AltoCanto is a lovely apartment in the heart of Coimbra. Great location, terrific views of the River and Ani was a helpful and kind host. Breakfast was very nice as well. This is set up for independent travelers who are comfortable using codes, etc to access the unit. We loved it but if you are looking for a hotel this isn’t that.

Suggestion for winter: A space heater in the large bedroom upstairs took the edge off the cold. But walking through the large open area to the bathroom was uncomfortable at night and first thing in the morning. A bathroom heater would be welcome.

Ana and Joanna were stellar hosts. They provided a clean and charming apartment with a beautiful view, a warm welcoming breakfast personally prepared, and a personal send off. The location was perfect for our stay; a short walk to three things we planned: the riverside for a night stroll, the university for sightseeing, and the botanical gardens to relax in nature.

Parking in the narrow street was a challenge but very inexpensive at the meter. If you drive, I highly recommend a compact car for anywhere in Portugal.

This is the best view in Coimbra. There are two rooms, on two levels of the building both with amazing views. They share a huge common area and balcony, and the breakfast is served in a separate kitchen. The building itself is full of history and is located just some stairs away from the University of Coimbra. Ana is warm and welcoming host, ready to go far and beyond to provide a comfortable stay and experiences in town.
