Old coaching Inn in town centre with some parking. Comfortable, though rather small room /bathroom. Breakfast and evening meal both very good.
No instructions about Wifi password or using air con/heater in room.
Breakfast was great.freshly made and plenty to eat.
Everything was beautiful
Breakfast: splendid
Staff were very friendly, and the food was really good
Despite a sign in the bathroom warning about hot water, it was barely lukewarm.
Absolutely brilliant stay , highly recommend . From the staff to breakfast was 5 star .
Nothing
Location was excellent . Food , staff, cleanliness all v good . Our room (18) was rather compact but still nice .
I asked for a ground floor / first floor room but ended up on the second floor (26 stairs!) it was later explained ( when I asked) that only a second floor room had air con . Staff helped with luggage on arrival.
Good location. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely stylish room, with fabulous comfy bed & crisp white linen.
We requested rooms with air con, as it was a heatwave with temp 38 + The rooms did have air con which was really effective & most welcome. But unfortunately the air con unit was very noisy, so we were not able to sleep because of the noise of it. Also, while the rooms had recently been renovated to an exceptionally high standard, and were really lovely, the rest of the hotel looked a bit tired, so the overall experience didn’t feel quite consistent.
This was a gem of a place , I can honestly say that they do not come much better than this . The room was decorative and full of all the things you would need . The shower was brilliant , expensive soaps provided The food in the restaurant was really good breakfast menu was right up to date with healthy options . A complete satisfactory package
There was nothing i did not like .
Breakfast was good, no croissant available. Staff were excellent, at every point of contact smily, chatty and very helpful. A great asset to any hotel. I suspect it suggests very good management.
Air con over bed in bedroom 7 a bit noisy
Very friendly staff. We arrived late at night but they were very quick to answer any calls after hours, and made the check in very smooth. The hotel is a very nice old historic pub in the centre of Abingdon, the room was excellent, nicely decorated, spacious and clean. The breakfast was delicious too.
Beautiful characteristic building. Our room was very comfortable and spotless
Nothing. It is a wonderful hotel that We return to every year
Excellent location and great customer service Food was very good at breakfast as well as evening meal
Nothing
Bar and restaurant facilities were good. Availability of parking was good. The tea coffee options were good. Breakfast was excellent.
No heating in our room Noisy bathroom fan Bed comfort middling to poor. One room had a tiny shower room and a spacious bedroom the other was the reverse massive bathroom tiny bedroom with no view out.
Amazing staff smiling all the time nothing a bother even in extreme heat.
Fabulous breakfast served. Always nice to be left biscuits in the room along with the tea and coffee.
Véritable English breakfast bien servi, la bâtisse très ancienne a du caractère !
Il n’y a pas de frigo dans la chambre, en pleine période de canicule c’était malvenu, mais ce n’est pas si courant !
Excellent food :-)
Insufficiënt means to hangout wet towels. Unclear airco working instructions. To much light from fire-alarm device.
Perfect location, fine building, good restaurant, friendly staff
Breakfast was excellent, the staff helpful and friendly, location excellent, parking was good, dinner was good.
Our air conditioning/ heating didn't work so we had a fan heater. Our bathroom was very tight on space. Mum's bathroom was huge but cold.
Room was lovely, well equipped, appreciated bath and robes, linen and pillows comfortable, location good for Thames Path…staff were lovely in restaurant which was busy, food good.
Luggage not taken to room two flights up, uninviting reception, hallways tired and needed painting….traffic noise from lorries.
Great location, great breakfast
Nothing
Staff were very helpful and polite. Food was delicious, congrats to Chef Diogo. Our room was spotless and confy with beautiful decor.
Liked everything
Very comfortable. Exceptionally jolly and helpful staff. Great spaces in bar and restaurant. Music not too loud.

Great rooms, great food, great service
No complaints
Our stay at the Crown and Thistle was outstanding! All the staff were friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was luxurious and the food in their restaurant was delicious. Also, as we were part of a group of transgender women with our partners, we were pleased to see that the Crown and Thistle is part of the Ask Clive scheme which helps to make LGBTQIA+ people safer. All their staff treated our group members with the utmost respect and none of us were misgendered by them - which sadly, happens far too often these days. They made us all feel welcome, valued and valuable. We are already planning to return next year! Thank you so much to all the staff at the Crown and Thistle.
Nothing. It was perfect!
The staff were exceptionally helpful, in particular Sarah who took the dinner and breakfast orders for a group of 14 and ensured that all the orders went to the correct room numbers. Not any easy task handling 14 oldies :-))
Nothing
Fantastic staff, comfortable beds, great bathtub, lovely restaurant, good food.
Nothing
Location and period details. Lovely building.
Four poster bed was unstable and creaky. The shower temperature was difficult to control.. either cold or very hot. 3 teabags for 2 people.
Great location; stylish, comfortable rooms and facilities; good food
Missed a hotel sitting room
Good breakfast. Room good. Location excellent. Instructions to get to the Car Park could be explained better.
Instructions to get to Car Park.
Location on the Thames Path. Quality of food acceptable, friendly service.
Room 2 was very dark and dinghy with very poor lighting nowhere to sit and being on the front very noisy. We had breakfast quite late but everything except the undercooked eggs were obviously cooked we before orders were placed service however was good nice pleasant staff. We stayed with relatives for a family funeral having the funeral tea there in the barn in my opinion it was an embarrassing display of sandwiches on dry cheap bread with the tiniest amount of filling nd selection luke warm tea and coffee a very poor show. Overall not a good show however staff were good and attentive so the problems are with the way the place is run wouldn't stay again
Great facilities and location
Incredibly clean (even with cosy, deep carpet- whatever hoovers they use are amazing) , fantastic L’Occitaine products, great location. A brilliant breakfast, lots of tasty, high quality products.
Unfortunately the bed physically shook every time something bigger than a small car drove past which woke me up multiple times during the night. Not the noise of vehicles but the actual physical shaking of the bed when they went past. It got particularly bad at 5am when the traffic picked up. When I flagged this to staff they didn’t seem surprised. For £166 for one night, I expected to be able to sleep. May just be the room I stayed in (12) as other reviews are great.
Excellent breakfast, cooked to perfection!
full english breakfast was excellent and very quick despite a full restaurant. Very handy for the river walk and they happilly organised lunch for a dozen of my friends. Best place to stay in or around Abingdon
nice to have a car park in the centre of town but very tight spaces and not easy to find
Nice sized room with lots of period features. Good shower and very comfortable bed. Nice complimentary coffee and water. Staff are lovely. There were lots of breakfast options and the meals in the restaurant were tasty.
Two minor things in the room. It would be nice if there was a table and two comfy chairs. Secondly, a chest of drawers would be useful.
Room and location
Shower great but water for bath not hot enough. They are aware and fixing
Overnight stay, nice room, friendly hemel staff, good food.
Very comfortable and well appointed room, a fantastic night's sleep. The staff were friendly. The food was excellent, and the service was prompt and friendly.
The hot water took a long time to come, if at all. In the morning it was just lukewarm after running for 5 minutes.
Great food, has its own pizza oven and they are very good, breakfast is also good, plenty of choice. Room choice can sometimes be pot luck, ie small or large.
If you get a room on an upper floor then the stairs can be a little tricky with a larger case. However its an old building and a little quirky, so although it can be tricky with the stairs beds are comfy, rooms good (size depending) and it does not put me off booking again as I have done many times.
Staff were welcoming, pleasant and helpful. Smooth reception and checking out. Restaurant staff friendly and swift. Good choice of dinner menu and food was excellent Bedroom has charm and very comfotable bed. Hotel has lots of character, olde worlde charm - and some of the issues which go with that
Lighting in room was poor - lots of side lights and table/standard lamps but overall it was very dark. Hot water in the evening was barely tepid - and took ages to arrive. Morning it seemed better, but temperature of shower was still warm rather than hot. Tea/coffee provided - but some bottled water would be good. Morning breakfast menu is too eleaborate.- and over-priced. Only cereal available is over-rich granola/yoghurt concoction.
Fantastic place to stay ,location, rooms service food all excellent The rooms are outstanding and I highly recommend the breakfast 👌 Looking forward for my next visit
Location was great with car parking. Staff very friendly and food of excellent quality.
Front bedrooms by road noisy. Some tlc required for old hanging baskets still on display. Bed creaky but comfortable!
Hotel would have been excellent apart from fault in shower. Restaurant food was excellent
A working shower would have improved the room. Unable to alter water temperature from scalding to tolerable, or indeed anything! Taps stuck. Reported to reception on 27/2 but nothing done about it.
Nice location, comfortable bed, good selection of toiletries and condiments in the room. Breakfast was very good.
Bar could have stayed open later.
Excellent breakfast
TV didn't work on second night but staff did try to help
Cozy

I went with twenty one others to a Christmas Party at the Crown and Thistle in December 2025. As I have food intolerances I spent 45 minutes in a three way telephone conversation with the chef and an employee. The camembert starter would be prepared specially for me and I had a medium rare steak with chunky chips and plain rocket and sliced tomato, no sauces and no dressings. When the waiting staff came I twice refused the normal camembert starter informing them that the chef was preparing one specially as I had intolerances. Then my steak came out, with ONION RINGS on it. I said that this could not be mine as I am intolerant to onion. The second attempt came out with peppercorn sauce which contains GARLIC. The waiter apologised and I explained I could not eat onion or garlic and I had specifically preorganised with the chef what I could eat. Finally, when most of the others had finished my main came out. I felt embarrassed to be eating and holding everyone up from their desert. A waiting staff member kept popping their head around the side of the bar to see if I had finished which made me feel quite uncomfortable. Although the food I ate in the end was good, the evening had been spoilt. I contacted the manager of Crown and Thistle on two occasions since and allowed time because of the Christmas season, but I have not received the courtesy of a reply.
The room was excellent, clean and comfortable, the staff where polite and there for you if you needed anything
Nothing
Everything. The staff are always so friendly and wonderful, polite, kind and helpful, the perfect way to start a stay here. The honeymoon suite was incredible. The bed was so comfortable and I slept a full 8 hours with no interruptions even with the road outside. The rolltop bath is the best feature however, I nearly lost myself in it. The water was lovely and hot and it was just a level of indulgence you dream of. Breakfast was exceptional, and the range of ways the eggs are cooked is superb! The smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough toast with extra hash browns were delicious! But I imagine if you order anything off the breakfast menu it will meet, or exceed your expectations.
Nothing.
Clean, comfortable and lovely breakfast
Found the room to be dark, extra lighting would have been helpful when preparing to go to an occasion.
We stayed overnight with breakfast next morning. After meeting up with family we all returned same day for a Sunday Roost. We had a wonderful stay in the heart of Abingdon. The bed was comfy & big, and we slept really well, no noise or light issues. The buildings are full of old world charm and so interesting. The food was really well presented and tasted great with plenty of choice. We were served by Isla who was lovely, but we were really impressed by all the staff there, they were all helpful and genuinely friendly. We were VERY impressed. We hope to stay again in the future.
Our evening meal was superb.
Sadly, the staff were not as attentive as our past visits.
Breakfast was good.
Air conditioning compressor right outside Room 8's window so on the hottest day had to sleep with windows SHUT because if noise!!!
Location was excellent for the outdoor pool and the town. Good breakfast and the coffee was really good. Waitstaff were very good .
Scruffy reception area, frayed carpets throughout the passageways , internal paintwork needs freshening, car parking a bit clunky.Although once established it was good
Beautiful room, comfortable bed and lovely sheets and duvet. gorgeous bath
Ufortunately our room was directly over the restaurant and the music was turned on at 5am, the noise woke us up and we couldnt sleep because of it.
Breakfast excellent
Room very small and cramped also very dark no ceiling light only lamps little space for toiletries no drawers for clothes, hung up as much as possible but had to leave clothes in suitcase, heavy condensation on both room and bathroom windows, no safety mat for the bath ( shower over bath) had to use a hand towel. On arriving back before 10pm one evening pub closed early so not able to have a nightcap
Beautiful with a great sense of history. Loved the sloping floors and the 4 poster bed. Very handy in the middle of the town near shops and plenty of great food options.
Nothing - it was great.
Lovely meal with family - lovely helpful staff good food but cold and no fires on - in either side of hotel, which was a shame
Room was dark and dated. Shower was great but bathroom was cold.
Dingy and dated.
Lovely staff and great place to visit
Beautiful old coaching inn full of character

Our room was an executive double. Super individual , large and very comfortable, with a lovely freestanding bath in the bathroom and a great separate shower. Quality toiletries Bed was super comfy, lots of storage and complimentary water and tea tray. Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice and great quality.
There was nothing we didn’t like 🥰
People were friendly, rooms comfortable and clean, toiletries and dressing gowns nice. Towels were lovely (important). Breakfast was good and tea/coffee in the room good
The mattress was old The room was extremely dark even with all the lights on The aircon was really loud The windows didn't open The bar during the day was very unwelcoming (other bar not open)
Very welcoming and friendly staff, comfortable bed, nice range of toiletries
Carpets in bedroom and corridor area's need attention, heating/ air-conditioning unit was very noisy
Everything
No complaints
The room was charmingly decorated The stair case carpet needs replacing - it presents such a different image to the quality of the decor in the rooms
Great location, friendly and helpful staff. Room clean and comfortable with all required amenities. When eating in the restaurant the food was of high standard, and well presented.
The bed was very comfortable, the room was clean, the restaurant very good for both the evening meal and breakfast.
First impression wasn't great - holes in the carpet between reception and my room. This is a hotel that could be really good, but things like that let down the image. Also my room was noisy - it sounded like I must have been near an extractor fan from the kitchen, whatever it was ran all through the night.
The location is excellent, parking is convenient, and the breakfast selection is plentiful and delicious.
The only drawbacks are the lack of an elevator and the winding stairwells, requiring considerable strength and skill to move luggage.
Everything was tiptop 100%plus, we will be back.
Cant think of anything.
Room very nice large coffee machine good toiletries comfortable bed, good choice at breakfast, could have anything off breakfast menu , free car park staff lovely
Room a bit dark my husband had difficulty getting into the shower food at breakfast not very hot
Breakfast pretty good option of a few cereals?
Stayed here before in a standard room which was on the small side. Superior was bigger but I thought the standard was better. This hotel is okay but is getting a bit tired. No fridge only sparkling water. Decor dull.
Staff was all exceptionally kind and helpful and worked very hard. Nothing was too much trouble. Rooms and toiletries provided exceeded our expectations. Beds was very comfortable and breakfast option even had gluten free options and staff was knowledgeable about options available. We felt a very warm welcome and extremely well looked after and relaxed.
Nothing.
The room was well presented and had a comfy bed, tea and coffee selection was great, breakfast was excellent, as was the rest of food range and choice. Overall it was very good stay.
Nothing really.
A pub, a hotel and a restaurant - separate yet all in one.
