Arrival was traumatic. Property was poorly signposted and unlit so I drove past. The forecourt was so dark I had to use the light on my phone to get from my car to the door. The man who checked me in gave hurried and unclear instructions and did not take time to answer my questions or show me how things worked. The room was clean but shabby, with some wallpaper beginning to peel. The toilet was cramped, the shower only ran at one heat setting and the hairdryer was broken. The bed and the breakfast were ok so I could sleep and eat but overall not a pleasant experience.
And a large mature garden with eclectic tables and chairs - reminiscent of the Raj era. Beds extremely comfortable.
I like this place. Makes a change to the big chains. Characterful rooms, good breakfast. Hotel is in very nice grounds
The stay was relaxed and comfortable with a flexible approach to checking in which was appreciated. Rooms are cosy, and the hotel was quiet and perfect for sleeping in.
Very old building, but being kept well, lovely peaceful garden , beds Very comfortable.
The hotel was lovely. The room was comfortable, with a lovely view over the garden. Breakfast was filling. Anna was most kind.
Great facilities in room, and great service. Lovely garden. Quirky building. Walkable into Ely Centre.
It was clean & breakfast was good. The property was fine, a little dated but it needs a refurb. Location was suoerb.Shower over bath went very hot & I was unable to adjust it.
Quaint and slightly dated, but very clean and quiet, good breakfast - in this day and age excellent value.
Keys waiting when I arrived, Room tidy. Bed linen very clean and crisp. Easy walking distance to town and cathedral. Good quality breakfast
large premises with nice grounds, good location for Cathedral etc, seems the General Manager ovesees most tasks , The room #1 was clean but could fo land we could leave cases in room ahead of the official check in time. It fell apart however with the evening meal which we did not enjoy. The GM wore scruffy paint splattered trousers and this was distracting , years ago it was the diners who were encouraged to dress a bit smart, which we did in those days. the lamb was tough and the veg. hard, Manager and my husband disagreed on the quality of the food, to be to be honest He left most of it. rather wish we had gone to a pub ,,
The owner would prepare food of our choice, the quality was very high standard.
Staff very polite and caring.
We had anbe excellent 3 days at the Nyton, very welcoming warm staff, bedrooms were basic but adequate, breakfast and evening meals were excellent.
Overall a very friendly stay in a beautiful setting. Very well looked after and convenient for a walk into the Cathedral area
Really enjoyed this hotel, beautiful grounds and very comfortable room. Excellent breakfast as well. Just a 10 mins walk into the centre of the town.
Really great spot!
Only stayed 2 nights and found that place suited my needs
The Nyton is an older property, and has all the problems that come with that. Our host was very amenable, and the food was A1. Our room was big enough and the bed was very comfortable. The garden is large and there are several animal visitors to watch for. Fine for a stopover or short stay.
Just a very pleasant one night stay in a clean and comfortable room with an excellent breakfast. Nothing to dislike.
The room was clean and comfortable with all the necessities you need when on first arrival. This also included a lovely cooked breakfast with the option on preferences for how you wanted certain breakfast items cooked. It was a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral and an ideal location for my wifes Graduation that we had at the weekend. And it being central to all the local amenities, would definitely stay again and visit the town centre and shops in the near future.
Excellent decor. Very imaginative.
The only person working after 3 hours with no staff. was stoned he closed the bar and kitchen and it stank of cannabis all night, disgraceful way to treat guests
Worst place I’ve ever stayed, restaurant and bar closed no staff on site no lighting or heating just appalling
No staff on arrival or departure
Lovely guest house with all the required facilities. Comfortable bed with crisp clean sheets. Room temperature was good and quiet (apart from people in the corridor). Good selection at breakfast. Interesting history of the 100 year old building whilst chatting with one of the staff.
Checking in friendly and the location to town was good.. The room was very cold but heaters were provided. The bathroom no heating and the shower poor. The full English breakfast was cold.
No one was there to let us in when we arrived - in the end of a guest had to. The lobby stank of weed. The locks on one of our rooms didn't work, and the walls were paper thin - we could hear people watching TV from several rooms away.
The room was clean and comfortable, plenty of off road parking and the town only 5 minutes or so walk away. Staff very friendly, breakfast excellent!
Very hard to find no lights on the gate we drove past about three time and tried to ring
Convenient to town centre. No lights on driveway, which made entry at night difficult. A 'tired' hotel, beds were comfortable but there was mould in the shower room. Excellent breakfast, a nice dining room
.
A hotel and proprietor with character. The staff were very friendly, the food was terrific and the bed was comfortable. There is an air of Fawlty Towers, which is a good thing!
The bedroom was pretty dated and had too much furniture in it. On the plus side though, the bed was comfy, the shower was hot and the breakfast was excellent. Also was an easy walk into the city centre
Room and whole of the building in desperate need of updating and decorating. Sprung bed frame very noisy, no door handle on outside of door so had to let it slam to close. Very small tv, needed binoculars to see it. Mould in bathroom. Breakfast was the oy highlight.
Hotel could do with a bit of updating staff very friendly only downside bar and restaurant wasn’t open the town is only a 10 minute walk away excellent breakfast 👍
A really good place to stay. Great atmosphere with conservatory in the lobby and a spacious garden. Serve a decent breakfast. Will go there Again.
Lovely old house staff very friendly super room
This place has no cleaner it was very dirty. Felt sick after eating breakfast
My stay was very comfortable and the hotel was very convenient for my needs. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
A distinctive old world charm. A couple of issues but easily overcome and remedied. A pleasant evening meal on our aarival day.
We all enjoyed our stay and were well looked after by Robert at the Nyton. The breakfast was great with lots of choice...not only Full English on the menu e.g Porridge and Smoked Haddock. The large garden is fabulous with lots of seating areas and trees. Location is good 10 mins walk to Ely Cathedral and the Train Station.
.
The hotel/ guest house is in need of refurbishment. The bathroom shower had a nasty smell, so we had to keep the door closed. In order to fill the kettle a large plastic jug is provided which hangs in the shower. Some sockets did not work. On the plus side, the breakfast was lovely, and when I asked if they had a magnifying mirror one was quickly found. Ely is lovely, and the hotel is well situated.
Good food, staff, location. and rooms.
Didn’t actually stay although we were booked. The condition of the ‘hotel’ was such that we felt uncomfortable due to the untidiness and clutter everywhere which would make it impossible to clean to meet covid recommendations. The rooms we were offered had a distinct offensive smell. The fabric of the building was also uninviting.
Quirky and lovely little hotel in central Battle. You couldn't be more central if you tried. Room perfectly adequate and comfortable. What sets this hotel apart is the restaurant with great home-cooked food with locally sourced ingredients - great food and served by lovely people who really care about their hotel, staff and food. No need to eat anywhere else. We'll stay here again.
Character, charm and individuality (the very opposite of a bland chain hotel) with a welcoming and helpful owner. Quiet, surrounded by trees in its own large garden, and even a bird feeder—in other words, a real place. An excellent breakfast; how nice to encounter good ingredients and cooking. We are already planning a return visit.
Property was fine just wished they served breakfast later than 9
Hotel was good, large parking area. Room clean, bit dated maybe. Having said that its an old house with lots of character. Breakfast was very good. Food excellently cooked. Young lad who was the waiter was very good, very pleasant Nothing too much trouble and his manners were impeccable. Im so sorry I don't know his name but he was the only one waiting on at breakfast.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Nyton. All the staff were very friendly and the location was excellent. We will definitely stay again.
Unfortunately I arrived to a damp and slightly dirty room at the top of the guest house. My glass by the sink had clearly not been cleaned from the last occupant which was a little concerning in a covid-world. It was lovely having an en-suite, but having to crouch down in the shower to fit wasn’t ideal. I’m by no means a tall man - it was just a very small shower! Breakfast was fantastic and the service was brilliant - it was just a shame that the room and bathroom was so small! Location was great for getting into Ely.
This hotel has great potential but in need of restoration to its original glory and an upgrade of guest facilities. The one night I needed a good sleep I, and other guests, were woken at 2:30am by a drunken guy coming back and trying to get into his room, failed and then tried mine.
great stay - great neighborhood - great property
As with other reviews, the property needs updating.
The hotel was close to town and easy to find. Overall the hotel is dated and feels that way throughout. Breakfast was ok but the classical music played throughout was not to our taste. Convenient but needs some money spent on it along with some staff training.
Excellent hotel in a great location 10 mins walk from Ely Cathedral and centre.
Although pleasant the hotel was very dated and over priced for what was offered. Wish I had chosen somewhere else.
Pleasant hotel in good location, very comfortable. helpful proprietor
Great location and good service with nice breakfast.
We liked the extensive grounds & being able to eat our little picnic teas outside. Such a relaxed atmosphere generally.
I always like to stop at the Nyton when working over in Ely, its convenient for town, a nice relaxed quiet place with good food - highly recommended
The Nyton's overall experience was very good. An ideal location within walking distance from the city centre. The price was appropriate to the season.
The staff at the Nyton were very helpful. The room itself was quite small but adequate size for our one night trip. The bathroom was very small and the shower wasn’t the best but I wouldn’t want this to put anyone off the Nyton. The breakfast was sublime and served in an old fashioned hall which gave a good vibe. Located just a short 10 minute walk from the Centre of Ely and the cathedral I would recommend this place if you’re visiting the city.
No specific issues however not what I would consider a 4 star rating. 3 star at best. I had a single room which was outdated and very basic. Service was good. I wouldn't stay here again based on the rating simply because it wasn't what I expected. In fairness I did book late in the day so my arrival was perhaps unexpected.
Very good no complaints
Nice little hotel located very close to the town centre, with free parking. Good breakfast. Nice, quiet area.
Unfortunately neither the restaurant or the bar were open, which we were not aware off before our stay. This property is set in lovely grounds but the property it self needs some tlc.
Found hotel to be very dated, more like guest house than hotel.
Robert and the staff were so friendly and helped whenever it was needed. The food was lovely. Would definitely stay again.
When I arrived the receptionist was also decorating the hallway, blocking the entrance on a dodgy looking ladder.... no safety signs present. She didnt seem to know how to work the booking system and it took some time to get into my room. the whole hotel was dark, dingey, dated and damp. I would say it was very clean either. also the bar was closed throughout our stay. Once in my room, the beds were small and uncomfortable, the tv was smaller than my phone, the bathroom was dated, no water pressure and mould around the windows. as well as cobwebs everywhere. wifi signal was poor we didnt even risk breakfast, was to scared. if there were availability in another hotel I would have left!! this is in no way a 4 star as they claim.... i would struggle to give it 2 at best.
Ely is a beautiful place, we went up last weekend for the OU graduation ceremony. The Nyton hotel was comfortable, clean and steady the food was really good. No luxuries but everything that you would want. The manager was very attentive and accommodating.
Really frustrating car park. Difficult to negotiate with a vehicle from the owners making access even more challenging. My son caught the side of his car, as many others had obviously done in the past. So upsetting. Was looking forward to this stopover but it was a frustrating experience.
Didn't see anyone on reception the whole time i was there! My key was on reception when I arrived but the place was in darkness. Still no one there when I went out, came back or when I checked out the next day. Bar was closed the evening I stayed there, was hoping for a beer before I went out that night. Breakfast room also deserted the next morning, was served after waiting there for a good five minutes. Full English was nice, but beans not that hot and server never returned with my requested ketchup! Was not warm enough to wait for it. In summary - nice enough hotel, good location to walk into Ely, plenty of parking, nice area but acute lack of staff on reception and behind the bar.
It was a little quirky but remember this is a guest house not an "n" star hotel. We enjoyed our stay and were very comfortable and well fed..
Really dirty place with the owner who makes breakfast holding his cigarette. The bathroom needs a good scrub.
Very good quiet location for walking into 'town' and a very nice breakfast. Was charged extra for our small dog and wasn't aware of a charge until we checked in. Could do with some updating in the rooms but overall a nice place to stay.
Lovely hotel with a very relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast good & only a 5 minute walk to the cathedral. Would stay here again. Thankyou
Great position. Great Breakfast. That is as far as it goes. Never worth 4 stars or even 3. Had everything, but not everything worked. Bar never open. Evening meals never on. Bedroom tiny. TV postage stamp size. Bathroom so small toilet was side-saddle. Water trickled through taps. Paid far too much - expected a really nice 4 star for the money - wrong !
We checked in here just before 8pm, there was no-one about, even the telephone number left just rang out. Room key left for us, the room was warm and very pokey, the bathroom was so cramped you could brush your teeth whilst sitting on the toilet. Worst of all the althe water pressure in the room was a dribble. There were only two things going for this location, the cooked breakfast and the proximity to the lovely city centre of Ely. When we can to leave at 10am again there was no-one about :-( shame I couldn’t give this feedback in person, and that we had already paid in advance.
Stayed in Ely for one night with my Mum. Found the Nyton to be a fantastic country hotel. Breakfast was tasty and beds very comfortable. ten minute walk into town centre. Would definitely return here. Staff were lovely too.
I arrived late and had not let them know through a variety of reasons. I had not realised reception staff time is limited. A fellow guest let me in and my key had been left with a note. My room was small but comfortable and well organised (would not suit a tall guest) with a magnificent early morning view of the Cathedral. The room cooled with the windows open. Breakfast was standard fare.
Only a 3* seems more like a 4* Just a lovely hotel , full marks.
convenient for town and cathedral but room facilities needed a little tlc
top place - will deffo go again
Nobody at reception when we arrived and we left a message on the phone as instructed. Eventually we found someone upstairs who was cleaning the rooms who was able to check us in. Otherwise no complaints.
Friendly atmosphere. Excellent staff and the breakfast was very good.
Perfectly situated to explore Ely on foot (and that's from dedicated non-walkers!). Lovely old fashioned pub down the road, short distance to central Ely with the cathedral, main road and market place. Wonderful Farmers and Craft Market on 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Then on down to the river. Breakfast was good and freshly cooked to order. All facilities in our room which was small but comfortable. Meals available some evenings. Lovely garden although we did not explore as it was a very cold February!
Positives Quiet Nice toast Drawbacks Shabby chic with a twist of Fawlty Towers everything needs attention from decor onwards. The prog rock guitar through breakfast was bizarre.
By agreement, key left for me...saw no-one on arrival. Good room, but very cold in the night (no heating in my bathroom). Hotel has a comfy feel & warm downstairs. Good breakfast, usual cereal, fruit, and range of cooked food. Service excellent. Would come again.
OK until we left the ground floor public areas; then we were left wondering how this property satisfies modern standards for fire safety, electrical code, and accessibility. Assuming all rooms in similar condition to ours, then the entire first and second guestroom floors need to be gutted and rebuilt from scratch, and access to them improved from the ground floor. Structurally possible; economically viable? Probably not. The staff try hard but the Nyton's exterior shell and its location are sadly its only positives. Disappointing.
The owner and staff were very accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed our stay there.
This really is faulty Towers, despite the large room and four poster bed, it was extremely old, badly up kept. Room was freezing cold, cheap crispy linen on the bed and lots of things not working. Light by bed, extra heater in bathroom, tv sound intermittent. When complained the manager was very abrupt and almost rude. Felt everything was too much trouble. Would never stay again I fact we tried to get in another hotel for our second night but was unable to book somewhere else on the day.
Bedroom maxed out with beds. We stayed in room with double bed + single bed but only one person could walk around at a time. OK for one night only.
Friendly welcome and good breakfast. Clean and tidy but the single room had an impractically small en suite shower room.
Old fashioned comfortable hotel - enjoyed every minute of my stay!
Not as well organised as it could be, the owner has problems concentrating on his priorities.couldnt recommend it.
Nice hotel but rooms were a bit dated The man on reception could have been more friendly .It may have been because we were two workmen in a van . Other than that it was a great breakfast Local town centre is about ten minutes walk
Very comfortable, close to town centre, good breakfast, friendly staff,
The Nyton is a little trapped in a time warp but there is something quite endearing about that. However what was not acceptable were the beds in our room. We were on the top floor in a family room. Which I renamed 'The room that time forgot' (we had stayed previously in a room on the floor below which was much better.) I recommend that the owner attempts to sleep in both of the twin beds in our room 8. I think that will galvanise the purchase of new bed frames and mattresses. Also the paper pillow protectors were awful. (Sheets and towels however were fine) In contrast the breakfast was very good. Unfortunately the end of our stay was nearly a disaster. We had arranged with a member of staff to leave our bags which we would pick up later. When we arrived no-one was there and our bags were locked in a room. Luckily I eventually managed to locate a key that openned the door, ran to the train station just in time to step on before it set off. A close shave! Not sure what had happened at the Nyton perhaps it was a misunderstanding or communication issue.
