Seen so many good reports on the newly refurbished Swan and Royal. Well it was amazing. Firstly the staff are a credit to you. Keep them ! The food was great too. The cheese pie had cheese in it ! Now so many serve cheese pie with more potatoes and onions than the bland cheese they use. This was soooo tasty. Loved it. We all ate what we were given and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you 🙏 will definitely be back. Soon ! 😋 ❤️
We have eaten here a few times and the food and service has always been exceptional. Whether just having a drink or something to eat , you will always be served by professional , welcoming members of staff, especially Curtis . If you are looking for a warm place to enjoy a drink or something to eat , The Swan is definitely worth a visit and we highly recommend it . Andrew & Julie
After a recent refurb, the Swan and Royal looks amazing. The decor is very classy and inviting. It's no longer the karaoke bar that it used to be, now much more refined and serves fabulous food.
Great location in town, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was what you need it to be. Highly recommend!
Great meal at The Swan & Royal in Clitheroe tonight, it’s years since I have been in, someone told me it had been taken over by a young entrepreneur. Well I must say amazing fish & chips, clean batter and just the right amount of mushy peas. Loved it… my partner had cheese pie and he really enjoyed it, our friends had fish pie and said it was the best. Will definitely be calling back again and the bill was pleasantly surprising 😍
We were a party of 12 booked for a Saturday lunch. Food was exceptional as were the staff. The recent refurbishment is lovely, making the bar and restaurant very welcoming. Can definitely recommend, and will return.
Great food in a great place. The recent new management and refurb has turned this place around. Service was fast and friendly. Very easy to book a table on the website. Would recommend. Had the roast beef dinner. Excellent!
Had a lovely meal here on Saturday after Christmas. Pre ordered food and it was all perfect. Excellent staff very helpful Would defo recommend
Had a wonderful experience here, great Atmosphere and very friendly staff, we had a lovely waitress called Megan who was so bight and couldn't do enough for us, we definitely recommend
We called for a midweek lunch and were delighted to find the place was more or less full. The food was really tasty and it had generous sized portions. We last called many years ago and the new front of house décor was beautiful and had a cottage type/ country pub feel The staff were very friendly and very helpful. I can see that once again. The Swan and Royal is now back to its former glory and a very welcome addition to the main centre of Clitheroe for food and drink.
We went during a weekend away with siblings and partners. There were 6 of us in total. We arrived before 12, the young woman on front of house was lovely and welcoming. She seated us and informed us that they would be taking lunch orders from 12, which is no problem. They took our order at 11:30, and then we were informed that the person who took our order should not have done this. When the food arrived, it came out wrong, including a pie that should have been gluten free which was not. We asked to speak to the manager, who was very rude. She was dismissive of us and blamed it all on the staff who waited the table. These staff members were lovely and we cannot fault them. After this, we also heard the chef scream at the young man serving us, which is completely unprofessional, and also uncalled for, as he did not take our order. Would not recommend.
Friendly & welcoming staff; good breakfast after good night's rest; evening meals well cooked; pricing competitive & good value - room not the most modern but clean & comfortable.
Great spot on the high street for a tasty meal and a relaxed pint. The Swan and Royal has a welcoming feel and solid pub classics on the menu.
Lovely location, very helpful staff.
The staff were very helpful and ftiendly
We enjoyed our stay , nothing was too much trouble for the staff very nice and friendly
Lovely comfortable stay ,great value for money .fab breakfast and slept great .
3 of us went for dinner. My wifes pie was amazing, my steak was average, my friends Hunters Chicken had no chicken to speak of & was poor, so how do we rate them? Its a nice pub with pretty good service but with such a wide range of reviews within our party, the jury remains out.
Room very spacious but very dusty. Cobwebs all over windows and ceiling.
It's a beautiful building. They only have 2 rooms I think. So, was only me. I had my own bathroom. It's bigger then mine at home. The food is divine!!!! And it's like a 5 min walk from Clitheroe Castle!
10/10 Excellent property, Lovely host and staff, excellent memu and service, cosy warm bedroom
Disco until 01:00 !!! Even worse it was 70’s music (sic) !!!!!
Honestly a beautiful listed building, staff great, landlord such a nice bloke. Got there and a full bar with disco, which we knew about before we booked. We also planned to make the most of it. Amazing value for the central location. Carpark is a little tight but i was in a van. Breakfast was unbelievable and unbeatable for the selection and our complimentsto the chef and waitress fantastic service. We will definitely be going back.
Stay was very good, everyone was very friendly, comfortable bed and l had an excellent nights sleep.
Great location, friendly staff. Extremely helpful and very knowledgeable.
Staff was friendly food was great
We stayed gor 1 night & although the room was comfortable it needs to modernised. The bathroom needs decorating & modernising. The breakfast was fresh & very good.
Lovely old Pub/Hotel Good for short stay in Clitheroe.
Diddnt expect too much with a 7.6 rating , but our room would have struggled to achieve a 5 … Dirty room …dirty blinds stained toilet seat …wallpaper coming off ,windows single glazed so noisy from pub across the rd shower doors hanging off …. Good points were staff were nice and welcoming and the breakfast was great and very hot . But the cleanliness was unacceptable
I left after the first night. The flooring cracked with every step (old building) But could hear other residents moving around there rooms. The bedroom window was rattling all night because of wind. (Needs fixing). When turning over in bed I could hear the bed spring pinging. I will add that the new year's eve Disco was enjoyed.
New years eve stay, chose due to central location. Large room, plenty towels and hot shower. Would recommend as breakfast is available, and although we were at another venue for a party, food was served during the day/night.
Lovely pub grub, excellent disco, comfy bed. Room was cold on arrival but soon warmed up once we turned the radiator up. Lovely, comfortable stay
Called in on a Thursday afternoon. Very friendly staff. Really nice meals had by the four of us. Food was piping hot and arrived quickly. The steak pudding was both huge and excellent. The seafood pie was very good too! Would definitely recommend 👍
Extremely surprised to find this hidden gem of a hotel. Cited above an old pub oozing with character and history - nothing is level or plumb as was the original way of building - I bet the walls could tell some stories. Very clean and comfortable, warm and cozy. Prices good for town centre including breakfast which was also excellent.
Really nice place Bed rooms are great and the breakfast is definitely worth the price
All i needed for a 2 night stay whilst in Clitheroe for a friend’s wedding. Nice greeting on arrival and easy check in. I booked a double room but got given what looks like a family room. It was clean and I liked the fact I could go in and out the side door when pub was shut. There was a loud disco on Saturday night which I was warned about as I was in the room above it. It isn't a luxury hotel, but was perfect for my needs as I only slept in it after getting drunk at a friends wedding!
Staff were pleasant and accommodating. Large room, clean and tidy. Good shower. Good atmosphere in the bar area.
Good stop , convenient and good value
We was in Clitheroe doing a Treasure Trail and when we had finished it we decided to call into The Swan and Royal pub for a drink. After a two hour walking trail the pint of Kopperberg went down a treat. Whilst in there we thought we would get a bite to eat as well. The staff were really lovely and friendly, the man behind the bar told us the pie my Husband had ordered wasn’t available so he opted for the beef and onion hot baguette instead and a refund for the difference in meal prices was settled straightaway. I had the cajun chicken baguette. Both meals were piping hot and the baguettes came with chips and salad. Really lovely food, lovely staff what more could you want. I would highly recommend this pub if you are ever visiting Clitheroe and we will definitely call in again x
Bed comfortable, food excellent. Very narrow entrance to car park.
Lovely large room overlooking the main street and with a view of the castle. Very comfy bed with pristine white sheets. Room and bathroom not so clean. Toilet needed a good clean, shower curtain had black mould all across the bottom and the carpet in the room needed hoovering. Very dusty everywhere. That being said, we had a great stay and the location was perfect for our night out around the town
Thank you to the staff for the warm welcome, great service and a really lovely Sunday roast lunch. I’m totally stuffed but dessert was so good I couldn’t leave it ( spotted dick). I was with friends, we will be back! Great prices too so the whole afternoon was good value for money. We will be back for the Xmas menu.
Very good stay
Town centre hotel/pub. There was a disco the night I arrived but it didn’t go on late. Room was comfortable and clean but a little dated, however good value for the price and a nice full English breakfast
It was a bit worn and dated in the room. Furniture a bit scruffy. The kettle lid was all chipped and it was tricky to fill at the bathroom sink. The csrpets looked dusty round the edge and under the radiators. The floors very creaky and uneven. The bed was very uncomfortable and you could feel the springs in the mattress
Was disappointed when staying at swan and royal bathroom was dirty and old . We stayed in the Miss Whiplash room and the toilet was dirty round seat as where areas of the room which hadn't seen a hoover in weeks. The bed was clean but the room was so small we had to move things around in the room to access the dressing table. The breakfast was lovely and so was the lady that served us who seemed to be the overworked as she was not only the waitress, but was the hotel cleaner and was servicing the rooms as well. We ate in the pub on the first night. It was steak night, but we were told they had no steaks including steak pie as they were expecting a large pre-booked party. The food we had was okay. We saw no sign of a large party so asked the barman where the large party was that were having steaks only to told there was no large party only a table of four and the the real reason we couldn't have steaks or steak pies was that the chef was off ill and they hadn't ordered any. Would I stay there again, in all honesty probably not.
Really friendly staff.
Sat night there is a disco in the pub till 1.30am which makes it difficult to sleep. It can be heard from every room. Bar staff did not leave after shift; talking loudly in the pub until being asked to quieten down. Booked a single room. Bathroom had a leaky tap, brown extractor fan and window could not be opened. The decor was tired and the room could do with an overhaul.
A lovely old hotel with friendly staff
Nice hotel, rooms ok staff friendly and breakfast was nice.
The hotel is an old (19th century) so seems dated. The bed was creaky but the shower was fantastic. Food plentiful and if a good standard.
Great
The room smelled like someone had smoked in the room and the bathroom smelled of urine
Was a very pleasant stay , staff very friendly breakfast good value, would have liked 2 pillows.🤗
Historic pub with simple lodging available.
Very comfortable room; friendly staff; well prepared food - and impressive history and famous guests. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Really comfy bed, large room and great cooked breakfast
No breakfast available which we didnt know beforehand. Staff very friendly and helpful
Absolutely Outstanding and amazing weekend.rooms where good and fully functional Breakfast was really really good as are the 2 ladles who cook/served. All the staff are amaz. Would definitely return. The atmosphere was very good. Thank you all.
Being a small hotel is was pleasant and unique for the trip. The staff were very friendly even with the issues with our luggage. The breakfast was very good
All of the Staff were well trained in the Hospitality Trade. Terry has created a nice friendly atmosphere, including the local regular customers. The banter crossed over to all. You can tell that the business has come from a dedication to the business.
For a short over-night stay, ideal. Staff friendly & helpfull. Breakfast plentiful & varied.
We stayed in the Mrs. Whiplash room last weekend. The stuff in the pub was incredibly friendly but very busy. When we went into the room at first glance, everything looked fine. Very outdated but satisfactory. As I walked into the bathroom, I spotted Black mould around the bath on the tiles, dirt and the showerhead was caked in Black mould. There was also A big damp patch on the wall and ceiling. I didn’t want to bother the owners/staff as they were very busy. So I nipped the local supermarket and got bleach a bottle of disinfectant spray and some cleaning wipes. It took me less than 10 minutes to get the bathroom up to a standard that we felt we could use. But all in all an enjoyable stay
Good place to stay if in Clitheroe. Second time here and does the job.
Ok, so this place is old plus at the time the road was being dug up outside (should be done by now and didn't affect our stay). Greeting was perfect, shown to our large room. Bed very comfy, shower was good. Absolutly no complaints. Home cooked full english set us up for the day. Car park was fun getting in and out of, don't take a large car. Would recommend. Warning, butchers opposite and you WILL spend a lot on their wonderful sausages.
Excellent location. Staff were very welcoming, breakfast was excellent. Comfortable bed but the bathroom needed a refurb. Unfortunately there were road closures outside and it was very difficult to get to the car park. It is not easy to park if you have a large car as it’s tight to manoeuvre.
The stay was lovely. Staff were very helpful on arrival and it was very easy to check in. Only downside was I wish there was an option for a breakfast in the morning. However there was plenty of other options across the road.
The staff, sevice and location are brilliant and i regular visit anx will continue to do so in the future
The pub is in the centre of Clitheroe, so very handy for all the amenities nearby. The rooms are above the pub and they are very honest about the level of noise. You should expect. If you book a breakfast, you eat it in the pub, we weren’t shown any menu, so I don’t know if there was any choice other than what we had. Their car park at the back is very tight through an entrance tunnel that was tricky to negotiate. it’s also very small so I don’t think it would hold very many cars. We didn’t really speak to any staff other than on chec in but the room was well prepared and clean and very safe with its own entrance code that we created. We had no problems at all during our stay there. This was only one night. It was a Saturday, so the music is until 1 am which we knew so it was fine.
Amazing service, friendly staff, very welcoming delicious food
Very quaint pub with lovely fires, staff were lovely, room pleasant and very clean, really comfy bed. Food outstanding, the fish and chips were the best ive eaten
A super old property , warm bedroom , staff friendly , food great.
A little tied in places staff very friendly plenty of heating in bedroom, bathroom small but plenty of hot water, breakfast good,
Thank you very much for a fantastic experience. The cooked breakfast set me up perfectly for the days tasks ahead. The landlord was fantastic to talk to in the morning and got the fried bread just right!! Its perfectly situated in the centre of town to access all the local amenities.
My husband and I stopped off for lunch here on the way home from a trip over to Newcastle. We hadn’t got our dog with us , so we were able to try this pub. As usual the menu was what you expect of British pub food but we thought that we would try their specials as usually this involves a bit more care. I had the spicy chicken burger. On the positive note the chips that came with it were really good but the chicken was two thin, overcooked frozen strips wedged between 2 thick chunks of cheese on a soggy bottom half of a bun. They did appear to be understaffed which may explain why nobody checked that everything was alright with the meal but the concept of this was awful.
Very good service from staff and friendly atmosphere.
Called in the pub around lunch time for a drink, looked at the menu and decided to return for tea, which we did and thoroughly enjoyed it, servied freshly made and hot and good value for money. Appearances and be deceiving as the pub looks as it needs an update, but it is very clean and staff are friendly and polite I would imagine it does get busy at weekends it was Monday evening when we visited and it was nice and warm.
A very warm welcome and enjoyed delicious food throughout our stay.
Stayed at pub for Sweet Baboo gig, ten yard walk from gig back to bedroom ideal. Room a little dated but perfectly adequate.
Nice welcome, clean room, huge breakfast. Interesting connection to Churchill and the Whittle jet engine....I was in the Churchill Room, as Churchill had stayed here.
Very disappointing lack of response to my concern.
Friendly staff was informed of discos held on the Saturday and Sunday until 1am when booking. Pub did not do any food after 3pm on Saturday and Sunday which we didn’t know about so arriving after a 7 hour journey after 5pm was not the best news and of course everywhere we tried was booked!! The room was clean, basic but spacious and had a modern en-suite. Breakfast was £7.50 per person and was freshly cooked. Overall a lovely and good value stay. Thank you
Extremely friendly, helpful and made you feel welcomed. Excellent spot right in the centre and of the town. Good beers and food.
Well the last time we were in here was before Covid and we used to go regularly for pensioners special, good value and lovely staff, completely different experience today, we arrived ordered our food, unfortunately the power went off, not there fault but it was not handled well at all, I am going through bad times, nobody came for ages, we were jyst left there and we were starving, then a girl came walked right past us can only presume it was because we weren't regulars and was telling some ladies what had happened, if we had not overheard we wouldn't have known, then we asked for a refund we were starving we needed to go somewhere else, no urgency at all, totally dusgustef
Booking in was easy via the bar. The room was very clean and large, with a comfortable bed. The food was very good especially the breakfast. I would recommend a stay if you are visiting the area.
Friendly staff who made me feel welcome. Food was amazing. The only problem I had was parking my large in the car park but that didn’t affect my stay as long stay car park was a few minute’s walk away. I would highly recommend this hotel and definitely visit again.
huge room with one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in for a long time, beautiful crisp clean linen and towels, very helpful staff, the only reason I only gave stars for service was that the room had not been stocked with a spare toilet roll, but couldn't fault the staff. The hotel showed it's age, although clean and tastefully decorated, but it is a historic building, so if you want modern flashy decor, this i snot for you, but if you want a clean comfortable room at a sensible price, it was just that. One other caveat, the hotel car park is quite tight to get into, but should be ok unless you have a wider than standard car.
Really convenient centrally located hotel.
several visits now excellent pub and accommodation . great location . food brilliant . staff cant do enough for you . rooms large and well equipped we normally stop Saturday night so very busy with music so don't think you can have a quiet early night. but we enjoy the lively atmosphere will be back phil carole
We were in Clitheroe and wanted somewhere to eat. We came across The Swan & Royal and went in. Prices were reasonable, food was delicious and there was plenty of it. Good drink selection, I ended up having Old Rosie Rhubarb Cider which was on draught there. Service was also good, I personally couldn't fault it.
Really friendly and helpful staff. Nice room with everything you need supplied. Mattress was a bit too soft for my liking but otherwise a really great stay.
Good value for the money. en-suite bath welcome during warm spell traditional but tidy
Perfect location for Clitheroe centre. Very friendly staff and good quality food served
Greeted with a nice smiley friendly member of staff. Taken to room This is how it went. Big spacious ensuite room with wonderful Sash windows and two chairs to sit and watch hustle bustle of the street below. Lovely….... But..... Very dated with big dark furniture. Sash window in need of cleaning/scraping and doesn't lock. Double bed base kept parting so mattress dipped over night. However sheets were immaculate and big fluffy towels. Didn't really like the big bedspread on it. Radiator knob was broken off so blazing hot heat all night. Kept window open which I wasn't comfortable doing but necessary. We were given a fan which helped. Dust under all the chest of drawers etc, easily dealt with by pulling out. I did it and I'm 4`11. Cobwebs all over ceiling No bath mat untill second day which was given to us by a lovely friendly cleaner. But plenty of tea, coffee sugar and milks. All in all its great for a central stay to hit the 8/10 pubs in village and visit the castle. Lots of local shops also. Down side it really needs work doing but a lovely historical building with some interesting facts and some famous people have stayed there. The owner met us as we left and was very apologetic that we weren't moved but if you want a cheap stay in centre choice is yours
Staff are very friendly. Room was lovely. Food is very good. Will be back.
Staff very helpful and room was great , good breakfast and really enjoyed our stay , only thing was the soap and shower gel dispensers were empty but not a big problem, would stay again
Excellent food and wine. and friendly staff. The food is well prepared and there is more than ample on your plate. The pub is very clean and tidy. If you're in Clitheroe this is the place to eat. It was an excellent find on our day out.
Brilliant lovely place
Excellent value for money. Lovely people
Very good reception, clean, comfortable. Excellent staff. I only had breakfast, but one of the best I have had! Despite what it says on line there is a small car park at the back of the hotel.
