Friendly pub, fantastic breakfast!
Room slightly dated
Good location
Tiny room While building needs substantial refurbishment , cracked windows, cold rooms, dirty carpets . Breakfast options good in theory, but poor realisation. This was the worst french toast I’ve ever had .
Warm welcome and fantastic food , great location away from it all , my dogs loved it!!9_
Could do with a blind in the bathroom
The dinner and breakfast was exceptional.
The hotel is suffering a bit from faded glory. Not refurbished or updated. But is was on our c2c route.
Location excellent. Food and drink no issues.
Very shabby. Broken TV in two of our 3 rooms. No curtains. Broken windows, holes in walls/ceiling. In major need of updating.
Staff very helpful. Room clean and comfortable. Breakfast superb.
Noise from people in the bar travelled up to my room, but did stop around 10:30-11pm
Settung idyllic
Bedrooms need tlc skieting boards fresh paint ,stsins up wall cleaning ,small stain in bed linen , need some new covers in seatung to jolly it up and carpets cleanjng ,no hot water for a bath so had a cold one ,also really polite service at breakfast but staff on later had different attitude ,need cystimer care training or a boss in sute
Dinner was nice
Room felt tired - paid same per night for a first class facility in a pod
Very rustic
Nothing
Prima gelegen aan de wandelroute. Aardig personeel. Ruime kamer. Goed ontbijt
De vloerbedekking was niet erg schoon. De badkamer kon ook beter.
All the staff are so friendly and helpful we felt at home and welcome immediately. I was especially pleased that they agreed to do us a special early breakfast so we could catch the early train to Whitby. Amazing beer garden, simple but excellent food. Our room had a good shower, with good toiletries and hairdryer. The hotel wasn't immaculate like a premier Inn or chain hotel but more than made up for that with it's homely atmosphere.
Excellent food, poor evening service but good at breakfast. The relatively new owner is lovely and well aware of the improvements to the building that are needed. Lovely towels and sheets but room needs redecorating. Gorgeous location.
The public areas like the bar and entrance and stairs are shabby but it's a massive task which the owner is undertaking bit by bit. I wish her well, she has a great enthusiasm for the beautiful building she had taken on.
Very friendly staff and cosy room. The breakfast included was what we needed in the morning.
There were crumbs on my pillow and there was a weird smell. It would be good to have in the facilities that there is a dvd player.
Plenty of tea and coffee.
The place was dingy and filthy, so bad that we didn't stay for breakfast which was included in the price. Why we were charged £118 is a mystery. When we arrived we had ro clear the room of 4 moths, 3 flies and a bluebottle, there were cobwebs ful of flies in every corner and the electrics looked dangerous. So very disappointed and disappointed in Booking.com who I use regularly. The photos look nothing like the hotel, inside our out so I feel totally mislead by Booking.com. I will rethink using them in the future.
The location was lovely, and the wake-up call from the local cockerals made our stay.
We went to stay at The Horseshoe Hotel for bed and breakfast. As we got stuck in a traffic jam, it took us hours to get there. When we checked in about 3 p.m., the barman said they were no longer serving food. We explained that we'd eaten nothing since 7am, which was then 8 hours. He said there was another hotel further down if we wanted food. There was no offer of a quick snack .Since we were paying guests, we expected more customer service to accommodate our needs. There were no vegan options written on the evening menu, even though we let the hotel know well in advance that we were vegans. Disappointing. We didn't stay for breakfast as we just wanted to get out of there. The tv in the room just stood on a cabinet with the refreshment tray covering the screen. The room was too warm with no fan. Would not go there again.
Food was good and the room was comfortable. We ate in the hotel on 2 evenings. and found the food to be better than the other local hotel we tried. It was perhaps unfortunate that the dinner menu did not go up until late in the day and a number of items were off the menu when we sat down to eat. Having said that, it would have been good not to have chips with everything. The hotel was also very happy for us to have our dog with us throughout the hotel. The staff were very keen to help and we found them to be friendly and effective
There needed to be better attention to detail. We had to ask for our 2 rooms to be serviced on 2 days. When we returned from our days out nothing had been prepared in the rooms. The hotel is clearly in a state of refurbishment and we were content with that, but some cleaning would have made a difference. For instance the front door needed a coat of paint and the doorstep in to the hotel was not swept. The bushes at the door needed pruned to avoid seed heads catching clothes
The staff were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. They are the main asset of this rather run-down little pub that has not seen a lick of paint since the 1970s. The food was also exceptionally good. If you don't mind staying in a place that is starting to look tired and old-fashioned (by which I don't mean quaint and old-worldly), then it's fine.
It is grossly over-expensive for what it is, the exception being the food which is fairly priced and of a high standard.
Lovely and friendly staff, we met Pumi, an incredible nice host and served us an amazing breakfast!
The staff were great and the breakfast good and ample.
The whole place generally speaking needs updating, the decor and carpets need renewing. However, that doesn't mean it's unclean just needs a revamp.
Staff were excellent and food was really good
Only downside was that room smelt like a dog had been in there
Great location for the coast to coast Lady serving breakfast was warm and welcoming Bedding was clean and towels Good shower power
That the bedrooms just need a good clean, even if the rest is part of the “character, charm or wear and tear”.
Lovely pub in a quiet, peaceful area. Good food and cask alea. Friendly staff
On the Coast to Coast hike, the location was perfect. Arrival day coincided with locals on a pub crawl, interesting to observe. Quiet nice, great pub and the breakfast. Will recommend and may stay again on a future trip. Nice meeting new owners too.
Food was very good
It was an old building and needed some refurbishing. But bedrooms were ok
Beautiful location, middle of North York moors, lovely setting for pub itself. Food very nice, evening meal and breakfast, good quality . Friendly staff. Bedding clean
Very poor state of room. Pub is slowly being refurbished but twin room we were put in was in state of disrepair and poor decor. Could easily be upgraded with lick of paint and a bit of attention to detail such a new cushions and light shades and mould remover then paint job in bathroom. Bathroom had new shower but sink was cracked and mildew on the high walls and water damage with peeling paint to skirting board. Cushions old and ripped , curtains hanging off hooks. Had to ask for bedside lamp.
The hosts were delightful. It's a beautiful property in a lovely old building. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent.
Quite location. Staff very friendly
Food was excellent and great staff. Loved the location, right next to the stepping stones. Good place to stay. Also accommodated an earlier breakfast.
Nothing. Its a old building in need of a bit of tlc, but its got character and is clearly getting there.
The breakfast
Whole place is tired and dirty. Told I couldn't order for for an hour, ordered food an hour later and I ended up cancelling it an hour later as it still hadn't arrived. 2 hours and no food for a table of 1 is ridiculous. Bathroom radiator constantly on and its 25 degrees and summer
Breakfast was horrible as sorry no events it was burnt scrambled egg watery not nice who ever cooking cannot cook tomatoes and sausages where burnt we had ask about a fan no one brought one up and also had problems with the telly and again no one came to fix it
Breakfast let down there no air conditioning only window a wood Holden up window
Good
Kettle was faulty to hot to handle once boiled
Old country pub with tidy accommodation
We were lucky to have a breeze come in the window on a warmt night.
Food was amazing, great chef!
Nothing
The level of cleanliness was hard to believe. I had paid but would not stay in a place as dirty as this.
breakfast was fine
Room was very old and worn. Cock crowed at 3am for half an hour, not much they can do about that though - it is the country! Dinner wasn't to my liking, a massive carb fest and largely tasteless, but others would like that sort of thing.
Location
Limited menu choice
Beautiful setting, quiet atmosphere.
All good!
Quaint and lovely hotel located right along the Coast to Coast trail. Breakfast and dinner were fabulous!
Lovely old building, friendly and helpful staff, a good sized room with a comfy bed. The pub and restaurant were fun and breakfast was good too. We would stay again.
Directly on the Coast to Coast trail.
Warm welcome at this quintessential country inn. Roomy bedroom with comfortable bed. Generous and tasty breakfast and lovely evening meal
The room that we stayed in was adequate but there was no hot water for a bath.
The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean.
The whole place felt grubby and felt like it needed a very deep clean.
Fabulous location and great food-thanks
Nothing - it was fabulous
Location, warm fires in the bar and the curry night
The rooms. In desperate need of an upgrade. No wire to kettle, random extension cords carpet to bathroom no carpet bar and cut toe on the raw carpet edge.
Beautiful place to stay with exceptional food and really friendly welcoming staff
sfeer, het eten, de gezellige accomodatie, goede parkeerplaats voor de motoren.
erg smalle bedden, niet meer van deze tijd.!
Location and surroundings, character of property and food was excellent.

The Horsehoe Hotel is a beautiful old building in an absolutely gorgeous location, right on the C2C path which was why we chose it. It has a lovely grassed area in front of the hotel which would be very pleasant on a warm summers evening. The new(ish) owner is very sweet and welcoming, as were all staff, and we had a really delicious evening meal. We were very pleased to have something other than the usual pub fare for yet another night. Breakfast was also delicious (although scrambled eggs were somewhat overcooked). The price was reflective of the fact that the hotel still needs some refurbishment. Saying that, we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and refurbishment needs are in my opinion cosmetic.
Unfortunately the weather was unseasonably cold when we visited in mid May and parts of the hotel were a bit chilly - the room heated up quickly with the radiator on full, but the large dining room struggled to get warm despite a lovely wood fire. An open fire in the bar area would have made it so more inviting, and might have even encouraged guests to stay downstairs and spend more on a drink. Since acquiring the property the new owner has apparently concentrated on refurbishing the kitchen but now needs to turn her attention to the rooms as they remain dated. Some things could be readily improved at little cost (such as replacing the cracked sink, or buying a pendant lightshade in room 6!), or with a lick of paint. Other things are clearly going to take time and £££ - our room windows clearly need replacing.
Mooie locatie en vriendelijk personeel
Eten duurde enorm lang, we moesten 1,5 uur wachten
A really good dinner and breakfast and the hotel is in a great place for walkers doing the Esk Valley Way or the Coast to Coast. Nice and quiet at night and a good spacious room. Friendly staff.
This place looks amazing from the outside but inside is quite a surprise as is somewhat rough and ready. The staff are pretty rushed off their feet and are looking to recruit more staff with immediate effect, but the place is in need of some serious tlc, or at least a week of painting and decorating (and maybe a trip to an auction house for some bargain old/historic furniture and paintings). Our room was possibly in the process of being repainted, as there was green frog tape still stuck around a portion of the ceiling and a few areas that had been filled and sanded but were yet to be painted. Which was interesting. The telly worked fine but was the size of a computer laptop screen, and I sadly didn't have my glasses with me. However despite giving strong Fawlty Towers vibes the staff were warm and friendly and the food was excellent. And if you're just after a place to get a generous meal and to lay your head after a hard day of walking you'll be fine. Just maybe not the venue for a romantic weekend or anniversary break...
Staff where excellent
Hotel is in need of updating . Wall paper coming off walls and ceiling shower rail fell off while taking shower due to having 1 screw in
Palmy was lovely. She was always upbeat and attentive.
Tiny bar area.
Close to the C2C trail, friendly and accommodating
Bed too soft (personal preference) too a long time to get breakfast. Dinner was ok, not as good as other places
The location was lovely. Tea and coffee facilities in room were good. Shower was great.
The mattress on left side of bed was broken. The right side was fine. Hole in the wall where door handle had broken the plaster. Window frames were all rotten. No shelving in bathroom for toiletries.
Nice friendly polite staff. Lovely location. Characterful public areas and nice garden. Beautiful old building. Although the menu was quite limited the food was well cooked and tasty.
The bedroom was disapointing, it was very small and the twin beds were a bit narrow and uncomfortable. The bathroom needed a full refurbishment. It didnt seem to be worth the price. Having said that we were told it was in new hands and the owners were working to upgrade the premises, so we could have just been unlucky with the room. Its a very large building so it will be a lot of work. I wish them well as they have the service element sorted.
Sehr freundliche Gastgeber, gutes Abendessen, idyllischer Ausblick in den Garten. Wir fühlten uns sehr willkommen.
Schlechter WLAN-Empfang auf dem Zimmer.
Lovely staff fantastic breakfast and a superb location
Nothing
Friendly staff, landlady/owner is a gem. Nice and warm, hot shower, good beers, excellent full English breakfast. Ideal for our stay on the coast to coast walk.
A generous breakfast
Resident areas very tired, paintwork chipped. A cramped room, no bedside light, bathroom mirror light not working, no chair. Very limited dinner menu because they were catering for a wedding.
It looks adorable from the outside. But it truly needs some thoughtful renovation on the inside. This may have been the oldest looking (and feeling) place of accommodation weve ec Ver stayed in the UK. It served our purposes. We just needed somewhere in the area to sleep for the night. The place has huge potential!
Location
The rubbish hotel
A beautiful old pub conveniently located on the coast-to-coast walking route. I stayed in a lovely old room. The staff were very hospitable, the grounds beautiful, and the food was delicious!
Perfect location good food welcoming atmosphere
Beautifully situated Inn in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors by the River Esk. On the Wainwrights Coast to Coast route. Close to Whitby and other coastal locations. Popular bar and restaurant. Lovely substantial breakfast.
The Inn was very busy in all areas, accommodation, bar and restaurant, however due to a shortage of staff wait times for food were lengthy. Staff positions were being advertised so waiting times will improve when positions are filled.
The area character
Not anything
We received a warm welcome and our two large dogs were very welcome too. The room we stayed in was perfect, very clean and had everything we needed for our one night stay. Breakfast was delicious too!
The mattress was a little soft but it wasn’t really a problem.
Dog friendly, great location, friendly staff, lovely food, good sized room and nice shower
Old fashioned and quirky

Nice location
Everything worn out and tired, mould on bathroom sealant , tv didn’t work aerial wire twisted together in two places, paintwork atrocious , seats in dining area threadbare
Fantastic
It was warm and comfortable and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The location was lovely with some great walks nearby.
There was a long wait for dinner and the food was nice but not exceptional
Nice location
Heating and hot water was off
The host and her staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They didn’t know much about the local area so we had to wing it a bit and rely on Google
Needs a lot of money spending on it, I appreciate the owner has only had it since May but it was tatty, dated and not of a good standard.
We had the best stay here and the most fun evening of our coast to coast walk. We lucked out by staying during an open mic, jam night which was awesome. The owner and locals were all really friendly and the amazing Ellie, Guy and Joe behind the bar were particularly awesome, so thank you! The pub itself is gorgeous and in a great location. Our room was comfortable, the beer was nicely kept and the breakfast was spot on. We would love to return one day and can't recommend this place highly enough.
The hungover walk the next day
Staff were friendly.
We arrived on a rainy day. The room was cold and there didn't seem to be any heating on. An electric heater was provided. The window leaked and water dripped in constantly throughout the night. The food was not good. Fish and chips looked like something you would have bought frozen from a supermarket, not the battered fish others have shown pictures of. My wife asked for mashed potato with her dish, but they couldn't provide this despite some main courses coming with mash.
Excellent food, very nice and friendly people
Lack of a Blind at the bathroom window.
Food was great! Excellent breakfast. New management is doing great! Verry welcome for us walking Coast 2 Coast.
Bar was under construction, but for high season it will be fabulous.
Breakfast …. Good quality food … pleasant service … very attentive
Building was beautiful but in need of repair and decoration
Staff very welcoming Food drink Location Value for money
Rooms and decor are tired requiring renovation
Log fire in the bar and a good evening meal
The heating wasn’t on however an electric heater was provided but was inadequate . Bare light bulb on ceiling and curtain partially hanging off the rail. Breakfast booked for 8am however no staff in attendance. Eventually someone arrived. A full English breakfast was offered but I was told that there was no bacon and no mushrooms so instead I ordered Smoked Salmon and Scrambled eggs. When it was served the eggs had been cooked with onions! This made it uneatable. I could only eat three small slices of gluten free toast. When I came to leave there was no staff despite my calling for assistance. I had to unbolt the front door to let myself out!
The staff were excellent. Sarah was so welcoming, asking my opinion on the freshly laid natural Christmas decorations - they looks lovely, you could tell she was artistic type. The fire was raging all evening tendered by the chef and bar man religiously. Then in the morning, the breakfast was "chefs kiss" perfect.
It's not a luxury resort it's a down to earth, get stuck in place, which I think is ideal.
Great location. Friendly, helpful staff.
Rooms were very tired, needs a bit of an upgrade.
Lovely meal in evening. We were there for curry night
Needs a refurb or a repaint at the very least. Shame as lovely location and atmospheric.
Very friendly staff clean rooms lovely big bath towels good shower. We had dinner good excellent.
Beautiful location
The Horseshoe Hotel is misnomer. it being a pub with rooms and nowhere near a hotel offering. The new owners have a massive task on their hands to bring this lovely old pub up to today's standards. The room was cramped, dirty and very tired. Once a full refurbishment has happened this pub will have great potential given its location and character. Until then charging full rates left us very disappointed
