Breakfast was very good! Fresh fruit and a really nice hot dish each moring.
There was just a small parking section right by an intersection. We were asked to back in which was a little tricky coming off that street.
Beautiful home and wonderful staff
The window had an air conditioner in it and the pigeons would sit on the window sill at night cooing.
The foyer only.
It was very hot without a central air conditioner. My room was dark and dingy filled with heavy furniture. I asked for no feathers with pillows and duvet, only pillows were changed and I spent the week without a duvet or blanket. I had my room cleaned twice in 6 days. Garbage not removed, or fresh towels provided. This was very expensive and not worth it. The toilet was leaking all over the floor and the portable AC unit was pouring water onto the carpet. The bed frame was filthy with food crumbs and thick grit. All for $2,700. No words.
A very beautiful mansion with atmosphere
Les lieux sont magnifiques! La chambre était extrêmement spacieuse et confortable. Le personnel est très attentionné et réactif. Le déjeuner était splendide. J'ai tout aimé et je reviendrais n'importe quand.
Rien!
Mary is a gem. Very gracious and conscientious.
La location
La mancanza di comodità tipo hotel
I liked the ambiance of the hotel. Mary was very nice and went beyond to please our needs. Her pie was delicious! Thursday breakfast!
Everything was super!
The breakfasts were delicious, hot and on time. Mary was awesome and went out of her way to help in any way she could. Great to chat with her. The towels were luxurious and the beds VERY comfortable. The room was quiet. The bathroom was spacious.
The house is beautiful and is a heritage property, but it is in need of some serious TLC to keep that status. There is dry rot on the pillars at the front entrance, the front garden is unkempt. First impressions seeing the tired outside had us worried. There is no elevator so be prepared for plenty of stairs, which was not mentioned online. The jets in the jacuzzi tub in our room didn’t work and the shower head was clogged and had poor output despite there being good water pressure. A small elevator would be beneficial for guests who struggle with stairs. No powder room on the main floor.
We just finished a 2 night stay at the beautiful Ryan Mansion in St. John's. Our room was fantastic with the most comfortable king size bed and spacious bathroom. We were given plush robes and slippers. The most enjoyable part of the Inn is the hostess Mary! She is so friendly, accommodating and provides the best recommendations for your stay. She provided the best homemade breakfast we have ever had. Mary goes out of her way to ensure all your needs are met. We highly recommend you stay at this Mansion with so much history! Everything was perfect.
Luxurious, quiet, spacious, location, manager
Location was fantastic. Big rooms with lots of history. The lady in charge was friendly.
I wish there was more flexibility with breakfast. We had to leave early on our last day and because it was before 8:30 am, we did not get breakfast.
Very old world - full of character.
Big comfortable room, beautiful architecture in the building.
Bathroom needed a little repair but nothing significant
Historic building, full of story, amazing and helpful staff
Très bien accueilli Chambre confortable Petit déjeuner au top
Beautiful surroundings; great breakfasts; lovely hospitality
Would have liked a grab bar in the bath area
Our room was beautiful, spotless, and very comfortable. The house is a marvelous historic property in central St. John's. We'd be happy to return!
Great place to stay
St Johns is a very fun city. So glad we stayed at Ryan Mansion -- good breakfast every morning, charming hotel and great walkable location. BUT, the real treasure is Mary who shares Newfoundland color with a smile.
I think Mary was charming and clearly is able to do so much single handedly. She was always available, a great cook, cleaner and general do it all. I hope the owner appreciates what a gem she is.
Curb appeal. It sets a poor example to see a store front in need of repair. Particularly the stairs and pillars would benefit from painting. It would help visually challenged persons to have a yellow line on the lip of each step to the front door.
We stayed at the Ryan Mansion for 4 nights and it was a lovely stay. The beds were very comfortable, it’s close to downtown, very clean, and Mary, who wears all the hats in the hotel, was super accommodating. Her breakfasts were delicious! Upon arrival we noticed our room, which was on the 4th floor (so lots of stairs which was fine for us), was very clean but a bit dark due to a small window. We also felt the walls in our room could use a paint job to freshen it up. Parking is also a bit tricky but there is a designated spot if you need it. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful. And I can’t say enough about Mary’s breakfasts and her attention to detail. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. She is a sweetheart and made our stay that much more enjoyable. We felt right at home during our stay.
What a comfy and beautiful room in a great location. Nice and quiet and Mary took excellent care of us.
Beautiful place. Mary was fantastic! Great breakfasts.
There was so many stairs to our room. We didn’t realize there wasn’t a ln elevator.
Beautiful interior
Rooms a bit rundown, as was the outside Breakfast wasn’t flexible Power problems
The mansion was comfortable, welcoming, and full of history. We slept so well in our comfy king-size bed!
Our hostess was a riot—she truly embodied the spirit of St. John’s!
The hotel, is more like a B&B with luxury private bathrroms. In this day and age, a rare find, exquite woodwork, art, and furniture. Can you imagine.... a fully stocked bar for guests to use with an honesty booklet for saying what you used. In case you don't look closely at the site, previous guests have been king/prince Charles, and princess Margret.
The Ryan Mansion is a gorgeous historic property. The rooms are beautiful and the daily breakfast provided was delicious. Mary was friendly and helpful and has a great sense of humor! Would definitely recommend!
Beautiful, historic building. Rooms were well equipped, lovely and spacious. Beds and linens were very comfortable. Breakfast was yummy. Mary is a delight who gives her all to ensure a pleasant stay.
Good location (walking distance to downtown attractions) and beautiful decor and spacious room. Parking for those who need it. Interesting history to the mansion.
Had to carry our own luggage up several flights of stairs, one set being very narrow and were told if we banged into a photo and broke it, we had to pay…not a great greeting for guests. The owner was not there and only a caretaker who was sure to inform us of her aches and pains and we felt unwelcome and guilted us to ask for anything. We had paid for a spa tub, there was one but it did not work!!! We paid for a fridge but there was none so asked how we could get milk for our morning coffee (as there were no dried milk packets). We were told we would have to come down four flights of stairs to pick up a small jug of milk to have a coffee before breakfast! And then we had to remember to bring it back if any left. There was no safe in the room (no problem for us but maybe for others). There was no iron nor board although it says there was one. There was a bar but no one to serve. The artwork may have been lovely but I suggest the owner sell some artwork and hire more staff and not leave everything to the caretaker who seemed to do everything…take reservations, prepare rooms, do laundry, make breakfast, cleaning, etc. The poor woman was overwhelmed. Breakfast was not up to the standards of a boutique hotel. This hotel, although beautiful, was not worth $500 or more a night.
The house is beautifully decorated, the bedrooms and bathrooms are large and comfortable, but there was no milk or sugar on the coffee tray (and no one around to request some). The public rooms downstairs are stylish and comfortable. There is a bar but it wasn't staffed and we couldn't figure out if it was an honesty bar or not so we left it alone. There is off road parking available.
The hotel appears to be set up to suit the owners rather than the guests. It was a baffling experience. There is apparently only one member of staff, Mary, an older woman who had to have a rest after climbing two flights of stairs to our room, and informed us that she was going to put on the clothes dryer in the utility room next to us so it would be a bit noisy for a while (it was 7pm at night, why not earlier in the day?). We were offered a choice of breakfast at either 8.30am or 9.30 am which was not ideal, and although we got downstairs at 8.32am, we had to wait 15 minutes before Mary arrived who informed us that she had been there at 8.30 exactly but then had to make breakfast for the guests who'd arrived on time (ouch, especially as we had delayed going down because we didn't want to arrive too early!). We were certainly left feeling we were inconveniences rather than valued guests. The Mansion needs additional staff and help for Mary who appears to have to clean, cook and take care of the guests on her own.
Ryan Mansion feels very luxurious - the building is beautiful! You have to arrange your check in with staff as the door is otherwise locked (meaning it's safe). This could be inconvenient if you are arriving at an odd time, but for us it was manageable. There was in-room air conditioning which kept us sufficiently cool. The room had a coffee maker and a beautiful soaker tub. The bed was comfortable. The plated breakfast was excellent - of note, breakfast was offered at two times which might not work for you depending on your plans for that day; however we were offered coffee to go when we could not do breakfast. It's located uphill and it's about an 8 minute walk downhill to Water Street. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We very much enjoyed our stay!
Very well decorated both rooms and common space.
Electricity was unstable in my room. Breakfast time was fixed and no flexibility.
A few things were disappointing. It was our 26th wedding anniversary, which was communicated in the reservation and there was no recognition - no card in the room or complimentry wine or chocolates. For the price of the room - I was surprised there wasn't this extra hosptiality. Also - we were not checked on to see if we needed fresh towels or coffee replenishment for the room (we stayed there 2 nights). We did have a do not distrurb sign on the door as we didn't want the room cleaned but had to go hunting for coffee on the 2nd day and when we asked - we were directed to a supply closet on the second floor to fetch it ourselves. This is not reasonable for a boutique hotel at this price point. While the property is lovely and holds historical interest ...on it's own does not warrent the price point - the service needs to be pristine - which it was not. While our contact person was friendly - at times - I would say too casual and over shared personal details. On the second night - there were guests that were very loud until 9:30/10. Given there was no one onsight after 4pm - there was no one to manage noise levels. Overall - while the property was beautiful - it was disappointing as a lux, special occassion venue and I would not recommend that that price point.
Wonderful stay - absolutely beautiful property, in a great location. Also, lovely staff and a wonderful breakfast every morning. Would stay here again.
It was a stunning property and close to a very nice park. The property manager was very flexible, friendly and kind.
The Ryan Mansion is a beautiful property
Could park easily. Hostess extraordinarily accommodating & helpful.
Having to carry heavy bags up 2 flights of stairs.
The property was close to Water St.
Unfortunately, the property didn't match the description and photos on the booking site. The unit is located on the corner of two busy roads, which was extremely noisy and far from the peaceful garden surroundings I was expecting.
-Close to some amenities. -The room was spacious. -Nice whirlpool. -Our host was quite responsive during our stay. -Comfortable bed. -The espresso maker was quite nice. -Plenty of towels.
-The actual mansion was quite quiet except for the amount of vehicular traffic in the neigbourhood. -No A/C or fan in the room, which meant one had to open a window for cool air, which meant listening to vehicular traffic into the night.
Not what we thought it was going to be
Breakfast was absolutely amazing. The woodwork is stunning, very quiet area and near a lovely park. We woke up to a beautiful winter scene with snow covered trees all along the street and our car was even cleaned off, that was a very considerate thing to do. Enjoyed our stay.
Amazing place and fantastic friendly service. Will definitely be back. The breakfast that was included is better than almost any you will get at a restaurant.
Everything was decorated so beautiful. Food was amazing and staff were great!
The history of this property makes it a must to see!
Loved it!!!! What a beautiful place I would definitely stay there again. Mary was amazing!

Beautiful, historic property. Great hospitality. Would come back again:)
breakfast were delicious
felt it was too expensive
Beautiful property, lovely big room and an excellent breakfast, am looking forward to coming back.
This place is amazing! It was beyond my expectations. Extremely clean, cozy and comfortable. It made us feel like royalty. Housekeeping is exceptional and went out of her way to accommodate us.
It feels like to be home. Decoration and intimacy.
I think that we don’t need to ask to arrange the bed and the room . It should be automatically.
We enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was delicious!
Absolutely loved the carefully and skilfully made breakfast each day, served in beautiful surroundings. Bed and bedding were luxurious, and rooms are so tastefully appointed. The artwork throughout the house is stunning, as are the many fine pieces of furniture and rugs, lamps and the like. A pleasure to be in such an atmosphere.
A third-floor room without an elevator is quite a chore when there are mobility limitations. But given the age and historic character of the house this is not easily fixed.
Beautiful turn of the century mansion. Gorgeous wood finishing and staircase. Large rooms and big modern bathroom
No elevator up to the 3rd floor
really pleasant staff - Mary was doing it all herself and was very friendly and informative. Really let us feel the Newfoundland hospitality
Everythng
Nothing
Mary (reception, cook and cleaning lady) was friendly and very accommodating. The room (two queen beds on the third floor) was very large, with great soaker tub for two, but the jets weren’t working due to “electrical issue”. The interior of the house appears well maintained, and rooms/bathrooms are beautifully decorated, very clean and very cozy bed/pillows. The exterior of the house is greatly in bad state - front entrance posts are rotting and house exterior needs a major paint job - not good first impression upon arrival. Inside of house is fine! Great location! Lots of hills around the house, so if you’re walking, keep that in mind as the walk back from downtown is steep!
The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable which I appreciated very much because I came down with a cold and needed to stay in bed one of the days I was there. The breakfasts were delicious and Mary was also very accommodating for my needs.
The wifi reception in the room was poor so I had to use cell data which, in turn, ended up causing issues with my cell phone data plan overage.
Old world charm. Clean. Excellent host.
Poor wifi
It was a wonderful stay. Comfortable bed, nice large bathroom and bedroom. Enjoyed the little bar at night and the common area. Breakfast was delicious. Convenient to everything.
Beautiful and historical
Outside looks terrible and paint coming off. Good news is they are repairing it
Overall for the age of the proberty it wasn’t bad liked the old furniture
Two many stairs
The staff at the property are very kind. Personable when lol do anything to assist you. The property itself is beautiful rooms amazing beds very comfortable.
Fabulous breakfast freshly cooked each day
Beautiful decor & every consideration for comfort. The rooms are beautiful; products great - smells divine.
Breakfast was a bit uninspired. But plentiful & fresh.
The breakfast was exceptional and different each day. Perfect portions. Good coffee, juice an water as well.
Nothing we can think of.
Gorgeous property. Well maintained. Even good artwork!
We were too hot using the beautiful down duvet, but there was no lighter weight option. We ended up removing the duvet from the cover and just using the cover. (Life hack!).
It was a wonderful experience and Mary was just marvellous and so helpful, kind and thoughtful. Thank you .
We loved everything. The breakfast was incredible and the property was unique, perfectly located, and gorgeous. Mary was welcoming, helpful, and took such good care of us. Her warmth and kindness made us feel at home. Robert was a gracious host and had excellent recommendations for what to see and where to eat. We had a fabulous time and can’t wait to return to Newfoundland where we will absolutely stay at The Ryan Mansion.
Location is good, next to a big park, 10-15 min walk from Water street and its retaurants. Nice breakfast (eggs and fresh fruits)
Large bathroom but nothing to hand the towels! It would be so easy, and convenient to add a couple of hooks. Old carpet in the room.
The home was beautiful, as well as, the surroundings. The breakfast was delicious!
I didn’t like being asked whether the tub would be used. I also didn’t like not being able to get stuff in room, when check in time was unavailable due to personal reasons. I would think at this price….you could make arrangements.
Very helpful staff
The location was excellent, walking distance to most places. Beds were comfortable and the place was very clean. The host was very personable and spoke to everyone at breakfast. The staff are available to help with anything you need.
It was very hot in the house, even with the AC on in the room. Breakfast was good, but not plentiful.
We liked the beautiful history. We loved exploring all the rooms and looking at the furniture and decorations.
The parking situation.
Awesome once again
