Staff, cleanliness, character, breakfast.
Dinner: had a steak Longhorn beef ,not the best, overpriced . No itemised bill for dinner at the time of checkout.
Very spacious room, with an extremlly comfortale bath. The cooked breakfast was fantastic. Great portion sizes, tasty and lovely choices. The bar / reception had a wonderful selection of whiskies which was appreciated and was a relaxing place to hang out have a drink, and read a little.
Personally, a great deal of my morning, and especially on holidays, has to do with the first cup of coffee. The cafetiere coffee was really watery and I would have liked to have the options of coffee from a machine (with warm / frothy milk). The room we stayed in was quite dark and humid - bathing suits did not dry in 2 days.
The welcome was lovely and friendly. Welcome drink was a very nice touch. Rooms were clean, spacious (especially for classic doubles) and lovely decorated. Dog friendly and even had a tennis ball and treat for him. We struggled to get a taxi so the Owner Tim Berry himself too me and my family into boweness. Such a generous and gracious host to offer us that. Breakfast was lovely and they made eggs according to your preference. Food is beautiful 😍.
I loved everything. The only niggle and its very small and minor is the steps/stairs as my dad is 80 but for people more able bodied this shouldn't be a issue.
Lovely location
Quite noisy in room
3rd visit here. Staff are amazing, the rooms are beautiful and the food...WOW. We love walking on the estate. We will certainly be back.
Everything was amazing
Fire alarm at 7 am
The food is substandard and far too expensive for what it is. I had a Ribeye Steak for 50GBP and the meat was of very bad quality and I refused to eat it. I send it back and the waiter agreed it was not good. Yet the steak was still charged to my bill. The rooms need refurbishing and are quite small. On the whole, my stay was very disappointing and i will not be staying there again.
Experienced the alternative afternoon tea with friends three years ago and decided to stay over and treat some of the family, the afternoon tea did not disappoint, great selection, great quality and very filling.
Very busy, struggled to get a parking space on arrival, bit of an adventure to find our room from reception, lot of noise due to creaking floor boards but appreciate that this could be down to age of property, comfortable bedroom but en-suite in need of upgrade as quite dated taps, shower etc and damp patches on wall.
The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely
Room smelt a little damp although this is a very old building so can be expected
Friendly and helpful staff, great food!

Breakfast was lovely. We had a great time staff very warm and friendly. Couldn't do enough for you.
Nothing
Super aconchegante e um ambiente agradável
Everything about this place is amazing, staff are friendly, food is lovely and the rooms are comfortable and clean 🙂
Lovely pub/hotel with its own lovely woods to explore. Great if you have a dig, with a seperate part of the restaurant for dog owners. Great restaurant with amazing food.
Rooms are quite hot and you can't fully open the windows
Perfect location, comfortable bed, beautiful room and lovely breakfast couldn’t ask for more
Nothing
A lovely room , very clean and amazing location
Restaurant was a little pricey , but the food was delicious
Very clean, cosy and welcoming
The menu for food wasn’t inclusive for people with dietary requirements. We had to eat elsewhere.
Lovely hotel and staff are very good.
The bed was very uncomfortable.
It was clean and comfortable
It was to far from anything and the wifi did not work in the room the tv didn’t work
I booked for a 70th birthday a Sunday lunch. We had started to begin with which were pricey and small but tastey. I then I had the roast beef. All of it was cold. I ask for it to be heated. It took over twenty minutes to replate by that time the other person had finished eating. Finally it arrived and they had sent lamb instead of beef. I just asked for the the meat to be swapped. This took another twenty minutes. They eventually sent it and it was still cold, I didn’t send it back as I was fed up by then. The beef was grisly , the roast pots were hard and white, the cauliflower cheese was mush. It wasn’t great. I was charged for the whole meal. I took the bill to the desk as there was no on around and hd to wait about twenty minutes for a manager. They eventually agreed to remove the main meals from the menu. After spoiling a special birthday I think they should have offered something better.
Comfortable and clean, well appointed and some nice special touches
Lots of style and character. Unique
The character, location, drinks, food.
The room was nice however never been in a 5 star hotel with a shower curtain, this needs updating, bathroom was ok but needed a refurb, taps were loose and felt like they were going to fall off.
Its a fantastic location, food is really good, although I would have liked a little more choice in the menu, but the Piquante Steak was fantastic accompanied with Ceasers Salad, Onion Rings and Chips. Dining room is beautiful and staff were really good. Rooms were nice, we stayed in room 15 Foxs Den which was very comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated, and room 25 which was still pleasant but not as nice or large. There are beautifull grounds to walk around and it makes a great base for exploring the Lakes.
This restaurant is a favourite of mine, especially for the afternoon tea. This is the first time I stayed overnight. The staff were very welcoming and the room was comfortable. My dog was welcomed with a bed of her own, some treats and a toy. There are lovely walks in the estate behind the hotel. Our dinner and breakfast were delicious!
Nothing
The food was exceptional and the staff were so friendly and attentive. The location was great for exploring around Windermere. There was an EV charger for 2 EVs (7kw type2). It was great for the dog too, with lots of forest trails to explore and dogs were welcome in the lounge for breakfast and dinner. It was summer when we visited but the multiple fireplaces made the place look cosy and we'll probably go back in the winter to get the full benefit of them.
As you would expect for such an old inn, the floors creaked as you moved about the room and the soundproofing wasn't great but that's part of the character of an old inn.
The interior was gorgeous in the bar and dinning room. Bed was exceptionally comfy. Used the low wood bay spa with the sister hotel discount, which we loved. Breakfast was delicious.
Thin walls, could hear every creak, footsteps and talking from rooms around and the hallway. Could have used more outdoor seating and more parking - was a shame a car parked in front of the little grass lawn at the front, ruined the view when you sat outside the entrance. I used a tissue to put my contact lenses in and the cleaner put the same tissue back in the top of the tissue box.
Nice place , lovely welcome drink, garden at rear was beautiful
Dinner was very expensive
Lovely throughout. No expense spared for gorgeous decor. Spotlessly clean. All staff were excellent. Food was great too Breakfast was amazing A little out of town but well worth its location for beautiful scenery and woodland walks Dog friendly too with an external door from our room onto pretty patio / garden area. Cant wait to go back. Would highly recommend.
What a lovely stay we had at the Wild Boar. We received a complimentary room upgrade as it was our wedding night (stayed at home on actual wedding night). The room was fabulous and I loved the bath!! We had an evening meal and breakfast and couldnt fault the food or service. Would definitely recommend.
Very friendly staff Good location Great food
Food and walks
To many dogs in our corridor we were looking forward to a good sleep but dogs continuously going in our out rooms around us as we didn't have a pet . maybe put pet owners on 1 wing and other guests separate
Paid extra for an Owl Room. This wasn’t worth the money in my opinion. Lovely room but nothing more than a slightly bigger version of a standard room. It’s advertised as having a ‘unique feature’ but I’m yet to know what this was. We only paid extra for a feature bath in the room and didn’t actually have one. The hotel itself, location/food/service was lovely though
Excellent location! All done beautifully, the staff were amazing & looked after us really well. Thank you so much!
Absolutely wonderful time spent at this hotel. For the first meet and greet at reception to our leaving the Wild and Boar team we're helpful and professional throughout. Our room was both spacious and well appointed everything from an copper roll top bath to iron/board was catered for and included . The food was excellent and how many hotels have there own mini brewery within. I Cannot recommend this hotel more highly than to say we've found the jewel in the lake district crown.
Rooms were clean but need updating. Our room was extremely hot with only a little electric fan to help. Food was very good but overpriced. The grounds/woods need attention as there was very little of the grounds you could walk in, what was there was very old & not used, disappointing. The staff were lovely & very helpful. Asking £30 for each dog per night was ridiculous.
As indicated by the review title, we opted to come back to the Wild Boar 16 months after our first visit with friends in March 2025, this time just the two of us. ROOM This time round we opted to stay in an "Owl's Nest" Room. There were a few available online, so I phoned to clarify and the receptionist I spoke to was very patient and helpful. The room was excellent. Truly a very comfortable and spacious room with every need catered for. In particular, our sleep experience was excellent this time round. FOOD We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and unfortunately a few menu options were not available due to the fact that the hotel was very busy that weekend. I was a bit disappointed that whilst the salad I opted for in the end had plenty of the beef in the title, that the rest of the salad consisted of a very large pile of green leaves presented in a not very imaginative manner. As quoted from my last review in March 2025, "However, a separate, lighter menu in the bar would have been good as alternative option, as we were not always up for a full meal on every night of a 3 night stay." I would repeat that more smaller portion options should be included in the Dinner Menu as many of the current options are not suitable for smaller appetites. As before, the breakfast choices were very varied with an excellent range of choices. STAFF All staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay, so it would be very unfair to choose just one. Obvious from their interaction with other residents that they are genuinely interested in their guests and take time to chat and get to know regular visitors which is a very nice touch and very different from "chain" hotel experiences. FACILITIES/LOCATION Whilst we visited during a very busy period in the Lake District in general, one of the great advantages of the Wild Boar Estate has to be its location which, while very convenient, seems well away from the bustle of other areas near Lake Windermere. Always great to come back after a busy day to such a relaxing location. GENERAL EXPERIENCE We had a lovely, relaxing 3 night stay and would hope to be back at the Wild Boar Estate in the not too distant future.
stunning room exceptionally clean, beautiful food.. lovley staff!
nothing
Breakfast very good Bed comfy
Bathroom shabby and shower curtain which didn't close properly. Lumpy pillows. Very uncomfortable outdoor seating.
The alternative afternoon tea was fabulous, way better than a traditional afternoon tea. The staff were excellent and look after us.
Our favourite place to stay
The food and the atmosphere
We spent our honeymoon here in April 1974, 52 years ago so it was very special to return. A few changes but still lovely and the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.
Perfect!
Cały Hotel. Miejsce gdzie jest położony... Całe otoczenie wokół hotelu jest zrobione bardzo klimatycznie . Bardzo.polecam.tem hotel . Ja na pewno wrócę nie raz do tego hotelu .
Stopped over for one night on our way to Scotland to break up the journey and what a gem this place is. Set in the heart of beautiful countryside, the hotel was wonderful and staff polite and accommodating. The room was clean and quirky, the bed massive and so comfortable. Breakfast was amazing with home baked bread and cakes. After breakfast we did the self guided country walk around the estate which was the prefect start to the day. We will definitely be returning.
Great choice well presented
Bedroom fans in effective
We had the pleasure of staying here for a night last week. My Dad and I had a couple of days golfing our stay was very good, we find the staff to be excellent, friendly, and helpful. The meal we had and of course the few pints of the Blonde Boar were superb. The only one drawback and its probably more of a personal preference than a criticism I think in the summer breakfast should be served from 7.30 onwards and not to have a set time to eat after 8am, other than that everything else was great and I will return!
Both prior to and during our stay at Wild Boar we received excellent service from Paula on reception. The manager, Adam, was also very accommodating and as a result of this we booked our 3 night stay. Clearly Adam knows the importance of great customer service as this was evident from every member of his team. I want to give a special mention to Oliver who “single handedly” contributed to my wife’s birthday being a special event for her. All in all my wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Wild Boar and will be sure to return. Thank you to everyone.
Lovely stay exceptional food and staff
The hotel and room were great
The food for the price was very disappointing. The scotch egg for the price was tiny. The steak was tough, very chewy, the sauce was very salty could not taste whiskey or peppercorn, tiger prawns were over cooked so waw difficult to get them out of shells. The chips were not great either. Very disappointed as booked for an occasion as partner had been away working for a while.
My wife and I were scouring the internet for somewhere for a nice Sunday lunch. Having looked at several very promising venues we finally settled on The Wild Boar Estate, partially for the menu but also because it triggered distant memories of a place we’d stayed over 30 years ago. We weren’t disappointed on either front. It was the same place from all those years ago, with a few changes here and there but, unmistakably the same place : the rock feature in the dining room confirmed this, and the food was delicious. It probably isn’t the cheapest Sunday lunch in The Lakes but, for the extra couple of pounds, it’s well worth the additional expense. The menu boasts many gluten free options with most dishes being adaptable. I started with the smoked salmon which as very good and my wife shamelessly helped me out.. We both had the roast beef (£29.00). The beef was perfectly cooked, so tasty and very very tender with ‘proper’ gravy. I defy anyone to tell me they’ve had better cauliflower cheese… simply glorious. If there was any disappointment with the roast beef it was that there was no gluten free Yorkshire pudding, but that’s it… everything else was perfect. The staff are very efficient and very polite and the whole ambiance of The Wild Boar is extremely relaxed.
Room was lovely and spacious only thing that let it down was the cleanliness of the bathroom! Food and service was excellent. Not the best location if you are wanting to stay closer to Bowness or Windermere.
The colleagues were all brilliant, very friendly. The breakfast was fab.
Each to their own… I struggled with the beer selection (sorry but I wasn’t keen on their own brew). The room was far too hot, and although they can’t block the sun, air con would have been good.
Such a beautiful venue with excellent service and incredible food. The afternoon tea special was reasonably priced, delicious and very filling. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back and stay next time.
We were greeted warmly by reception, offered a tipple and made to feel welcome from the moment we checked in. All the staff were very friendly and professional. The food at breakfast and dinner was exceptional, as was the alternative afternoon tea. Would definitely recommend the hotel to others.
Everything
Absolutely nothing
We’ve visited The Wild Boar a few times but haven’t been since 2019. We had the Overmillbeck suite (our usual go to) as it’s at the back of the property so has no footfall noise. I was pleased to notice their WiFi had improved a lot since 2019 and there’s complementary EV charging (7 kWh). Dinner was delicious in the restaurant - we both had steaks (ribeye and fillet), but £51 for a fillet feels a little rich - it was amazing though! Breakfast was equally delicious, we tried the full English, Rueben the pastrami was melt in your mouth and smoked salmon bennie was great. Drinks at the bar sat by the fire were relaxing. The staffs were all excellent, very friendly and chatty. A couple bits of feedback: The room was nice as ever, but I did notice a few minor cleanliness issues - wooden panelling near bedside cabinet very dusty, inside of shower a bit grubby and the carpet could do with a refresh. The room has no mini fridge (I knew this already) but having a fridge would be handy for keeping water etc cold. We have a travel fridge for the car so brought our own to the room. We will be back, hopefully we won’t leave it another 7 years for our next visit :)
Staff were absolutely outstanding, food was amazing, room clean and comfortable.
Really friendly, lovely location, nice walk around the estate handy for Windermere Kendal etc Brilliant breakfast
The only downside to our room is the kettle would not plug in where it is located. We had to plug in on the bedside table to be able to make a drink
My Suprise 60th Birthday treat
Lovely country pub for Sunday lunch. Beautiful traditional pub with dried hops from the beams, a boars head about the roaring range and low beamed ceilings. Food was outstanding with an open kitchen. We had Sunday lunch was incredible and there was couple having afternoon tea which was served on a 3 tier cake stand made from tree trunks, aesthetically stunning and equally the afternoon tea looked amazing.
We got given a voucher for an alternative tea at The Wild Boar. We went about 4 years ago and we enjoyed it then, but today was a real disappointment. The service was ok, apart from me never receiving my coffee I asked for. As for our seat, we had a little 2 seater right behind 3 ladies, one with long hair hanging on my hubby's arm. The afternoon tea itself was the real disappointment. We loved the soup, although not warm, was still tasty. The fish nuggets were tough balls of fish wrapped in a crumb which fell off as soon as you cut into it. The chicken wasn't anywhere near as good as even KFC can make it - it was dry, coated with a nice sauce though. I ate the hot dog, even though it was dry as well, but one bite into the crumpet and that was it, bone dry as well, so left it. We liked the trifle and the waitress brought us a box to put our spiced tarts and scones in - wouldn't surprise me if they are dry as well. This was part of a 60th birthday treat, but we cannot recommend it to anyone. Really glad we didn't have to pay £80 for that.
Lovely bright clean room
It was a lovely setting
We recently stayed at the Wild Bowl Hotel and overall had a very enjoyable visit. The room was extremely comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The majority of the staff were lovely – friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our time there. Unfortunately, our experience was marred by an encounter with the night porter on our return from an evening out. When we arrived back around 2am, he was very rude, questioning us aggressively about where we had been and becoming quite angry and hostile. When I politely asked for a soft drink, his response was unwelcoming and unprofessional, which left a sour impression after what had otherwise been a pleasant day. While this was a single negative incident, it did affect our overall feeling about the hotel. We would recommend the Wild Bowl Hotel for its comfortable rooms and generally lovely staff, but hope management addresses standards for the night shift to ensure all guests feel welcome at any hour.
Perfect place to escape and unwind. Peaceful; inside & out, with a lovely wood to walk through outside and a variety of seating areas within the hotel itself. Faultless breakfast. Great range of drinks. Friendly and helpful staff. Our 2nd stay and I’m sure we’ll be back.
Rooms are quite spacious with lovely comfy beds. Our room had a shower inside the bath with a shower curtain; needs updating as the shower curtains are very old fashioned and cold if they touch your skin. A good selection of Taylors coffee and teas were on offer along with tasty treats. The towels were lovely and plump. Having dogs, we were offered dog beds, towels, bowls and a treat bag which was a lovely touch though we had brought our own things for them. However, each dog was charged the same price even though they were in just one room which made their stay with us quite expensive; a discount for a second dog should be offered. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We ate in The Lounge - dog friendly - which was really yummy; the lamb and chicken dishes were super tasty, date pudding and the affogato were exceptional. Breakfast was pretty good too. Would we go back? Yes. Perfectly situated in peaceful woods yet only a 5 minute drive to Windermere.
I liked the history of the property, nicely decorated and the bar maid was lovely and friendly.
The room was facing the car park, low window so had no privacy, nowhere to sit near the bar, other than two tables with two seats at each table, so couldn’t just sit at the bar for a drink. Bathroom wasn’t clean had hairs in the bath, shower height was very low, so uncomfortable for my 6ft2 partner to shower. The bed was very hard and the room was cold. No Netflix on the tv, we have stayed in much nicer hotels for the same price range.
We were upgraded to themed room which was lovely (the other three guests were also upgraded) and we were all put next to each other which was great.
Very satisfied
The setting and the breakfast
The food although incredible , was quite expensive
This was a lovely relaxing stay and such a beautiful, characterful building. The food is amazing, the breakfast in particular is gorgeous.
Beautiful stay lovely room - Great room to stay in with a dog . Friendly staff and the food was fantastic!!
Nothing
Furnishings and decor were fitting of the building and standards and amenities were great. Particular impressed with the wooded area at the rear of the pub where I was able to let my very energetic off the lead without having to worry. Great idea with the fitness stations dotted throughout. Loads of paths through the woods. Food was great, both dinner and breakfast.
Our 3rd visit this year. It really is a lovely place. The food was lovely, the staff are friendly and our room was a real treat. The walk around the grounds was peaceful. Really enjoyed our stay. We will be back.
Everything the real fires the atmosphere and the great staff
Everything was great
Rooms were of a good size, property was quirky and rustic with original features which we love
Service for food was very slow. Waited over 1.5 hours for main meal to be served to our table for evening meal. Breakfast was also a wait too.
Beautiful property with great history!
Low ceilings in parts being 6ft tall! But it really wasn’t a problem!
Really enjoyed the old world charm
No dislikes
Grounds were great and very dog friendly
Room had a large bug inside. Staff were rude at dinner. Served raw chicken. Hoovering at 08:00 on Sunday morning.
Staff super attentive! Especially in the restaurant.
Head board was loose and moves and banged on wall!
The food, in particular the daily breakfast was lovely
We sadly had moths in our room, once noticing them we could spot 15 in the room and when looking closely at the carpet you could see that it was being eaten by carpet moths. One morning we woke up to moths on the bedding. The shower head in the en-suite bathroom our parents were staying in fell off when the shower was being used! When we checked out the staff asked us how the stay was and whether we wanted to pay the service charge and didn’t seem that concerned about the issues we raised. Disappointing as the restaurant area, food & ground are all lovely. At times we found the staff a little stern and as a result we don’t feel this property is a 4 star hotel.
Clean and friendly staff
The radiator making a noise through night as though something was hitting it
Meals were excellent.
We’re not keen on dog friendly.
Hotel, bar and breakfast was amazing. Really enjoyed our stay, would definitely return.
Great friendly welcoming staff, Fantastic Accomodation, wonderful breakfast and set in lovely grounds!
Can't fault the hotel or staff! just a little outside bowness approx 3 miles. Wish i'd of enquired about a taxi service into town to complete the experiance! theres always next time!
Beautiful, clean, comfortable hotel. Pleasant, helpful staff. Breakfast was delicious with lots of variety. Great walk through woods after breakfast. Very welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
The hotel is beautifully designed, cosy log fire , all little details didn’t go unnoticed, the rooms are beautiful and done to a high standard better than some 5* hotels we have stayed in . The food was amazing, we ate in the evening, good quality ingredients and done to a high standard .
There was nothing we did not like about the property , we wouldn’t have the breakfast again, i think that could be better . The drinks are more expensive than anywhere else we have stayed in the lakes. Other than that its beautiful and well designed hotel.
Unique, good food
Staff were friendly food was excellent. Exceptional breakfast
The overall ambience was exceptional. Very relaxed atmosphere with attentive and helpful staff. The room was very clean and well equipped and the bed specially comfy.

Parking was tricky at times
staff friendly and helpful throughout our stay, breakfast/dinner amazing - great selection of delicious well prepared dishes, premises cosy and relaxing-the fireplaces throughout the hotel created a very warm and inviting atmosphere
While the overall stay was enjoyable, the room had a window facing directly onto the car park, which offered very little privacy. This made it difficult to fully relax, as the space felt somewhat exposed
the room and the food were really lovely. The pub is really cosy.
I purchased this as a gift for my parents, I paid prior to their arrival, but when they arrived they were charged again for the room. Which was really disappointing as my dad had to pay it even though it had already been paid for, also, they knew how much I had paid fr the room which isn't something you want common knowledge for a gift. I paid for them to have the room with the big copper bath in and it was quite expensive for the night so I was disappointed that this was their first encounter when they arrived for their stay. I was also unable to pay for their afternoon tea over the phone, I had to transfer the amount to my parents for them to pay for it, again which tarnished it for me as the though of them having a lovely weekend paid for by myself was overcast. I did ring up and query the payment of the room and they refund my dad, but that wasn't the point, it was that I had paid and this was not noted on the booked. I had the confirmation and thought they would arrive and just have to check in and could go to their room.
The atmosphere was warm and friendly
A lack of plugs near the bed but not really somerhing to get tol hung up
Staff all friendly and the food was delicious
Price of drinks
Lovely Receptionist and a free moonshine when booking in was a lovely touch. Too many stairs for me as I have trouble walking but a lovely pub and nice rooms. Thought main course was expensive for a meal I found a bit tasteless, lamb chops grizzly and meal a bit flavourless, the chips very pale not crisp at all, pork cheeks chewy but I must say the Breakfast was Brilliant with plenty of choice and oodles of flavour! Bed was comfy and roaring fire in the bar Homely. Didn't bring the dog as thought £30 a bit steep it'll probably put a lot of people off staying if they wish to bring their fur babies with them, they'll choose elsewhere.
Hotel was beautiful and the staff were really friendly in all areas.. such a beautiful place very homely feeling, Will most definitely be booking again
