Everything it was amazing 👏
Too many stairs
Very good.
Our bedroom was a bit small and window was damaged and difficult to close because of decaying frame.
Breakfast was fine.
The place is very dark and tired. Room 2 is small with a very narrow corridor to the bathroom. It all needs some TLC.
Amazing staff...great location and great room and very good food 👌
I liked the position. Very central. I liked our room except for the street noise. I liked the staff. I liked the bed. Amazing. I liked the decor
I Did not like the noise from the street. I did not like the lack of WiFi or 4g working in our room. I did not like the loud music at breakfast.
The thing people need to realise is this is a building that is over 200 years old. There are no lifts, yes there are flights of stairs you will need to climb and no there is no air conditioning. What there is, is a boat load of character and charm. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The breakfast is great value and very tasty. The bar is well stocked. And it's in an incredible location!

Location and ambience , so close to The Minster, Art Gallery and the walls
Nothing really
Location good. Staff very friendly and helpful . Very clean . Excellent breakfast
Room being at the front of hotel. Very noisy all through the night with rowdy people wandering outside . We had very poor nights sleep . We would stay again, but would request a room at the back of the hotel
Breakfast and location
Bed was awful, no sleep at all. Bed needs replacing
Centre In York room was clean bar staff great Restaurant staff great
No lift and we were on the top floor Room was very dark
Loved the location and the view from the room
Our room was at the very top of the building and, although I can't fault anything about it, all the stairs were extremely challenging! There was nothing to make us aware of this when we booked. The stairs could definitely be unmanageable for some less able people.
The location
The rooms are very warm and there is a lot of external noise
I thought it was very uncomfortable because its to small the rooms, very dark and dismissal very hot in the room .
Rooms to small.
Really lovely old pub/rooms with real character - just next to the walls. Breakfast amazing - service and quality as good as you could get.
Monday morning at 7:00am barrels delivered - you will wake up !! We had room 2 at the front but spoke to room 9 at the top above us and other rooms adjacent and all agreed rooms way too hot. The outside day temp at 21-23 - but rooms were like a sauna still at night and 1*10" fan that doesn't rotate not enough with open window to give room a temp that you could have a decent night's sleep through. The room we loved - but needs a large rotating fan in the summer at least. Would we stay again - yes - but only in off season with lower temp in the room!!!
Location
The property felt dated, we stayed in room 4 and the shower was awful and you couldn't change it, just put a new shower head on that works !!! There wasn't a wall that didn't have paint chips in it, it just all felt a bit tired and I don't think it was the cheapest, for the price I paid I expected alot better. I wouldn't recommend my friends to stay here. When we checked out I would have expected somebody to ask us how our stay was, was everything ok for you? Nothing of the sort, took my key card, said 'cool' and that was that, very poor!!!!!!
Lovely room, well located and great breakfast.
Room looked onto large beer garden and with it being a nice day it was very noisy and didn’t feel very private (not an issue after 10:30pm though). If you want a quiet room during day and weather looks good maybe better asking for a room on the top floor or the other side of the building
Location, decor, staff
The room on the top floor was warm but there was a fan.
Cosy, quaint and adorable. Love the fat badger - my 3rd visit and the staff was great. Food was excellent!
Rooms could be a bit warm (thankful for the fan). Wish some of the windows could open more. Also, wish smoking wasn’t allowed in the secret garden.
The property was in a great location and the hotel was lovely.
At 4am it sounded like there was a skip filled with glass emptied into a truck and then at 6.45am a truck filled with steel kegs were being offloaded into the premises and were just being thrown onto the pavement and again the noise was insanely loud. Other than that the hotel is lovely.
A good location for the centre of York and close to the minster.
The room was very small with nowhere to put bags or even the cushions from the bed and it was difficult to walk around it without banging your legs! The bathroom was dingy and the paint was peeling from the ceiling. The advertised car park discount was not available, which I only found out about a couple of days before, so that was another £25.
We liked the location of the property. But it is very dated and the rooms could do with modernising. The curtain pole for the wardrobe was broken. I think £145.80 for one night was way too much
The decor, the out dated rooms and the price for one night.
Fabulous location Beautiful room with views of Bootham bar from our window ( gatehouse of city walls ) Stunning furnishings and decor in room. Lovely staff especially the lady we met upon arrival kindly let us leave our bags upon early arrival and after departure till 5pm. Secret garden was incredible delighted by view of The Minster from our table and just whole vibe of garden. Drinks average price considering stunning location.
Nothing
Amazing place full of character right in the centre of York. There was a brilliant secret beer garden. We loved the old building with its creeky stairs and did not mind the mystery of the moving perfume bottle. The bed was super comfortable. The breakfast was marvellous. The lady in charge was really friendly and welcoming, going out of her way to make us feel at home. We would definitely love to return.
You have to expect noise from the street below, which is not the fault of the property. The bathroom was a bit wiffy as possibly the floor around the toilet needs a steam clean.
Great location. Staff friendly and helpful; good service. Food in restaurant was both tasty and good value, breakfast was delicious.
Email received after booking informing us they do not have travel passes, as stated on your website - this then adds £20-£25 per day onto the cost!! Unable to contact hotel. Could have option to stay elsewhere if known this. The room was on top floor up six flights of stairs - no mention of this in Booking.com description. This was a genuine issue for us due to health - would definitely not have booked this hotel if known this information. The room was stifling hot despite windows open constantly throughout our stay. Lights in beer garden stay on all night.
Quirky , centrally located , great beer garden really hospitable staff
The room was up a steep set of stairs lovely but better suited to younger people
Location. Good music. Good food. Friendly staff. Very comfortable bed. Good amenities in the room. Great welcome and efficient admin. Room was ready when we arrived ( earlier than expected) Excellent breakfast. Easy checkout.
Decor was dark and paintwork was chipped. Room on the small side so ok for one night. Bathroom had a damp smell.
It was very clean and staff were very friendly. Very central position
I did not like walking up 56 stairs to get to my attic bedroom. The room was very small and very little storage space. A very small hanging space taken up with Ironing board iron and fan. Bed side lamps not bright enough to read with. There was drink making stuff but had to ask for more coffee.
Great location. Warm friendly atmosphere. Good food and drink menu. Very helpful staff. We weee able to check in quite early as well.
Very steep stairs but help was offered.
Have literally just left. Firstly, a maze of corridors told to wait by reception. So we waited a couple of minutes. Told we could sit in the garden up the stairs. Said I was Coeliac/Gluten Free, said a menu would be brought up for me. So proceeded to garden, very steep staps, and some of the tiles are loose below railings. Sat down and waited. Then I saw a sign saying, "Please scan bar code and order." So, I thought I would go on and try to order, but low and behold, if you have an allergy, you have to speak to someone. Tried a few times to get the attention of the young girl up there. But failed. So it was either get louder or leaving. After a long tourist day, we decided to leave. So I won't be going back there, at least not for food.
Location
Rooms are clean , however, on the small side and need air conditioning
Excellent location within easy walking distance from the station.. Lovely furnishings too in the bedroom and spacious shower.
No air con but fan was provided. Very steep steps up to the bedroom ( attic room).
Location is good
Got a room with a window directly facing the terrace where people were having drinks. It was midsummer hot and couldnt open the window, not even the curtains. Only stayed one night so it was an alright place to just sleep, but honestly for the same purpose I couldve found a less expensive place. It is also a pub with rooms in the upper floor, and although it wasnt loud, the kitchen smells were quite strong.
The staff were lovely and friendly. The food was very good, but a little pricey. Would still go back.
Location and age, style of pub
Need a heads up to reserve meals to eat there. Restaurant looked fab! Also a heads up that there is no luggage storage at the York location which isn't stated on website.
Everything
Nothing
Location Quaintness of the place
Very hot room on the top floor with only a tiny fan to cool down the room Very expensive drinks in the Secret Garden; somewhat user un-friendly QR Code-based ordering system
Very central to most things and good staff
The rooms were clean with furnishings suitable for the style of the hotel but the stairs and hallway really could do with a good clean.
The staff were warm, friendly and helpful. The location was excellent. Steps from the church and walls of the city. Great restaurant and bar with in hotel. Room large, quiet and comfortable
We had a two night stay in May. The hotel is in a very good position within the city walls near the minster, however all was not well. We paid a lot of money for a small tired room three stories up. The main issue though was the fact that we had a gift voucher to contribute towards the tariff, we were suddenly left with very restricted dates to book by virtue of using a voucher - as a result we had to pay "top-dollar" on voucher available dates. The company showed no empathy when we complained in writing, defending "dynamic pricing". We know other customers paid far less than us the same week. This location did not provide value for money by any stretch of the imagination.
I booked this place because I was going to a concert in York Minster and it is only 3 minutes walk away. The room was nice. It had everything I needed except a decent shower. It’s disappointing because the water in the basin tap was hot and good pressure but the shower was through a cheap little machine on the wall and it was terrible, pressure bad and temperature variable while showering. Top floor room. The staff were great. Friendly, helpful and efficient and it was a very busy Saturday in the pub. I didn’t eat there or see the garden but it seems very popular.

I loved everything about the room and location.
Great location friendly staff amazing breakfast
Staff were friendly, short stay
No tables left outside should as least be a small area for guess who are staying in hotel,, dirty dishes were left at bottom for stairs for over 6 hours, had to take luggage to another pub as check was 11 but our train was not till 2.40,,, room was clean but dated with too many pillows, windows were dirty inside and out. For price of room could of been a better experience,, felt as if staff were running round over worked
Great location. Quirky old building. Nice room, clean and inviting with a view of the 'secret garden' 👌🏻 Good shower as long as you're not tall or 'wide'. Comfy bed.
Bar shuts too early, no extra time for residents. Loaded fries were very hard and difficult to eat, but the burger was lovely. Room was very warm and the hot water practically boiling. Would benefit from an Air-con unit and a mixer tap.
We visited 26th june at 7pm and We were shown to our table by a lovely young girl. The food was perfect. Everyone who served us was brilliant. This is my first ever night in york and this has been a great first impression.
Honestly, the best soup I've ever had! Potato Leek soup was out of this world. Great bar and very nice atmosphere.
The food was ok, but that was it really.
The lady who served breakfast hovered and interrupted us during breakfast. No happy welcome or instructions. No one asked if we had any allergies and my dinner was awful. Underfloor heating on in hot heat.
The location was perfect. The staff were so friendly & the room was clean, spacious & very comfortable. The only thing I would say is that if your a light sleeper the room i was in probably wouldn't be the one for you as you could here the traffic but that comes from being so close to the road. But other than that it is a lovely place to stay and I will definitely stay there again.
I liked everything about my stay there. I will definitely stay there again
Staff were fabulous. Central location. Secret garden lovely for evening drinks. Food was tasty and well presented. Room (standard double ) was small but creatively furnished
Bed was a bit shaky and noisy. And anytime people upstairs moved, the light fitting rattled!
Staff Room decor Clean Comfortable beds

Great food, great staff, great atmosphere!
Wonderfully helpful and welcoming from start to finish. Great staff, it was busy, but we weren’t rushed, just welcomed! The food was lovely, the veg was cooked to perfection 😁 Highly recommend
Incredible location within the city walls which can be viewed from our garden facing bedroom. There are several old pubs, restaurants and cafes within metres. The cathedral is a mere short stroll leading to all the interesting streets in this compact city. A lovely characteristic and historical place to stay. Wonderful Yorkshire welcome from customer service led staff. Enjoyed a hearty and scrumptious dinner and lunch on an overnight stay. One night here is far too short.
There are stairs so be careful if you are less mobile. However we loved being high up despite the climb with our heavy bags. You are compensated with a lovely garden and old city wall view.
Very cute pub, well appointed decor and a great atmosphere. The menu adds food looks amazing but we only had a drink this time around. Service was excellent too.
Love everything about the Fat Badger! I have stayed here before and love the old style building. It’s also right in the center and easy to get to. The lovely Debbie looked after us during our stay and we had such a laugh! I will be booking again on my next visit to York.
Nothing
The hotel room food staff are amazing and so so friendly...
Nothing to dislike
Excellent breakfast
Property was tired, desperately in need of a refresh, room was very small and not well laid out, warm and stuffy, even though a fan was provided, and the common areas didn't seem that fresh.
Perfect location.
Great location, lovely building, attentive staff, beer garden, good bar
The room was stiflingly hot. It was a warm day, however the room was unbearable. Our bedroom at home reaches high 20s in the peak of summer but this room was even hotter than that. Uncomfortable to be in, impossible to sleep in. There was a fan which was there to make noise, it moved no air. My chilled bottle of water was at skin temperature in the morning. If you want to stay here in summer ask for a room on a lower floor as the heat rose noticeably when climbing the stairs. Also the lighting in our room was somewhat lacking.
Nice garden area although umbrellas full of bird poo easily cleaned off with a jet was put me off eating here god knows what kitchen like if can't see cleaning these as Important made me feel sick thinking about it
Servizio ottimo.
Location
Picture misrepresented hotel , this is basically a pub with a few rooms above the pub, anyone with any mobility issues or are aging , could not use this hotel. Had to climb and haul luggage 3 flights of tight stares. Staff was not helpful when ordering drinks/food in garden lounge ,asked staff if they served this area, they replied that they did not. So I climbed 2 sets of stairs to get a drink and order food. Only to find out latter they in deed do service the area I asked about!
Beautiful location steps from the Uork Minster and Bootham Bar. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The breakfast and dinner were delicious.
The rooms were a little tight due to historic nature of the building, but everything was pretty and very clean.
Location is great

Great Pub & hotel rooms. Very clean & bed was comfortable the room was well decorated. However I stayed in room 10 and the generator outside made an enormous racket. Would stay again but not in room 10!

location was excellent, secret garden was lovely
Sunday roast was delicious.
Very noisy yearly in the morning
Central location,amazing beer garden,lovely food
Loved it all
Had a lovely attic room which felt very private. Also lovely decor. Comfy bed.
Although i loved the room the stairs up and down were difficult being very narrow and steep. The temp gauge (to raise or lower the temp) fell off the radiator.
The location was excellent, right up against Bootham Gate and an easy stroll to the cathedral. Room was charming, if a little small for two people. Staff was friendly and helpful. We had lunch in the garden and it was very nice.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was great, location was perfect, staff where helpful
Bed was uncomfortable and decoration needed some attention throughout the hotel
I am sadly sat in the bar on my own enjoying a drink, there is a very loud chap at the bar effing and jeffing and actually very demeaning to the bar people. It seems he knows them, in fact I confirmed that he does work here but “not on shift” it’s very uncomfortable for all around to have to listen to this. Maybe have a word re not being such a male chauvinist and actually to keep his volume down, in fact stop being such a ….. head
We booked Fat Badger after friends had stayed and recommended it. We booked the Superior room and were given Room 9 at the top overlooking the garden. Just a 10 minute walk to the station, we arrived early and the staff were so friendly and took our luggage to our room and also brought it down again when we left. Having booked for our Anniversary and this mentioned on our booking it was a tad disappointing that there wasnt a little touch to recognise this. We had breakfast each morning at Fat Badger and also booked a dinner too on our first night and ordered drinks in the Secret Garden all of which were superb and we couldn't have been looked after any better. Room serviced to perfection and everyone we encountered was so friendly My only negative is that the room is a bit dark and could do with a central light or another lamp, and perhaps chocolates instead of the sweets would be more to our taste. Ideally located for all the sights. We had a lovely stay and beautiful weather too
Location proximity to the theatre Quirkiness
No view due to all the scaffolding outside.
Lovely bar, a welcoming atmosphere, the staff were kind and the food was really good.
I loved my birthday burger here. We ate in the snug and loved the pub. Service was quick despite it being really busy. Defo recommend.
Beds and pillows were really comfortable and breakfast was lovely.
I couldnt get tv to come on at night but it wasnt an issue as i was checking out following morning anyway.
The location was very central and the hotel was super cozy, I really liked it!
Nice old pub with rooms. Our room quite small and dark, bathroom cramped. Room painted very dark and no decent reading lights. Bed small but comfortable, place seemed to be staffed entirely by teenagers. Woken at 5 by the bin men then at 7 by a beer delivery. Breakfast ok, my wife had eggs benedict and the eggs were solid. When asked if everything was ok she pointed this out and the response was 'Oh sorry.'
Staff lovely, room so comfortable and exceptionally clean, breakfast was beautiful
Nothing
Restaurant in house, food quality and variety, bar in house, outdoor garden with table service, walking distance to most attractions,
Finding it was difficult, there is no parking and the voucher for paid parking was withdrawn. All rooms were accessed by stairs (lots) but staff were very helpful with luggage.
Nice location & nice outside seating area
Was a bit tatty in places I repaired holes in the stairway walls, shower was a bit small
It was our 10th Wedding Anniversary and we got upgraded in our room with a Four Poster Bed, superb. All the staff were lovely, very helpful.
The tv didnt work fully, the sound was on but no picture and my husband was looking forward to watching the boxing when we got back but couldn't watch it as only sound. We did report it but when we got back it still wasn't working. The only other thing the toilet seat completely fell off but my husband managed to get it back on. Minors things though other that that great stay.
We only ate here, booked our table first and glad we did, was a busy place. Food was amazing, I had sunday roast, was perfect.
Very comfy beds Excellent location. Lovely beer garden to the rear.
Quite noisy, and rooms could do with a little TLC
Location was brilliant, decor gorgeous, room comfortable, beautiful and unique, staff lovely, food delicious

Quirky near a tower and close to Minster
The decor was interesting artwork quirky
The location was amazing, the room was beautifully decorated and the staff were lovely.

While staying at the Clementine Hitel York we went to the Fat Badger restaurant so amazing , so friendly and food is amazing , and if you stay at the Clementine Hotel you get £10 off the bill at the Fat Badger .
