Poets House is a little gem that you are lucky when you find one. Within a stones throw of the Cathedral its location in the centre of Ely is a great base to explore from. The bedroom was superb and the dining was most pleasing.
The roads to Ely were not the most direct or well maintained and obviously the scenery was a little plain
Breakfast good Location excellent
Parking not great Quite a walk from hotel
Great facilities. Rooms great and the team are amazing. Feels very homely. Breakfast was great both days
No issues
Very well located. Staff were very helpful and understanding.
First class in all be respects, staff v friendly welcoming helpful be and great
No light over bathroom sink made room v dark and shaving difficult.
Room Bar (best cocktail in a long while at last one not too sweet for me) Dining Room
Excellent location, quiet, comfortable room. Air con was a bonus. Nice products in the bathroom.
Parking was a short walk away, but free! So not all bad.
It was a really fun experience!! Great hotel, amazing bath, something distinct and comfortable.
Nothing!
Reception staff on arrival were excellent as we're bar and dining staff, too. Excellent chef, had breakfast, two mornings, and an evening meal which were faultless.
The kettle in the room was in the corner by the wardrobe and was awkward to plug into the socket and dark there even with the light on.
The room was clean
Room was very hot with no effective air conditioning. Unloading and having to go off and park was a pain. Food was mediocre and some staff seemed bored and unenthusiastic.
Excellent location and view very close to cathedral.
The hotel was clean and comfortable.
The toilet wobbled when used which was a bit annoying
Central location
Wedding on the day we arrived
The room was lovely with a beautiful bathroom. The bed was big and comfortable. The staff were lovely and helpful. Lovely courtyard/garden seating area. Hotel parking was available. Great location near the cathedral.
Really well appointed room, lovely decoration and cleanliness throughout, fantastic breakfast
The air-conditioning in the room was useful but not hugely efficient
The receptionist was pleasant and arranged for the case to be delivered to the room. The bedroom was pleasantly decorated. The shower was good.
The double bed was a suprise- would have expected a king size for the price. Although they accommodated easting outside on a hot evening the menu and food was lack-lustre. The service slow and verging on offhand. The breakfast was adequate but one butter pat per setting and none on the buffet table poor. The coffee cool, and the waitress seemed grumpy but not rude.
Central location, stylish boutique style hotel. Had busy outside eating area but with the great double glazing we didn't hear a thing!
Bathroom looked a little tired (sealant round shower door peeling away, cracked floor tile etc) but nothing a quick fix couldn't sort but it was spotless and did not effect stay. Please improve on your scrambled eggs - I was served a chopped up unseasoned omelette
The staff are outstanding so friendly and accommodating in every way. They made our stay very relaxing
Excellent accommodation, staff welcoming and professional. Food pleasant .
Tiny 200ml bottles for non alcoholic drinks, small selection of non alcoholic drinks and absence of any low alcoholic/zero alcohol largers/cider.
Location, room staff and breakfast
Evening meals and drinks very pricey
Comfortable beds, air conditioning, staff welcoming and helpful.
Location
We were in a room where the toilet facilities were for the disabled.
A delightful setting, with lovely rooms, scenic walled-garden, and an amazing location as it is next to the Cathedral and across from the high street. The copper bath was such a luxurious feature in the rather grand bathroom.
The rooms could benefit from a fridge and the carpets looked a little tired. Its central location means you have to move your car elsewhere, but it makes sense based on the central location.
Great location, relaxed atmosphere and lovely rooms. Really good that everywhere is accessible and they have a lift - often rare in historic buildings which are now hotels.
Nothing, everything was lovely.
The hotel is beautiful. The staff we encountered were absolutely lovely and friendly. The food was amazing too. We will come back.
We didn't quite understand why we couldn't order a cocktail when we arrived and were told that no cocktails are made for weddings. It was even more surprising when our friends turned up with cocktails after the ceremony. We were puzzled by the reason why the response varied and mainly why no cocktails, especially when there is such a great bar full of amazing choices.

Friendly and Helpful staff
Immaculate room and as soon as you pull into the courtyard you know it’s a beautiful setting.
Not much!
I seldom write reviews, and this one is not to criticise but to inform potential guests and, hopefully, the hotel. My wife is recovering from a road accident so we booked here specifically because the hotel has a lift. However, the hotel is in 2 parts, either side of an entrance arch, and the lift serves one side only. On arrival we found our allocated room was on the first floor of the side without a lift. We were immediately offered an alternative on the other side, but it was on the front of the hotel overlooking a busy road. My wife decided she could manage the stairs, and indeed she did. We enjoyed the stay very much, but if a lift is critical to you then you need to point this out with a request during booking and the hotel could make this clearer in their information.

Would have been better with a coffee machine and a fridge in the room

Room and bar area
Good breakfast but a lack of fresh fruit. Fruit juice was concentrate.
Lack of good coffee making facilities in the rooo
Excellent breakfast. The room was great with a lovely view of the cathedral. Overall a great stay.
We had a superb stay at Poets House. I genuinely can't find a single negative thing to say about the place. We had a beautiful large room, quiet, comfortable and with an amazing view on Ely Cathedral. Everything we needed was present in the room: slippers, towels, toiletteries, tea and coffee, biscuits... The hotel is at a few minutes walk from the railway station, the Cathedral and the High Street with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. We enjoyed the breakfast in the room, and it was amazing! Dinner was excellent as well. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Beautiful room. Quiet and comfortable. Very clean . Love the huge bath and shower . Room large and king-size bed. Tea coffee crisps biscuits. Towelling robes and slippers. Small bottles of shampoos etc. Plenty of good quality towels. Close to shops and catheral. Breakfast was superb perfect. Staff friendly.
Room I was good & very clean.
I struggled with getting natural ventilation as the windows are not easy to open. Would be helpful if this was easier, to let in fresh air/ claustrophobics like myself. I panicked a bit when I couldn’t figure this out quickly.
Perfect location. Beautiful room
Please can you put magnifying mirrors in the rooms for makeup and shaving. So many hotels don’t do this and it is an essential for most women.
Beautiful building, great location, large room with comfortable bed
Breakfast could have been better. Good variety but eggs not great and small portions
Location
Car park not on site
Service was great. Got a room upgrade free of charge. Food was fantastic. Room was comfortable and a lovely bed with a fantastic bath in the room.
First world problems! The room was so big that it was difficult for the heating in the room to actually warm it up to a decemt temperature. Also, the only other comment was some of the staff were a little unfriendly, however still professional.
Superb service, room and location
Pricy!
The staff were great. In particular, the bar staff were really on their game and knowledgeable. The location was also brilliant, right in the middle of town. Easy to access everything. The room was quiet and good for someone with children.
The hot water for the shower was lukewarm, at best. The duvet was coming out the covers and was far too large for the bed. The room seemed a little basic for a suite, we were expecting a little more flourish.
The room was very spacious and comfortable with a lovely view towards the cathedral. The bathroom was very large and well equipped with a large walk in shower and separate bath. Very nice. The restaurant was excellent and service very good. A nice, spacious and comfortable modern bar area was also enjoyable. The hotel location was very convenient, just on the edge of the main shops so everything was in easy reach. Ideally situated in the historic part for visit to the cathedral and Oliver Cromwell's house.
The room overlooked a main road so there was some traffic noise but late at night this wasn't a problem. The wonderful view across the green towards the cathedral more than compensated for slight traffic noise.
Liked the size of the bedroom;liked the comfort ,the size of the bed .The staff were lovely and helpful. We had a really lovely stay
Nothing
The room (15) was a very good size.
The lighting could have been better in the tea/coffee making area. Also, there was no light in the wardrobe so a bit difficult to see, especially if you wanted to use the safe which was located therein.
The room was spacious and comfortable with a great view of the cathedral. We liked the garden restaurant area. All the staff were friendly, helpful and competent. It was a good location for exploring Ely.
Excellent location and restaurant
Wifi could be better
The room was good, decor not to our taste but clean and functional. The bathroom was very spacious with a great shower and an unusual bath. They accommodated our bed requirements. It was warm in the room - which was good on a cold spell in January. They were able to serve breakfast in our room.
The parking is a bit of a pain, a good 5 min walk to the parking area, when we had a fair amount to unload because we'd brought stuff for our son - it wasn't great. Reception staff did all we asked and were polite but quite unfriendly. The reason we won't be returning is the cost of the food. £19 each for a small continental breakfast in our room was expensive. The evening meal similarly, whilst the food was ok it wasn't worth it for 2 courses. In other words 2 mornings breakfasts and one dinner came to £174 over the cost of the room. In my head that adds nearly £200 to our bill.
Staff and location
Having to park offsite and walk with luggage back to the hotel
Great location with easy parking opposite. My room was beautiful room with a super comfy bed & amazing shower. The bath was big enough to swim in - literally ! Good selection of tea, coffee, water & biscuits which were kept topped up. Very friendly, helpful staff without being intrusive & the food was really good - yumm. Thank you for a great start to 2026 🌟
The room was outstanding.
Everything was fab. No complaints.
Room was fantastic. Bath in bedroom, large shower in bathroom and very comfortable bed. Dinner was very nice and we had some drinks after in the bar which had a lovely atmosphere.
Limited parking. Had to use car park around the corner,
Located so close in the town to everything .Hotel is stunning , decor , attention to detail , staff are so helpful and friendly and literally will do anything to make your stay special , restaurant is amazing
Beautiful room, well decorated, tasteful and very spacious. The staff were all delightful, respectful and knew their jobs.
There was no mirror near to the sockets and dressing table so no-where to do hair/makeup…could easily be rectified by putting a mirror on the dressing table. Sofa was at right angles to the tv so not ideal to snuggle up to watch but there was enough room for us to move the sofa. Lovely big shower but using the shower from the hose, as opposed to the rainwater shower, caused a leak through the door and hinges. Meal was lovely - a special new year party meal and great to see a nice veggie option however was all quite carb heavy and the veg all sautéed…I like fresh veg. I was also surprised for a hotel offering the quality and price, not to have a mini-fridge in the room.
The location was perfect to visit Ely Cathedral. We were able to park our vehicle in the hotel courtyard that was very helpful as my husband has a mobility problem. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Staff are kind and helpful. There is nothing we did not like about Poets House.
Nothing.
Lovely old building and nicely decorated.
Ideal location. Room was nice but on main road ground level. Noisy late at night & early morning. Pedestrian crossing right outside room. Light from that came into room 😫 Very Noisy heating unit in room. 😤
All of above plus no normal English breakfast tea in room. Only Earl Grey.
Very friendly welcome and early check in which is always a good thing. The room was well equipped with toiletries and tea making facilities. The Bar area was a very nice place to get a drink and a small snack especially if you are meeting friends. The restaurant had a relaxed friendly atmosphere with excellent staff and good food. Breakfast was a mix of buffet and a choice of cooked food. All of which was very good.
Although they offer parking it is a five minute drive away and walk back One can drop off bags at the hotel though . Parking is behind a gate in a main town car park.
Location, service and food.
We arrived without knowing about the parking arrangements and oblivious about the massive Christmas Market at the cathedral which we should have pre-booked. Room had very subtle lighting and cold. TV terrestial was not working.
Beautiful hotel, in a very central location. Wonderful staff who were very friendly and welcoming. Nice bar and tasty cocktails. Spacious bedroom, with comfy bed.
Breakfast area was lovely, but the food itself could have been of a better quality. Couldn't open windows in bedroom.
Best hotel in the area by far.
Room a bit overpriced for the Fens.
Fabulous location and a very comfortable, quite luxurious room. Excellent pillows !!
A little more choice at breakfast would have be great.
The location was perfect, and the room was fabulous

Clean professional and beautiful decoration.
A bit over priced to be honest. But worth the experience.
Food excellent staff brilliant and a tremendous room
No-one's fault that you have to head off to the car park a little distance away
The room was excellent. Spacious and well laid out with excellent facilities. The copper bath in the room was a lovely touch and made for a wonderful stay. Excellent hotel with exceptional staff.

Comfort, style and location.
You can park for loading/unloading but overnight parking is 5 minutes walk but it IS free and secure. Also, while rooms at the front have a view of the cathedral it also directly fronts the main road - we changed to a garden view room so we could open the windows without any noise intrusion
First class dining, comfort and service.
Loved the room Loved the bath - best ever! Loved location Very nice dinner in restaurant Very attentive waiter Nice room beauty products
No coffee machine in room No fridge Went to have a bath and found moisturiser had nearly run out (I had to go and ask for more - which was rectified quickly but shouldn’t have happened) Tissue box had one tissue! Continental breakfast a bit lacking - but we were there at opening so perhaps it improved?
Great hotel albeit a bit expensive. Friendly and helpful staff, very comfortable room snd bathroom
Price of room
Great location. Friendly staff at reception. Bed was comfortable. Walking distance to everything I Ely.
Too much light in the room over night . Floors are quite slippery in the bathroom . As we had a lot of luggage We needed More space for toiletries makeup , suitcases . Teabags were not replaced unless we asked. Would prefer not to include breakfast. We didn’t really eat enough to cover the cost
Beautiful property in a lovely location. My third visit and it will not be the last.
