Reviewed Sep 6, 2026Beautiful property on the bank of the crocodile river, great to have the option of self catering, but the food was top-notch and the service was lovely. Really personal style setting, as dinner and meals are brought to your room. Loved that we had a fire lit for us every night, and we had privacy not to interact with other guests. Furnishings of the rooms are lovely, so many thoughtful details like safari and birding books, tea, coffee, rusks, even flasks to take hot water with on the game drives. Property is beautifully maintained, and the location is excellent, so close to the Malalane Gate, and set in tranquil gardens with excellent game viewing from numerous decks on the property. Loved everything, and can't wait to go back. Special thanks to Leanne for putting on a magical 50th birthday dinner celebration and going above and beyond our expectations. Such a special experience.

Reviewed Mar 22, 2026This lodge is fantastic overall and the food is outstanding! Just about the best lamb chops and steak we’ve ever had anywhere! Ordering on their app was super easy. Location is great as it sits on the crocodile river and animals (hippos, elephants, impalas) came to drink. Note that it is not close any “town” so plan to stay at the lodge. They do arrange game drives into Kruger. Airport transfers (50 min away) are also available. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend this lodge if you’re in that area.

The details on our stay was outstanding the friendly staff can not to enough for you, great day trips Dennis really showed us true African culture and it the day trips such great fun.
Elvis the best safari guide there is, this truly shows with the love he has for making it special for the guests.
We was extremely lucky to see everything and more, we even got to see elephant and leopard and many more up close at the lodge.
One part that makes the lodge so special is how personal Leanne and her team make it for it individually guest.

Reviewed Dec 28, 2025Super super super!!!

Reviewed Aug 16, 2025My family and I stayed at Kambaku River Lodge for safari at Kruger. We had a beautiful 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom suite with a fully-equipped kitchen. After a long day of safari in Kruger, we came home to delicious home-cooked meals served on our private patio, where the staff also set up a fire pit every evening.
The property is situated on the banks of the Crocodile River, so there is a constant parade of wild animals (elephants, hippos, warthogs, birds, etc.) right in the backyard. (The animals are protected from us humans by a discreet electric fence.) It really is such a beautiful property. With binoculars in one hand and a glass of Stellenbosch red in the other and a beautiful South African sunset in the background, what more can one ask for?
As for the safaris, the lodge has its own vehicles and guides for drives into Kruger, with the Malelane gate a short distance away from the lodge. We signed up for morning and afternoon drives and were shown around by Kambaku’s Amanda and Elvis, guides who are very knowledgeable about all aspects of the park. We saw all sorts of amazing animals in short order. It was also very helpful to find the suite equipped with thermos/Stanley containers, blankets, and electric hand warmers, all very useful during the winter.
We were also very impressed with the owner, Leanne (who lives on the property), and her attentive staff, who would stop at nothing to ensure that guests were completely happy with their stay. There is very much a personal touch at Kambaku that you just won't find in most other places.
We chose Kambaku River Lodge because we wanted a memorable, high-quality safari experience, but also a good value—luxury amenities at a non-luxury price point. Importantly, we also felt completely safe in this gated property. For our style of travel, Kambaku was a perfect fit. Highly recommended!

Reviewed Jun 19, 2025We had booked the Joao Luxury River Suite, and it was absolutely stunning - beautifully furnished and so comfortable. It opens up to a magnificent view of the river and there was a herd of elephants right outside our room on the very first day!
We wanted to book the safari experience at Kruger National Park, which was why we booked this accommodation. The safari experience definitely did not disappoint. We had two morning game drives booked, and spontaneously requested an afternoon drive on the first day. Despite the last-minute request, it was accommodated by Leanne and the team. Our guide, Elvis, was knowledgeable, patient and so passionate about what he does. We were so fortunate to see the Big5 during our drives with him. After each game drive, we were welcomed back to the lodge with special drinks - different ones each time! It was such a thoughtful detail that added to the overall experience.
We also went on the Panorama Route tour with Dennis, who was wonderfully chill and accommodating to our pace and preferences. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable day exploring the Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, God's Window etc.
Meals at the lodge were another highlight. The ingredients used were very fresh - had the best salad I've ever tasted. The dinners were an experience in themselves - brought to our private patio and the taste, needless to say, was delicious! Thank you Garry for putting in so much thought into planning the menus for the guests at the lodge. They were delightful.

We have stayed in numerous 5 star properties around Kruger and Kambaku doesn’t live up to their standards. It is a nice place but does not really feel like a 5 star lodge, neither the facilities nor the rooms feel this way.
Also the private pool was not cleaned for 2 first days and it really did not feel nice to be around it/ nor it was encouraging to use and the sun beds felt dirty and we were reluctant to lie down on them. Reviewed Feb 26, 2025The lodge is amazing in all aspects. It is situated perfectly on the edge of the Kruger national park’s river border and there are lots of opportunities for wildlife sightings. We stayed for four nights and saw herd of elephants, impalas, and hippos roaming the river banks in front of the lodge. The room was fantastically clean and homely with many facilities like a kitchenette, king bed, bath tub, shower, a private dipping pool, and a hot/ cold water dispenser. There were also many little touches such as a bird feeder directly in front of the porch, a big torch in the room in case you wanted to wander the premises at night, and a bucket of ice which the staff refilled daily.
The food was unforgettable - packed breakfasts for safari tours include far more than one can eat (muffin, sandwich, banana, apple, biltong, biscuits, cheese, canned drink, chips); the lunch menu was simply but wholesome; dinner was decadent and served hot.
The staff was excellent - Dennis drove us from and to the airport and was our guide for the panorama route; Leanne, the owner, was so forthcoming in sharing her conceptualisation and stories of the lodge; even the service staff were extremely polite and helpful.

Reviewed Jan 17, 2025The lodge was designed to ensure maximum privacy. The rooms are beautifully and well laid out with every amenity you need. Every charming fitting was carefully selected. Loved my monkey chandelier. For me the filtered cold water dispenser was a winner. Got to see 12 hippos grazing next to the river and an egyptian goose tending to her gosslings. At night I heard the hyenas in the Park. The screen doors on the rooms keep out the insects and I did not even have to use the airconditioner. The fan and fresh air accompanied by all the night sounds lulled me to sleep. The fresh food was amazing. They also have a wonderful wine selection. Being able to communicate with my hosts via an App and WhatsApp made for a seamless experience without staff hovering around me unnecessarily. The pool was the perfect temperature. Every night a fire is lit next to your veranda thereby creating an authentic bush experience. The staff were all super efficient and extremely helpful. This lodge is located about 22 minutes from the Malelane Gate making it ideal for a day or few hours visit to the Kruger. Reviewed Sep 21, 2024I stayed at Kambaku for 2 nights but probably should have stayed for longer! It is a beautiful small boutique lodge, with everything you need.
There was a good amount of game that came to the river opposite the lodge - impala, nyala, buffalo, hippo, warthog, elephants and even a lion! Plus lots of birds. I hired the photography hide for a day and while there wasn't as many birds as I was expecting, I had many elephants come to visit. There was a herd of 11 that came, and also a lone bull that came about 6 times over the day and night. It was an incredible experience to be so close to them. The hide is well designed, with great reflections and aesthetics in your photos, plus the use of gimbals, bean bags, comfy chairs, charging points, and spot lights at night.
The pool was very welcome on a hot day, and the rooms seemed to stay quite cool even thought it was very hot outside. The only warning is that the rooms (I stayed in the Shawu room) are not really suitable for friends sharing, since the shower and bath are open to the room.
The dinners were lovely. Note that you don't have choice - you are given whatever they are cooking that night, but they do cater for dietary requirements. My vegetarian and pescetarian meals were excellent.

Reviewed May 30, 2024Size of the rooms where good, rooms had good showers and kitchen was ok equipped, organisation for dinners where ok as well.
We did not get the privacy we wanted as staff frequently came in and out of our garden which is the front area. The location of the property was also only ok-ish due to nearby train tracks, with trains sounding their horns as early as 2/3am. Additionally, the staff were overly pushy in trying to upsell us on extras. At the end of our stay, we received a bill with numerous hidden charges, which we found unacceptable. We booked a morning safari tour twice, „with breakfast included“, only to later discover we were charged a significant extra amount for it, which was unnecessary. The breakfast itself was disappointing, consisting of sugar, white bread, cheese, chocolate bars, and a banana—outrageous.
We opted in for Dinners at the property, while the portions where small-ish we did not receive any extras such as salads or extra vegetables. Deserts where mostly heavy on cream and sugar.
You could just tell that the lodges bottom line was above guest experience.
Overall, while the location served its purpose for our stay, it was far from a 5-star experience. And the worse part was: the lovely photos we liked and fell in love with are not part of the lodge it’s part of the property next door which belongs to the owners.
Absolutely clean and very spacious. Enough hangers for all my clothes for 4 days and lots of shelves. A coat rack which came in handy and two luggage pedestals. 2 cans of peaceful sleep mozzie repellant so I didn’t need my own. You will need it for all the ants that will bite you when you go near the fence to view the animals. Shower is so spacious and bathtub looked so inviting even though I didn’t have enough time to spend an evening there. Shower is gas which meant a hot shower every time! They even managed to loan me a yoga mat as I’d forgotten mine. The location is excellent and I miss the sounds of the bush at night as I slept with my doors open and only the crimestopper locked which also kept the mozzies out! Saw so many elephants, hippos, crocodiles, impala, waterbuck and bird species. They make it hard for you to leave the lodge. The lights on the river at night make it feel way for you to sit and watch the night time animals so much so that you forget the time. An outside evening fire was lit everyday with extra firewood purchasable. Fully equipped kitchen. Lovely snacks packed in cooler boxes on the morning and evening game drives you book with the lodge. The guide is knowledgeable and stops even for you to see birdlife. We got to see big 5 on both my game drives with the lodge, which was the highlight of my trip! Warm ponchos provided for those early morning game drives. Stainless water bottles and flasks available to take with for a hike and free still water in a water cooler for your entire stay! Blankets in the patio for those cold evenings or to take on game drives. Seating inside and outside the suite. The pool was always clean considering it’s autumn. The food for every meal was mouthwatering and large portions enough for me to skip lunch and have a late breakfast and dinner. They’ve almost thought of everything!! 4 nights wasn’t enough!
You can hear rats/birds in the roof at night which woke me up in the middle of one night. The spa is definitely not 5 or even 4 stars even though the lodge maybe which was disappointing. I booked at 45 minute hot stone massage which was only used in the last 10 mins of the massage, the oil was cold from the start, the therapist didn’t ask me what medication I was on nor my areas of concern. Music was played from her phone and not even a speaker. I could hear the owners dog barking during my massage for a few minutes which was distracting. Only selected staff can be tipped directly but for kitchen and cleaning staff you have to put it in an envelope and they share amongst all staff even if you weren’t happy with the service from one or some staff, which really defeats the purpose of an individual tip. You have to book the hide at an exorbitant fee without guarantee of seeing anything exciting whereas other lodges it is free to all guests. Game drives are not included which is not expressly stated on bookings.com and most other lodges clearly indicate this if it is excluded. Alcohol is very expensive, but I didn’t have time to get it beforehand so I bought from the lodge. The pool needs maintenance as the paint looks a bit grimy but I assume this will be done in winter. One of the electric fences on the side didn’t have a warning sign and one of the guests got shocked.

Reviewed May 5, 2024We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Kambaku.
The staff were friendly and always there if we needed something or had a question.
It was peaceful and tranquil, which let us relax.
They offer spectacular views of the Crocodile River and wildlife - even had some lions visit.
Very accommodating, food to die for and extra special was the packed breakfast for our early departure to the park.
Cannot wait to visit again.

Reviewed Dec 6, 2023The location is wonderful with game regularly visiting the river from the Kruger opposite. When we arrived, about a dozen elephant were wading across and hippo were wallowing. The rooms each have their own private terraces where fires are lit each night, and open up into a lovely common area where birds and the 3 incumbent nyala are encouraged. Meals are served on your terrace, ask if you want tea or coffee delivered with breakfast rather than make your own from the room tray. Rooms are comfortable, it's about 15min drive to Melelane gate.
