Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The hotel reception and sitting area were cozy and welcoming. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful.
The breakfast choices were average.
Lovely old Hotel on outskirts just beyond of Birmingham centre.
It was convenient for where we needed to be , we booked just 30 minutes before after a horrific air bnb experience and everyone was just so welcoming
A 25 minute walk to the cricket ground. Parking.
Very dated rooms. The price is too much and on top of that it’s £15 to park your car
Second stay here, good location lovely main building
Charge to service room during stay. Never experienced before!
Location
Nothing.
Location
Money making schemes 7.50 per night added to make up the room if required 15.00 per day parking fee for Booking.com customers
Hot day in the Summer and the fan didnt quite cut it (no air-con).
Absolutely fine for a quick overnight business trip booked at gthe last minute.
The location was good. The was ok.Bed was comfortable.
Location of room was quite a distance from reception wasnt too bad for me but people with difficulties might be a problem.Breakfast was quite limited.Went to the bar to get a drink at 9pm on Tuesday night no one around to serve me.Had trouble turning off hot tap in bathroom.
Excellent hotel
Don't worry about the fact that the building is very old, the rooms are in another part of the hotel and everything is fine with cleanliness there. It's cozy and clean. The breakfast is as it should be.
Lovely building, had the wow factor when walking in. Was quiet during the night.
The wow factor didn’t last. Room wasn’t very clean. Hairs in bathroom. Carpet didn’t look hoovered. Breakfast wasn’t great.
plenty of hot water
Room at back in car park, bathroom needed room was not cleaned or bed made, coffee and tea not replenished
Having to pay £15 to park
Meal ok
Room in separate block, limited food choices and quality, property felt very tired and under invested
very old fashioned needs revamping
it was almost empty needs new windows needs decorating
Great location, nice ambiance, safe parking, great public transport Across the road towards Highfield(all one word. spelt without a space) road area, bistro, wine tastij and also the High field (spelt with a space) restaurant . Fantastic. Lots of other places nearby
Nit so much a dislike, but a pool table would provide some facility. No meal there, but might have been the time we stayed.
Amazing building
Nothing
Beautiful hotel, easy to get to the centre and the rooms were clean and very comfy.
Not too much
Staff very unhelpful food wasn’t very good not a good standard for price
Hotel itself was very good and comfortable
Found it difficult to get into .
No air conditioning, window only opened 6 inches
Staff were helpful and friendly. Location near to tram stop was good. Secure parking. Comfortable room and nice breakfast.
Guests on floor above were noisy
Nothing to like.
Very hot period and no aircon! We booked two rooms months ago - one for my wife and I and the other for our daughter but upon arrival were informed that the rooms were a distance away from each other and could not be changed! No consideration by hotel booking staff!
Happy staff
The staff were lovely, very helpful and friendly. Lovely spacious room, large comfortable bed. Great location.
N / A
The entire hotel is tired and grubby
Comfy bed
Lovely building. Lovely helpful staff
It was the hottest day during heatwave and no air con but couldn’t fault the staff. They were wonderful
Lovely property, clean and near tram stop for easy access to the centre
Unfortunately I booked a family room for 4 but when we got to our room we only had 3 beds! Told receptionist who said they don’t have any more family rooms so we had to be split up in two separate rooms. Staff also didn’t know the area so unable to offer advice on how to get to places or what was near.
Big bed and one helpful receptionist
Spider in the toilet so clearly not cleaned properly , hardly any toilet paper and no hand wash in the container , sink plug would not work Booked a ground floor room due to having an operation yet in arrival told arrival was by means of stairs or a long walk to back of hotel , really not helpful One girl on reception had no clue , told us that the room would be serviced even though note in room said it was extra cost but it wasn’t done . Failed to provide room service menu despite asking for it . Couldn’t provide small bottle of Prosecco even though it was on drinks menu
Great parking for work vehicles. Room was clean.
It’s too hot, even in winter. We have stayed numerous times because of the parking. There is no air conditioning and the heating is centrally controlled, snacks melted to liquid it was so hot and that was winter. I had the only room with AC(202) during a heat wave which didn’t work and nobody at reception had the means to do anything about it.
Parking readily available, though annoyingly had to pay extra for this. Breakfast was fine, nothing special. Staff at the breakfast room were kind and refilled my water bottle. I stayed in the long corridor building on the side of the grounds, rather than the main building. It was very plain and not very clean/ bugs in the room. I advise to book a room in the main building if possible.
The heating is controlled by reception. It was difficult to get hold of someone at times (more than once had a 30 mins wait at the reception desk). When I asked to turn heating on/off they would first claim I am wrong have not waited long enough, then on arriving to my room confirm that indeed it did have an issue. Most of my stay was spent extremely stuffy and hot due to issue with heating and windows not able to be open. I could not sleep throughout the night. Another issue is during my stay of a few days, not one single staff came to make up my room/clean it/empty the bins- despite leaving a sign on the door asking for it. When I called reception about it, they said cleaners have gone home (despite it being only lunchtime) and they still didn't offer rectify it. I felt patronised and forgotten when staying here. I had booked this hotel to stay in whilst sitting exams at a location nearby but in the end, I had such an uncomfortable stay that I honestly wished I had booked somewhere else as I could not study/revise at the desk in this room as it was unpleasant to spend any time in.
The overall ambiance and the cleanliness.
The place was too warm and there was a tiny fan and no open windows for proper ventilation.
Characterful entrance, bar and dining room (JRR Tolkien Blue Plaque). We took rooms in the 1970s extension at the rear (long corridors). Rooms were large by modern standards. Not modern decor, but all very clean & tidy. Staff helpful.
Nothing
Lovely old hotel - comfortable and characterful Loved the terrace Handy location - out of centre but suited our plans
Bar could be open more - we found a dearth of availability of teas and soft drinks during the day
It’s very run down
Staff are good. Rooms are clean.
Would like a fridge in the room.
Amazing staff, super clean and spacious room, delicious breakfast with varieties of food. The location is great too, very close to the city center. Gated parking.
Nothing!
Loved the location. Great bathroom in superior room. Nice oasis in the middle of busy roads. Excellent parking.
There was a heatwave - but no aircon.
Very friendly and great location
I didn’t like the fact that booking.com didn’t mention extra payment for parking
Beautiful building. Spacious, comfortable room
Only one night stay
Very modern bathroom. TV choices were great
Could do with a fridge weather was hot.
Friendly staff and location
CARLY AT RECEPTION VERY HAPPY
Friendly staff, quiet and respectful
Staff were all so helpful and friendly
Bathroom was a little tired and one pillowcase wasn't very clean
Staff were pleasant and helpful Room was clean and comfortable Breakfast was good Parking was easy Location was good Liked the tradional and historic feel of the hotel
The flush wasn't working properly in the toilet but we managed and reported it on leaving and I am sure it will be dealt with
Minor issues, e.g., no toilet brush and no spare toilet rolls. otherwise very good.
Old fashioned lovely build
Not enough signs when your trying to find your room
Location
Locked door on arrival, waited outside for 10mins - tried calling numbers on the door. Eventually a member of staff arrived. No apology from staff member . 1 towel in the room . Only 2 sachets of milk and 1 biscuit although the room was booked as a superior large room as travelled with my son. Not good for £130 per night!
The staff
The breakfast and where it was situated
Was charged for parking
The hotel is not what I expected as it was lovely cosy hotel but the oldest building is stunning beautiful as nothing I can say more.
Nothing I can say bad
Decor in main lobby was lovely.
Very noisy, windows are not sound proof! Breakfast was poor and completely waste of your money. There is a lovely resturant across the road which serves fresh food and even does delivery. Wouldn't recommend the food at the hotel. Also room doesn't come with air conditioner and you can't open the windows !
Good room but long walk to it. Readily accessible parking (chargeable).
Disappointing breakfast. Limited choice, poorly presented. Not easy to self serve cooked breakfast. No offer of tea from waitress, had to ask. Way below the standard of breakfast I expected from a reputable hotel. Had great difficulty finding the entrance to the hotel. Went round the block 3 times. Had to phone a friend in the end.
Excellent Curry Great beer, Neck Oil Comfortable
Breakfast sausages were too firm Slight language barrier with bar staff Car Park charge 😕
The staff were amazing
Nothing
Very comfortable room, good size and exceptionally clean
Friendly staff. Main building very beautiful.
The bed was uncomfortable and noisy when moving around.
Location and car park.
I have stayed twice, in difference rooms, and on both occasions the rooms were cold, and despite several calls to reception this was unable to be rectified and both occasions required a mobile heater to be used in the room. Generally I comfortable as I was so cold.
A very good breakfast with everything. The room was quiet, away from the street, window to the Garden. Bus close to the hotel. Some restaurants and little supermarket nearby.
Struttura pittoresca sembra di vivere nel passato
4 stelle senza frigobar e senza aria condizionata

Clean - recently refurbished room. Comfortable. Helpful cheerful staff. Weekend and hotel very empty. Seemed to be being run by one woman - but she was excellent.
The breakfast was not good. Cooked food in hot trays and seemed to have been there for some time. No cold cuts for “continental” breakfast and the only cheese were plastic wrapped blocks of sweaty, rubbery stuff. Hardly anyone in the hotel so it must be difficult to cater for all breakfast preferences - but this was dismal.
We visited the Plough and Harrow as we married there some years earlier
We noted the hotel was quite dark , our room wasn’t the cleanest leak in bathroom and also the water in reception looked like it had been there all day. Shame as we had such fond memories from when we got married there
The staff (particularly) Carly
location is good.
Access to rooms on the second floor was not particularly user-friendly. I specifically selected this hotel because it was listed as offering free parking; however, on arrival I was informed that there was a £15 parking charge, which was disappointing. The receptionist was polite on the surface and frequently used terms such as “lovely,” but her tone came across as somewhat sarcastic, which detracted from the overall customer experience.
Room was extremely hot we are in a middle of a heatwave and they couldn't turn the heating off. There was one fan that didnt do anything they didnt have any other rooms to offer either. We asked for water as the taps in the bathroom didnt have any cold water. They provided 1 bottle of warm water and ice. I will be formally making a complaint we ended up unable to sleep all night.
Spacious room.
Convenient.
Good location
Front of house staff when asked a few questions after were a bit short and quite abrupt and could have been a little less hostile when I was trying to clarify a point.
Spacious room . The receptionist, CARLA???, was helpful.
The rest O.K.
Great service
Staff
The road
Comfy rooms, friendly staff and plenty of car parking spaces.
Friendly staff the bed was comfortable the pillows were comfortable breakfast was very good the atmosphere was relaxed the service was excellent
The evening menu could have more variety The distance to my room was in a different postcode to the hotel reception room 206 was somewhat dated but comfy
It’s heritage
Location is easy to find, good customer service, room is clean, spacious and bed is very comfortable. Facilities in the room are in good working condition,.
It was my first time in the hotel. I didn’t like that I struggled to find my room upstairs (209). Description not so clear and I felt like walking in a maze.
The bed was comfortable. The double sinks were a good idea. Plenty of plug sockets. Kitchenette good but needs a sink/taps to wash cups & fill kettle. Settee good idea & dining table.
The television in bedroom wouldn't work on our final day. And the dressing table Stool was broken, by previous guests.
Great distance from the trams so was very easy access into the city centre, never used public transport in Birmingham but the fella at the desk gave us a perfect guide on where to access the trams etc. Beautiful building and so was the room, very spacious and our view was gorgeous
Location and breakfast
Rooms and hotel away from main reception are in need of renovation/modernisation
Excellent, friendly service at the bar and the food was fine.
Cleanliness overall in corridors wasn't great and in the bedroom it was poor, very dusty in the wardrobe area and clearly not checked / cleaned for a long time - to the extent that there was a womens 'bra insert' sitting on the shelf covered in dust...
Great location 👍 Main areas of the hotel lovely 🌼
If your staying in the more expensive room’s in the main part of the hotel it’s great but really seen a difference Staying in cheaper room .
The room was very cold, and I called many time to reception with no action
Car park was available which was helpful
Room was very cold. Staff were unable to put the heating on. Had to have a portable heater. It was freezing. This has happened to me twice at this hotel.
In general the property looked ok …
Could do with a freshen up decor wise. And I had asked for a ground floor room but it was far around the back of hotel. And when using a walking aid could have been bad if it had rained.. the staff member said it was a longer walk to go through the hotel and it would have included stairs …
Very traditional stay, good location (tram access) and breakfast. I enjoyed the staff interaction (I’ll need to come back).
Fairly old fashioned annex, however served the purpose.
Nice quiet location, large room, thermostat setting was perfect for sleep
Main gripe is the bathroom sink was blocked only because the stopper (plug)had been forced down and there was no means of raising it. The lever that controls the stopper was cut off at the base!
Location and easy access by road.
Property very spread out and a long walk through many passages to your room.
I loved the building and the style Excellent breakfast Location perfect for visit to Birmingham centre Staff really helpful and friendly
Alot of space in bedroom
Rooms are abit dated
Nothing much to say about this hotel
The hotel is need of a total refurbishment it like you gone back to the 1970s The staff member need to smile I asked 3 times to put the heating on had to wear my hoodie in bed as the room was cold The wash basin took 10 minutes to fill up the WiFi is rubbish windows not cleaned no telephone to ring for room service so had to use my mobile phone There is no room service after 8:30pm as the kitchen is closed. The evening meal was horrible an absolute disgrace not worth the money. Don’t be fooled by the photos on Booking .com
Friendly staff and good breakfast. Location was great.
Room was cold and no extra blanket available. The staff did turn on the heat when I asked. Hotel could do with an update, especially the stairs to the 2nd floor
