Old building with lots of character - Great location for walking into Whitby but avoiding the smaller streets.
Beautiful property location was fantastic - had everything we needed and parking too would highly recommend and stay here again
Location
To noisy
Location is excellent Breakfast was standard
More choices of lager Overpriced for two days stay
The location is fabulous and good to have parking in Whitby
It needs some love! Someone who cares needs to stay here to realise there is no mirror in the en suite bathroom, that rugs, pictures, cushions would be nice to soften the place. It could be wonderful but it’s lacking in care. The floor and mirrors were really dirty when we arrived sadly.
Superb. Great choice. Loved the porridge.
Overall we enjoyed the hotel. The staff were friendly and it is quick and easy to walk into the town
The buffet breakfast table was very poor. No fresh fruit . No choice of rolls, nice bread etc. the cooked breakfast was better.
Lovely building, close to everything, but you feel cut off from outside traffic noise and daytime town hussle and bustle Very friendly and helpful staff, delicious breakfast.
Nothing
The location and parking are without doubt exceptionally convenient. The property is well stocked with facilities and plenty of space.
The cleanliness. It ranged from the multitude of cobwebs, clear lack of hoovering and dust-laden extractor fan in the bathroom. More worrying were the black rubbish bags stuffed behind an external wall and rubbish spilling out onto the floor, leading to flies within the property.
Really spacious, excellent for families or a group of friends. Has everything you need for a holiday home. Great location, just out enough to be quiet at night but a few minutes walk from town centre.
Outside area was not cleaned, full ashtray on table. Lots of full black bags shoved up the side of the building that the seagulls kept ripping open and spreading all over the courtyard. No Outside bin to put any rubbish in.
Nice Building; Court Yard and History of the building
Terrible pokey room and reheated breakfast For £230 per night it was daylight robbery!!
The four-poster bed, the fireplace, the overall atmosphere
My husband and I loved everything about Bagdale The quaintness of it, the history . The staff where wonderful . We would definetely go back it was spectacular .
The parking was tight . Trying to get in and out was difficult .but managed with the help of my husband .
The location is perfect, 3 minutes walk to the town centre
Missing simple comforts like no cushions on the couch and the pillows are well past the best. The postcode given for the location was not helpful for finding the location. I tried to contact customer service but that was no use. My wife asked at a local hotel that turned out to be the owner and was able to give us proper directions. I would definitely recommend sending bookers the what3words location for the entrance to the driveway. It would be far easier to locate.
Very well situated
Location of property is superb, everything you could need, tight parking space on entry to the courtyard but very secure
Perfect location parking a bonus everything you need we were there for our son’s wedding at sneaton castle it was a few minutes drive away
Just need some shower mats I’m disabled and found it a little slippery
The breakfast options are excellent and I can highly recommend the full English.
Nothing, a very enjoyable experience.
Tolles altes Gebäude, ist wirklich ein Erlebnis.
Zimmer zur Straße war laut, da wir aufgrund der Hitze das Fenster offen lassen mussten.
location and cleanliness
Location.
Property did not look anything like photos. Very unclean on arrival. Crumbs and dirt all over floor. Hairs on bedding. Very unclean property. Broken blinds. Dirt, dust and cobwebs all over. Dirty windows. Broken blinds. Very poorly equipped. No hairdryer. 1 toilet roll provided for 3 toilets in property. Bathrooms dirty. Not enough towels provided. Kitchen dirty and poorly equipped. Poor selection of glasses. Outside of building dirty. Constant ringing of buzzer from building next door. Ringing buzzer from 8am onwards constantly. Property uncomfortable and dirty shell. Certainly did not reflect photos at time of booking. Certainly did not reflect good reviews at time of booking. Very poor.
We loved the amazing historical character and its beautiful renovation whilst keeping its original features. So Olde Worlde inside with a pretty entrance and courtyard. The king superior suite was very comfortable with lovely little touches. And breakfast was delicious and beautifully cooked. The staff were all friendly and professional and happy to help with anything. We had the most enjoyable stay and highly recommend.
Sadly we didn’t see any ghosts :-) but maybe next time as we would definitely revisit.
Location and Parking. Breakfast.
Road noise.Air conditioning.
Everything
Nothing to dislike
Beautiful original building
Tv could be updated. Room 3 by ladies toilets
Everything lovely room lovely staff and breakfast
The restaurant not being open was celebrating our anniversary ended up having to book elsewhere
Stayed in Room 2 which is a suite with a four poster bed, and a Chesterfield settee and chair. It overlooked the front, side and back of the hotel. The hotel is full of history dating back 500 years. An amazing fireplace in our suite with Delft tiles. Didn't have any meals apart from the included excellent breakfast. Has parking too. Great location. Thoroughly recommend and will return.
Would have preferred just a shower with removable shower head.
Position of hotel to town centre
Stay was really good. Hotel quirky. Staff welcoming and friendly, room comfortable and clean.Breakfast was filling and plenty of choice
All good
Location and lay out
No signage to indicate where exactly it was
It’s a wonderful and dreamy hotel. So full of character and a warmth that envelops you immediately. The rooms are beautiful. The service so friendly. The location - a two minute walk to the centre of Whitby.
You’re kidding me, there’s nothing wrong here.
Downstairs comfortable.
The whole place needs a deep clean. Our room was absolutely disgusting .They need to sack or retrain the cleaning staff.
Friendly staff , delicious food, comfortable and clean excellent location.
Extremely clean and comfortable property. The location was great for getting straight into the heart of Whitby. I have mobility issues and was looking for somewhere that didn't entail walking up and down hills to access the delights of Whitby. Although it wasn't advertised as fully accesible because the bedrooms are on the first floor, it was great for someone who can manage stairs (if not easily) but needs easy access into the property and the surrounding area. It was quiet and private with a handy outdoor seating area. The two bathrooms and downstairs toilet in the utility room were really useful. Would definitely book again at the right price. Managed to park two small cars at a squeeze, which was a godsend for Whitby.
Therecwas a little bit of mystery aboutvthe parking, until we actually arrived and saw it for ourselves. However can understand this as it is available depending on the size of vehicle. Would be better to make this clearer in advance.
Location was excellent . breakfast was good
There was no evening meals on a Monday and Tuesday
Lovely old building with oak panelling. Great room with loads of room. Lovely bar area. Breakfast great
Kippers available for breakfast! Hard to find these days.
We stayed at the cottage as a group of 5, and found it to have plenty of space. Cosy accommodation, that was fully equipped with kitchen wares cutlery, crockery, cups and glasses(washing up liquid, teatowel, and 3 dishwasher tabs), even salt and pepper! The complimentary tea, coffee and sugar was a nice touch. The bedrooms are a good size, and the location of the cottage, in terms of amenities, is fantastic! Literally a stones throw from everything u need. Little suggestions: a mirror in the en suite. (There is a shaving socket) Hook or towel rail/ shelf in en suite, as nowhere to hang. Some kind of clothes storage in the double
*Locating the cottage was difficult, even using the satnav. Ended up asking reception at the hotel nearby, for directions. Apparently a frequent occurance. *Accessing the private parking is quite tight, especially with a larger car. Where the majority of the cottage was clean, there were a few areas that need attention: *the extraction fans in the bathrooms are absolutely caked in dust. So thick, it couldn't be blown off! The same with the radiators. We actually rescued the window keys, from the radiator grill in the en suite, also dusty. Between 3 bedrooms, we found a protein bar wrapper, 2 chocolate balls, several sanitary product wrappers. This was only noticed, as I dropped an earring back, and on trying to locate mine, we found someone else's, in the middle of the carpet, that surely would've being hoovered up?!. *Not long after we had checked in, we were already recieving emails counting down our check out. Reminding about strict check out times. Kinda pee'd on things a little.
Lovely old building with loads of Character, location is perfect
Full of character charm, excellent room, comfortable bed, friendly professional staff, good bar selection and really good breakfast
Nothing
We've stay a few times now and love it....location is the best, parking space is great. We hope to come back.
Leather seats in front room very difficult to get out of.
I had one of the nicest breakfasts I have ever had anywhere, it was superb. The historic hotel was/is beautiful and it made for a stunning location. The location of it to the town centre is ideal and very well situated for a convenient stroll in to shops/pubs etc.
Only a small thing, the T.V. offered limited channel viewing and as one who enjoys watching the news last thing at night I did not watch it as the channel option was not to my taste. This however in no way spoilt my pleasure of staying in such a splendid room and I would certainly stay in that room again in future.
every thing was absolutely amazing from first walking into the reception. The lady at reception was extremely helpful and friendly the room was stunning however we felt it could benefit from a fridge as we stayed for 3 nights and we bought a bottle of wine which we couldn't keep chilled. The bar man Christian was absolutely amazing and a credit to the hotel, he made the couple of night we spent in the bar a very enjoyable experience and we would like you to pass on our comments to him.
The prices at the bar are very high and we would suggest you consider installing a draft soft drinks machine rather than paying 3 pound plus per bottle. We feel that this would encourage more guests to drink in the bar as we were the only 2 people in the bar each night we used it, which is a shame as Christian would certainly bring more paying guests in due to his personality.
The area
The showers were rubbish
All of it
Nothing
Everything! We love visiting Bagdale Hall.
Nothing
Fantastic place/staff and up grade for free ,excellent staff, excellent location, all in all a very very good hotel to say ,nothing was to much trouble, would recommend to everyone Excellent
Nothing every thing was excellent
The history and character the house has
The Matress was uncomfortable and I struggled sleeping a little
Lovely cottage bonus of downstairs toilet/ laundry room and private parking doggie loved wood burner
Nothing
Love the location and on site parking
The problems we experienced have been reported many times by other reviewers over the last 2 years: No property signage made finding it a stressful chore Cobwebs aplenty inside Lots of marks on the walls Terrible vacuuming job throughout No wardrobe in one of the bedrooms No mirror in the en-suite No logs for log burner Poor WiFi Zero character, not even some local prints or pictures Please remedy these problems so that we could stay here again.
we were in room 2 it was beautiful and breakfast was ten out of ten we will be back soon thankyou
Breakfast was good.
The bed was too high to get on. Being under 5 foot I had to really jump to get on and when I had to use the toilet in the night it was dangerous. I walk with a stick so had to be very careful. The bed creaked every time you moved. The toilet when you flushed make a terrible noise so had to be careful in the night if you flushed the chain.
Central location. The log burner made it cosy.the open plan room is nice. Modern furnishings.
The pots are a little old and well worn. The wifi doesn’t work at all. The password doesn’t work. It is impossible to stream films on the tv. There is no clothes storage in the second double bedroom. We stayed the day after Boxing Day and there were no decorations, despite us asking and not getting a response.
Location
Needs some thorough cleaning
L’emplacement, à 500 mètres des commerces restaurants etc.. Parking privé gratuit derrière l’hôtel. Magnifique bâtisse de 1516.
location perfect lovely house
a spare key would be handy, i realise some people have forgotten to leave spare key when departing maybe charge deposit and collect from Bagdale Hall hotel
Location. Parking
Could do with a little tlc. The shower in ensuite kept clogging up
Location was excellent, parking space was a bonus. Comfortable beds. Lovely and warm. Well equipped
If I'm being really picky, some of the blinds need repairing/replacing
Very well located , comfortable and secure private parking off street . Omfortable rooms clean linen etc . Quite basic but good economic stay.
Staff were really friendly and helpful and the hotel is old and full of character
Food was fantastic. Location was good. Staff very friendly and accomodating
Definitely overpriced for quality of room. Needs a refurb. No plug to plug hair dryer in front of dressing table. Dressing table chair needs reupholstering as sunk in middle. Mattress was quite hard.Obviously an old building but could do with a lift as top floor rooms very difficult to carry luggage up to. Tea,coffee, water and biscuits were a welcome touch.and the gift of toiletries.
Fantastic historical building and really friendly staff, who couldn't do enough for us. The room was great with original features, including slopping floors in our room. There was a raging storm the night we were there so we chose to eat in the resteraunt. The food was second to none. Sadly, we only had one night available to stay on this occasion as we had to move on.
Nothing
Location was excellent well placed for shops pubs sightseeing and restaurants. The staff in Bagdale Hall very friendly and the food was super
The cottage was basic no character. No hanging space in second bedroom and not enough drawers to accommodate everything for 5days. Lived out of suitcases
Loved the oldie worlds style .
Everything was so lovely .
The staff were very helpful and friendly.
Being disabled things like the stairs were hard work. They were helpful regarding the storing of my rented mobility scooter.
It's a beautiful old building but with really comfortable facilities in a very convenient location The staff were lovely and an excellent breakfast
It could do with a lift, but the exercise i suppose does you good
Great communication from the company that run this cottage. Lovely accommodation, in the center of Whitby, with a parking space is unheard of!! Spacious house, has everything you need, comfortable beds, nice kitchen / dining area. Has everything you would need for a short break to Whitby. Easy smooth access to the property on the day, I felt safe here with my twins. Thank you for a lovely stay.
If I had to add anything - perhaps some bins in the bathrooms and a toilet roll holder of some sort might be useful. Other than that, this property was wonderful.
Close to town centre and has parking
Outside needed a bit of a weed and next door has a loud telephone ring that goes off from 8.30 so no sleeps in.
Location was very good with secure parking. Accommodation was spacious and well equipped apart from comment below re bedrooms.
Very noisy from premises next door. Lack of cupboard space and hooks upstairs. Courtyard could have been swept and dirty towel removed!
It was a nice experience to stay in an old building like this, the room was very clean and comfortable we slept soundly no ghosts bothered us! Breakfast was nice and staff friendly.
We have no complaints.
The historic ambience. Four poster bed.
Not keen on leather suites. Small tv and hot weather would prefer a small fridge,
The location was really good
There is so much wrong with this place, dirty, needs some real tlc, fans need cleaning, shower was dirty, fire equipment has not been serviced last serviced 2021. The list was very long. Was a real shame
Comfortable and spacious, great location
Traditional and quaint

What guests love
Areas to consider
Cleanliness
7.8/10Multiple reports of unclean arrival: crumbs, hairs on bedding, dirty windows, cobwebs and an unclean outside area with rubbish and full ashtrays — cleanliness is noticeably below otherwise high standards.
Service
10/10Staff repeatedly described as wonderful, friendly and professional and helpful; one minor report of unhelpful customer service regarding directions but overall service is a standout positive.
Location
10/10Consistently praised as superb and minutes from the town centre; a few guests noted difficulty finding the exact driveway entrance and some road noise, but overall location is excellent.
Room Quality
8.4/10Mixed room feedback — some love the historic features and four-poster beds, others report pokey rooms, old pillows, broken blinds and road noise; generally comfortable but inconsistent.
Amenities
8.7/10Good courtyard and parking security noted, and breakfast service strong, but several guests reported missing items (hairdryer, shower mats, cushions), limited towels and kitchen equipment shortcomings.
Value for Money
8.7/10Mostly positive stays but at least one guest felt the price was poor value ('daylight robbery' at quoted rate); overall value is slightly below the hotel's strong positives.
Food and Beverage
10/10Breakfast widely praised (excellent options and highly recommended full English); isolated complaint about reheated breakfast, but F&B is generally excellent.
Overall Experience
10/10Majority of reviews describe a thoroughly enjoyable, charming and characterful stay with many guests saying they'd return; a minority had a very poor experience largely due to cleanliness or room issues.
