Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Excellent hotel, beautiful rooms and pool area. We ate at the restaurant and the pool bar, both were excellent!
Beautiful views, well appointed and large room. Service was great, breakfast was excellent and the spa and pool area were really good - wish we had taken more advantage of them. A quiet neighbourhood that is still close to all the action. We were going to stay in Flores but really glad we stayed here instead.
Minor ones - the room was pretty dark - some more lighting around the bathroom area would be valuable and there was no toilet paper holder.
The hotel was beautiful and very well appointed. The location and the views were amazing and the breakfast was one of the best I’ve ever experienced.
Nothing
Beautiful spotlessly clean hotel. Breakfast was excellent and fresh. Lots of little extras to make the hotel a step above.
If you’re planning to spend some time by the pool, there are not many sun beds.
Beautiful hotel, great location with incredible views, staff were brilliant and so friendly. Food was excellent too. We loved our stay and would definitely come back.
Spacious room
Service wasn’t the best especially in the restaurant.
Good location and nice terrace
Way too expensive for what you get. I do not thing this is 5star worthy.
The pool suite is a must try! The little details made it extra special. Welcome gift with a hand written note and a physical key.. we really appreciated that! The staff is well trained. An example of how hotel staff should be.
Ants in the room wasn't too lovely.
PEQUENO ALMOÇO MUITO BOM. excelente atendimento.
GOSTEI DE TUDO. Funcionários muito simpaticos.
Lokacioban jo,reggeli bőseges.
Hideg a medence.
9 Hotels in our journey through Portugal and this was a highlight, not only because of the city. The service was very good, many beautiful areas to relax and the personnel was fun to talk to with great recommendations and a good taste of Port wine
The view from the pool area looks better on the photos, and it could be better isolated from the street.
Location is easy and view is fantastic from the restaurant.
Very helpful and friendly staff - lovely food and pool
Staff
Food,menus,alcohol selection, prices..too expensive
Excellent service, great location with a beautiful view from the restaurant. Tje staff is very attentive
Fabulous hotel in a great location with exceptional view of the river. Staff and food were amazing but the rooms are quite small.
The staff was great. The views from the terrace is nice.
Over valued for what it offered: - low quality towels (frayed bath robe) - poor lighting in bathroom - disconnecting spa meant having to walk with robes through reception and bar room - unshaded terrace at breakfast time
Excellent location with a superb view of the river. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and professional.
The room was quite small and the bathroom is pretty much part of the bedroom.
Alles top.
Stunning views Lovely pools and spa Location
Staff not friendly or interested in engaging about stay Room very overpriced as thought we had paid for room with a view but huge tree restricting view
We had a very enjoyable stay at Torel Avantgarde in Porto. It is a beautifully designed hotel with real character, a wonderful atmosphere and stunning views accross Porto to Gaia. There is a choice of two pools and a well equipped spa. We stayed in the Orson Welles room, one of the hotel’s Signature Rooms, and unfortunately we did not feel that the room quite lived up to either the “Signature” description or the price. The floor was noticeably uneven and extremely creaky, to the point where simply walking around the room created a surprising amount of noise. While we appreciated the individuality and character of the room, for the premium being charged we had expected a higher standard of comfort and finish along with clear views accross Porto. The view out of the room was restricted by a large tree despite the photos showing a clear view of Porto. The other aspect that fell slightly short was the level of engagement from some of the staff, particularly at breakfast. While service was generally efficient, we felt that more warmth, attentiveness and genuine interaction with guests would have elevated the experience considerably. At times there was general grumpiness, aloofness and no smiling or welcome. It felt slightly at odds with the welcoming and personal service one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. We enjoyed our stay mainly due to the location, views, pool & spa and delicious breakfast. There is much to recommend about Torel Avantgarde. It is a distinctive and memorable hotel in Porto, but greater attention to the quality of the premium rooms and a warmer, more engaging approach to service would make the experience much more deserving of its positioning and price.
The hotel was absolutely beautiful and immaculately clean. The staff went above and beyond to make you feel welcome and were always helpful! Highly recommend!
Everything!
The room lighting. Was quite dark
Was absolutely perfect. Location, service, amnesties, food and staff made our 4 night stay exceed expectations. Only thing i would point out is the poor lighting in the room.
Good location, very nice view. The hotel and the rooms are carefully decorated.
A fantastic place and a great stay overall. We stayed in the maisonette (Alfred Hitchcock room) for our wedding night. A few minor things that could have been better. The gate to the room was in need of repair and a few minor things in the room, like the flame effect fireplace not able to be used in summer. Main thing was the description of a maisonette (I believe now changed on their website since we booked) where in reality it is on one level, not two. But from the photos it appears a duplex, but that is actually the balcony of the rooms above. None of this takes away though from a terrific stay, great customer service, amazing breakfast and complimentary extended check out offered. And you won't get better in Porto for views of the river and your own private pool and jacuzzi. We shall be back in the future!
Breakfast was excellent. So much choice, and they do cater to those with gut sensitivities. Everything is made fresh. Location wasn't bad. 1215- minute walk to the Clerigos.
Service was slow during dinner in the evening.
Beautiful hotel with the friendliest staff that go above and beyond for guests. Our room was very clean and spacious and house keeping came and did turn down service every night which was lovely. The hotel restaurant was also amazing, breakfast was really nice, lots of choice every day and you are able to order extra dishes. Location is perfect just a 10 minute walk away from the city centre and 5 minute uber to the Ribeira which was perfect. All round our expectations were always exceeded and my sister and I had the perfect time in Porto. We can’t wait to come back! Thank you all for our lovely stay and experience ! :)
The hotel is in a good location in Porto and has great views. But for a 5 star hotel, it left a lot to be desired. The staff was lovely and Mauricio at the bar was excellent, the highlight of our stay. The other highlight was the breakfast service. For food that was complementary, I found it a great start to each day. Here are some of the items for improvement: - One of their two pools looks like it is supposed to be a large hot tub. Very weak jets. Just a lukewarm pool at best. For a 5 star hotel, it is not up to par. - I went to the front desk and requested an extra water bottle or asked where I may be able to find one. They said one water bottle per room max and no, everywhere is closed. Neither of these were true. I walked myself to a tiny store with a fridge where I grabbed the water I wanted. Water is a basic necessity and an easy request from a guest and that was a disappointing answer from a Michelin Key Hotel. - The downstairs gym/locker room/steam room is a literal maze. Mirrors everywhere and if you are moving quickly you actually may run into a wall. The gym is below average. The steam room is open 12 hours but front desk told us 24 hours so we walked down there and spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why it wouldn't work. Turns out we just got told the wrong thing. None of these areas for improvement are major. But for the price you pay, there are better options. Would absolutely stay somewhere else next time.
We stayed in the hotel for a week with our six month old. We received a very warm welcome. The hotel is well-equipped for baby guests. There was a warmed pool inside alongside the outside pool and baby shampoo and shower gel was offered as well. The breakfast was really nice and included lots of different fruits, bread, cheese and so on. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant at the hotel, Digby, offered an amazing menu as well. Apparently Digby is run by another company. This means that getting drinks in the evening was only possible at the bar or outside, and not in the patio since these spots were reserved for restaurant guests for lunch or for dinner. Although this was a pity, the bar was extremely cozy with a flowered ceiling. The staff was also very correct. They handled a situation with an extremely rude hotel guest that demanded a seat in the restaurant for drinks in the evening without having dinner in a very calm manner. If you are not used to city noise, then it is possible that it might be slightly more difficult to relax at the poolside. However, the location and the view makes more than up for this issue. If you book a hotel nearby the city center, you cannot expect to only hear cricked noise.
We had a very lovely stay at this hotel. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault it at all. Great atmosphere too
This is a magical place—-beautiful hotel, stellar service, great food and gorgeous views of Douro!! We will definitely come back and recommend to friends and family. The Mozart room is wonderful—balcony, sunken tub with views of river!! Thank you to the staff!!
The hotel experience is 10/10 the views from the pool, the spa and the service is quite literally amazing. The view from our room was literally like looking at a beautiful painting. I whole heartedly recommend Torel. The only thing that made our stay a but difficult was that the was no full length mirror in the room and the lighting was a bit dim.
We would like to sincerely thank the entire team for making our stay so special. Everything was simply perfect. The room was beautiful, the swimming pool and the jacuzzi were absolutely incredible, and the view was breathtaking. We truly enjoyed every moment and created memories that we will never forget. A very special thank you for the outstanding organization of the marriage proposal. Everything was prepared with such care, professionalism, and incredible attention to detail. We especially appreciated the discretion of the staff, which allowed the surprise to remain a complete secret until the very last moment. It could not have been more perfect. Your kindness, dedication, and exceptional service made this one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Thank you again to everyone involved for helping create such an unforgettable moment. We will always remember our stay with great happiness and hope to return one day.
The property was very nice with a fantastic view over the Douro River
I left a pair of Paul Smith swim shorts in the room, we were getting an early train to Vigo. I emailed the hotel and they said the swimwear had not been found. They were not in our luggage and so had been left behind, my fault, but the hotel denied that they had been left which just couldn’t have been true. But c’est la vie

My review is mixed. I felt like I got ripped off. A day after making my reservation, I wanted to add an extra night. They said I had to do that with the reservation desk, who didn’t get back to me for three weeks (after several emails and phone calls). By then, the rate more than doubled and they wouldn’t give me the rate I first got when I inquired. It was too late to cancel the other nights , so we did it anyway. But if I go back I won’t book with them again, because of the headache involved. The service was very good. Everyone was very attentive. Breakfast was great! Rooms kind of small but had what we needed. Definitely glad we asked for restaurant recommendations, which were spot on what we wanted.
This is a great hotel. It's in a great location, has great facilities and has amazing staff. The breakfast was also very good.
Everything was excellent from the staffs to the amenities of the hotel
Loved our stay. Fabulous hotel, staff that are super friendly and can't do enough for you plus great breakfast and lunches with an amazing view. Recommend the balcony suites. Room 34 was double aspect with lots of space. Would stay here again. We really enjoyed looking down into Porto and over to Gaia spotting everywhere we'd been. My only minor quibble....the pool area could do with some better padded single loungers.
Breakfast was very good and a wide selection of food. The service was really good. Everybody were very friendly and every request was met with a smile. Location was ok - but a little further from the City Center than expected but it was ok to walk the 10-15 minutes to get to some stores and restaurants.
I have a hard time believing this was a 5 star hotel and the value for money was much lower than expected. We had ants in one room (was taken care off after 4 hours), door handle falling off on another. We didn't enjoy the pool. Look better on the pictures and there were more pigeons using the pool than guests. The room service was not very punctual. For example one time we were told 15 min and it took an hour - and the order was wrong.
Third time here. Everytime I saw the staff changed but the mindset is still the same: lots of care. 100% flexible about your times. The hotel is beautiful in a unique way, the maisonette it’s just pure relax. Thank you, see you next time.
Welcoming staff, good breakfast, lovely location with river views, great room.
Parking expensive
Staff are amazing. Hotel artwork is very cool
Hotel was AWFUL. The a/c in our room never worked, even though we requested service many times. Avoid room No. 50 at all cost. I would NOT recommend this hotel at all. Expensive and really bellow a 5 Star hotel standard.
It was amazing. The hotel had amazing breakfast, and main courses where so delicious me and my daughter loved our stay especially after going out during the day to visit the main sites we came back to our hotel tidy from room service. Lovely views especially in the evening.
Excellent hotel, amazing view from Max Ernst room! Nothing was too much trouble, breakfast excellent, spa facilities great and everywhere so stylish and spotlessly clean
Fantastisk alt sammen.
Comfortable rooms. Great location. Great breakfast. Good restaurant in hotel. Decent gym
Over priced. Quirky lay out in our room
We were actually in the Private Residences which is really beautiful. A little bit out of the main hustle and bustle
A couple of teething problems as it was a soft opening. I look forward to coming back
Our stay at Torel Avantgarde was a lovely experience overall. The staff were exceptionally kind, warm, and welcoming from the moment we arrived, making us feel genuinely cared for throughout our stay. The breakfast buffet was one of the highlights—beautifully presented with an excellent selection and high-quality ingredients. That said, I did feel that our room did not justify the price of approximately €600 per night. While it was clean and comfortable, it was quite small and dark, and the balcony wasn’t a space where we found ourselves wanting to relax or spend time. Given the nightly rate, I had expected a room that felt more spacious, brighter, and offered a more enjoyable outdoor area. The hospitality of the team and the wonderful breakfast certainly left a positive impression, and with some room improvements, this could be an exceptional luxury experience.
Fantastic boutique hotel with lovely staff, accommodation, food and drinks and the swimming pools were amazing. I can see why it got so many good reviews. Close to the centre of Porto too!
Our group reserved three rooms at Torel Avantgarde, and unfortunately, our stay was extremely disappointing. Based on the hotel's reputation and Michelin Key recognition, we expected a luxury experience. Instead, it fell far short of those expectations. The only consistently positive aspect of our stay was the warm welcome and professionalism of the greeters at the entrance and the front desk staff. They were friendly, courteous, and made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, everything else was a disappointment. The floors in our rooms and the area rugs were visibly dirty, and the hotel overall appeared poorly maintained and disorganized. The bath towels were extremely rough and felt more like those found in a budget motel than in a luxury hotel. Our biggest disappointment was breakfast. The buffet selection was mediocre, and much of the food did not seem fresh. Each morning, we ordered freshly prepared eggs, but they consistently took 30 to 40 minutes to arrive. By the time they were served, we had already finished eating the buffet because the wait was simply too long. What made the experience even worse was the attitude of the breakfast staff. The gentleman overseeing the breakfast service, along with one of the female servers (whose name we unfortunately did not get), were rude when we politely asked for an update on our egg order. Their lack of professionalism and courtesy was unacceptable and completely inconsistent with the level of service expected at a luxury hotel. We simply do not understand how this hotel earned a Michelin Key. In our experience, it lacked the cleanliness, maintenance, food quality, and hospitality that such a distinction should represent. We left Porto very disappointed with our stay at Torel Avantgarde. We would not stay here again and cannot recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a true luxury hotel experience.
Fantastic experience from start to finish! Beautiful hotel, amazing staff - absolutely wonderful!
Great location, wonderful atmosphere, rooms were very nice as were the staff. We all loved the breakfast and the staff were so helpful. The bar was great for pre dinner drinks and the reception staff were extremely helpful in helping us book restaurants and excursions.
Amazing property in a great location! The staff was so accomodating and friendly with great local recommendations. The pool, spa, restaurant, and breaskfast buffet were such nice amentities to have on site. The only downside to this hotel was that the bed was stiff (which some people might like) and the bathroom is not totally closed off to the rest of the room. These rooms would be best shared by a couple or alone due to those reasons. My brother had to go downstairs to go to the bathroom a couple times if you know what I mean.
Very pleasant stay at Torel Avantgarde. Kind and well trained staff.
Location, style, rooms
Pool area could have been kept cleaner. When people left towels and glasses they were there for ages rather than being cleared away.
The design & staff. Bed & linen were exceptional. Pool and Pool bar were lovely if not a bit small. Breakfast was good.
My partner didn’t like the design of the bathroom. No web connectivity on the TV so you couldn’t get any or pay to view channels such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. The sound on the TV was very poor muffled by the surrounds. The hedge on the Infinity pool was too high and you couldn’t see the view - just needed to be trimmed.
Lovely staff & contemporary designed hotel. Clean & well thought out details. Shower slightly too small & a/c needs attention
A fantastic hotel with an excellent location and breathtaking views over the Douro River. The room was spotless, spacious, and very comfortable. The facilities are outstanding, including a beautiful panoramic pool, sauna, hammam, and a well-equipped gym. Everything was perfectly maintained, and the overall atmosphere was luxurious yet relaxing. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely come back. Highly recommended!
Amazing views of the city, quiet and tucked in but still walking distance to everything. Excellent service, really nice touches in the room. Loved the art aspects. Our massages and spa day was incredible!
Excellent staff, wonderful breakfast, clean room, comfortable bed, great facilities, excellent location.
Location and staff
Paid extra for an executive superior room but it was very small for such an expensive room. The advert for that type of room is very misleading as the pictures shown are actually the apartments from the building next door
Wow, love this hotel, my son and I stayed for just one night, while walking the Camino, we were booked for the sister hotel but it wasn’t operational so we’re transferred to the Torel Avatagarde. Loved the room, the staff were all so friendly and helpful, they went above and beyond to make our brief stay so unforgettable. Had dinner in the restaurant which was FAB and breakfast was amazing. Very clean, great views of Porto. Would highly recommend.
The staff were all amazingly helpful. The hotel was clean and we were able to ask questions via WhatsApp which made communicating easier. The views of the Duoro River were fantastic.
Wonderful boutique hotel. The Mozart room, #16, en suite, boasts the best soaking tub, overlooking the Duoro river and waterside restaurants and shop - perfect for morning coffee or evening wine/port after a full day of exploring. Don’t miss the extensive morning breakfast buffet, including to order eggs Benedict that a birdie tells me are incredible. The gym, indoor and outdoor pools, all excellent. The staff also stands out in their commitment to addressing any need.
We had a pleasant stay overall, and I would like to start by highlighting the positives. The staff were always friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. The hotel itself is beautiful, the breakfast was delicious, and the location is excellent. However, I do not believe the hotel currently lives up to its five-star rating for several reasons. First, the hotel advertises a 24/7 WhatsApp service where guests can contact staff with requests. Unfortunately, this did not work as intended. We never received replies to our messages and had no way of knowing whether they had even been seen. This made the service feel unreliable and unnecessary. Secondly, we had an early morning flight and were unable to attend the breakfast buffet because it only opened at 7:30 a.m., which is quite late in my opinion for a five-star hotel. The only alternative offered was a sweet or savoury snack box containing items such as protein bars. I find it disappointing that a five-star hotel could not prepare three simple breakfast plates just 30 minutes before the buffet opened. A more flexible solution would have made a significant difference. Another issue occurred during check-out. The hotel did not seem to have a clear overview of what we had already paid for (such as the beers and soft drinks in the room upon arrival) and what still needed to be charged. I would expect a five-star hotel to have better systems in place to manage guest accounts. Situations like this create unnecessary confusion and reduce trust. Finally, we ordered room service on our first evening. Unfortunately, around half of the menu, including all pizzas, was unavailable. We ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, a steak sandwich, a club sandwich, and an ice cream sandwich for dessert. All sandwiches came with fries, but the fries were cold, soggy, and clearly not freshly prepared. The sandwiches themselves were of very poor quality and lacked flavour. Considering that room service is an important part of the experience at a five-star hotel, we expected food that was enjoyable and of a much higher standard. It was, without question, the worst meal we had during our stay in Porto. Overall, this is a lovely hotel with kind and professional staff, and we would still recommend it because of its beautiful facilities and excellent location. However, there are several operational and service issues that need improvement. Addressing these would greatly enhance the guest experience and help the hotel truly meet the standards expected of a five-star property.
A stylish hotel base, with a cool & calming environment. Perfect for walking/exploring around the city. Great staff, fantastic cocktails.
The staff were amazing and couldn't do enough to help including when we had a slight issue with our final night stay where we had upgraded our room to a balcony room for the Saint John (Sao Joao) Festival. We stayed for 4 nights, had a few cocktails and breakfast there and it was always lovely. We also had a couple's back massage in the spa which was excellent, just the trick before flying home, and I used the gym which was adequate for what is a boutique hotel. All in, the hotel was lovely, the views amazing and the staff looked after us and were always friendly and helpful. Thanks Torel Avantgarde team for making our stay so lovely xxx
Great stay at the hotel. All the staff were very friendly, easy to talk to and helpful for information needed. Rooms were clean and always a chocolate waiting when the bed was turned down. Breakfast choice was great, although bread served with eggs benedict was stale tasting.
Our experience was wonderful from the moment we entered and were offered a glass of sparkling. Amazing vibrant architecture with contemporary colour scheme, each room is something special. It has everything to promote your health and wellbeing spa package, massage services and sauna. The staff are attentive and welcoming but discreet attending to your every need and following up the next day. As one would expect in such a high class boutique hotel, dining has amazing ambience and yet there are quiet areas such as the flower room to relax in. The location is perfect close enough to walk in the heart of Porto and near the Botanical Gardens, our room had a lush river view. A sitting area to relax in and television screens cleverly inset into mirrors completed the room, so different from the usual big screen dominated room.
Great location, great amenities, great bartenders. The Spa was a treat with talented masseuses. The rooms are spacious and well decorated.
We had an excellent stay at Torel Avantgarde. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The location is fantastic for the sights and restaurants.
Room was perfect, service too , spa réactive.
Great experience! The property is beautiful and the room was perfect. Every staff member we engaged with was delightful. My husband and I would absolutely stay here again in the future. The check in and check out process was pleasant.
Outstanding service as always. We always choose their hotels whenever we visit Portugal!
Zeer vriendelijk personeel

The hotel was truly stunning. Beautiful views over the Douro river & surrounding areas. Very well located close to the centre but in a quiet neighbourhood. So walkable and yet fast to get to the airport. Special mention to the wonderful staff. The team at the hotel were exceptional. So friendly, helpful & genuine, they made the stay incredible. We were so well looked after by Ines, Rosa-Maria & Maria to name a few but every member of staff was excellent & professional. They gave us great recommendations, took time to answer our questions and showed us just how hospitable & warm the Portugese people are. The facilities were great, the choice of heated and outdoor pools. The gym was really well equipped, spa facilities and outdoor pool beds were fantastic. The breakfast buffet every morning was gorgeous, we are still dreaming about it. If youre considering staying here, stop thinking and just book it!
Having to eventually leave!
It is very clean and a well sorted breakfast. IF traveling with children, please be advised there is no door on the bathroom area. The shower has a door but step out of shower and you are the general area. Little odd but staff was great and clean!!
The food was exceptional. The room lovely and comfortable with everything we wanted. Sadly due to hospitalisation we had to cut our stay very early. The staff really stepped up in an unusual situation and helped my wife which was wonderful . The facilities looked great, unfortunately we were unable to make use of them. We cannot fault this hotel and the staff who make it what it is. We would highly recommend.
The location for my wife, not being very mobile, was quite a walk for restaurants and shops.
We had a wonderful stay at the Torel Avantgarde in Porto. The staff went above and beyond in making sure we had everything we needed. They were so kind to our 1 year old grandson and made sure that our stay with him was stress free (including providing hot milk for his bottle in the evening!). The breakfast included cappuccinos and lattes made to order by the bar staff and made to order eggs and omelets as well as a selection of breads, fruits, cheese, cereals and more. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and the rooms were very clean. I highly recommend this hotel.
Our stay at the Avantgarde was exceptional. After reading so many glowing reviews before booking, our expectations were high—and the hotel exceeded them in every way. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome and went above and beyond to ensure a seamless stay, including arranging tours and transfers with ease. What truly stood out was the consistently outstanding service. Every team member we encountered—from the entrance staff and front desk to the bar and restaurant personnel—was friendly, engaging, professional, and attentive. Their genuine hospitality made us feel less like guests and more like we were at home. We would not hesitate to stay here again and highly recommend the Avantgarde to anyone visiting the area.
