The location.
Breakfast was just average.
A perfect location with easy access to the Historic dockyard and Gunwharf Quays and a great choice of restaurants, A visit to the Spinnaker Tower is a must. However cleans the rooms needs to be commended, top quality.
We arrived early otherwise we might not have had a parking space, its very limited. The bed was uncomfortable and after three days we ached. Breakfast was chaotic, either lack of staff or just disorganized. The bar closes early, in a Hotel?
Good selection of hot food cereals fresh fruit etc
Location and Naval feel
Hot lunches weren’t available when I stayed. Except soup! Minor issue
Lots of character and good breakfast.
The room was warm even with the windows open.
Excellent hotel very friendly staff, very clean. Exceptional breakfast and evening bar meals. Hotel within walking distance of the dockyard and shopping centre.
The only downside is very limited parking if going by car, however the hotel is close less than ten minutes walk from the railway station.
Very convenient for visiting the museums
Some of the decorations in the areas downstairs were a bit tired and one lift was out of order.
Very good location near all facilities
Room 220 was very clean but the bathroom smelt of sewers
Location good. Did not have breakfast or dinner.
Allocation of room was very poor. Ceiling flaky, wallpaper peeling, damp stains on ceiling, room was very tired and not acceptable for renting out. We went to Reception to change rooms and explained why. They allocated a room in the main building. When we got to the room it was a twin room not a double room which was really disappointing, especially as it was our anniversary. We decided not to go back to Reception and just stuck with the twin room but not great.
Central, easy to get to. Quick check in
Lack of parking despite saying online there was onsite parking not knowing we needed to book ahead of time
Reception staff sorted out a replacement room as original was unsatisfactory needing urgent redecoration. Upgraded room was clean and a comfortable bed. Very handy for everything in Portsmouth.
Having to complain about my room and asking for a change. Breakfast was very poor and had to repeatedly ask for food items to be replaced on the continental breakfast.
Staff were really friendly and helpful :-) We arrived early, but the room was ready so we could check in and we were lucky enough to get one of the free (hotel permit) car parking spaces at the front of the Hotel (the hotel can also sell an on street permit for £6). The bed was comfortable, breakfast choices were good and the location was very close to the entrance to The Historic Dockyard. Liked the vibe of the former Naval Club.
We were in one of the older refurbished rooms, which has been done well, but there were a few small points. We found the shower difficult to operate initially, but one of the very friendly reception staff helped us out and it was fine after that. The sink was very slow to drain, the toilet pedestal was rocky and the chair in the bedroom felt like it could collapse.
Very comfortable, not sterile. Facilities were perfect for a short stay. Food excellent. Staff very friendly.
Nothing to dislike.
Clean and tidy. Decor was very nice.
The heat in our room was on all day and night. No where to turn it down or off.
Everything
Noisy doors
I liked the room also a little worn in places. Great location. 3 minutes walk to the harbour. 6 minutes walk to Portsmouth Harbour. Staff polite and professional. Heated pool was great. Smaller than expected though. The room was clean. Would have preferred bed and breakfast as part of the fee, but did not want to pay more than 350.00.
Dusty in places. Touched the TV to move it forward thick layer of dust. I cleaned it off. Rust was coming through the radiator. Needed repainting. A few stains on the wall. Musty smell in the lobby area.
Accommodating
Laundry Service
Easy walk to Historic Naval Dockyards. Food was delicious and plentiful. Staff were friendly without being overbearing. Would definitely recommend.
Great location
Limited parking space but a good positive was discounted parking in The car park opposite
Location excellent, our room looked recently redecorated and had comfy new thick carpet
Location and theme
Council estate behind
Location is great for the dockyard and the dockyard carpark is opposite the hotel. Generally felt clean. Breakfast was good. Didn't use the snooker or skittles but visiting these areas it was a nice option to have. There was also a library and the lobby is a work of art. Staff were very friendly, helpful and approachable.
Decor in one of the rooms was particularly poor with peeling paint and wallpaper. Windows were difficult to secure shut as they were very stiff. Recreation areas need maintenance with missing ceiling panels. It was a bit of a maze to navigate and find rooms but was well signposted and staff were around to help.
Kind and helpful staff. Good for storing cycles. Great for ferry
I liked the story behind the hotel.
No air conditioning. We arrived early and they made no effort to accommodate us.
Did not stay for breakfast
Access. Lift did not go direct to floor. Leaving next morning had great problem finding my way down. Could not find lift and had to use several staircases.
This was my 2nd stay at this particular hotel - I will be planning to return again soon. As before, staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean and spacious. Breakfast - the best, as ever, lol There was a good atmosphere, and the location suited me very much. 5 minute walk to RN Historical Dockyard.
N/a
Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful. And my request for a blue badge parking space was dealt with promptly.
The only criticism was that the big lift was broken down and the small lift was a bit too small for my mobility scooter. However i coped.relaxing and near by
Great location and interesting decor
It Had running water ( yes I’m being sarcastic)
No fans, rooms over the kitchen vent appalling. The few amenities were literally bolted into drawers, or walls (blow dryers, body soaps) one small table fan with a plug of 3 feet. Temps in the 90s. The neighborhood is sketchy, one doesn’t feel safe during the day or night.
Friendly hotel and very nostalgic for me being ex RN
No air con
Not far from coach pick up point
Very lumpy pillows, bed was hard like a board, terrible night's sleep. Hotel characterless. Being refurbished. Outside area location wise is not the best of areas.
The hotel was ideally situated for the Historic Dockyard it was very clean and quiet.
The water pressure could have been better and the pillows weren't the best.
Location was great. Bed comfy. Staff all very attentive and nice. Good choices for breakfast. Nice bar to relax in and have a bite to eat also.
One of the lifts was not working so only one lift available which could only have two people at a time in it. Yes there are stairs but as in my husband’s situation they are not a comfortable option. Hope the lift is working again soon for other hotel guests.
It was clean and welcoming
Breakfast to expensive
Very helpful staff they went out of their way provide assistance. This is not the flashest hotel I have ever stayed in but it is definitely was not the worst. It is an cool old school British hotel with old school class and character I certainly enjoyed my time there. Very handy to local pubs and attractions. The swimming pool was a bonus as was the restaurant.
The washing machine was defective.
Good location with parking. Helpful staff.
The room had twin beds rather than a double. The decor was tired and facilities were basic.
The only thing that is remotely any good is the location of this hotel
The hotel is run down dirty and disgusting the facilities are old the staff don’t care it’s boiling hot. Thankfully we stayed as a family for 1 night we have stayed in some pretty bad places over the years but this was beyond vile!!!! The leisure facilities were extremely hot the pool is tiny the pool side shower wouldn’t turn off with scolding water all over the floor extremely dangerous if a baby or child had walked around the postage stamp pool they would have been burnt. Our room we were given was a fully equipped disabled room great if disabled not so pleasant when you don’t need those facilities. We were in the basement which meant it was absolutely boiling no aircon and the window opened out onto a back street which was not safe to leave the windows open during the night. During the night the sink in the bathroom was gurgling and filling with water. This was not the worst!!!! When we woke at 6.30 after not sleeping all night with the sink and how hot the room was we discovered we had a RAT staring at us from the toilet!!!! We immediately left the room to reception to speak to the manager who was rude and very disrespectful. He did give us our money back but left us without a room to get ready ready!!!! Thankfully our next hotel were amazing and left us check in early for free and gave us complimentary breakfast. Do not stay here avoid!!!!!!
Excellent breakfast & staff, room was suitable for my needs, however the deco let the room down however renovations to the area of the hotel were underway.
room deco old & overdue a refurb
Die Lage ist Topp. Die Mitarbeiter/innen waren sehr hilfsbereit.
Die Türen schließen sehr laut, es ist hellhörig und ich hatte nachtaktive Nachbarn.
Very close to Navy Dockyard.
Bar without flair, staff at reception slow during check-in while talking to maybe- customers on the phone. Breakfast was the worst during our South-England Trip. Never had something worse. Really. Industrial scrambled eggs and so on… No fridge in the room.
The staff were very welcoming and friendly.
The hotel was a little tired and felt run down. However, I think there was a programme of refurbishment in place and perhaps my room hadn't yet made it up the list.
Great location and friendly staff.
The bedrooms are quite dated.
The location is brilliant, close to everything.
The rooms are quite dated but clean.
Location
Building works underway, lack of air con in the rooms with the room sitting at around 32* in the evening
Excellent service and accommodation
Nothing
The library of naval books.
No air con in my bedroom
Good location with plenty of free and subsidized parking nearby. Nice bar area. Great ambiance with a nautical theme. Lovely welcoming staff. Good breakfast with plenty of choice.
Poor choice of curtains meant that the room was extremely light in the morning. Very hot in the room though a fan was provided in the room. Hotel was being redecorated but we were not made aware of this at the time of booking.
Was brilliant, lovely staff lovely breakfast and close to the station and Festival
The room was a bit too hot for us so we didn't really sleep well
The hotel was lovely, staff very friendly, was actually quite quiet! We had a lovely family room and our boys loved the bunk beds! Swimming pool was empty and the breakfast was great with more than enough choice. Great onsite free parking. And we loved there was a lounge/library there too! Easy walkable distance from historic dockyard and gunwharf quays too!
Just a little outdated in the bedrooms, was quite warm even with fans.
Location suited us for Naval Museums
The breakfast was awful. Sausage was very cheap, like eating cardboard, no taste. Kept running out of food, eggs, tomatoes, yogurt. Continental was just bread/toast and jam, croissant and fruit. No cheese or cold meats. Asked about cheese, told hotel didnt have any. Asked for refund as didnt want breakfast 2nd day. Told no hotels problem, had to go to Booking.com which are absolutely useless!! Can only refund if book direct bug id tried that and receptionist wouldnt let me. Said cheaper on booking.com . Very strange! Will book hotels direct in future!!!!
Didn't have breakfast
Nothing
Impressive old hotel. Possibly a little warm, so wouldn't like to be here in the heat of summer. The walls are really thick so you can tell it must be an old building but it's been fitted out nicely in modern furnishings with touches of blue. There's a grand library with lots of book, which would be nice on an autumn day, but traps the heat.
No air conditioning, window barely opened, food fair, location just ok. Would not recommend.
No air conditioning and a window that barely opened for any fresh air.
The history. The staff. The location.
It needs modernising and a new sausage supplier at breakfast
Close to quay
Bed too small
What an amazing building! So clean and spacious, loved everything about it. The best location too! We arrived mid afternoon which was the ideal time of the day to get a hotel free parking spot mid August. We had a family room for 5 with bunk bed. The room was great for us, lots of room, clean and modern. The staff were incredibly helpful the moment we arrived. A very well run hotel!
There’s nothing to say here.
Liked its location close to shopping outlet , historical area and lots of history within the hotel . 30 mins walking distance to south sea where we was attending victorious festival
Unfortunately we did not get any sleep on our first nite as issues with the alarm on our floor right outside our room went off twice lasting 10 mins each time from 1-2 am unfortunately did not get back to sleep after this .
We loved every moment of our stay. The hotel was peaceful and quiet, yet conveniently located close to the quay. My daughter loved the warm swimming pool, while my husband enjoyed the pool tables. We all had a fantastic time and would love to come back! And a big thank you to the staff. The hotel upgraded us to a family room free of charge as a courtesy because we were staying with our child.
Breakfast was good I am coeliac an was cated for
Parking available across the hotel. Excellent spot to visit the dock museums and wharf area. Room was big enough though some parts felt a bit dated. 3 windows available so cooling was fine.
shower was in the corner with a narrow entrance. Bit annoying to get in and out and quite small. Room windows were to a busy street so a bit noisy in the morning. Only 1 small elevator working for all the guests.
Location Friendly staff It’s history
The basic rooms were VERY tired. Ripped wallpaper cracked bath panels no spare sockets at all
We managed to get the last parking space outside the hotel but had we not, that would have been difficult carrying luggage and finding somewhere else to park and with a reasonable cost. I believe we were just lucky. Instructions about parking weren't clear in advance and this information would have been helpful as it was one of my key criteria - alternative options nearby, where you could try and park, etc The staff were pleasant and readily available/responsive. The room was relatively quiet too. Bed comfort level satisfactory. Fan in the room was welcome. The availability of lifts useful for lugging bags up and down to the room.
The hotel is very old fashioned and needs updating. It is glum - the lighting poor generally so makes the place feel more dismal and the atmosphere a little miserable. The room was quite small and hot. The bathroom was poor repair which in turn made the cleanliness feel less satisfactory- the door didn't lock. The shower power/temperature was hit and miss.
All except the lack of air conditioning. Staff were friendly, polite and eager to help. Breakfast was excellent and trays and drinks were regularly refilled by watchful staff.
No air conditioning
We loved every moment of our stay. The hotel was peaceful and quiet, yet conveniently located close to the quay. My daughter loved the warm swimming pool, while my husband enjoyed the pool tables. We all had a fantastic time and would love to come back! And a big thank you to the staff. The hotel upgraded us to a double room free of charge as a courtesy because we were staying with our child.
Staff pleasant and helpful. Well stocked library for naval history.
Breakfast was really good, plenty of choice. Dinning room very clean and bright.
Size of bed, my husband is 6ft 3in and feet hanging off bed.
Facilities were brilliant, kids loved the pool, darts and skittles. Room was big, plenty of space. The hotel has spaces for visitors so free parking. Unique building with the naval history
Not a problem for us but there is refurbishment going on. No air con in room, there was a fan provided.
Location was good, foyer pretty, rooms clean
Beds too soft, pool ridiculously small and not nice or clean changing area. Reception really wasn’t service with a smile.
Good location.
The room was unbearably hot. There was a crack in the washbasin and the toilet wasn't very secure.
An absolutely beautiful hotel with lovely amenities- the access room was fantastic and the beds were amazing. Food was fabulous.
Ongoing building work- but this has to be done from tiny to time
Convenient
The room allocated was very poor. Dirty, stains on the floor and bedding. Looked nothing like the photos used on the booking.com web site Complained and eventually given a room change.
Bon équipement
Parking Difficile de se garer dans le quartier
The location and friendly staff.
The parking advertisement states on-site but there are only a few spaces and all we're full. We had to park in the public car park opposite. You need to reserve a space before arrival.
Really lovely hotel, friendly staff and the recently redecorated room was lovely
We liked it all
An overnight stop to catch ferry the next morning. The location was excellent. Also within walking distance to Gunwharf Quay, for the shops and bars etc. The hotel was a lovely building, but had no atmosphere which was a shame. We had a std double room which was clean and tidy. Bathroom was average size , but had lovely big windowsill to put all our toiletries on. I would like to pass on my thanks to the person who reserved a parking space for us. My husband has mobility issues and has a blue badge. It was an immense help to be able to park outside the hotel.
Had a meal in the bar which was very disappointing. It came with 2 fried eggs, slapped one on top of the other. The yolks of both eggs were broken and had run down onto the plate under the other food. This may sound like a trivial complaint, but to present a meal like this was poor and more befitting a greasy Joe's cafe. I did mention it to the waitress but she made a hasty exit.
Good location
Car parking
Good choice of breakfast.
Telephone not operational in bedroom Shower couldn't be turned off Took almost an hour to contact a member of staff due to Telephone issue. I had to use my mobile to phone hotel reception! I don't like lifts and the stairway was being decorated The floor covering used to protect the carpet could have been removed whilst decorators not there
Great value breakfast and location
All good
Location
The room. Shockingly hot room, which was old, 1980's looking extension, way, way round the back. Don't be fooled by the nice reception area. Mind you the 1980's wing was being decorated.... at 0700 in the morning as the builders woke us up banging. The toilet was hanging off the wall, as every time sat on it, it moved & banged. Breakfast is half the price around the corner in local pubs.
Very small lift, and other lift out of order
Central location with free parking so could walk everywhere. Food in restaurant was fantastic
Room was very outdated
Just a lovely place to stay, Location is perfect for everything !!! just out of the main hustle and bustle of the centre but a 10 minute walk and then anything you want.
Nothing. Next time staying longer
A lovely hotel. Friendly staff and when assistance was needed were very obliging. The room was lovely and presented well. It's a great location and the hotel has great facilities. A local supermarket is near by and local buses are also nearby. I would stay again
Close proximity to everything
Dark in Horatio dining room.
Great location, lovely staff, room was very clean and the added bonus of a parking space.
Location outstanding, breakfast outstanding.
Finish the hotel upgrade quicker.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, location brilliant for historic dockyard.
Breakfast cold Buffett a bit limited but otherwise all good for us.
Memories of when it was the Home Club in the 70s
Poor early morning breakfast before ferry crossing to france
The breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice The bar area very clean and tidy. Bedrooms were really clean tea and coffee replenished every day. Snooker table good.
The pool area could do with updating, the spa wasnt working. One of the lifts wasnt working. The bedrooms were very warm but there was fans.
Location
Not prepared for hot weather The ventilation was sub standard the fan in the room was too small for the room so it was inadequate
The building and the location
No AC and it was to hot, terrible for sleep. Breakfast wasn’t good neither
Most staff OK except one member
Bed
Location and helpful staff.
Hot. No air conditioning and only one portable fan available.
Proximité du dock de la gare des bus pour siuthsea , international ferries, wight ferry, restaurants…
Nous avons eu un Peu chaud mi août mais cela doit être exceptionnel Repas du restaurant un peu cher qualifié /prix
i liked that the hotel was in a good location walking distance to everything
The hotel was conveniently situated for my son’s graduation and close to the sea. The room was nice, the staff are lovely and the food was nice.
The weather was very hot and there was no air conditioning. The swimming pool opening times were limited so we were unable to use the pool
