We had a room with a great sea view. The room was kept clean. All the staff were helpful and polite. The breakfast was ample and well prepared.

The sauces and mayonnaise provided were awful. Brown sauce should always be HP, the sauce provided tasted awful and was watery. We found our room a bit too small, my husband kept hurting his leg when walking between the bed and dressing table. The outside of the hotel needs some TLC. The whole edifice needs repainting. The main bar/dining area needs renovating, the tables and chairs need replacing. The Great Western is a little over priced, a new luxury hotel has opened up nearby(The Nicu) and will soon become Newquay’s premier hotel. Foreign visitors like cold meats and cheese at breakfast, I did not see any. Many of our fellow guests were German, French, Dutch and even some from the US.

The hotel's location is ideal, placing you right in the heart of everything with effortless access to the beach. Both the restaurant and the rooms offer breathtaking, stunning views. Inside, the rooms are clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with great facilities and cozy beds. ​While the drinks are average, the food is excellent, and the staff are consistently helpful. Staying on a Friday night is highly recommended; the live music, vibrant bar atmosphere, and great food make for a memorable evening.

​Accessibility: Housed in a historic Victorian building, the hotel lacks lifts in certain areas. ​Luggage & Stairs: Expect multiple flights of stairs to navigate, which can be challenging if you are carrying heavy luggage or traveling with a lot of gear.

Location excellent lovely walk over the sands to central Newquay when tide out. Sea view in room 112 is the best I have ever had. Staff all polite and helpful. onsite pub/restaurant was great fun and food including brekki was all very tasty. Sea life centre worth a visit .

Door on room needs adjusting annoying banging in the wind, outside of building looking very tired and sea battered needs a lick of paint .

Die Lage und der Ausblick sind top. Das Zimmer war groß, und das englische Frühstück nach Karte war sehr gut zubereitet. Das Personal war sehr freundlich, die Zimmer waren gut gereinigt. Wer engisches Flair haben möchte, ist im Great Western richtig.

Die Zimmer sind nur über verwinkelte, enge Gänge zu erreichen. Das Fenster ließ sich nur einen Spalt öffnen. Das Wasser in der Badewanne mit sehr hohem Rand lief nur schlecht ab, so dass man mit einem Duschvorhang im Abwasser stand. Auch der Wasserdruck war gering. (Das Bad wurde jedoch täglich gut gereinigt) Wichtig für Tierhaarallergiker: In den Richtlinien von booking.com steht: Haustiere sind nicht erlaubt. Im Hotel waren jedoch sehr viele Hunde, und es stand am Eingang, dass es ein hundefreundliches Hotel ist.

We had a twin room, did not expect a single and a double. Very happy with room service and staff were polite and appeared happy.

Single bed uncomfortable but that’s have just been me, it felt lumpy. Air vent (large silver thing) outside of window, very noisy. Had to go and buy earplugs.

Die Lage mit Nähe zum Bahnhof (meine Anreise war per Zug) und in entspannter Laufnähe zu der geschäftigen Einkaufsstraße war gut. Außerdem direkt hinterm Hotel Zugang zum Strand. An der Rezeption war eine sehr nette Angestellte bei meiner Ankunft.

„Das Hotel ist in die Jahre gekommen“ trifft nicht mehr ganz zu, es ist - insbesondere von außen - wirklich heruntergekommen. Ich bin erstmal dran vorbei gelaufen weil ich es nicht erkannt habe, die Bilder auf booking müssen viele Jahre alt sein. Auch die Flure/der Aufzug sind heruntergekommen und wirken sehr schmuddelig. Was das Ganze etwas gerettet hat war, dass im Zimmer selbst das Bett und das Bad wirklich in Ordnung und sauber waren. Der Teppichboden im Zimmer allerdings wiederum alt, fleckig und wirkt unsauber, den wollte man nicht ohne Schuhe betreten (und ich bin da eher weniger pingelig). Einige Zimmer nach hinten zum Meer scheinen neuer renoviert zu sein und somit ganz schön und die Aussicht muss toll sein, ich hatte ein Zimmer zur Straße mit Ausblick auf ein Vordach auf dem sich Zigarettenstummel und der ein oder andere Müll vorgefunden haben. Auch die Nachbargebäude sind total heruntergekommen wodurch das ganze einen nicht sehr einladenden Eindruck macht (vor allem wenn man wie ich allein unterwegs ist). Ich war nur eine Nacht dort, da Bett und Bad in Ordnung waren ging das aber den Preis den ich zahlen musste definitiv nicht wert, eigentlich schon recht frech.

The bathroom door did not lock in both rooms. The housekeeping did not refresh bathroom toiletries.

Great sea view from our “comfy” double room. Beautifully styled with throws and cushions. Small bathroom with walk in shower. Staff friendly and helpful. Interesting pictures on many walls which reference history of the hotel. Close to town centre. Some noise from a very busy bar below.

The shower had zero pressure and barely any water—it was more of a dribble. It was even worse around breakfast time, when the water would stop coming out altogether. Also, the plug sockets in my room were in awkward places, which made them difficult to use for charging devices.

Fabulous location, 5 mins from train station. Lovely receptionist and housekeeper. Breakfast was nice and they adapted the full English to our requests. I would stay again.

Il Great Western è un importante hotel storico di Newquay, che affaccia direttamente sul mare e ha accesso diretto alla spiaggia sottostante. La camera che ci hanno dato era molto grande e spaziosa, quindi il soggiorno. è stato molto comodo. Il letto è grande e confortevole e sul tetto davanti al nostro terrazzo venivano spesso a trovarci i gabbiani che possono non piacere ma non ci hanno dato alcun fastidio. Il ristorante dell’hotel ha un buon rapporto qualità-prezzo. inoltre siamo capitati nella serata quiz che è stata molto divertente. La colazione è molto ampia e ben fornita, è possibile scegliere anche alcuni piatti dal menu colazione. La vista è spettacolare e si vedono tramonti stupendi!

La struttura presenta delle camere ristrutturate ma noi abbiamo soggiornato in quelle classiche. Il bagno presentava alcune imperfezioni, la vasca da bagno si sollevava da un lato e il getto d’acqua non aveva sufficiente pressione per far uscire bene l’acqua. I mobili della camera erano un po’ datati ma ci siamo trovati bene nel complesso. Siamo stati solo due notti e quindi forse non ci siamo orientati bene nella città ma la posizione non ci è sembrata comodissima: sicuramente ha giocato a nostro favore la vicinanza alla stazione dei treni, ma non siamo andati spesso in centro perché comunque ci volevano 20 minuti a piedi. Anche la zona subito intorno all’hotel non è bellissima. Tuttavia è un buon posto per le spiagge e per il trekking!

The hotel is in a perfect location. Close to town and access to the beach. My room was lovely recently decorated I believe overlooking the sea. Tea, coffee and biscuits were replenished every day. All staff and security were really friendly. Will definitely return.

The floor boards above were a little thin. We could hear footsteps and drawers.

It was a great location and the staff were very helpful. Our shower head needed replacing and they sorted it within minutes.

Only half of the hotel has been updated and you do get slightly tricked when seeing all those pictures first when looking to book. We had a twin room and it was comfy and did the job but definitely outdated.

We were in one of the newly refurbished rooms absolutely lovely & comfortable the unrefurbished part of the hotel is a bit tired but the plan is to refurbishe the whole hotel , its all very clean though . The staff are brilliant we will definitely stay again .

We stayed at the Great Western Hotel for two nights as we were in Newquay for our friends’ engagement. They were staying nearby on the beach, so we knew we wouldn’t be spending much time in the room and booked one of the newly refurbished small double rooms. It’s worth noting that these rooms really are very small. They have everything you need, including storage for clothes, a desk, chair and even a fan, but with two people you spend most of the time squeezing past each other. Even the decorative cushions and throw on the bed just took up valuable space once you removed them-they’re unnecessary in a room of this size. The bathroom is also very compact. Because of how little space there is, you really can’t have the heated towel rail on while you’re using it. We made that mistake, and I actually burnt my thigh while sitting on the toilet because you’re forced to sit at an angle due to the lack of space. It’s a small detail, but worth mentioning for anyone booking one of these rooms. Our room overlooked the beer garden and the sea, which was a lovely bonus. The room itself was clean, the bathroom was modern and well finished, and we had no issues during our stay. My only criticism of the room was the rug underneath the bed, which was full of sand when we arrived. I appreciate that it’s probably difficult to keep clean in a seaside hotel, but I honestly think they’d be better off removing it altogether. The biggest disappointment was the rest of the hotel. The entrance and corridors are very dated and had an unpleasant smell. Walking to our room initially made us wonder what we’d booked, but once we reached the refurbished section, it felt like a completely different hotel with fresh décor and even the smell of fresh paint. We didn’t eat in the restaurant, but it looked lovely, and the beer garden is definitely one of the hotel’s biggest selling points. The views over the sea are fantastic and it’s a great place to sit and relax. We paid £305 for two nights, which felt reasonable for Newquay in the summer. Overall, we had a good stay, but it’s a shame the entrance and older corridors don’t reflect the standard of the refurbished rooms. One final tip for anyone driving: the hotel’s parking is very limited (I’d estimate around 10-15 spaces), and it was fully booked when we emailed ahead. However, this wasn’t a problem as there’s a Morrisons opposite the hotel, and just a four-minute walk down the road is Tolcarne Road Long Stay Car Park. It cost us £7 per night, had plenty of spaces, and was an easy walk back to the hotel.

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel. The views were absolutely beautiful, and it’s in a perfect location near the beach. The staff were so nice, friendly, and welcoming, making our stay even more enjoyable. The breakfast was lovely with a great selection. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

There seemed to be two parts to the hotel; our room was in the second part, which was quite a walk from the main reception.
