Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton

We love the gardens and the pools and the walks. The breakfast conservatory and outside patios are beautiful. The bar menu is very convenient if the Bull Run is too much food or you just want a small snack. The place has a cheerful ambiance, I think because of the wonderful service from a very attentive staff and a bunch of guests who really love to stay here for business or pleasure. One of my favorite Protea/Marriots.

Beautiful old school style oasis in the heart of Sandton. Lovely pools that no one else seemed to use and stunning gardens. Easy access around Sandton with the hotel shuttle. Superb restaurants on site and staff willing to make you feel like family. Vessa(I think I got her name right) and her team are absolutely killing it on the service levels they offer. At breakfast the service levels were out of this world. Lucky was my favourite waiter and has loads of potential. I hope the hotel nurture him and allow him to develop. 100% will return again. A very special hotel.

There is absolutely nothing not to like. World class hotel and everything is humming like clockwork. 100 out of 10.

On check out, we waited for so long to get people to assist us and carry our bags out. We had to eventually go alone to reception carrying our bags on our own.

We really enjoyed our stay! The location is excellent, and the hotel feels very spacious overall. The green grounds are a standout feature—a really pleasant place to unwind and hang out outdoors

Nothing major to complain about, but worth noting that due to the layout, some rooms require quite a bit of walking to reach the main areas like breakfast, reception, or the main entrance. Also, the gym is a bit too simple and could definitely be improved. Overall, though, it didn't ruin our stay!

Excellent location, great facilities and good value.

Location is great - close to everything you'd need nearby. Shuttles to and from major shopping areas and the train station makes it easy to get around. Staff were great too.

Ordering drinks at the bar took ages in my opinion. Not sure why but with the amount of people in the bar area and outside the speed of service from the bar area needs to improve. The other area that was dissapointing was the Bull Run restaurant. I had heard it is a great steak house, unfortunately 2 of our 4 meals were less than average - might have just been an off night though - cannot judge a restaturant on one meal.

I love the location, I really enjoy the bull run steakhouse and access to planet fitness… it’s the main reason why I stay there!

The rooms are just so basic and the noise transfer from room to room has always been a problem. I really feel they could fix this!

PEOPLE WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL .

Shower was leaking . Bathroom floor was wet and a huge risk to fall on tiles. Should have moved us to an upgrade room. Hotel should be refurbish .

I stay at this hotel over the weekend and it was such a pleasant experience. The check in was fast and ladies where friendly, rooms where clean,fresh and spacious, they even kept the room warm for me.breakfast and dinner real good lots of options. Absolute gem in the busy hustle of Sandton, highly recommend

This is my second time staying at the Balalaika, and I have no complaints. The team always makes me feel right at home, and the service is consistently excellent. I also absolutely love the ribs at Bull Run—they're always a highlight of my stay!

Amazing experience. Fantastic location with great restaurants. Service and personalised with true care. Rooms are great and feel homely with beautiful gardens. You would never know you are in the city which is a true escape in the city.

Nothing springs mind. We did walk around the locality but it was very quiet and with the exception of the shopping mall we didn't see anyone.

The room that was allocated was on the same floor as the bar which was quite noisy, especially the first night. It is off-putting as it is business travel and a good night's sleep is required.

Renovations - sound of hammering and drilling the entire Sunday afternoon No water pressure in the basin. Great pressure in the shower but the shower drain couldn't handle the volume of water so whole bathroom floor flooded The hotel is laid out in a maze and it is a very long walk from the room to reception Reception staff are the absolute worst

Sometimes the coffee cafe personnel is out of sight when one wants to buy coffee. Maybe they should have a bell to ring for service

There was works in one corridor before my room & the noise & fumes which I had to pass through just to get to my room & workmen with hoovers and floor covering which were trips & falls hazards.

The room service is exceptional. Its so efficient. Food from the Bullrun was nice, though some of the menu items were not available our whole stay, and we loved the variety on the breakfast. The housekeeping staff was nice and the some of the other staff. The shuttle service is so convenient, makes it so safe.

I just felt like some of the front desk ladies weren't so hospitable. Its a hotel, it should make you feel so welcome.

it is silent and clean; staff are generally very pleasant and helpful.

1. Not the 1st time, but always have a feeling the bottle of water per day is not enough. 2. made a mistake at reception level which made me pay for a future room. Although initially upgrades as a compensation, the person should have been more careful before confirming my secretary had not paid the room.. when in fact 1st nigth had been paid. 3. My phone in the room was not working properly, even after maintenance visit to repair.

Felt like home away from home. Everything you need is nearby, which made the stay even more convenient. The garden and pool area were peaceful and perfect for unwinding. Breakfast offered a great variety, the bed was really comfortable, and the staff were warm, helpful, and welcoming throughout. Looking forward to my next stay.

Plumbing 😞minor issue that can be sorted, bathroom would sometimes let out a foul smell. It didn't last long but requires some attention.

The pools, although clean and pleasant are just a bit too small to swim in.
