Friendly staff , clean and well decorated room , great breakfast
Clean and comfortable rooms. Bed linen and towels smelled amazing (fresh not starched) Bathroom had lovely added touch of locally sourced toiletries. Fresh milk supplied in small mini fridge was an added bonus as well as the complimentary chocolates. Bed very comfortable, probably one of the best nights sleep we've ever had away from home. Bar and restaurant very nice. Loads to choose from on the menu. Food and drink competitively priced. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely visit again and would recommend to others.
Stairwell up to second floor quite narrow & steep but that wouldn't deter us from staying again.
The location was good. Breakfast good choices. We stayed for three nights
The weather was not kind to us
It is a lovely hotel with plenty of parking and the restaurant not only has inside but also plenty of outside sitting. the staff were friendly and the room was lovely. perfect for short stay. the food was very nice and offers plenty of choices. they accommodate gluten free very well.
the only downside is the location. its great in a way that you can connect with an A road right away but the same time its an A road and a very busy one. traffic is loud so sleeping with the window open was not an option, even at night it has traffic. it may not bother everyone but we had to close the windows.
The accommodation was great, we had a large and comfortable room with a huge bathroom. The restaurant has a very cosy feel, it's nicely decorated and the food was delicious. Really recommend staying there.
Lovely hotel
Nice rooms friendly service
Lovely decor , lovely and clean
Isolated
Clean, Nice view, nicely decorated room, nice bed, nice bathroom, good food, ideal for Lake District
Wobbly table, confusing reception
We have stayed here before. Nice location lovely hotel comfy beds and lovely food
The outside space was beautiful and the room was lovely
The room was quite dusty in areas and wardrobe very small. I had to hang my dresses from bathroom door casing.
Staff and food were excellent
Room no7 on top floor was adjacenct to very noisy people which is not the hotels fault but the doors slamming could be mitigated with soft closures.also the drip from the toilet should be looked at as this was difficult to ignore and therefore made a very disruptive sleep
Evening staff very friendly and professional Evening meal was excellent - good quality produce, great flavours.
Breakfast very different and disappointing compared to evening meal. One member of staff, very slow service and not attentive to customers needs such as refilling drinks and topping up breakfast buffet. Menu for bfast buffet included danish pastries- only croissants each day, selection of cheeses = plastic wrapped individual cheddar or Red Leicester which were average quality. Tea and cafetière coffee very very weak. Sausages claimed to be Cumberland were heavily seasoned with sage- more like Lincolnshire sausages. Not a traditional peppery Cumberland at all. Bacon oven done and obviously sat keeping warm for a while as very hard and dry. Unfortunately woken by faulty Fira alarm at 6am with very slow response from off site night team - taking over an hour to action, alarm finally checked and silenced at 07:10
Ristorante e dimensione stanza.
Rumori in camera da parte della stanza sopra. Si sentiva tutto anche camminare. Bagno inoltre era molto piccolo.
The bed was comfortable
Yes I should have checked the size of the room, my error. However in my defence room 6 is described as “Deluxe”. Be aware room 6 is in the roof and very small. There is nowhere to place suitcase. The “over dressing” of the room looks good for a photo shoot but not practical when space is at a premium, cushions; throws; plastic flowers & nick knacks are not necessary. Room 6 faces the back of the property, the weather was hot so the small window needed to be open as there is no air con (I was not expecting air con). The window is above the kitchens extraction fan! There is a lot of noise but does stop when the kitchens finish around 21:00 BUT the kitchen smells “frying” do not! A small powerful fan was provided however there was nowhere to place it for any benefit once the curtains were closed as it was positioned on the cluttered windowsill. The extractor fan in the en-suite was not working however my husband fixed that by cleaning it. In the morning, thankfully for us after we had showered, the power to the building went off. These things happen! however we received no apology for any inconvenience, the women who took our key was more concerned that she was not going to able to make up the bills before customers needed to leave. Our bill had already been paid.
Beautiful setting away from the hustle and bustle of town.
The location was brilliant. Lots of choice for breakfast was good and cooked well. The room was very comfortable
Fabulous hotel, ideal location on the way to Scotland. Beautifully decorated, very comfortable family room for 3 of us and 2 dogs. King size bed much appreciated. Great food and service. Highly recommend.
Room size and cleanliness
Leuk verblijf en zeer gemoedelijke, gastvriendelijke sfeer.
Really nice rooms, comfortable beds. Very good menu in restaurant.
Everything was good
Beautiful Hotel in such a scenic place, it had a very large garden space for your dog to run about safely in. Food was amazing such a great high standard, staff were very friendly and helpful.
Didn't have a lift to take heavy suitcase/luggage up to the top floor, but it is a very old building that has been converted into a hotel. Stairs were very steep and small on second floor.
Great hotel on the edge of the Lakes
Beautiful hotel in beautiful grounds.
Nothing to complain about
Very good stay, staff very helpful. Ate there three times food good and well priced. Would stay there again.
Nothing
Lovely and comfortable and nice food.
Great stay
All good
Ontbijt was prima. Avondeten iets minder. De patat en uienringen rookt en smaakt naar vis! In dezelfde frituur gebakken lijkt ons waar de vis ingebskken werd. Verder prima!
Het eten vooral de patat smaak en geur.
Friendly staff
Its our second time staying here and its perfect, friendly clean rooms are beautiful and smell lovely
Only downfall is probably when its warm for bedrooms to have fans in them.
Great location and really smart hotel. Our room was large and very comfortable.
It is extremely hot at the moment and the hotel could not provide a fan to cool the room.
Very handy position for Motorway and towns
The staircase to the 2 nd floor was very difficult when you are carrying a case and over 80’ !
The location was excellent for . Only 10-15 mimnsfrom the wedding venue . The breakfast was excellent
Everything was perfect for us
Friendly staff, great food, great aspect
Our room was on the top floor and got very hot over night but not a huge issue
I didn't know such small TV sets existed today. The wifi mostly said "Connected without internet" which is useless for me. There is no footpath along the busy main road into Kendal.
Did not experience the breakfast, but the menu looked good! Bartender Lee helpful with directions to town by foot. Outdoor drink seating was pleasant in front of hotel
There was a somewhat noisy dog 'at times" directly across the hall. Not a deal breaker though
Staff where fantastic, room very comfortable with a huge bathroom
Everything about the property was excellent the staff , the room and the food
Nothing to dislike
Great room and facilities!
Our room had good facilities. Bathroom was very nice. Lovely view from our window. Breakfast very good. Able to have evening meal in the hotel. Easy access to lake district.
Would be good to have some decaffeinated tea in the room.
Beautifully decorated lovely convenient setting
The stairs to room but were informed
Great location and comfortable place
Everything was great
The room we had was superb. Perfect for four of us. The food in the evening also amazing and staff were brilliant
Everything was great but the pillows were less good!
Lovely boutique feel to the room and lots of space for us as a family. Food at the restaurant was excellent and the location was perfect for stopping off but also exploring the lakes.
Very nice place with good room bar and restaurant.
Very little ventilation in hot weather, cup marks all over dressing table and far too many cushions for our liking (ten in one room).
Great location, very comfy beds with lovely bathroom and clean room. Great food for evening and breakfast
.
Location
The property warn about the Stairs. They were right the stairs up to the top floor are difficult to navigate.
First impressions the gardens are stunning, with an abundance of flowers, and lines in the lawn. A warm welcome at reception! The room was spacious, well dressed and very clean! Im a dust hunter. Great water pressure in the shower too. The welcome boxes for the dogs too were an added treat.
Fresh milk in the rooms/fridge would make it 10/10. The stairs to the top floor with luggage and two dogs slightly steep/narrow but no bother to “younger” people.
Breakfast ok Staff friendly Easy parking
Small room Poorly cleaned Towels not changed
Sehr empfehlenswert
Character of the property and friendly service and staff with good bedroom, nice food and good atmosphere.
Nothing to mention
We loved the look of the hotel, beautiful decoration and had a very friendly atmosphere. Food was excellent and even a little gift for our dog. Location close to Kendal was a plus and very easy to find.
Nothing I can think of.
Sa vue et son emplacement
Attente avant d’avoir la chambre Bruyant le soir
Breakfast very good
Didn’t like stairs to second floor- next visit I will ask for a room on first floor very good
Lovely staff and room and made our dog feel very welcome. Delicious breakfast
Tight stairs to the 2nd floor
A great place to stay, value for money, very clean and relaxing
Nothing
The Gateway is conveniently located. We had a comfortable stay, with dinner and breakfast. Food was very good. The staff accommodated our request for a candle on a dessert to mark one of our party's birthday, and even provided an extra treat for her.
Everything was great. But there was a bad smell in our bathroom (room 8 on the top floor), maybe to do with plumbing?
Location,decor,comfort. No
The stairs. Our room was on the second floor and navigating a windy stair case with a dog was difficult.
Well presented ,comfortable,helpful staff
N/a
Big bedroom with armchairs and comfortable bed.
Steep, narrow stairs - partly without a handrail - to get to the room (particularly difficult to navigate with luggage); noise from garden and car park as staff left between 23:30 and 24:00.
Clean, comfortable, we were well looked after and they were accommodating with our bicycles.
Comfy beds.
This hotel is in a fantastic location and very pretty. We were welcomed and the room was spacious, clean and with good facilities. We had a lovely view, massive bed and space for our dog. Our dog was also made to feel very welcome with a gift on arrival and treats throughout the stay. Breakfast was very good too amd we’d definitely return. Fantastic location to explore the Lakes.
Nothing to note
Beautiful hotel, such lovely staff, we were made to feel so welcome with out little dog. Our room was beautiful. The food in the restaurant was 10/10. Location was fab, we travelled into Kendal town and Windermere whilst we were here, only a short drive from both. will definitely be staying again!
This is our 2nd stay here, just as good. Staff are great, food was very good. Room was very clean and comfortable, lovely decor and furnishings. Very dog friendly and exceptional value for money breakfast. We have stayed in 8 hotels in 8 days and this one was the best overall and value for money.
Beautiful room, well presented with a huge bathroom. Staff were friendly and professional throughout our stay. Food in the bar was of a good standard.
There is quite a bit of road noise as the hotel Is close to the main junction/roundabout, so vehicles accelerate away from the junction which can be very loud. Curtains in the bedroom could be darker, lined, or there could be black out blinds as the room gets very light very early in the morning.
Location superb,we had a wedding 10 minutes from there.Room quite small but that didnt matter, everything you needed was in the room and bathroom. Some lovely touches ,yummy couple of chocolates and biscuits. Staff were super helpful and breakfast had an abundance of choice which you pay extra for. Would definately recommend this hotel .
Lovely large room, beautifully decorated. It overlooked the car park (below) but lovely views in the distance. Plenty of parking.Heated towel rail in bathroom a lovely touch….warm towels after showering. Comfortable bed and 2 comfy armchairs. Food in restaurant/ bar was very good with quick service. Staff always polite and helpful. Exceeded our expectations and wouldnt hesitate to stay again.
Nothing to dislike!
Staff were so welcoming, we totally enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and ambience. Emma, Lee and all the team were great, very efficient and a credit to making the hotel keep the reputation it is known for. Breakfast was excellent, as were all the meals we enjoyed... thank you Chef/s! We will most certainly return to this wonderful hotel and 100% highly recommend.
Nothing much.
Large clean bedroom with large bathroom.
Position close to noisy road and big round about
The warm welcome was great. All staff were so attentive and are a real credit to The Gateway. Big shout out to Emma, Lee and Shaun FOH. The Breakfast was great. The Dinner menu was great with plenty of choice, everything looked and tasted so lovely and nicely presented. Wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend this lovely hotel, we thiroughly enjoyed our stay!
Nothing major to report.
V comfortable rooms, good service and a lovely choice for breakfast and evening meals. In a v convenient location for my travel up to Scotland as well as being close to many parts of the Lake District. I will definitely be back!

style and location
feel breakfast could’ve been better
Clean and good situation
Quite small room
Great room, Great bar and restaurant. Food was amazing with a good menu.
Nothing I didn’t like tbh.
Great breakfast at a very reasonable price.
Nothing.
The staff were friendly and helpful, Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Location is very remote to go for a walk but ideal for driving as it's in the middle of each direction to kendal or windermere. .
The stairs to the room were very narrow and winding, and we had two dogs. therefore, trying to get up with our luggage and dogs on leads was near impossible.
Loved the warm comfy room and friendly helpful staff. Beautifully decorated.
Nothing
The hotel itself was lovely and the restaurant was also good.
We specifically booked 2 twin rooms and 1 double room all the rooms had double beds we had to ask them to separate them. Which they did and left the beds unmade with the linen folded at the bottom. Sheets were torn.
The location was beautiful. The breakfast was very excellent
No complaints at all
We had a warm welcome. Beautiful views Lovely complimentary toiletry products. Nice breakfast.
Previous guests sanitary towels left in the toilet bin. Staff were very apologetic when I let them know. There was a cut off time for ordering the evening meal which would have been helpful if front of house staff had warned us about. Appreciate the chef going out their way to make us a meal in the end (albeit over cooked)
Beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. The restaurant had delicious food and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
nothing
Nice room and perfect surroundings
CLEAN. GREETED BY A LOVELY LADY - ALL THE STAFF WE MET WERE PLEASANT, CURTEOUS AND HELPFUL. THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT AND A REASONABLE PRICE. THE VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE TERRACE WAS STUNNING - ENJOYED OUR NIGHTCAP SAT THERE.
THE ROOM WAS A TIGHT FIT FOR TWO PEOPLE.
Location was stunning, very peaceful and quiet environment
If pets are not allowed, especially dogs then it's an ideal place to stay for longer period of time. It's a small hotel and rooms are very close to each other so pets are the biggest disturbance in my opinion. The next door guest's dog kept barking the whole night and we couldn't sleep well.
Room clean
Bed very uncomfortable which affected sleep.
When a hotel says it's dog friendly, this fits the bill.
Staff were very friendly, super friendly to dogs and very accommodating when my wife wasn’t feeling well and we had to cancel breakfast. Room was spotless and decorated to a high standard and the bed was very comfortable. Dinner at the hotel was great and the dining bar area was very cosy on a cold winter night. We stayed in room 8, right at the top of the building and apart from a low hum of traffic from the main road, it was very quiet and relaxing.
Very steep winding steps up to the rooms at the top of the building. Not suitable for anyone with walking disabilities or heavy suitcases. Other levels were fine.
