Stunning building ..we had 11 rooms and they were all roomy and well equipped ..also had character Staff very friendly and helpful Lots of restaurants in short walking distance Also a really good neighbourhood cafe within the hotel which was great if only want smaller breakfast or coffees in morning
Nothing to dislike
Stunning building that has all the comfort inside while keeping a lot of character Roomy and vlean snd had everything we needed
Nothing to dislike
Great location . Good food and lovely hotel with lots of atmosphere.
Although the room was excellent internally the view was very poor . Looking over the hotel roof A/C plant wasn’t what was expected.
Very comfortable standard room with everything you could need. Helpful front desk staff. On site parking although you have to pay for it. Perfect location to mooch around Durham and see the sites.
Don't normally use hotel restaurants but I was knackered after a long drive so I chanced the Marco Pierre White restaurant. TBH I didn't really enjoy the bar and dining experience. Ordered a dry martini and got a tumbler of just the dry vermouth with an ice cube. Would have expected any experienced bar tender to know a dry martini required gin and an olive 🙄. Chose a fillet steak lyonnaise the steak was good but the sauce far too salty. Also for £34 you'd expect some vegetables but instead had to order extra veg and got a cup of frozen peas and some fried new potatoes when they were supposed to be boiled. Not a great wine list either. Waiting staff were very attentive but the whole "celebrity chef" experience was underwhelming.
Nearness to the river, cathedral and castle. Easy parking. Great architecture. Nice food served in a stunning setting. Above all, such cheerful and attentive staff.
Only niggle - as is the case with so many hotels - only one armchair in our room - and a superior one! We like to spend some time reading whilst away - it's a rare treat - but sitting on the bed, no matter how comfortable it is, is far from ideal. Even more so when you are in your seventies!
Excellent location. Super friendly staff. Historic unique building.
Breakfast was disappointing. There was a strange smell in some of the public areas. Parking was expensive.
the bathroom is very clean and the staff are friendly. location of the hotel is perfect.
the furniture is very old and there is a web in the coffee corner.

Very noisy plumbing most of the night. No opening windows.
Overpriced. Not worth £274 a night. The extra £20 car park charge is too much when paying £274 for one night, it should be waived.
From arriving Janet was very professional and friendly.. pointed out everything about the hotel we needed to know.. how to get into Durham and a map of the area.. our room was very comfortable and perfect bed linen .. the layout was well thought out.. just one thing for us .. a small comfy chair would have been nice.. admittedly lots of areas in the hotel to sit in nice surroundings.. just a little thing I love architecture so the internals of the hotel were amazing.. how much of the original features were still there The restaurant was something else in how the decor had been done and finally thanks to Hollie for her very happy professional goodbye.. we will return
Absolutely nothing .. very well run hotel
Everything. It is absolutely gorgeous, room was beautiful and clean, super friendly staff and the best breakfast we have ever had!

Location and style of property with lots of original features
All great
Staff were absolutely fantastic
Beautiful building which has been tastefully maintained. Rooms decorated to a high standard. Staff very friendly and professional. Breakfast was excellent. Drinks and food in the bar were good quality.
The bed was a bit too firm for us.
The friendly staff.
Nothing to complain about.
I had a room on the top floor with skylights and a fantastic view of rooftops. A very unique architecture. The room was very comfortable and quiet.
The staff in the breakfast room were not professional and the breakfast was not fresh or delicious.
Breakfast was good. Great selection to suit every taste
The meal in the restaurant in the evening was disappointing. Food quality wasn't good.
Room and decor of hotel
room was quite warm even though adjusted the air con and couldn't open a window , very busy at check in but we might have just been unlucky in this aspect
Great location, very convenient for the town centre
Nothing
The decor and history of the building and the passion the staff showed for the hotel and the comfort of their guests. Our room very comfortable and very well equipped especially the shower. Excellent location when visiting Durham.
There was nothing to dislike.
The room was a little small, but totally adequate. Nice lobby area for the case and good bathroom. The only down side was in the evening the room was very dark, limited low level lighting. Fine for just relaxing but not for trying to apply makeup. The staff were brilliant, so helpful and cheerful. Probability one of the best in any hotel I’ve stayed in
The low level lighting was too low!
A nice bar and very comfortable and spacious room also a wonderful room to have breakfast in
The hotel was amazing and beautiful location, the building was out if this world very historic
Great location, beautiful historic building, staff were helpful re storing luggage and keeping a birthday cake in the fridge, room was small but comfortable and immaculately clean. The shower was fabulous.
Nothing, everything was great. One tiny improvement would be to have more coffee pods when the room is occupied by 2 people so each person has a choice of flavour.
Staff and facilities
Room needed dusting Sink needed maintenance
Rooms where nice, breakfast the next day was good.
The price of the room was same price as we pay for another hotel in Newcastle which is more modern.
Stayed for my partners special birthday. Made a fuss and made it even more special nice little touches, a birthday card and message left in the room
Nothing
Location of hotel and quality of room
Bathroom fan very noisy
Characterful hotel in the former grand council building. Beautiful original features particularly in the bar and restaurant. Room is good size and nice bathroom. Location is excellent to old town, cathedral and castle.
Difficult to make a large civic building feel cosy but it’s been done pretty well.
Amazing staff who were friendly, professional and efficient and did all they could to look after us.
This hotel locates on a quiet street very close to the center of Durham, I could walk to the Durham Cathedral in about 10 minutes. There is a gate for each segment of the corridors, and guests need to use their room key card to let the gates open automatically. This made me feel quite safe. The building of this hotel is a historical building, the corridors and glass on windows are very special. The dining hall is used to be the Council Chambers to Durham County Council, so when I had my breakfast there I felt I was part of the history. The rooms are all very quiet throughout the day (I booked two rooms). I felt the highlight of the rooms are the bathrooms. The heating towel rails were extremely hot, I've never thought heating towel rails could be so powerful, the cloth washed late at night was all dry in the next morning, which was very helpful to our trip! The controller of shower water could keep the water at a fixed temperature, and the water was at my desired temperature at the moment when I pressed the button! At the same time, the water was very strong. That's amazing to me, I've never seen a shower worked so well like this. I will definitely stay with this hotel should I visit Durham again.
None. Everything was perfect.
Hôtel dans un bâtiment historique à deux pas de la cathédrale.
Notre chambre mansardée n'avait pas de vue directe (privilégier celles du premier étage).
The building itself is amazing inside and out, the bathroom was very modern and clean and the bedroom was very cosy in the evening and I had an incredible view. The position is excellent, as it's only a 5 minute walk to the old town centre and a 10 Min walk to the cathedral.
I found the bed very hard and the pillows also would need improving. I asked the receptionist and they said they would add a duvet, it helped a bit, but I think they should keep some mattress toppers in the hotel as a good night's rest is the most important thing when you are traveling for business or pleasure. I think the building is beautiful but it could be amazing with a little more upkeep. The gym is not very good at all and not very clean and had a funny smell. I wanted a bowl of rice from the restaurant (it was on the menu, as part of another dish) and the staff weren't particularly nice or helpful and said they couldn't do it. So I liked this hotel but overpriced for all these reasons.

Really nicely decorated, cosy room, great bathroom too!

Friendly helpful staff at reception and in the restaurant. The room was lovely and modern and spotlessly clean. Walk in shower an added bonus. The hotel is in a great location, central and close to the cathedral. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and attentive helpful staff. We had Sunday lunch which was also very good. We had a great weekend and we will be back.
The only reason this hotel isn’t graded 10 is because parking is tricky. There are limited spaces at the hotel. We managed to get a spot but it is quite pricey to park all day.
The hotel is in a great location for exploring on foot Durham town centre and the historic quarter. The actual hotel is an historic building in its own right with the conversion to a hotel retaining many original features. Our room was a nice size with a large bathroom and good shower. Breakfast was served in the restaurant which was excellent, the staff were attentive and most helpful. All in all we had a lovely three night stay.
The road outside was a tad noisy, the original sash windows do have secondary glazing but didn't quite insulate the road noise. It didn't interfere with our sleep but was noticable on waking.
Close to everything Staff welcoming and warm
Some areas of the room need some attention, peeling paint, some damp patches on the roof.
Wonderful old building put to a new purpose. The rotunda was incredible, now containing the excellent Marco Pierre White restaurant.
The lifts were out of order and it lacked facilities like a spa or gym.
Beautiful hotel centrally located. Our room was spacious with the best shower we have had in this country.Bed was very comfortable with lovely cosy duvet and everything was exceptionally clean. All the staff we spoke to were very friendly and helpful.Would not hesitate to stay here again and recommend to others.
Nothing
The location is central to all amenities
Too many corridors it got a little confusing
everything. I had asked in advance for an accessible room and it was perfect for my needs. The bed and armchair were comfortale, very good facilities generally
no comment
The original features.
Typically excellent friendly Durham service with a brilliant if slightly quirky environment. The corridors definitely still have the feel of council chambers, and doubly the restaurant. But that’s what makes it interesting, and the food and everything about this place is superb. A bit like staying In a brilliantly well thought out museum. We only had breakfast not evening meal in the restaurant but it was excellent. There wasn’t anything we could fault, cleanliness etc. perhaps slightly the price, but it was very busy and quite likely this wasn’t your typical room price. Would definitely be my choice of hotel visiting Durham or `Durham area again.
We were in a room on 3rd floor, 2 windows were on roof so only fresh air was the air con. Room wasn't pictured in any of online websites.
Hard mattress Soybean oil used in 95% of dishes. I have a soya allergy if I knew this before hand I would not have booked this hotel.
Great location and lovely rooms
Room was too hot- there was air con but it was very loud so couldn’t sleep - eventually - second night - managed to sleep with air con off and windows open. Thankfully the street outside wasn’t to noisy. Table service at breakfast is very slow. Even for a pot of tea.
Beautiful building
V friendly staff and bathroom nice.
Lack of parking a big issue
Food, staff, location, atmosphere all great
We stayed for a double celebration for 1night and ate in the restaurant. Room was spot on very clean and everything you need was there. Went in to restaurant on the night and hands down one of the best meals we have ever had absolutely fantastic. Well done hotel indigo
Big thanks to Damien for opening and recording us reviewing the original nourishment (since 1981) . I Rate him 5 star for his amazing customer service. If you see him give him a BIG tip.
Excellent location. Beautifully clean and well appointed rooms. We only booked a standard room, thought about upgrading but glad we didn’t bother because our room was lovely. Good breakfast. Friendly staff.
It’s easy to get lost in the corridors
Excellent stay at this beautiful hotel, the building is amazing. The staff were very attentive told us all about the history of this lovely hotel. Breakfast in the Marco Pierre White restaurant was excellent lots of choice on offer.

After staying at the Indigo Hotel in Durham, I wanted to express my satisfaction and thanks for an excellent stay. The staff make this Hotel extra special. We were welcomed by Holly on arrival, and her friendliness and enthusiasm for Durham were infectious. I can't say enough how each member of staff impressed us with both their professionalism and friendliness. The hotel itself is ideally located (just a short stroll into the city centre), serves great breakfasts, and hosts the Marco Pierre White restaurant in a very opulent environment. Our room was also everything we needed, and very comfortable. We can't wait to come back!!
My wife and I stayed for one night and regret we didn’t stay longer. From check in to check out we loved this hotel. Great staff at reception who were welcoming and friendly. The bedroom was comfortable and quiet. A Very clean and well equipped bathroom and a small separate sitting area. We had a lovely evening meal. The staff were attentive and helped make the experience memorable. Breakfast too was lovely and I look forward to returning sometime soon.
Parking a bit expensive
Location is within easy walk to most attractions and river walks.
Diner was disappointing as we had such expectations that fell short. Having said that the staff serving our table were excellent.
Friendly staff and lovely historic buildings. Coffee shop is a disappointment though - poor quality food and much more could be made of the space to make it more inviting. Our room was spacious ( but I think we may have been upgraded from standard) and the shower was excellent. Location was quiet but easy reach of the market place, castle & cathedral.
The rooms were beautiful and well maintained
Breakfast and bar
Nothing
It was very near to the centre and all the amenities, restaurants and shops etc Very friendly and helpful staff, comfortable room with little extras (drinks, nexpresso machine, canned water) good toiletries, very comfortable bed, offer of refilling teas/ coffees etc, on day 2 without having to ask, had a fridge in the room that I wasn't expecting. A beautful old and characterful building that was well maintained and smart inside.
Stunning building.
Food was tasty but vastly over priced. If you extend your Mon-Fri 2 course special's, your stunning restaurant could be full on Saturdays instead of empty. The front of house staff were very professional, but as the chef wasn't busy, to serve a burned black burger bun, was I am sure, not on brand. I don't recommend on a Saturday afternoon.
Housed in the stunning Grade II-listed Old Shire Hall, this boutique hotel beautifully blends historic charm with style. Every corner feels special—from the impressive Victorian façade to the thoughtfully restored interiors that honour its rich past as Durham's former headquarters. My room was compact, and it had almost everything I needed including decent wifi connection. Bathroom slippers and a bathrobe would have been a nice touch. Please stock your rooms with these. Aside from the location and the building itself which is a standout feature, a real highlight was dining at the on-site Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill. Set beneath the magnificent dome of the old Council Chamber, the restaurant is top notch dining. Charlotte the lovely history student from Scarborough mixes the best cocktails. I'll be back!
Breakfast was excellent
Decor was amazing, both in communal areas and the gorgeous, comfortable bedroom. Breakfast amazing!
The hotel was lovely, very clean classy rooms, well impressed. X
Nothing
An amazing building. However, slightly disappointed with the room.
Dark and room in need of refurb.
Lovely characterful building, 2 minute walk from town centre Had a lovely meal in Marco Pierre White restaurant. Bar staff particularly friendly.
We happened to book during University graduation so room prices were rather high and restaurant was very busy
Location
Sealed windows and stairs confusing
Good location in an interesting historic building. Room average, but comfy bed and most usual contents, hairdryer, tea coffee etc. One of the bathrobes really needed to be binned as had reached the end of it's life! More complimentary water would have been good, only two little cans each day in the fridge and we were in the middle of a heatwave! Breakfast ok with variety of choices. Staff welcoming, friendly and helpful. Overall, a nice stay in a lovely old building, but feel room and public areas, including restaurant, need a refresh re furnishings etc. All a bit tired and I feel it doesn't really justify the high room rates. However, had a good time anyway!
Location and dining facilities.
No air conditioning working in the room which had fixed closed windows and was south facing. Therefore we had a terrible night’s sleep which surely is the one thing a hotel needs to provide well. Hotel says we should have called them in the middle of the night (ie. They would have turned on our aircon from the system!).
Service was good and friendly reception
WIFI was slow. Food in the Restaurant could be better. Service was good
Beautiful hotel in converted Victorian building. Comfortable and reasonably spacious bedroom. Good bathroom. Public areas of the hotel are are gorgeous. Lovely bar and restaurant area. On site parking is a plus.
Nothing not to like
My partner had some training in Newcastle so we decided to stay in Durham the night before. It was a sunny Sunday and we managed to get street parking, just a minute walk away, for under £10, it was free between 6pm and 8pm. The outside of the building is very impressive and once inside it is like stepping back in time. The mix of old and modern is done very well. We had a standard room and couldn't have been happier with it. Massive comfy bed, pillows were soft and comfy too. Crisp clean bedding and towels, tea and coffee making facilities, iron, safe, tv everything perfect. Our room was to the side and quiet. Breakfast was lovely, a good buffet selection to help yourself, whilst you wait for your order from the menu. All the staff members here were outstanding. We are so impressed that we are going to book for December and also book for our daughter and son in law. Durham is an amazing city and this hotel truly makes the visit extra special.
Everything was great, from location to service to the Marco Pierre white restaurant. The room upgrade was a lovely gesture that was much appreciated! Highly recommend
The hotel had been very sympathetically converted from its previous life. All the staff were excellent and very helpful.
Nothing
Fantastic stay. The hotel oozes character and its transformation from a Shire Hall, to Council Offices and then a hotel is done sensitively and brilliantly with features maintained. It makes a stay here unique. Rooms are clean and spacious and the shower is brilliant. Breakfast is fantastic- top quality ingredients- and the staff are really friendly. Location is great and we did get into the car park which is chargeable at £20 per night. The only fly in the ointment perhaps? Still- a great stay and highly recommended.
Love the location
Always love it but bathroom could have been cleaner
We went as a group of 11 for an afternoon tea. Hey were able to accommodate all of our dietary requirements which included, vegan, gluten free, lactose free and a couple of just plain picky eaters. A selection of sandwiches, scone with jam and clotted cream and cakes arrived on a tiered plate. Tea and coffee with endless refills also came as part of the deal. Surroundings are spectacular, it’s the old council chambers in what was the shire hall. It was quiet when we first arrived but did fill up as the afternoon progressed. At £19.95 per person this is amazingly priced, you get a lot for your money, this is one of the least expensive afternoon teas I have had but is most certainly one of the best. The staff were first rate and very attentive even when it started to fill up. I will definitely return. When we left we set up camp in the bar and it the cocktail menu. Hanks to all who contributed to a great afternoon/evening.
Lovely room which had all the bells and whistles - fridge, coffee maker, air con etc. The building is amazing and worth going to for a look around! Evening meal in Marco Pierre White restaurant was really good and not extortionate. Breakfast in the same restaurant was good but not to the same standard as the evening meal.
Not much - but £20 to park the car in a hotel car park would be expensive for a major tourist city and too expensive for Durham. We were a bit miffed that although we arrived a couple of hours after check in time, our room was not ready for us.
Location and the beautiful building. I left clothes in the wardrobe they posted back to me within a day.
Everyone was so friendly

The Hotel Indigo in Durham is set in a beautiful building with a fantastic location. The interior of the hotel is really lovely and full of interesting character. We booked a premier room with a bath. The room itself was spotlessly clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the air conditioning worked really well. It was also great to see plenty of tea and coffee provided in the room. There were just a couple of minor downsides. First, while the shower was great, they only provided one hand towel and two bath towels. Normally this is fine, but for a premier room at £350 a night, it felt a little stingy. Second, parking is quite expensive, whether you park on the street or use the hotel's parking. Overall, we had a great stay and I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Durham!
Ideal location for us, staff very friendly and helpful
-
My go to hotel while my daughter was studying in Durham, easy parking, great location, wonderful building, welcoming staff and very comfortable, plus excellent air conditioning
Beautiful space in a good location
Booked half board but had to pay much more as only à la carte offered
A great hotel in a great location. Lovely staff looked after us so well. The room was modern and so comfortable. A great stay!
One minor gripe - the eggs in my Eggs Benedict weren't runny. Not the end of the world! 🤣
We really enjoyed our 2 night stay. Location is perfect to visit the city centre. The hotel is beautiful! The historical communal areas are stunning. I beg to differ with the previous reviewer. Our standard room was very, very comfortable. The bed was excellent and we slept like logs! The room decor is quirky whilst still being modern. In the scorching weather the air con was very efficient as was the shower. Breakfasts were superb. I had two different drlicious gluten free breakfasts see my photos. I can't praise this hotel highly enough!

Excellent location, beautiful character building
An absolutely fantastic stay at Hotel Indigo. A beautiful hotel in the perfect location to explore Durham. The staff were superb, we were warmly welcomed and looked after incredibly well, the level of service throughout the hotel was fabulous. The breakfast was brilliant, the bar beautiful, the room perfect ( best shower I have ever used!). Air conditioning took care of the heat and we were extremely comfortable. Car parking is easy and the only thing (if anything ) is that it’s a little pricey at £20 per 24 hours, but much the same wherever you go. Highly recommended!
Nothing!
Fantastic location, gorgeous room, amazing breakfast
早餐美味,在古色古香的议事大厅,体验感超棒
All the staff we encountered were super helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent with a great selection of options. Really close to everything but quiet area.
