Lovely big room & bathroom. Loved wood staircase, the beams the farmhouse style furniture. The bathroom was large. Loved the bathroom door, shower cubicle & tiles. The pub downstairs is great. Love the old farmhouse look of it all. Just needs a closer look at the finishing touches.
The blinds in the window don't keep the light out & look cheap. The mattress & pillows could be better. The mattress was hard, pillows were lumpy. Bathroom door doesn't close. The fnishing touches in the bathroom could be better. Pipes behind the sink pedestal should be covered. Could use a corner shelf next to the sink.
Parking, staff and breakfast.
Breakfast selection was disappointing. No fresh fruit or cerials to start
The room we were given had a shower that didn’t work. A balustrade that was unsafe (by a step adjacent to the sink) and the springs on the bed were broken. Our room was changed after 2 days
Design and feel of the hotel. Heritage building, but also modern in style and comfort. A nice mix of the two. Quirky heritage details with excellent facilities. In a nice town with good facilities.
Local was very central for visiting Oakham and the breakfast was extremely good.
Overly bulky and peeling furniture in the room which made it feel small and over crowded. Also the windows are very low and overlooked a small housing estate to the rear. If we didn't have the blinds down we could be seen by people in their gardens hanging out their washing. I thought the room would be in the main building. There was also noise from the laundry underneath and I you could feel the vibration of the washing machine spinning until at least midnight. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the room. The carpet on the stairs up to the room is also ripped on a few of the steps and could be a trip hazard. It just comes over as a little unloved and overpriced for what was charged.
Great location in the heart of Oakham, good secure shed to store our bikes overnight. Excellent breakfast. Very good, friendly and attentive staff.
Floors were very creaky, and outside noises went on until late in the night
It was perfect location fir us to visit the flower show ... less than 10 minutes away
The only ting we would change would be the addtion of some sort of shelving in room one in the bathroom... there was no where to put toiletry bags ... only the floor and behind the sink taps ... otherwise everything else was spot on
Great central Oakham location. Food and staff were great. Lovely clean and spacious room
Parking in Oakham is not great. There is a small car park at the hotel but you have to get there early to ensure a parking space. The bed wasn’t very comfortable
Very nice staff and good location. Very enjoyable breakfast and good evening meal.
Our room was lovely and clean but the furniture was tired and the mattress very tired!! Such a great room which could be so so much more comfortable.
The hotel is on the high street of Oakham ,near all requirements. The hotel also has rooms in an annex at the rear. The food and very good ,as was the service, The staff were friendly and efficient..

Yet another great stay, really lovely food staff and room we are back next year.
Staff vert helpful, thought perhaps at breakfast a table/tables could have had cereals, bread and a toaster
Our room (9) Windows in bathroom were full of mould
The room was comfortable and the shower was hot. The staff were friendly.. Drinks were good.
We find the wooden chairs and benches are not very comfortable for relaxing in the evening. We were disappointed with the choice of only sour dough bread at breakfast which we don't like, so had no bread or toast at breakfast. There was lots of choice of other items for breakfast but no choice of bread.
Helpful staff.
Nothing
The bed was incredibly comfortable and the shower was very good. The food particularly the breakfast was excellent.
There was a bright green exit light over my bedroom door which kept me awake so I had to put towels over it. And my room was on the front of the hotel so it was very noisy. I wasn’t made particularly welcome in the restaurant and was told that they were very busy but would make room for me. I have attached a video of the completely empty restaurant.
Lovely spacious room and bathroom. Central location, with easy access to the railway. Tasty breakfast in a quaint location.
The mattress in the Queen Suite has seen better days. Needs replacing as mattress springs ensure a restless nights sleep. Pillows are also lumpy and uncomfortable.
The breakfast and location were excellent, the staff were helpful and courteous.
Due to the age of the building the stairs were very steep and the rooms were on the smallish side.
The place is in the center, the staff is great
Room was querky ,rustic and cosy. Nice and clean with a kettle in the room. Bathroom was nice. Breakfast was very nice and the staff helpful and pleasant. Situated in the center of Oakham and parking at the rear.
The breakfast was delicious, I had the full English . The sausage and bacon were excellent quality, eggs poached to perfection and really good sour dough toast, along with tomatoes , hash browns and mushrooms. There were lighter items on offer as well as a vegetarian version of a full English.
I’ll be honest , I couldn’t find fault with my stay. Staff were polite and helpful. The bar was well stocked and had local ales.
Lovely room, nice and clean
Breakfast too over an hour to serve and the waitress that morning was rather rude. My television didn’t work and I asked twice for it to be fixed- but it wasn’t
Great location. Parking on site. Very pleasant staff.
Lovely pub with great food with really comfortable and clean room. Breakfast was outstanding and very friendly staff.
Like others car park is hard to find. Look for a pedestrian crossing opposite Tesco’s there’s an arch in between houses. There is a small sign above the arch.
Excellent breakfast, and very clean.
So quaint and cosy - fabulous property. The dining room is just lovely with a nice big garden - weather inclement so couldn’t use it but it’s lovely.
Nothing to not like
Really enjoyed our stay, we weren’t rushed to leave after our meal whilst meeting relatives.lovely friendly staff.
Great location. We had a lovely welcome and the staff were really friendly. We had a lovely room complete with a four poster bed. We dined at the pub and had a lovely meal, great food. It was a shame we didn’t stay longer!
Nothing
Great hotel in centre of Oakham. Good restaurant and friendly staff.
Location and friendly staff
Lovely staff. Great room - very clean and bed comfortable. Good Dinner and Breakfast. Unfortunately I couldn't get a Wi-Fi but my Husband did.
Could have done with the postcode for the car park before we travelled. Drove round 5 times looking for it! Once U went in and spoke to someone and he gave me it, fantastic!
Location
Carpark difficult to find. Bed was awful. Room needs deep clean. Breakfast was cooked food. No cereal. If you want speciality coffee you have to pay more even if you only want egg on toast.
Good choice for breakfast. Nice outside space. Near to other pubs and restaurants and shops
It was ok
Nor everybody likes sourdough bread for breakfast. Choice should be provided !
It had history. Ideally placed for our needs. Clean, welcoming and cosy. Car park is difficult to find.
Nothing
The room was very clean and I loved the fact that proper size bath sheets were provided. The breakfast was exceptional to the point I am still thinking about it 4 days later! The bacon was superb.
The stairs approaching the rooms is threadbare and doesn’t provide a very good first impression. And the parking. This was very difficult to find and was already full by late afternoon on a Sunday. The alternative was paid for parking a 10 minute walk away. (Although it is free on a Sunday we needed to pay from 8am on Monday morning)
Excellent!
Nothing.
Beautiful quaint old hotel with lots of old furniture and original stone walls and features Location was excellent, staff were lovely
Difficult to gain access to the room post closing times ( 2300pm)
Quaint old property. Center of town. Nice decor & layout. Rooms comfortable. Good breakfast & service.
After hours access into hotel. Got no warning doors are locked at a certain hour. We stayed out till 12am one night & 11.30 another night, got back to find front door locked. Couldn’t make a call as phone battery had died!!! Lucky we saw someone still inside cleaning up & they let us in. Pillows are lumpy. Maybe need to upgrade.
Lovely 2 night stay, small but cosy room… everything that we needed including a fan as it was a really hot time. Breakfast was excellent, good choice and great quality. Friendly and helpful staff….
Even though the room was cosy and clean, it could maybe do with a lick of paint especially on the skirting board which was quite badly stained and marked. There was also quite a large stain on the bedroom carpet that needs attention….
Great location on the high st. Lovely breakfast. Clean spacious room and comfy bed.
Nowhere secure to leave my luggage for a couple of hours after checkout.
Spacious room and shower. Excellent cooked breakfast.
Staff were great particularly James(manager) and Beth(supervisor). A great credit to the Hotel. Breakfast excellent.
PARKING. You arrive back and their is no access to car park. Double parking and cars abandoned!! Residents get no priority. Easily solved by having one side Residents parking only.
The room was compact, but it had everything that was needed. Ideal for a short stay. Lovely large shower. Excellent location right in the town. The breakfast choice was excellent for the price we paid. Staff very friendly.
We didn't realise there was a room above until we heard lots of creaking floorboards from people walking about the room. Unfortunately, they woke very early in the morning!
Traditional pub, good beer, good food , excellent staff
I’ve have lived in Oakham for many years and was looking forward to going back to visit my family and staying in The Hornblower for the first time. I’ve been here many times for drinks and meals and always considered it to be the best hotel in Oakham. Good points are the location, the ambiance, the breakfast is wonderful and James the hotel manager is really very nice and helpful.
Well, I paid a greater price for a double room for single occupancy. The room the gave me was very nice indeed….except the industrial ventilation extractor fan outlet is directly outside the room’s French doors. It sounded like a diesel locomotive and made peaceful rest and sleep impossible. The hotel manager, James, moved me to an attic room in the annex. This room had a sloping ceiling which had to constantly be ducked under to avoid injury. The room suffered electrical failure three times, not good as the free standing fan also stopped. I reported this to James who did reset a circuit breaker. The bed mattress and pillows were the worst I can remember in recent years. Totally uncomfortable springs, lumpy pillows. There is no way this room can be charged for at the price I paid. My entire trip to Oakham was soured by my experience in The Hornblower.
Nice room, quiet location away from the bar.
Not much to dislike. It was as advertised.
L’habitació i el bany.
The location was excellent, close to restaurants and the breakfast was outstanding. How nice to sit down and have breakfast brought to you and the choices were amazing. There was an issue with the booking company but James sorted out the problem and we had a lovely room
Following the satnav takes you there but finding the car park at the back was a challenge. There is a separate postcode to ask for before you go. Looks like your going into private housing but leads to The Captain Hornblower car park.
Historic building on High Street and convenient for exploring Oakham
Garden was a bit scruffy.
I think that the owner should sleep in all the rooms as a customer to really live the experience. I can accept if furnishings are tired but the bed was exceedingly uncomfortable and well past its sell by date. There were a lot of maintenance issues that if dealt with would have improved the overall experience. Just very disappointing for the cost.

Clean and tidy.
We couldn’t find the car park until we were leaving. It would have been nice to be told where is was when we checked in and asked
Very comfortable bed. Shower had good water pressure and was spacious. Breakfast was fantastic. Had choice of real ale from local brewery at the bar.
Some noise outside window as looked out on high street. Was advised that breakfast was from 7.30 to 10, went down at 8am and had to wait for 15 minutes as staff not their yet. However gave stayed here a few times before and other rooms are not as noisy .
Room good, facilities good, food good except breakfast had no fruit / cereal option. Staff excellent.
Accomodation looking a bit tired. A bit of TLC required.
Comfortable room and great breakfast - good value for money
Car park difficult to find
The best salmon and scrambled eggs ever tasted. Fish & chips, cosy atmosphere and to top it all Timothy Taylors Landlord ; could not be better. Many thanks to all staff, especially Sami.
No fault of the hotel but car screaming up and down the high street at midnight.
Excellent location in the centre of Oakham
Above and beyond expectations for the price we paid ,lovely room little extras not expected at the price fabulous breakfast menu
Perfect location
Car park is at the back of the hotel and was a little difficult to locate
Clean room, good bedding
The room was well presented. There were period features and a nice, modern shower room. The breakfast was very good and staff were friendly.
I like to sleep in dark rooms. There was a roller blind but it wasn't black out. That is only my opinion, and I wouldn't mark it against the accommodation. I had packed an eye mask.
Good central location
The room was very noisy, there is a large extractor from the kitchen just outside. There are stairs nearby, also noisy. Fire doors are propped open and used as a staff entrance, but anyone could just walk in. Ditto with access from pub itself. Fire escape which passes the room can be accessed by public. Whole place not very secure.
Lovely property with a great rural feel to it. Facilities were great restaurant was fantastic staff were so helpful and kind
N/a
Good brekky, nice location, nice quirky room
Usual hotel gripe - the shower head nipples need a lime scale removal - this never seems to get done anywhere - why? Annexe stair carpet needs replacing!
Central location in Oakham
Decor a bit tired.
Staff are very helpful & efficient
2nd time i have mentioned this & if this is the only fault I have not that bad, you need to put blinds up on the windows in the 1st floor across the car park just to light in the summer, velux sell them 😉
The location perfect for us. Breakfast was brilliant. An old pub with character and parking to the rear of the property.
The only issue was the blind was broken which meant no prevention of light coming through the window once it was daylight, they were waiting for someone to sort it.
All good
Nothing
It was a perfect location for the weekend, the staff were very nice and freindly we enjoyed our stay.
The location was perfect for our needs.
Parking location food
Windows in our room wouldn’t stay open blind was rubbish and no fans in the hot weather
Location was ideal, breakfast was very enjoyable.
Staff although polite seemed distracted, the breakfast was exceptional but took rather a long time nearly an hour
Excellent sized room and ensuite. Sat in the beer garden inthe evening, good to see the locals coming in for drinks and food. The pizza wd shared was very good. Excellent breakfast. Great value for money.
Excellent breakfast: all cooked to order, generous plates, and a good variety of choices.
Our room smelled a little damp: there were no windows which we could open .
Dudnt stay for breakfast was left some crosses the staff were amazing went the extra mile will certainly stay again
Nothing it was perfect
Location
Tired x threadbare carpet on staircase. Stains on carpet in room . Fan not working in bathroom generally shabby
Great character traditional, good ensuite, great breakfast options
Finding the car park is like going on a treasure hunt, and its small, carpet on hallway to our room very worn
Breakfast excellent, location couldn’t be better
Change the mind bending background music. Better with none.
Location, ambience
Location was perfect being in the middle of town. Parking at the back. Nice little pub and food was excellent but pricey! We had room with single beds, lovely nights sleep. Breakfast was very nice and filling. The little cleaning lady was very nice, she greeted us as we went for breakfast and she waved us off with a beaming smile when we left. 🙋♀️
Only thing that was bad was the thread bare carpet on the stairs up to the room and creaky stairs..
Great location, nice room & clean. Lovely staff. Excellent atmosphere. ...and slept like a log, the bed was super comfortable!
Nothing.
Great staff and a nice breakfast
In the centre of Oakham.
There is a carpark at the rear but it is hard to find and very poor signage. Phone for directions.
The hotel location is good, right in the middle of town. Great location to visit Oakham Castle & museum, Stamford, Rutland water and surrounding villages. The staff were helpful and the breakfasts were excellent.
Room 8 was very close to & overlooked by houses and their car park. The bin for the bar bottles and the laundry room were directly below the room. The room is an attic and even with the fan on all night was unbearably hot in the heatwave. We moved to bigger room 5 which was above the kitchen and a bit better location but still very hot due to the heatwave and a bit noisy due to the kitchen extractor vent.
Clean and staff friendly
Loud as on the high street
Great pub with a lovely garden and lovely staff. Very comfortable rooms but it was very hot as we were in a heatwave (we did have a fan though)! Loved the big towels and great shower.
Great location great food
I met a business colleague for a meal Tues Eve as i stay there a few times per year. The food service was really poor - the server never once smiled or chatted to us checked to see if all was ok .... We felt like we were an irritant to her ,it was a little embarrassing as i had invited a guest. It was a busy night due to the football in the other bars however i mentioned the complete lack of service and any engagement. When paying my bill of over £90 for pub food that was as always really nice ... to the food manager he simply apologized and just brushed it off without concern or addressing my complaint at all .Will look for other places to stay locally when visiting.
Convenient location. Good shower. Comfortable beds. Pleasant staff.
Uncomfortable seating in dining areas for older people.. A few armchairs would be good. Too hot in the bedroom but it was during a heatwave on this occasion.
Ideal accommodation in the centre of Oakham with a small car park for probably 6 cars. Had a quiet nights sleep in a comfortable room. Luckily there was a fan in the room which kept the heat bearable. The pub/hotel is a lovely traditional pub serving excellent food and has a wide range of drinks available.
Nothing
The room was clean and looked quite fresh. Spacious and plenty of light. I hadn't realised how old the property was, which was a bonus. There was a gentleman who looked after us at breakfast, really excellent host. I didn't take his name, but he really looked after us. Really lovely garden area and parking to the rear. This was not the easiest to find, just ask behind the bar and they will give you the postcode.
The room was really hot! There was a fan in the room, but maybe worth having more? I do understand that it's an old building and the hotelier doesn't control the weather.
Breakfast was excellent. Nice choices, fresh produce, plenty of it. Location was lovely, centrally placed in the quaint market town. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Since it was summer and light quite ate curtains or blinds on the velux windows would have been good.
Great location, lovely pub, clean, comfortable room
