Our wonderful balcony with a view of the ocean.
There wasn't anything I didn't like.
The only thing that upset me - and it really upset me - was that there were no cups or mugs in the room despite there being tea and coffee facilities. There were just paper cups Wrapped in plastic! They have brochures in the room asking us to minimise waste and be sensitive to the environment. But when I rang and asked for a mug they said they could not provide one. Seriously. It is 2026. No one wants to drink out of paper if they don't have to. I know Americans are obsessed with takeout coffee but surely both options could be provided. They have glasses. They have a restaurant. When I wrote and complained they replied "I am sorry you are unhappy with our choice of dinner ware". To be clear - I was upset about the lack of dinner ware and the disregard for the environment.
Location and amenities
Street noise
O estilo colonial, estar na rua principal e na praia ao mesmo tempo. As camas super confortáveis.
Historical location and architecture
Very early housekeeping
Situació i disseny del hotel
El servei de maletes i la no possibilitat de guardar les taules de surf, fa que no tornem al hotel.
More food options. Another pool as one not enough. Also pool closed so early. I felt like the price we paid was too much for what was offered.
The location and the staff were amazing
That I couldn't take the stairs sometimes the elevator took a little while. And also getting your car took a little while, but it was fine, but you just had to preplan for the wait
Location was great, so was breakfast, room rather small
Rather pricey I spent over $700 for one night stay included two drinks at bar.
The room was classic old Hawaiian style!
No ala carte breakfast.
Loved the location and direction access to the beach. The bed was so comfortable and ocean front view amazing
We loved our time here at the Moana Surfrider! Check in was easy and everyone is super friendly. Our room has a beautiful view. We are staying in the Tower ocean view!!! We had a minor issue with the AC unit and it was fixed right away. The grounds are impeccable- so beautiful. We enjoyed coffee daily at the Honolulu coffee store that is adjacent to the hotel. We sat by the pool and walked on the beach!!! We loved every minute and can’t wait to return!!! Don’t hesitate to stay here.!!!!
Great location & comfortable beds. Room size ok. Balcony size ok. However, no wine glasses or bottle opener/corkscrew. Complimentary water.
Very small pool.
Location is unbeaten! Staff are are amazing!
Our stay at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine Hawaiian hospitality, and the entire team made us feel like valued guests. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. As the "First Lady of Waikiki," it perfectly blends historic elegance with modern comfort. The beautiful banyan tree, oceanfront setting, and classic architecture create an atmosphere unlike any other hotel on Waikiki Beach. Our room was beautifully appointed, comfortable, and spotless, with breathtaking views that made every morning feel special. The beachfront location is unbeatable—just steps from the sand, surrounded by excellent restaurants, luxury shopping, and everything Waikiki has to offer. A special thank you to the Westin staff all around for their incredible hospitality and the thoughtful room upgrade. Their kindness and attention to detail made our vacation even more memorable and truly demonstrated what exceptional guest service looks like. Whether relaxing under the famous banyan tree, enjoying the beach, or simply taking in the spectacular sunsets, every moment felt magical. We left with wonderful memories and are already looking forward to returning. Mahalo to the entire Moana Surfrider team for making our Hawaiian vacation so unforgettable. I highly recommend this beautiful resort to anyone looking for an authentic Waikiki experience
Location, and beauty!
First room was very tiny. We moved rooms but a more expensive rate.
Konumu efsaneydi, odası geniş ve temizdi
Kahvaltısı çok yetersiz, plajı çok küçüktü
パーシャルビューのグレードで選んだのですが、ラナイから海の角度が悪くほとんど海は見えなかった
Right on the water Amazing amenities and restaurants
Everything was great. Definitely expensive, but very comfortable
Everything. Cleanliness, pleasant friendly staff, every amenity you could need, comfort, pristine care put in to all details needed with hospitality. Mahalo
Nothing. Everything was amazing.
The hotel is stunning. You feel like royalty coming in. The back patio at night is amazing and the beach is lovely. We did wish the pool was bigger for our family and not just packed with little kids. But overall, love the location and love the hotel itself.
We stayed one night is a beautifully appointed ocean suite. It had two balconies with wonderful views and comfortable chairs. The bed was comfortable. The fitness center was good, neither Peloton was working. We liked that we could go to the other hotels and room charge. The Mai Thai beach bar was great, delicious drinks. The location is right in the heart of it with tons of shopping and restaurants. Beach and pool are small. Very busy and many people everywhere.
Beautiful
Not great cocktails
Even though the price is really expensive, it doesn’t deserve to high price. The room is less spacious and customer service is not satisfactory. Swimming pool is small and no Jacuzzi.
Staying at the Moana Surfrider is like stepping into Hawaiian history. The “First Lady of Waikīkī” truly lives up to its reputation. Sitting beneath the famous banyan tree while listening to the ocean was one of the highlights of our trip. The location is unbeatable—you can walk to restaurants, shopping, and the beach is literally steps away. We had three rooms booked across the Surfrider Tower, Banyan Tower, and the newer tower, and it’s important to note that not all rooms are created equal. The rooms in the newer tower were noticeably more spacious and modern, while the rooms in the older towers felt more cramped in comparison. That said, each still carried the charm of the historic property. The staff was consistently welcoming and helpful, and we really appreciated the blend of old Hawaiian charm with thoughtful modern touches. One standout feature—surprisingly—was the high-tech toilets. It’s not often you mention that in a review, but the heated seats with built-in bidets were a very nice upgrade. The pool area, while very well maintained and attractive, felt a bit too small for a resort of this size and could get crowded. We also really enjoyed breakfast at the Veranda each morning—it was a relaxing and beautiful way to start the day. Overall, we loved our stay and the unique character of the Moana Surfrider. Just be aware when booking that room types vary quite a bit depending on the tower. It’s more than just a hotel—it’s truly part of the Waikīkī experience.
Classic beauty
Lacked small things a hotel of its price and style ought offer
Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The view and the staff were exceptional. We did not agree with the additional $100+ in room charges. For example, 2 adults and 2 children, under 12, were charged a resort fee PER PERSON per room. Noone used the exercise room or other perks; after sight-seeing during the day, there was no sunset view swimming as the pool closed at 6 pm. and only 1 "free" tote bag per room, although 4 charged a resort fee, for example, a feeling of price gouging. The nearby International Market is a must to see.
The Moana Surfrider is absolutely beautiful, both inside and out. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the history and charm of this iconic Waikiki hotel. I especially enjoyed reading about the hotel’s rich past and learning more about its place in Hawaiian history. The staff was friendly and welcoming throughout our stay, making us feel right at home. One of the best features is the unbeatable beachfront location. Stepping right onto the sand and enjoying the waves just outside the hotel was incredible. If you’re looking for a property that combines historic elegance, stunning ocean views, and a prime Waikiki location, the Moana Surfrider is a wonderful choice. I would happily stay here again!
We stayed at the Banyan rooms and they were just ok. The bathroom, even after a remodel, was quite small and didn’t seem to have much modern fixtures. We were on the 5th floor with a city view and could hear the noise on the main street fairly well. The pool was small and so many campers cop pool chairs without using them most of the day, albeit it’s kinda hard to be mad about that when there is direct access to the beach. The resort fee was absurd. My family and I didn’t use any of the services included with the fee. As a lifetime platinum member, it was nice to get the $40 for two people per day to be used at the cafe. Instead of the continental breakfast, we used it for breakfast, lunch, beverage, and ice cream items throughout operating hours. If I were to stay here again, I’d probably go for the Tower rooms and stay at a much higher floor facing the ocean.
My wife and I really enjoyed staying at the hotel. Clean rooms with lots of space. Elevators are a bit busy at times. Location is great walking distance to pretty much everything downtown. Staff was super friendly, treat Marriott clients great. The pool is a bit of a joke, too small, too busy and people abuse the saving chairs all day. Final rant…. $64 for valet parking per day!….only option… complete joke.
First time staying back at the Moana Surfrider since the recent renovation and it was great as expected. The lobby area has been beautifully re-done and retains a classic, elegant feel. We stayed in a Tower Diamond Head Ocean view room which was clean, spacious and had great views. The hotel pool is small with limited seating available so something to consider if you’re a pool person. A big thanks to Josh on the front desk who provided wonderful service at check-in and to housekeeping who did a great job during our stay.
Best hotel in the world! We stayed in a room with a view out to the ocean and of diamond head. Loved the location right on Waikiki, and the big banyon tree by the pool was always a nice spot to relax on our trip and escape the sun. The on site restaurant had the best steak frites. The steak was so tender and delicious, one of my favourite meals from the trip. The only downside is how slow the elevator is.
Thank you for a wonderful, special experience. We had some issues with our room that Winnie helped resolve quickly, exceeding our expectations. Chris also was very kind to send a gift to us to celebrate a birthday. The continental breakfast was plenty of food and the buffet breakfast was even better. Having fresh papaya, with lime, added to view and the perfect way to start the day. Food at the pool was also good and plentiful. My wife usually wants a kitchen in HI but commented “it was really nice not to cook or have to wash dishes for a week”. Thanks for making us feel at home and for treating us as special guests.
Everyone was extremely friendly. Room was beautiful. Important note that the beach area is not large. You should bring your own chairs. Location is great.
Wunderschöne Anlage direkt am Waikiki Beach. Das Hotel ist von der Architektur wirklich einmalig und wunderschön. Wir waren beim Ankommen wirklich sehr positiv überrascht. Sehr freundliches Personal beim Check-In.
The location of this hotel is perfect for anyone wanting to stay on the beach. It is a beautiful and iconic hotel that just celebrated 125 years. When you check in, you get a lei, and I also got a free lotion. The check in line is also not as long as other hotels and moves fairly quickly.
The only issue is the cost. The bathroom was also pretty small in the Banyan room with a partial ocean view.
Location
No room service
The location both to the beach and streets where everything is happening is what we liked the most.
No Room Service, No Mini Bar stacked with both alcohol and food and the beds weren't as comfortable as they were when stayed back in 2007.
The Waikiki ocean view room was breathtaking Waking up to the stunning blue ocean and relaxing on the balcony while enjoying the beautiful scenery felt like a dream. The views were truly spectacular both day and night. The afternoon tea experience was elegant, delicious, and incredibly romantic. Enjoying tea and desserts with such a gorgeous Waikiki backdrop created one of the most memorable moments of our trip. This hotel is truly a perfect destination for both relaxation and romance. The atmosphere was beautiful and ideal for creating special memories. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or simply looking for a perfect vacation getaway, this place is absolutely amazing.
First time in Hawaii, and I've lived the best experience in this hotel. The building is beautiful, it has the best location, and the staff is the best! Shoutout to Ken (beach/pool server), Eva (breakfast server), Haya (beach), Keola (Front Desk) Koji (server) and Louis. All of them have a great attitude, and made my stay unforgettable. I can't wait to go back!

Loved it all!!
Spent only one night and it was enough. My room was on the 4th floor overlooking Duke’s restaurant. They are banging pots, as in scraping food into the dumpster literally from 5:15AM to just past midnight. There’s constant music but nothing tropical and you just hear the noise not the music. Just enough to ruin sound of the waves. #2~I was enjoying the patio in the Am, only to be startled by 3 hotel employees on the balcony next to me. They said they were trying to catch someone smoking pot……what? #3~ Checkout at 11, turn shower on at 9:30. The pipe at the shower head is out of the wall and 1/2 the water coming out is going back into the wall. Called front desk , they did have a nearby room I could use to get ready….if I could just come down to the front desk. Spot was good, price was good, hopefully I can save someone from a room facing or nearby Duke’s and review will have been worth writing
We stayed at this resort for a combined 50th birthday and anniversary trip. The property is beautiful and well maintained. The beds were comfortable and even the pillows weren't too bad, though I always bring a travel pillow now. We stayed in the Banyan Wing which is in the historic part of the hotel. I found the room mostly quiet. I didn't hear anyone in neighboring rooms. An occasional door slamming in the hall. Sometimes, at night, you'd hear a loud car but it never really bothered me. We use a travel white noise machine everywhere we go and find that eliminates any noise concerns at night. The room was in good repair. There were a few minor issues like a cabinet that appeared slightly water damaged and the bottom of the glass on the shower looked as if it needed better cleaning. The room was cool and shutters on windows provided enough darkness at night. The staff was all very friendly and attentive. Housekeeping was prompt. They were frequently done before lunch. The breakfast buffet was ok. I've had some pretty excellent buffets at the Grand Hyatt Kauai and even in various hotels in Singapore and Hong Kong. By comparison this buffet was pretty limited in selection. Especially for the price of over $50 a person. The food was also just alright. I enjoy eggs benedict and was excited to see them, but the eggs were basically hardboiled, and not very good. The pancakes and waffles were better. The beach bar made a decent drinks (we only drink mocktails or virgin drinks though). The onsite coffee shop is busy, but good! Very convenient. We didn't use the pool. We sat by it for awhile and it seems clean and well maintained. It is hard to get a chair though. People put towels on seats to reserve them and you have to either get up early or go out after 5 to get a seat. Rentals of beach cabanas and lounges get booked fast. So book early. Beach access is fantastic. Easy access to a beach that is calm enough to swim. Not much for snorkeling though. I did see a few little fish while swimming, but not a lot. The beach was busy, but we were able to find a spot. Lots of shopping in the hotel and very nearby. Very walkable area. Lots of good food options. The trolley stops are nearby as well if you want to use that to tour around. We used the concierge desk to book a tour and it was easy and convenient, but marked up quite a bit above having just done it ourselves. As mentioned we were celebrating a 50th birthday and an anniversary during the stay which we mentioned at check in. We were given a voucher for two free drinks. I Thought that was a bit cheap given the status of the hotel and the fact we're awards members - but it was also mother's day weekend and perhaps they didn't have any upgrades or better options to offer. Fair enough. Over all, we enjoyed our stay enough we plan to come back again next year and maybe stay in the more modern tower instead!
We stayed in the tower with a view of Diamond Head and the ocean. The room was clean and comfortable. We were on the 16th floor with a great view of the beach and the surfers. The mini fridge in the room chilled down the water we received every day and kept our beverages cold. The maid was not leaving us regular coffee for some reason. We called and had some delivered a couple of days and they apologized that we were not getting what we wanted. We ended up leaving a note that we wanted 4 regular coffee pods and 4 waters. This helped. The last full day the maid didn’t come to clean our room. The maids were leaving for the day and my husband let them know our room hadn’t been cleaned yet. Someone came shortly to clean the room. Overall, we were pleased with the room. The staff were pleasant and brought what we needed when we asked.
This place checks all the boxes, in my opinion. Multiple Food options (I mean ube chia coconut with haupia and fruit…WAAAA?!?’), location, pool, friendly staff, renovated rooms.
Our good friends are staying at the Moana surf rider this week. It was their 30th anniversary, so we surprised them by ordering a bottle champagne to be delivered to their room. We never received confirmation that they had received it so we called the hotel. we spoke to three different staff, none who could answer our question. They referred us to call the restaurant where the phone rang on and on. The restaurant was closed that day we learned but the staff had told us to call. next day we started again and this time spoke to a food and beverage manager. She said that they had delivered the champagne today aftee we had ordered it two days earlier It was delivered in a bag, not in an iced wine bucket. The presentation was unsatisfactory to put it mildly. Where was a chilled chsmpagne bucket?! For a quality resort, this sort of lack of employe information as well as an unappetizing presentation should be noted then improved.
location as always, we only come to the wakiki water front, after a few small staffing behaviours well go back to Pink Palace next time
dissapointed to see trash in a hallway overnight and sometimes well into the next day, a quick whip thru by a clean is needed more often, went to front desk and was thoroughhly ignored by your "elite" desk whilst waitng for another service person, even a smile and a wont be a minute would be well recieved if we are not a customer shge is expected to serve
My wife and I recently stayed six nights in a tower room at the Moana Surfrider. We really liked this hotel. The location is perfect for Waikiki. The staff are amazing. The hotel itself is historical, yet impecibally clean and very well maintained. Our only disappointments were at the pool and the patio bar/restaurant. I was checked in by a very friendly and helpful employee named Charlotte at the Bonvoy desk. She provided a brief history of the property including that the Moana was the very first resort in Waikiki Beach. She also gave me a small booklet with information about the hotel and included two drink tickets. She then put a real Hawaiian lei around my neck which is a very nice touch. When I informed her my wife would be joinining me at the hotel the following evening, she added her to the reservation and encouraged me to bring her by the desk so she could also get a lei. Charlotte did try to upsell me by offering me a larger room in their tower for an extra $50.00 per night. I thought my wife would appreciate the larger room. So, Charllotte was successful. The Moana Surfrider sits right on Waikiki Beach. At the rear, there is an indoor/outdoor restaurant, a patio bar restaurant and a counter service coffee café; all of which overlook the beach and ocean. The Room My Tower room was on the 17th floor facing the Outrigger hotel next door. This is far from an ocean view room, but from the balcony, I could easily see the beach and ocean as well as the street area in front of the hotel at the front of the International Marketplace across the street. The room had two queen beds which were very comfortable with good linens. The bathroom was an older, basic layout with a tub and shower and a single sink. The shower had a separate hand wand and a rainfall shower head. Water pressure wasn’t great, but it was adequate with plenty of hot water. The closet was also in the bathroom area and included a high shelf, several hangars and a safe. I had to request extra hangars for my wife which were brought to my room almost immediately. The room had one dresser with three drawers, a sliding shelf area for a Keurig style coffee maker and coffe suplies. There was a small refrigerator behind a door at one end. Housekeeping kept the coffee and Aquafina water bottles well stocked. Food and Drinks The Beach Bar: This is an outdoor patio restaurant and bar under a lot of umbrellas and a beautiful banyan tree. Unfortunately, it’s not open for breakfast. However, you can get coffee, pastries and sandwiches from the nearby Surfrider Café’ counter service and enjoy them here with a view of the beach and ocean. The Beach Bar does serve food for lunch and dinner, but the prices are high even for Waikiki. A burger and fries is $31.00. (That’s $10.00 more than the Hula Grill next door and the Hula Grill has really good food and also has a beach and ocean view.) There is typically live entertainment at the Beach Bar, so I suppose you’re paying for that. The entertainers I saw and heard were pretty good, but played the same songs I’ve been hearing for decades. Personally, I just can’t sit and listen to yet another rendition of “Hotel California” or “Dreams”. However, I do understand some people still like hearing that stuff. Be aware getting a table here for luch can be a challenge. It’s open seating. That means the tables are all filled and people wander aimlessly looking for a place to sit. There are typically also a few Karens around stalking a particularly nice table and ready to pounce the instant people occupying said table give the slightest indication of leaving. (This is another reason I didn’t really like this restaurant.) The Veranda at the Moana: This is an indoor/outdoor restaurant at the rear of the property with a view of the beach and ocean. This restaurant is open for breakfast 6:00 AM to 10:00. This sounded great until I actually went there for breakfast and saw the sign at the entrance explaining they only serve a buffet at $52.00 a person. Hey, I get that everything is expensive in Waikiki. And yeah, the view from that restaurant is really spiffy, but not $52.00 for breakfast spiffy. This was a big disappointment for my wife and me. There is almost always a line of people waiting for this buffet, so there are apparently plenty of people willing to pay for the breakfast buffet. Fun Fact: I have previously stayed at the Princess Kaulani which is directly across the street and is also a Marriott Property. They have a very good, poolside patio restaurant which opens for breakfast at 6:30 AM. My wife and I went over there and enjoyed a nice breakfast for far less than $52.00 a person. You can even bill to your room since Marriott considers it all the same property. Surfrider Café: This is a counter service coffee bar serving drip coffee, specialty coffee, slushees, smoothies, pastries and sandwiches. I often went to this café for early morning coffee and croissant. The drip cofee is good. The croissants are far from epic, but still pretty good. The muffins are not very good. A friend of mine got a breakfast sandwich that he said was pretty good, if a bit overpriced. Later in the day my wife got a slushee and I got a smoothie. I’m sorry to say they were both downright awful. I threw mine away. Fun Fact: The Hula Grill is directly next door, has an amazing beach and ocean view and has the best fruit smoothie ever! So yeah, that’s another great option. The food is very good and the prices are downright reasonable for Waikiki. (My wife and I ate there three times during our stay.) Vintage 1901: When I first arrived at the Moana Surfrider, I saw there was a piano player in the lobby. I really liked this and planned to come back for a listen. When I later went by there with my wife, I saw this area is really not part of the lobby. It’s the “Vintage 1901” restaurant and bar. If you want to sit in this area and listen to the piano, there is a “Two Drink Minimum”. They also serve “small plates”, but I don’t know anything about that. I don’t drink very much and my wife doesn’t drink alcohol at all. So, for us, it wasn’t really worthwhile to sit in this area to listen to the pianao player. However, there is a lot of seating in the nearby lobby area where you can sit and still listen to the piano with no two drink minimum. Pool: The pool at the Moana Surfrider is not large, but adequate. What’s not adequate are the number of pool chairs. Unfortunately, I saw the same problem here I’ve seen on cruise ships; Chair Hogs. Early in the morning, the Chair Hogs place towels and personal items on every one of the pool chairs to shout, “SAVED!”. Often there were only a few people in the pool area, but every chair remained as marked territory. You can get pool towels and bring them the beach which is right by the pool. Cabanas are also available for rent at prices so I high I didn’t even consider it. History: On the second floor, just above the lobby area, is a small hotel museum. This area has multiple pictures and descriptions about the hotel through the decades. My wife and I really enjoyed this musuem area. And you don’t have to pay $52.00 for a buffet or meet a two drink minimum to enjoy it. Although I wasn’t particularly impressed with the food and drink options at the Moana Surfrider, overall, my wife and I really enjoyed this hotel. The rates are not cheap, but the location and service are excellent. We also like the classic architecture and décor. We have stayed in other, modern “corporate” hotels where everything is steel, concrete and glass. We find such properties cold, sterile and sometimes downright dystopian. The Moana Surfrider is a pleasant contrast to such hotels.
the amazing bed, the location and the rockers on the porch were great
nothing
Everything
Disappointed that they take a $100 off your credit card and after 5 days I’m still waiting for reimbursement
SENSATIONAL PLACE - 5 star in every way . Location, pool , rooms etc. The breakfast was best we had in our 6 weeks USA trip. Great service all round. Only issue was we had an older room right near the pool / food area and music played all night until 10 pm ( we go to bed early)
The history, the beauty of the building, the location on the water, the views from the lanai. Position position position
Simply gorgeous hotel. Rooms were clean, staff very kind. The lobby makes you feel welcoming and elegant. The Beach House was fantastic for lunch. There is a wonderful piano player in the lobby each evening and people had fun dancing and socializing. This hotel doesn’t give off mall vibes like a few others we walked thru. Located directly on the beach. You can easily walk to lots of places.
The building is gorgeous inside and out. The view and access to the beach is fantastic. The location is convenient to much of Waikiki, with easy access to other parts of Honolulu. The bed was amazingly comfortable.
The room itself was lackluster for the price. The decor was odd in a way that's hard to describe. The balcony was inaccessible, which was explained at check in, but the doors to it couldn't even be opened for a nice sea breeze. Similarly the window only opened about 2 inches. It seems that either it should open all the way or not at all.
The Moana Surfrider is undeniably one of Hawaii’s most iconic and breathtaking buildings. With its rich history and stunning architecture, it truly is a "must-stay" for anyone visiting Waikiki. Location-wise, you simply cannot beat it, a solid 10/10. However, after experiencing this property multiple times, I’ve found that your experience here will heavily depend on where you sleep and where you swim. Here is a breakdown of my most recent stay: The Rooms: A Game of Roulette During my previous visit, I booked the Tower Wing. It was exactly what you expect from a luxury Hawaiian resort: beautiful, modern, and wonderfully spacious. This time as the Tower Wing was full occupied, I booked the historic Banyan Wing. Unfortunately, I was incredibly disappointed. The room itself was small, and the bathroom was tiny. Given the premium nightly rate, the price point simply did not match the quality or comfort of the Banyan Wing room. That being said, I have to give a massive shoutout to the housekeeping team. Both previously and during this recent stay, the rooms were impeccably clean. Thank you for your hard work! (Cleanliness: 10/10) Resort Activities: The Heart of the Hotel The hotel’s daily cultural and wellness offerings are truly where this property shines. • Morning Yoga (10/10): The morning yoga offering is absolutely beautiful. Each instructor brings their own unique flavor and energy to the practice, making it the absolute perfect start to a beautiful Hawaiian day. • Ukulele Lessons (10/10): We attended the ukulele lesson on this trip, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! It was so much fun, incredibly engaging, and a wonderful way to connect with the local culture. The Elephant in the Room: The Pool We need to talk about the pool. For a resort of this magnitude, the pool is simply too small. It gets crowded quickly, and honestly, it is time for the property to look into building a second one. Equally pressing is the service at the pool deck. The hotel management desperately needs to train the pool team to deliver the same high level of customer service found throughout the rest of the resort. Right now, there is a massive, missed opportunity to provide guests with a seamless, luxury poolside experience. The Verdict Would I recommend the Moana Surfrider? Yes. It remains a stunning, historic gem with incredible activities and an unbeatable location.
The view, the location, the staff, the veranda and bar on the beach. The ability to rent chairs and umbrellas. Beachside service. The surf break. The architecture
I felt for the expense of the room it could have felt a little more luxurious. Better pillows for example.

Tolle Lage, direkt Waikiki Beach.
We stayed here with our 16-year-old son for spring break. We were looking at the Royal Hawaiian, this property, and Halekulani. I am really glad I booked here. Pros - we stayed in the renovated tower. We were able to guarantee connecting rooms with our son and the floor we wanted when we made the reservation. We had ocean view rooms, and they both had an excellent view. The rooms were updated, clean and we didn't feel cramped. We didn't hear any hallway noise or any noise (we weren't street side though)h) and found the beds to be comfortable. We all slept great - excellent blackout curtains as well. We checked out the other two hotels I was looking at - the Halekulani would be great for just couples/adults if we didn't have our son. Our son is 16 and needed more excitement and beach access. The Royal Hawaiian was pretty, but too dated for our tastes. The Moana has a pretty and comfortable lobby, a good coffee shop in the lobby, and a great breakfast buffet on a beautiful porch. They have a fun and lively bar under this beautiful tree, which has great live music with good food and drinks. The pool is fine (not as nice as Halekulani ) but better than Royal Hawaiian. That is why I wouldn't stay here with little kids - I would stay somewhere with a better pool. The beach access is great, though. We also loved their cabana and beach chair/umbrella policy. You can reserve in advance, and there is a lot of flexibility. That was a big plus! The hotel is super central, and we could walk everywhere. Overall, we had a great stay here. The weather was another story!
We decided to break our trip to Japan up and stay a couple days in Hawaii on the way and the way back. This was our "on-the-way" choice. Our other hotel ended up being far superior for about the same price. Both were expensive in my opinion (we booked through Costco) The Platinum pick-up through Costco was perfection. Easy, very nice car and driver, so comfortable, just perfect. The hotel location is prime Waikiki, the lobby is beautiful and the view out the back really special. When we walked in to the check-in area, it was our first hint that this hotel wasn't what I expected for the reputation and price. There were stanchions like a value resort at Disney or the bank, separating us "regular" guests from those with more status. I get it, and that's typical, it was just the execution seems so not luxury. We unfortunately visited during the heavy rain period, but that exposed one of their weaknesses...lack of "regular" restaurants. For dinner there were very few choices, and the choices were either out in the rain or(not sprinkles folks, it was flooding the patio) or at a very high end restaurant. We ended up walking nearby to a restaurant. The pool is very small, very tight and not a lot of capacity for chairs, etc. This might upset some of you, but the feel of the services felt more like a Marriott than anything more luxurious. Nothing about our stay felt really beyond a good hotel. And we paid "great" prices. Part of the issue is Hawaii has gotten so expensive, that it made Japan feel cheap.
Hawaii holds a special place in my heart. It is the only place on earth where, after just a couple of days, I feel all my stress disappear. Staying at the Moana Surfrider has played a significant role in making those experiences so extraordinary. This past March, we finally returned to Hawaii, and once again we chose the Moana Surfrider for our stay. We were truly blown away by the new lobby and front desk area, the newly renovated rooms, and the warm welcome and fantastic treatment we received from everyone working at the hotel throughout our stay. This trip was especially meaningful because it was our first visit to Hawaii with our three-year-old son. We were incredibly happy to bring him to Waikiki Beach, and the hotel fully met our expectations. In fact, it was one of the main reasons why this visit to Hawaii was once again such a fantastic experience. I would especially like to thank Roxanne for helping us with our requests and with a few issues we encountered. She did a fantastic job and handled everything very professionally, but what really stands out is the warmth and empathy she brings to her work. I would also like to thank Petar, who is now retired. Even after nine years, we still remember the fantastic cocktails he made, always with a smile and while sharing his wonderful positive energy with all the hotel’s guests. I would like to end this review by explaining why I have not written more about the amenities, the food, or the services. The reason is that I want to focus on what truly makes this hotel so special and different from others. Of course, all of those things are great — but they are great in many other hotels as well. What is truly unique about this hotel is the strong feeling and positive energy I experience from the very first moment I check in until the last moment I check out. It is the same feeling I had during my previous stays in 2016 and 2017, and now, in 2026, it is just as strong as before — if not even stronger — especially with the newly renovated rooms and lobby. Some people have retired, but the new team members are wonderful as well. I cannot wait to come back again, and I hope it happens this August. Thank you, Moana Surfrider, for everything you are and everything you do during my visits to Hawaii. You play a significant role in making Hawaii my favorite place on Earth.
Beautiful hotel with outstanding service. The location is great, ocean front with a wonderful mangrove tree that hosts plenty of birds. Rooms are great.

Perfection is the only way to describe the Moana Surfrider! The staff, the location the luxury hotel, honestly one of the most incredible places and experiences I have had around the world. We had initially booked the Outrigger Beach Resort (next door) but were horrified by its current condition, Yumi at the Moana Surfrider found us a room at a better price than the Outrigger and immediately made us feel like our vacation was going to be incredible! Yumi also learned that it was our son’s 11th birthday while we would be staying and she and the staff went above and beyond to make him feel special and our family feel welcomed and settled. We have stayed across Europe, Asia and the continental US and this has been by far one of our best vacations. Their concierge Mary rebooked our luau (after rains on the north shore) and found us an incredible snorkeling adventure (where we saw dolphins and swam with turtles!) and made sure we knew we had to book our hike up Dimond Head. The location could not be better with its exceptional beach (book umbrellas before you come!) and the amazing shopping and dining options. Cannot recommend enough the brunch on the veranda an exceptional view in a stunning setting with really great food ( try the table side pancakes!!) Truly an amazing hotel they saved our vacation and absolutely exceeded our every expectation!! We will 100% be back! Thank you Yumi and the Moana staff for saving our vacation and making it SO special!
Great hotel

Stayed overnight on my way home to Maui from Japan. So thankful that I was able to check in early and had a very nice ocean view room on the 4th floor with amazing heavenly bed. Breakfast at the restaurant was delicious and they were able to accommodate a late checkout for me with my Bonvoy Platinum Elite status. Would highly recommend this hotel when staying in Waikiki.
What a nice introduction to Hawaii. The Moana Surfrider is a great old style hotel. Wonderful service, lovely room and much easier to navigate than most of the other large hotels on Waikiki.
