Clean and tidy with sufficient facilities and easy taxi ride from the station.
Walls paper thin so you hear people next door and outside arriving home in cars and talking outside. The bed creaks every time you move so had a sleepless night. Arrived at 10:50pm after a long journey to check in and found the staff quite rude. Felt like I had inconvenienced them by asking if I could check in as they were clocking off at 11.
That it had space for us. Staff were nice. Plates were hot a breakfast.
Just old fashioned. Needs a premier inn style refurbishment.
The ease of getting into Durham.
The room was noisy. We were facing the road and heard every car that drove past all night long. No curtains in our room (56) so we were reliant on blinds and one didn’t close all the way so the bright light right under our window shone into our room all night long.
Lovely friendly staff and homely feel
Couldn’t work out the shower
Too dear for what you get rooms need a overhaul
Good
Location was great. Breakfast staff were very helpful
Our Meal on Sunday night was very poor, the Chips were black! and the peas were hard! I would certainly not recommend eating there. On reflection, I don't think we should not have accepted the meal and sent it back.
Staff and food are good
There was bits missing off a mirror big hole in bottom of the door 1st ever had a problem here I think from 31 needs a update spider and muck behind the loo
Staff were friendly Food was lovely Close to Durham Rooms ok
Noisy road Thin walls so could hear noisy neighbours No fans in room
Breakfast was excellent. Unfortunately the family room was not available so we were split in 2 rooms. However we did appreciate the effort they made to fix the problem and we were given a complimentary breakfast.
Bit noisy being on the road and rooms open direct onto car park so it had more of a motel feel. But I would stay again as the location was good and rooms comfortable.
The room was nice clean and comfortable.
No towels in the room when we arrived. We had to go to reception to ask for them. Staff brought us some towels within minutes. Breakfast : There is a real issue with coffee. Staff need training. Coffee was really watery. We complained about it and the waiter brought us new coffee but again really light. Also no viennoiseries on offer for breakfast. Not everyone wants a full English Breakfast and having viennoiseries is standard in most hotels. Food. Very disappointing. Ate previously in the restaurant and the food was fine. On this occasion the food was not up to standard. It is disappointing as there is some good local products that could be used to prepare pub style food.
Where it was, good parking, breakfast very good
Bed was to soft and to small
The bar and restaurant was good
The room was very tired
The hotel was very easy to find. Very friendly staff, let us into our room early so we could use the bus into Durham City centre. The rooms were not in the hotel, but arranged, chalet-like behind the hotel. We were able to park our car right outside our room. Our room was quiet, overlooking a field and some woods which was nice. It was quite basic, but for less than £100 we had no complaints. Breakfast was okay, hot food cooked to order, the rest was basic, but as I said, for the money it was adequate.
If I'm being picky, the bathroom could have been a bit cleaner, panels on the door and skirting were dusty.
Kettle in the room
It was supposed to be a double bed, but actually was 1.5, just slightly bigger than single, so there was not enough space for both of us. Also, the room was quite worn, some urgent refurb is required. Certainly not worth the money they're asking for it.
Nice and cosy
On the road with traffic all night, windows dirty, couldn't order breakfast in the morning. Plus room with a view was also the main road. And the guy in reception was from a horror movie and kept staring
Food and service was good staff friendly room clean and tidy
Just need but of paint and fresh up the room
Breakfast was ok
Traffic noise.. two wedding bookings ...given priority ....dogs in Restaurant....
Perfect location, beautiful scenery from room
Bar was closed early
Staff warm and welcoming. Breakfast spot on. Liked the fact the rooms away from main building. There was a wedding on but no noise heard.shower lovely and hot.
Room decor could do with repair. Bathroom especially. Skirting dirty so could do with a deep clean.
The location worked very well. The bar facilities were good, and parking easy
Whilst the bathroom didn’t look unclean, it had a musty smell which was off-putting
Lovely staff, great food. Very convenient location.
Not a lot.
room and restaurant dirty. Management on shift on Sunday afternoon not very help full, lack of interest when asked about staying an extra day. So i didn't book another night.
Breakfast was fine, until a coach party arrived then it was apparent there were too few staff. The room was ok, apart from a really noisy bed, possibly due to a broken frame, and the bathroom was cramped but the room wasn’t expensive so we didn’t expect too much from it. The food was good, huge portions and very reasonably priced and the location was great, very close to the park and ride and the A1.
Well located for Durham city
Very comfortable bed. Housekeeping staff excellent attitude to guests.
Room 35 : TV remote not working - no batteries !!. First replacement set already defunct. Accompanied by worker, agreed still not working. Second set sorted the issue. Bathroom sink plug jammed open. Took handyman an hour to sort the issue, explained a replacement needed to be ordered, but had managed a temporary solution. Multiple areas of damage to bathroom door, plasterwork, Ceiling entry of TV power/arial left as large unfinished hole. A disappointing place to spend my 76th birthday, although time with my daughter raised my spirits above this.
Nice
Really nice staff. Reception staff and cleaners were so nice, couldn’t do enough for you.
The rooms were clean, but very dated and in desperate need of refurbishment. There was a noticeable damp smell, and although the bathroom was clean, there were black marks in the bath and a shower curtain that’s seen a decade. We paid £116 for a twin room, room only, for one night, and unfortunately it just wasn’t worth the money. For the condition of the room, I wouldn’t have expected to pay even £50. The hotel needs refurbishment.
The location and the size of the room
The food was not good quality The mattress was lumpy and gave back ache
Cheap, basic rooms.
Road noise as I am a very light sleeper.
Suzanne was excellent, totally made our stay and she was incredibly helpful
The girl in the restaurant was very friendly and helpful .
Hunting us down about a meal they had served us the night before. Wouldn’t mind if we were just calling in for lunch but we were staying for 2 nights. Like we were going to leave and leave all our clothes just so we could get a free meal and drink. Really !!!!!!! . The tables outside were never washed even though people were eating outside. No decking was swept very dirty and you had a wedding ceremony booked. Wouldn’t like to see the colour of the brides dress if she went outside with guest’s. My partner got his new top pulled by bushes not cut back . Will not be returning.
A big thing for me was not needing id because I don't have none
Food was great. Reception was welcoming and helpful
Food service from the staff was poor, she wasn't interested in what she was carrying and moaned that customers were helping themselves to fruit..... After paying £12 per person for breakfast I think we are permitted to have a plum or apple. Rooms smelt damp, bathrooms not properly cleaned. It looked like someone just quickly mopped and put in new towels
Location and friendly staff
The noises the bed made when you moved
The walks
Nothing
Room facilities were adequate, bath with very hot water, good towels. Plenty of sachet beverages and quality biscuits.
Room 45 in corner against shrubbery. Appeared dark and gloomy and lighting was inadequate.
The staff at this hotel were exceptional. Friendly, helpful and went out of their way to ensure that we had a good stay.
Nothing.
clean bedding , large TV and convenient parking
Room in need of updating , very basic . bathroom had black mold , rotten wood at base of bash side, tap on basin twisted and poorly fitted, single light switch by bed did not work and reading light on the other side did not work.
Although very good value for money, the room looked tired especially the bathroom. It was very clean and friendly staff. Even though we would stay again as it's convenient for visiting family and friends it would benefit by being spruced up a little bit.
The bathroom looked tired and dated.
staff and breakfast were great.
sleep quality due to small double bed.
It was lovely and clean, everyone was so helpful and breakfast was amazing
Nothing
Food was served in good time, piping hot and very tasty.
The Manager of the hotel who was on duty was outstanding. He was cheerful, he worked under full pressure getting a wedding ready and also serving us customers arriving. The staff were all attentive and pleasant and I couldn't fault them.
There is nothing I didn't like as such. I was supposed to be staying there with my wife for 2 nights to attend a wedding on site, but she became ill and couldn't come. So on my own the size of the room was ok, but if it were the two of us it would have been a bit tight.
Convenient for our one night stay as we were travelling Excellent restaurant ample proportions
Bath too high to get into for my wife Room noisy due to being next to boiler/ maintenance room
Room was clean and comfortable but very warm. Plenty of parking.
We had booked multiple rooms which I had organised and wanted to pay for. Various members of my party arrived before me and were made to pay for their rooms before they were given a key, despite my having used a credit card to secure the booking. Breakfast was poorly cooked and disorganised - we waited over 40 minutes for our hot food to reach us and when it arrived the eggs were hard, but we couldn't afford the time to send them back.
Manager willingness to satisfy us.
Karaoke night. A bit loud after 22 until 23. It use to be a pub.
The location is excellent for driving up to Durham and being able to easily get into the city. The staff were great and food in the pub was too. The room was comfy and clean.
Although clean the room was tired in places. We were there during one of the heatwaves and there was no air conditioning.
Excellent value for money .
Room was spacious, quiet and very clean. Staff were very friendly.
The Wi-Fi was very intermittent.
The hotel is located a short drive from Durham city. The rooms are located around the edge of the car park behind the pub and overlook fields. The room was clean and comfortable with an en-suite bathroom, TV and kettle.
There was nothing we didn’t like. Breakfast was served in the bar of the pub and our dogs were allowed in while we were eating. We were able to park right next to the door of our room which was very convenient for loading and unloading the car.
Good if travelling with dogs. Walk into room off carpark (motel style, for er stables?) Good value. Nice local walks behind hotel. Convenient for Durham City if you have a car - it’s just a short drive away.
Basic pub. Everything fine, but not special.
Close to the a1
Curtains not black out
Warm welcoming staff. Did their best to provide a good service.
The location is excellent for my needs, I like having my own front door to the room.
It’s a little tired in places.
Lovely main building and bar. Nice, polite staff. Very nice outside areas. Room very clean.
Awful bed, like sleeping on York cobblestone. Mattress absolutely worn out. Whole bed frame creaky needs replacing. Bathroom smelly even though clean.
The location, close enough to Durham to take taxis
Dinner menu is a little restricted.
Easy check in and can park outside room. Room had everything required for a one night stay
The fire alarm going off at 6am that woke myself up! Also no air con or fans provided in the extreme heat
Q good vslue stop-over. Good breakfast
No complaints
Clean, easy to park and access to restaurant. Short drive to tge city.
I have stayed at the Honest Lawyer many times, it is my first choice when I am in the area.

Well situated for access to Durham and surrounding area as on a bus route and not far from a park & ride. Plenty of free parking at the hotel. Our room, 54, was large, with storage space. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order. Good walking locally near to the R. Wear.
The room was very warm as it was over the kitchens, and somewhat affected by the large extractor vents on the flat roof outside windows.
Good location and friendly staff.
Decor shabby, carpets need replacing. Rooms need redecorating.
Good value, good location. Helpful staff at check-in and for cleaning
The bar staff were a little…direct. It is a bit dated but that is reflected in the price
An ideal location for our stay after attending a Wedding in Northumberland, enjoying so much we actually stayed four nights. All the staff, from the reception, bar, restaurant and cleaners were excellent, their care, compassion and concern for our wellbeing was most comforting. The quality and generous portions of food was most enjoyable and the glass of local beer rather nice. The parking outside our room was a bonus. We shall be back !!
There was absolutely nothing that we did not like
Location
Black mould in the en-suite bathroom! No air conditioning Noisy toilet when flushing When I checked in I was told breakfast started from 7am the next day and we needed to eat early for our Saturday schedule but when we reached restaurant at 7:30 was told by staff it was actually 8am start for breakfast on Sat 🤦♀️which it did say on room info but I had not checked this as lady on reception had told me it was 7am. When I mentioned to staff member on check out that I had paid for breakfast in advance but we didn’t have it as had to leave early he simply said - ok! I think a nice gesture would have been to offer a refund for this as it was very inconvenient to have to get breakfast elsewhere and I obviously had to pay for it elsewhere so effectively paid twice!
Very clean room, comfortable bed, excellent shower.
A ground floor room meant we could only have the window open a crack so it was a bit stuffy in the summer heat.
We had a ground floor room in the large annex block where each room had an individual parking place outside the door. The hotel was very easy to find and a five minute drive to the Park & Ride into Durham
Perhaps the plumbing could be updated
We also stayed later in he week after stopping at the Hotel on route to a wedding in North Northumberland. See review for stay 25th to 29th June
Absolutely nothing NOT to like !!!
Room very nice, single level overlooking fields. Breakfast very good. All staff very freindly
Bar keeping open a little longer
Ability to park outside my room, although that did give it a 'motel' vibe.
Hotel is tired and needs refurbishment. Flaking paint etc. I don't necessarily expect hotels for have aircon, but a fan in the bedroom would have been useful in this hot conditions. I thought it was too expensive for a hotel of this quality.
Great location to where we needed to be. Pub was nice, food food and staff were very friendly.
We had room 35, you couldn’t stand under the shower as the water was scolding hot, no cold water coming through. We did report to reception and the maintenance guy came round he said to keep shower higher up and might get alittle cooler but this didn’t work. I think the mixer tap needs to be changed.
Friendly staff, spacious room, comfortable beds.
Continental breakfast was a bit light on options for my daughter (she didn't use the cooked breakfast option. Just toast and ceraeal no pastries, berries, melon etc.
Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Comfortable, clean room although we couldn't seem to find the TV remote
A little attention to grout around bath is needed as some black spots.
Such friendly staff, nice comfortable rooms and a good varied breakfast
We had no cold water in the wash basin tap. The bath tap was fine
Good location Motel style parking at your door.
Small room Thin carpeting on concrete Black mould in ensuite
Easy to get toDurham on bus
Getting a bit dated
This is a very good value option close to Durham and the people who work here are all unfailingly helpful and really nice. Breakfast is excellent and parking is plentiful and free.
Love staying here, we’ve been regulars for a few yrs on & off, lovely staff, rooms are suitable! Ample parking facilities, learned this stay it’s dog friendly too which is fab! Good food, always relaxed atmosphere!
The room we had this time was right in the corner end (41), very dark, no outlook. We prefer the big field view at the back! But, the rooms are clean & very suitable size wise & have everything you need!
We had a light dinner which was great. The breakfast was also good. Staff extremely friendly. Well situated for both the City (although we took a taxi on Saturday evening) and the motorway.
The cold water was running hot during the afternoon so we had to request either bottled water or a jug of water (it was hot and hydration was really essential). The rooms are a bit "tired" - bathroom needs an upgrade and the pillows are cheap and not very comfortable. A fan for hot weather might be a good idea for the future.
Staff very friendly and I was able to accommodate my dog. Parking right outside the room also a bonus
It's a little run down but it's really as expected for the price.
Had to wait nearly an hour for food which was only sandwiches but this happened last time we were there also.
We like the property, we often stay here when we visit Spennymoor.
We like every room we’ve stayed over in
De ligging van het hotel dicht bij bushalte prima uitvalsbasis, wij waren op de moter.
Hou oud het was ,vergaande glorie.
Clean comfortable and convenient location. Good food in the evening and an excellent breakfast
Not a lot
Close to where I needed to be
Bedding was dreadful old hard pillows. Very dated and poor condition. The breakfast was revolting, garden chairs all broken and tables didn’t look like they had been cleaned this year. Ridiculously overpriced
Great value for money, lovely view and nice wholesome food.
No reading light
Convenient location for visiting kids at Durham university
Small double bed, no fridge in the room, bathroom tired
Good location for visiting Durham, plenty of parking available. Good sized room which was clean and had everything needed.
room security could be better. as its a ground floor property that opens out onto courtyard the door lock did not feel sufficient
The food was nice and staff were amazing
The fact there were people to be aloud to be shouting from 12 til 230 am and was knocking doors then shouting there dog because the let it go and lost it .
Lovely view over open countryside. Nice welcome. Very quiet room..located on our route. Plenty of free parking. Would stay again if on this route.
Outside paint rather tatty. Bathroom a bit tired.
Always a pleasure to stay at the Honest Lawyer

Good facilities, friendly staff - and an easy bus journey into Durham ( bus stops just outside the Hotel).

Very god for durham city center
The staff were very pleasent
It was certainly not the room I booked and it should not be advertised as a hotel as it is clearly a motel I cut my stay short very dissappointed
Everything! Great location. In the country but only a six minute drive to the centre of Durham. Loved the courtyard rooms where you could park right at the door. Dog friendly. Nice restaurant with excellent food at reasonable prices. Friendly helpful staff. And topped off by a comfortable beer garden where food and drinks are served. Highly recommended
Nothing
Lovely staff good food and drinks
It was all fine
