Old, traditional, quiet - near Lake Ashi The meals were AMAZING - make sure you take the half-board option.
We arrived and hour before check-in and were allowed to put our bags in the room but we're rushed out before we could get anything out of them. The room was fully made but we were not allowed in it with our bags for more than one minute supervised - very weird. The location was nice and remote but from Odawara there was no bus for as we were instructed there would be, so an extra train and bus got us there - from the bus stop we had to wing it, a short walk in the rain kind of guessing. The photos of the baths are the private baths - not included in the price. The baths included are no where near as nice. The room could have been better maintained - musty and not pristine. Over all the food made up for it and it was a very unique experience but for the money the other aspects could have been better.
Blisko do Hakone, przemiła obsługa i bardzo pomocna. Miejsce pełne historii a nawet jest kont sportowy.
Brak fotela do masażu.
La posizione e i servizi offerti
L’atmosfera retrò
Richiede manutenzione in alcune zone
Camere ampie e potenzialmente belle
location: well positioned for some hiking in not crowded outdoors private onsen: that was a great experience the staff : the owner was super helpful and kind to us traditional dinner, breakfast and rooms
Location and heritage experience with best food in house.
Option to order more.
The onsen is amazing, and the staff is very nice. The dinner is a must have with this.
The air conditioning is very weak. It was very hot in the summer. Also, there is no convenience store downstairs or nearby. So, after 11pm, you cannot get anything to drink. The 10am checkout is also way to early in my opinion.
Lo staff gentilissimo e accogliente.
Great misty vibes, incredible shotukan onsen, beautiful ryokan
everything was excellent
Obsługa była wyjątkowa. Lokalizacja pasowała mi. Onsen na zewnątrz bardzo ładny. Wygodne materace.
I enjoyed the meals. Seemed authentic Japanese experience
Pretty pricey. Meal times were pre set and there’s zero flexibility.
We truly enjoyed our experience here - everything from the beautiful suite to the dinner and breakfast food, to the three different onsens that we got to try. I got to try two different yukatas - one for night and one for the morning! Their shop offers nice post-onsen snacks as well as local craft beers which you can enjoy in the garden. The staff were amazing and the history of this place truly makes your stay magical.
Some other reviews have mentioned this already, but parts of this ryokan do feel dated, seems like major renovations were last done some decades ago. This didn't bother us as the atmosphere and experience was more important for our stay here.
I travelled extensively around Japan before arriving here, and I can honestly say this was an 11/10. Without a doubt, the best stay of my entire trip. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome. Everyone was warm and genuinely hospitable. A special mention to Hatta, who went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. Everything about this ryokan felt authentic. Wearing a yukata around the property, enjoying a traditional Japanese breakfast served by the sweetest elderly ladies (it felt like being looked after by grandmas!), and sleeping in a beautifully traditional room made for such a unique experience. I had one of the best nights’ sleep of my trip. The property itself is simple and modest, yet immaculately clean, beautifully maintained, and full of traditional Japanese charm. It doesn’t rely on luxury—it wins you over with its authenticity, warmth, and attention to detail. Do not miss the dinner. They thoughtfully prepared a 7-8 course vegetarian kaiseki meal for me, and it was hands down the best meal I had in Japan. Every course was beautifully presented and showcased traditional Japanese cuisine. I also experienced both the public onsen and treated myself to the private onsen, both of which were incredibly relaxing. With a bus stop just metres away, it’s very easy to explore the surrounding area. This wasn’t just my favourite hotel in Japan—it was the highlight of my entire trip. I would return in a heartbeat.
Nothing - sadly I could only stay for 3 nights.
Historic onsen
The food was exceptional, and the whole dining experience was really unique. The provided yukata was a lovely way to get into the spirit of the place. The staff were also lovely. The baths were warm and relaxing and I appreciated the information about the mineral composition of the baths, as it was a key point for me that the baths should be natural hot springs. The room was large and comfortable, and I had everything I needed provided.
The garden area surrounding the outside baths were a little unkept, with discarded plant pots and weeds which made it feel less luxurious.
Tutto perfetto.
Nessun difetto da segnalare.
Lovely location, amazing onsen. Staff were extremely kind and accommodating, the greatest service we had during our time in Japan. Do not wait, just book!
Hôtel au charme désuet. Onsen avec eau thermale. Personnel attentif.
The staff is very good and attentive. I was glad to be able to participate in a traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast ceremony, and enjoy the natural hot springs and the Hakone region. Located within 10 minutes drive of the famous Hakone Shrine.
The ryokan is a bit off the main road - if you depend on public transportation it can be inconvenient. The private onsen was a bit of a disappointment: not clean enough to my liking.
Traditional lodging, private onsens, yukata
Aging facilities, no restaurants nearby, dated
Super bon repas
It is a historic Ryokan that even has a museum hall. And the kindest staff that shows you around the grounds. And serves you meals. We had the best experience!
Onsen and food was good
The staff were very gracious
Where to begin : Power sockets sparking Wallpaper peeling down walls Water stains on walls Windows filthy Room smelt very musty , no windows to open Dust everywhere Very dated , bordering on dilapidated
The place is so authentic! I loved the kaiseki dinner, definitely the best food I ate in all Japan. They should have a Michelin star! 🌟 When you come, please do take the option with food. The staff is amazing, very kind and helpful. You can really rest here.
The property is a bit dated, and some areas could use refreshing to improve the overall aesthetics.
It was my favourite stay of the entire trip. The private bath outside was the most relaxing and spiritual experience. The Ryokan keepers also went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and well taken care of. I had a rather unusual request (I wanted to hike down to the lake at 3:30 in the morning and asked for a flashlight). They not only lent me their big one but also showed me extra tips and were excited to see photos I shot afterwards. It just made everything so much more special and welcoming. I couldn’t recommend this Ryokan more!!! Will be coming back if I can!
Tot.
Very authentic place w nice elderly people managing the facility. In the middle of forest but w great access by bus, unique food and traditional bath house. Hikers paradise. Be aware children might not eat the food and there are zero alternatives.
Need a renovation - l feel the mold but the trims are perfectly clean and beds are super comfortable
The place has its own charm — it’s old and somewhat neglected, but also very authentic. Unfortunately, our stay was overshadowed by an incident at checkout, when the ryokan staff insisted that we pay despite the fact that the booking had already been fully paid through Booking.com. Even after we showed proof of payment, the staff maintained that we should pay a second time and seek reimbursement from Booking ourselves. The entire situation was handled in an unpleasant manner. Instead of resolving what was clearly a more complicated checkout issue, we were pushed aside while other guests were served first, which felt quite rude and dismissive. We left feeling stressed and upset, which says a lot considering this trip was meant to be a time for relaxation and rest.
Tiene un encanto especial. Sin duda una gran experiencia.
The multi-course Kaiseki dinner was superb; a family staying longer than one night told us it gets bigger and better! The onsen was very good, clean, with comfortable hot tubs outside and a hot spring pool inside. The staff helped with our luggage delivery to the station, so that we could see and do more.
The toilets on the upper floor (the rooms don't have facilities) were disgusting and didn't work. I never suspected anything like that in Japan, and I don't understand why they were not locked to hide the disgrace. We had to go all the way down to the onsen to use the toilets.
Everything ! The dinner, the clothes, the rooms, the scenery and the staff
Maybe the breakfast not for me. But dinner was WOW
Ristorazione
Struttura un po datata. Onsen privato carino
Beautiful authentic ryokan steeped in heritage. With its own museum and private sulphur onset, it was a magical stay. Rooms were very traditional and was at the top of the mountains only 20 minutes bus ride from Hakone station. The dinner was exquisite with the staff being very attentive.
Would have preferred a higher bed so need to book that next time. Think they offered classic and modern rooms but only found that out when we got there. Would be great to add that to the options when booking. Apart from that, the experience was superb.
All the onsens were amazing, very friendly staff, lots of things to buy to eat in the room if you want to stay in
The H bus stops quite early at night
Traditional japanese ryokan to feel like you are really in Japan. Comfy futons to sleep in. Women get to choose their yukata. Men don't. The inclusive breakfast and dinner option was nice.
Hotel needs some renovation and remodelling. Some broken things and rusty and discolored walls.
Perfect location, amazing staff, beautiful room and OUTSTANDING onsens.
Nothing at all!
The food was excellent! Everything was beautifully prepared and displayed. The onsen was also great and the staff so friendly and helpful. The decor grew in us, as well.
This is a historical space, and much could use updating. That said, after being there, it was more charming than anything.
We booked private onsen. It is very nice. Water is very hot so be aware. 30-45 mins is more than enough to enjoy it. Dinner was incredible. Had a lot of traditional japanese food I wasn't able to find elsewhere. It was delicious.
One of the lights in our room wasn't working properly - it lights up in the middle of the night on its own. We had hotel staff came by to remove the bulb. They also compensated us for the inconvenience.
Serene location in remote area near Lake Ashi. Superb meals! Ancient ryokan that has seen better days. The staff were seemingly as old as the inn but impressively efficient and accommodating.
As to be expected with an ancient inn, maintenance would be costly prohibitive. The traveler needs to adjust their expectations to this setting. I could not fully enjoy the baths while looking at unmaintained surroundings.
Charming hotel with private onsen for rent. Staff were delightful.
Dated facilities, cleaning could be better.

What guests love
Areas to consider
Cleanliness
6.5/10Several reviews report musty smells and mold in parts of the indoor onsen and general wear; cleanliness concerns lowered this score despite praise for onsen water quality in other places.
Service
10/10Service is repeatedly praised across languages: staff described as very kind, attentive (even delivering missed breakfast to the room), and welcoming—a clear strength of the property.
Location
9/10Location is favored (higher elevation, cool, fitting guests' needs) and the ryokan setting is appreciated; it is somewhat remote, which limits nearby shops but enhances atmosphere.
Room Quality
7/10Rooms are traditional and charming for many guests but feel dated to others; some guests noted weak or absent air conditioning and older fans, while mattresses were sometimes called comfortable.
Amenities
10/10Onsen amenities are outstanding (multiple onsens, beautiful outdoor onsen, yukata experience, garden/snack shop); however, the hotel shop has limited emergency options and there is no nearby convenience store.
Value for Money
7.5/10Many guests enjoyed the experience but found the hotel relatively pricey; fixed meal times, checkout time complaints, and occasional issues with included meals affected perceived value.
Food and Beverage
9/10Meals are frequently described as excellent and authentic (dinner a highlight); some logistical limitations noted (preset meal times, need to reserve dinner, limited shop options for late-night items).
Overall Experience
9/10Overall stays are described as magical and highly recommended due to the onsen, food, history and attentive staff; dated areas and some cleanliness/amenity limitations temper an otherwise very positive experience.
