The location was convenient, close to everything Water Street had to offer.
The on-site cafe closed before dinner. There wasn't anywhere to get a good coffee or snack after.
Location and staff is good
Had to change room because of noise Elevators can’t handle volume Rooms too small for pricing
Tout était impeccable
Didn't eat there, coffee was good. Beds were excellent.
Room was small

The staff and the pet friendly atmosphere
It was pricey for the size of the room
Clean, comfortable beds and the view of the harbour was beautiful! The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
The chair by the window was not very comfortable.
New hotel, well designed and GREAT central location. Helpful staff.
Comfortable rooms with "fresh" decor. The room automation provides ease of operation.
The hotel offers parking for a fee. However, the hotel cannot accommodate the amount of parking necessary. Moreover, the parking is shared with dinning room guests which exacerbates the issue and the hotel does not have a "solution" for this issue. In short, not enough parking and no alternative parking locations.
Very Modern Hotel, friendly staff and clean comfortable room. Hôtel has a restaurant and other restaurants are close by.
We could not use parking garage due to driving a truck. Spaces for larger vehicles are first come first serve. I don’t know what we would have done if there was no parking for us. Breakfast is not included.

Great location, stylish decor & extremely friendly staff.

Location was excellent. Everything was within walking distance. Our room has the view of the harbour and signal hill/cabot tower. The room was clean and big with high ceiling and even the washroom was spacious compared to other hotels.
Panoramic room with harbour view was very neat. I loved the waterfall shower and the puffin wall art. Walking distance to all the downtown area and complimentary parking made site seeing easy/enjoyable.
The water does not taste great in the city in general. Bottled water in the room would have been nice. They do this in Texas when you check-in (2 bottles of water) and it’s appreciated for brushing teeth or making morning tea/coffee.
Very clean, good location, friendly staff, modern bathroom.
No fridge & parking for a large truck was a bit tricky, none available at the hotel.
Everything!
Super
The attention to detail in the design of the room. Excellent food at the Terre restaurant and the T Cafe. Outdoor seating and gardens.
Would like a restaurant to have a sit down served lunch.
Highly recommended. Great spot, great staff, great room! Many of the tour buses stop outside the hotel, so it’s convenient for day tours, plus it’s easy walking distance to most of St John’s tourist drawcards.
Great location. Staff were fantastic
Love the view of the harbour. Friendly staff. Nice cafe in the lobby. Great location
Location, clean & modern design, staff
Location to walking to most sights & harbour views
Kind es and efficiency of the people at the desk stop
Breakfast can be improved
Nous sommes arrivés très tard dans la nuit mais l'enregistrement s'est fait très rapidement. Chambre propre et agréable ainsi que le reste de l'hôtel. Très bon emplacement au centre-ville. Rien à redire.
Nothing but a positive experience! When we arrived we discovered that our clothes were soaking wet as Air Canada left our luggage on the tarmac in the pouring rain during our 3 hour delay in Toronto. After hearing of our unfortunate event one of the Alt Hotel managers collected our soaking wet clothes and used the hotel’s industrial dryer. She delivered our newly dried clothes right to our room. All of this was at no extra charge. In addition to the incredible staff, the location was perfect…. Walking distance to the heart of the city and right on the water. The outdoor patio area was fantastic. Beautiful view of the water! The room, although not huge, was thoughtfully laid out so you never felt it was too small. My husband and I have very different mattress needs and the we both thought the bed was very comfortable! The walk in shower was easy to maneuver. All in all a great hotel!!
A Wonderful Stay at Alt Hotel St. John’s We had a wonderful stay at the Alt Hotel, which is conveniently situated on Water Street, the main thoroughfare through St. John’s. The location is excellent, making it easy to explore the city and enjoy everything it has to offer. The staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful, and genuinely couldn’t do enough for us. One small point worth mentioning is that there isn’t a kettle provided in the room, but this was easily resolved — we simply asked at reception and one was supplied without any fuss. The bed and pillows deserve a special mention. They were quite simply the most comfortable I have ever experienced in a hotel, resulting in some of the best nights’ sleep we’ve ever had while travelling! Breakfast was another highlight on the days when the restaurant was open. Everything was freshly cooked, with an ample choice on the menu, and it was a lovely way to start the day. One thing we hadn’t realised, however, was that the restaurant is closed for breakfast on Mondays and Tuesdays. We weren’t aware of this when we arrived, although I’m sure the information was included somewhere in the hotel literature and we simply hadn’t picked up on it. On these two days, breakfast is instead available from the coffee shop. The coffee there is excellent, and they offer a tempting selection of sandwiches and pastries. Unfortunately, these items sell out very quickly, and by the time we arrived there was very little choice left apart from frittata, which wasn’t particularly enjoyable. We also felt that the coffee shop experience was rather different from that of the hotel itself. It didn’t appear to be operated directly by the hotel, and the level of customer service wasn’t quite what we had experienced from the exceptionally friendly and attentive hotel staff. Perhaps a little more information for guests about the alternative breakfast arrangements, together with ensuring sufficient choice throughout the morning, would make this a much better experience. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Alt Hotel. It is comfortable, welcoming and in a fantastic location, with wonderful staff who really do make you feel looked after. The exceptionally comfortable bed was an added bonus! We would happily stay here again and would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone visiting St. John’s.
A good hotel, nothing special about it. Kind service, clean, complete. To be improved: fully closed and airco managed, And breakfast at 07.00 should be ready for the customers, not starting to open. And no bar. Locates good, walking distance from down town.
Emplacement de choix , excellent café a l’intérieur de l’hotel.
Central location. Has underground parking. Clean, well laid out rooms.
The rooms were a bit too sophisticated in their controls. There were several panels with control buttons. Some were obvious like blinds, but the lighting control was difficult to understand and two of the lights came on early in the morning for no apparent reason.
Clean, modern, amazing view, having a control panel for the lights, thermostat, and blinds right by the bed, do not disturb/please make up room lights on the room number signs, and we were surprised with a little card with a note and chocolates and a free room upgrade as we were celebrating our engagement!
No bathroom fan
For our stay at Alt Hotel St John's, we chose a panoramic view room - which was perfect. Though the rooms may be compact, I have never stayed at a hotel where the rooms were so thoughtfully designed. These thoughtful design features ensured that the room felt much larger than the square footage. Terre Restaurant, at the hotel, is fantastic. I had the best entree that I have ever had while dining there.
Very nice hotel in a good location. Clean rooms and wonderful staff. The restaurant menu was a little odd and quite expensive. We got the city view room but the Water View would have been better as the traffic noise from the former is discerning. I would stay here again.
The hotel was fantastic in it's communication leading up to the trip!! The service was exceptional once there and continued at that level our entire stay!! It was wonderful to see how pet friendly it is. I will return with my husband and dog. The location was perfect to walk and see the sights!! Also, many tours had a pick up location at that hotel. The restaurant Terre was amazing as was the Terre Cafe!! Would highly recommend this hotel as a stay in St. John's!!!
Nothing at all comes to mind.
Terre restaurant was the redeeming point
Size of rooms was 2 small for 2 double beds and bathroom was a disaster
Your coffee cups in the room are too small for the coffee. It overflowed onto the table.
Location is good but a little noisy if you're in a Water St facing room (people in St. John's seem to like gunning motor cycles along there). Room was spotless. Very high tech - a panel that controls everything. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Parking is $20 for 24 hours with in and out privileges (and parking is hard to find in downtown St. John's). Coffee shop in the lobby is good too.
There is a panel by the bed that has a night light build in which was very annoying as there didn't seem to be any way to turn it off. A bit on the pricey side.
Staff was amazing! I had such great interactions with everyone at the front desk. Location is ideal.
Nothing major, but there were some scuffs here and there in the room and the carpet had a large tear.
I believe the card controls for the lighting and elevators are retrograde. i.e. there is an indication that this hotel is eco friendly from reduced energy consumption because of the card controls when this may not be the case at all. The card controls mean that you need to fumble for your card to operate the elevators. And in the rooms the switches that operate the lights require 4 to 5 seconds of continuous pressing to activate. It is so inconvenient that we left some of the lights on while sleeping because we did not have the patience to turn them off. The coffee shop closes at 5;00 pm which is when we went down to order sandwiches.
Staff was superb! Room was clean and parkhouse safe
A little bit too expensiv
Great location, very clean, friendly staff, great rooms!
We had a lovely 2 night stay at this very modern hotel. The reception staff who greeted us were very welcoming and friendly. The parking garage was a little tight getting in and out but was fine. Our room , whilst not the biggest was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for a pleasant stay. We had a partial view of the harbour which was nice. We didn’t have any noise problems as other people have said. The hotel is ideally located for both Water Street and George Street. Getting to Signal Hill from here is straight forward too. The War memorial is a short walk away. The pubs and restaurants around here have everything you could want and lots of choice. Most of the pubs have nightly entertainment so it’s a great place to stay. We would stay here again and highly recommend it.
Location
Parking
We found the queen size bed small.
Great hotel. Highly recommend. Staff are super helpful. Location is awesome- close to harbour views, Water St restaurants, George St bars and music, and a primary pickup point for tours. Rooms are spacious and well stocked
Stayed two nights at the ALT Hotel in St. John’s. A very central location close to the hustle and bustle provides walking distance to downtown points of interest, but at a cost of outside noise and disturbances at night (suggest room not facing streetfront to mitigate). The hotel is modern, furnished well and has helpful amenities, but due to space being at a high premium, rooms are small and parkade is very challenging to navigate (note added cost of parking required). Overall a reasonable value, provided visitors understand there are unavoidable challenges and irritants as a consequence of the property location. Please indicate if you found this review to be helpful so I know where to focus future review efforts. Pros: + close proximity to attractions, shops and restaurants nearby + modern hotel with neat room amenities including smart controls w/shade and lighting, above average quality coffee + good usage of space, lobby area a plus with seating and billiards, water filling station Cons: - irritating outside sleep disturbances during weekend stay (intoxicated/noisy people, loud vehicles) - elevators/parkade very difficult to maneuver due to size, tightness of stalls - smaller room, inconsistent shower pressure observed, towels could be more plush, second floor streetfront rooms provides poor views of awning
Great location, lovely staff.
Very modern facilities.
The on site restaurant was closed Sunday evening and Monday and Tuesday so we were unable to dine in the hotel during our stay there.
What an amazing, well thought out hotel. The staff are the friendliest and most helpful I’ve ever experienced- really something special, above and beyond. Allowed an extended checkout with parking and a thorough walk through the innovative amenities - nespresso, charging stations, lit mirrors, adapted luggage trolleys, QR codes for everything, chrome cast and more. I will be staying with le Germaine hotels from now on
Ausgezeichnete Lage.
We liked this hotel very much. It is in a good location near the water, and at the start of the long line of restaurants and unique shops. Our room was modern and clean and a little tight. The hotel has parking within the building. If you have a large SUV, you will might the entry and spaces to be narrow. The restaurant in the hotel is highly rated, but we did not eat there only because we wanted to walk around in the area. You'll need a reservation to find seating in the majority of the nearby restaurants. We ate at the Grotto, Oliver's, and the Duke of Duckworth. Each was good and the Duke was lowered rice and pub-like. They were within easy walking distance. The front desk staff was tremendous--friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of the area. A hop-on/hop stand that also offers a walking tour is positioned during the day in front of the hotel.
A very modern, clean and comfortable room. Loved the blinds which were automatic and the puffin glass between the shower and the bedroom. Staff were amazing, friendly and very accommodating. The café was fabulous in the lobby. Check out was at 12 noon, lovely to have that extra bit of time. The parking allowed us to leave the car in the underground garage safely with all our luggage for the whole of our last day which really helped.
To be picky, the toilet was very low for an older person. We would have liked a fridge in the room and the desk and chair could have been removed for more space. We mentioned the fridge to someone working there and she said one could be sent to the room but we did not bother in the end. It was good to know we could have done this though. Parking is a bit pricey especially as we stayed in a different hotel with free parking at the beginning of our stay.
Staff were very helpful and the restaurant recommended was excellent. Location suited us well
Dirty windows Over priced food. Nowhere else in five weeks has charged us for a second cup of coffee. Quite noisy from traffic Signage in basement car park was nonexistent and we had difficulty both on arrival and departure
Had parking, good location, very clean and had everything we needed. Staff always friendly and helpful.
Nothing
Location was good and rooms were clean.
Road noise on Saturday night.
The location was perfect! We loved the rooms and the view was super cool!
A bit on the pricy side for what it is.
Location and Joan at the front desk who was so helpful and knowledgeable and a smile for everyone who passed in the lobby- watching the ships come in the harbour from our room were wonderful sights each day
Excellent hotel in downtown, close to everything. Great views over the port, with comfortable, well lit rooms with blackout blinds. Restaurant or lobby cafe for breakfast, both good.
Kettle available at reception unless your happy with a Clooney-machine! Lifts a bit slow to arrive!
I didn’t have breakfast at the hotel - only coffee. I liked the location and I liked how simple but sophisticated the rooms are. I also liked the security for the elevators and within the room. Loved the control panel!
Dummy instructions for the heat in the shower would have been helpful - I just stumbled on how to get the hot water on.
We stayed here for five nights at the start of an almost three-week trip touring Newfoundland. We were originally due to stay for four nights but our flights got changed so we had to tag on another night. The hotel was nice and modern and the reception staff were pleasant and helpful. We had a city view room which could be a little noisy at times with traffic but overall, this didn’t bother us too much. The bed was comfortable and bathroom well laid out with a small bench too. The puffin on the glass wall was a cute touch. The room had a coffee maker but as we weren’t coffee drinkers we requested a kettle. We also requested a small fridge which was super helpful. We didn’t eat at the hotel so can’t comment on the hotel restaurant. We had a couple of good breakfasts at the Bagel Café though - a two-minute walk away. We found the location of the hotel worked well for us. With a short walk to main tourist areas on Water Street and to the harbour (to catch a whale watching boat tour). The hotel was also well placed for walking up Signal Hill.
Location and view of the harbour
On site Restaurant was closed on our arrival, there were very limited options for breakfast on Tuesday. Poor range of items at the desk for those coming in to the hotel later in the evening.
Amazing service, great reception, clean interior. Great help for tourism. Overall amazing!
La vue sur le port
Room was very comfortable. Staff were vey friendly and helpful. Location was perfect.
Nothing.
It was very comfortable. Nice room, good coffee maker. Excellent 24 hour service desk - some staff very kind and helpful (nothing actually wrong with the others!). Clean, efficient.
Breakfast queue was very long on several days - very slow service
Man konnte fast alles vom Bett aus bedienen. Die Beleuchtung im Badezimmer war der Hammer.
Das Preis- Leistungsverhältnis war einfach schlecht. Die Sauberkeit im Zimmer war mangelhaft.
Staggering amzing!
Parking
I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Alt Hotel St John's NFLD, May 15th for 2 nights. Room 428 was the base of operations. The room had what is called a panoramic view and offered a spectacular view of not only the harbor but, weather permitting, Signal Hill. The Alt is right on the water front: any closer and you'd be in the water. While there are other properties offering a harbor view room, this usually comes with other buildings in the way. The hotel offers a restaurant but be sure to get there before 10 pm as he kitchen closes at that time. There is a coffee shop close to the check in counter. If its sunny, have your coffee on the patio. Pubs and restaurants are nearby as is George Street, about a 15 min walk away. The rooms at the Alt tend to be somewhat tight but just how much do you spend in your room when you should be out exploring. Cape Spear, the furthest most point in North America is a quick 15 minutes away. This was my first time touring Newfoundland and was gobsmacked by the raw beauty. I plan to come back again and will definately stay at the Alt.
Never stayed at an Alt Hotel before. Honestly, was impressed with the care taken with the design and amenities. I like the built-in tech as I often need to work even when on vacation (as I did this time). Little things like benches and lots of counters in the bathroom and the nightlights on sensors were great little touches. The food at Terre and the coffee were also better than expected and actually better value than some of the local restaurants which was surprising given the calibre of food and service
This is my first time in St. John's and frankly there wasn't that much to do nearby, especially when it was drizzly and foggy. We had to dig around to find something to do. The front desk tried to help but many of the suggestions were more suitable to younger guests. I had my parents with me so pub nights weren't suitable. And going back to nightlights on sensors. In retrospect, they were too bright and we couldn't figure out how to dim them as they would brighten every time somebody was too close to the edge of the bed.
Great stay. Nice hotel with very engaged staff. Good location
Ideal location downtown - staff very helpful
N/A
Sehr freundliche Mitarbeiter, sehr gutes Frühstück und Restaurant
Modern room, comfortable bed, very close and walkable to downtown locations. Staff all very friendly.
Room a bit on the smaller side.
Great hotel, great harbour view from our room, luxurious feeling, clean, eye for detail, friendly and helpful staff. Pleasure to stay here.
Very clean and modern. Very friendly staff
Cleanliness, facilities
Nothing
The view is exceptional and the bed was extremely comfortable. It was lovely sitting with a coffee watching the view in the morning.
The cafe downstairs ran out of breakfast stuff quickly and the service was slow. There was a broken panel with exposed wires in the bedroom.
It was fine - comfortable enough, but expensive for what you get.
Style over substance: touch screen smart panels that are annoying to operate; modernist decor but fewer amenities (no kettle or tea in the rooms, no water bottles); not the best facilities (lots of light coming through edges of blackout curtain; something outside banging against the window loudly throughout the windy night; a king sized headboard & bedside table frame but with a queen bed in it so one of the bedside tables was a foot away from the side of the bed, etc.)
Views where breath taking
Carpets in room and hallways...mild odors and make it look lil dated.
Alt Hotel was a spectacular stay. Fast check-in, modern hotel, great communication, very clean, and excellent service. Reasonable underground parking at $13 per day, and it’s centrally located so you can easily walk to all the pubs and restaurants, although they also have a great coffee shop in the lobby. We upgraded to a waterfront view, which was nice for watching the ships come in and out. The layout of the harbor means the hotels are set back from the dock, so while it’s a harbor view and not right on the water, the views are still very good. Would definitely stay there again when in St. John’s.
Property was clean, well situated, and had required items. I like a room with a kettle for tea, and they had kettles at the front desk. The staff were very friendly. The service was good. The coffee shop had excellent coffee.
The room has these modern panels that control everything (blinds, lights, temperature etc) tha I found difficult to navigate at times- I probably prefer a few off and on switches.
Very nice hotel, with contemporary design, excellent location and very friendly staff.
nothing to mention!
You will not be disappointed. Good location downtown. Rooms are beautiful and I would suggest the harbour view rooms. Great price. Very clean, beds extremenly comfortable . During my stay, I did not hear anything. Felt very welcome by all the staff. ALT hotels belong to the Germain Group, a family owned company based in Quebec City and they have hotels throughout Canada, and I can assure you will get the same welcome throughout their other locations in Canada.
Wry clean and quaint
Good location
Never knew there was a breakfast. Tried to make a coffee in room, I mean what happened to coffee pots and at least having a stir stick to stir said coffee would have been great.
Very friendly staff
No complaints
The bed was comfortable.
The water in the shower stayed at the bottom of my feet. So it was clogged, that was pretty gross
Cleanliness, friendliness of front desk staff
More variety for snacks to purchase in the lobby.
Staff were great
I wish the parking was a bit easier
Very comfortable bed
All was fine
I loved the view, the room was comfortable and clean.
The fact that I went in my truck limited my parking options and therefore had an impact on what I could do. I limited myself to walking distance from the hotel in fear of losing my parking spot.
