Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The new owners are renovating & giving the hotel a new look. The staff were very friendly & extremely helpful. I would like to mention Mathew in particular who was very welcoming & informative in his recomendations about Dunbar. The hotel location is excellent for travellers as it is a few minutes walk from the train station. I enjoyed having a walk along Belhaven beach. Every single person I met was kind & approachable during my 3 day stay. The weather was perfect - I would recommend going for a visit.
The bed & bedlinen could do with an upgrade. Otherwise, eveything was clean & homely.
Close to the station. Breakfast included.
Badly in need of a refresh. Usual breakfast room was temporarily unavailable. Breakfast was very average & a long wait to be served.
Central location. The sheets & towels were clean
The room was cramped and the dank smell of damp hung darkly throughout our stay. The floorboards creaked and the noise transference from the adjacent rooms masked not the groaning bowls of the occupants. The mastic in the bathroom was mouldy and the sink was cracked. The furniture was tired and the faux leather on the bed and chair were trying to hold onto the last flaking patches of brown leatherette but (like an old man’s dandruff contrasting with a black jacket as it settles on the shoulders) it had lain, like a dusting of snow, on the carpet. We paid £290 for two nights. It is not easy to calculate how much I’d require to be paid to return, but it would be more than was charged.
Looks nice outside and a view of the sea.
Bed was hard, pillows flat, zero hot water in the morning and no staff around.
Gentillesse du personnel.
Odeur désagréable de gras, hygiène de la chambre à revoir.
Quality shampoo, conditioner, hand wash etc and fluffy towels.... The staff were very helpful with our queries...
Bed to hard, pillows too flat... Parking was limited, we had to park quite a bit away from hotel unfortunately.....
Good location
Disappointing 4 night stay. Room rate £106.00 per night plus £10 per person breakfast. Room small, tiny bathroom, certainly. not value for money. I had breakfast on first morning. did not return for remainder of my stay. Breakfast was inedible. 2 fried greasy hard eggs with burnt edges on toast which I refused to eat, yet hotel still charged me £10. Shocking standard. My husband slipped in shower and requested an anti slip mat. Hotel chose to ignore his request. Unlikely to return.
Nice room for two. A good sized room and bathroom. On the Main Street close to shops and grocery.
Lovely location, comfy bed and friendly staff
The location
The room was very dated and looked as if the bare minimum was done with it. The breakfast was not good
The location
We were given the room above the bar and they clse it at 1.00 am, when Internet says 10.00 pm It is not aceptable
Really lovely and helpful staff. I was travelling with my five month old and they made it incredibly easy, providing a cot, helping me with bags and the pram, (including letting me drop things off early as I was heading to a wedding and wouldn’t be back to check in properly until much later) and generally being incredibly kind, friendly and helpful! The room itself was incredibly clean and well equipped with everything I needed, and the hotel is in a great location, minutes away from the train station and right at the start of the main high street with lots of shops, cafes, pubs and things to see. Had a fantastic stay and would return again!
Central location. Ample storage in room.
Only 6 parking spaces. Room - bedside lights way too high up, had to get out of bed to turn off. Mould in shower. TV removed from wall (brackets still up) and placed on small desk so little room to put anything on desk. No shelf or anywhere in tiny bathroom to put toiletry bag on. Breakfast was good if cooked, but lukewarm pot of water to make our own tea. Toast just dumped on the table. No butter, only Small tub of Flora. One choice of cereal and a half open large packet of Weetabix. Table not laid properly, had to hunt for salt. The only place to sit apart from bedroom was in the bar. They seem to be renovating so maybe better in the future.
The property is under renovation. The result is no restaurant, noisy workmen at 9pm???? The only positive factor is the location No housekeeping as our room was not attended to at all.
Location
The breakfast. It was inedible. badly cooked and very greasy with hard fried eggs, and not much choice.
Location is great for the station
Cleanliness was totally absent in the bathroom. The shower was a disgrace ,with black mould.Despite advising the hotel how to clean it they did half a job, leaving me no choice then to complain . A HOTEL should never, ever have black mold inside and outside a shower. The whole bathroom left a lot to be desired and needs to be ripped out and replaced ASAP 😡 I would never expect a Hotel to give a guest a room with a bathroom as dirty as that...
We liked leaving
Tired, grubby 70s decor, bar full of noisy workmen
Het bed was heerlijk groot en lag heerlijk en het personeel hield rekening met mijn zwangerschap
In de randen van de douchecabine zat nog zwarte schimmel.
Enviably located between the railway station and the High Street, this hotel has a lot going for it, but also needs some work. It appears to be in the midst of a refurb: the dining room was closed for a major revamp, and there was a smell of fresh paint, everywhere, since much of the place seemed to have been recently painted white. My room was spacious, if basically furnished. The bed was enormous, and the linen immaculate. the towels were new and fluffy. Unfortunately the bathroom was in need of a total refit, and seemed far from clean - the skirting boards had layers of dust, and the whole room was in need of a good scrub. I went out and bought disinfectant wipes to go over every surface, just to feel comfortable using the bathroom. On the positive side, the one member of staff I met in 3 days was friendly and helpful. This place has a lot of potential, but they need raise standards in certain areas if they want guests to return.
Location. Room was fine.
Breakfast, not value for money. Shower had mould.....yuk
Location
Cleanliness and poor bathroom facilities. Sink coming away from the wall
Location very good, under 5mins walk to the station. Late check-in was also appreciated. WiFi was good. Beds were just acceptable, not up to Premier Inn standards.
Hot water took A LOT of running before it came through. Breakfast selection was limited & not very tasty, service was sometimes slow, possibly this was affected due to refurbishment work in the usual dining area. The main room light in room 21 wasn't working. General appearance of the place was quite tired.
The location and the effort that the staff put into making us welcome.
Tired in places but there are serious efforts with new decorations and carpets. The breakfast was fine but had run out of several items on the menu.
Not much to like. Towels were good.
No hot water on one day and had to have a cold shower. Poor complaints management. Breakfast poor. Everyone was complaining about everything. Two women complained that their bedroom door didn't lock properly
Recent renovations have really made this a perfect place to stay at its price. Excellent breakfast.
When I stayed was a work in progress nearing completion.
Not a lot.
The toilet had a bad smell & damp on the ceiling.
Close to places of interest
Needs updating
We managed to get one of the six parking spots by the hotel.
There was no indication the kitchen/restaurant was closed during our stay, This meant we ad to walk to a different hotel for our evening meal, not a good result for 2 people who have difficulty walking. The shower was difficult to operate and get the correct temperature, not helped as taps were the wrong way round, cold to left, hot to right.
Just returned from a 2 night stay. Hotel is quite dated and in need of a refurb. Our room was a bit dingy, however the bedding and towels were clean. We did both sleep very well but wouldn't return. You can book breakfast which is priced at £10pp, which to be fair was very reasonable, it was ok although we didn't bother on our 2nd morning. The bar was busy both nights with other friendly residents. Great location if you're looking to get into Edinburgh, train station 2 minute's away and bus stop literally over the road.
I complained about the room.In its present state it shouldn’t be let out. Shower room was disgusting asked a member of staff if we could be moved.Told no rooms were available.Offered to take £30 off the bill which I rejected.Told him room we were in wasn’t fit for purpose. The following day was told £65 would be taken off the bill which I agreed to. Again I told the member of staff the room wasn’t fit for purpose his explanation was the new owners were concentrating on the kitchen first and new the rooms needed refurbished. I did not use the breakfast facilities explaining to the member of staff if the kitchen was as filthy as the room why would I.While I was settling the bill another guest appeared and basically told a member of staff her room was disgusting.
The other guest told us there was never any one around to complain too.
Location and staff
Beds too small, not comfortable, room too hot to sleep
Location as good
No advance warning of the restaurant being closed, heated towel rail in bathroom constantly on with now way to run it off. Bathroom too small, shower head sprayed in all direction needs replacing, tap to wash hand basin too big water splashed over sink bowl. No information about the bar or WiFi access, tv only worked on a few channels. Smell of the Chinese restaurant below in corridor and room.
The location, parking ( 5 bays ), staff were excellent as was the breakfast (£10pp extra when we went and worth it ).
Not so much a didn't like , the room was very basic but that is reflected in the price
great location near to town. room size good and bathroom also
couldn’t open bedroom window as indian takeaway directly opposite. car parking advertised as available but only 5 spaces for 20 odd rooms- alternative parking on street but all nearby streets had time limits so a real treck to residential area and long way to carry bags. restaurant closed for refurbishment and being turned into a nepali/indian theme- not sure that fits inside a hotel. hotel generally tired.
Central location, car park
Very small room and we were told we would have to pay for breakfast as we had booked through booking.com and they needed to retrieve their commission.
Friendly staff, room was fine but basic. I've stayed there before and it's fine - if you want a really posh, up-market, super-duper hotel, you need to go elsewhere.
A pity they couldn't provide an early breakfast - not even a continental (cereal and toast/roll/bread).
the room was good the bedding & towels were perhaps the cleanest we’ve ever seen
after a exhausting day walking around golf course in the heat was looking forward to just chilling watching football on TV but it didn’t work asked reception but they said they would mention to manager Breakfast really good but room decor in dining room needs updating
Bed was comfortable
Bathroom was in need of a deep clean, dust on kettle, dust window panes, floor could use a deep clean
Room was comfortable - except for damage to ceiling due to water leak
I appreciate renovations are required. Advance notice would have been courteous, as kitchen was closed. Staff tried hard, but service was lacking due to ongoing upgrades. Very expensive overnight stay, £165 for 2 people B&B
Great location central to Dunbar
Tv wasn’t working Shower curtain hanging off Place needs a total upgrade looked like the room wasn’t dusted in months Breakfast was iffy, pay for what you expect I suppose
Location ok. Was convenient for family funeral.
Hotel very dated and needs to be taken up to standard. Not the cleanest with bathroom fittings not properly secured, would have benefited from a good vacuuming as carpet had debris lying about and old chairs were full of dust etc. As for breakfast time lack of service and communication no milk at counter etc, never even asked if everything ok even when we checked out..
Lovely hosts, good location and a clean room.
Price was a little high for what we got.
Great location and exceptional staff. Great and very reasonable priced bar.
Nothing not to like
Central location and very convenient for train station
Hotel has seen better days, and the room was ok but sealants in en-suite were black and mouldy. Also left a phone charger by accident, identified this quickly and informed fhe hotel, and location of the charger in the room, but it was never forwarded despite my offer to pay costs.
Location. Staff helpful and pleasant.
Strange smell in corridor snd bedroom - maybe of food cooking from shops below.. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for refurbishment.
Location for us was perfect. Kyle on reception looked after us snd helped store our electric bikes. Breakfast was nice.
We were given 2 keys, 1 for the room, 1 for the front door. They locked the doors at 10pm so knew we would need to use the front door key as we were watching the World Cup in a local pub. Upon our return, the front door key didn’t work!! Thankfully a downstairs window was ajar and we managed to get in. At breakfast we had to wait 45 mins for our food, it wasn’t busy so no idea why. My husband mentioned the front door key issue to one of the staff which was met by “are you sure” and tested the key only to find that yes we were sure… the key did not fit the lock!! His answer? We should have googled the number and called… really?? Who on earth thinks that this is acceptable. Property is tired and needs refurbishing. Where we stored our bikes, at the back with no security or shelter, it was an absolute dump (with a full skip of rubbish). Unfortunately we could find nowhere else at short notice.
Location was good
Staff weren’t very friendly, rooms were not clean , a patron helped us more than the staff
Really enjoyed my stay at Royal Macintosh Hotel. The place has a unique character, and after chatting with the staff, I found out about its connection to the RMS Mauretania, which made it even more interesting. I also heard about the refurbishment plans and how they're bringing in a Himalayan touch alongside the hotel's maritime heritage. The idea of going from sea-inspired history to the spirit of the Himalayas is something quite special and not something you see every day. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming, and it felt like a place with a story rather than just another hotel. If you're looking for proper hospitality and somewhere with a bit of character, I'd definitely recommend a visit. Looking forward to seeing the refurbishment when it's finished and will definitely be back soon.
Beat hotel in dunbar good location
Area. Staff
Damp in room and bathroom. Shower curtain was black. Pillows flat.
Such wonderful staff, who went way beyond the expected to make us feel welcome.
Overnight stay as attending a wedding nearby We had a king size room with en-suite room decor tired and very small tv not working ! En-suite very small we didn’t bother to shower wait until we were home as our own bedroom was4 star compared to this ! Breakfast was poor Very cheap quality food left most of it tea and coffee in hours again cheap and nasty Staff in bar restaurant friendly would not recommend this place it’s not hotel quality
I had a wonderful stay here and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Dunbar. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and relaxing from the moment I arrived. My room was spotlessly clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, making it a great place to unwind after a busy day. The staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful, and always happy to assist with any questions or requests. Their hospitality really made the stay even more enjoyable. What impressed me most was the excellent value for money. The accommodation is very budget-friendly without compromising on comfort, cleanliness, or service. If you’re looking for an affordable and enjoyable place to stay in Dunbar, this is definitely one of the best options available. I would happily stay here again on my next visit.
Really friendly staff. Great hotel
Nothing
Good location.
Good location. Very close to train station.
Wish there had been more outlets. I had to plug my phone in next to the door, leaving it on the floor.
Charming hotel in a great location with super friendly, very helpful staff!
The location was good. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was very small and had no chairs other than 1 wooden folding chair. Other than that it was fine. Clean room.
Already commented on that
very good
nothing
The location was great.
Very old and tired hotel. Felt dirty and dusty. The breakfast lounge was cold and dark.
We stayed here when cycling the Coast and Castles route. We found the staff very helpful and polite and they let us put our bikes in the main hallway out of the weather. Unfortunately the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment and the restaurant part of it is currently closed so we had to find somewhere else to eat up in the town. We had an upstairs room which was a good size and had a wardrobe. The bathroom needed a refurbishment, the shower had black mould around the sealant, behind the towel rail was a three finger size hole. Around the pedestal of the sink had black marks and the toilet bowl could have done with a much better clean. The Bathroom flooring needed replaced. Plenty of nice soap to use and we were given a set of lovely new towels. Breakfast was very disorganised, no hot water for tea, we had to ask and a very limited choice of cereals was on offer. We also had to ask for fruit juice.
Easy to book and pay. Location great as central and room clean and comfortable.
Parking limited.
Nothing
Paid £140 for a night with a sea view to look at a building, room was nothing special with two beds pushed together. Hotel it's self very dated and no food available.wifi is as poor network speed is very slow.shower water pressure very poor also.
Well appointed & equipped room, hotel was handily located close to the town centre
Only issue we had was the close proximity of the main road, traffic noise, especially HGV trucks were passing noisily 24x7
Very poor /small room for 4 nights had to ask for 1 mug / 2 glasses /toilet rolls / Tv only worked now and again .over £100 per night and no breakfast could pay £20 to have per day.
Location
The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast hot food was very good and had a good selection of food that you could order for a specific time which was really good.
The room we booked was a small double which a little a bit too small for 2 people but for the price of £60pp per night (excluding breakfast) it was decent value for money based on it being a bank holiday.
The whole building was “tired” with lots of aspects of the building needing some TLC. In our accommodation the en suite had been shoehorned into a narrow space and did not feel clean. There was no surface on which to put a wash bag. Breakfast was feeble with cereal choices limited to fruit and fibre, crunchy nut corn flakes and weetabix. The poached eggs were undercooked and the “crushed avocado” was a smear on the muffin. We were offered toast and given one slice each. Although not expensive at £130 for two people on a one night stopover, I have stayed in much better kept hotels for similar prices. Overall was a disappointing end to our 2 week tour of Scotland. I won’t stay here again.
Well, that was a depressing stay. We'd booked a room here some time ago, on the recommendation of a friend but think standards have slipped. Signs told us the kitchen was 'closed ' so we avoided breakfast & ate elsewhere. Everywhere is so tired & grubby giving the place the air of a hostel rather than a hotel, especially one with 'royal' in its name. Our room was depressing. The 'bed' was a mattress on a base pushed against the wall. No headboard. The mattress cover must have been for a single bed; it certainly didn't fit to the sides so was uncomfortable to sleep on. The only surface had the TV & kettle tray, no units or table or even chairs! Nowhere to hang wet coats, not even a hook on the door. Sockets half way up the wall! Useless. Walls were paper thin, could hear even a yawn in the next room & people using the toilet above! Bathroom - black mold in shower, mirror too low so husband had to bend fown to use it, watered-down shampoo that didn't lather. Bin not emptied. Mugs not washed/replaced daily. What a shambles.
With beautiful original features and a good position at the end of the high street, the hotel should be the first choice in Dunbar. Sadly, however, the Royal Mack has been allowed to slip into disrepair bordering on neglect. On the positive side, the linen was clean. Breakfast was… adequate. Cleanliness generally was not high on the priority list; I can only imagine that the cleaners have too little time to do a thorough job. Mould in the corners of the shower, the toilet brush was disgusting and the stair carpet looked as though it had never been hoovered, let alone cleaned. The beautiful sash windows have been left to gradually deteriorate, the shower head was in one of two brackets, the broken one having been left in situ. The silicone sealer had not been finished off, just squirted and left. A sign had been removed and blutak just left on the wardrobe, wires were left hanging below the tv and the shower door wouldn’t close, the products were fixed to the shower wall at around five feet, which made them eye level for my wife- I could go on. At £160 a night, this was supposed to be a superior room…. The car park was filled with maintenance workers’ vans and street parking runs out at 08.30, guests were not a priority. Hotel accommodation has moved on from this and it moved on years ago, surely the owners need a wake up call; serious money needs to be spent and a designers eye needs focusing on this dying hotel.
It's times like this when you wonder whether some of the reviewers have actually used the same place. The hotel is so tired, grubby, shabby, lacking in TLC The room was practically all bed - I say bed, it was a mattress without headboard Mattress topper was a foot more narrow than the bed Wall mounted side lights were 5 feet up, high above the bed and their integral USB points (if you choose to use them) therefore mean that your phone would have to hang dangling from the cable and socket. And my LED reading light flickered between doom and bright. The walls are so thin, and anyone closing a room door makes the whole room shudder. The shower cubicle is full of mold. And I'm sure the toiletries - shampoo / body wash - have been watered down. I had to pour out half a bottle to get any lather. No surface to put anything down other than on the floor. The car parking takes 5 cars only shoe-horned in. On our first night we agreed to be totally boxed in by 2 worker's vans, which caused problems when our start time in the morning changed Currently the kitchen/dining room is closed so have no idea how they are doing breakfast. For which, incidentally, they charge £10 on top of the ridiculous £125 pn!!? Room was "serviced" but tea/coffee tray not refreshed, bin not emptied, cups not cleaned. WiFi serviceable. The towels were nice and fluffy.
Very convenient location
Tired decor, broken light and blind, didn't supply shampoo or conditioner despite saying on listing they supplied toiletries (only hand lotion and shower gel in shower), no hooks for towels or coats, expensive for what it was
The location was great, parking was easy, the bed was super comfy. The little pub is great, and the owner is somewhat friendly.
The shower head had lots of grime on it, to the point my partner didn't use it. The breakfast was woeful. Booked the night before, and was an hour late and very disappointing full Scottish breakfast.
Helpful staff, nice room, good shower, central location Let me keep my bike in the room
Room a bit small.
Unsere bislang negativste Hotelerfahrung,
Location good, room clean, bed spotless and comfortable. Hotel a bit tired but didn’t affect our stay.
Not everyone can eat a full breakfast, a brioche bun with 1 slice of bacon £10 was a bit much :(
The architecture
Under renovation and construction
Location Staff helpful and polite Got a room upgrade four poster room was more spacious Haggis on breakfast was lovely
No restaurant as getting refurbished as new owners Noise from slamming front door No fruit offer on breakfast Perhaps add kippers or haddock breakfast
location that's about all I can say as the hotel was far from my expectations.
In one of the rooms I booked their was an over whelming smell of dampness I complained to the maid and was told to turn the bathroom fan on! the radiator in that room had been disconnected to the system, the other room the TV was not working and on the evening we arrived had NO hot water, I complained to an employee again in the morning and confirmed my suspicion that the radiator had leaked and soaked the carpet from one end of the room to the other, he said he would contact the manager and the manager by phone and offered to refund me 25% of the cost, wether this happens or not I am not so sure. I do have photo's but for some reason I am unable to upload on this page.
I never opted for breakfast as I was leaving early the location is perfect for town centre and seaside I liked the bed it was comfy and spotless clean the towels supplied were so good
I didn’t like how we had to wait at the bar while the only girl on duty was the barmaid and the receptionist to check us in .. I didn’t like the decor / furnishings they were a bit dated but functional … The parking area was very small with only one disabled space which was taken Checking out in the morning no one was there I just left my key in kitchen
Location near station staff were friendly and room and bathroom need upgrades but bed was comfy!
Bedroom and bathroom looked tired and kettle didn’t work in room. Also food could be better it’s ok but could be improved a lot!
Location and staff. Town is lovely.
Tired looking in parts. Room and general decor inside and out needs upgrading. Ok if it was budget accommodation.
Location. Comfy bed and clean
Thin walls, could hear other guests talking in their room
Lovely atmosphere nice and clean room to stay .Friendly staff and budget friendly. Best place to stay in Dunbar .
Good location, convenient parking
Room in need of serious upgrade, bathroom in particular. Tired, stained, could be cleaner (floor not clean at all).
Food and staff very good
Nothing
Great location, very friendly staff and ideal for a night Amenities provided were excellent too
Bathroom was a bit tired if I’m being picky
Had lovely stay at hotel. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. Nice room with very comfy bed. Hotel is well situated with shops just around the corner. The food we had was lovely. Also lovely strong shower.
Wasn't really anything we didn't like .
Very comfy bed, shower was good and loved the arran aromatic toiletries
Old fashioned decor and a bit shabby
LOCATION TO TRAIN STATION GREAT
CLEANLINESS - SHOWER SOAP APPLICATORS GROWING MOLD SHOWER GENERALLY POOR,CRAMPED. ROOM SMALL AND CRAMPED
Central location close to town amenities and rail station and beach.
Very noisy bar with loud unrelaxing radio music. We weee not informed until arrival that dinners were not available during our stay.
Great location, beside the train station. Comfortable and quiet.
Everything was fine. Perfect for one or two night stay, but not much more than that.
Location
Very run down.
Staff were very friendly, girl serving behind the bar was excellent
Hotel was a little tired looking could do with some investment. Car park is small had to park up down the road
The location was fantastic, the staff, especially the young lady on Reception, In the Bar and the same Young Lady who Served our Breakfast. The selection of breakfast options, the selection of Beers n Spirits at the Bar.
The only criticism I (we) have was that the building is very old (Listed Building) there for the Widows are not the best at stopping the cold sea breeze so our room was very, very cold. The NEW OWNER is upgrading the Hotel and I am sure the windows are on his / her to do list, however he may have problems due to the listed building protocol, but surely common sense will prevail and then away with the gale. The electrics in the room (11) need looking at, location of the sockets as no where to plug the kettle in. It is a beautiful building (Hotel) with lots of potential and once the NEW Owner gets it completed it will be top notch and fantastic The above is only constructive criticism as we understand the New Owner is doing the best they can. Regards and we will be back..
God location
Friendly staff
No hot water for shower or sink. Bad odour on duvet on one of the beds.
