Very Shabby decoratively - noisy plumbing. Low quality breakfast.

Comfortable and affordable stay. An issue we had was dealt with efficiently.

All good really. Yes the decor is a bit old fashioned and you have to use stairs but really nice and friendly. I very rarely use TVs in hotels anymore but I had brought an HDMI lead to watch the rugby from my laptop so, on this occasion, a bigger TV would have been lovely 🤣

Too many stairs for an older person and no lift. Pls note I did not request a quiet room. Would have really liked a bath but was informed single rooms didn't have baths.

We found our room was very noisy through the night, in the morning we discovered a window was wide open, we shut it and the sound was much less, we wish we found the open window before we went to bed!!

Staff were lovely. Breakfast was great too. Could have done with some pastries for people who don't like a cooked breakfast. But they did give my husband extra toast. Bed linen and towels nice and clean.

Toilet didn't flush well. Shower was just an over the bath type which had a broken wall fixing. Pillows and mattress were too hard for us personally. Too much outside noise so had a lousy night's sleep but the hotel is situated next to the road. Not their fault. Could have done without the windchime though! 😄 Not enough parking spaces. So we didnt want to drive anywhere in the evening as we didn't want to have to park in the limited street parking on return. This is because you can only do it until 8am.

The breakfast was nice and the staff friendly. The hotel was in a decent position to walk into town.

It felt dated and grubby - the bedroom carpet was dirty.

Building very old, dated, needs a complete renovation. Windows in bedroom not closing properly, and very fragile. The continental buffet selection could be better, e.g. fresh fruit, cold meats, cheese etc. Only cereals and yogurts available. Decor still stuck in the 80s, and looks like it.

Quaint property - no luxury but did the job! Basic and clean. Staff pleasant and ready to help. Biggest asset close to shopping mall and centre 5 mins walk and 10 minutes to station

one of the best accommodations I have ever stayed in. The whole hotel feels like you have been transported to the good old times. It was amazing. Everything was clean, amazing breakfast, very friendly staff.

The fabric of the hotel is rather tired. It was clean throughout, towels were fluffy and plentiful, toilet paper was good quality, staff friendly and helpful.

It is a typical British hotel. We were assigned a double room on an upper floor with a small window, as well as a triple room. The weather was very hot, and the heat in the double room was unbearable. The hotel staff moved us to a different triple room, which was fine. Despite the heatwave, there weren't enough fans for all the rooms, so we had only one single fan for the two rooms. A full English breakfast was included in the price. I would like to praise the hotel staff, who were extremely courteous and did their utmost to help—both at the reception and in the dining room.

Not enough fans to help with the heat. The showers are outdated and the rooms feel old. Too many stairs to get to the rooms on the upper level.

Dated but clean & functional room, with TV, hairdryer (unfortunately didn't work), kettle (also didn't work) and towels.

While the room may have been just about adequate, the parking situation was very disappointing. The listing promised free on-site parking, but the car park was full upon arrival and there was no space on surrounding streets (which are all 'permit holder only' between restricted hours). This resulted in me driving round for 20 minutes searching for parking, and ending up and having to park a distance away. When speaking to a member of staff about this upon arrival, they were rather dismissive, simply suggesting I should have blocked another car in - which would require me to be disturbed in the morning to move my car. Future guests should be aware that on-site parking is not guaranteed.

The room was comfortable, if dated. Luckily I was on the first floor (there are no lifts in this obviously quite old hotel). Only a short walk from the War Memorial bus stop, near to the shopping centre and other shops. A cooked-to-order breakfast was included in the price. Plenty of openable windows, useful in the heat (but see below)

The lighting was inadequate, as is often the case with hotels. The hotel sits very close to a busy road, so traffic noise was a bit of a nuisance, particularly at night.

It was very dated. Very uncomfortable. We had no shower pressure. The ceiling fan was something from another planet. Looking at it, £180 for the night, can’t really believe I paid this. Extortionate!

An excellent location, just off the London Road and within easy walking distance to the town centre; there is a small onsite car park. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was small but functioned perfectly. The reception staff were very friendly.

The decor and furnishings are very jaded and need upgrading. There are three upper floors (we were on the third floor) and no lift so this hotel is definitely not recommended for anyone with mobility or heart-related issues. Breakfast was functional (I've had better) and service was very slow.

Location was near lots of shops and eateries. Easy walk to train station. Breakfast was exceptionally good and fresh. Staff very pleasant. Decor very traditional. Everything clean and and maintained. No lift, and potentially many stairs so be aware of that.

Advertised as free WiFi available but it was EXTREMELY spotty in my room (2nd floor) to the point I couldn't watch anything or make a videocall as it cut out so often. It seemed better in breakfast room so perhaps a better router would help? Shower room could do with updating(patchy tiles etc) but did the job. Only a sachet of shower gel provided which would have been helpful to know before.

Fantastic, cooked to order breakfast. The rooms were comfortable, beds great. The staff were very helpful, nothing was too much trouble.

Due to the hotel being an old building,there was no air con.We left the windows open at night and it was relatively quiet,except as you would expect on bin day. The rooms were a little dated but this all takes time and expense.

El desayuno estuvo bien, sirven el típico desayuno ingles contundente, pero si no puedes optar por tostadas , cereales y otros productos aunque no excesivamente variado. La ubicación para nuestra asistencia al evento era buena y cerca de la estación de ferrocarril para desplazamientos a la City. El personal atento y muy agradable.

Como muchos Hoteles ingleses carece de aire acondicionado y los días de nuestra estancia hizo un calor insoportable por lo que las noches fue difícil conciliar el sueño. Además como es un edificio que debe tener alguna catalogación histórica el acceso a las habitaciones era un poco complicado y con cambio de escaleras un poco laberíntico.

Lovely quaint ( but large) room with a very calming, scenic view. I just absolutely loved my stay here. There is free parking ( and spaces!) and breakfast is included. Breakfast was served in a lovely dining area, and the food was really great. I'm not mentioning the room number I stayed in just so that it's free when I want to book the hotel again lol ..

there was no cleaning, heavy smell ,spiders, and furniture very old and dirty, and breakfast was very weak, and staff robbed, seemed to do nothing and unprofessional very high price I will never go back

Fab location, only a few minutes walk into town. Really lovely breakfast. I arrived really early and the room was already cleaned and ready at 10.30am so I could check in. Great parking as well, about 10 spaces but we all got spaces.

Staff were all very polite and welcoming. Karen was especially helpful allowing us to change rooms due to the extreme heat. Breakfast was very good quality food.

Check in was a breeze. Our room was aired, clean, well laid out with a super en suite. The hotel is a short walk of a minute or two from the centre of town. Breakfast is fabulous with cereals,fruit juices yoghurt. Plus a full English. with toast and preserves,if you still have room.

I can not think of anything that could of improved our stay beyond the normal services and facilties provided.

Carrying 2 large heavy bags up 60 steps to our room on the top floor, i.e there is no lift. Room was very hot - no air con. Admittedly temperatures were exceptional that week. The duty manager on the night we checked in was very casual, and didn't offer to help carry bags up. I have a medical condition which meant my 78 yr old wife had to carry both bags up the stairs. Other staff were extremely helpful and friendly however

Although a little dated it just adds to the buildings charm, we arrived early to a very warm welcome & the room was clean & well equipped. Its well placed for the town centre & the breakfast was super.

Our second stay at the Russell (in-laws live locally) and the first in extreme heat. Staff went out of the way to find us a fan. A clean, well-equipped room with shower and bath, good Wi-Fi and plenty of coffee. Great breakfast.

The staff were very welcoming and changed our room to accommodate my wife's mobility issues when I put in a late request by email a few days before we arrived. A very good selection at breakfast and would have no problem recommending the hotel to anybody who would be staying in the area.

The hotel is a mish-mash of styles with decoration clearly having been done as needed. It is all perfectly nice but visually a bit 'odd'. As it's England we could probably describe it as 'eccentric'.

My room was a bit on the small side, rather noisy as it lacked double glazing and the mattress on the bed was uncomfortably firm.

I was able to park in the car park wish I didn't expect but was great as we drove up from Portsmouth for a funeral. So we're able to make it to the wack without hassle. I will definitely recommend & use

I liked my whole experience. Though a little run down with decorating/ window. It reminded me of my great visits to Blackpool. I will definitely recommend .

Close proximity to the local facilities and mainline train station. Santi was very accommodating and helpful, a real asset to the hotel. Great breakfast served with patience and a smile. My wife and I would definitely stay again.

Parking was a bit tense, arriving mid evening the ten space hotel car park (unusually generous for size of hotel/location I thought) was already full so I parked on a single yellow opposite the hotel in a side street before moving the car by 8am into a vacated hotel car park space. This worked out well, alertness and speedy action needed for the manoeuvre!

it is a practical hotel to stay in for one or two nights and reasonably priced but dont expect the facilities as in a 4 or 5 stars hotel.

The staff were exceptional, such lovely people who will go above and beyond for you to accomodate your needs and special requests. The breakfast was incredible. The rooms themselves have very comfy beds, have everything you could possibly need and very quiet. Had one of the best sleeps I have had in ages. It's location near the park, station and shopping area is perfect. It's a lovely charming hotel that would love to come back to.

The decor is a little tired looking, but that's part of the charm.
