Two messages sent via Expedia in advance of stay, no response. Message sent again through online check in, still no response. First room stunk of damp carpet. Moved to second room, which was marginally better, didn't smell. Air vent in bathroom disgustingly dirty. No welcome pack in the room. No fridge in the room. Stale biscuits in the room. Currently undergoing renovations so scaffolding up and banging so a bit noisy. Notification of indoor swimming pool and gym closure after booking, but too late to cancel. No compensation or response to messages about our disappointment about this, despite we know they got our messages as they knew we were no longer bringing our dog. Bar staff seemed very confused about simple orders and housekeeping removed personal item (albeit accidentally, but we only got half back, with no compensation). Hotel was fine for a couple of nights, but wouldn't go back. Staff try and be helpful, but fall short of good customer service.
Clean room but a bit old fashioned. Friendly staff.
All fine for a one night stay. Little things like staff not cleaning up drink spills or even apologies for spilling the drinks! Other staff extremely attentive & almost overly apologetic about minor things…! Restaurant - as a group of 6 we had to wait for all 6 to receive both their starters & then their main courses… after a few minutes it became awkward. Even having bottles of prosecco opened & glasses provided was a ‘waiting game’ … should we open them or is he going to come back & do it…?! Pool & changing rooms require some considerable maintenance as do other areas … obvious work in places like the bar area … not sure if things like rolled up bits of carpet needs to be left in the public areas? Otherwise, as said for one night it was good.
Service has improved a lot at The Grand. The hotel is a little tired and my room smelt musty and had stains on the carpet, despite being one of the renovated rooms. The location is ideal, being close to the railway station. The bed was very comfortable and Ligo in the restaurant was extremely helpful at breakfast. I stay every year and check in was much better this year, with my room being available on arrival.
Hôtel désuet, chambre hors d’âge à la propriété douteuse. Odeur désagréable dans la chambre. Seul pont positif la proximité de la gare.
Very helpful, friendly staff, delicious food, luxurious hotel, loved my huge room and bathroom (best shower ever!), parking available on the street and in the garage, and on the seafront, about 10 minutes walk into town. Brilliant experience.
This is the place to be if you arrive by train and no better base for the Agatha Christie Festival or anything at Torre Abbey. The walk along the waterfront is elegant and safe, even at night. The staff are wonderful and if you like good, old-fashioned service and a traditional English breakfast, you will love it. The pool, bar and lounges are spacious and comfortable and the rooms are clean.
Repair to our room was requested. The repair person came noted the repairs needed and nobody did anything about it. Room was not made up on 3rd day talk about lack of customer care
Nicely appointed room, and common spaces. Could see the bay from my window. WiFi in my room, 427, was marginal. The bathtub is unusable as it is against the slope of the Mansard, you can not stand up in the bath, either to shower or get in or out.
Great sea view from our room. Enjoyed a great massage at the spa. Enjoyed using the pools. Lovely evening meal in the restaurant.
In a convenient area and greta views from room. A little dated for my liking but really good overall
This was our second visit to the Grand Hotel in Torquay. We definitely enjoyed this stay, loved the bed, spacious room, sea view and lovely balcony. The room was warm, so we left the balcony door open and it was more comfortable. Breakfast was buffet style, which was okay, though a bit disappointing for the price. The table hadn't been cleaned, and cutlery was missing. Food was okay. Checking in and out was easy enough. Lovely building, sea view excellent. Managed to get free parking across the road so that was a bonus.
The Grand supported our needs and promptly handled any miscommunication that came up. The spa is worth your time and the staff were courteous & friendly. Events did mean we couldn't enjoy all the facilities but alternate activities were found and enjoyed.
Hotel itself was nice but bath or shower didn’t work they fixed bath next day and then toilet seat broke. Had a nice scone and tea and ploughman’s lunch however chef must of gone on holiday as fish and chips was dreadful
Location is amazing - right by the station, the beach and the festival we were attending. Hotel bar is gorgeous but swimming pool area needs some attention and more loungers. Rooms at the top of the hotel are incredibly hot but a fan is provided (we only found that the next morning!). Staff are super friendly and helpful.
The hotel is an icon of the area however the upkeep of the hotel has definitely slipped. The staff did their best to help out where possible but the stay was uncomfortable at best. We really wanted to love it but facing a train station with very worn out bed and a bathroom with mold didn’t have us resting as we had planned. Unfortunate.
Glamorous hotel, faded in places and could do with a little refurb in the bedroom corridors and around the pool, but we had a lovely stay, the facilities are great and our room was well-appointed. Great location, right next to the station and lovely view of Torquay. We will definitely return.
Staff were friendly enough.Reception/bar/restaurant was nice.some areas of hotel look like they need a refresh/updating.Swimming pool outside needs a refresh or clean?and changing rooms which also weren’t that clean.Room was ok but a bit tired in place. It was clean but window wouldn’t open.Breakfast quite a good choice.Coffee was already made up in a machine which was cold and too strong.Good location though for lots of places.
Good location. Disappointing bathroom.
Brilliant stay well looked after
Old-world warmth of welcome to children and adults. Main reception room is a beautiful large high windowed, graceful, room resplendent with its numerous couches, library, sea views and perfect for rainy days. The pork belly and fresh vegetables were delicious. A realistically priced, child-welcoming, truly charming hotel with generous pool towels, for the much enjoyed indoor and outdoor pool. The location is great for quick walks, short taxi and train rides to an abundance of child-appropriate fun. The staff are delightful. Grandeur and hospitality without the price-tag, breakfast and bedroom more than adequate, we look forward to our next visit very much. If you need power-showers, and ten-star waitress-service breakfasts, air conditioning, ... this hotel is not for you, but how lucky we are to have this wonderful hotel exactly as it is.
Parking costs additional 10 pounds, staff not experienced and not very helpful especially at reception to checkin. Had to wait a long and she was rude. Breakfast is good Venue is overrated Hotel is old
The Grand Hotel is poorly maintained and needs updating.
Paid for a sea view room but got less than a partial view on the first floor... The duvet covers and bed covers had holes and were dirty... The wifi was very bad ..we had to use our mobile data throughout our stay...
Hotel is close to train station and staff are nice. Unfortunately, this hotel has seen better days. I would not recommend anyone stay here.
Generally our stay was ok. The entrance to the hotel is fabulous and well maintained and the staff are friendly. The indoor pool and changing rooms need a bit of an upgrade. There was a musty smell in our room and the corridor outside. Also not enough hooks to hang towels.
Right on the beach and a lovely walk to the seafront and town centre of Torquay. Outdoor pool is heated and an absolute delight. Staff sweet and friendly. Gym a little dated but great to keep on top of fitness.
Lovely friendly hotel the pool was great. Overall it’s a bit dated but they are trying their best and our 2 night stay was great
The hotel was not 4 stars more like 2. Reception area nice but after that poor. Bedroom needed updating. Too many dogs on the premises. It was like being at Crufts. Shower pressure was a trickle and reported it twice at reception but to no avail. One good point, the staff were all excellent and worked extremely hard.
Arrived and greeted by the most incredibly kind staff. They really couldnt have given us any more to make us feel welcome. Want to give a huge thanks to Robin on reception. My husband has a neck injury and the staff even offered to get pain medications from the local Pharmacist for us. The food in 1881 resturant within the grand hotel was delicious and served by Felix. What a kind gentleman he was also. Even making my young boy happy by giving him free mocktails! Both inside and outsoor pools area great addition to our stay, the breakfast is tasty and always left each morning with full bellies. We will definitely be coming back. We were so sad to leave today. Thank you all for a wonderful stay
I have stayed here a few times I do like this hotel, out of season and in the busy season 😊
Really nice hotel, showing its age a little bit and could do with a bit of TLC in some of the common areas. Great stuff, with great service at the check-in, concierge and bar. Breakfast was good although the staff seamed quite overworked. Nice pool area outdoor. Outdoor pools were good. Gym could do with a little bit of a refit - feeling kind of old and it would be nice to have a sauna /steamroom in the spa area.
Over an hour late checking us in with no real concern the room wasnt ready for 3pm check in wouldn’t have minded but reception just didn’t care we had to sit about waiting. Room was ok quite clean bed was comfortable windows had all hand marks over them We were in 4th floor with partial sea view which was quite nice facing the train track but that didn’t really bother us . Overall look of the building inside and out is quite run down would be a lovely hotel if this was looked at . Lovely warm pool both inside and out. Breakfast was fine but had an evening meal and was not that great which h was a shame because it cost a bit Overall nice location had a lovely time in Torquay Would we stay in this hotel again ? Probably not I think there are nicer places around for less money or better for the money we paid
Enjoyed my stay although room was far to hot .
Overall very clean but ventilator in bathroom has not been cleaned for a while. Also areas around lampshades/bulbs not routinely cleaned. Breakfast and dinner options are excellent. Room comfort was excellent as well. Hotel location - excellent. Limited car parking space. It would be great if reception staff can offer advice around alternative parking options or more information provided when booking.
Elegance from another age. Some parts of the hotel need an update and refresh
all was quite good
Great 3 days with family
We have given less stars this year. Was highly disappointed in a few things. Bathroom, cracked sink glued, very low toilet , child’s height, no shower curtain , toilet seat loose, toilet handle did not function correctly. Food in dining was not worth the money, returned 3 times . Only one dining area open this time , at night other one with views was closed after 6pm. Pool area needs upgrading, locals attend the pool daily meaning there are less beds for those in vacation and we had broken sun bed ( 3 were broken ) pool also needs cleaning. For what we payed we were highly disappointed and will not be returning to this hotel. Others complained also.
This was a very nice hotel and and we had a Sea View however due to the flying birds around the area, the windows were dirty with bird poo. The hotel should ensure cleanliness of the windows too.
No usb sockets for phone and the kettle did not work. Also was a couple so why only one hot chocolate?? But couldn’t use it anyway as the kettle did not work. One of the female bar staff was very abrupt and forgot to make a pot of tea I ordered. I had to return to the bar twice to remind the staff I had ordered it by which time all my friends had finished their drinks.
Loved our stay the staff are friendly and the pool area is nice good do with a few more loungers thou.
The sea views are stunning and the staff are wonderful but the property would really benefit from modernising.
Lovely location but hotel could do with updating. Decor tired and old as is furniture. No air con and desk fan inadequate in this heat. Cracked tiles in bathroom and shower was barely a trickle
The hotel had no A/C and our room was on the top floor, the window could only open and inch so ne ventilation. It became so unbearable we had to leave the hotel at 3am and get a taxi home. All the rooms were full so no alternative apart from a fan could be offered
Albeit a little old fashioned it retains charm and character.
Staff after amazing. For the price of the room, it was not worth it. The room had stains in the carpet, although cleaned well such as the bathroom and no dust, the room felt grubby and dirty. Needs a good lick of paint and clean flooring
Room was very clean and quiet we had a great view. Breakfast was fine and the restaurant areas were clean and pleasant. Hotel needs a lick of paint outside, and probably some money spent. But overall the Grand Torquay is a perfectly adequate hotel in a good location especially if arriving by train.
Very nice
The room was awful, dirty and there was someone else’s pants left in the room. We stayed in a deluxe sea view. The bed was really really bad. Staff are friendly and the main reception and bar is nice. Breakfast was standard.
Reception staff were extremely helpful in sorting out a very minor problem, which was quickly rectified. But once you leave the reception area, the whole interior area needs some TLC. As a dog owner we completely understand the and have absolutely no problems with the reasons for separate dining areas, however there was zero assistance available in our assigned breakfast dining area.
Nice grand hotel. Well maintained. Room does not have air conditioning, even though there was an air-conditioning panel which did not work. It was a hot British summer. The front desk staff was pretty curt about it. However, Rob, the night manager managed to sort out the issue somewhat by providing us with some fans which helped. He was so much better than the earlier front desk staff that handled the situation. Hats off to you Rob!
Nice hotel Very good and friendly reception staff Restaurant was brilliant
Our room was 'a compact 'positioned at the rear overlooking the station. On the roof below were extraction vents which were noisy and extremely ugly. Having said this the room was clean with a nice sized bathroom, and cheap for the time of year.
Great hotel with so many beautiful features. All staff were engaging and courteous and responsive.
A very enjoyable 5 night stay.Very good value for money.Polite efficient staff and very clean.
Despite telling the server that I could not have a certain food and that being noted on my order, my food appeared WITH that item. Very unhappy about that! Our room was tiny and not serviced until after 4pm each day which was inconvenient. The pool looks dirty as the floor of it needs painting. For the comfort and relaxation of the majority, smoking and vaping shouldn't be allowed poolside. Also there were 3 young women playing heavy beat music really loudly poolside. I was trying to listen to an audio book with headphones and on full volume and I could still hear it - and I am partially deaf!! The staff did nothing about this. Other guests were irritated as were we and left the area earlier than planned. Being British we all said nothing to them. This was our third or forth visit, the reception area, conservatory and patio areas have a nice atmosphere. The staff are friendly, breakfast is the usual buffet style if not included in your room rate book it the day before for £12 each otherwise on the day its £15. You can park at the rugby club - tell reception and they will add it to your bill £9.30 for 24 hours.
Amazing location for the beach and harbourside. BUT hotel extremely tired and dated in its decor. Toilets in reception/ bar area particularly awful. Wouldnt go back as feel the 4 star is not appropriate. The rooms are also not all sound proofed. I left my partner and daughter splashing around in the bath and could hear every word all the way down the corridor and by the lift. Also really disappointed that we wernt allowed to take an alcoholic drink next to the poolside on a beautiful weekend of weather.
Lovely hotel. Delicious food. Great friendly staff especially the supervisor who works in the bar area she was so friendly and had a lovely smile. Also too the very kind and hard working male waiter who also worked in the bar area such a hard working kind person. And to all the other staff such a lovely bunch of people
This is a lovely old traditional hotel
We have visited this hotel several times, reception staff very welcoming, room however was very disappointing, cracked sink in the bathroom, shower curtain very cheap, room was small, needs updating.
Old timey hotel. Close to train station.
The staff were fine but the hotel itself was a real letdown. The changing rooms for the swimming pool are a disgrace. The rooms are so dated I don't think they have been touched since the hotel was built over 100 years ago ! The hotel location is good. I can only say that I would rather have stayed in a Premier Inn or even a Travelodge as both are better than the Grand in the room department. At least they don't have holes in the bedsheets and curtains and a fraction of the price.
Had a really lovely stay at the hotel, with reception being great and an upgraded room. Loved the breakfast and dinner and the view in the Compass Bar was great. Would definitely stay again. It’s not pristine and perfect everywhere but we found in had faded charm and a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended.
The room looked great, however the bed was too springy and soft, felt like it had been used for jumping on on sank in the middle, we had 2 days of cold showers, as the shower thermostat valve was broken and just spun, made reception aware and said they would send an engineer, nobody came, reported again on leaving. The last thing you want after a 4 hour drive, is a cold shower and a soft uncomfortable bed, but to top it off you could hear the people from the next room, as the adjoining door is not soundproof, and then when eventually did fall asleep, was woken at 7am on bank holiday Monday by a dog barking loudly in one of the rooms close by. Didn’t get much better at breakfast, table had no cutlery, my daughter asked for scrambled egg, came out when we had finished our breakfast, there were no cereal bowls, asked the waiter, he replied what type of cereal bars? Went to get a plate instead, it was hot, but still wet and with bits of food, where not washed properly. This hotel looks nice in the photos, in reality parts are tired and needs a refurb, the restaurant staff at breakfast need better training and poor for a 4 star hotel,
All of the staff were very welcoming and the main bar , reception area and restaurant rooms were very spacious. Bedrooms small and tired looking . Spa pool and outside pool area in need of upgrade, gardens lovely.
This is a beautiful hotel with wonderful staff. Sure, the building itself is looking a little tired, but it has some stunning features in the public areas. Every member of staff is so friendly and helpful. Breakfast has plenty of choice, and the evening meals we had were superb. Our room had a fridge and a safe. As a woman, I also appreciated the magnifying mirror in the bathroom.
Not so Grand... When booking I asked for two things - a parking place and a quiet room. I got the parking place. Our room was three paces from a noisy lift. Our room had a connecting door (closed and locked) which meant we heard every word from next door, all through the night. Hotel staff wouldn't or couldn't offer us any help. The offer to change rooms was only given late in the day when we were about to go out on our last night. Too late.
Being coming to the grand hotel for many years the majority of staff were excellent friendly and helpful but I did find the reception staff un helpfull and rude I did find parts of the hotel very tired and need of a uplift
The dinner was very, very good. Food was very very good, staff was excellent.
Great hotel, wonderful staff very friendly
Beautiful old hotel. Swimming pool Very comfy Right by the sea la
We love the elegance of this hotel . Location is good as it’s near the train station and also has a bus stop opposite .
Lovely room, excellent service from bar staff but breakfast a little disappointing from previous stays.
This really was a lovely hotel. Shout out to the staff, who were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The only negative thing is that it is a little dated
Very nice helpfull staff, very clean stunning view from room. And really nice food breakfast was lovely.
Lovely Easter family break away. Fantastic room big and spacious family room with a beautiful view
All was very good except for a fish dinner wafer thin and no meat .That is the only thing, staff were very attentive all times
Great place but needs a coat of paint and the balconies needs proper refurbishing. The staff at breakfast are all superb, give them a raise. Cu soon 😎👍
We had a wonderful time, loved the view and charm of this old hotel. Hope to visit again.
Really lovely relaxing stay
The room was small but overall the hotel was good especially the breakfast
We booked a deluxe room with sea view, but it was only the view that was special, room was very basic, did not even get bottled water in the room, the shower curtain is very cheap and plastic so clings to you while you shower, breakfast was okay but lacked addition items we would expect from an expensive hotel, such as fresh fruit and sealed yogurts and jams. this is very much a standard provision hotel and not GRAND, other than the building the pathway to the entrance from the seafront should also be lit from the side of the hotel as this is not safe
No hot water
Returning guests, enjoyed a very pleasant weekend
Great time in a comfortable hotel
Good location, spacious room. Bed was okay, but excellent food and room service.
Staff were as usual friendly and helpful. In a lovely position on the front. What lets the Grand down is the lack of parking, they have now lost free parking in the rail station, so you can park in a rugby ground over the road for £5 per day or in their "garage " which is really a large shed for £10 . Having said that we really love the hotel and will come back 2 or 3 times a year as usual.
Great location, friendly staff. Very nice room, warm and comfortable bed. Hot reliable water. Very good breakfast and dinner. Swimmers pool a little tiered and cooler in the changing rooms.
Time is relentless but they are trying hard to reverse its effects....The beds are amazing but why cant they wait the outside of the building....it would look amazing!
Warm welcome, quick check in. Lovely, large area with comfortable settees to sit in and enjoy a view of the sea. Room (standard double) a reasonable size, comfortable bed. Bathroom was a little dated and the shower was tiny- would’ve been better to have an over the bath shower or my preference take the bath out and have a large walk in shower! Breakfast was quite good - good choice of hot and cold items but cheap orange juice. Lovely view of the sea while having breakfast. Tried to book the restaurant for an evening meal but couldn’t as the restaurant was at capacity and therefore the bistro was closed as well.
The rooms could do with some updating.
Just for one night to celebrate Wife's Birthday - Thoroughly enjoyable Food was superb !!- we'll be back
The hotel is very handy from the railway station. The bar area was a delight to relax in, with the chap playing the baby grand. The chairs are comfy but low for eating from (for me 5'4) The restaurant is colourful and the breakfast was good. I was in a room at the back of the hotel and the decor was simple, the room was fine though (i like the old furnitire) and warm enough for me (im a cold person) but maybe a little overpriced. The front rooms , with the views, may be more worth the money (but i was only for 1 night arriving late so no need for a view) I would like to see refilled bottles for bathroom products rather than 'disposables'. I liked the local art at affordable prices in the cabinets.
Lovely traditional hotel overlooking the bay
I stayed for a work trip, very close to centre of Torquay, free street parking. Staff helpful. Good breakfast buffet. Will stay again.
Very friendly staff and great food
We stayed a few years ago and very much enjoyed the pool, hot tub, steam & sauna room. We didn’t realise that due to the fire in 2022 that the only thing remaining was the pool. The changing room was freezing and the pool freezing, someone mentioned they were painting in the day and had the doors open to dry the paint. Very disappointing. We would not come back again.
