The Westgate

Very pleasent simple but good breakfast. Parking a bit cramped

The pub that I stayed in for the night, was very cozy. the bedroom was clean and the bed was comfortable. Central to the center of town 2 min walk, the staff at the westgate pub were friendly and they cooked a very nice breakfast in the morning. the westgate is perfect for a one night stop over.

Pub is quite run down. Didn't fancy the food Room was clean but really basic. Telly was a tiny thing and was broken. Shower head was leaking. One of the single beds was shortened to fit the room.

Room was small , bed high but comfortable , tv was quite good plenty of channels , plenty of tea / coffee available , toilet and shower area ok , on the bad side i paid for a breakfast to be told i had to get up for 7.30 to have it due to traders / workers needing a early start ! , i declined getting up for that reason , quite a noisy pub lots of door slamming from 6.30 am onwards , and something was running like a extraction fan all night outside my window until the early hours of the morning , but i slept reasonably well . Did,nt see much of the host , but i went to the b/festival most of the day and returned after the pub had shut did,nt see anyone when i left at 9.50 am , left the key on the table by the hallway door , for b.s Edmunds its cheaper than most b&b,s but compared to the one i stayed in the night before , for £13 more and a room 3 times the size a double bed and breakfast in bed and more upto date , greene king you need to improve your game .

Chinese around the corner

The room was dirty. Draws filled with rubbish from previous stayer. The bed was used that much you couldn't sleep without rolling into the middle again almost a v shape! Sheets smelt foisty. Breakfast was at 830!? That's it. So when you are working, which I was, this was a struggle. First day extractor fan wasn't working so had a knock on the door, "sorry the extractor fans not working so no breakfast, here's a 10er for something". The landlord was pleasant enough however they just shouldn't have a b and b above as there is clearly no knowledge of how a room should be kept or presented. The actual positioning is great and it cost 170 for 2 nights, which I understand is fairly cheap, however cleanliness is a must and a bit of air freshener or something would've helped too. Oh, and a clean bed. All in all id pass on this one, I stopped in the bushel the week before and there was no comparison. And pretty much the same cost! Book the bushel for being central and swerve this one!!! Unless you want the Fawlty towers experience 👍

The room was ok for one night. Staff nice. Also good location. Breakfast time was late (8.30 am) for a normal working day so not very convenient for people travelling for work/business.

A good one night stay in Bury. The pub was excellently location in the centre with free parking.

Easy to check in, parking, and a great breakfast. within walking distance to shops

The room was fine unfortunately it overlooked the pub courtyard where people were singing and shouting til approx 1230am. Also an external fan which was situated near the room was running all night. Due to it being a very hot night we needed the windows open. Resulting in very little sleep.

It is what it is, cheap and cheerful accommodation. Room could have been cleaned to a better standard. You might need a set of earplugs was a constant banging of doors until midnight and a fan of some sorts running outside the room. Single room is very small and bed was lumpy and I felt like I had to climb into the bed. En-suite facilities were ok but shower cubicle and head were not clean. Breakfast was cooked fresh and was ok. For the price, you can’t go wrong but with a little bit of general cleanliness and tidy up it could be a fantastic place to stay.

This is a basically C19th Inn, although some of it might be older. The room was clean and bright, the en-suite shower the same. Tea/coffee and kettle &c provided in the room. Bed fairly comfortable. Two things that were not so good: there was no hot water from the hand basin tap - no water at all in fact - and this could not be rectified until after the weekend (I booked in Saturday afternoon). All Ok in the shower. I could not open either the bedroom window nor the bathroom one, both sash windows painted and stuck. Secondary double glazing over both did not help, and the space between that and the window panes could do with the network of cobwebs being cleared out. Sunday morning breakfast was a problem for the place, as the breakfast maid had not appeared. Mine Host therefore cooked the full English himself - which was very good and well done. Nothing apart from that such as cereal or bread/toast was on offer. I saw only the innkeeper - who may be running the place more or less single-handed - but he was friendly and helpful. The place is well sited as it is only a short walk to the Abbey/Cathedral area, or the Market Place and new shopping centre. It is quiet and in one of the many attractive old streets of the town. Bearing in mind what the place is and what it is not, I was generally satisfied with my stay and would go there again.

You’re staying upstairs of a pub. This helps give a feel for being a local. Welcoming proprietor. There were shrimp shells left in the sink. I’m sure just missed. And the pub tended to be noisy until maybe 11. I appreciated how convenient it was to town. Parking was technical, but super convenient.

Stayed one night. Clean and comfortable. Landlord and manager very attentive and welcoming. Excellent traditional english breakfast. The pub itself is a proper drinkers pub so expect lively clientele in the bar. Would stay again.

I only need one night stay.Very friendly room was a little small but was ok.Was very warm and i couldn't open the window.very basic but clean

The Westgate was easy to find and there was parking around the back of the pub as the town seems to have limited parking. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. The location is a 5 minute walk to the shops .

nice accommodation for the price no thrills expected pub and staff all good

Clean and comfortable. Convnient for a night out in Bury.

I stayed at this property for a total of 16 nights over a 4 week period. Warmly greeted each time. Key given shown up to my toom the first two weeks. Breakfast order taken. They were able to accommodate an early breakfast time to suit my work schedule. There were a couple of maintenance issues during my visit and staff were keen to correct these. Good pressure and plenty of hot water from the shower. Fresh towels midweek. Lots of local recommendations. A great stay!

Good location very close to town centre. Really good breakfast. Great value

It was a room above a small pub. Very good breakfast, decor from 1985, tea and coffee not replenished, no teaspoon. Bedroom clean and comfortable. Overpriced.

Great helpful friendly staff !! Nice cosy tidy room as well and convenient for a beautiful town !

I was just in town for the evening and a basic room was all I needed. This place fit the bill. You get what you pay for. Will probably stay again next time I am in the area.

Very convenient central Bury B&B and pub. Single room was small but with a comfortable bed and excellent ensuing bathroom, all very clean. Good cooked breakfast from helpful staff. Excellent value, easy to book and definitely recommended

Stayed here for a night while passing through. Initially attracted by the price which was a little cheaper than others in the area and I try to stay in pubs where possible rather than budget chain hotel type places. Found the whole experience to be really lovely. The room was basic, pretty much as I had expected but was clean throughout and had all the amenities I really needed: tea & coffee, towels, en-suite & shower. Couldn't ask for more really. Staff were friendly and welcoming as was the atmosphere in the bar below. No food available in the evening but there are plenty of places to eat nearby so you're really spoiled for choice. Breakfast was at 8:30 and a full English which was really tasty. It set me up for the day. If you need a simple bed in a warm, friendly environment you need look no further.

I generally like to stay away from budget chain hotels and this place had a pretty agreeable price when compared to other places in the vicinity. Also, having read the only other review which was somewhat bemused rather than outraged, I found that I simply had to book my stay here when I was due to be passing through. I have to say that I found the whole experience to be a very pleasant one. A solo female traveller, I felt the general atmosphere was friendly and welcoming with a warm fire to greet you as you come in. A great start to a good English pub. (The beer selection was very nice too if I'm honest!) The room was simple, not especially large but perfectly serviceable and by no means poky. It was clean throughout and had all the amenities you'd expect from a basic hotel room: Beds with good clean linen, towels, tea & coffee facilities, ensuite with a shower. While the evening was bitterly cold outside, the room was warm and cosy within. Staff were very friendly and happy to help, answer questions. I was told that breakfast was at 8:30 and was I okay with a full English. I was and it turned out a very good breakfast too with a decent pot of tea to go with it (Coffee was available but I didn't have any so can't comment on that). The bar did not serve food in the evening but, given the location, a decent selection of eateries were a stones throw away and it was no problem at all to eat elsewhere. All in all a decent place to stay. If you're looking for somewhere to rest your head and a tasty breakfast in the morning you need look no further.

Pretty good all round. Parking at the back a bit challenging.. Needed an earlier than 08:30 breakfast on the Sunday as on a medic training course from 9am; chef admirably cooked some eggs up for me, which was brill. See you again in 2 weeks.

Lovely stay, great room with everything I needed. Clean and tidy, with a nice en suite. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Cracking little place that's fit for purpose. Very helpful and friendly staff. Great location with easy access to most local places of interest

Just a brief solo stay to attend show at The Apex. Which is a short walk away. Also close to shops etc. It was clean, comfortable & had what I needed no frills. It is pub so there was noise but no issues for me. Nice English Breakfast 8.30am only choice.

Really great staff and fantastic breakfast

Would be great if you stayed here after a night out. The place was in a central location, staff were great, both Khrish and Chris , it was very clean in the room and bathroom Breakfast was ok. (one choice of time on Sunday 8:30 or 8:30, instant coffee and fry up) The reason for the low mark is:- I stayed there for somewhere to sleep but the single mattress was very poor quality so I had to sleep on the pillow also because it was a pub there were people outside my window talking laughing etc then management clearing up till 1am. Also a large Aircon or heating unit on the roof outside, rumbled on and off thoughout the night

All okay

I stayed in room 1: it is very compact but the bed was very comfortable and the room was just the right temperature. There was noise from a boiler I think but after a short while, I didn't notice it. The Full English breakfast was delicious. A great value place to stay!

The lady who worked there 24 hours a day brilliant Great place

Tiny room, blood stain on shower temp dial, rusty towel wrack, stains in toilet bowl, room too hot, noisy outside room near beer garden.

Had a great 2 nights stay here room was big enough and clean. A little warm but there was a fan in the room. The pair running it had only been in there 6weeks so happy with the feedback. Pub very spit and sawdust but l like that not many left but was clean, well stocked bar and seating area was nice as warm evenings. Breakfast was fab both mornings. Will stay there again definitely ✨✨✨✨✨

This property should be struck from any list that advertises stays. The room was no bigger than a broom cupboard and when we went to shower we discovered that there was no hot water. We obviously complained only to be told that they were having a new boiler installed and dint know when there would be any hot water. This had obviously been preplaned so any guests that were booked in should have been warned about this. We cancelled our booking and found other accommodation. This was without doubt the worst accommodation that we have ever come accross. AVOID

I have stayed here many times and will continue to do so on my visits to friends and family in Bury St Edmunds. A special mention for Chris who has taken over the running of Westgate. He certainly enhanced the comfort and enjoyment of my weekend there; with his welcoming and most professional attitude to all his guests.

Nice room, easy accrss to town centre

We enjoyed our overnight stay at The Westgate and would happily stay again. Centrally located and lots to see in the local area.

What a peculiar place the Westgate (formerly the Black Boy - still searchable under that name on Tripadvisor) is. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and checked in quickly. The room - a twin, as we'd left booking accommodation pretty late for a weekend on which, unknown to us, an enormous beer festival was taking place - was as spartan as we'd anticipated, although there is no excuse for not brushing the cobwebs from the window. The shower is tiny - although we're off to Japan in a few weeks, so that's practice, I suppose - and, we would discover the next morning, sounded disconcertingly like a space rocket taking off when switched on. No, the real eccentricity is the breakfast. "Breakfast's at 8.30," the gentleman we took to be the landlord said upon handing over the key. "Until when?," we enquired. "It's at 8.30," he responded. And so, at the anointed hour the next day we appeared in the bar along with the other three groups who had been given the same time. And waited for our order to be taken. But no. First the landlord plonked two slices of white toast each on our table. And then, 10 or so minutes later, plonked two full English breakfasts in front of us, bacon, sausage, Uncle Tom Cobley and all. This, it transpired, *was* the breakfast option. No menu, no alternative offered. And both my partner and I are vegetarian. So he took it away and, 10 minutes or so later, brought them back, sans sausage and bacon, and, as he said, an extra egg each. We're not militant vegetarians - we were more baffled than offended. But surely other veggies have visited. Why not a simple "Full English ok for you both?". What about people with religious requirements? What about people who - and this is entirely possible - just *don't want* a full English breakfast? Has he visited a restaurant before? Is it like those pubs in soap operas where people just order "a pint, please" without specifying a liquid? Is it some sort of performance art? We checked out at 10am, as required. By which I mean we left our key in the room door as the door to the bar had been locked and we couldn't find anybody to give it to. And walked into the Suffolk sunshine, having learned a salutary lesson about not leaving booking accommodation until the last minute.

I would recommend it, worth the price

The pub was a really old and historic. My room was dirty. The tv remote did not work. The hot water tap in the sink did not work. The net curtain was tatty and frayed down both edges. Part of the other curtain came off its rail. the window ledge was black with dirt. The bottom of the toilet bowl was brown! The bathroom radiator paint was chipped and had brown stains on it!. The shower runners were really dirty. The noise from some kind of "generator" outside my window was very noisy , and came on and went off all night long. The room was very small, and therefore very stuffy without the window open. No decaf tea nor decaf coffee for breakfast. There is much to be done to bring this room up to scratch! The ladies toilet in the pub bar area was very dirty, no toilet roll.. A shame, as it s a very central location.

Pub with rooms is under new ownership who are refurbishing so bar etc were all closed when I was there. Room is basic , clean but very tired and needs a refresh relative to this century. Apparently will not do food when open and breakfast unusually is at 8.30 am. I wish good luck to new managers and hope they quickly start work on everything else.

The personal are kind.

A pub with character, clean, helpful staff, bathroom facilities could do with being updated, new management was taking over, a few teething problems but expected, all ready booked a room for next year and I've recommended it to others.

Really good value for money, Chris was great and really helpful, the pub was nice and cosy and the room was perfect for what we wanted, which was somewhere to sleep and shower as we had plans for the weekend, would definitely stay there again

The staff were helpful, but it was not until I had parked someway away in a long stay car park did I find out there was parking accessed from the road behind. By then it was too late to move the car. I was asked what breakfast I wanted and spot on time it was at my table and very good it was. The noise from the pub could be heard in the room until mid-night when they closed up. On the day I was there they were not doing meals in the evening.

Tiny room and en suite. Bed not very comfortable and nowhere to sit but on the bed. No table or work surface.

Good stop over with breakfast. Cheers

Landlord wasnt very friendly

Earliest breakfast is 8.30am which is unheard of, most people staying at hotels would be on business so having to wait for breakfast at 8.30 earliest really isn't convenient

The Westgate was an ideal place to stay for us in Bury St Edmunds. We were only there for one night to visit the nearby Apex Theatre but we used the extra time to visit the lovely shopping centre which was also within easy walking distance. The Westgate was clean and welcoming. Thanks.

Unusually lovely fluffy large bath towels which actually cover one round even if you're not a size 8! Usually bath towels are so small but these were lovely. Comfortable beds and very clean room. The only grumble Ihave was that despite putting the fact that I am vegan on the booking form, no provision was made - no plant based milk or margarine and no understanding of what a vegan breakfast might be. Although I was given a very nice beans on toast with tomato and mushrooms. Expedia rally should ensure that its providers hav e anunderstanding of vegetarian and vegan diets - it is down to them to provide education on that subject. Not difficult. Take responsibility.

Excellent staff, nice hot shower, close to town center, great traditional English breakfast. - Made my day...I truly appreciate it.Thank you all! - Manhattan, New York

Advertised as food but non available. Didn’t fancy breakfast upon seeing kitchen l

👍

Lovely pub near the town centre. Nice clean en suite room. Cooked breakfast included nice.

Overall a brilliant stay.

Nice and central in town centre and 5 minutes away from.my next port of call. When I checked in, I was informed that breakfast would be served at 9am the next morning - unfortunately the same time I had to leave so I missed breakfast.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Westgate. The breakfast was very good and the beer was first class, it was a bonus having BT sport tv meaning we could watch Man City get into the Champions League final. The landlord went out of his way to make us feel comfortable.

Ideal location, friendly, clean.

A nice place to stay and at a very good price. Rooms are very comfortable and the breakfast very good too. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The pub bar is good with some nice real ales. Rooms suffer a little from noise from neighbouring ones - but hey... you would probably expect that to be the case. Would certainly stay there again!

Comfortable stay at an affordable price. Close to the town. Good breakfast. Clean towels each day. Parking on site.

Some people may find the noise from the pub downstairs makes it difficult to sleep (my husband did), but the beds were so comfortable that it did not bother me at all. The parking is tight but it was great to have a designated space, and the proprietor was very helpful with getting in and out. The breakfast was fabulous, and we LOVED the town.

As a socially anxious non-drinker I'm always a little wary of pub stays but went for this as it was close to The Apex venue. My worries were unfounded however as even returning back on a Friday night the pub was calm and not really a party type pub. Plus there is a back/side entrance option if you did want to avoid going through the bar. Staff v accomodating, offered to let me drop my stuff in the room before coming back down to pay and filled my water bottle up before I left in the morning also. Bed was a bit high which could be awkward if short like me but was very comfortable with storage space underneath it (hence the height) and nice compact en suite. There was also a spare blanket incase of being cold! Would stay here for a show at The Apex again.

Nice place to stay. Quite an average pub atmosphere but friendly staff and they made quite an effort to make our stay enjoyable. Decor is dated but quite clean and acceptable. Central location is great.

Small but nice room for the price and convenient to town.

One night only to enjoy the sights of bury st edmunds 2 minute walk to the Abby , cathedral and the main common Clean room good breakfast . Great service

Typical pub accommodation. Comes with potential noise concerns with rooms above bar. Rooms well renovated and comfortable. Sociable and helpful host. Fine one-night stay.

Great room excellent staff very friendly and helpful 👍

A lovely Olde Worlde pub, with a well stocked bar. Friendly & helpful enough staff. Small but adequate warm, white room. Lovely hot electric power shower. Filling, well cooked, set 'Full English' breakfast & white toast presented before you, in bar area. Could choose tea, coffee or decaf. Range of jams & marmalade. Told that at moment due to after effects of Covid they could not provide evening meals, but helpfully directed to other venues who could. Soft, flat pillows, needed to bolster them. TV kept loosing reception every few minutes. Guess due to historic construction of building other people's movements could be heard. However, overall I enjoyed my stay.

Room was clean and adequate, host most amendable, good breakfast. Great location in town. Great value.

I needed an overnight stay for work. The single room was available at a lesser price than the rest. The room was functional. Breakfast was in the offer but didn’t start till 9am. This was a little late for me so can’t comment on this.

Nice base in the town. Rooms good if bordering on the small side - but great for somewhere to stay to see the sights of Burt StE. Breakfast very good. Shower was brilliant. Lots of water and warm. All in all I’d certainly stay again.

Quirky and charming very old building Friendly and helpful team

Once we'd got past the satnav trying to send us down a road blocked by bollards and navigated the one-way system, we found the accommodation to be quiet and comfortable. We had a lovely breakfast too. Will definitely stay again.

Really good location, very central and close to the wedding venue I was there to attend.

Was greeted by the on duty staff whom were friendly and happy to see you Room was very adequate for my purpose it was clean tidy and warm too I slept with the window open as it was summer and was warm even after I got back in while it was still raining Totally recommend this property

Everything was perfect! Thank you very much.

Bathroom basin had hairs on it. Breakfast cup had lipstick on and salt and pepper cruet was dirty. Inner bedroom curtain in room 4 was torn and cobwebs on the windows. I didn't continue with breakfast.

I go to Bury St Edmunds to see shows at The Apex theatre, and this pub is ideal for this, being less than 5 minutes walk away. It is very near to the town centre, just a few minutes' walk down a quiet street, and about 15 minutes' walk from the train station. The rooms have everything you need for a short stay. Beds are comfortable - with extra bedding provided for cold nights - and the shower is efficient. My only complaint would be that the radiators don't seem to work, but this was not really an issue as I did not spend much time in the room. Would stay again next time I go to Bury St Edmunds.

Near to town centre so great for shopping and entertainment.great little pub with friendly staff.this is my second visit and was ideal.pub doesn't shut late so quiet by 12.and I went for a show so didn't get back till after 11pm.fantastic cooked breakfast that's filling for the rest of the day.i enjoy staying here and Roxy the dog is beautiful.x

The room matched online property photos. Though small and unpretentious it was clean and comfortable. The English breakfast provided was filling and the proprietor quite friendly.

Property was handy to the Abbey and Cathedral, and to the shipping district.

Friendly welcome. Comfy bed. Cosy room; insulated from pub & traffic clamour. Excellent cooked breakfast to start a busy day. Limited on-site parking. Walkably close to a good range of places for supper or ethnic dinners; may need to book by midday for your favourite spot, esp. at weekends.

was warmly welcomed by beautiful roxyxx and staff member was polite and helpful.i knew it was a pub so i would not compain about noise as i wasnt that loud and went dowstairs for a drink before going out. i went for a concert at the apex...excellent and then came back and had a drink in the pub and went to bed 11pm by 11.30 no noise downstairs and quiet.had great nights sleep..bed so comfy for me as i have fibromyalgia and m.e.and arthritis so sleep is difficult...but i slept till 6am which is excellent...went down for breakfast at 8.30 and had a lovely full english.met 3 different staff members all were friendly and helpful to me with the facilities and directions to venue..all in all great time and have booked again to go stay in december when i am attending another concert at the aapex.

Fabulous time, well recommend the Black Boy and a stay in Bury St Edmunds

The Licensee, his staff and the usual suspects (Locals) who sup ale and play pool there are all warmly welcoming... Not in that sickly... slick painted on smile way you get at larger, national outlets... but that good old fashion sit-down and pull up a chair..! It has one fault... The bar has to shut... Shame... Brilliant place...

the room was above the bar and we could not sleep with noise from the juke box

Room was very small and there wasn't a chair. I literally had to climb into bed, the mattress was about 3 feet from the floor. Breakfast- No fruit juices or cereals on offer. Cooked breakfast, not asked how I'd like the egg cooked. Toast arrived and not asked white or brown bread; generous with number of slices though.

small clean room with everything I needed. OK for me but others might want to note that it is extremely noisy as the rooms are above a beer garden with music and loud voices until well after midnight. Also as it was a business trip I needed to leave too early to take advantage of the free breakfast, which could only be served "from about 8-30am" I didn't actually see any staff except the barman who checked me in. There was no one present when I left, so just left the key in the door. None of this bothered me, but worth noting for those who it would bother!

Parking could be a nightmare if all rooms were taken.

Friendly staff, room is very basic but had most of what I needed - hairdryer/towels/kettle/soap. Did not have shampoo/conditioner though. Bed was comfortable.

Unfortunately we experienved a lot of outside noise from the pub customers which prevented us from getting to sleep, this disruption lasted until well after midnight.

Music from pub was loud and went on till 12pm. No food served in pub apart from breakfast, on checking out we had to go hunting for a member of staff. Room was clean.

The Station pub was closed when we arrived at BSE which was a surprise. The main town was well within walking distance of the hotel but it was not disabled friendly so our third musketeer stayed at the Premier Inn which could accommodate his wheelchair. The hotel served breakfast with the best coffee that has been served to me at a hotel that I've stayed at but not the best coffee I've ever tasted and the food was good to eat. The hotel is quite old, the stairs narrow and the hotel did not have a lift, but the room I was in was good. The bar's beer selection was small but they had Abbot Ale on tap so I was satisfied. There was a quiet area at the back of the hotel which was capable of taking our friend's wheelchair and he managed the ground floor toilet by getting out of the chair and hobbling in on his crutches. The restaurants visited were Wetherspoons, Cafe Rouge and Le Maison Bleu all of which did as expected with the cheese board at the Maison Bleu being particularly good.

Breakfasts very good and hot ! No food available..bit dissappointed ! Another pillow would be usefull.

It’s a public house which has rooms. I had a single en-suite which was fine, clean & tidy & tea making facilities. Full English breakfast, plenty of tea & toast nicely cooked & presented. There isn’t a reception but proprietor is around getting on with his work, so you may need find him
