The entire hotel is straight out of a house and home magazine, but with a warm and inviting feel. Every corner has something interesting to look at. The Karoo Art Hotel is so beautifully appointed, from the moment you step onto the beautiful black and white tiled verandah with its bespoke Field Chairs and captivating cushion fabrics and then enter the reception you cannot stop gazing around.
The hotel is a beautifully curated experience. One finds oneself surrounded by objects d’art, lovely furnishings, wonderful collections of paintings (many of which are available for purchase - a wonderful memento of a very special stay). Around each corner is another to captivate and enjoy - even the restrooms are muralled!
Our room was spacious and so comfortable, with a little verandah so one could take tea while admiring the beautiful mountain.
The dinner was everything we expected, delicious and served with old world charm. Breakfast was equally delicious.

Reviewed Jun 18, 2026Arrived at the front entrance ready for a peaceful overnight stay… only to discover the reception desk was apparently participating in a hide-and-seek competition. After wandering around like a lost tourist, I found the bar open and asked the gentleman behind the counter where to check in. Between Olympic-level bubblegum chewing, he informed me I should wait at reception because staff were “changing shifts.”
Fair enough. Back to reception I went… where absolutely nobody was still waiting for me. Sat down at a table in complete silence — no music, no staff, just me questioning my life choices.
While waiting on the verandah, things took an unexpected action-movie turn as a few people across the road started shouting and throwing bottles at each other. Meanwhile my wife was sitting in the car outside, where random people were trying to get her to open the window. Very welcoming atmosphere.
Then came the grand finale: as we walked up the stairs together, a caretaker/staff member shouted at us from across the stoep demanding to know what we wanted. Apparently the place was fully booked with Lamborghinis and fancy cars, and ordinary mortals like us were not meant to exist in the vicinity.
Needless to say, we performed the fastest checkout in history despite never actually checking in, and drove to Ladismith instead.
10/10 for unexpected adventure. 0/10 for hospitality. Would recommend if you enjoy mystery, suspense, and roadside survival games.

Reviewed Jun 8, 2026🌟 An Unforgettable Weekend Oasis: A Masterclass in Karoo Hospitality!
If you are looking for the ultimate weekend escape where art, soul, incredible food, and genuine warmth collide, look no further than the Karoo Art Hotel. From the moment we checked into the Potters Cottage on Friday afternoon until our reluctant departure on Monday midday, every single moment felt like magic.
Here is why this slice of Barrydale heaven has officially won our hearts (and why we are already planning our return trip!):
🏡 The Accommodation & Pet-Friendly Warmth
The Potters Cottage is an absolute dream—beautifully appointed, cozy, and full of character. But what truly sets the Karoo Art Hotel apart is their genuine hospitality. Our chocolate Labrador, Shadow, wasn't just tolerated; he was welcomed with open arms. Finding a world-class hotel that treats your four-legged family member like royalty is a rare gem.
🍽️ A Culinary Journey to Remember
The food here deserves its own standing ovation.
Friday Night: We kicked off the weekend with pre-dinner drinks on the balcony, watching a breathtaking Karoo sunset paint the sky. Dinner in the dining room followed, featuring a legendary Karoo Lamb and a fillet steak cooked to absolute perfection. We topped it off with a sublime dessert of chocolate gateau and vanilla ice cream that I’m still dreaming about.
Saturday Night: The kitchen flexed its versatility by serving up a sensational pasta dish that was pure comfort on a plate.
Sunday Treat: A delightful daytime visit to Jacques’ Bakery for some local artisanal goodness.
🌲 Exploration & Adventure
The hotel serves as the perfect launchpad for exploring the rich offerings of the area:
The Healing Waters: On Saturday, we headed to Warmwaterberg to soak in the mineral-enriched hot waters—pure bliss.
Local Treasures: Saturday afternoon was spent browsing the vibrant Moreson Market and popping into The Langhuis, which offers a stunning collection of antiquities.
Magical Mornings: Both Sunday and Monday mornings were defined by early AM swims in the hidden waterfalls of the Tradouw Pass. Swimming in those natural, mineral-enriched waters surrounded by towering cliffs was an unforgettable experience.
The Verdict: It was incredibly sad to drive out of town on Monday. The Karoo Art Hotel doesn’t just offer a bed for the night; they offer an experience that rejuvenates the soul. Thank you for a spectacular weekend—Shadow, my partner, and I cannot wait for the return trip!!

Reviewed May 18, 2026I visited the Karoo Art Hotel in Van Riebeeck Street Barrydale from 8 to 10 May 2026 while attending a writing course hosted at the hotel’s conference centre. Dating back to the 1930s, the hotel has a warm, friendly old-world charm that immediately makes one feel at home.
Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff, while the fireplace in the reception area created an inviting and cosy atmosphere. Throughout the hotel, beautiful artworks are displayed everywhere, and at times one almost feels as though one is walking through an art gallery rather than a hotel.
During our stay, live Blues music was performed in the bar on the Friday evening, adding greatly to the unique atmosphere and character of the hotel. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our visit, the rooms were very clean, spacious and interestingly decorated, and the food was truly outstanding.

My Karoo Lamb in the restaurant was a wonderful way to end the day and please everyone, when Rik or Wayne offer to drive you in "Moon2" to a wild swim in a spectacular pool on the Trudow Pass with them in the morning, please don't make a mistake and say NO :)
The new Owners have worked hard to re-create the historic atmosphere whilst balancing that with building in modern amenities many guests want these days
The restaurant dinner menu was expensive with little choice. The buffet and cooked options at breakfast were poor
This is far more than just a place to stay — it’s an experience that lingers long after you’ve left.
Each room is uniquely styled with colour, and thoughtful artistic touches that reflect the soul of the Karoo. It feels less like a hotel and more like stepping into a living gallery. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, attracting a mix of travellers exploring the beautiful Route 62. The food is simple and delicious, the sourdough bread baked in the bakery on site was my favourite! What truly sets this place apart, is its authenticity. It is quirky and charming. It’s the kind of place where you can completely unwind, be yourself, and feel part of something special.

Reviewed Mar 11, 2026If you ever find yourself trundling through the endless, sun-toasted expanse of the Karoo, where ostriches eye you as if you owe them rent, the Karoo Art Hotel appears like a miraculous mirage—except this mirage comes with gin cocktails and art on the walls.
Stepping inside feels rather like falling into the parlour of a particularly eccentric aunt who has inherited a small museum, a theatre troupe, and several mischievous ghosts. The walls are festooned with paintings that appear to have escaped from dreams, while the furniture seems to be engaged in a quiet competition to see which piece can be the most charmingly peculiar.
The hotel is a proper explorer’s gem, the sort of place you stumble upon when you are convinced civilisation has abandoned you to the sheep and the starlight. Breakfasts arrive with the zeal of a feast prepared for a hungry safari party, and the locals offer stories so colourful you half expect them to come with subtitles.
Wandering the crooked corridors or sipping a drink under the vast, star-punched night sky, one feels wrapped in a kind of whimsical magic—as though the Karoo itself has decided to give you a wink and a nudge, saying, “Well, you’ve found my secret, haven’t you?”
