Location is great, the building is historic. Beach is the real selling point to the property. The stores in the hotel are all of one kind (tacky boutiques) and the in hotel food options are expensive and pretty limited.
The hotel is dirty and dated. The price of our stay, you would expect more quality and better staffing - people were nice but didn't really go up and beyond. We asked for a later departure -- asked well before coming to the hotel, to no avail... oh well. The gym facilities are a joke -- Motel 6 has better on site exercise rooms.
The location is amazing. You are on the beach, have a pool and right on the main road where all the action is. The rooms were big.
1. The pool was always dirty. Each day there would be dirt floating in it!! 2. They were doing a renevation AND RHEY NEVER TOLD US when I called Marriott to book. 3. Lying at the pool was a nightmare!! Constant drilling and jackhammering... WOW 4. THE WATER IN THE SHOWER WAS LUKE WARM AT BEST! And there was so little pressure. 5. Not something we never knew, but being on the sea with a tiny little window thay yoi cant really see the beutiful view from the bed, is a waste, almost all other hotels have floor to ceiling windows so you are constantly looking at the amazing view. 6. First room we were given had ants all over it, so they upgraded us and moved us. When we checked out we were charged the higher rate !!! Really wasted our time in trying to sort this out, but we did. 7. Restaurant we went to for breakfast, food average and service the worst ee had in 8 days in Hawaii. I would definitely not stay here
Hotel looks fabulous and has history. The location in Waikiki is superb for shopping, dining and beach. The cocktail bar Mai Tai has live music and a great view and drinks. The bed was very comfortable and the whole hotel has a classic Hawaiian feel.
The staff come across as very “cool” and never offer assistance or generally go out of their way at all. For example on check out - no one offers help with bags or asks you about your stay. Beach chairs and sun loungers are charged extra for guests. The pool is too small for a 5* hotel. The bathroom in the bedroom is far too small. The room is serviced once a day - unusual for a 5* hotel at this cost. Small things like cracks in hotel room wall - needs better upkeep of the property.
Tout magnifique le jardin autour
Restaurant et petit déjeuner médiocre
Camas maravilhosas!
Andava muito para chegar nos quartos
The pink colour is beautiful and the location is amazing. Lots of big Banyan Trees
The rooms were quite standard and don’t reflect the price
location.
pool chairs were always taken. no afternoon turn down service. room was not cleaned up to standard.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay at The Royal Hawaiian. The location is unbeatable, with easy access to Waikiki Beach, great shopping, and plenty of restaurants. The food was delicious, the hotel itself is beautiful, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.
The only disappointment was our room. We booked an ocean-view room, but the ocean was barely visible because it was mostly blocked by other buildings. Since we paid extra for an ocean-view room, we expected a much better view, so this was quite disappointing.
The Royal Hawaiian remains my favourite hotel in Waikīkī. The setting is unmatched. The Mailani Tower oceanfront rooms are beautiful, the pool is intimate and peaceful, and the beachfront location remains one of the best in Hawaii. What concerns me is the gradual loss of amenities and experience at a time when prices continue to rise. Even a few years ago, staying here felt different. We felt genuinely special and part of the Royal Hawaiian 'ohana. The Mailani experience, the personal touches, the beautiful Mālie amenities with the Hawaiian-inspired Kōkeʻe fragrance, and the sense of connection to the hotel's history and culture made the experience unique. Today, many of those touches seem to have disappeared. Mailani benefits have been reduced, amenities have changed, cabana pricing has increased dramatically, and some service touches appear to have been scaled back. Individually these may seem minor. Collectively they change the character of the experience. The Royal Hawaiian is still a wonderful hotel, but it increasingly feels as though guests are paying more while receiving less of what once made the property so distinctive. As the hotel approaches its centennial, I would genuinely welcome a response from management. What is the vision for the Royal Hawaiian experience today? How does the hotel plan to preserve the sense of place, hospitality, and 'ohana that made so many guests fall in love with it in the first place? I still return because the property remains magical. My concern is that the feeling of being part of the Royal Hawaiian family is gradually being lost.
The room was old but beautiful and was right on the beach at Waikiki. The pool was tiny, but we could use the Sheraton pool next door.
I had a necklace taken from the side drawer in my room. We reported it but they don't feel they were responsible.
While this is an iconic Waikiki institution with a beautiful exterior, that’s really all it has to offer. It is the type of hotel that will take as much as it can from you while delivering as little as possible. The rooms are old and tired and the beds extremely worn and uncomfortable. The food is sub par with little to no service. The hotel does sit right on Waikiki beach, but there were so many homeless people directly in front of the hotel sleeping on the beach it was surprising. I understand the beach is not “private,” but for a hotel that touts itself as “five star” and prides itself on its location this should not be the standard. I will truly never understand why anyone would return to this hotel. They would be wise to shut it down and do a complete remodel to make it somewhat worth the price they charge. Based on the previous reviews I didn’t expect a lot but even less was delivered. Go elsewhere…and it takes a lot for me to say that.
I love the hotel and always stay there however the hotel needs a refresh. Lobby carpets need a good clean or refresh. I would like to get a chair poolside but that is not possible unless you book in advance. Dining options are very limited. Long, long line to lunch venue and NO in-room dining! I wanted to spend a relaxing day in the room and getting room service, forget it! Hotel rooms need a good clean as well - too much dust - and more outlets! Checkout is always an issue in Hawaii. Early checkouts and late flights. The Royal Hawaiian has a hospitality suite but you can only access it for an hour???? What is the purpose? Finally, I stayed at the hotel through the 4th of July. City fireworks display was lame and only lasted TEN minutes. Very easy to see display from the hotel but there was zero security. Anyone could walk through the lobby and hotel. Check out hotels in Las Vegas. At night, people should have to show their room key to access the property.

If you want Luxury with the BEST location on Wakiki Beach, this place is for you! This is our favorite resort on Wakiki Beach! We have stayed here so many times and each time it lives up to our expectations. We stayed in the historic building this time and loved our beautiful room. We did receive upgrade and late check out as part of my titanium benefits. We did the breakfast upgrade and that worked out great also. The staff were all so friendly. We will be checking in again this coming Friday. Thank you Stephanie for taking such good care of us!
My family of three just returned from a week at the Royal Hawaiian. and here's the breakdown: So, over all this is a great hotel. The location can't be beat. It is not only in the heart of Waikiki, but it has the best spot on the beach. In addition, the grounds are lovely and give you the impression that you're not surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We had a junior suite which was perfect for our family of three. The suite was spacious enough and made us feel like we weren't on top of each other. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were horrible. Wafer thin !!! I had to fold my pillow to feel like I had any support. We requested extra pillows, but they were just as thin. The biggest downside to the hotel is the bathrooms. They are tiny. There is no way two people can be in the bathroom doing anything at the same time. Small mirror, no counter space, no storage. One of the phones in our room also didn't work (we got a busy signal no matter who we called). Luckly, we had a second phone that worked. The staff- nobody was blatantly rude, but there are definitely some that give the impression that they don't really care. *The poolside service was very good. *The wait staff at breakfast was good but the host staff was clearly just trying to get through the day. * Bell staff was polite and efficient. *House keeping was always done well, but there were several times we passed them in the hall and were not acknowledged. *Front desk staff- very hit and miss. This is where I really noticed the lack of hospitality. Some front desk staff just weren't friendly or helpful (not a happy or friendly greeting, no smile). We had a problem with our toilet not flushing well and tried to call for somebody to take a look at it and our phone would only get a busy signal. So, I went to the front desk and was not greeted in a friendly manner. I explained what I needed and was told somebody would be up soon. After a couple of hours we called the front desk (on the phone that worked in our room) and eventually somebody was sent to our room and fixed the toilet. *Gym was tiny and not well appointed. *Pool is tiny and if you're not down at 7am to put a towel on a chair, you're not going to get one until later in the afternoon when people start to leave. So overall this is a very nice hotel but lacks certain things that a five-star hotel should have. I get the small bathrooms and pool because it is a historic hotel. But the staff issues are 100% correctable and most likely a reflection of supervision/management.
The Royal Hawaiian was so much nicer than expected. It is a beautiful pink oasis in the midst of chaotic Waikiki. The staff was so very helpful, our room was larger than anticipated and had a gorgeous view. Our room even had a Toto bidet toilet, which we miss when we are traveling. I'd stay here again just because of that! Great location on the beach. We rented a chaise set up one day and had such a nice time people watching and wading into the ocean. You can walk to all the other nice hotels, but in my opinion, the Royal Hawaiian can't be beat.
After more than 20 years of staying at the Royal Hawaiian twice a year, this may finally be the visit that makes us reconsider returning. Our current stay began on July 16, and unfortunately the experience has been disappointing from the moment we arrived. We requested an early check-in, but after waiting more than three hours, our room still wasn’t ready. There was little communication or empathy from the front desk throughout the process. The front desk has consistently lacked the warmth and genuine hospitality you would expect from one of Hawaii’s most iconic hotels. The interactions often feel mechanical rather than welcoming, which is disappointing considering the hotel’s reputation for aloha. As Marriott Bonvoy members, we request two beds for every stay, yet our preference is rarely honored despite years of repeat visits. Our most concerning experience occurred during our April 2026 visit, when my daughter woke up around 9:30 p.m. to find a large cockroach crawling on the bed. Staff came to remove it after we called, but there was no apology, no follow-up, and no attempt to recover the experience. After that trip, I wrote directly to hotel management. I never received a reply. We’ve continued to choose this hotel because of its history, location, and sentimental value, but loyal guests should feel appreciated. Instead, we’ve repeatedly felt overlooked. The Royal Hawaiian remains a beautiful property, but beautiful scenery cannot replace genuine customer service, attention to guest concerns, and respect for loyal customers. I hope management takes reviews like this seriously because this hotel has the potential to provide an experience worthy of its reputation.
Old world charm and location
For a 5 star hotel it has a lousy excuse for a swimming pool. It has a 3 star gymnasium. The property is unable to accommodate the outdoor demands of guests during busy periods. We could never get a chair outside near pool or beach for our 10 day stay.
Strongly advise against staying at this hotel. My beach bag was stolen from the pool area, the check in was a disaster, and the room was dated. Upon checking in, we discovered there was a leak coming from the toilet. Second, the manager Benjamin refused to honor our guaranteed upgrade. Lastly, on day two, my beach bag was stolen and they refused to check the security camera even after reporting within hour of last seeing it. I should have went with my first instinct and stayed at the Four Seasons. However, i would like to recognize the servers, bartenders, and housekeeping, they were exceptional and work so hard to ensure a positive experience.
Lokalizacja
We went to the ocean-front pool for breakfast /brunch. The atmosphere was great. The bartender was friendly and the drinks and food were great.
Ready for some surf and sand? Then you have arrived at a premier destination! The Royal Hawaiian sits right on Waikiki Beach and features 2 astounding restaurants and a Mai Tai bar. Not only is the staff attentive and pleasant, they go out of their way to ensure you are enjoying the most that the area has to offer. You want for nothing during your stay as anything you may have neglected to pack is already in your room or a quick phone call away. The hotel is also convenient to area attractions and walking about town is a stroll through paradise. While the pace feels leisurely, there is a vibrant energy that runs through the hotel and adjacent shopping center. I highly recommend for travel with family and friends.
Great property! Nice room, comfortable beds and pillows. Nice bathroom. Staff was wonderful! Nice beach.
My room was great. The hotel inside and out is beautiful.
The bar had terrible food and not so great drinks. We ended up just drinking the Hawaiian beer on tap and that was good. Nobody ever came to take my drink order while at the pool and I had to go to the bar to get our drinks. The worst thing about the hotel was the coffee and waiting in lines to get a bad cup of coffee. I feel a luxury hotel should offer coffee free in the lobby to their guests. I never felt that having the pink wristband offered me anything. I understand there are lots of people wandering through the lobby and hotel grounds and the hotel doesn't want to offer free coffee to people not staying at the hotel. Why give us the pink hotel bands? Oh, I know, that's for the honor of reserving an umbrella with chaise on the beach. However, to reserve an umbrella with chaise, I must stand in a line. Just like the coffee. This is a beautiful place and I love old hotels but this is not luxury when I must be in line by 7am to reserve a chaise or get a cup of coffee. People who stay in luxury hotels DO NOT want this kind of experience.
Elegant and timeless. I love everything about the hotel— except the small pool. But you are right on Waikiki beach and you can use the Sheraton pool too
We were guests in a 2 double premier ocean view room in the Mailani Tower on June 3 thru June 5, 2026. The room was lovely, the view from the balcony was spectacular. Comfortable mattresses, spacious bathroom, and an unusually large balcony (lanai.) The pool was small and yet still charming. Actually the pool size didn't matter because Royal Hawaiian guests have access to the Sheraton's large pool playground. And frankly we weren't there for the pool, we were there for... the beach. There are 2 reasons that the Royal Hawaiian is such a special and unique hotel: 1) the proximity to the beach. The vast majority of the hotels in Waikiki are across the street from the beach, whereas the Royal Hawaiian is right next to the sand. 2) the gardens. This may seem like an unimportant detail, because most people (myself included!) don't pick their hotel because of pretty flowers. But the landscaping is what sets this hotel apart from every other Waikiki hotel. Once you arrive at the Royal Hawaiian, you're no longer in urban downtown Honolulu. You step out of a big city and into a pink Moroccan palace inside a lush tropical rain forest filled with singing birds and enormous trees and exotic plants. It's tranquil and beautiful. You're walking into a surreal dream that's genuinely awe-inspiring. It's all an illusion, of course, because actually you ARE in a big city full of the traffic and noise that every big city has. Nevertheless, the illusion is convincing and satisfying, entirely because of the architecture and the gorgeous gardens. Finally, a word about the service. Every employee we encountered was friendly and professional. We never had any problems with the staff, everyone delivered great customer service. In particular we were especially impressed with Dana, a server at the Mai Tai Bar. We dined at the Mai Tai Bar twice, and the second time there was an unpleasant situation that was entirely our fault. Dana helped us solve this problem, even though it was not easy to solve. She handled the situation perfectly and we appreciate her efforts.
Lokalizacja najlepsza.
I bym zamówiła.

The Royal Hawaiian may have become my favorite hotel I’ve ever stayed at. From the moment we arrived, it was clear why this iconic resort is known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific.” The property is absolutely stunning, blending historic charm with modern comfort in a way that feels both elegant and welcoming. What stood out most during our stay was the attention to detail. Every corner of the property felt thoughtfully cared for—from the immaculate grounds to the beautiful architecture and common spaces. The lush tropical foliage was incredible, with vibrant plants, towering palms, and colorful flowers creating picture-perfect views at every turn. It truly felt like an oasis in the heart of Waikīkī. The staff were exceptional throughout our stay. Everyone we encountered was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely seemed to care about making our experience memorable. That level of hospitality elevated an already beautiful property into something truly special. The beachfront location is hard to beat. The beach area was well maintained and offered stunning views of Diamond Head and the turquoise waters of Waikīkī. Whether relaxing on the sand or simply taking in the scenery, it was the perfect place to unwind. We also spent time at the pool in the evenings and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The pool area was beautiful, clean, and relaxing, providing a great place to unwind after a day of exploring while still being just steps from the beach. One of our favorite spots on the property was the Mai Tai Bar. The cocktails were excellent, and the food was delicious. Portions were on the smaller side, but the quality and oceanfront setting made it one of our favorite places to grab lunch and drinks during the day. I would be remiss not to mention one issue that occurred during our stay. My parents discovered multiple roaches in their room after returning from dinner one evening. After finding several insects within a short period of time, they contacted the front desk. To the hotel’s credit, the staff responded quickly and moved them to a different room that same night. We were very satisfied with how promptly and professionally the situation was handled. That said, because their original room was only a few doors down from ours, I noticed new guests checking into that same room the following day. While I can’t speak to their experience or what treatment may have been performed, it did leave me wondering whether enough time had passed to fully address the issue. Even with that concern, our overall experience at The Royal Hawaiian was outstanding. The incredible service, breathtaking grounds, beautiful beachfront setting, and attention to detail throughout the property made this a stay we’ll remember for years to come. The Royal Hawaiian delivers more than just a place to sleep—it delivers an experience. For us, it was one of those rare hotels that feels every bit as special as its reputation suggests. Would I stay again? Absolutely.
My 4th trip to the Pink Palace. I always love staying here, and will come back but have a few notes for the future. 1. The resort fee : I wish there were more amenities that I could use like a hot coffee bar in the morning, a beach umbrella for a day etc included in the resort fee. It is a hefty price, and I don’t necessarily care for the activities. I would love to get more value for $62 a day - which is essentially a meal ( and one I don’t get to choose ). 2. Room service would be great ! Being able to order hot coffee and breakfast vs. standing in line etc. same with the pool service, at the to go line I waited for 15 minutes and was never served. The food options are limited ; I wish there was another quick option without leaving the property. Otherwise everything else was great. I know the property is having renovations done and I look forward to seeing them the next time I arrive.
We liked the location and the staff. We arrived at the hotel in the morning due to an early flight to Oahu and they accommodated our request for a very early check-in.
We were very unhappy that there was no room service and no 24 hour places to get any type of food or drinks or coffee without leaving the hotel. Their bakery closes at 12 noon which is totally unacceptable for a luxury rated hotel. The restaurants disappointed us so we are most of our meals outside of the hotel.
We recently stayed for a long weekend and honestly wished we could have extended the trip. From check-in through departure, the experience was exceptionally well done. The front desk team went out of their way to make us feel welcome, taking the time to ask thoughtful questions about our room preferences, views, floor, and layout to find the best fit. That level of care and personalization is rare and felt much more comparable to a true luxury property such as a Rosewood or Four Seasons than a typical large resort hotel. That same attention to detail carried throughout the stay, and it was clear the staff genuinely cared about the guest experience. As for the property itself, while it is an older resort, it is impeccably maintained and visually stunning. The large pink main building set against the beach and ocean creates an unforgettable setting. One especially unique feature—something really only found in classic grand hotels—is the abundance of spacious, varied sitting areas, lounges, courtyards, and quiet gathering spaces throughout the property. There are so many comfortable places to relax that the hotel almost feels like a destination in itself. It is honestly difficult to fully describe and really has to be experienced in person to appreciate. We attended the luau during our visit and there was a minor issue with the reservation. These things happen anywhere, but what matters is how they are handled. The staff addressed it professionally and graciously, invited us to relax with a drink while they sorted things out, and quickly accommodated us. We ended up having a wonderful evening. Breakfast each morning in the main restaurant was another highlight. The service was not only prompt and professional, but genuinely warm and friendly. Everyone seemed sincerely invested in making guests feel welcome, which unfortunately has become increasingly rare even at high-end properties. Even housekeeping stood out, always greeting us warmly and adding thoughtful touches during turndown service. One particularly memorable example of hospitality came from a bartender at the outdoor bar who took the time to recommend a nearby lounge that would suit both my interests and my wife’s preferences perfectly. The recommendation ended up being excellent and reflected a level of attentiveness and personal engagement that defines true hospitality. We spend a considerable amount of time in hotels and resorts, and this property stands out as one of the very few large-chain hotels we have visited in the past decade that genuinely delivers exceptional service consistently across the board. Credit is due not only to the employees, but also to management for clearly fostering and maintaining that culture of hospitality. We truly cannot think of anything the hotel could have done better. Thank you for a wonderful end to our vacation.

Would definitely stay somewhere else. Absolutely beautiful property and lobby and wonderful location but the rooms seem to have been forgotten. The only upside are the beds, as those are comfortable. I have stayed in hotels ranging from a motel 6 to the Ritz Carlton and Fairmont hotels. The rooms here are definitely at a best western/two star hotel standard. There wasn’t a single towel when we arrived and the towels they gave us are super thin and scratchy. Very outdated, small, and cheaply designed. The number one reason I wouldn’t stay here again though is because THE WALLS ARE EXTREMELY THIN. We can hear everything our neighbors are saying and we were woken at 6 am to the screaming kids next door. They continued to scream and bang on things for the next hour. Really, we can hear everything they are doing. For reference, we are staying in the tower with an ocean view room with lanai.
The property is beautiful and historic, which we appreciated.
Most importantly, at the end of our stay, when we checked out we were shocked to know that we were over charged and incorrectly charged for our room. We had paid in full to Booking.com for our stay, so we found this experience upsetting.
We picked this resort specifically so we could stay in the historic wing. The ocean view historic room we booked wasn’t available at check in, so they upgraded us to the tower instead. At the time I didn’t really care because I was tired and thought ok maybe the balcony and higher floor will be nice. But omg room 1706 was not an upgrade at all. Yes, the views were amazing. But the room itself felt pretty dated, the mattress had a huge dip in it, and despite being on the top floor it didn’t even have a real balcony — just sliding doors. Later when I was at the pool looking up at the tower, I realized this must be one of the few tower rooms without an actual balcony. The real issue though was the noise. There was this insanely loud vibrating/drilling sound that came and went intermittently throughout the day and night. It was SO loud. Was it the AC? Construction? A ghost? I honestly don’t know and neither did the engineer. Eventually they explained that the winds can cause vibrations on the upper floors. Whatever it was, by day three I genuinely couldn’t take it anymore. We finally moved to a historic wing ocean view room and omg it was better in every single way. The room actually felt special and like the reason you stay at the Royal Hawaiian in the first place. The windows overlooking the beach looked like a literal postcard. I just wish we had spent the whole trip there instead. I honestly do not understand staying in a tower room at this resort. There are so many other hotels in Waikiki in the same price range that are towers but with nicer rooms and actual balconies. The entire point of staying here is the historic room!! Other than that though, the resort itself is beautiful. It’s on the nicest beach, the location is great, and everything is super walkable. The drinks were delicious and the food was actually pretty good (for Hawaii). The pink pancakes at breakfast were cute but also like… $30. We had dinner at another resort nearby that looked much nicer but the food was terrible in comparison. It is expensive though. Even coming from San Francisco, I had sticker shock a few times. The service ranged from super friendly to kind of surly. I honestly don’t care if staff are overly warm as long as I’m getting what I paid for, which is why it annoyed me that nobody really offered much of a solution when we kept asking about the noise issue (not even earplugs.) To be fair though, our server at Azure was sooo nice and the pool drink service was really fast. Also, I have no idea what other reviewers are talking about with waiting forever for umbrellas or breakfast. We asked for a beach umbrella around 9:30am and got one immediately. And the pool is small, but that’s very obvious from the website photos. I prefer Maui or Kauai overall, but if I ever end up staying in Waikiki again I’d probably stay here again — but historic wing only.
You can't put lipstick on a pig. the outside beautiful. inside ? well the rooms are all dated worn and broken. I thought why not splurge and stay here? at 1000 a night the and I toured 4 different rooms, were dark dingy, broken plugs, lamps furniture not all there stained if they were there. the worst pillows and bedding I have even seen. the pillows were flat like pancakes and smelled so bad I had to put 2 towels on them to sleep. immediately got up next morning alarm went off at 5 am couldn't unplug it. .and checked out and went to the ritz Carlton. the only thing good about this hotel is location. its nothing better than a motel 6 now. I have stayed here many times and it keeps gg down the toilet. Moana Surfrider , clean as a whistle ritz is also all three are Marriot.
Did not stay here this visit but will FOR SURE next time. Best Mai Tai in Waikiki. Pink pancakes are worth it! Classy, beautiful hotel with excellent sitting areas and vibe
1992 quality room. Tiny. Paid extra for a “high floor“ and got put on the 10th floor of 17. Literally a $150 a night quality hotel room for $1,100 per night. I couldn’t care less about the view or how extravagant the “grounds“ are. The bathroom was old, weird, and painfully basic. Yes. A 1992 shower-tub with a cheap curtain and little magnets at the bottom. Not even a proper shower head. Only a hand held. The towels were hard from over bleaching. The rooms were old and tiny. I get it. You’re in Hawaii. But have a little pride in your product. You can afford it. You’re getting overpaid by like 10x every single night. By every single guest. I get that 90% of Honolulu hasn’t been updated since the 1960s, but at this price point, you guys have no excuse to be delivering a room that looks like this. And this tiny.
The location was great. Staff were friendly and helpful
The price for the facilities offered was limited.
Расположение, красивая зеленая территория, хороший сервис
Очередь утром на завтраки
We had a 2 week vacation in Hawaii. One week was in hotels we split the hotel stay between the Royal Hawaiian and a hotel next door. The other hotel charged us 3 times as much as the Royal. Unfortunately it wasn’t even close to the amenities the Royal had. It was a memorable stay.
Suite was very nice, location is excellent and the gardens are gourgeous
Overall property Maintenance, cleanliness and amount of Events impacting the guest Services
The hotel is located in the heart of Waikiki and our room, being an end unit had a full view of Waikiki beach.
We had a very difficult time checking in despite providing a confirmed reservation number. For the price, the room decor and furnishings are sadly dated/worn and not considered luxury. No slippers were provided and the toiletries provided were basically generic and not of luxurious grade.
Let me add my voice to the other 3-star reviews of this supposedly 5-star hotel. We stayed for three nights in a one bedroom suite in the historic wing as a stopover from the mainland to Big Island. Pros: - ideal Waikiki location - one of the few vestiges of "Old Waikiki" - public spaces charming, especially gardens (yoga) - suite roomy ~ 900 sq ft So why only three stars? Well, checking into the room was disappointing. In the bathroom we found a dirty bathrobe & bra, so we had to wait for housekeeping to fix that. Then room service - or not. No room service at this property. The walls are thin enough to hear the talking and snoring next door. And then come all the niggling things that make this less than Luxury: a small pool which closes at 6pm because...? Dining options are limited and menus are heavily weight to fried food. Notepad books in rooms with no paper or pens. No breakfast options at 10:31 am. Juliet balconies instead of a real balconies. No microwave in the room. And the final insult from a five-star property. As the comedienne said, "what's happened to the toilet paper btw in public bathrooms, anyway? It's not even one-ply any more, is it? it's a sheer suggeston of what toilet paper used to be ... Innuedo ... a ghost … think proscuitto". We won't be staying here on our next trip to Honolulu.
We loved the Royal Hawaiian. Very clean, beautiful property. We parked the rental car and rarely needed. Everything was just a few minutes walk from the hotel. All employees were so nice—valet staff, front desk staff, housekeepers, servers. It was a really nice experience. Loved the rocking chairs and open-air parts of this beautiful hotel. Loved the food at Mai Tai. Room was clean, bed comfortable. We would recommend to anyone traveling to this area.
This is a beautiful hotel with tremendous character at almost 100 years old. We had an exceptional experience for our anniversary and my wife’s birthday. Entire staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially 3 employees. First, Billy, the bar manager, greeted us with complimentary drinks; then Stephanie, a Concierge manager, provided beautiful flowers in our room and called us to see if we were happy with our experience. Finally, Elsa, our wonderful housekeeper, went above and beyond to take care of us, providing a card and amenities in our room. FANTASTIC!!!!!
It started with great bell service and front desk service. No complaints on those departments. Things went downhill quickly this point forward. We waited at a table in the Mai Tai for 10 minutes to acknowledge. No acknowledgment after sitting and watching 6 servers walk by with no acknowledgment. Finally caught a server’s attention to see if it was his table, sadly it wasn’t. However, he did step up, take our order and shortly afterwards, our server made an appearance. We left the Mai Tai and headed back to our room to change for sometime by the pool. We lucked up and got chaise lounges to relax. We were there at the pool from 2-5. Not once did the server stop and ask if we’d like to order anything. Her attention was solely focused on the cabanas near us and no one else. We left the pool to head to our room to come back to only one robe in the closet still. Our bellman, earlier from arrival, made certain to note this missing robe to have another delivered to the room and he was very attentive at filling our ice bucket, explaining the waters on the daily request. We were gone for 3 hours and no robe upon return to our room. Called guest service and housekeeping came by with another robe for the 2 of us. Left for dinner to return to our room at 8pm and no turn down service to our room. With that being the final straw of the day, I chose to sleep on everything and discuss it the next morning with the morning MOD, April 16, 2026. Your MOD listened to these occurrences from the previous day, which by the way was my birthday, and offered a guest coffee credit. As I explained to him, this was not my first time staying at the Royal Hawaiian and I know these occurrences of events are not regular happenings. I also informed him that my friend with me, was her first stay. I wasn’t wanting anything from him other than hearing about the short comings of the previous day. I wanted him to pass the information onto the manger’s of each department to rectify all the above. The MOD asked when we’d like turn down service for the 16th and we responded with 7:30pm. Needless to say, we didn’t get turn down again. I feel as though the lack of service didn’t constitute the price I paid for our room. I have already cancelled my next stay with the Royal Hawaiian that was due in September 2026. It’s the little things that add up and it’s what makes me not want to return to be disappointed. I chose to stay at the Royal Hawaiian my past 5 stays while on Oahu, now I will choose to go somewhere else. I was looking forward to sharing the Royal Hawaiian with my friend in hopes that she would come back to stay again. However, I seriously doubt that she or myself will be returning to the subpar standards. Truly unfortunate with the 100th anniversary coming in January 2027. Thank you, Cheryl Jordan
The location and parking onsite, as well as, the sea view.
I thought the room details a bit poor considering the money spent, however, the sea view is amazing and the resort has a good structure and breakfast included. The other point to highlight is the parking paid aside.
My family stayed here from April 4 to April 11, 2006, in rooms 602 and 603. We arrived at around noon on that first Saturday and were able to check in at around 1:30 PM. We were given 2 cards for complimentary banana muffins from their bakery and the receptionist had a couple extra boxes with her that she passed to us while we waited. My family loved them! We have stayed at this hotel a few times in the past and have loved every visit so we keep coming back. The location in the heart of Waikiki is perfect. We go with my mother-in law and father-in-law who aren't into spending time at the pool or beach and they are able to head out on their own to shops and restaurants while my wife and I take our 12 and 9 year old to the pools and the beach. At other resorts across Hawaii we aren't able to do this and we feel that my in laws might get bored at more remote locations so this location is perfect. We stayed in the main historic building and I love the vaulted ceilings in the rooms and the decor. Room 602 gave us a little more bathroom space than we've gotten in the past which was nice as that's the main drawback of staying in a hotel that is 100 years old. I'm sure that the tower building has more bathroom space and we'll probably try a room there sometime as it would also be nice to have a balcony. But we love the history and character of the main building and I end up booking rooms there every time. We've gotten a junior suite in the past but the basic room was able to handle four of us in one room this trip. It rained a bit on our last few days and the hotel had umbrellas that they handed out to stay dry. The islands have been receiving a ton of rain lately so on this trip we stayed closer to the hotel in Waikiki and still had a great time. Fortunately/unfortunately my wife and daughters love to shop and there are tons of options within walking distance. We loved the Cirque du Soleil show 'Auana which was right across the street and the Rock a Hula show that was nearby at the Royal Hawaiian Center. We drove 25 minutes to visit the Experience Nutridge Luau which we also enjoyed. We self-parked our rental car at the Sheraton/Royal Hawaiian parking structure and it was easy to get in and out. We're already looking forward to our return visit to the Royal Hawaiian in a couple years. Everyone here is always so kind and welcoming. It is definitely our favorite hotel on Oahu.
Our stay at the Royal Hawaiian was amazing. The property is nothing short of spectacular. The first impression on arrival was very cool. It’s hidden behind modern buildings that reveal this absolute gem of a place as you pass through the historic gates and through the gorgeous front lawn. The service was first rate and our ocean view room on the 15th floor of the tower was perfect. Breakfast at Surf Lanai each morning was really good and the tropical drinks from the bar in the evening were delicious. You can’t get a better place to stay on Waikiki Beach than the Royal Hawaiian. It’s the perfect location for the beach, shopping, dining, and relaxing.
Another great stay. Louise at the front desk went out of her way to make it extra special. We love the location for our family. While a larger resort may feel a little more happening for (older) kids at night, the location just off Kalakaua in the heart of Waikiki gives us access to everything. The hotel is a perfect break from all the action - anytime we want a little peace and quiet or to get away from the crowds, it's just steps back to the hotel. Lots of other reviews offer insight into what to know about the hotel, the area and making the most of your stay, but my #1 piece of advice is to plan your beach/pool seating ahead of time. Meaning, reserve your beach chairs with Waikiki Beach Services (either brown or pink umbrellas), reserve a cabana at RH, or use your hotel access to reserve spots at the Sheraton (young kids like that pool) -- all ahead of time. It's never been crazy competitive where you need to book when reservations open up - just advice to look into this BEFORE you arrive, and I recommend sooner vs. later. It'll make your stay that much more enjoyable. Over the years, that's the self-optimization we've made to make our trips to the RH more enjoyable.
ジュニアスイートを予約していたが、スイートにグレードアップしてくれた。 嵐に見舞われたホノルル旅行でしたが、部屋でゆっくり過ごすことができました。
First Impressions: The original architecture is gorgeous. Stunning Porte Cochere and elegant entry with a covered terrace looking into a court yard garden. Entering into the hotel you feel transported to another time in a cloister away from the hustle/bustle of downtown Waikiki. The hotel has an old school feel to which we were drawn. Check In: The staff at the front desk gracious. The pink wrist band key—brilliant. Up the elevator in the historic wing to our 6th floor room. Hit in the hallway with the cloying synthetic scent of gardenia—-a diffuser spotted by the elevator bank—migraine alert—skin starts to burn—-not a good sign. Completely UNNECESSARY with clean ocean breezes wafting thru hotel!! Thankfully the hotel, after I complained, was successful temporarily pausing the fragrance dispenser on our floor. The door to the room—gorgeous original carved. Thank goodness preserved. The spacious room has an epic view of the ocean. The room furnishings which I did not immediately appreciate have grown on me as my eye has adjusted to the dark browns, greens, beige and pops of pink. The Frette pink robes and the complimentary pink water bottles are very appreciated! The bathroom is a little lacking and really needs two sinks. For the room decor I would suggest getting rid of the carpets and put in hardwood floors (may already have hardwood under carpeting) with area rugs. Beds and linens very comfortable. Plenty of closet space. Common Areas: Gorgeous spaces that could use a little tweaking. The covered porch looking into the garden is lovely. The tables and chairs perfect for morning coffee but WHERE is the complimentary morning coffee that one expects in a five star hotel? The bakery concession on the porch has tacky refrigerators that are completely inappropriate for the venue. The whole area cries for a simple yet elegant hotel lobby bar. A couple of tables for mahjong in the lobby would be a very nice amenity!! The open lobby spaces are so inviting that you want to have a drink handy to enjoy the tranquility. Much appreciated—-the Flow Water Dispenser in main lobby—A+ Activities: Wonderful yoga class. Great instructors. Thank you. Staff: To a person the staff have been warm and welcoming. Security: The elevator bank in the historic wing should be key code protected. Anyone can wander into the hotel particularly from the main shopping drag allowing one to access upstairs quickly and easily—very porous. Conclusion: The hotel with a few additional details could be truly spectacular. We are enjoying our stay and appreciate the kind service from all of the dedicated staff.
Beautiful resort, nice people however not relaxing! Don’t book here unless you like to spend your vacation waiting in lines. You have to be in line at 6am to even have a chance of being able to pay $85 for a beach chair, gym is sub par, wait for breakfast is at least 30 minutes, bakery has a huge line and then just closes at noon.Had a voucher for Daly muffins but unable to use for this reason.
An absolute must for anyone interested in history and having the resources. We stayed in the historic, original hotel. Room was nice and vintage…but not run down. We had the “resort view”, which was fine. Just on thing would have been nice….a microwave in the room. We are out a lot, no surprise, had leftovers which would have been much more palatable if heated. I thought the $700/night was a little steep…but major splurge for our family. You only live once!
First class employees, superb food and cocktails, gorgeous public rooms and restaurants, beautiful boutiques in the hotel, fantastic bellmen and valet parking attendants, lovely reception desk staff and concierge, very attentive waiters, super clean rooms, ultra comfortable beds, outstanding air conditioning system, gorgeous settings for weddings and other private receptions and dinners.
Our stay at the The Royal Hawaiian was amazing! The ocean view is absolutely beautiful, and the entire atmosphere is filled with kindness. A special shout out to our housekeeper, Elsa. We stayed on the 11th floor room 1106. She was the best! So kind, always greeting us by name, and made our stay feel extra special. The luau was a great experience with a variety of food and cultural insight, and the location is perfect. It's right on the beach with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Highly recommend! 🌺
My mom and I loved this hotel. We chose The Royal Hawaiian because our Ukrainian ancestors immigrated to Oahu. They were musicians and played at this hotel in 1920s in the ballroom. My mom and I were celebrating a special occasion. The moment we arrived, to the time we left, everything went smoothly. We even went through the biggest storm in 20 years! We loved Yoga, and Yoga Nidra every morning. Swimming in the pool. Walking along the beach at night listening to music. Our room on the 11th floor had a balcony over looking the ocean with a gorgeous view to watch the sunsets. The beds were comfortable. The staff was courteous and helpful. I have to say that our housekeeper, Elsa, was especially wonderful and friendly. She made our rooms feel fresh every day with so much care. We’ll definitely return here the next time we come. Thank you so much.
No room service! Really this historic 5 star hotel does not have any room service, at all! How is this a legitimate hotel? No room service!! Seriously!
Dear Royal Hawaiian Guest Services, I am writing to formally express my disappointment and frustration regarding the way my family was treated at the pool today. My wife and mother-in-law were seated in public lounge chairs at the pool beginning around 8:00 a.m. Later in the day, an employee by the name of John approached them in a rude and confrontational manner, told them they could not remain in those seats, and began picking up their personal belongings and throwing them at my wife while stating that they needed to move because the chairs had been paid for. That level of behavior is completely unacceptable, especially at a property like the Royal Hawaiian, where hospitality, professionalism, and guest experience should be held to a much higher standard. If there was truly an issue with the seating, it should have been handled respectfully and professionally. Instead, my family was treated with disrespect and unnecessary aggression in a way that was both uncomfortable and embarrassing. After this incident, I personally walked over to the towel service to clarify the situation and was informed that the chairs in question were not for rent and were in fact first come, first serve. That response raises serious concerns about why my family was singled out and removed in the first place. Quite frankly, it left me questioning whether John is acting outside the bounds of proper hotel policy. To make matters worse, I then sat and watched a nearly identical situation unfold with an older couple who attempted to sit in those same chairs. When they asked the same questions at the towel station, they were reportedly told that the guest renting the nearby cabanas is “just a jerk” and that he “comes here all the time.” If that is true, then it is even more troubling that hotel staff would permit other guests to be mistreated or displaced simply to accommodate repeated inappropriate behavior. My family and I have chosen to stay at the Royal Hawaiian for several years because of the hospitality, service, and relaxing environment your property has consistently offered. However, this incident has caused me to seriously reconsider whether we will return in the future. We also currently have a cabana rental scheduled for tomorrow, and after today’s experience, we are reconsidering that reservation. It is difficult to move forward with plans to continue spending at the property when my family has just been subjected to this type of treatment. We still have another week remaining on our trip, and I would expect this matter to be addressed promptly and appropriately. At a minimum, I expect a formal review of John’s conduct and assurance that this type of behavior will not continue at your establishment. No guest should be treated this way. I would appreciate a response from management regarding how this matter will be handled.
We had a very nice corner room, for our 40th wedding anniversary. We could see the ocean from one of the windows and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
From the start to finish of our five day stay at the Royal Hawaiian it was amazing. We had Makayo (I hope I spelled it correctly) greet us at the front desk and complimentary upgrade our room after mentioning it was my first time in Hawaii here for my birthday with my parents! She was so incredibly kind and helpful. The check in was seamless and left such a good impression on all of us. Later, after our first day we met Esther the housekeeper. Esther greeted us by name every morning and took time to speak to us and get to know us and our plans. Esther made the stay a million times better! She was so sweet and warm. We had to give her a hug on our last day lol. I work front desk at a Marriott here in California and I can only hope we leave our guests with the same feelings as Royal Hawaiian has given me. I love this property so much as do my parents. This is the only place we will stay when visiting Hawaii. The service, food, ambiance and people at this property have surpassed and exceeded my every expectation. Thank you so much for an unforgettable birthday!
Everyone was so friendly. Beautiful hotel. Staff are so helpful.

We love the location of this hotel and the historic charm, the service is friendly as well. A special shout out to Louise at the front desk, she was so kind and helpful at check in and worked hard to find me the upgrade I was looking for. We stay in the tower with a sunset view. We enjoyed the discount on breakfast with Marriott status, it is lovely to eat early in the morning and to look at Diamond Head and the beach. Thanks Royal Hawaiian for another great stay and special thanks to Louise at the front desk for her wonderful service at check in.
The location and character of the property was perfect. Every space was spacious which felt very grand.
The room lighting was very poor, however, the large windows made up for the lack of daylight in the room. The staff serving breakfast do not write down your food request so there is alot of returns to kitchen. That said the food is lovely and sitting on the deck is a wonderful place to enjoy your breakfast. These are only comments and not to defer from a lovely experience at this special hotel.
My wife and I have stayed here many times dating back to 2003. Today we checked in and received an upgrade. That was nice but this hotel has no coffee in the room and it does not offer room service. Their cost savings has now made us think this is no longer a luxury hotel it’s not worth the money if you can’t get up relax and have a cup of coffee.
I will be back after the grand reopening of The Pink Palace in 2027. We stayed 4 nights Feb 2026. This hotel is luxurious, accommodating, a bit dated, and historical. The grounds are true Hawai’i/not a concrete jungle. The spa was incredible. Oh, I have to mention: it’s haunted. We stayed in room 325, historical bldg.. On Sat evening, our TV turned itself on; the remote was 5 feet away from each of us. Then we heard teen girls running, crying, laughing down the hall. We opened our door to talk to them. They said something was happening in their room. Meanwhile a maid was hurrying past us. We all attempted to speak to her but she avoided us, rushing away, avoiding eye contact; she was scared. My teen daughter then googled “ haunted” hotel; we now know aren’t crazy. I tried to discreetly talk to the manager about this; he gaslighted me. Hence this post. We loved the beach ( rent chairs online in advance), restaurants, the staff- everything about this hotel is amazing- avoid the third floor, though.
Great location in the heart of things yet slightly secluded from the waikiki bustle. The building is old but beautiful. Rooms are a bit dated, but fine, and some small disappointments like no room service. Food at the sole restaurant meets expectations - excellent fish-melt sand-which. Overall, solid. Just slightly disappointed because it was advertised as a 5 star (and closer to 5 star price) and it was not. It’s a 4 star experience; no more no less!
We’ve been staying at the Royal Hawaiian for 15+ years during spring break and realize we never left a review. We love this hotel, the staff is wonderful and it’s small and doesn’t feel crowded like the rest of Waikiki can. It’s a great spot to ‘have it all’ - your own quieter and nicer hotel but also be steps from whatever else you might want. We always stay in the historic wing and we’ve been very happy with it.
Always stay at The Royal Hawaiian when I am in Honolulu for our annual convention. The RH is the perfect mix for me: next to the beach, secured from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, yet accessible to all that Waikiki has to offer. In advance of it celebrating its centenary anniversary, all rooms in the tower and in the heritage building will be updated. The update starts in August 2026 and will run through at least February 2027. The tower rooms will be 100% updated, the heritage rooms 80% (everything but the bathrooms). I look forward to seeing how they bring this beauty into the next century.
The property is classic and beautiful and it feels so good to be in it. The architecture is incredible and the views are breathtaking. We looked out over the garden from the top floor of the historic tower. The garden was incredible with tall palm trees nearly at your fingertips.
I found the prices of everything very high. We could not afford their high class steakhouse but Hawaii’s prices in general were so inflated so it was not just the RH.
As it was my birthday, I was upgraded to a suite with a Diamond Head view, which I appreciated. While the suite was not eligible for the 4:00 p.m. late check-out that comes with Titanium status and Amex bookings, the hotel kindly arranged a separate room for a few hours after check-out. This was extremely helpful, and I understand this is not a standard accommodation—indeed, I have never experienced this level of flexibility before. If i had to point out one thing, I have stayed at this property several times as a Marriott Titanium member before. However, I was again asked at check-in whether this was my first stay, which I found puzzling given that my membership number was registered in advance. I am unsure why my stay history is never reflected.
We stayed in the historic part and the room was awesome and the ocean view was AMAZING! We paid to have breakfast which was excellent.
You should have to pay extra for a beach chair when the rooms are pricey all ready.
First the Pros - beautiful historic resort overlooking Waikiki Beach, large rooms, daily maid service, comfortable bed & nice shower, quick elevators, tucked away from the busy street but still located near restaurants and shopping, offers lots of free daily activities (few examples: Aqua Zumba, historic tour of the hotel, craft classes), Garden View rooms are quiet and cost less. Happy employees. Free concerts and entertainment and a nice Spa. Great coffee machine and fridge. They are only 9 miles from the airport but it takes about 30 to 45 minutes due to traffic (taxi's about $60 & Shuttles run about $20). Cons - small pool on sight but you do have access to the hotel next doors pool, if you want to sit on the beach in front of the hotel in 2 lounge chairs it cost $75 a day, restaurant options are pricey, Fitness Center is small, no microwave and they have a daily resort fee of $52 and $55 for parking.
A++++++ best hotel we've stayed at in Hawaii. Amazing ambience and staff were so friendly and helpful. Luau was incredible. So much history. Will definitely stay again!!
It is everything you can imagine an iconic property like this to be. It was perfect
The Royal Hawaiian has a stunning outdoor setting and an unbeatable Waikiki location—steps from restaurants, shops, and the beach. Pros • Location: Excellent—close to dining, shopping, and direct beach access. • Atmosphere and history: Beautiful historic details and artifacts that give the hotel real character. • Dining: The Mai Tai restaurant was enjoyable. Cons • Room assignment: We requested a king bed for our 30th anniversary but were given a room with two doubles; a small plate of chocolate-covered strawberries and cookies was a nice gesture but didn’t replace the bed we asked for. • Room size and condition: Rooms are very small and feel dated. The bathroom was the smallest I’ve seen in a hotel. Bed was uncomfortable and drapes were torn. • Outlets and convenience: There are too few electrical outlets and no USB ports; we had to use the bathroom outlet to plug in a kettle because the cord was too short. • Pool and beach setup: The pool is small with limited seating. Beach chairs and umbrellas are expensive and often unavailable without advance booking. • Service: Staff seemed tired and not especially helpful. • Bakery: The on-site bakery was disappointing with nearby coffee shops. We recently stayed at the Miami National Hotel, another historic property, and it highlighted what the Royal Hawaiian is missing. The Miami National successfully blends historic charm with modern conveniences—larger, more comfortable rooms, updated bathrooms, and thoughtful preservation that doesn’t sacrifice comfort. By comparison, the Royal Hawaiian feels more like a preserved museum piece: beautiful to look at but lacking the practical updates that make a stay comfortable for modern travelers. Overall: The Royal Hawaiian offers a gorgeous location and memorable historic charm, but the rooms and some services need significant updating while preserving the hotel’s history.
Still great location and atmosphere
Didn't get the same level of service as in previous stays
I absolutely loved the atmosphere of The Royal Hawaiian. From the moment I first walked in, I felt an immediate sense of calm and serenity. The lobby was spacious and quiet, with a pleasant scent and gentle background music. Compared to the general loudness and busyness of Oahu, the hotel truly felt like stepping into another world. Simply walking around the property was a beautiful experience in itself. The architecture is stunning, and the signature pink aesthetic creates a uniquely elegant vibe. We stayed in one of the historic rooms, and it was completely worth it—perhaps even more so than staying in the modern tower. The room was spacious and enhanced the whole “palace” feeling of the hotel. The hotel’s location right on the beach was perfect. It was easy to go in and out of the water, and the ocean in front of the hotel has many shallow areas, which made swimming feel very safe—even for someone like me who worries about currents. We were even lucky enough to see turtles swimming nearby. The waves were a lot of fun, and the on-site bodyboard and surfboard rentals made it even better. The cocktails at the hotel bar were exceptional, beautifully crafted, perfectly balanced and so tasty. Each drink was so well made that we just couldn't stop ordering more. The bakery deserves a special mention. The coffee, pastries, and overall atmosphere were outstanding. Having breakfast there felt peaceful and genuinely enjoyable—I would happily spend every morning at the bakery if I could. If I ever return to Hawaii, this is the only place I’d want to stay.
The only things that bothered us: - it was surprising to find that the beach chairs cost an extra 200 dollars to rent for the day. Maybe it's just uncommon for Europeans but we are used to such things being included in the hotel price. - there were some roaches in the bathroom, we saw 1-2 almost every day - my husband was bothered by the fact that the TV didn't work properly - it was slow and lagged all the time. Although in my opininion TV doesn't matter when you're on such a vacation - but may be important to know for some people
The location of the Royal Hawaiian was exceptional! It allowed us to navigate and explore the area around the hotel. The use of the beach was great. We enjoyed it very much!
But we didn't like about the property was that dining at the hotels facilities were very expensive and we often found ourselves using the eateries on the perimeter of the hotel. We believe you should offer competitive pricing so that your guests can stay and partake of the dining that's available. We also were unable to use the beach, umbrellas, again. They were very expensive and we were not able to use them.
Location Slippers provided Surf lanae restaurant
Air conditioner in room was extremely noisy Either too hot when off, too cold when on
