Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Historic hotel.. we liked the historical connection. Excellent staff. Some floor boards are a bit creaky. Good food with generous portions.
Climb to room could be difficult for some.
Large room, very comfortable bed. Breakfast was prompt when ordered. The hotel parking was a bonus.
The controls for the shower in room 4 were confusing so I took a bath instead. The plastic non-slip bath mat had black mould so I didn't use it. It should be thrown away.
Nothing really in all honesty, only positive was it is a pub to
Windows that didn’t stop outside noise, being able to hear the person next door snoring. List goes on
Location and staff
Good location decent breakfast
Nice location.
I know it's 600 years old but some of the photos seem to have fairly modern rooms..just would if been nice to have one of those..
Restaurant good for Dinner & breakfast
Dining table varnish has gone very sticky
Excellent position for a trip to StAlbans, nice to have a big room for us all to stay together.
Couple of the beds weren't particularly comfortable.
Location was excellent. The staff were excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable about the hotel and the surrounding area of St Alban's, which is a very pretty, historic town. Also the morning chef adapted the menu and was happy to cook something not listed. The breakfasts were very good. The rooms had an ironing board and iron, toiletries and also tea and coffee making facilities.
A very old building, so possibly not suitable for those not so able, as quite a few stairs to rooms. Possibly the rooms could have been a bit cleaner, ie skirtings, window ledges properly cleaned but really this was a minor issue.
The shower
Very outdated for the price of a stay, needs a good paint job, very noisy
Breakfast was fine ! Location was good
State of shower room
The location is superb! It's a 5 minutes walk from all amenities in the heart of St.Albans. Beautiful building, very quirky inside, you can feel the history. Loved the room, it was very well equipped. Fresh towels, tea, coffee maker, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, soap was added. Very comfortable bed. Lovely and very helpful staff.
Room: Comfortable, clean and full of character, with everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. Breakfast: Excellent breakfast with a good choice, generous portions and friendly service. Location: Fantastic central St Albans location, ideally placed for exploring the city and its attractions.
Duvet too think for time of year.
Had a free room upgrade which was a lovely surprise. Room had loads of character. Nice welcoming atmosphere and so central for sightseeing. All members of staff who I came into contact with were all very friendly and willing to help. Loved the theatre of the venue. Very cozy bed.
The car park area is tight. Not for a new or nervous driver. I’m sure my floor wasn’t even which did make me feel like I’d had a drink but that goes with the age and style of building.
Nothing
Everything part from staff & BREAKFAST
Food was good evening meal and breakfast cooked was very good. Location central character hotel.
Water in room didn't taste great for a hot drink maybe filter jug. Remote for tv didn't work. Batteries?
A fabulous old pub and Inn. Great location in the centre of town by the Cathedral/Abbey. It's an old building so expect some creakiness but still go because of its great charm and friendly staff.
Excellent location in St Albans for Verulamium, Cathedral, St Albans Arena, shopping, restaurants. Quirkiness and history of the Tudor building. Staff friendly and accommodating.
Cleanliness in bathroom not great. Dirty grouting in shower and the higher up the tiles, the blacker the grouting was. Mould on the ceiling above the shower. Shower seal and surrounding it very dirty.
Lovely breakfast
Very noisy as it's on the road but not the hotels fault.
It is an ancient building with all the attendant difficulties. However our room was very quiet with no sign of the ghosts. Car parking was very convenient for central St Albans.
It is an old building with corridors full of ups and downs.

The location is great and the breakfast was lovely
The pillows in the room were awful and we were directly above the kitchen so got woken very early with the chef banging around and whistling. The bins being collected extremely early also. Such a shame
The location was great and right in the heart of the city. The breakfast was also good. The room was spacious and clean and the beds comfy.
Just needs a deep clean but it is charming and everyone is very helpful - I would defo stay again
L’hôtel est très bien placé au centre ville avec parking gratuit pour les résidents ce qui est fondamental en ville. Charmante auberge ancienne . Rapport qualité prix correct.
The White Hart is in a great location on the high street and just a short walk over to the cathedral. Its full of character consistent with being 600 years old. Cosy couple of bars downstairs too.Our room was spacious and had opposing windows that meant we could get a nice breeze. Despite sleeping with an open window (a plus), it was surprisingly quiet.
It's to be expected that an Olde English hotel is going to have some quirks - like the lack of a lift and a number of stairs up and down to get to your room. We were on a longer trip so had large heavy suitcases which weren't ideal for the location. In other locations we stayed on this trip, we left the suitcases in the car and just took what we needed to the room. That wasn't an option for this stay, however we still very much enjoyed our stay. But you should be aware of this if you can't lift and carry your luggage! If you plan accordingly, it's a great place to stay.
Location and breakfast excellent
Multiple narrow doors and steps to get to the room; it was hard going getting the luggage to the room.
The location could not be bettered
Every floorboard in the hotel squeaked. The tudor vibe seems to be an excuse for lack of attention to cleaning and decorating. Bedroom drastically lacked storage space for clothes. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but the toast, for example, used the very cheapest bread available.
the standard of cooking was good. no compliants
the only compliant was that the matress needed replacing for you felt the board , otherwise i was quite happy and staff were very helpfull thank you
Position was excellent.
Location
The rooms really need updating
Proximity to where I needed to be for the weekend
The room was drab, inconvenient to get to and very stuffy; even with the window wide open.
Lots of character and space. Central location and parking available.
Dated soft furnishings which had lost their comfort and cleanliness. Stained sofa and hard bed and flat pillows.
Great location within walking distance of the cathedral and shops.
The bed was very uncomfortable. The springs made very loud noises when turning over in bed and woke us up every time. The toilet has a macerator which makes a very loud noise so woke us up in the night randomly going off. The initial welcome was friendly but when we came in and out throughout our stay, none of the staff smiled or said hello. Also worth noting, as the pub is very old, the bedroom floor was incredibly sloped and the hallway ceilings were so low I couldn't stand up straight.
Incredibly well preserved old Inn. The building overall is a remarkable survivor, among many in the city from the 1500's onwards. Also of note is the inter-war oak panelling throughout the interior - another fantastic survival of heritage. The staff were lovely, always helpful when approached. The breakfast servings were very generous and the cooked element was prepared freshly to order. Despite being above the bar area, I had no issues with noise in the 3 nights I stayed there.
Despite all of the positives, there are some negatives. I know the hospitality industry is facing challenges but the simple fact is that the rooms are in urgent need of refurbishment. Walls need repainting, the carpets are tired and faded. The furnishings are well past their useful life. The curtains for instance are really flimsy (and dirty) and don't really block out the external light meaning some rooms cannot really be in the dark. The wardrobe was not somewhere I'd put my clothes. The vanity mirror light was not working and the heater/coolers appeared to be non-functional. The beds also appear to be in need of replacement. As I say, I know all this costs money (at a time when everyone is stretched) but if the rooms could be given some tlc this Inn could become one of the premier spots for stays in the city. With all that said, I'd still come again!
Fantastic location, parking.
The corridors and room were very dowdy and "worn". Not cheap (and I thought when booking that breakfast was included when it wasn't).
The spot of the hotel
The back of the hotel ..needs brush up in bar area
It was a lovely modern hotel I had my wedding prep here staff were welcoming and food was nice
The White hart was so comfortable and the staff exceptional - brilliant location and excellent food
Staff and hotel position for visiting St.Albans were both excellent. The food deserves a recommendation in my view, breakfast particularly It's a 600 year old hotel so be prepared for uneven stuff floors etc. The room were in had a four poster and an old fireplace, little sparse on the decorations, i didn't mind it though.
Macerator toilets are not my ideal but this one was a good un.
Location,food
Very narrow stairs and very steep,up to bedrooms this is not mentioned in details of hotel in discription
Clean, pleasant stay. Good breakfast
Parking is tight. Fans in room but still very cosy on a hot night.
Staff were helpful and breakfast was good. Great location for our stay.
The rooms were quite tight and extremely warm (although it was a very hot evening). Parking is tight.
Right in the heart of St Albans and such a lovely old building. Parking in the back via a tight entrance but lots of fun walking through the place
Nothing - if you want a new holiday inn then book there, this is a historical building
Staff nice, good parking, quaint property
Ridiculously hot, no respite from the heat with cheap inadequate fans and small windows. Sinks in the bedroom are weird and the bathrooms are pretty awful. Like staying in a haunted house from the fair.
Female staff were friendly and helpful, who changed our room for the second night. The second room was 200% better than the first room.
The first given was in need of a total refurbishment. The shower didn't work properly and needed cleaning. The Pillows were very old and tatty. Window frames in need of cleaning. Both sink and wc blocked. Chose to stay at another hotel on the 3rd night, only received a partial refund.
Unique accommodation in the heart of ancient St Albans was exactly what we were looking for. While the property has the interesting quirks expected of a 700 year old building, the room itself was clean, bathroom updated, bed comfortable. Yes the ceilings are crooked with odd steps here and there, low doors and creaky floors, it was a perfect stop over. To add there is free on site parking, the restaurant served fine fish n chips, cold drinks from the bar and excellent service from all staff, especially one lovely caring superstar at reception who most kindly contributed a heap of her time to help us sort out a lost bag at the airport.
A little hot that night with no air con but thank you for the fan.
Feedback from husband who travelled alone as I was unable to join him due to arrival of grandchild. All aspects good apart from staff.
Reception not clearly marked so went to bar on arrival where waiting 10-15mins for attention, no apology for delay.
Need new bed mattresses
Comfortable beds, and good food and drinks inside an historic building that you might pay an entry fee just to see inside. Right by St. Alban’s Cathedral too so great location for us!
The weather was quite hot the night we stayed, and so was our room.
Location, history of building, nice staff
Room was extremely hot, weather was very hot to be fair
Breakfast was great - ate there every day! My room (#5) was adequate. It should only be sold as a single room. The double bed took up all of the floor space. Location was perfect. I sang with a choir at the Cathedral every day!
The water ran in the toilet all week. They need to fix that. The hotel has some charm but needs restoration.
Quirkiness due to age
Sloping floors, tiny unusable shower and toilet and decor ( lime green bedroom!!!)
Found this little gem as a stop gap on the way to Devon. The friendly atmosphere and welcoming locals set the scene. The bar staff are great and helpful and enjoyed a chat. The room was clean, the bedding was crisp and the shower functioned as expected, reason being that I normally have dramas with these contraptions!
Staff chatting outside at 6:30am and moving bins about.
Handy location
It was awful, no hot water and the sink was blocked. The room was boiling hot and the window was broken. The furnishings were like student accommodation
The Location is good if you want to visit places. However, it is in the high street, and being an old building, insulation form the road is bad.
The room offered very little value for money. I booked a superior room with an extra sofa bed, even if it was the two of us only as we were travelling with our dog. The room was of a good size but the matressess of the bed were horrificaly uncomfortable and quite old. The whole place looked as if their are trying but is tired and could do with tlc. The carpet of the stairs looked very dirty. They charge £25 for the dog but I am not sure if their excuse if for any extra cleaning or what. In other higher standard hotels we have paid less for the dog and got at least a couple of bowls for watter. Not a chance here , even if I asked for it. They will lend me a bowl for my dog to drink water at the bar, but could not take it to the room.
Lovely room, fantastic staff and overall fantastic value!
Location, character
Great location opposite Cathedral, old coaching inn so interesting building.
Rather noisy on a Saturday night with drinks up and down the street, but outside hotel’s control I know.
close to centre. Olde world, authentic
Lovely old inn, friendly staff, clean and functional room, enjoyable breakfast.
I have no complaints whatsoever, constructively, the bedroom furnishings could do with a little updating.
It is very convenient and charming. It is also excellent value. The breakfast was very good. The staff are helpful. The 725 bus from Heathrow Airport stops right opposite. Cost: 3 pounds each way.
It is a very old property with all the quirks including low beams, sloping floors, and windows that won’t open. However my tiny bathroom had recently been remodeled with state of the art fixtures. Much depends on the assigned room.
The breakfast is good. The rooms are "character" rooms as would be expected in an old property.
I was aware I was taking the cheapest room, so the bathroom being a bit basic was anticipated. The parking time in the car park could be more generous.
Ideally situated. Lovely building
Could of done with a few more plug sockets(but I do appreciate it's old building) Shower screen could of done with a clean Bed was uncomfortable
Very clean tidy and friendly
A little pricy
Friendly, efficient staff, wonderful building, and all round excellent. We drank in the bar with friends who joined us for the evening and the ambience was superb, and the bar itself comfortable. Breakfast was generous (actually much better than the photographs on their own website - which is very odd) and freshly cooked, not - as so often - pre-cooked and kept warmer under a heat lamp. The room was comfortable and spacious (and yay! used a key not a card!) witha very comfortable bed. Nicely positioned 5 minutes from teh City Centre and 2 minutes from the Cathedral Nice historical connection with the last Jacobite Rebellion as well.
Bed was comfy. Nice big room
Window didn't stay open .sink needs tlc.
Very cozy and interesting place. Historically well maintained. This place is an experience. Furthermore the staff was welcoming.
-
Lovely building, spacious and comfortable room, clean bathroom. Staff was lovely and very helpful, especially the evening bar staff. Parking is included in the price. We had no breakfast but enjoyed a light lunch which was delicious. The location is perfect, right by the Cathedral.
Waiting time for the lunch was longer than expected.
Central location & opposite Cathedral Historic charm Pleasant staff
Not surprising that a 600 year old inn doesnt have airconditioning. Never thought we would need it when we made the reservation some months ago! At least a fan was provided, but we had to chock the window open to get some airflow!
Location
If your looking for old school hotel experience with great friendly staff, this hotel is ideal.. Breakfast in the morning was included and was delicious...
Beds could do with an upgrade...
Gorgeous historic building. Great offerings at breakfast. Arranged early check-in for us. Clean and comfortable.
Parking is limited but we knew that beforehand. Hot in room (very old listed building) and some noise from bar below. Room facilities a little dated.
Quaint hotel with loads of character - everything in our room was on an angle and some low ceilings, which was fun and expected given the age of the building. Excellent location to the sites that we wanted to visit in St. Albans. Friendly staff, and yummy full English breakfast.
Our room was very warm, but not your fault. We did appreciate the fan - thank you!
Convenient for our visit to St Albans for our ringing weekend.
World Cup noise outside the window and within the property. Inadequate cooling in the room.
The amazing history
There was nothing I didn’t like
Excellent breakfast, good choice-
-
Wonderfully quirky and historical and a really excellent location.
The road it was on was a little noisy.
Location and history of building Staff friendly
Room very hot and window wouldn’t stay open. Bathroom lovely and new but loo not cleaned properly. Carpets need good clean, socks very dirty after walking around room without shoes. No hot water, called downstairs and they said they’d switched it on but in the morning there was no hot water again. Carpets on stairways looked very dirty
The location is great - the hotel is just next to the St Albans Cathedral. It’s an old hotel with a character and, apparently, with some ghosts! My bed was very comfortable- I slept like a log. Staff at the reception/bar were very friendly.
As I checked in to my room, I saw that, apart from bed being made, the room hasn’t been cleaned. There were heaps of rubbish under the bed, the floor was dusty and the bathroom looked used. As I mentioned that to the receptionist, she quickly cleaned the room herself. I stayed 4 nights and apart from making bed and taking out the bin, the cleaner didn’t do anything. Also, the fan in the room looks like it’s 600 years old as well.
The history of the tge building
The rooms was absolutely bog standard nothing special at all . And expensive .
Location
Evetything
The only thing good about this hotel is the location. Beds were awful. Did not sleep well at all. Reception manager was very rude. Will never visit this hotel again!!! Stay away
Room: large but basic Breakfast - did not have any Location perfect for Abbey wedding
Cleanliness Sofa bed in room heavilly stained Struggled with shower in bath Decor dated and worn Car-Parking was limited
Great location, pleasant staff who were very helpful. Excellent breakfast
There was free parking, but it can get quite tight if it is full.
Historical property. Good location in town. Nice staff.
No A/C so a no go on warm days.
Nice old hotel. As it is old; the rooms and passage ways are quirky with slanted ceilings and floors. Excellent location on high street.
The car park is small and hard to manoeuvre.
Staying in such an old interesting hotel was amazing! Location was great! Walking distance to everything. Parking onsite was free. Fabio, checked us in and was very helpful, helping us get onto the wifi etc.
Nothing
Great location
Tiny shower/bathroom and very small opening window. Road noise
Parking a challenge, but otherwise a great location for us.
Poor lighting inbthe room
This is a very quirky property and had very good staff and service
Nothing really. Just need to be mindful that it is an old property and not for everyone.
Staff were brilliant & very helpful 👏
Goed hotel, keurige kamer
very central location; helpful staff
Location of the hotel is excellent. Opposite the Cathedral where I was attending a wedding.
The room was basic and the bathroom so small it was impossible for me to manage a proper shower. The room wasn’t very clean, dirty skirting boards, strange smell and chipped mugs. The price for the room was expensive for single occupancy and breakfast was extra.
Location and closeness to the cathedral
The furnishings in the room were worn and dated and the cleanliness was poor
Its ancientness.
The food was expensive
The vibe of the hotel was lovely, really quaint and some lovely features. The front bar is cosy and interesting pictures to see about the buildings history. The restaurant is a lovely panelled room, light and tastefully decorated. The fish and chips were lovely and a large portion. The breakfast choice was great but not everything available. The location is excellent and parking a bonus. A lovely welcome too.
The bed wasn't very comfy. The en suite wasn't great, clean but I didn't like the basin being in the bedroom and not the ensuite. I understand its an old building and is probably the only way it configures. The traffic noise was constant. I prefer a fruit salad at breakfast rather than a bowl of tired fruit. I felt £12.50 for a bloody Mary was pricey, I'm unsure when a vodka and tomato juice became a cocktail.
What a lovely hotel and bar. The staff were really helpful. Very impressed with the quality of the food. Would definitely stay again.
