Rooms were comfortable but could hear the people next door
Wonderful staff (thank you for your hospitality and warmth, Siobhan) 🥰👍
The interior was impressive
Staff friendly
No fridge in the room
Nice location but not easily accessible on public transport. You need a car/ taxi.
Room very small. Could hear guests walking around in room above. Floor uneven with creaking and loose floorboards.
Location, Restuarant food, very comfortable bed and staff are very friendly and approachable.
The Restuarant tables are badly needing varnished, polished or painted as they feel sticky to the touch and look pretty well worn. Food is excellent and the room is bright but the tables let it down.
Quiet position.
Property needed some TLC. Carpets throughout the hotel were dirty. Carpet in our room was very stained and dirty. We had booked breakfast with the room but on reflection felt like we could not eat at the property.
Didn’t have the breakfast.
The shower rubber water protector at the bottom of the shower was torn and black with dirt , so water got everywhere when you used it. It needs replacing.
Great location, pleasant staff
Food not great. Medium steak was well done or beyond. Hard pillows Cozy room meant duck down to get to the window😂. Window wouldn't stay open
Great location, lovely staff.
Room on the second floor was smaller than expected & felt cramped.
Location, grounds and food were excellent
Room was small and too dark. Some plastering needs repaired around the window
From outside the property looks lovely and clean spacious carpark and good location
Shower is very small and although myself and husband are if normal size we couldn’t move in it we were invested by wasps through the night brought it to receptionist attention next morning Front desk were not smart grey trainers with shirt undone didn’t look very nice for the property Food was lovely evening meal
Lovely building. Room clean and comfortable, if compact. Dinner options very decent, reasonably priced. Staff generally pleasant and helpful (see below). Location quiet: it’s well outside Durham city. That didn’t matter to us. Overall a very pleasant stay overnight to break a longer journey.
The shower in our room - which looked to be very recently refurbished) was very compact and bijou. We’re not large people (understatement) but even we found it awkward to manoeuvre. And beware: this seems to be a common wedding venue - there was such a do when we stayed. What concerned us was the breakfast the following morning. This - unlike the menu promised in the room information - was buffet style indistinguishable from a Premier Inn (other than for poorer coffee) to cater for the large party. We paid before we realised this: fortunately the server negotiated with the chef to provide the a-la-carte breakfast items we believed we had paid for. It’s a bit sharp to offer a rather ordinary buffet breakfast for 45% more than a Premier Inn simply for convenience. Make sure you know what you are paying for!
Lovely hotel ,rooms clean and comfortable, good breakfast ,staff were very accommodating , I attended a wedding there and stayed 1 night … and it proved to be a good venue for a celebration.
Common areas a little dated in places , no lift , exterior could do with a fresh coat of paint I stayed in a standard room witch I though was Quite expensive
Wonderful staff (especially Charlotte) - went out of the way to make sure my visit was a success. Great food - dinner and breakfast very tasty and well presented. Room was great too!
The hotel needs in general needs a little TLC.
Staff were very friendly but hotel needs updating and decorating
No handrails on some of thestairsleadind from room to toother rooms and were very steep in places Getting out to the garden from the bar areas was a plank of wood to get out on very dangerous
lovely greeting and helpful staff
To be honest, we did like the hotel and ambience
Shower is a bit complexed:) for us should be more easy
Had to miss breakfast this time. Would have liked to have had it. Never had room only before. Bar are inviting ,relaxing. Bar somewhat unattended but guess due to staffing and cost.
Nothing to make an issue with.
Good location friendly staff. Good breakfast. Nice garden area but needed a bit of tlc. Plenty of parking.
Tired looking exterior and fixtures and fittings needed a repair internally. Bedroom carpet had more stains than pattern. But lovely new bathroom. Coffee was awful and maybe some local bakery bread. Some local footpath info would have been nice.
Lovely welcoming public areas and grounds as well as comfy room.
How friendly the staff were. Also the breakfast was top notch
There wasn’t anything
Room was comfortable, staff were helpful and the breakfast was very good

Room was big and comfortable, staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good as was the evening meal.

A beautiful old building set in lovely grounds. The room was a cosy double so not massive as expected but still had all the amenities required. £4 a pint at the bar 5-8 was a great bonus.
Room was very warm with no way to control as the windows only lifted a few inches.
The peaceand quiet
The shower was too small to use properly.
I would have liked slightly healthier breakfast options such as rolled oats and Greek-style yoghurt
Would have liked there to be a lift up,to avoid a narrow stairway to our second floor room. We are 80 and 79 years old.
Staff were lovely, bathroom, lovely crisp sheets, ample car parking.
Carpet in bed room stained and window seat upholstery. Bedroom was dusty on dressings table frame and hanging frame, chair could do with a vacuum. If you could see beyond these niggles this could be a nice hotel
Fabulous location just outside the city, wonderful breakfast and a very peaceful weekend
Staff were very friendly and helpful and the bed was so comfortable
Lovely old building with lots of potential.
Needs decoration, sticky breakfast tables were a bit of a put off.
Friendly and comfortable hotel. Beautiful gardens and grounds
The staff were so helpful and friendly. Beautiful decor and we loved sitting out in the garden sipping wine. A very relaxing place in beautiful surroundings.
Lovely staff beautiful Room and great food
Lovely hotel which is peaceful and cozy
Nothing
location
un clean no toiletries or fridge was a hot room in summer months
all good
The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful
We had a room on the second floor which was too hot for us to sleep comfortably. We were given a small fan and kept the small window open for 2 days until the room finally cooled down
Friendly staff and locals in the Tavern and hotel. Great price, great food and really nice location

Lovely place and staff so welcome. Definitely stay again next time I’m in the area.
All nice to be honest.
Very nice and peaceful hotel with lovely rooms and food.
All good
The friendly staff and surrounds
Carrying cases up stairs
Lovely
Quiet location, ample parking, very friendly and helpful staff, great value for money

Very clean rooms and lovely, professional personnel.
Lots of character great location for where we needed to be. Staff very friendly. Food was tasty.
The place looks amazing and I could imagine it being fabulous it just needs a bit more love and attention. The bedroom was quite small and the bathroom was tiny (it was tricky to get in comfortably with the position of the door and I’m glad I’d lost some weight recently!) we were upstairs in the dorma bedroom-it was very warm, there was no obvious air conditioning. I opened the window which could have done with a little bit of attention and a wipe. The mattress was a bit lumpy too.
It’s a lovely building in a beautiful setting. Our room was spacious and clean with a good view. Food was amazing!
We were called and warned there was a prom on the night we stayed. However that was no issue at all - you couldn’t hear them. But there was a wedding the next day and the wedding party and guests made a lot of noise from 6am! They acted as if they were the only guests staying. The hotel was lovely but they should remind guests that unless they book the whole venue to respect that not everyone is happy to be woken so early.
Stunning setting, building looked beautiful from the outside.
Inside was old and tired. There was an event being held on the night we stayed which meant dinner service was incredibly slow and our first course took an hour to arrive. When it did the food was incredibly basic and the steak over-cooked. Our room was in the eaves and was incredibly hot but the hotel was full so we couldnt move, although they loaned us a desk fan. The water glasses had lipstick marks on them which was gross. There was no Lift which meant we had to drag our suitcase up several Flights of steps. Breakfast was inedible. I asked for scrambled eggs and bacon but it was just tasteless and greasy. I asked for soya milk which instantly curdled in my drink and overall it was very disappointing
Very relaxing stay and friendly staff
All good
Nice clean and tidy friendly staff and ideally located.
Location is perfect, just 20 minutes out of the city centre. Staff are very friendly, and helpful. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Breakfast delicious!
Nothing.
No air con. Lack of available staff. Staff very abrupt. The place is tired.
The setting despite looking rather uncared for. The bed was comfortable and the shower was powerful. The staff were efficient and pleasant.
The bathroom was small and the shower cubicle was likewise small. We fitted in it ok but moving around was not really feasible and if we were larger framed people it would have been very challenging to use the shower and the toilet. The food was not good and took a long time to be served. Dinner took so long that our very pleasant waiter took a drink off the bill without being prompted. When I asked for a wine list I was told that it was in the process of being re-written so there wasn’t one. I write wine lists for a living so I know that it doesn’t take long to prepare one on a computer and then you run down the wines being de-listed and then write the new list. It’s very hard to sell anything other than basic wines if you don’t give your staff the sales tool (wine list) to do that. As a consequence I had a couple of glasses of the pouring wines which were pretty ordinary. The coffee at breakfast tasted like instant coffee and was undrinkable.
Nice outside areas
Reception staff a little sever Rooms a little dark and grubby Fan supplied was dirty Maybe 4 tv channels in first room before I pushed for a much resisted move from reception staff
Very friendly and exceptional helpful
No lift but that was keeping with the age and type of building and was stated on the wed site
The staff were polite, couldn't fault the service.
'Deluxe' rating of room really not deserved. Bathroom was lovely except for random yellow stain in shower tray and the only place with enough lighting to apply make up. Bedroom carpet was heavily stained, damp peeling walls badly painted over, rotten window frames, stained duvet, dusty lamp shades. Breakfast menu in bedroom which we couldn't order from, had to be the already standing for past our buffet style. Just not what I would expect for the price paid.
Lovely building
Good location to visit Durham. Very friendly staff but were busy the night we stayed, with pre wedding party having dinner too. Food & service were excellent. Dinning room, bar, garden space, parking and lounge ect were good too.
The room allocated to us was very small. Unsure whether they have bigger rooms too. The shower, taps and water flow are good too. The shower cubicle was so narrow, we managed but anyone above medium size adult or with hip/knee issues might struggle using this shower.
Hotel grounds very nice. Comfortable bed . Slept well.
Reception welcome not very warm. Only half the shower was working. No hot breakfast which was paid for. The breakfast staff lady was very apologetic. Did her best. still offered buffet continental. to us.
The hotel itself is lovely.
It was very understaffed when we were there. The kitchen lost the supply of gas and therefore cooked breakfast was not available.
Gardens
Staff attitude, standard of food, lack of health and safety awareness, cigarette smoke from guests smoking in other bedrooms rooms and travelling through bathroom extraction, poor lighting in bedroom.
Location very picturesque and peaceful. Just what we needed. Only a 10 minute taxi trip to Durham city centre. Food was amazing, great choices on both breakfast and dinner menus.
Disabled facilities non existent, partial ramp access and a lift would have been appreciated.
The hotel and staff are very good. Food was tasty.
I thought the food was overpriced, although tasty. The breakfast was over cooked, bacon, black pudding, and sausage were overcooked.
Location and staff
Decor in bedroom rather tired, stains on the floor and blind didn’t fully close so the room got light from 4am and we struggled to sleep. My mattress also had a big dip in the middle of it which made it uncomfortable to sleep on
Superb breakfast menu, had something different each day and all choices were freshly prepared and delicious
Wifi
Comfortable room in a quiet hotel.
Room clean bed very comfortable breakfast was great dinner was lovely
The staff and the setting was great.
Thought the property was looking a little tired.
Lovely hotel full of character The bedrooms were comfortable Lean & very stylish. The bathroom was had an excellent shower. Great location.
NA
The property and the location is excellent value for money, the room was nicely decorated and had everything we needed. The surroundings of the hotel was so peaceful and absolutely beautiful to be surrounded by nature
Nothing
Nice location, friendly staff, clean room
No aircon/fans & sash windows have restricted opening in very hot weather. Exterior of building looking a bit shabby, could do with redecorating/painting esp window frames. Poor breakfast - it’s not hard to offer a decent fruit salad option. Bread/toast was a cheap slice of hovis, some sourdough would elevate it. The avocado on offer was guacamole clearly ready made out of a pot. I’m being hyper critical but a decent breakfast can redeem the other weaknesses.
Room was spot on and Evening Food was really good - partner still talking about it
No Complaints
Very convenient for the Park and Ride into Durham. Comfortable room, attractive surroundings, friendly staff, good food and great value!
Lovely welcome from staff, good food and clean rooms. Peaceful venue

Friendly staff and good powerful shower
Lovely room
Pillow quality
The staff were really unfriendly and unhelpful
Arrived to a lovely little private car park and received a very warm welcome from the reception staff, who already had my room prepared. I was absolutely thrilled with the room — modern, spacious, and immaculately clean. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room had everything I needed for a perfect stay. The gardens were stunning, the food in the restaurant was delicious, and it was only a 7-minute drive into the centre of Durham. I’ll definitely be back!
The grounds and location of the hotel were great. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. The food was lovely (both evening meal and breakfast) and arrived piping hot. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. There was a choice of social spaces including a cozy lounge or bright bar/restaurant area as well as lots of outside space. We were worried the bar attached to the hotel might be noisy but we were not disturbed at all by noise in the bedroom. I thought the price point made this stay exceptional value for money and we will be returning.
There was not much to dislike. The standard double rooms are small as are the bathrooms which is worth noting if you're booking a hotel for the room alone. But the social spaces downstairs balance this out. The building is old so there was the occasional creak as other guests made their way to bed but this is normal for any hotel. There are parts of the building and furniture which could do with some redecorating but again, for the price point, this was not an issue for us.
Beautiful quiet location with great views and a lovely styling. Very clean and peaceful. Great staff and very accommodating with breakfast.
Large comfortable room with modern bathroom. Staff very pleasant . Very pleasant stable bar & Sunday lunch was very tasty & seemed homemade. Lovely views.
Entry door , area was needing upgrading, chipped paintwork, old doors. Bedroom had bad smell of stale vomit/ smoking. Some rough clientele, swearing loudly.
Grand old building
Bed was uncomfortable, small shower and use of bathroom facilities was a squeeze
Bed was comfortable. Hotel looks pretty.
Middle of nowhere. Food stops serving at 4pm on Sundays. Rooms are very small. Drinks are expensive.
We visited this as our great uncle was born here when it was a Manor House. We had been invited by email to book for dinner & It all looked good online
No idea where reception is from the car par park … no help with suitcases for 3 guests all in their late 70’s. Our 2 rooms were tiny and our ‘cosy’ double was minute . The kettle had to sit on the floor and I had to sleep the other way to compensate for the sloping mattress/floor! We had booked in to dinner days before, but were told …at the table …that 3 mains were unavailable as the menu was changing and then later informed …when looking at puddings…. that there were no desserts for the same reason. We felt so sorry for the young waiter having to deliver this ridiculous news!
Extremely friendly staff. Lovely gardens to sit and enjoy a drink. I had dinner, it was excellent. The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.
The bathroom, particularly shower cubicle was small, but for the price I’m not complaining
The staff were very welcoming from start to finish. Beautiful views and peaceful. Food was very tasty.😊
My own thing I didn't find comfortable were the pillows. Mine are a little softer. But everyone has their own taste for things like this. It will not stop me from revisiting.🥰
Location, staff
The food was poor
We came to stay at 61 Durham for my son's university open day and whilst it was a short journey out side of the city centre, it felt like you were away from the crowds and surrounded by countryside. In addition, there was a good selection of hot foods on the breakfast menu.
Room was slightly on the small side but absolutely fine for one night. Worth also noting that the hotel kitchen closes at 8.30pm for dinner.
Lovely room; really comfortable bed, excellent shower; view over back garden. Excellent evening meal and breakfast with wide choice of hot and cold items.
Nothing. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you.
An excellent hotel with friendly staff, great food and very comfortable beds. Wonderful view from the bedroom too.
The cosy double was great value for money and fine for one person, at the same time acknowledging that the bathroom was a little tight for space!
Nil
Felt tired and shabby, not helped by a lack of cleaning. Food poorly cooked. The staff were friendly.
Good breakfast Location
Bathroom was very small
Old property but clean and characterful.
A few damp patches but a 150 year old building so going to have
