Shower could be better

I have stayed at Fence Gate Lodge several times previously and have always found it comfortable and slept well, which is exactly why I chose to return. Unfortunately, my experience on this occasion was completely different.

I arrived in the evening at 8pm having spent the day working and an early start from south wales where I live. I arrived with a confirmed booking for which I had already been charged £155, only to be told there was no prepared room available. I was told there was one room, but it had not been cleaned, leaving me with no option but to find and pay for alternative accommodation at very short notice. The delay also meant I missed dinner, and I am now having to wait up to 7–10 days for the £155 to be refunded. For a returning guest who arrived expecting a confirmed and paid-for room, the way this was handled was extremely disappointing.

Staff unhelpful bar and restaurant not open not told we had to book breakfast water for shower Luke warm and fan in bathroom keep running most of night couldn’t even print out a paper receipt when leaving.

Location. The building, the foyer. Size of bed. Furnishings. Bathroom.

The was dirt in several places eg wardrobe hinges. There was dirt, crumbs on part of the carpet. Neither myself nor the receptionist could operate the safe.

Charged £20 to use a sofabed even though a suite with a double and sofabed was booked for 3 people. Was not made aware of this additional charge prior to booking.

It is situated in a nice location and the building is clean and tidy

The owners placed us in a suite above a party. The noise from the party was similar that we could not even hear the television let alone sleep. When we challenged the managers we were informed that it was our fault for booking a hotel that catered for events. We are still waiting for a phone call that is not going to come for the refund we asked for

Banging doors. Constantly. ALL the doors were auto-closing fire doors. When people came in of left, those doors banged. Loudly.

Only negative a small one would be the bar area and outside area for sunny days although the pub is a bit up the road I think something with grassy area for children and somewhere to sit in the sunshine would be lovely but we loved it x

The entire experience; the staff were awesome (especially the young lad on reception Friday night - his parents should be so proud of him. Good luck with his studies in Germany). The decor, finishings and the setting were all perfect - just wish we could have stayed for longer.

The location is fantastic, the staff were very polite and helpful. The food was really nice.

The one thing that let our stay down was how ridiculously hot the room was, we turned the thermostat all the way down but the heating stayed on. Also one of the windows wouldn’t open.

The radiators should have been switched on before we got into the room. It was a small room but had everything we needed. Very comfortable bed & pillows. Great shower & excellent breakfast.

The breakfast was excellent and we were very well attended to by the receptionist.

Loved the smiles from the receptionist on duty when we arrived, such a lovely lady. Liked the room though thought it might have been a little larger. Liked the bathroom and the shower. Loved the comfortable bed. Loved the breakfast choice and quality of the food, freshly cooked to order.

Towels could have been better, Bath sheets rather than bath towels, most hotels of a lower category at least have bath sheets. Room seemed a little cramped, the bedside units and the lights perhaps could be smaller? Constructive comment not complaint.

The location was excellent. Staff members were very friendly and helpful. The shower was very good.

Although the breakfasts were good they were not as good value for money compared with my stays in other places owing to lack of choice and their self service aspects. The bedroom was very small which impacted on our enjoyment of it.

Brilliant, ticks every box. We stay at some very nice places but this place is exceptional. There is a lady called Kirsty who works in the evening on the reception who really is a special person. So welcoming and genuinely lovely who isn’t scripted like most staff in places. We have already recommended it to people we know! We will return very soon.
