The rooms exceed the overall quality of the 'pub' which was pleasant enough, but the room quality was better than average, we eat in one night and out the other, would definitely recommend The Old Fire Engine House for dinner.

We would have preferred some fruit and yogurt for breakfast. We were told that they had stopped because most people didn't want that. Perhaps they could advertise a continental breakfast and if booked ahead that could be arranged.

Very disappointing experience , seriously overpriced for what is provided This is not a guest house, B&B, Hotel , Hostel..... It is a pub with rooms attached with very little in the way of a any guest experience. There was no staff available after approximately 10–11pm, which became a significant issue when I encountered a serious cleanliness problem on arrival. When I checked in, I found blood on the mattress topper. As it was after the pub closed there was nobody available to report this to, I had no option but to remove the topper overnight and use bath towels to cover the mattress. I reported the issue the following day to the bar man and it was addressed. The room itself was also dusty, and there were pieces of debris from the window left on the windowsill, giving the impression that the room had not been properly cleaned or checked before my arrival. Housekeeping was very poor throughout the stay. The bathroom was cleaned only once during my five-night stay, and the stairs and landings were not vacuumed at any point that was noticeable . The mini-bar was completely empty. As the pub was closed at night, there was therefore no way to obtain even basic refreshments on the premises after hours. Given that there was also no staff available, this added to the feeling that the accommodation was simply a room attached to a pub rather than a properly serviced property The photographs and descriptions used to advertise the breakfast also do not accurately reflect what was actually offered on site, which I found misleading. It was an ala carte menu on a A4 piece of paper. The room itself was far from peaceful. Whenever certain vehicle passed outside, the entire room vibrated. I was also woken at around 6am by bottle collection.

The shower was very good in a very large bathroom, the air conditioning was excellent and the mattress was firm and comfortable. The staff were very helpful

I had an excellent one night stay. Right in the centre of town. A very comfortable. room. Friendly and helpful staff and a superb breakfast. Recommended..

Breakfast was really nice and freshly cooked to order. Central location, everything was within walking distance. The staff were friendly and helpful.

It is an old building, possibly listed, and the windows in our room reflected this but the interior is modern and clean.

The room was clean and tidy..we went for breakfast included and the Full English Breakfast didn't disappoint and set you up for the day.. the Royal Standard is so close to all that Ely has to offer.. and after a day sight seeing the evening meals are the best.. we had the fish and chips amazing.. congratulations to all the staff for making us feel at home

The room was comfortable, but very noisy, because of the proximity to the main road. The bed was very comfortable, but the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The windows were covered in dust, as were the lampshades.

The room wasn't clean The shower and the bedsheets were clean but everything else was dusty. I appreciate that those two elements are probably the most important but it was like they just changed the sheets and cleaned the shower and left everything else. The room definitely hadn't been hoovered or dusted. The remote control was so dirty we didnt even want to touch it. The floor in the bedroom of room 5 is grim - stained, filthy and needs replacing. One of the towels was so thin it tore when we used it. Generally everything except the bed felt really tired and dirty - water marks on all the bathroom surfaces, and bedside tables and generally just felt a bit gross.

The staff who checked us in were nice - when we checked out no one asked about our stay so we didn't mention feedback onsite.

Bed and pillows really comfortable one of the best we've come across. Window blind repeatedly fell down. Tea and coffee provided very poor in quantity and choice. Good breakfast bit pricey. Good location. Would definitely stay again. Our room was a small double but perfectly OK.

The pub decor and vibe is above what you would expect from a pub. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was ample and delicious

It’s is such a shame that with the new fire regulations which came in effect at the beginning of the year has meant that the comfort zones on the first and second floors no longer have seating. This is not a reflection on the pub. It would seem that they had to remove them to comply

The room was lovely, as was the bathroom. The bed was comfortable. Free (council) parking.

The room faced the main road and was noisy from traffic and the pub opposite. Very little noise from the pub downstairs - until 11pm. For some reason, once the pub closed the young lady on duty turned up the music very loud which woke me up. Despite asking for it to be turned down it took several attempts for her to do this This ruined my nights sleep and the overall experience. Access from the Council run car park was awkward with bags, up several steps and then through the pub to more steps. The price was expensive for a noisy room only stay.

In de badkamer zou er een wandrekje mogen voorzien worden om het toiletgerief op te plaatsen.

The staff were really friendly and helpful. We ate dinner and breakfast at the Royal Standard and both meals were delicious and the ingredients really well sourced.

Checkin was easy, room was pretty and comfortable and it's an ideal location. En suite was lovely and clean and everything seemed to work. Would recommend for a night like we did. The breakfast menu was very good and what I had (scrambled egg on sourdough with black pudding) very tasty. Liked the water and the coffee bags in the room.

It was a bit confusing as I thought breakfast was included but perhaps I missed something Also the window in the room is clearly single-glazed - it looks pretty historic so maybe there's some restrictions but it does mean you can hear the road quite clearly.

Nothing to dislike

The breakfast was fantastic on each of the three days that we stayed there. The staff were excellent, really friendly and helpful (one in particular of which unfortunately I cannot remember her name was outstanding- The tall blonde woman who the rugby player)

The rooms (1 and 3) were a little tired and the windows were difficult to open. I think that the room needed a bit of a deep clean to be totally honest.

Decor was very nice throughout the room and landing areas. Large room with separate seating area with good heating. Powerful shower water pressure

Room we had was on the top floor in the eaves so one side of the bed was very difficult to get into due to the roof slope -bed could have easily been positioned better when completed to allow more space to that side. No mirror accessible for hairdryer use and not ideal for makeup. Breakfast was very slow- 20/25mins from ordering and only people there at the time. Disappointing there is no continental option at all only cooked options. Ingredients used were mediocre with the beans, black pudding and toast of poor quality for the price point. Check out time of 10am is also something I have not come across before (or spotted at booking) yet Breakfast is served until 12 so seems extremely early! Have stayed at many properties in Ely and do so frequently and we are very unlikely to return to this one.

Lighting in bedroom quite dim, couldn't read at nighttime

We visited Ely for the Christmas Market and decided to stay. The royal Standard is right in the town with the cathedral & shops just minutes away. We arrived early and the staff said our room was ready so we could check in, the manager carried our bag to our room, which was stylish & comfortable. The staff were very friendly, and super helpful, the food selection is large and good quality. We highly recommend The Royal Standard and will return.

The range of freshly cooked breakfasts is amazing but not much choice if you prefer more of a continental breakfast.

Full of character and ideally situated.

Nothing about the property at all. The only downside to our stay were the waiting staff on our first night at dinner and breakfasts. No cutlery on both occasions and not particularly friendly. Not asked on check out how was our stay. However second dinner with different staff was exemplary.

Staff were amazing. Went all around the town trying to get an espresso martini only to find it where I started. Delicious, by the way. The room was comfortable. Breakfast was yummy. Nothing too much trouble. Even down to me not having my beans touching my eggs.

Location was central. Bathroom had been recently redone and looked good. Bed was comfortable. Staff polite but not especially welcoming or enthusiastic. Breakfast very good.

A bit old and tired. The bedroom window was broken and wouldn’t stay open. There were quite a few cobwebs in the room, especially around the windows. The big pub lantern outside shone through the bedroom window even with the blind down. The window is not double glazed so you can hear most things from the street. TV was a smart tv that hadn’t actually been set up to the network so it wasn’t possible to watch bbc iPlayer etc.

The room we were in at the front of the property was very noisy. The windows were beautiful, original leaded glass but didn’t shut well and every single noise from outside came into the room. The room was also a bit on the small side with very limited wardrobe space. However……we would definitely stay here again but ask for a quieter room.

The breakfast was fabulous, one of the best vegetarian breakfasts I have ever had. The room was spacious and clean.

The team are warm and accommodating, particularly when alerting about possibility of late arrival if flight into Stansted had been delayed.

There is an apparently longstanding issue that booking.com sometimes reverts to quoting a contact telephone number (on the confirmation receipt) that is actually the number of a sister hotel in Ely. This can be disconcerting if phoning on it to talk to the Royal Standard team - just to alert you to the possibility!

Location was fab, staff were really friendly. Room was lovely, and the breakfast was amazing!

The location was about 15min away from the train station on foot and probably 10min or less away from pretty much anything in the city centre. The staff was without exceptiob friendly and helpful, the room was small but very well appointed. It's a lovely old building but despite the age has excellent ammenities. Good showe, sufficient outlets, good air-conditioning, and very good sound-proofing. I could occasionally hear noises from the street but never heard anything from the crowded pub the floor below. The breakfast was pleasant.

The WiFi was a bit slow by my standards. The price was a bit high but that's something of general Britain problem.

Warm welcome, efficient quick check-in and shown to our room. Loved the old world air of the property, including the furniture in our room. Good breakfast included. Good base for exploring the town - easy walking distance to everything.

Ein ganz wunderbares englisches Hotel mit Parkplatz ganz nah und guter Lage um Ely zu Fuß anzusehen. Hübsche Zimmer. Der Pub gegenüber war ab 22 Uhr nachts leise. Tolle Betten und Bäder. Wir sind zum Zweiten Mal zu Gast gewesen.
