Good bar and breakfast. Bathroom well appointed. Nice facilities
Staff not always available, door locked, phone not answered on arrival, but sorted later.
Loved the quietness, home made food

Superb pub Great food Hardworking and friendly staff
Room was struggling to stay cool
The room was very spacious, clean, tidy and comfortable. Food was excellent.

Little further out than we thought but our fault for not checking. However we really loved it when we got here
Bed was little uncomfortable
I stay here regularly when travelling to Chelmsford for work. It’s always a lovely stay! Lovely rooms, friendly staff, nice breakfast. The food of an evening in the pub is always good too. Would highly recommend.
The place was great and all the staff were lovely
I thought it was all very nice in a perfect location.
Huffer sandwich is a must. Very accommodating staff, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend and stay again. 😊
Nothing.
Very comfortable room with large ensuite bathroom (actually wet room for wheelchair access). Plenty of parking. WiFi ok. Breakfast good (extra). A nice pub too with plenty of outside space in the garden.
Unable to get in touch on the evening before and checkin day. Answering machine only. Very frustrating.
Have stayed, and eaten and drunk beer, at the Compasses many times and it's always great. Rooms are clean and comfortable and quiet, pub is among the best you'll find anywhere, lovely location. Best - and best-value - place to stay in mid-Essex.
Nothing really. Could do with being able to open the windows wider and get more ventilation into the rooms on hot nights.
Friendly ataff
Friendly, clean and tidy. Lovely location
Pub closed at 3pm
Beautiful pub and location. Food was excellent, staff friendly and the room wonderful.
There were ants at the front door but when reported was dealt with straight away.
Cooked breakfast was amazing. Proper butcher quality meat. Staff attentive and engaging, nothing was any trouble at all. The rooms have been recently fitted out. Lovely walk-in shower and imaginative decor. Very pretty spot in the countryside. The pub was tastefully done up without losing any of the traditional.
Nothing
Traditional old pub in the classic style with nicely appointed rooms close by. Great atmosphere and food.
Breakfast service was a little slow and haphazard
Lovely pub, very good room, helpful staff, beautiful countryside.
Just for us we needed a cab and it was a little awkward. But there you go you cant have everything.
Fabulous country pub, perfectly located for an overnight stay on our way to the south coast. Good food, easy parking, lovely quiet room. Looking forward to staying again soon!
Nothing.
Dinner superb, great menu, and choice of beers, ciders and wines - weather good so enjoyed in the lovely garden. Room surrounded by beautiful roses, their fragrance was much appreciated!
Arrival and booking in very easy. Clean and tidy spacious room, but the weather and as main window opening directly onto the roadside & parking area meant room very hot and stuffy even with fan on. Food and service in pub great
Only thing would be some better form of cooling or some form of external privacy screening so that window could be opened for ventilation
Lovely rooms, nice bathrooms - clean and well presented. Great and very pretty location, perfect for local walks in the surrounding countryside. I was attending a wedding at Leez Priory and the location was perfect for me.
Lots of character, very nice atmosphere, plenty of parking at the front & side of the building. Staff were all forthcoming & extremely helpful. The dinner & breakfast were both great.
No air con. When we stayed it was a heatwave reaching 35 degrees so this was an issue but any other time of the year this wouldn’t be a problem.
Beautiful location.Superb breakfast. Rooms are very well appointed and gorgeous. We will definitely be coming back!
Nothing.
Welcoming hosts, clean and detailed accommodation, fantastic pub, excellent beer and food, couldn’t ask for more, would stay again 👍

This is simply a great pub! with great beer and great food
We had a wonderful welcome and spent a very comfortable night there prior to a wedding nearby the following day. All facilities were excellent and the breakfast was delicious. Friendly staff who took their time to explain and interact.
Supper and breakfast were delicious! Great selection of beers. Lovely roses around bathroom and one of the bedroom windows.
A very traditional English pub . Excellent choice of beers and lagers which are kept in the back there fore no taps or pumps on the bar but an up to date list of cask ales etc on a board .
Nothing really . You have to accept “ in keeping “ furniture with an old pub .
It’s in a fantastic location. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. They apologised for the chef being off ill. The disabled facilities were brilliant.
There was a family with noisy kids on the next table, but it was early evening so to be expected.
Room was clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Friendly pub, serving good food and drink. With nice rooms out the back to stay in
The room was lovely. Warm and very clean. Had everything you needed.. if the men enjoy real Ale, this is the place to stay. There was a good selection of food offered for breakfast and evening meal. The pub is a very popular place to go for a small village. I would highly recommend a stay.
The room was very warm, struggled to sleep on the first night, so the second day we turned all the heating off in the bathroom as well as the main room and it was a lot more comfortable.
Love the location in the countryside away from it all
The pub is set amongst fields in a beautiful remote location with an area for accommodation attached to it. It got really busy on Saturday afternoon/evening and it was evident that this was clearly a local's favourite! The food was absolutely fantastic and the atmosphere welcoming and friending. The breakfast was great too! Would recommend staying here as the scenery is stunning!
Quiet, tidy, nice location, stylish rooms

Beautifully clean stunning location proper pub

Let down by very poor comunication
Beer, food, location, rooms all good. Sadly trying to get a VAT receipt seems to be impossible? After four polite requested in person and by email it sadly seems impossible?
This is my 2nd time and I will be returning in 4 weeks it’s a beautiful location great staff and food and the room is cosy and quaint
I liked everything
Mooie omgeving, lekker rustig
The welcome and the promptness to have our room ready for a wedding elsewhere that afternoon. Service was excellent for lunch and breakfast - both served by very friendly ladies
Nothing
De locatie: heel mooi landelijk Naast de kroeg; hele mooie oude en gezellige kroeg , heerlijk kunnen eten Kamer was heel schoon en mooi ingericht, lekkere zeep en shampoo!
Eigenlijk niks
The room was great. Underfloor heating and super shower and nice simple but classy decor. Very comfy bed too. We had been walking some of the Essex Way and this was a bit off route but a really lovely place to stay. The food selection on offer was extensive - and despite that it was *not* the “processed” stuff sometimes offered up. So well done to the chef! We walked on to Chelmsford which was a beautiful walk as suggested by BPT https://www.britishpilgrimage.org/portfolio/chelmsford-cathedral-pilgrimage-in-a-day
Didn’t like the room name! ( “Witchfinder”) - although the room was fabulous
Friendly, helpful staff. Stunning beautiful accommodation which was c very clean and comfortable. Loved the underfloor heating in our room. We had tea, coffee & hot chocolate supplied in our room. Really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Thank you
Honestly I can’t find anything negative to write. I loved it.
The fact t was a proper traditional pub. Also that rooms were away from bar. The vibe was good. Landlord went out his way to get us fed. Would highly recommend venue.
Quilt too hot for me. Underfloor heating takes getring used to. Got annoyed with tv controls.
Clean, comfortable and really friendly
Would prefer a bigger choice for breakfast
Accommodation was very good and spotlessly clean
No contact information in the bedroom which is a separate building to the pub
Our particular room was very big , it was comfortable and warm. We had a good nights sleep. There's p arking and breakfast available if you want it

The staff are all well versed in their products and always good for a recommendation
No changes need to be done as the unique food and drinks offer cannot be bettered

Good evening meal and terrific real ales. 5 in all all served from the barrel
Went for medium breakfast, which was just under £10. Not good value for 2 slices of toast and 2 poached eggs, cup of coffee and orange juice. Yogurts taken away before I could have one. Had to ask for another cup of coffee. Room was good with under floor heating, with a great shower. However it was too hot. Turned Thermostat to 15c but still had to open a window to sleep. Also the double bed was a tad small and we are not big people. One of the bedside lights didn't work
Loved the pub and the room a bit out of the road especially having no transport but staff room food were all very nice.
A bit out the road without a car a bit stranded
Stay at the Compasses several times a year. It's the best value comfortable en suite accommodation in mid-Essex and is attached to one of Britain's best pubs. What's not to like?
Nothing.
My room was perfect, underfloor heating which made the room incredibly cosy. The pub was fabulous, with a roaring fire, welcoming staff and locals and delicious food.
The only thing I could comment on is the lighting in the bedroom. It was a small room (perfect for me) but it had 2 huge chandeliers which made the room incredibly bright, and then 2 small spot light (bedside lights) which were too dim.
It was in a wonderful location and really great for our little dog. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable.
Nothing to dislike.
Was nice and clean and comfortable
Considering it was new year day they was knocking on our door at 10.01 telling us we needed to leave the room as was now late for check out. Thought could be a little less abrupt with this on new year day. Was then all a bit awkward waiting for our cab, almost like it was an inconvenience us still being there.
We attended a wedding nearby and booked an overnight stay at compasses, arriving early to enjoy a beautiful traditional English pub, great food and a great pint with very friendly staff.
Clean, stylish and comfortable
Quaint and historic, with a warm welcome and beautiful rooms!
Nothing!
Excellent staff and facilities
