Historical, quirky and in a perfect spot. Staff were friendly and breakfast was cooked to order and delicious.
We were there in the hot spell (35 degrees C) and we were in the top room. Boiling. No air con (obviously - historical building), no fans. We boiled. Drains smelled bad too.
Location.
Lighting in room was a bit too dark .
The bed was comfy and the location was amazing
That there was a light outside the window, that was on all night l, the loud banging every 5 minutes, doors slamming and a tiny bathroom, with odd placement of mirrors that made them uselss
Nothing

Location and the old feel were amazing! Comfy bed and the garden seating at the restaurant are worth stopping in for even if you do not stay.
Slippery shower with uneven floors. To be expected in an old building.
The room was comfortable with lots of character. My daughter thought it the best hotel room ever.
It was all good except for being near the outside drinking area so was noisy until people left.
Lovely
Old and nice
It’s location
The chaotic reception, the steep and poorly lit stairs, the strange smell in my room, 7, for the first night - drains? - and the price - far too high for the overall quality of the experience. £200 a night would have been too much.
The central location was perfect. The history of the building was a supprise as we just thought it was a quirky name not his actual birthplace.
The room was great just a shame its sandwiched between 2 beer gardens. Quiet after the pub has closed but thankfully it was raining the night we stayed so it wasnt too busy.
Good location in the city centre, check in was straightforward. The room we were in was newly renovated, the breakfast selection was good and we enjoyed a full English included in our stay.
Although the room was newly renovated, there were some issues; the blinds broke during the night, as there is no 24 hour reception, we could not report this until the morning which meant we had to sleep with the blinds open (there were no curtains). The walk in shower flooded into our bedroom which ruined some of our property, The toilet seat was also not properly fixed so fell off multiple times during our stay. We reported this to the staff upon check out. The lady who checked us in explained that there may be some teething problems as this is a newly renovated room, however, the staff member we explained these problems to gave no apology and barely even acknowledged our complaints. Quite disappointed as the room was decorated beautifully but seems to function quite poorly.
Great location for a pedestrian arriving and to see the city. Not so good if you arrive by car
Rather rickety staircase and no elevator. Would be tough if you had big luggage
Location great in city, room - large comfortable and lovely shower.
Location
Over priced for its standards
Location excellent- brilliant outdoor courtyards
Great location but parking is not close. Recommended parking is expensive but cheaper options exist if you're prepared to walk a bit further
Very central and clean
Small room but we knew that
i really didn't like the room. it was very small, dark and far too hot with no airflow didn't sleep at all that night.
the staff were very unprofessional talking to me as if i was there mate and been a bit checky!
Location was really good and good history to the building.
It was very noisy, there was hoovering at midnight and constant noise. The room was large but the bathroom was very small and not clean. Not good value for money we paid £274 for 1 night, when we got to hotel i looked and it was a different website for £109.
Fantastic breakfast
Nothing
Lovely, clean and interesting property with nice staff and nice rooms.
Nothing
Location and the room was great with beautiful view
The staff especially the man doing breakfast. He was miserable unfriendly and made us feel unwelcome
Both the bedroom and bathroom were very nice - cosy decor and a very comfortable night's sleep. Everything was clean and well kept. A good selection of hot drinks in the room, including pleasant-tasting ground coffee bags. We didn't have breakfast, but we dined in the restaurant from the Sunday Roast menu (vegetarian pie), which was delicious. The best vegetarian dinner we've had in a long time! The staff were all very friendly and professional.
Quirky and comfortable.
Difficult to move around if your tall and broad, narrow access and very low ceilings.
Everything we stayed in room 20, absolutely breathtaking
Nothing everything was perfect
Great central location with a wonderful view of the minster.
Our room was quite noisy at the front early in the morning with the deliveries and door opening and closing. However we had a great view so not a major issue.
Central
Very dated and run down !!!! Didn’t feel clean any where !! Toilets not nice etc checking process is very unpleasant and unprofessional
The new rooms are lovely, high quality finish, comfortable. Good breakfast.
The inn needs a good deep clean, it was quite dirty. The outside space needs also needs sweeping and cleaning. The basics are good but it feels like there is no one in charge taking care of the detail. Some of the staff were borderline rude. The new rooms had no hotel information so we didn’t know when breakfast was. A lighter weight duvet would be good for summer, the room was very warm and a light by the mirror to help putting make up on would be useful.
Location was decent, room was designed nicely and staff were ok
Room was not fit for purpose, lack of maintenance with multiple issues in the room which led to a terrible stay.
Location is great
The quilt and pillow cases were damp, and did not dry whatsoever during our stay. We had to sleep on a towel. This is likely the room itself being damp. The room is up a metal staircase which was flooded and muddy, felt like going up a fire escape. Cleanliness wasn’t great with dust around carpet edges and skirting, and the decor whist very tasteful for the period was tired and needed to be repainted. Black mould in the bathroom backs up the theory of damp. On check-in, staff were not welcoming and all seemed annoyed we were in the corridor (this is where the “reception” is.)

Good location
Run down in places, could have been cleaner - I know the vibe is old/vintage but shouldn’t lack cleanliness The new rooms were much cheaper and were stunning
The location was good
It was next to a building site. They started work at 7am really noisy. The windows wouldn’t stay open so we had to use a glass to wedge them open so we could let some air into the room. It was also very dark with not mush lighting. They took £30 out of my account because they accused us of stealing 2glasses. The glasses were holding the windows open so if the cleaners had done there job properly they would have seen them holding the windows up.
Location was right outside Yorkminster.
The room was lovely clean and comfortable
The only negative thing was it didn't have coasters for the hot drinks was worried about damaging the furniture
While I didn’t ra here I did have a drink. As part of history this is a place to visit as Guy Fawkes is the person linked to the gun powder plot and this is an interesting place if only for this
Rooms were great. Location was awesome.
Some of the staff were abrupt which spoiled an otherwise great trip.
Quirky rooms, great location. Check in was very professional and friendly. Busy bar, insufficient bar staff. Bar staff were a little bit brash which was such a shame. Possibly due to the high volume of customers. Four poster rooms and suites were great. Comfy beds, great linen and pillows. White Company toiletries. 😃
The food was lovely but the staff need to be more approachable. There were 4 staff stood on the bar area, only 1 was serving noone acknowledged us or said they'd be with us soon they just ignored us. The waiting staff in general need to know they work in hospitality and that a smile goes a long way, they all looked miserable.
Location.
Small dark room, with limited space, not good value for room rate charged.
Lovely helpful staff. Very comfortable bed with fabulous pillows. Nice tea tray. The evening meal and breakfast were excellent. Service in the restaurant for dinner and at breakfast was exceptional.
We thought the hotel could do with a bit of TLC and updating. The dark colours obviously create the period ambience needed for this historic building but there were a number of areas that were damaged and chipped which made it look a bit shabby. The beer garden is a great asset but again, it needs a smarten up. We particularly found the the lighting on thd stairs to be unhelpful to us. I am partially sighted and my husband has Parkinson's so the stairs were a bit of a challenge. Perhaps not the best choice of hotel for 2 people with disabilities.
The location
Very tired looking
The place was very quirky creaky floor boards looked like a lot of history in the building
There was a few decor issues that a lick of paint would have easily solved in the room we stayed in
Lovely quirky room with a roll top bath to give it that extra luxury. Great room n lovely helpful staff
Very beautiful room, great location, I can only imagine how good the view would be if there wasn't scaffolding up on the church across (not hotels fault)
The pictures! They were honestly a bit creepy.
Close to everything..
Needs some TLC.. it's an old building and it's meant to look that way but it looks dated and run down in the bedrooms..
The standard of the rooms was well below the price charged, cracked windows, rusted radiator, leaking shower head, flooring uneven as we entered the room, I’m my opinion there has been a lack of investment in a wonderful building
Location
Noise, no fridge in room.
Excellent location so close to the mk inter you could almost touch it. Beautiful garden are
Felt rushed at breakfast. But this may have been due to bad choice for booking time. I thought breakfast was average but really these were minor problems. I feel the room was too dark for my eyes. But I understand there were trying to set a scene from the past. Overall I was happy
Super clean, nice staff. Excellent breakfast, perfect location.
Superb location, cosy double room , super clean shower , delicious breakfast
Tv difficult to watch because it was a cosy room ! Toilet water kept rising after each flush !
Breakfast was lovely, room was stunning and location perfect
Beautiful room, excellent location and great food.
Great location in York perfect for getting where you want to go and staff were friendly
Bed was extremely squeaky causing noise with any movement
We had a fantastic stay! The location was perfect for exploring the area, with the main attractions easily within reach. The staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and always happy to help, which made us feel right at home. The beds were exceptionally comfortable — always a big plus after a long day of sightseeing! The property itself was beautiful and full of character, with a historic and charming atmosphere that made the stay feel like part of the experience rather than just a place to sleep. We also really appreciated the attention to detail and the overall warm atmosphere of the property. Everything felt authentic, well cared for, and inviting. A wonderful place to stay, and somewhere we would happily return to!
It was a busy Saturday night and we sat in the walled garden which is lovely. We ordered from the QR code which was easy and it was a simple order, pint of Guinness glass of pinot, fish and chips and burger and chips. Lots of food items had run out. Wine was warm, food was poor and burger raw in the middle. Shame as I’d been recommended by a friend. Maybe we were just unlucky but won’t be returning.
It was 32° in the shade so we went to sit outside. There were 4 gigantic parasols in the large third garden but only 2 opened up - and all the seats in their shade taken. We asked a member of staff if another could be opened as it was unbearably hot, and were told “the manager said no, two is enough and we have to leave the other 2 down for people who want sun”. Wonder if the same applies when it rains? Aren’t parasols for providing shade in the heat? We had no other option than to sit by a wall in the rather shabby smoking area where, while we ate, we were joined every so often by people smoking and vaping. Nice. There was no menu, just a code to scan - hateful practice, and the cheapest wine at £30 a bottle was at best room temperature and unceremoniously dumped on our table in an unchilled cooler. When we asked for some water we were told “it’s over there” and a glass container with a tap on it was pointed out, also, like us, sat sweating in 30° of sun. They certainly took ‘sort yourselves out’ to a new level. Pizzas were fine, but that’s all, set roughly on the table by a waiter who did that ‘looking away from you before the plate even hits the table’ thing. Felt lucky to be given cutlery.
Great Location
Very little toiletries.. just one soap dispenser .. which was in the shower. Mentioned it to staff and was told that’s the standard.
Me encanto!!!
La recepción es bastante chica, un poco incómoda, sin embargo entiendo le dan prioridad al Pub y restaurante. El personal que atiende la recepción está siempre ocupado, no siempre tan gentil
The check in area is not appropriate - lots of foot traffic and waiting around in a busy hallway located next to the toilets so felt like we were constantly in the way of people as we waited to check in!
The location, was very clean and staff was amazing
Breakfast was OK, Eggs benedict didn't have runny yokes. Rooms are beautiful. Location excellent. Downside was being turfed out of the garden early. We were enjoying a leisurely drink on a warm Summer evening, as were a lot of other customers. Then we were directed to another room inside, only to be turfed out of that room as well. For this reason, I would not stay their again. Some staff were a bit miserable, apart from Jude who was very pleasant and helpful. As was the young lad on Reception.
See previous question.
I was really impressed with my room and the staff was excellent I would recommend to my friends
Everything was good
Location and breakfast was top class
Small room and very expensive, I slipped in the shower no shower mat , small bed for 2
Excellent newly furnished room (15) and well presented. Brilliant location.
Nothing
Very good location
Quite dark on the stairs.
The history and age of the Inn and central location.
They could do with providing better quality loo roll. It’s cheaping out on little details like that that can make a difference to a place. Apart from that we loved it.
Close to City centre, opposite the Minster, friendly staff.
We have traveled the world and Guy Falkes Inn is probably the coolest hotel room we’ve ever had. The decor was such a vibe and the furnishings were very posh. We stayed in the Minster View room with two king beds (we had our kids with us) and it was SO dreamy. The fabrics, the furniture, the 3 chandeliers, the vanity… it was all so beautiful. The location is insane (right across from the Cathedral) and 5 min walk to the Shambles. There is no parking but there’s a paid lot nearby. Drop your luggage off first so you don’t have to drag it across cobblestones. Last, the staff was phenomenal. They were SO warm, friendly and professional. Most were young and I was so impressed by their professionalism given their ages. I hope we get to come back to the UK some day so we can stay here again. Thank you all!
Situated central to everything York has to offer in the heart of the city. The excellent beer gardens are a hidden gem with panoramic views of the Minster
Some renovation work being carried out but not in the public areas.
Excellent room nice staff very clean good four poster bed
We visit York every year and heard many good reviews about the steak pie here. Unfortunately we were both disappointed with it. Plenty of tender steak however it was dry abd definitely needed more gravy, which we requested.
Beer garden 🥰🍺
Room was very big as had top floor Friends staff Lovely hotel and great theme to it
No lift Don’t think it’s suitable for families
Not impressed, average food below par service from surly staff, don’t bother
Check in was chaotic and no designated staff to help. I booked 2 deluxe double rooms, on entering the rooms, 5 & 6, they were polar opposites, room 6 was everything I was expecting from pictures and the listed amenities online, unlike room 5 which was a shoebox, nowhere near the 172 sq ft it states online, the room was not at the rear of the building and had no view, didn’t have hardwood/parquet flooring, no toiletries, window wouldn’t stay up, bed was not fit for purpose, sleep was impossible, shower was dirty, cracked floor tiles, paint slash on black plastic cheap toilet seat. At breakfast, we were the only 2 residents in the dining room and still waited over 25 minutes for a basic breakfast. No courtesy checks from the staff to ask if the food was ok, more tea/coffee. On check out, there were no staff around so had to go looking, asked if he could help, he took our room keys and walked away, no question of if we enjoyed our stay etc… Upon returning home, I contacted the reservations team and asked what classification room 5 was, they confirmed it was a basic double room, not a deluxe double. The following morning I emailed the general manager, Alex Robinson, with my complaints, he replied later that day, however, his response was poor, he wouldn’t accept liability and offer a suitable refund/compensation for the amount of issues we were faced with, and the fact we were given the wrong room. We have emailed him multiple times since, and have yet to receive any response nearly 2 weeks later, absolutely disgusting management.
Spacious pub with lots of outdoor space. Friendly staff and the food was really nice
Great location, rooms and bar area felt rather tired but this is a historical site so wasn’t expecting 5* . Room extremely hot during summer. Beer garden great and food was excellent. Looked like it needed a good clean
Nicely decorated, in keeping with theme. Well positioned.
Put in wrong room to start with (not the more expensive one we had paid for), moved immediately when we brought it to their attention but the one we had booked wasn’t completely clean- bits on carpet, hairs in shower etc, no guest book. That said we had paid for early check in so with the mix up that could explain it.
Stanza stupenda e cibo eccezionale
Fantastic stay, gorgeous room. Spot on location. Super breakfast i can't fault at all! Will defo be back ❤️
No faults at all
Everything, the character old world charm...
I liked it all and would stay again
Guy Fawkes Inn is very atmospheric with a great sense of history. It is literally next door to the cathedral.
The street was a little noisey because the listed building status does not allow double glazing.
Atmosphere was OK nothing exceptional but also let down by miserable bar staff - not at all friendly!
Great food, really atmospheric, lovely staff. All round, it is a very enjoyable experience. We always stop here for a meal when we are visiting York. Thank you x
My partner and I booked a Sunday roast at the Guy Fawkes Inn to round off what had been a fantastic weekend away in York celebrating my partner’s birthday. We’d both been really looking forward to it and hoped it would be the perfect end to our trip. Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had. From the moment we arrived, the service was disappointing. We weren’t greeted with a friendly hello or made to feel welcome. Instead, we were simply asked if we had a reservation in a very monotone manner. We were shown to our table and asked if we’d like some water, which we said yes to, but no one asked if we’d like any other drinks. The water arrived, but there was never an opportunity to order anything else. Around five minutes later, our food order was taken. We ordered two Chicken Supreme roasts at £22.95 each and a side of cauliflower cheese for an additional £2.50. After around 25 minutes, we noticed tables that had arrived and ordered after us were already being served. A member of staff then came back over and asked us what we’d ordered again. It quickly became obvious that our order had never been put through to the kitchen. Around 10 minutes later (35 minutes after we’d originally ordered), he returned to admit he’d forgotten to submit our order and apologised, saying our food would be out quickly. We expected another 15–20 minute wait, but surprisingly it arrived within 5–10 minutes, which only reinforced our suspicion that it had been rushed. Although the presentation looked great, the quality of the food was incredibly poor. The roast potatoes weren’t crispy at all—when you tried to cut them, they just flattened. The chicken supreme was dry and completely lacking in flavour. The Yorkshire puddings were burnt beyond what should ever have been served. The red cabbage was overwhelmed with vinegar, and the “red wine gravy” tasted more like basic Bisto. The cauliflower cheese was particularly disappointing: just two small florets of cauliflower covered in what tasted like packet cheese sauce. Neither my partner nor I could bring ourselves to eat much of the meal. We explained our concerns to the waiter, who offered what felt like a very half-hearted apology and said he’d remove the food from the bill. While we appreciated not being charged, his attitude throughout the experience left a lot to be desired. What made the whole experience even more disappointing was that this meal had been booked specifically for my partner’s birthday. I’d even added a note to the reservation asking if they could make it a little special. Unfortunately, there was no acknowledgement whatsoever, and the overall experience couldn’t have been further from special. It’s such a shame because this meal was supposed to be the cherry on top of an otherwise amazing weekend in York. Instead, it left both of us feeling incredibly disappointed. I genuinely hope others have a much better experience than we did, but based on ours, I wouldn’t recommend dining here.
The staff was extremely rude.
Easy to get to conveniently situated staff were great
Noisy and breakfast not as good as it used to be but again staff were great not sure if I would come back as the other visits were far better
Garden beautiful
Could here the people upstairs talking and walking around
Welcoming and very nice room
Nothing to dislike
Location was great. Hotel & Staff were lovely. Breakfast was excellent. Lovely big beer garden to rear of the inn.
The room was clean but it was like a shoe box with a small window overlooking a roof and very dark. Nothing like the photo that Booking.com/ Guy Fawkes Inn show as a Deluxe Double. Our friends went for the cheaper room Double with garden view and it was double/triple the size of ours. I enquired to staff about room size and they confirmed Room 5 ours was the smallest and the Inn was fully booked. So please avoid it if you can. For the price we paid over £750 for a 3 night stay we were very disappointed ☹️
Alles war gut
Alle war gut
Really comfy beds, great location and lovely furnished room. Also really liked the complimentary shower gel.
Hard to get staffs attention at the reception sometimes.
Decor and historical nature, location very central. Staff were friendly. Room was spacious.
Nothing
The staff were very accommodating. Nice atmospheric place. Comfortable room. Central location. We were able to leave our bags before checking in time whilst we had a walk about and put them in our room.
Initially was in a room that opened up onto the beer garden (room 12). People sat right outside the door/window and we were unable to open this due to people resting on the window ledge. We did raise this with staff who moved us immediately. Not sure if this room was for people with access problems. It was a nice room, just not good right next to the beer garden.
excellent location
poor value for money. No toiletries provided other than a pump soap in shower which ran out and handwash
Location , and gardens. Room was nice.
There was a lot of people using the outside gardens so I think table cleanliness in the garden could have been better ie. Wiped down properly with cloth AND spray. Seemed to have been left in some other parts as well. For the price paid.. Facilities in room had more coffee than tea and no choice of teas ie. Fruit or herbal. Also no water in room, you had to ask for it.
I just want to thank the fabulous staff who helped my elderly parents during their stay. They were having a theatre trip away from home when my Mum cut her leg badly. They really looked after my parents until I could get there. The pub, accommodation and food are top drawer too!!
Fantastic location, our stay was good, great base to explore york. We had room 1 overlooking the courtyard, didnt have any problems with noise. The room was very hot though, a fan was provided which was nice. Thanks
Location was fantastic right next to the York Minster and handy for everything. The hotel bar etc is very quirky. The room had everything we could need. Bed was the comfiest I have ever had in a hotel and I wish I had checked what make the pillows were because they were so comfortable. Best nights sleep I have had in a long time. Was a bit strange people drinking right outside the window but it was quiet by the time we were going to bed. Breakfast was lovely, massive plate full.
There was nothing I didn’t like
Amazing location. Friendly staff. Room 14 (suite) is so quirky and worth paying extra IF there is no building work going off at the Minster and in desperate need of a deep clean. Lovely pies Great cooked breakfast
There is currently work going on at the Minster and we paid almost £250 for the top floor suite as a romantic birthday treat. We weren’t aware of the works ongoing and there is scaffold literally outside all the windows of the room. There were walkways right outside our bathroom and bedroom windows, with builders only feet away , looking into the room and being generally noisy while working. Had we known about the works ongoing and the intrusion, we would have booked a cheaper room or stayed elsewhere. I’m not sure why we weren’t informed of the ongoing work? My partner was having a bath in the amazing copper tub, window slightly open because of the heat (and no aircon) and there was literally a worker on the scaffold, only feet away from her. The next morning at 07:30, we were woken by the building work. ROOM 14, the suite is amazingly quirky and worth a stay BUT it is in desperate need of a good clean. When opening a window, I got my hand covered in some kind of (hopefully) animal faeces on the INSIDE of the frame. Whilst in the bath, I noticed used sanitary products on the floor - earbuds, feminine packaging. The toilet wobbled so much I thought I would fall off and the stench of the drains was overpowering at times. Overall, could and should have been an amazing , memorable stay for my partners birthday, but was sadly let down by hygiene / cleanliness standards and the ongoing work we were not notified of. Contemplating asking our credit card company to step in unless this is resolved. So far, booking.com haven’t been great either.
Room was very clean 👍 and comfortable Breakfast was excellent
Our room was above the main bar, which meant it was very noisy till closing time. Book for a minister view room, but due to the work happening on the minister we didn't get that. Nice to been told in advance or in the booking.
