Excellent food in the restaurant
Nice site
Seagull noise was excessive, extra charging for more than basic coffees unreasonable
Our room overlooked the harbour and is perfectly located.
Everything was perfect
View from bedroom
Stairs down to toilet and shower room
We had a lovely view from our room
The service was mostly by young inexperienced staff who needed guidance. The room had water and milk provided - a small fridge would not have gone amiss and there was plenty of space to put one. Bed was enormous but very hard as were the pillows
Everything was wonderful
Nothing
We had a fantastic time at the Old Quay House. The hotel is centrally located, near to shops, bars and harbour. We had a Superior room with a view of the estuary. Balcony is just big enough to stand on, but offered fab views. Room was quite small, but very well decorated, with everything you could ask for. Complimentary toiletries were excellent quality, as was the breakfast, which was delicious. Terrace at back had wonderful views, and was perfect to relax on. All of the staff were helpful and friendly. Room was quite expensive, but worth it. Highly recommended
Bathroom in our room , number 9, was nice, but accessed via a stairway with 5 steps. Fine for us, but be mindful for people with limited mobility. Room is also on 2nd floor, and hotel didn’t have a lift. Nothing that spoilt our stay though.
Hotel molto pulito camere spaziose con vista sul piccolo porto. Il ristorante propone piatti diversi dei soliti ristoranti della zona.Personale simpatico e presente.
Quality place brilliant staff amazing location
Lots of stairs
The staff were all delightful and helpful. The room was cosy and the "glimpse" view of the estuary was appreciated.
Charging for a decent cup of coffee at breakfast I consider to be penny-pinching. If breakfast is included in the room rate (it was), then provide a decent cup of coffee! The cafetière coffee was watery and almost undrinkable. The cappuccino was okay - but you had to pay extra. My wife is partially disabled and there were an awful lot of stairs to reach the room, although I appreciate that installing a lift would be a step to far in that building.
Smallish, boutique hotel, nicely furnished, very clean, friendly staff.
No parking but this is not unusual in Fowey’s narrow streets.
Great location. Good hotel. Seafood nice. We had a lovely bedroom with view of harbour and boats. Like the sound of seagull’s. Good staff. Only down side. Is. No lift and no car park. Very busy town and very hilly. Not a place to go if in wheelchair . In my opinion
The highlight was to sit on the decking and watch the activity amongst the boats. Waterfront view, quite relaxing.
Excellent location, food, and service
Challenging for an 80 year old, shower over bath, steep stairs, no air-conditioning, no fridge in the rooms, and no safe.
Super hotel in a wonderful position . Excellent restaurant facilities and a terrace on the water edge
the room was lovely and the view from the terrace was breathtaking -overall really good location
the reception staff were friendly but the restaurant staff were poorly trained and the breakfast was very average with clearly quite low quality ingredients which I would not expect at this level of hotel. We decided not to dine here for dinner despite the really lovely location.
Perfect location
No elevator No full amenities in bathroom
Beautiful room and well situated in the heart of Fowey.
A dog was left in the neighbouring room and was howling till late at night, which was a shame! Not the hotels fault though.
Posizione e vista camera
Servizio più attento e cortese
To sit out on the decking, relaxing and watching the small boat activity in Fowey. Beautiful view
Position.Food.Cleanliness and the rear outside bar
The most iconic location in Cornwall, the accomodation and the staff are perfect, the athmosphere is magic. A wonderfull stay
The guest room leaves much to be desired and certainly for the rate charged for a street facing room, where the early morning cacophony of garbage trucks provide an unwelcome wake up! The bed was undoubtedly the firmest and most uncomfortable bed and the pillows were the worst ever encountered: why is it that a hotel, whose sole function is to provide sleeping accommodation does not ensure that the bed and bedding are of the highest quality? The pillows were as solid as sandbags so probably had never been replaced...ugh! The bathroom was fresh and adequate but NO GRAB BARS for safety in a shower over tub set up. Equally no shower mat in the tub so a dangerous combination, especially for older guests. Before booking, be aware that this is an old building with only stairs to the guest rooms.
Very friendly polite. Room what we expected. Clean all the amenities you need.
Nothing
This hotel is located in the centre of Fowey and has a nice balcony with beautiful view. The food is good. Our room was classic double but it was small and no room for suitcases. There was a fan in the room but not enough for the warm summer we had.
We went to the hotel twice for drinks early evening. The terrace offers beautiful views of the harbour and is a lovely setting. The food looks really good (we saw one couple eating on our first visit) despite every other table being free, we were told we couldn’t have dinner as they were fully booked. We were told by a local to try and get in but warned the hotel doesn’t like to have too many tables occupied and to expect to be turned away even if capacity isn’t an issue, but still we were surprised. The second time we went early evening (6pm) and we asked if we could eat, and despite no one else eating we were told the hotel wasn’t accepting walk ins as the chefs were too hot, appreciate we’ve have exceptionally warm weather but the restaurant was empty on both occasions. We felt the approach wasn’t very accommodating and not reflective of being located in a busy holiday area where people are looking for somewhere to eat. The staff must be turning away 100’s of people a week. Such a shame, and missed opportunity for this restaurant to welcome more people into its restaurant when sitting there empty.
Fabulous bar overlooking Fowey harbour. Complete suntrap. Very friendly staff, dog friendly. The make a lovely Hugo Spritz. Didn’t eat as lunch was just finishing as we arrived.
Location by the water
In a prime location on one of the main streets of Fowey and fronting onto the estuary, the hotel promises much but in our case delivered little. The website shows a bed with a comfortable looking upholstered bed head in room 1 but what was there was a modern ugly iron bedstead which I kept banging my head against, and a bed base with the top supporting slat missing giving us an uncomfortable first night, fortunately fixed on the second day of our stay but without apology or offer of even a drink in compensation .Additionally there were stains on the carpet which needed a good clean. There are two largish chests of drawers either side of the bed which are too high for bedside tables and make the room look smaller. The room was noisy so you need ear plugs. I have never heard such noisy seagulls. , We were unable to eat because the restaurant was fully booked. I appreciate that the more expensive rooms probably receive more care but I can only speak for the room we were given.
The ground floor reception, dining and rear terrace have recently been renovated and were excellent
the hotel is in the process of renovating all the bedrooms but the bedrooms at the front, facing the street, which included our room are dated and noise through the old windows loud
Great location, beautifully decorated. Comfortable beds, lovely restaurant and bar. Delicious food too!
The noise from the street was a very slight irritation.
From the time we walked in we were made so welcome we sat outside on the beautiful terrace at first but decided to sit inside to eat as the seagulls were on the hunt which is not the hotels fault they were so accommodating finding us a place to sit the waitress was so lovely she chatted with us I think she was Spanish I wish I could remember her name but I did tell the manager how lovely she was the food was beautiful we all had fish and chips . Then we finished our meal we asked if we could go out on the terrace and again so lovely they made our day wonderful and the view to die for thank you so much to all the staff for the experience so relaxing 🤩🤩 you are all stars 🌟
Location, staff, terrace view, good restaurant bar with friendly staff throughout.
The bedroom fan hinge was broken and the fan small and ineffective
Great location, amazing views, good service and all round high quality experience. Would strongly recommend
Great location and an old fashioned charm combined with excellent service. No parking but unloading directly outside acceptable and car parks not too far away. The views to the estuary are awesome although it’s unlikely you’ll get a great view from your bedroom as the windows are in the corner. However, the disappointment I felt, having specifically asked for a great view, was lessened by the lovely staff and excellent service. The room was large, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom luxurious. If I had a slight niggle it’s that the open wardrobe could have been located in less obvious eye-line. Laying in bed everything is on display. The stairs are steep - we were on the second floor- and the small set to access the room had no handrail. Coffee machine in room. Cleanliness outstanding. Now for the breakfast! The best bacon I’ve ever eaten and the breakfasts were individually served and were amazingly good. A beautifully run small hotel and although we didn’t get to eat there the evening menu looked great. All in all a great stay.
Firstly, a lovely, well presented hotel with a great restaurant, high quality fixtures & fittings and in a very central location in Fowey. However, the website is sadly lacking in realistic detail about the room we booked… We booked what we believed was a good quality room (The Quay View) which has a wonderful vista of the water from the main windows.. Firstly, what isn’t clear on the website is that it is around 50 stairs/steps up to the room from the ground floor and there is no lift. This should be made clear on the website as it would definitely prove a challenge for some guests.. Secondly and something we were frustrated about - it had no wardrobe or clothes hanging space - just a few drawers and hooks on the back of the door! We had booked for 5 nights so had a decent amount of luggage so it was a problem for us and clearly would be for any guests staying longer than a few nights… We spoke to the manager about it and requested a different room but the hotel was full - he said he would mention it to ‘head office’ and confirmed he had done so before we left at the end of our stay.. Finally, the description of the the outside space of the room was sadly inaccurate - it states on the website “ separate small side balcony, perfect for a restful morning coffee by the water” in reality it is a quite grubby, tiny space with a bit of dated and wobbly decking and a messy wall directly in front of it (admittedly, with a view of the water to the side.) Nesting seagulls offered an interesting aroma and background albeit they were behind a dated and weathered screen at the one end.. Images attached for complete transparency of our review - rest assured, morning coffee in the space would not be pleasant and certainly not restful…. Again, a more accurate description on the website would be useful.. Breakfast was lovely and dinner in the restaurant was excellent (book in advance as it gets very busy..) The water facing terrace at the front of the restaurant is quite superb… We wouldn’t recommend the room we had but feel the hotel has so much going for it - we just wish the website had been clearer and we would have changed the room and then, no doubt, had a wonderful stay..
Fantastic location overlooking Fowey river. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent.
A small refrigerator in each room would be a cheap and welcome addition especially as fresh milk and water is provided each day.
We love this hotel but unfortunately no parking. The nearest car park was about 15 mins walk away. Also no lift & many stairs. We had an upgrade so had half a view of the river which was nice. Our ensuite was down six steps. My husband fell in the shower as no shower mat, (he was ok!) so I asked reception for slip mat, supplied promptly. Breakfast was good but I had the Eggs Benedict and the eggs were excellent but chef did not toast the muffin or maybe it looked at grill! This spoilt my breakfast as it was like eating eggs on bread! Told a staff member who offered me something else. It was not busy at that time , 2 other couples . Despite this I recommend the hotel. A drink or 2 on their patio with a good book is the best place in Fowey! Staff were great, friendly but not overbearing. Lovely comfy bed & decor. I would stay again but only on first floor regardless of cost.
Beautiful right on the estuary, fabulous views, very clean and modern decor
small hotel with a nice restaurant with a view over the quay - nice enough for an overnight stay in Fowys. We had three rooms - the quay view room on the 3rd floor seemed slightly overpriced for the size but the classic rooms with no water view seemed better value. Also, with hindsight, we would have preferred to leave our main luggage in the car, parked and walked to the hotel with just an overnight bag as drop off/pick up of luggage was a bit of a pain on the tiny streets and there is no lift.
Very central, great views from our bedroom.
Nothing
Location - by the estuary, near the Eden Project and in the centre of the town
Lack of car parking spaces next to hotel
Lovely spot to stay. The deck overlooking the water is truly delightful for views and a sunset glass of wine.
Lage und Sicht auf den Hafen
Kein Parkplatz, Lärm vom Restaurant, sehr ringhörig, Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis stimmt nicht
Wunderschön gelegen, sehr herzlicher Empfang. Schönes Zimmer mit Blick auf den Fluss
Das Frühstück hätte etwas besser sein können. Als kaffeetrinker musste man die Augen zudrücken.
I could find no fault at all. very pleasantly surprised. and the view from the restaurant simply wonderful.. well done chef. probably the best fish & chips I have ever eaten
nothinng
Staff was welcoming to this cyclist on a wet day. Room was large and clean. Shower hot and good pressure. Nice coffee and teas in room. Comfortable bed with quality linens. Excellent breakfast. CLEAN as could be.
Loved the location and the staff were excellent.
Lovely hotel, right on the Main Street of Fowey & a terrace at the back overlooking the estuary. Clean & modern inside & lovely staff. Apart from finding the bed a little firm we had a great stay & would recommend 😊
🙏
The hotel and staff were exceptional in every way The food was outstanding Our room was beautiful with the most amazing views
Could not fault anything
Great stay; good choice for breakfast Hotel is in an amazing location overlooking the river
Food was amazing at the Hotel staff in Restaurant so polite & helpful reception staff a little frosty bar staff amazing. The room was a bit on the small side for us.
Room a bit on the small side and no fridge
Rooms were large and the Hotel was dog friendly
Excellent boutique hotel in a cracking location. Wonderful terrace overlooking the estuary serving great cocktails, wine and beer. The food was exceptional - suggest the lobster every time. Wonderful friendly staff throughout the hotel.
Location, breakfast, facilities
Curtains in bedroom difficult to close.
This is a very friendly and welcoming hotel. The staff are efficient and extremely professional. Nothing is too much trouble.
Food was superb, both breakfast and dinner. Staff were friendly and efficient. Place was very clean, comfy and quiet. Room was well presented and bed was firm which we liked. Plenty of hanging space. Luxury bathroom, plenty of towels and toiletries.Great location being central in town with views overlooking estuary.
Found out after the event, needed to run bath for 10 mins before yellow water turns clear. Had no phone in room to ring reception as had not yet been installed since refurbishment. There was no bar or fridge in the room which is surprising for a top room at this price.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Old Quay House. Food to die for. Very helpful and friendly staff in every way. Very comfortable room. We hope to return in September.
Right on the edge of the water, if you were lucky enough to get one of those rooms, but we didn’t! The Samphire Restaurant was exceptional, with a very classy menu and a chef that delivered exactly what was advertised! We had dinner there after wandering around the town looking at options and were so glad we did. Breakfast was also delicious and the staff were wonderful.
Parking was an issue and it’s a bit of a trek back to the hotel from where one can park. You need to be organized when you pull up outside to drop off your bags as the traffic will back up behind you in the narrow street. Our room was advertised as having a street view but in reality we only had a view into the neighbors room across the very narrow street, as did they into ours. The bed wasn’t great but the linen was clean and smart.
Friendly staff, nice clean comfortable rooms. Great location by the river.
Nothing
A really lovely accommodation. Everything was lovely except the street view! The streets are so historically narrow that the street view is the neighbours. The restaurant is absolutely fantastic and we had the best meal of our trip. The breakfast is pure luxury m Highly recommend.
Location was excellent, breakfast was good.
Going up and down the stairs a couple of times a day. We were on the second floor, so four flights of steps! No lift, not good on my knees.
A lovely hotel in Fowey with very personal service. I travelled solo for business and felt very well looked after as a woman on my own. The food at Samphire, the restaurant, was excellent. Views from the terrace are lovely, and the hotel is in a really convenient location. Even the street facing rooms aren't too noisy as there is limited traffic going down the street - the only thing that might wake you up is the seagulls. That said it could be different in peak season. I can't really fault this place, and would come back. I had a great stay.
Fantastic position lovely room
Was advertised as a loft suite when we got there was only a bedroom & no lounge
Old Quay House in Fowey is a true gem. A charming boutique hotel perfectly set on the water, right on the main street, surrounded by lovely shops and great restaurants. The location couldn’t be better. The hotel itself is spotless, beautifully maintained, and runs with exceptional attention to detail. The service stands out professional yet warm, with a team that genuinely cares and goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome. The restaurant and terrace are a highlight, offering a fantastic atmosphere to relax and enjoy the views. And if you’re travelling with dogs, this place gets it right dogs are treated like royalty and are welcome throughout the hotel, which makes the stay even more enjoyable. A perfect blend of comfort, style, and genuine hospitality.
the spot and view
room facilities
Great location, small but comfortable room, lovely terrace overlooking the river
Soulless restaurant and having to pay for a cappuccino at breakfast!
Gorgeous small hotel right by the river with a great view of the harbour. Staff were very friendly and breakfast was lovely with lots of choice. My room was very clean and comfortable - double bed with tea and coffee making facilities. Bathroom was lovely with nice toiletries.
Fantastic location in the centre of a charming Cornish village
Nothing..all great
Couldn’t recommend this little boutique hotel enough! The staff are absolutely lovely, the rooms are beautiful, and you walk right out in the middle of the town centre. We also had dinner here and the food was amazing!!!!
Our room didn’t have aircon but it was okay - we had a nice breeze come in through the windows :)
Proprio al centro del paese, stupendo, con personale gentile e disponibile ! Colazione ottima
We were there for a wedding, the two main staff members who looked after us (sorry their names escape me) were utterly fantastic, really, I can't praise them highly enough. We travel a lot for work and stay in all kinds of hotels and eat in all kinds of restaurants, and this type of service is lacking in so many places. It was a pleasant surprise and very much noted. The food was great, location stunning and everywhere spotlessly clean. The room was lovely, it was very well equipped with plenty of good sized towels, a lovely bath, plenty of coat hooks (again a small touch that is so often missing!) We loved it. We were the only wedding guests who actually live in Cornwall, so it's unlikely we'll stay again, but we will definitely bring friends for food and very definitely recommend it. Thank you.
It really was perfect, but a very tiny thing.... I had to move the beside cabinet to plug in the kettle which wasn't ideal.
A really lovely stay at a clean, comfortable, peaceful and friendly hotel. The staff were all very helpful, the breakfasts were lovely. It was great being right by the water with wonderful views and nice to have the town on your doorstep. Not only did we enjoy it but our dog loved it as well
Great location. Lovely room, quiet and restaurant is great. Staff friendly and helpful.
A great stay once again. Perfect location for a stay in Fowey with great staff and great food. Would not hesitate to book a stay here again
Before writing this review, I did read a few previous reviews, and a couple made me grimace – notably the ones complaining about the seagulls. Complaining about seagulls on the coast would be like complaining about getting wet when swimming in the sea! I’m sorry but if you are going to complain about Mother Nature doing her thing… Anyway, whilst I did enjoy the atmospheric cry of the seagulls, it was the very warm welcome that made this a special trip. From Sue on reception, Roxanne serving breakfast and the wonderful front of house, Amy, I was made to feel very welcome, and nothing was too much trouble. Although I only enjoyed breakfast as I had made other dinner arrangements, breakfast was delicious and I will be back for dinner as the menu looked delicious. In short, very happy to recommend and I love the dog friendly nature of the bar, restaurant and cosy rooms. I look forward to returning soon. Thank you Amy and team.
The food and accommodation was great. Male staff went above and beyond. I think he was South African. One night we was late getting in and the kitchen was shutting. He managed to persuade the chef to do us a big bowl of mussels which was amazing!! Very polite on arrival and couldn’t have done more for us.
Young waitress at breakfast both days qas miserable. Breakfast come out, had to ask for toast, and sauce on both days, she wasn’t very happy when asked for the above. Nothing is open on a Sunday. I did kind of think some shops may be open Sunday hours but nothing.
Location excellent, staff friendly and welcoming
Absence of lift to access upper floors. Not too much of a problem although carrying luggage upstairs was a good workout.
Beautiful terrace. Stylish, comfortable bedrooms with individual touches. Warm, friendly staff. Well stocked bar. Lovely ambience. The most delicious breakfast with local produce. Look out for special offers !
Central location was great Room size was wonderful
No sound proofing on windows so room was incredibly noisy. No curtains only Venetian blinds so street lights shone into the room all night Breakfast staff were very grumpy
Hübsches Hotel. Wunderschönes Zimmer unter dem Dach mit Aussicht auf das Meer.
Alles war tipptopp
Centrally located .Great breakfast.
Room was tired carpets badly stained.
Staying at the Old Quay House was such a treat. The staff were incredible - particularly Susannah, the Front of House Manager who went above and beyond to help when there was a travel agency mix-up with my booking. Highly recommended for a business stay.
The room and view amazing. Lovely hotel in general and ine if the best breakfasts we have ever had, staff were all great also. Only gripe was the bed, was like sleeping on a brick, was far too hard and the pillows were too.
As above
Everything was great The staff were friendly and really helpful
Nothing
Amazing location right in the centre of Fowey, great breakfasts and lovely staff team
My room was on the front so would suggest bringing earplugs as can be a little noisy in the evenings
Breakfast was really good
Noise from outside early in the morning
Breakfast and breakfast room were amazing
Having to leave car in carpark 10 minutes walk away
Staff were all very helpful and always on hand to help out with anything. The views from our king room were beautiful. .
Nothing, the hotel was just right
Could not fault this hotel at all. Staff, room, hotel, views and food were all fantastic. Looking to book again in May with visiting friends.
The hotel is in a lovely setting, we really had high hopes and a night away was well earned. Upon check in at the reception desk, I was interrupted by someone wanting the receptionists attention (standing beside the desk, eventually moving behind the receptionist. The person had an ear piece hanging out of their ear & at first I thought it maybe a door person) this was whilst I was handing out my personal details. I paused 'Oh sorry, do you need to interrupt us a moment?' the receptionist said 'oh no its ok, that’s my friend' & continued to check us in (not great for GDPR hey?) We were informed we had been upgraded to a bigger room 'great!' The room was in the attic and therefore 3 flights of stairs (a bit of an assent but fine once up there). We were greeted with a lovely clean room which had a bath in the room, a separate shower and toilet. The issue at first were the rafters, my husband is only 5ft 5 & I'm 5ft 6, we were bending to get around the bottom of the bed where the roof sloped. Forget trying to sit in the lovely decorative chairs which were wedged in the low rafters. Know way of sitting in them apart from the bed. The painting at the bed head could do with another coat of paint as you can see the filler through it, there was complimentary tea bags, biscuits and milk. The milk was in a small glass bottle & although it was labelled as ‘creamy’ it was not kept in a fridge and once we poured it we both changed our minds, it smelt off. The 3 flight of stairs on the decent needs addressing, the carpet was loose and dangerous in places. We entered the bar for a drink on the beautiful decking that overlooks the water. However, we didn't get approached from the two members of staff & after a while we headed back in to ask for drinks ourselves at the bar. We ordered a cocktail each and sat at the window in the bar area. The lady making the cocktails didn't seem confident in the measurements, therefore the cocktails were very strong of the alcohol and you couldn't taste any of the other flavours – so we didn’t order any more. My husband eventually took our empty glasses up to the bar (we wanted to order a bottle of wine & wasn't being served). He mentioned the very loud (constant) noise that was coming from behind the bar. He suggested it maybe the compressor from the drinks fridge, the staff member commented 'Oh it’s been like that for a couple of days, I don't know what it is' We went up to our room and came back down for dinner. We ordered the bread
Comfortable hotel with friendly and helpful staff, cosy atmosphere. Great location on the river in the centre of town. Good restaurant, limited menu choice for vegetarians however kitchen very accommodating. Ice cream a good choice for dessert!
Great location, upgraded room excellent, great food, helpful and friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone wanting to visit Fowey
Lovely place to stay, staff are lovely
Very comfortable room, great location, food was good and staff friendly
Bathroom floor tiles had loose or missing grout
Absolutely fantastic location, right on the river. Our room was recently renovated and super plush. It was spotlessly clean and incredibly comfortable. We had a river view and it was worth paying extra for it as it was stunning. It was a real drag to leave the place. Breakfast was delicious and worth adding on to our stay. I would 100% book the same room again.
As it’s attached to a restaurant and the reception wasn’t always open it wasn’t clear who to talk to with questions etc. There were a lot of different staff working during our stay and no one greeted us as we came and went so we didn’t really make a connection with the place. Breakfast was delicious but not consistent - make sure you ask for toast and OJ if you’re not offered any.
