Excellent location overlooking the Sea, a little remote but a great way to experience Nelson.
Parautane Lodge is a lovely, clean and welcoming accommodation. The sunsets from the room, balcony and patios were outstanding. The bed was extremely comfortable and the breakfasts delicious. Both Anthony and Allan were more than happy to share ‘must sees/dos in the area. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this spacious accommodation.
We purposefully chose to be out of town for the tranquility which may not be for everyone. (It’s so worth it!) The road up is windy and some of it unpaved but again worth the effort for sure.
Spacious rooms, relaxed atmosphere, lovely breakfast area and food. Beautiful views and friendly hosts. Access to a lovely hot pool.
Our room smelt a little fusty
Stunning views, lovely, friendly accommodating hosts! Very comfy beds, and very nice breakfast each morning :)
Nothing - the road leading up to it is gravel and steep in places, but was absolutely fine in our hire car. My relatives managed with driving their campervan up also, and it was worth it for the beautiful view!
The views beautiful, however from the garden room it was difficult to fully appreciate them. The hosts went above and beyond to accommodate us.
First impressions were mixed as the entry steps needed a bit of love. We felt there was a lack of comfortable seating both indoors and outdoors. No option for evening meal. This meant we had to travel to town for meals everyday.
Anthony was a delightful host cooking the most delicious breakfast each morning and going beyond the call of duty to make our stay amazing. The 180 degree views of the Tasman Bay were superb and the bed was pure luxury.
Great views, friendly owner, nice breakfast, awesome shower, dark very quiet room resulting in fabulous sleep.
Car park is a long way from the lodge but the owner did help us with our bags which we appreciated.
Yes it is a bit of a drive up a hill but worth it, the views amazing, the bed so comfy and the breakfast made for you every day exceptional, eggs how you like them with bacon etc and home made bread. The owners friendly and very helpful.
Very comfortable bed Wonderful view Helpful host Superb breakfast
Long steep drive to property up gravel track 30 minute drive from Nelson Access to property down a lot of steps - not suitable if you have mobility issues You cannot use the kitchen - property only suitable for take away food in the evening
Beautiful location, great staff, incredible view, breakfast cooked to order. Big room!
Access road was a bit challenging
Gutes Frühstück. Exponierte Lage mit toller Aussicht. Service war toll.
Friendly and helpful service Great Views Delicious breakfast
The driveway was a bit tricky getting up but worth it.
Amazing view, great stuff, comfortable
Tolle Aussicht. Sehr ruhig.
Facilities Stunning view Helpful staff
No complaints
Fabulous view over the bay. Very comfortable rooms and the photos on booking.com do not do it justice!

Wow, the view is fabulous and our room -the Harris room was huge with a balcony looking over the bay. The sunset was amazing. A very comfortable bed and large bathroom. The jacuzzi has amazing views and robes are provided and towels. Our hosts were very helpful and made an exceptionally good cooked breakfast. Ideally bring your own supplies as there is a BBQ and fridge.
The road to the lodge is steep and unsealed for two kms. The lodge is a little dated but actually adds to it's charm.
Traumhafte Aussicht
Hospitality, the view, comfy beds!
Not too much you couldnt like
Breakfast was excellent, host went beyond expectations to do a packed breakfast to take with us on our early morning start for an Abel Tasman trip . Upon reaching house view was fantastic.
Description stated Barbecue available but no facilities or crockery/utensils that was obvious for us ito use and journey up private driveway was challenging in steepness and narrownes.
Insane views, awesome spa pool and loved that there was only a few rooms so felt secluded
Absolutely outstanding The property and location are amazing with wonderful hosts and amazing views Room was outstanding Highly recommended
Great breakfast with ocean view. Very clean bed
Nothing
Fabulous location
The drive!!!
The hotel wrongly charged us an amount for a reservation we did not make and refused to refund us.
Beautiful location, pristine rooms and wonderful hosts! Breakfast was terrific!
Great location, overlooking the beautiful landscape from above. The host was absolutely charming and welcoming. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, served on a central table facing the view. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet other guests and share travel experiences. Highly recommended!
Please note that the road leading to the hotel is quite narrow and steep, but the view is worth it.
Lage
Exceptional views and hospitality
The owner/managers of this property were lovely people, very friendly and tried to be helpful where possible. The breakfast was quite nice but their dog sat under the table begging for food most of the time. Not ideal !
The property sounds more like a 5 star hotel on the listing but it is actually a very expensive B and B. It is about a 20 minute drive from Nelson CBD. There is about 1 km of very dusty gravel road to get up hill to the lodge ( you will probably need to wash your car afterwards !) There are about 10 steps to carry your luggage down to the room which faced west with a sideways view to the ocean. The owners advise they will help with the luggage but they were not there to greet us and left a key for us to open up ourselves. (They did help us with the luggage when we left, on request.) The room was not particularly clean and there were spiders and daddy long-legs around in the corners. The balcony needed sweeping of leaves and dirt. The west facing windows were quite dirty with with the afternoon sun on them. (suggestion- some see-through blinds would be good to keep the afternoon sun from roasting the room.) There were no tissues supplied (until we asked). The cupboard door hinges needed oiling badly as they squeaked. The kettle was plugged into a loose power board which hung down under a wooden tray mounted on a trestle...not exactly 5 star ! The whole property is sadly in need of maintenance (e.g. outdoor light fitting hanging down on wires). Some of the decking looks quite weathered and will need replacing soon. Also, we thought it was unnecessary to charge $45 for a bottle of red wine in the mini-bar and the supplies of tea and instant coffee in the room were really quite meagre. ( how about a coffee pod machine ! ) We were in NZ for 12 days staying in 4 and 5 star hotels , but this property was the most expensive by far !
A beautiful room with fantastic views A great host A very enjoyable breakfast .
A very steep road to access to the property
Allen was very helpful and welcoming. Great HOST!!!
Has steps, but host helped with luggage so no worries.
Great location and space
The views are beautiful
Amazing house, would not be suprised to see if on grand designs
The location and views from the property were beautiful. The breakfast was excellent, all cooked by the owner and it was delicious. The dining room with the table set fro breakfast was stunning.
Nothing. It was all first class. The lane up to the property was a little scary, but well worth the effort, and the second time up was fine. Once up, the views were spectacular.
Stunning views, very cozy bed and lovely breakfast. Nice spa overlooking the ocean and bushland.
Wonderful hospitality, beautiful surroundings, away from city.
Nothing
The views were as expected and the studio very large and clean.
For his/her own reasons, the owner/manager was absent and they left two young girls in charge. I have to stress here that I'm not criticising them because they were obviously doing the best that they could, or were trained to do. In my opinion they were not trained enough to confidently take charge and address potential or actual issues without having to get back to the owner. This takes time which was frustrating for my wife and me. They were also the cooks and while breakfast was adequate, we got the impression that what was displayed was the minimum needed for that day. On the first morning it wasn't announced that brekky could be cooked (bacon, eggs etc) until after I'd chosen the quantity of cereal I wanted based on my incorrect understanding that cereal was all that was available. The coffee was instant, not ground. Our internet connection packed up on Sunday and at 9.00 pm we were informed that it couldn't be fixed until Monday after we had gone. We were offered another room or a free bottle of Merlot, and while their offer was greatly appreciated, we decided against both. Again, referring to the absence of the owner - if it was due to an "emergency" type situation, all well and good, but if it was so the owner could take a break, then in my opinion, he/she should have closed shop and foregone the revenue.
The room and the bed were excellent. They were very good about serving breakfast a bit earlier.
Spa was not well maintained. Can only get there by car and road steep.
Very helpful owner, comfortable beds, tasty breakfast and amazing views

The hotel is in a fabulous location. It's a little bit scary arriving at night because it's tucked away, but the views in the morning were spectacular. The room was spacious and the owner could not have been more accommodating. A lovely overnight stay.
Excellent breakfast. Superb view. Really comfortable bed!
We feel there should be a refrigerator in every guest room. Guest parking not ideal. Several steps to negotiate from car park to accommodation. The road to the property was somewhat challenging and should probably be avoided in the dark.
The room was spacious. The bed was very comfortable, and the views from the property were amazing.
No complaints from me. All good.
Underfloor heating, bed, location. Breakfast
The attention to details of the maintenance is poor.
The spa was magic
The tv was a bit lacking in options
Great hotel with amazing view. Room is very spacious and comfortable. Bed is super comfy, underfloor heating in showerroom, which is good touch. Breakfast is very well cooked. The night is beautiful, can hear nothing except nature. Watching star from the patio is amazing.
Nothing
The location is just breathtaking. The view over the mountains and the ocean is fantastic. The owner Alan was super friendly and attentive and took care of all our needs.
Very hospitable, helpful hosts. Great views, great breakfast!
The location and the spectacular view. The hot tub was a treat. The breakfast was excellent.
Very steep drive
Great breakfast and great welcome
Stunning views and excellent hosts
Parking access to transfer luggage
Everything! The view is amazing, the beds are comfy and the hosts are fantastic.
Was the perfect way to end our vacation. Candace was lovely, the property was spectacular and the breakfast was so yummy and homey. We felt very comfortable and would definitely recommend.
Fantastic stay just 20min from Nelson city centre, with an unforgettable view of the bay. Our room was directly on the huge wooden patio. Very comfortable bed, clean room with all the amenities. Great host with lots of advice. I highly recommend it.
The street to the property is indeed steep but anyone who knows how to drive can manage that. No bumps when we used it.
Stunning views with very friendly and welcoming host.
Quaint and felt the owners did a great job of making us feel welcome
Well maintained
The view was good
No fridge in the room, with 3 of the 4 units were meant to share a small fridge, along with the owners beer and wine (for purchase by the guests should they choose). Perhaps a larger fridge in the dining area or a small fridge in each room. Better option to take luggage down and up steep stairs, perhaps guests could use the owners driveway just to initially load and unload baggage only. It appears the house accommodation needs care and tlc.
We loved the view, the spa and the hospitality fantastic place to relax and take in the landscape
The view from the patio/bedroom window is awesome. The bed was supremely comfortable. The bathroom was superb. Breakfast was pretty good.
It’s pretty remote, there was no welcome and the outside is very scruffy - so you’re starting to feel a bit concerned given it’s at the expensive end of the spectrum for B&B accommodation. Plus, little things are missing - no tissues, no comfy chairs in the large room, just a couple of tea and coffee bags. And $7 for a small beer and over $40 for a bottle of local wine! Most places at this price would throw a bottle in.
The temporary hosts, Tim and Lorna, were very accommodating and helpful. The huge wooden deck was a great place to relax and dry laundry. The views were spectacular! Loved the big sit down dining table at breakfast time. Breakfasts were yummy - Tim even fried some tomatoes to go with my eggs one morning. Outstanding privacy - I barely bumped into other guests. The spa tub was awesome - I needed that after all my mountaineering aches and pains.
Nothing really - it was lovely. However, there were two things out of the control of the hosts that I will mention. One night the rain set in, and with it came very low cloud cover that was so thick I had a lot of difficulty navigating up the very narrow and winding road to their hilltop location. It was actually very frightening in the dark as it was a dirt road with no lights. The second issue was the gigantic ditch in front of their driveway. It was extremely deep as I drove off the main road up into their driveway. I was afraid of scraping the underbelly of my rental vehicle.
We booked for three days at the Parautane Lodge following the very positive comments on Tripadvisor. We were however very disappointed with our stay. The Lodge has undoubtedly beautiful views on the bay but this is its only asset. Access to the place is not easy: the last section of the road to the lodge is bumpy, unsealed and quite difficult, making the 10 minutes drive from Nelson problematic. Considering the price, the rooms and the breakfast are average. More importantly, our room was never serviced during the three days we stayed there. Before leaving, we asked the manager whether this was the lodge normal policy. He told us that we should have asked for service by putting out a notice which was supposed to be in our room. We indicated that nobody had informed us of this policy. We also checked with him and could not find any notice in our room. His apologies were not very convincing and only concerned the lack of the notice in the room. I find it unacceptable that, in a lodge that calls itself a "Luxury” Lodge, rooms are not automatically cleaned. In conclusion, I do not recommend the place. Its price is totally unjustified considering its level (lack of) of service, difficulty of access, average level of rooms and breakfast.
Great view, quiet and good size room
No bathrobes as described, no milk and we couldn't see any smoke alarms I knew it was going to be 1.5km on a gravel road but it wasn't enjoyable and the car was struggling
Great breakfast and location
Outdoor couches, New bbq
Great location, friendly staff. The views were fantastic.
Carpet in the room was old and damaged
The room was absolutely amazing, bed was super comfortable. The owners were so friendly and the breakfast was a wonderful surprise
Great views from the Harris suite. The room was really lovely and spacious. We really liked the private decking area. The host was really friendly and helpful, and provided breakfast early so that we could check out early. Would have loved to have stayed longer.
