Location.
Old in desperate need of cleaning, refurbishment and upgrade. Cobwebs, spiders, dead bugs in light fixtures. Dirty tea cups and utensils in room. Black mould in room onsen. Stale, musty smell throughout. And for £422 for one night's stay a complete and utter ripoff.
The property was straight out of a magical movie. The garden was amazing and the building was very beautiful and traditional. For a 120 year old building it was very clean and well kept. It has an old smell and since it’s right by the woods you will find some bugs which is expected and gave it the extra character. The staff went above and beyond to make this the best stay and it truly was. Food was absolutely amazing and very traditional. My kids tried everything and liked the majority of it. The 3 different onsens were amazing and much needed after a lots of walking. The hotel is conveniently located near Gora station, which made exploring the area very easy. Everyone in my family agreed that this was the best stay/ experience during our Japan trip. The staff was so helpful and welcoming. Amazing memories were made here!
My stay was excellent and exactly matched my expectation. I was looking for a place where it is cozy and allows me to fully experience traditional Japanese culture. This place is exactly that.
Nothing that I could say.
Very accommodating about dietary needs, we had one vegan, one vegetarian and one none fish or dairy eater, to make it easy we chose the vegan option for us all. Futons were comfy and made up for us while we had our meal and put away while we had breakfast.
It’s pricey. Could have done with an extra chair in the balcony area, there were three of us, but just two chairs.
Good location, dated hotel and general grounds
Harsh lighting at dinner, staff was very nice but property is very dated and needing a refurbishment. You pay for location and scarcity of better alternatives
Everything was incredible! Beautiful ryokan, amazing onsen, the dinner and breakfast totally luxurious and the staff which was extremely nice and lovely. We loved our stay!
Super close to the station so really ideal for doing the Hakone look staff were amazing food was good if in all honesty I’m not used to such service so I did feel out my comfort zone but that was more me than them they were great no real complaints and the onsen was amazing
Price is pricey can’t lie
Endroit incroyable.
Very clean and well organized
Nothing
Sehr nettes Personal, sehr höflich und aufmerksam. Sehr sauber und komfortabel.
The traditional Japanese accommodations. Beautiful garden surrounding the building.
There was nothing I didn’t appreciate about the property.
Living on a traditional Japanese way in a historical place was an awesome experience. Our stay was very relaxing among the beautiful nature, the calm atmosphere and, of course, the onsen. This place is also great to discover Japanese food outside of the famous dishes that we usually know. We only wish we could have stayed more!
Nulla
Very friendly staff and excellent dinner. Great experience to stay in a traditional Ryokan.
The interiors are dated, the beautiful garden a bit unkept and the house over-all could do with some refurbishments, especially outside.
Przemiły i pomocny personel. Wspaniała lokalizacja. Wyborna kolacja kaiseki oraz śniadanie washoku. Urokliwe widoki z pokoju.
The location and the service
The maintenance conditions and the value for money
I tre onsen a disposizione, in camera, pubblico all'interno della struttura e pubblico all'esterno, sono favolosi.
Location and staff!
Nothing!
The staff on the morning after our stay were incredibly kind, hospitable & helpful. I really enjoyed breakfast, but struggled with the dinner - but that's a me problem as I am not used to the very traditional food that was served. It was presented beautifully & thoughtfully. We were given a complimentary bottle of Sake for our honeymoon, which was very thoughtful & kind. The staff went above and beyond to serve me a completely vegetarian dinner & breakfast. The private onsen was nice & the outdoor onsen was set in beautiful scenery - it was so relaxing. There was nice touches such as a help yourself coffee station & water station outside one of the onsens.
To be honest - we ended up paying around £366 for one night. With this kind of price tag, we were expecting a more luxury experience for the last night of our honeymoon. There was black mould on the toilet roll holder in our bathroom. The view out of our room wasn't really very nice (nothing like I expected from the photos on their Booking.com listing).
Both dinner and breakfast were super tasty
Inner onsen was poor
Very calm, zen garden, excellent food, lovely staff
Loved this place. We lived a traditional experience in this ryokan, with a table for tea in our room that later on was removed and became the bedroom. The food was exceptional, the onsen was also great (there is one indoors and one outdoors), and it was very convenient that tattoos were not an issue. Definitely recommend, and I hope we can cone back to this ryokan when we travel to Japan again.
Nada
Service was exceptional. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and a delight to speak with. The food was fantastic and very traditional and the onsen was comfortable and clean and quiet. The overall experience was very relaxing and wonderful.
Outdoor onsen, food
Slippers
Lovely location surrounded by the garden. Outdoor hot spring on site. Truly felt we landed in a different era.
It needs some serious updating. We stayed in the villa, very spacious for our family, but likely not used often. The smell of mildew was overpowering and off putting. It got better after the 1st day so it needed to be aired before our stay.
This is a truely beautiful bath house in a picture perfect mountain setting. The gardens alone are worth it! We spent only one night as a family of 4 (kids aged 5 & 8). The room is so spacious and very traditional. Nothing western about this place which made it so special. They provided traditional bath robes (Yukata) for everyone with special kids sizes to wear while staying there. Yes it’s older and that is obvious but we loved that it wasn’t a modern shiny hotel and we got to experience a traditional Japanese bathhouse as the locals would. Staff were so friendly and lovely and we wish we stayed longer!
Exceptional and atmospheric; stunning gardens; lovely staff
Nothing
Beautiful gardens, gorgeous property, the peaceful onsen, delicious food and gracious people were so wonderful
We liked everything
This is a beautiful ryokan. Very traditional with a lot of history. It is a 5 minute walk from train station. The accommodations were beautiful, the meals were exceptional & the staff were warm & friendly. We had 2 private onsens in our rooms with access to an open air onsen as well. It is nestled in the forest with babbling brooks & short little walking paths. Would highly recommend.
Nothing!
Gorgeous facilities surrounded by the forest!
The traditional style is fantastic and truly genuine. We loved the room and the view. The garden is sublime, the walk to the outdoor onsen is so beautiful and sitting in the bath in nature a wonderful experience. The food was amazing and so is the staff.
Locatie, eten, personeel en echte Japanse sfeer!
Yukata ( slaapkleding ) luikt een beetje.
Perfect place to experience a traditional onsen.
Most beautiful and well kept place I’ve ever stayed. Amazing views of the garden and the onsets were super relaxing.
Everything was amazing. Loved the open air bath and our room was so cozy. The food was incredible. Just an overall amazing experience.
A very authentic property. Our room came with a private onsen. It wasn’t luxurious but very pretty. The location was perfect, private with beautiful scenery and still close to the train station.
The toilet could do with an upgrade. It was very basic and in our room you had to walk downstairs to wash your hands. There was a wash basin in the toilet but no soap.
The dinner and breakfast are very traditional. The food was tasty, but both my husband and I realized that this was out of our comfort zones for food. The flavors and textures of some of the food were just not what we were used to. That being said, it was tasty. The onsen both private and public outdoor were AMAZING. The water was a great temperature and the views were very peaceful. Definitely a great place for a reset. Lastly the location is 5-8 minutes for the train station which is so helpful as Hakone is all on a hill.
Our room said it would have a bathroom and it did have a toilet. It did not have a shower or tub. We realized that the shower/tub was the bucket next to the onsen we could use to wash our bodies off. This was an interesting experience and fine for one night, but I would not want to do it every night. The mattresses on the tatami floor are quite thin and neither of us slept super well. I think this is likely because my husband and I are not used to this type of sleeping arrangement.
Staff and location, including outdoor Onsen
After a hectic couple of weeks in the cities, we were needing a relaxing and rejuvenating few nights - Gora Kansuiro absolutely delivered. From arrival we were made to feel totally welcome, and shown round the traditional lodgings, the wild gardens and the various onsens. The Japanese breakfast and 10-course dinner were all top restaurant quality, and when we had a couple specific requests (after a while we were struggling with raw tentacle!), these were taken on board by the chef, who created a unique menu each night. There were certain courses that wouldn’t be out of place in a michelin star restaurant. The staff were all helpful and a special shout out to Kana and Saki, the two young waiting staff who were super friendly and talked us through each course and even gave us recommendations for other parts of Japan for future trips! And off the back of our stay here we will definitely be back. From the beautiful setting and rooms, the amazing food, the onsens, and the staff - I really can’t recommend it enough.
Fantastic hotel surrounded by a beautiful garden. Great location, close to a little village, but very private. Our room had a beautiful view. Upon arrival we found delicious mochi and tea in our room.
No screens on windows.
Everything
Nothing really
It was beautiful and everything I could have imagined and more. The attendees were so kind and informative. The meals were delicious and filling and the experience was once in a lifetime. The grounds were magical and everything was very well kept!
Nothing
Amazing spacious villa in stunning beautiful surroundings. Excellent food - both breakfast and dinner. Outdoor onsen magical in the evening air.
Food and service was wonderful. Grounds were delightful. Outdoor onsen was the best. Nature is what makes the experience memorable.
Sleeping on the floor. Changing slippers for different hallway and rooms.
We spent here one night (one night too many). While set in a beautiful garden, and the people who work here are very kind and helpful, this place is absolutely disgusting. It is filthy, has not been renovated for many many years, and is not well kept. The bathrooms are not attached to the room, you have to walk through a hallway, but they’re still private. However, they look so bad and dingy, that it’s uncomfortable using them. See attached pictures. You’re forced to wear slippers that are shared with all other guests . There is no way to get your own private pair. This is athletes foot waiting to happen. Food was not good. Very unfamiliar textures and tastes. Sashimi made me gag. It felt rubbery and had a fishy taste. I felt like I was on a Survivor food challenge, only no reward waited for me in the other side of the challenge. Rooms: very few outlets available. No comfortable place to rest until dinner time, when they set the futons. Futons themselves are very thin and uncomfortable. I felt like the princess and the pea. It was very hard to sleep on the hard floor with no food in my belly. The outdoor onsen looks congruent with the rest of the place- unkept and dirty. There are no signs leading back to the hotel main building from it, and I got lost in the dark and made many wrong turns until I found my way back in the dark. It was dark, spooky and distressing. We paid $900 for one night at this godawful place and I feel cheated. Avoid at all costs. I wouldn’t stay another night here even if it was free.
Desproporcionado
I was very upset at how much it cost for what we received in return, which was a very dated and shabby Ryokan with food we couldn't eat.
Staff was nice though
Beware of the picture it does not tell what the place is. We were with the family and the room didnt have a bed and worst didnt have a shower. For the price we paid it was a scam. We packed up and found another hotel nearby
Real authentic experience - so peaceful
Nothing
staff onsen beauty location
staff were incredibly kind and helpful, ambience and property were tranquil, set in nature, beautiful, simple, felt very authentic. So glad we didn't stay in a larger property
only more time, would love to have stayed another day or two as to not rush the cable car, rope, and lake ashi.
The staff was superb. The breadth of the dinner and breakfast exceeded expectations. Difficult allergies were handled correctly.
A beautiful serene place in the mountains- truly relaxing. The ryokan is exceptionally well maintains, and extremely traditional. It was a joy staying here. The staff were gracious and so accommodating with my 3 year old. The food was exceptional with a huge array of high quality ingredients (think wagyu, sashimi, abalones). The onsen was serene. Thank you for an unforgettable experience.
Excelent experience if you want to enjoy a very true old Japan. Different but great meals
Amabilidad extrema
Onsen medio chafa muy pequeño
The inn is fabulous, set in a lovely wooded garden with old stone paths and secret ponds. The rooms are very traditional, comfortable and charming. Their oare onsens outisde looking into the trees, inside and also in each room. The breakfast and dinner were fabulous; so creative and delicious. The staff were attentive, great fun and spoke great English. We can't wait to go back
Staying at a ryokan for two nights is an experience that is probably not for everyone, but was one of our most memorable stays in Japan. The multi-course meals are beautifully presented and very traditional. The staff is gracious and helpful. Our server, Atsume, was very helpful in explaining the dishes and is delightfully fun and quirky. The tatami mat was uncomfortable at first but we quickly adjusted and slept well. The grounds are stunning, with many pathways and water features.
The turbo sazae seafood dish.
hervorragender Service
Very traditional Japanese ryokan experience. The building feels like it's in its original state, and staying here is like stepping back in time, for better or worse. The staff were very nice and they offer vegetarian kaiseki meals if reserved in advance.
Terrible value for money. Extremely expensive considering the meager accommodations (no attached bathroom in the room) and very small public onsen. For this price, there are better onsen ryokan in Hakone. Having stayed at dozens of ryokan, I was very disappointed in what we got for the price we paid.
Lovely traditional ryokan in a beautiful natural setting
The bedding was perhaps harder than we had expected
This place is totally worth visiting, the food, outdoor onsens, and the vibe were absolutely stunning and authentic, the location is 3 minutes walking distance to the cable car, so you can enjoy the sightseeing from the morning without even going anywhere else. Totally recommend!
Tesis Gora istasyonuna yürüme mesafesinde. Özel onseni olması değer kattı. Oda sade döşenmiş olmakla birlikte gece serilen yatak ve yastık oldukça rahattı. Akşam yemeğinde şef Ayomi sofrayı önceden belirttiğimiz tercihlerimize dikkat ederek özenle hazırladı ve her konuda bilgilendirdi. Check out esnasında yağmur başlaması nedeniyle şemsiye hediyeleri için teşekkürler.
Our stay in Hakone was defined by a level of hospitality that is both refined and deeply personal. From the outset, the staff stood out for their excellent command of English and their consistently thoughtful approach. Upon learning that this was our engagement trip, they went out of their way to make the experience memorable, with two gestures that were both unexpected and meaningful. During dinner, we were offered a complimentary sparkling sake, and we were also upgraded to the Imperial Room — a remarkable space that elevated the entire stay. The room itself is truly impressive. Spacious enough to accommodate a large group, it features a traditional ryokan layout with multiple living areas and a private onsen that comfortably fits two people. Overlooking the surrounding forest, it offers a quiet, immersive connection with nature. The property maintains a very classic character, preserving its original architectural style and atmosphere. This is not a modernized reinterpretation, but rather a place that embraces its heritage — something that adds depth and authenticity to the experience. Dining was consistently excellent, with high-quality ingredients and careful execution in every course, reflecting the standards expected in a traditional ryokan setting. What ultimately defines the stay, however, is the sense of calm. The natural surroundings, combined with the subtle sound of running water from nearby springs, create an environment that feels both serene and restorative. Overall, this is a place that delivers a distinctive and elevated experience, grounded in tradition, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality.
