De oude grandeur en historie
Misschien de vergane glorie
The hotel is beautiful and the breakfast superb. Every type of guest could eat well. The views from the dining room are fabulous.
The bathroom was poor and the shower was a bath you had to climb into. The shower itself was old and difficult to shower with. It let down the whole experience. On booking we thought parking was free. On arrival we had to pay £10 per night.A
Breakfast was great. Near to pier.
The room needed a good clean/dusting, side of wardrobe, under skirting etc. Had a dated look for 4 star hotel, decor was shabby/didn't make sense. The balcony was locked off for safety reasons. Thought it was expensive for the size of this "cosy double". Then they charged me £10 a day for parking, what a cheek.
The view, location,quality of food
Nothing
Checked into a dirty room, was quickly rectified.
No Cocktails, even though I could see the tools and ingredients to hand.
Everything... Great staff, location, beautiful hotel!
That we couldn't stay a few more nights!
The Imperial is filled with character and style! Full of quirks and unashamedly in need of a full fat renovation - which would of course, totally destroy the character and history of the hotel - so please don't change a thing! Glorious views, lovely staff, good breakfast, and overall has a very romantic, and nostalgic feel to it. We all love to stay here and we will keep coming back
It is as it is ... if you don't like old fashioned bath tubs, and old fashioned showers, and a place filled with history and built for royalty back in the last century - save your money for something modern, purpose built - and dull! This place ROCKS and we love it
We had a wonderful sea view and a very comfortable room
We didn’t like having a shower curtain, the space to shower was quite small so keep touching the curtain was inevitable, we also were very disappointed that the swimming pool was closed despite saying it was open on the introductory letter

Location close to the centre of town, and a very large balcony that looked down to the sea
The hotel is quite tired and dated with a couple of smells you get from an old carpet in certain corridors. It was great that the hotel had a gym, but the gym equipment is old and needs to be replaced and updated.
Wonderful Victorian hotel in a great location. Great views from very large rooms. Bed is huge!!! Big balcony to enjoy the views.
Nothing, it was all perfect.
We had a superior room with king size bed and balcony. The bathroom had been recently refurbished and was also very good. We did not have breakfast so cannot comment. We had a swim in the decent sized pool and made use of jacuzzi & steam room before checking out.
The room was excellent with terrific views over the bay.
Fire alarm going off.
GOOD FACILITIES
Hedges and trees need a trim so to see the sea from garden room
The views where fantastic
You don’t even get a free coffee and when you had your food brought to you they then had to get the cutlery or anything else you needed
Très belle vue. Hôtel un peu désuet mais très propre.
Les chambres.
Once again, an excellent stay, nothing to complain about holy recommended
The breakfast was excellent and the location is superb The staff at breakfast were extremely friendly and very helpful
The location is beautiful as is the reception. Reception staff and manager very good.
Bar staff are always so scruffy and unprofessional. Rooms are so run down. Walls and furniture in bad shape and outdoor space was a total mess. Bed was hard, no plug near bed. Damp stains, paint peeling. Floorboards from above woke me up very early. My balcony had old fag butts on it and other horrible stuff.
The location was good and the hotel has lovely views. The staff I spoke to were polite.
Unfortunately, the room was not cleaned to the standard I expected. There was visible dust, dirt and cobwebs around the windows and fittings. The balcony was unavailable due to maintenance, which I was not told about before arrival, and the balcony door was faulty. The room phone also did not work and there was no room-service menu. Breakfast was disappointing and the food tasted poor. Overall, the stay fell well below my expectations.
The history behind it and the views ,staff friendly and go out of there way to make sure you have everything you need with out question .
The food wasn’t great average and over priced . Unfortunately the bath and shower was quite a dangerous event trying to get in and out due to the fact the glass shower screen being to long and getting in the way of the grab rails to be able to enter and exit the bath safely. Both chairs in the room very uncomfortable , broken and repaired with nail sticking out .
Lovely position
Breakfast- Bar_ Spa_ room- view- gardens
Building on outside a bit tired
Location
Very old and broken
The view was amazing across the bay, we had a balcony as well.
Everything is perfect!
Very nice decor on this period hotel
Would’ve preferred a room higher up as the sea gulls were noisy and begging for food outside the balcony.
lovely old fashioned hotel
no UK socket by the bed (only EU for bedside lamp). We had to unplug the kettle on the other side of the room to use the only plug available to charge phones
la ubicació, les vistes al mar, la mida de l'habitació, l'esmorzar.
No podiem sortir al balcó per falta de manteniment.
The views are amazing.
I have stayed here before, and been to many parties here but unfortunately the building needs money put into it. The decor/rooms are dated/tired and need a lick of paint. The outside needs tidying up. This used to be a very equisite hotel but unfortunately needs a bit of money spending on it now. The lounge area is lovely and relaxing.
Location, wedding venue, extensive breakfast choices
Room just too warm with no way of effectively cooling it
Love the entrance & lounges & the atmosphere of times gone by. Spa friendly & adequate. The conservatory area is a great place to relax and enjoy the views.
Windows need cleaning & hotel rather shabby but appreciate it takes time to update this large building.

The staff are ever so helpful, friendly and polite. Top standards, exceptional hospitality standards. Feels a real treat to stay here. Top quality service and they show immense pride in that service - doesn't feel like they're giving the service because they have to, it feels genuine. The rooms are fabulous. The view is breathtaking. The gardens are well maintained and the decor around the venue is classy, elegant and clean. It's older decor but brilliantly beautiful, grand and timeless. The breakfast room is my favourite. Eating during sunrise over the sea, the choice of food is brilliant. All preferences catered for. The table layout, table cloths, beautiful tableware. All cover a beautiful round table. It all feels so luxurious without the expensive price.
Nothing. I visit here multiple times a year and it's probably one of my favourite places. Fantastic value for money.
Location
Bit dated but still good
Breakfast with a sea view in dining room
The air was stuffy and stale throughout the building and we could only open windows in bedroom a crack as they had window restrictors. The electronic keys never worked so we had to go back to reception every time we tried to access our room.
Rooms are large
It’s a bit dated but all clean and fine
Small room, sink in bathroom blocked, uncomfortable bed& pillows. Bar closed early, ( 10-30 pm)
Friendliness of staff & location.
Nothing
You could never fault the breakfast here for quantity and variation. The diner was hot and lovely, worth the money and well presented.
The breakfasts are cold when you get to eat them, the service station is too far from the table, however some it’s were already cold ish when we picked them, obviously not knowing they were cold.
Lovely building and room, with an easily accessible car park. Room was very large and opened out onto the terrace.
No fridge in the room.
Kul att få med sig 'Imperial Torquai'- något stort som finns kvar från en svunnen era. Man har hållit hotellet uppdaterat och fint.
Baren och barutbudet.
The hotel has been refurbished, and it was back to the good old days of the 60's.
From the time you stepped in to the time you stepped out, a friendly welcoming from all members of staff.
I only booked two nights, I wish I booked for a longer stay.
Sea views
Car parking costing £10 a day Not made clear before No sky tv No entertainment Overpriced drinks menu
Location and the grounds were beautiful great for dogs
I was not happy with my room because the 2 chairs in my room had holes in then and staairs on then and the out side pool was close and had been close 4 3 months and was not told and the lounge areas was not very clean were I was sitting the view was lovely but 4 what I pay I thought the room was not woth it I wont be going again
My room and the chairs in my room I did tell staff but didt do anything
The Cosy Double was definitely not Cosy, the room was only suitable for single occupancy with the bed being against the wall. The balcony was not accessible being locked with no key. The balcony hadn't been cleaned for a long time, it was dirty. The bar now has only cider, lager and ipa beer, they have discontinued selling Guinness (apparently not making money on it) which is pretty poor for a hotel the size it is. Why not at least have bottle or can alternatives. Camden Town tends to be a good stoat to have on draft, very popular in some pubs being a cheaper alternative to Guinness! Furniture throughout the hotel needs replacing or requires refurbishing at best!
The breakfast is pretty good, staff are friendly.
Bravo!
Good location. Super lovely sea view. Lovely staff.
Unfortunately, the soundproofing between the rooms was very poor. Due to the layout of the room, my room and the neighbouring room seemed to be separated by only a connecting door, which provided almost no sound insulation. I could hear their TV very clearly and was repeatedly woken up by the noise during the night. Eventually, at around 2am, I had to call reception and ask them to intervene. This was particularly disappointing as the room itself was otherwise lovely, but the lack of soundproofing significantly affected my sleep and overall experience.
Fab location and friendly staff, fab sea views and comfy room. Great value for money.
A little dated, inside and out however, the décor more than makes up for this and I would definitely stop again.
The view from balcony
All hall ways and rooms are built up with dust
View was very good breakfast was poor the hotel was dated . We paid for room cleaning which did not happen room was noisy with the window open
parking breakfast was poor
Lovely breakfast room Staff friendly
Room not very clean dusty and needed updating
Tnhe location is great for exploring Torquay
The property is in desperate need of a makeover, dirty curtains, stains in carpets and generally very dated and tired.
Very good
Don’t be so mean with butter
sea view
nothing
Don't stay if you are given the garden room.
Views because there wasn't any even though l paid for sea views Room is the worse and l have stayed in plenty of hotels. Not worth the money.
Staff were competent
The swimming pool and fitness suite were out of action due to a burst pipe, our terrace access was blocked as works were scheduled, no fridge in room
Nice, central location.
Had to pay to park at the hotel. No mention of that when booking
We had a sea view. Amazing. Fabulous breakfast buffet. Pool and gym. Great value.
Staff were veryfriendly, facilities, food was exceptional. View was lovely We were there for a family wedding, and rooms were spectacular.
Only got 2 hours sleep as the noise coming from generator? Or extraction fan kept me awake. Even tried sleeping on the bathroom floor with the door shut. There are loungers on the balcony, but can't be used as covered in bird poo. There was some confusion about parking charges, we were there for a family wedding, so were told it was complimentary when we arrived, but when we went to get our room card, we had to pay parking as we booked through bookings.
Fantastic location. Clean and comfortable with beautiful views. Friendly and helpful staff.
Location
All good but didn’t stock Bacardi in bar !
Loved the room with sea view
Bed was not very comfortable, mattress dipped, felt like I was going to fall out
This is a difficult review to write as first stayed here 9 years ago with our grandson and had the best time! Even recommended to my friend who also visited with her family and loved it too. We have been back 3 or 4 times since, our last being this August with our now 2 grandchildren and although we had a lovely holiday, the hotel was so disappointing and it felt like they are just running it into the ground! We booked a suite so we had plenty of room and got the spectacular view. It was awful, the carpets were dirty, the wardrobe doors didn't stay closed, the separate bedroom was like a dark cupboard with no window, the bathrooms were dirty, only a few bits of old furniture in the living area, the balcony was closed off but the state of it! Full of debris, had some bodged work done that seemed to be holding the roof of it up! Breakfast was ok but no luxury involved - who ever owns this hotel, please take hold of it and bring it back to life so everyone can keep enjoying that quintessential british holiday that we love.
The location was excellent, offering great views, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, breakfast - food options excellent and quality excellent. The rooms were a good size, although a little dated, but then it is an old hotel. However, it did have a hairdryer, kettle, good selection of drinks, including water and biscuits, iron and ironing board. We had a room with a seaview balcony, that offered great views of the bay, although the ground floor extention and roof full of pigeons and seagulls did spoil it a little....but you can't have everything!
A roof full of pigeons and seagulls and the fact that pets were allowed in the hotel, leaving a slightly musty pet smell in some areas. It's a good job we didn't suffer with pet allergies, especially if they were allowed to stay in our room. The additional cost for parking, this added £30 to our stay and should be included in the price. The outside pool was closed and even thouh we used the sunloungers, there was no one on hand to issue towels or to provide a parasol. This should be looked into.
Tolles, wunderschönes Hotel in sehr guter Lage. Super Blick auf das Meer. Alles sehr schön
Es hat uns Alles gut gefallen
The cleanliness, good sized room with a balcony.
Good location
Fabulous views from the bar. Spa. Great staff. Though could do with a more comfortable seating area. Massage pool gym all great. Was it 4star. Well the reception and bar area yes in look and price i imagine the person who gave it 4star. Got 6star treatment Overall staff great, couldnt do more to help. Good room size even if vintage. Comfy bed. Was it clean,... aspects
Receptionist miserable twice check in and out. Other one shy thats ok. They were young we have all been there. Pubes and random socks in room lovely touch. Also expect them to be able to box tables properly. Not like a 3 year old gave it a go. A 1/2 star hotel could manage this. The grand hotel Scarborough you can get for £30 a night is about on par for room quality and a ability to box tables. Soap holder especially black. Seems trivial it is. But if your going to post photos of outdoor pools and rooms then charge. Least make it look like the pictures . Although everyone sells a dream! The ply wood on edge of pillars is fine. Would look better if it was painted to match the rest of the room Did I have the most expensive room no. Did I pay for a room in a 4star hotel yes Was it. Yes when Agatha Christie was alive. I also have a poriot tattoo. Its not like im not a fan
The room was exactly in the part of the hotel we had requested. The staff were very helpful and polite and it was lovely to see the same members of the team that we have seen at our previous stays.
A fridge in the room would have been very welcome. Also, there could have been a more generous supply of refreshments in the room as we only had 4 tea bags and 4 little milk sachets each day and had to ask for extra.
We booked this hotel for a strategic planning retreat for approx. 20 people. The team were friendly and helpful, the venue is stunning, the food is delicious. The group unanimously agreed we intend to return next year. Highly recommended!
We had stayed at the Imperial under the three previous owners and we had a memorable experience. This stay was memorable-but for all the wrong reasons! The toilet in our room wasn't cleaned properly, there were finger marks on the mirrors and the TV was dusty! We've been fortunate to stay in some fabulous hotels throughout the world and even the cheap places are always clean! I do fear for this once great hotel. There are better places to stay in Torquay.
This timeless hotel is am absolute oasis in Tourquay. Its sea facing rooms are amazing. The staff were very dedicated and kind. The breakfasts are fantastic and for me the choice and quality was excellent. The location is marvellous and both the beaches close.by, great for a quick swim.
We were disappointed the outdoor pool was closed but the sea being so close made up for it.
A large hotel at a reasonable price always raises the question of falling standards. The Imperial turned out to be the real thing: Good facilities, friendly staff, clean and well-furnished and decorated. The restaurant with its magnificent sea view was a wonderful place to have breakfast - and the breakfast was very good too. I dined there too and enjoyed the experience and, again, very good service. I'd booked a room with sea view and was a touch apprehensive given the way the shadow of Basil Fawlty falls over Torquay, but no need to worry, my room even had a balcony.
Not the hotel's fault but my stay coincided with a heat wave and the walk into Torquay was a minor challenge, especially coming back. But that's the reverse side of the hotel's excellent location and you can't have everything. I didn't want to use my car during my stay but could have done so which would have sorted this out. NB the car park is easy to get into and seemed to have plenty of space; another plus.
Room excellent, location excellent, breakfast very good choice,
Abit annoying that the outdoor pool wasn't open, being hot weather. Could do with some music or a singer or something in palm court ,as no atmosphere after having meal & drinks .
Room was not good thick dust on anything it could lay on radiator top and underneath. Big crack in tv wall. Balcony door windows not clean. 1 x bed light above bed linning ripped in shade. Top of skirting dirty in room Restaurant windows dirty and cobwebs. Outdoor pool closed weeds growing on patio. Dado rail in corridor dust on one end to the other. Paid £620 complained to manager told will get refunded £100 all sorted just ask on checkout. Obviously they never knew anything about conversion day before. Did get £100 back. Should have got £620 back . Was offered a upgrade if we come again instead of £100 . Apart from that weather was good would i recommend not really 1/10. Thanku and goodnight. Photos available.
The location is outstanding
N/A
View over bay unbelievable
No air con
Staff and location
Hot air con not working and dated
Room was a good size with dog bowls provided for dog. Easy access to garden area. Sea views and access to a varied breakfast in dog friendly area.
Everything was very nice.
Very pleasant helpful staff, very good breakfasts, good dinner menu and bar choices, superb views from the dining room and palm court.
Staffing levels are sometimes inadequate to cope with the volume of diners, especially at breakfast, Dinner prices could be shaded down a bit. Some bedroom features are beginning to look tired. A small point but replacing the tarnished electric sockets would be a quick win. Understandable small weaknesses given the financial climate and the huge costs likely to be involved in a major overhaul
Everything is so fantastic and clean.
Nothing
They say they have out door pool that was the only reason we booked When we asked about it staff mocked us saying its been closed for 2 years probably not going to open again False advertising We were so disappointed
Communication Breakfast was awful too
Breakfast was superb, the location ideal and fantastic views over the bay. The public areas within the hotel were ornate, impressive and fairly well maintained. The staff were attentive and helpful, fresh bottled water and biscuits in the room each day were a nice touch. Towels and bedding were good quality and the beds comfortable. Access to the indoor pool and spa area was free. The family room was very big. Free toiletries were full size and reasonable quality (not luxury however).
The outdoor pool appeared to have been closed for some considerable time which we weren't aware of, and yet remains on displays at the head of the drive into the hotel. This was a significant disappointment. The rooms at garden level where we stayed are in dire need of upgrading, furniture is worn and dirty, the patio had missing tiles, broken railings and brambles growing over from the garden, windows throughout the hotel are dirty and some are misted. The carpets throughout are worn and the exterior of the building is looking shoddy. We expected better for the price we had paid. The spa area is small with mold in much of the tiling. I feel the upkeep is being neglected which is a shame for such a historic building. The staff work hard but at times there doesn't appear enough of them.
Location
Very tired and tatty. Light bulb missing in room, phoned reception several times to ask for replacement towels, one of the towels provided initially wasn’t clean, had to go down and ask in person. Breakfast coffee machine not efficient.
Room 36 where we stayed was perfect. Be going there again without a doubt
Liked the location, had breakfast overlooking the sea. Good selection of breakfast .
The bedroom was a bit tired looking. You couldn't use the outside pool, no water in it and it hasn't been used in years ....... Had to pay to park in the hotel
Just returned from our first summer stay. Please don’t listen too all the bad reviews. As a married couple in our early 40’s we love this place. Yes it’s an older “historic” building BUT the staff and the condition are outstanding. We were booked for 2 nights but we extended our stay with ease and no drama. The Hotel: arrived early and staff were fantastic the young lady (did not get name) on Monday 17th August was great. We managed to get our room early and its was beyond words. Room 040 recently refurbed and stunning. We also had room 325 again amazing and room switch over on 19th was easy. I think (Caleb or Callum) on reception was fantastic. The rooms are big, clean and tidy with fans provided. The bar- this is just amazing in summer as you can sit outside. The bar staff were great. They always are welcoming and engaging. The prices too are even cheaper than beer in town. Average pint in hotel £5.95….. Breakfast - again amazing all the staff cannot do enough for you. The food is just great, hot, lots of it and so fresh. Hot selection and pastries what more could you want. Parking - you do have to pay parking BUT regardless of where you book through ALL sites confirm it’s £10 a night. Parking is secure and lots of it. (Sorry but what hotels don’t charge)! Cleanliness - exceptional with lots of staff always cleaning and tidying. Always happy to do extra if required. Lots of improvement works also ongoing The Hotel is clean, well presented and quirky which is why we visit every December and now go be every summer. Just waiting to re book this week for Xmas. Well done everyone… value for money and great holiday
An amazing hotel, would definately stay again
I liked the location, it was just up the road from the nightlife, the receptionist Aniyah was lovely
The restaurant staff were a little agitated, they didn't have much time to listen to my queries, the food was really bad in comparison to what I paid for it
Staff and location
Some furniture in bedrooms tired. No air-con or fans. Hotel needs to remove all advertising images about an outdoor pool which has been closed for a number of years.
