Good breakfast and breakfast staff v good.
Very shabby. Expensive for what they offer
The location was very good.
Not clean at all room was very dirty. The entrance is up one flight of very steep steps. As an alternative you may enter the lower level to access the elevator. The lower level was really scary and filthy. I contacted customer service but never heard from them
The location was good
The toilets were filthy, the carpet stained and uneven, the doors were grimy, the price was outrageous for what we got. Shocked that the hotel can continue considering the state of it. Don't stay even as a last resort
Location, food friendliness of staff
Checking out
All aspects of this run down hotel.
Staff friendly very helpful very professional when dealing with things no stress very polite
Nothing
Beautiful grand building
The stairs on entrance I am disabled we had heavy cases and real struggle to get up these stairs. No other way in yet description on booking.com said hotel accessible. Also told couldn’t reserve parking yet all spaces reserved on arrival by use of blue cones. Photographs and details are misleading not possible to see steep entrance steps and no disabled access
Dejlig beliggenhed og ok morgenmad. Senge, dyner, puder og sengelinned var ok. Heldigvis.
Location was good, bar staff were friendly and accommodating.
The whole hotel (apart from ground floor) was very runned down. All other floors had paint peeling off walls and general lack of maintenance. rooms were small, our room had what appeared to be a new shower cubicle (no bath) installed. Hubby however, could barely fit through the shower screen door - to narrow! Reception staff (apart from one gentleman) were unfriendly and a request for an iron took hours and 3 requests.
Comfortable and great views
No-one cleaned the room
Breakfast good.
Rather noisy.
Great location. Easy to find.
Way too overpriced for what it is. Everything was very dirty and disappointing. Feel a bit scammed to be honest.
Nice staff on reception. Nice fresh room with new bathroom. Lovely breakfast. Lovely welcome tray in room with a nice biscuit too.
Didnt realise i had to pay for parking in hotel grounds (£10). Tv wouldnt work, the receptionist did come up and tried to get it tuned in to no avail, i actually was not too bothered as i liķe it for background noise and i had a book to read. No hand soap nor shower gel in en suite, went down to reception and got some plus there were no Scaffolding outside bedroom window . Bedroom window was open on arrival and held open with a small piece of woodwedged to keep it open😖
Lovely location
Shower was pathetic
Location
Tv had no channels, room was hot and window would not stay open, so was uncomfortable
Nothing. Worst stay of my life. Emailed and ignored. Lots of pictures to follow
Smelly, falling apart, dirty, awful decor, not cleaned.
Dont like how the take you credit card details so they can charge for breakages and £10 payment required for parking. Never had to do this in any other hotel in oban.
Staff were as helpful as they could be.
Lack of hot water. Rubbish bag left in room when we arrived.
Great location and the team were super friendly.
The hotel is old and very tired. Decor is worn and in need to change. Bathroom was old, rusty and taps broken. Sink behind the door which had a large hole in to because it was difficult to enter / exit without hitting it. Paintwork marked all over. General standard was poor, needs updating.
Location is good on the sea front. Parking available for free but is limited on a first come basis.
Hotel is very tired No drinks service to the table for dinner. You were expected you get you own drinks for the bar and bring them to the table.
The hotel was OK the room was standard size , had all the usual facilities.
The TV did not work too well with just an indoor aeriel. The bathroom was a bit dingey with dirty silicone sealant and needed updating . The whole hotel felt in need of a bit of TLC
The position of the hotel
Room was comfortable but needed a bit of updating. Breakfast was ok
Everything was ok but hotel needing an overhaul it is very tired.
clealiness, friendliness. decor, quality of food
The staff were friendly and helpful
A very tired building that is well past its prime. We were in the top rooms and the walls shook when the wind blew. Reallly in need over a complete update and refurb
Nice location
Pay for parking and very tired and rundown hotel
We had a great sea view. Location was good and within walking distance of the port. Breakfast very good. Staff brilliant
Can’t think of anything that could have been better
Location
Parking, cleanliness, cost, especially the cleanliness of the room very bad
Ligging in erg leuk stadje Oban
De centrale ruimten zijn wat afgeleefd. Trap, hal en gangen
Did not have breakfast Well located, a short walk from station.
Some areas could do with a refresh of paint.
Het hotel was oud, niet meer up to date
This hotel is outdated and in poor condition and the rooms were below standard
My seaview room was a bonus as the weather was somewhat inclement. All staff were exceptionally helpful, especially the Irish girl. I have a rollator, and I could not fault the attention I received for help at buffet breakfast.
The basement entrance where the ramp was accessed was a bit grim, but it was explained to me by the Irish girl (see above) that it was in the process of being refurbished, and that next time I came it would be all good.
The staff were helpful & professional
The rooms were dirty & a foul smell from the toilet. We were moved the next day to a twin room instead of a double room
Excellent location. Nice breakfast
Staff not very friendly. Our room was very grubby: bed and bathroom were clean but rest of room was very grim. Our window was filthy and we overlooked a slate tiled roof. Had to pay £10 to park overnight in the hotels own carpark.
Absolutely horrendous hotel. In poor state of repair both in bedrooms and communal areas.
Everything
The hotel was close to town centre and car parking was available
The rooms were tired. Wallpaper peeling, lumpy pillows and uncomfortable beds. Hotel requires full refurbishment and the pictures online were not typical of the rooms we stayed in. We observed housekeeping sorting supposedly clean towels and sheets on the floor of the corridors which is unhygienic.
The bathroom had water coming through the ceiling but the reception moved me to a bigger twin room straight away. It was much better. The evening meals were fantastic and the view over the bay was great.
I don’t have any other complaints.
One ofthestaff on breakfast was extremely helpful and organised for us to get a taxi. Another breakfast staff member also asked if we had everything we needed and helped get the item. The hotel had a lift
There was no obvious entrance other than the long flight of stairs. No staff offered to help us with our bags up the stairs.
Close to town and on the seafront. Old building but the new renovations are really good. The breakfast and breakfast service was excellent.
The property is definitely needing an upgrade, a bigger lift, and all the floors are needing fixed squeaking too much.
I felt it’s needing a total upgrade upstairs and a new bigger lift. I didn’t like that we were told that we had a 3 course evening meal every night, only to be told that there was a supplement of £25, which we went over by £38 on Monday and then £20 on Tuesday and because off this we never went back for our evening meals on Wednesday and Thursday, when we brought this up with management they said that this was booking .com who were to blame. I don’t care who was to blame here as it cut into our budget and also we need refunded for the two nights we never had our meals. As a result I will not be using booking.com again. So disappointed as been through terms and conditions and there is no sign of the above mentioned. Just so happened my husband took photos of the given menu we were given in restaurant for our evening meals and they definitely do not state that their is a £25 supplement on the meals , there are no £ signs in front of numbers as well. Really disappointed with this. Mrs Gaynor Scott
The barman
It needs money spent on it (alot)....
Great location
Some areas of the hotel are still in need of refurbishment, lift is tiny
Breakfast was fine. The hotel is well located and easy to get to.
the hotel need to be upgraded. The bedroom was dark, no views, the bed was very uncomfortable, didn’t get a proper sleep. The corridors need painting and overall there was nothing that we liked for us to stay there again. There was no shower gel in the shower. The mattress was very uncomfortable.
Good location. Short walk to Oban's attractions. Sea view from the small window in the room was good. The sea view from the lounge area was excellent.
The hotel is very tired and run down. Staffing and amenities are sufficient to keep the doors open but nothing more. We should have paid more attention to the reviews which all reflect our experience of the hotel. Our expectation, based in the vist of the stay were too high.
Location, parking out front, view over the sea
A bit dated, but functional.
The Location on the Esplanade
The room was not ready when I arrived a little time before the check in time. When I returned a little after the check in time it still was not ready so my plans for a very important day had to be altered.
Bar and dinning area. Breakfast was good Beds were clean. Staff in breakfast room polite
Room was terrible. Floorboards all moving. Plumbing in bathroom making very loud gurgling sounds. Handrail in shower totally brown with rust Cable reaching from wall to window dangling.bedlight didn't work Horrible room
We loved the exceptional views. The staff were efficient and friendly. The hotel itself is in a great position overlooking the water.
The building is a little tired and needs some money spent on it. Windows only open partially, but we were to ask for assistance to have them opened. One of the window sills was rotton. It needs a lot of work
Nothing
It was tired and run down
Good location and lovely views. Good breakfast.
Could be doing with a update in decoration. Paper peeling off in corridor.
Staff were pleasant. Location for ferry terminal.
1. The fact that on arrival we were told we had to pay £10 to park in the car park; 2. There was no sign of a ramp to get up to reception so struggled up steep steps which were wet (water not draining away) meant bag got; 3. Lift was dirty and bedroom - edges around radiator and in corners dusty; 4. This hotel is very tired looking - old - very tall ceilings in room and very much in need of refurbishment of decor and fixtures, ie bathroom especially. 5. The floors were VERY SQUEAKY our room and others (we could hear - same floor and floor above).
Great location
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like
We didn’t even say for the second night, it was that bad. We checked in to the Premier Inn which costed is a lot more but, it didn’t smell it didn’t have mould growing up the walls and windows if the room, disgusting place.
Nil
Nothing!!!! I am advising you all to express my disappointment with the booking we had at The Great Western Hotel - Oban which we booked through Booking.com. The photo's on Booking.com website look lovely but once you enter the hotel its a different story and we paid £113.98 for the night which included breakfast. When we arrived at the hotel we were advised that we would have to pay an additional £10 for the parking and that's if there are any spaces on the forecourt. We were asked for our debit card which they scanned and to pay for the parking charge and to cover any damages, again this was ok as we don't go around damaging things but it looks like someone had already damaged everything before we arrived. We were given our room key and we made our to our room, we opened the door we were utterly gobsmacked as this was not the room on the website which we paid for. The walls had damp coming through the paper, the windows were mouldy, the carpet was threadbare, the bathroom was no better the wallpaper was hanging down from the ceiling, there was mould all round the bath, the shower curtain was mouldy, the toilet had a crack in it, the window was not obscure glass and the curtain was being held up with curtain wire that had stretched overtime and was hanging down in the middle. We went back down to reception which isn't the glamourous one on the website by the way and the current one looks rundown, we spoke with Stefano that we are going to check out as the room is not what we expected, he said why what is wrong with the room, we said that it isn't the room we booked on Booking.com. and we are not staying. He took us to another room which he deemed was better but it was just as bad as our first room. we again said no and we were checking out, Stefano said I have another room to show you which is much better but you will have to pay an extra £35.
Continued from above! There were damp patches on the ceiling with mould, the bathroom shower was cracked. The table base was rusty, the window had a crack in it and tape was used to hold it in place, by this time we had had enough so we dropped the bags and went out for something to eat, and we were both checking Booking.com and the hotels website and we kept saying we are at the right hotel aren't we? We must be as they had our booking on their system, so we finished our food and went back to our hotel room. We couldn't stay here it was just to dirty and run down so we went back to reception to check out. The girl behind the desk said but we have offered you a different room what is up with this room, by this time we were so fed up we showed her the room we booked through Booking.com and she had the nerve to say we have those rooms but they are all booked out, she had the audacity to say we only charged you £20 for the upgrade rather than the £35, to add insult to injury she then said if you check out will not give you a refund as its non-refundable. I asked to speak to the manager but he was not available, how convenient and she said Stefano will call you tomorrow morning and two days have passed and no phone call or no response to my four emails that i had sent to the hotel. They strangely send you a text to the following website eu.canarytechnologies.com (Bespoke Hotels), please avoid The Great Western Hotel and look on tripadvisor.com for reviews before you book. There are lots of hotels to choose from in Oban,
Great view
Needs a bit of an upgrade
Location
Very run down and in poor condition Room was dirty and very uncomfortable bed Definitely not worth the exorbitant price charged No one on the desk for check out Needed a receipt and still not got one Asked not to charge my card as I wanted to pay cash but went against my instructions and charged my card Even the front door to the property is in a bad state of repair £100 for a single room One of the worst hotel rooms I’ve ever stayed in
Hotel and food. Location and staff.
Parking was full.
The staff were helpful, polite and smart. The reception staff Maitri and Kevin went beyond their duty to help me resolve a problem. The hotel is an old building, yes it needs updating, which is taking place, but it has character and the most wonderful views. The bar area is spacious which was ideal for accommodating our large family group. The breakfast made for a good start to the day. The coffee, although from a machine, was good. Contact via email more accessible than by phone. The mark of any good hotel starts with the quality of their staff and how they engage with guests.
excellent meal
Super Aussicht auf den Hafen von Oban.
Room very clean and while it could not be described as special it was perfectly adequate for a two night stay. The breakfast was buffet style with a good selection. Very pleasant and courteous staff.
The only negative came from my granddaughter as the bar did not have any Prosecco! 😅
Good location in town
The hotel and room is in need of a refurbishment
In vroegere tijden een mooi hotel. Nu het hoog nodige opgeknapt. Verlopen grandeur!
Great location right in the centre of Oban
Rooms in poor condition with flaky paint, rotten window frames and rooms not cleaned to a high standard. The worst thing is the rooms all over heat and windows openings have been limited so that the rooms cannot be properly ventilated also not all windows open, some have been fixed shut as they have not repaired broke sash runners. It was only 16degC outside but the rooms were still over 23 degC internally.
The location was perfect
Very run down decor, we had an hours wait for our starters to come from the restaurant with no explanation.
The location
Luck of care from the Front Office employees The extremely dirty bedroom The curtain was unhooked and impossible to open or close
Great location, spacious bedroom, good value for money. Steve the barman was extremely friendly and helpful. Reading previous review we were very sceptical but were pleasantly surprised, and would definitely recommend
Large cobweb in corner of room, lighting not great - only one bedside table and lamp but could have easily fitted in two
Location
Rude Reception staff, rooms dated and paper coming of the walls, no parking, no food available on arrival (20:30 hrs) Mould in the bathroom, electrical equipment looked like they had not been inspected and tested! expensive for what you are getting!!
Close to everything. Very clean and comfortable
Nothing
It was very central , rooms spacious and clean
Nothing
The location was ideal.
The property was a little dated and the windows could definitely be replaced and upgraded.
Leaving
Everything it was my 60th birthday weekend and the pictures of the room that I booked through booking.com we're not the room that we were given.it was filthy with cracks everywhere, paint flaking off cracked sink cobwebs marks all over the walls damp marks and just not acceptable booking.com should be checking rooms to make sure they are what they are letting you book it ruined my birthday weekend and I will be looking for a way to get some kind of compensation as it cost me over £200 and the customer toilets were cleaner
Stunning location
Tired decoration inside and outside 3 fire alarms in quick succession early on the Saturday morning, no staff visible outside the premises or to inform guests it was safe to return inside.
One of my rooms hadn’t been cleaned with the bed unmade, towels on the bathroom floor, rubbish spilling out of the bin. Took ages to sort out the room to get it cleaned. Also the pictures that it shows of the bedroom was nothing like what the 2 rooms that was booked. Rooms that we had were tried and needed freshening up
Great location…
Room nothing like the pictures, definitely not worth the £200+ paid. Needs a major overhaul. Dirty carpet, broken floorboards, peeling paint, overpowering bleach smell in the hall and room.
The location
The room, the hotel needs a lot of work and not worth the money I paid 😡😡🤬🤬 wouldn't stay again or recommend to friends or family.
Beautiful Seaview in bedroom and bar, chairs and table in room, easy to find, close to restaurants, train and boats. Good range of food at breakfast, mostly friendly staff.
Although most important places cleaned, everywhere else needed decorating or, at least, washing down to get rid of scuff marks and dirt probably left by workmen. Stairs needed hoovering.
location
£10 a day for parking
There is absolutely nothing to like about this property.
It is dirty, damp and should be closed down until it is totally refurbished.
Newly decorated and refurbished. We were upgraded to a large sea view room.
Plenty on offer at Breakfast
State of the rooms. No fresh towels or rooms made up over the 3 night stay. Workmen working in the room next door hammering and sawing from 7am.
Location
Work men drilling at 7.30 am And also setting the fire alarm off
It was a lovely old fashioned hotel.
Nothing couldn’t fault it
Nothing
Room was dirty and dusty. Bathroom looked like something from the 50s
Location was ideal
The rooms are terrible. We had to ask to change rooms as first room was that bad. Only good thing about second room was the view
staff was pleasant
needs a bit of TLC
The bedding and the bathroom towels were clean. smart and up-to-standard.
The check-in experience was a nightmare. Despite my completing an online check-in 2 days earlier, the clerk demanded to scan my debit card 'out of sight' due to 'company policy'. He insisted he didn't have enough details of who I was, until I showed him the e-booking details on my phone and printout. I do NOT accuse him of the 'skimming' scam, but both Booking.com and my card provider warn very strongly against such practices. I insisted on access to the Duty Manager. That was serially refused. The room had accumulated dust and dirt in several corners, which we photographed. The bathroom had several areas of toxic black mould ( asthma suffers beware! ) and broken/chipped tiling in multiple places. A selection of pics is attached. Worst of all, the electrical connection to the heated towel rail near the bath/shower was fractured, exposing bare electrical leads. A water splash or a knock with a foot or towel would have made the towel rail 'live' - and lethal. I pushed it back in place....
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
Horrible damp mouldy room, disgusting! Do not stay here Staff unhelpful
