The details and history.
We especially enjoyed the friendliness of the staff. They made us feel welcome and relaxed. One of our favorite places in Buffalo and we will be back. Thanks to all!
The look
No toiletries
Great history, great rooms, great preparation for when I eventually end up in a functioning asylum. An overall unique and cool stay.
Nothing
The history was amazing
Our room was very small for the price! Not worth it. Also very confusing layout, took us 40 minutes to actually find our room and there is only one staff member there to ask for help so if you’re lost you’re in trouble.
Beautiful building and room
We overheard guest complaining about bug bites
It was safe and very convenient to get in and out of.
There was a lot of loitering going on from kids outside that weren’t staying at the hotel
Beautiful
Just a search on booking
very specious
bathroom was not clean
The room was nice, a good size, nice bathroom. Pleasant stay
What a cool place to stay! It's so impressive; like being in a museum. The video about the renovation is extremely well-done and so educational. It was raining most of the time we were there so we didn't get a chance to tour the grounds. The hotel is very close to a little business district with plenty of eating areas. Again we didn't get to explore too much because of the hard rain.
Location is great. Staff that was welcoming, friendly and doing its best. Rooms were fine and beds very comfortable. Unique setting.
Breakfast buffet was terrible if you weren’t keen on eggs - cereal, one type of yogurt - horrible muffins, no toast. Turns out you could order breakfast but no one told us until the next morning. One waitress who was run off her feet. Over all the bar in the evening and breakfast was very under staffed and existing people had way to much to do but worked very hard to serve. Overall gloominess of hotel. You were practically sitting in the dark in the breakfast room - I asked the waitress to turn the lights up and she did which helped but someone should have thought about it. Overall the services (not the staff who were lovely and trying very hard) needed better management. There is lots of potential for this hotel to be a very good one in its unique setting. There was just overall a poor choice in the decor to use grays, blacks and dark woods in an already dark (but striking) building. Suppose there is nothing to do about that. Rooms are starting to look tired - stained chairs and carpets. However they were comfortable and well appointed.
Nichts.
The rooms had very high ceiling. It's clean and comfortable with study desk. It's unique experience with ancient architectural ambience. We enjoyed our stay there. No parking fee on site too.
no mini-fridge in the room.
The architecture is amazing. The location is convenient to many interesting sites. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable about the history of the building.
Nothing.
My room was not made up on one day. I was out of the hotel from 10 am - 8 pm.
Unique hotel
Food definitely needs to be either included or taken up several notched for the price they are asking for.
Breakfast was not included. There were cold cereals, coffee annd tea and like items available. Staff was very wonderful and very accommodating in heating up hot milk for me.
An onsite restaurant that served more than pizza and salad would be nice.
Nice boutique hotel. I enjoyed the history and museum was a big plus.
Historical interest; room design and comfort; location
Restaurant facilities
We enjoyed our 2 night stay. The building is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Convenient free parking.
Driving onto the grounds, the signage was confusing as to where the hotel entrance was located. Given the property’s price point and luxury feel, we were surprised the rooms had plastic cups and motel quality toiletries. There was no room service and no staff to help with luggage or respond to requests for a bottle opener or cutlery - we had to come down and get it for ourselves.
Fantastic building
No espresso machine on site
Very nice location and rooms.

Nothing I will definitely stay here again
Historical location, beautiful rooms
They have no process for late checkout requests. Fully understanding that late-checkouts are not a guarantee and are available upon request, but I called the morning of the scheduled checkout date and they said they’d call me back but never did. I even offered to pay a fee for late checkout but it never materialized. Very hard on us after a Fourth of July weekend stay.
A very unique hotel with a rich history, beautifully restored.
Nothing
What a joy to stay in one of America's great architectural masterworks! So much history, so many stories. Airy beautiful public spaces, comfortable rooms, lots of nooks and crannies to explore, great museum downstairs which tells the history of the building and the patients it once housed. Moments away from the Albright-Knox Gallery and the Burchfield Penny, short drive from downtown. Highest recommendation!
The history
Staff needs to inform about tours of the favility as soon as guests arrive so they do not miss on the only tour at 10am.
Remarkable place. Built by HH Richardson with landscaping by Olmsted. The three central buildings are restored as the hotel, and the remaining 10 buildings are still on the list to do - but the cost is just astronomical. Huge place. The hotel is just wonderful, as it gives you a feeling of the way they were trying to treat mental patients in the 1880's- lots of fresh air, beautiful views, communication and exercise. 16 foot tall ceilings, wide hallways, it has the air of a conference center, but the feel that you are there as a guest. The renovation was completed in 2017, but it has been tough with Covid, and they are doing well. Nice staff, excellent interpretive exhibit downstairs. Great walk around the grounds. You should stay there and take in every interpretive exhibit you can. It is well worth while.
I loved how they kept the history alive.
Very cool history and old architecture!
Food was average. Chicken seemed it was frozen food, not fresh. The bar didn't have beer selection and why don't you have local brewery beers?⁸
The location was great.
It took a lot longer than it should have which staff explained so we understood the why.

Hotel itself was nice. Rooms were just OK no refrigerator in the room which I thought was weird.
Kind of out-of-the-way
This is not a casual hotel, it's a museum. You contribute to the fund to preserve an historical monument. As such, there are some concessions to be made, but overall, it's a great experience. Parking is free and great, location is unbeatable for the AKG. Rooms are tall, quiet, and confortable. My air conditioning worked well, but the fan was a bit noisy.
You live on a campus near a psychiatric hospital, which could make some people uneasy. There were ants in my room, but I left blueberries on the desk. Once the blueberries were removed, the ants were gone. I did see a falcon with its prey on top of a car in the parking lot, so there's that. No mini refrigerator in the room. The dining room is small, and breakfast is not included. Despite the limited choices, food was good.
The hotel is beautiful and the beds were comfy.
I wouldn't say I didn't like anything. I was nervous about sleeping in an old mental hospital. I slept great and would stay again.
It was incredible! The history is amazing!Rooms were beautiful!
We loved everything!
Iconic architecture. Rooms small but adequate
Fitness center a joke. Broken machines. COMPLETELY INADEQUATE. service AWFUL. Front desk clerks were rude and combative
We had a wonderful experience working with The Richardson Hotel for our recent program. The team was responsive, flexible, and incredibly helpful throughout the planning process and onsite execution. A special thank you to Devery and Jeff for their support. Devery was patient, solution-oriented, and communicative as we worked through final details and last-minute needs. Jeff and the onsite team were also very helpful in making sure the event ran smoothly and that our team felt supported. We truly appreciated the professionalism, hospitality, and willingness to jump in and help find solutions. Thank you to The Richardson Hotel team for being such great partners!
Velmi čistý a vkusně zrekonstruovaný hotel z psychiatrické léčebny vše bylo v pořádku
Velmi špatný vzduch dobře seřídit klimatizace Pokud vůbec fungovalo
Great value for money in a quiet location. The building has plenty of character with high ceilings and wide corridors. Rooms are well presented.
Breakfast was a bit disappointing.
Iconic architecture in a great location
Worst service. Fitness center pathetic. Most machines non-functional. No one seemed to care.
Cool hotel, love the actual hotel
Its proximity to the psych ward
The hotel was so amazing. The architecture and renovation are spectacular. Very convenient location to the highway, and north and south Buffalo.
It’s seemed like the bar and restaurant were understaffed. Took a really long time at breakfast to get our food and it was wrong. The bartender was in the weeds when we went in for a late night drink.
An interesting stay in a very historic building
The bartender is always so friendly and accommodating! We love him! We go to the hotel bar just to hang out with him. And he's always got our beer.
The bathrooms in the rooms are not the cleanest. The rooms need refrigerators. None of the rooms have them, no matter how expensive the room is. We stay at other hotels just because the other ones have refrigerators and The Richardson does not!
It was clean & close to the AKG museum. Close to a bus stop to take you to City hall. Walkable to restaurants & coffee shops. Park designed by Olmsted out in front which you could walk around.
Not very safe at night to walk around the neighborhood.
The atmosphere was incredible. To stay in a building such as this was truly unique. Definitely recommend. the hotel is wonderfully updated and renovated keeping the original charm of the building. location was on point and the grounds were lovely to walk around. Plenty of parking.
No hand soap in bathroom asked a maid and was told they were all out. Never got any, not a huge downers as there was shower gel and we bought a small one at cvs the next day but was a bit funny.
Unique atmosphere. Beautiful historic Building. Rooms are average. It was clean. Bed is okay, but definitely not decadent. You know what I mean, that luxurious, cozy, never slept so good, feel. Dang! Also, No fridge. Door hard to close. Cleaning staff left it open all day while we were gone. Honestly, probably didnt realize it was 1/2 closed from the noise it makes when closing. The doors are quite heavy but do not shut without some force. The TV is not a smart TV. Disappointing for me as I watch as I wind down from the day. For the experience I was expecting, we were underwhelmed. It could be SO much more. I was hoping it would be a place we would want to stay when we return. We are going to the Delavan to finish our stay.
Beautiful building, amazing history, kind staff, comfortable rooms.
No refrigerator in our room.
experienced of historic building
bit lack of original between the interior decor with the historiy
Great stay, love the small museum on the bottom floor showing the history of the campus. Loved the historic architecture and design decisions
Incroyable l’hôtel. On se croirait dans un film. Je regarde à 110%
Tout était parfait
