The only good thing about this hotel is the location
Everything!!!!
Nothing
Everything
I have been here several times and every time it has been lovely in the rooms I got. The food is good the staff are friendly
This time the room was a long walk from the lift very dark and the television didn’t work I asked for a different room on 2nd floor where I always ha previously stayed I got the last one still a long walk to it but it was better even though work men were out side television worked as well
We like this Hotel And Have Been Many Times
Lift broken
Location of the property was in a beautiful setting, staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was nice.
Lift was broken and out of order, saw lots of elderly people and disabled individuals struggling to access upstairs and bedrooms and toilet facilities. Bedroom very dated, not very clean, no spare pillows etc.
Had a lovely stay at this hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was relaxing. Everything was well looked after, and we really enjoyed our stay. Would happily come back!
Really helpful staff, excellent room. Couldn't have been better.
Location ok
Cleanliness noisey extractor fan in the bathroom stains on kirton and skirting boards
The location was very good and the room was lovely with a sea view
The furniture had not been dusted for some time and the top of the wardrobe was thick dust
Beautiful entrance
Our room no 4 was very disappointing for standard room. Strange low window and beam over bed- looks into back yard with building work going on. Only 1 night though so it didn’t matter too much.
Good location Staff were mostly friendly
The staff working in the room next door at 8am that we could hear word for word
Location
Rooms not cleaned everyday
Excellent location. Main areas have obviously been refurbished since our last visit. Breakfast was excellent, good quality ingredients for cooked breakfast.
Bedroom still a little teird. More attention needed to quality of paint finishes; tiles in bathroom and cobwebs on high ceilings.
Location and roof top bar
Run down hotel needs renovating
Very good comfortable hotel room. Bathroom was excellent. Check in was easy . Bed very comfortable.
Power kept tripping off toward the end of the stay.
The Staff were brilliant, the entertainment on Wednesday the 9th September was exceptional
I am a dissabled lady & the beds were terrible, I was there for 4 nights & the beds hurt my hips & made them very sore indeed. We booked the Royal because of the Swimming pool, but was unable to use it, because the lift wasn't working & the steps were too steep, so very disapointing..
Beautiful entrance hall & surrounding public rooms
Budget room was very basic. Worst painting job I’ve ever seen. Dismally small window. Great new bathroom but basics like towel rack or even hooks to hang wet towels on were none existent. Toilet roll holder broken - surely maintenance team have spare bits for refurbished bathrooms
The whole package. Food, staff, hotel and bar prices.
Power cut. The staff handled the situation well. Communication between the Royal and Grand hotels was a bit disorderly.
The bathroom needed repair and renewal. One very slow old lift was totally inadequate for the size of hotel.
Location is brilliant
Stayed a few times in the Royal, this was a last minute booking for a double room. Wouldn’t stay again if got this room, few things needed addressing, bed was wonky, toilet holder fell off the wall, sink plug didn’t work properly, took a while to get the television to work, no instructions
The location
The blood on the curtains and skirting boards. The attitude of the staff when asked for extra pillows and a cup as there was only one in the room.. The fact the room slanted from the window to the door. I nearly broke my ankle leaving the room for the first time because of the slant. The filthy mirror. The shower was either off or pressure washer, freezing or scalding, and the shower head was tiny.
Ok
The room was really hot
Didn't need breakfast thank you. Plenty of room and excellent bed, bathroom nice and clean --- but toilet kept dripping through the night.
No real problems, just the toilet dripping all night!!!
Nothing at all the first night stay we did not have a remote for the TV and was told we had to do without or leave as he claimed there was no rooms left which I checked with the website on booking.com and there was 17 rooms left I would like a refund please my overall stay was appalling
It’s close to everything
When I booked I booked a presidential suite with a sea view I got a penthouse with no view I did contact the property before we went and explained it was a special trip as it was our anniversary and my husband is on end of life care/palliative care. I spoke to the duty manager and explained everything and that I’d payed for a sea view all she said was we don’t have any other rooms and breakfast on the Sunday morning was a joke waited 20 minutes for fried eggs then had to wait another 15 minutes for mushrooms and 10 minutes for fried bread by this point the eggs were cold went to get some hot eggs and there was non left and someone was waiting and had been waiting 25 minutes and all we got told when we asked about it it’s the chief is aware
Near the tramway to the beach and close to shops and gardens. Lots of choice on breakfast buffet. Staff were very friendly. We had an excellent sea view from our room
Good breakfast buffet, clean spacious room. Good facilities (gym and pool)
Nothin
Everything
Nothing, done the job for our stay
Didn't have breakfast. Location very good.
The room and the bathroom was very clean. But the windows and corridor could do with a clean up.
Good location, two bars, good entertainment on Saturday, clean and impressive building
Just a niggle really,it isn’t made plain that the pool is extra,at least I didn’t see anything about it when booking.you have to take towels from your room,so a return journey for them
Right in the right location. Fantastic views. At the top of the funicular railway.
Faded glory. That said, you don’t go to look at the paintwork.
To be fair I've stopped here in the past which was very good but unfortunately this time the room was a little tired, plus ie no toilet rolls in bathroom, Shower was virtually hanging off the wall , the curtains where hanging off their rails plus holes in them , poor tbh

Nothing
Very helpful and friendly staff and Amazing location. Great room with sea view
The breakfast was good with plenty of choice .the room was clean but we could not access it via a lift and was on the second floor room 225.we will go back again.
The reception could have been better but we all get tiered
Location and breakfast
Not at all as clean as I expected. Bins hadn’t been emptied from previous guests . No working lights in one friends room. Disability access not great, lifts not working and despite requesting we didn’t get allocated a walk in shower, so did change room to a single but no reduction in price as we paid for a double
Nothing to dislike. It was clean .the staff friendly and helpful. We are out most of the time so don't use all amenities so can't comment on them but they all seem good
As above
The view and location. Staff were nice.
Lift was out of order. Towel rail did not work. Seagulls were so noisey from 5am.Earplugs should be offered.
The hotel was overall ok with the staff being the main advantage. They were very friendly and helpful and we had no complaints about them at all. The room was like a prison cell with just a double bed - no room other to get around the bed and into it. There was a window which was very high but this would have made little difference to our view as it was safety glass and opaque. But we only stayed one night and arrived late- 6pm, so we didn't complain. We won't stay again.
As above
Location
Dirty room damp and old Paid nearly £1000 for 5 nights and it was poor Cleaners playing music on phones outside your room Room doesn’t get cleaned or beds made whilst there
We stayed half board. The food was fantastic. We really enjoyed it. 🍲😋 A great hotel and a great stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel. 😊
Trying to find the hotel room. It was abit if a jigsaw maze. and parking.
Good location..unfortunately the room was dusty, and when in room I was always itching, whether it was fleas , bed bugs,?? Who knows
Cleanliness of room
The ball room looked amazing,The bar staff were very friendly and chatty, very art decor building , just not kept up to standard and looks ver very run down in places
room was awful, dirty and bathroom was mouldy sealant, floor flooded when used shower, sink plud didnt work, extractor fan was not working so melt drains, furniture in bedroom was tatty, light was wonky , tv remote worked the "Fan" paintwork shabby, balkony had a "Food fork" and "Coffee pot" dumped and not cleared away, were given 1 flat pillow, when asked for another the staff were not helpful at all and said "if they had a spare one we could have it" still had to go back after evening drinks to ask again, Also the lift was out and we were on the 3rd floor (Luckily we are fit and could carry our luggage up 3 flights)
The location and staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough to help x
When we checked in and got up to our room, I stood in a wet patch which appeared to be animal urine. We told reception and they said they would go up to the room to clean it. During the night we were disturbed numerous times by loud guests swearing shouting and slamming doors arguing so didn’t have the best sleep.
The entrance was stunning
The back rooms where we were placed were absolutely disgusting paper peeling from the walls, rubbish in the bins from previous guests and stains on the walls and bedding. Not worth the 119 pound each per couple, my sons room even had the window boarded up which is not acceptable
Great location, hotel rooms decent size.
Bath/shower taps not working.
Excellent central location.
Sash windows need cleaning - need a cherry picker because the room was on the fourth floor of this lovely historic building. Also cobwebs on the high ceiling. Nice spacious room though.
We like the royal, yes it’s a little bit tired but it’s relaxed it’s clean and the staff are good It’s good value for money and we can take our dog
Nothing, some would say it’s tatty and it is but it’s a good tatty if that makes sense
Nice location
Its in a good position for access to the seafront and the town
It wasn't clean. The room was red hot with no opening windows. The room was very dusty and the toilet was very stained. The bed was 2 single beds put together but they were different heights so there was a massive dip in the middle. If all that wasn't bad enough the lift was out of order. Im disabled and had to climb 2 flights of stairs up and down everytime I needed to be in or out of the room. Very disappointed and wont be staying their again.
The location is great but the only positive
The hotel is filthy ! The pool is disgusting slimy water, balls of hair everywhere and the floor was disgusting the changing rooms smelt like urine. The room was vile dust on the carpet was so thick I could write my name in it, the walls were even dirty and everywhere was covered in thick dust and previous guest belongings where still in the room they had left medication in the bathroom. This place need a fumigation ! We didn't eat here luckily hate to think what the kitchen was like
Our family room was good and spacious with a separate kids room with bunk beds. All beds were very comfy but could do with the option of an extra pillow. Had a fridge which is always a handy bonus. Iron and board by the wardrobe and a couple of large fans too. Also glad to have a shower with decent pressure which goes a long way. The hotel in general is lovely with a lot of character. There's plenty of furniture to rest
The pool area and changing rooms were grim, dirty and poorly maintained. The pool water was murky and smelt awful like battery acid. Signs to say have showers before going in the pool but showers didn't work. Hose pipe all over the floor, trip hazard for anyone with visual disabilities. No shower gel or shampoo. £21 for 2 adults and 2 children for 10mins use was not worth the money. This really let the hotel down. Only one lift working as the other one is out of order which according to some other guests we spoke to, had been the case for a while. The volume of people using the only lift available was a lot so wait times were extensive for people with mobility issues.
The beds were comfortable , and sheets clean ,also the room had enough storage space and hangers. The staff were pleasant , just not enough of them
As soon as you entered the bedroom there were hair balls on the carpet and rubbish under my bed ie an empty plastic bottle and paper .The rooms were not service at any time during our three day stay and I never witnessed any hoovering of corridors or stairs . The worst was the swimming pool which we paid to enter ,it was like entering a damp cave with black mould visible ,the changing room was dirty with wet hair all over the floor. My daughter and I got changed but when we saw the murky water and the surrounding smell of rodent we could not go in .
Very good location in central Scarborough
Room windows were high up and went out onto an occupied outside area
Location and it's an historic hotel
Disinterested reception staff
Room was fantastic as it seemed we were upgraded from our original booking. Room 107 fantastic accommodation and great sea view. Only mention is there is no air conditioning so would be extremely hot in the summer months but fans were provided in the room.
Limescale build up on bath tap could perhaps do with a bit more of a clean but didn’t spoil our stay.
The location was perfect
The staff were abrupt and not friendly The room was filthy and not maintained very well. Carpets weren’t hoovered. Dust on work surfaces. Bits of food waste everywhere. Mould in bathroom. Ceiling paper was coming off and had evidence of leaks. The door to the room was very narrow and had to be really forced to open and close. We found it difficult to get in and out. The door closer didn’t close that door. This was 347. The corridors were dirty with socks and rubbish along them. The fire doors had massive gaps underneath them so not safe.
I love it, it's the second time I've been here, but I have a 0-month-old baby and I'm coming with my family , and there's no crib for my little one. The other one doesn't fit the pram. We were carrying the stairs when we were going down, and the door is difficult for a wheelchair and a pram
The room is clean
Downstairs is ok but the rooms are terrible! Not cleaned very dated and water dripping through the ceiling.
Downstairs is ok but the rooms are terrible! Not cleaned very dated and water dripping through the ceiling.
We didn’t enjoy it at all, considering we visit every year I feel as tho the hotel has gone downhill
The room we had was terrible the bed had dints all over it, complained to reception and got moved into a different room, the radiator didn’t work so we were cold all night and didn’t get any sleep therefore we had to leave a day early and go back home
Breakfast was good and access to local shops/bars were easy.
Bathroom was like it was on a slant and there was dirt visible in multiple areas
Lovely entrance hall, decent rooms for the money
Location
Small room, everytime you pulled the flush it sounded like a motor bike for 5 minutes, the female bar tender was effing and jeffing with some idiot that must have walked in off the street drunk. Coffee stains allover wall.other hotels in the area charged £6.50,£7,£7.50 for the parking permit you charge £10 which i don't understand. Hence our stay there in September has been cancelled and moved to another hotel due to having children.
Glad that we were only staying 1 night.
The room was not clean.Through the night it rained and the carpet was wet where it was dripping from the light socket on the ceiling, luckly we did nt switch the light on, as it was 4.30 am.The spa smelt very strong of urine in changing rooms.
It was like victorian style so that made it quite nice. the staff were friendly and helpful.
The beds were SO uncomfortable and hard. We barely got any sleep at all. The bathroom was so hot it was like an oven because of the towel rack. The elevator was so unstable it was unsafe. There was no parking on the sight so it made it much difficult to carry things
Leaving to go home
The bed was rock hard i had water coming through the celling when someone above was showering and had mould growing in the bath room because it had no extraction fan, room was absolutely nowhere near up to expectations nor as the picture’s painted it to be im not a hard person to please but this has really took the biscuit, not at all happy and i am seeking to take further
The only thing I liked was when I left to go home
The room was disgusting mold and dust everywhere very dirty hotel
Excellent location friendly staff and lovely spacious room. Liked having a fridge in the room and a heater
The breakfast wasn’t great.
We stayed in a very large room, the beds were comfy, a main room with a small bedroom, both rooms had a TV, the bathroom had a bath and shower, food available, entertainment. They also have a heated swimming pool, steam room, sauna and gym £6 from 6am to 8pm,
Location was good, nice in the lobby area ,dated but can imagine it used to be a high end hotel years ago
A bit run down in the halls and bedrooms, some new carpets and paint would spruce it up a bit and a deep clean
lovely room view and location.could nt fault it
extremely mouldy bath mat
The only thing good about this hotel was the location !
The hotel room was in a terrible condition, the bathroom:- shower screen was missing panels water went everywhere, sink tap and plug broken, door handle held on with 1 screw, electric radiator in a bathroom exposed wires! Used plastic cup on floor! Loo seat didnt stay up! Bedroom:- filthy chair, drawers inside filthy, bedside cabinet, cup staines, mug wedged window open, door stop falling off. Buffet breakfast was poor! Really sorry but I i will only book direct with hotels and I've decided to stop using Booking.com
Clean and bed comfortable.
Double booked my room and another family entered while we was in there. End of the night could not gain access as they had cancelled our key card instead of the other families.
Nice entrance and bar
Rooms was not that clean and broken shower and broken toilet seat and charged me 10 pounds to use the shower down stairs and they was filthy
Grand entrance looked good
Basic room no opening windows corridor was damp and smelly
room was great lovely character
lift not working
Entrance to hotel was lovely.
Room was in the roof. Really warm open end window as much as it could and rubbish outside window was horrendous. Dirty pillow which I had to change and extremely basic. Bathroom door kept jamming.
nothing
the pool was crap, the staff might aswell have been none existent especially the bar tender the room was so uncomfortable and it was very noisy
The location
It was so unclean our room stunk and was infested with flies the bathroom had a poo in it and stunk also, the leisure facilities were diabolical so dirty and smelt like cat pee
The location is brilliant and the entrance area is fabulous along with some lovely vintage furniture. The family room was a really good spacious size for a weekend break.
The room was overwhelmingly hot! Incredibly uncomfortable heat along with rock hard beds isn't good. I had to ask for some extra pillows as the wafer thin one provided wasn't enough. The ones brought upto us had blood stains on. The window didn't open more than crack so served no purpose in trying to cool the room down for my autistic child. The card to our room wouldn't work after our 1st night so had to get that fixed. On the first evening my husband needed to use a toilet & was told then mens Is down in the cellar area where the pool is. He went and the couldn't get back up the stairs that way as the door locked so had to find another way and whilst doing that he noticed a fat rat running around down there. Unfortunately all the staff that we interacted with was absolutely miserable and made us feel like an inconvenience for doing their jobs! Be it serving drinks or fixing broken door cards as they hadn't programmed them correctly the first time. The place feels desperately understaffed and the ones that are there need to either admit hospitality isn't for them and move on or shape up and take some pride in their roles. A new cleaning company needs hiring immediately to take control of this hotel as it could be amazing.
Looked beautiful from the outside and in the entrance
Window boarded up in the bedroom Bathroom sink was slow to drain There was chocolate on the floor from previous people staying luckily I found it and not my dog. The room was extremely hot and the windows were restricted opening for safety reasons but the window was that heavy it couldn’t be opened a little as it just fell shut and there was nothing to prop it open with.
Excellant would recumend to friends
Location
Room was poorly cleaned found remote under bed wasnt the room i asked for i went with my daughter so had to seperate beds myself, windows didnt stay open also towels dirty shower was broken
Location was the winning aspect of this hotel. Everything else was a little disappointing. Rooms were very far apart, pool was very expensive with charge person and towel hire an additional fee. Parking is a challenge. Room was noisy and smelt damp. Breakfast was ok but buffet often empty and slow to refill. Location is a winner tough so if your a single traveller may be better.
Absolutely nothing is was filthy dust and stains everywhere the bed was like springs with a napkin over the top worse night of mine and my 30 week pregnant partners lives honestly it was horrible
I didn’t like anything about it £250 for 2 nights there we checked in at 8:30 pm Friday I was down at the main desk requesting to change rooms or they send me a refund because the room was absolutely disgusting stains dust marks and dead insects everywhere cob webs and everything I was so disappointed and felt physically sick and when I went to complain the staff were very unprofessional and stated they couldn’t refund me I had to go through booking.com so I contacted them shown them the evidence of the room state and they said I was well within my right to request a refund and they have asked the royal to fully refund me but they told me to cancel the booking for Saturday and they’ll refund me for that day I still haven’t been refund for the Friday and I think it’s only right I get 100% refund it was honestly the worse hotel experience I’ve ever experienced
The room was dated totally different to the pictures also the bed was a small double not a normal double ended up with a bad back
The rooms
Great location, front desk staff helpful
Room was always extremely warm, beds were quite stiff, paid for the pool but no showers around the pool or near sauna even though signs say shower before going in, most disappointed come back to have a drink in the bar to finish off the night, ordered a Malibu and coke, he served in a small glass was only half full and I said can you top it up with coke, he said he will have to charge me for an extra splash? Also the hotel doesn’t sell water?
The decoration large room friendly staff
The view from room
Location was good
Bathroom would benefit with a toilet seat that actually fits the toilet, and getting in and out of the shower was difficult could do with a hand rail to get in
Great location,Staff were helpful
Lift for disability scooters not working
Room was comfortable and pool was good.
Breakfast buffet was empty when we went to eat. No sausages, bacon or eggs.
Breakfast was overpriced. My autistic children barely ate due to cramped room, overcrowded tables. Choice limited. People cross contaminating food tomatoes stained scrambled eggs pot due to mixing spoons... slight problem for those with allergies or vegetarians mixing up serving spoons and tongs
Horrible crammed seating. Slow service due to people crowding and taking too long meaning food was going cold despite being under lamps waiting for older people to decide and serve up food. My son took a small nibble of a crossiant and couldnt eat anymore due to overcrowding room, sensory overload. I explained i had 2 registered disabled and they wanted to split us up over floor 3 and 5. I explained should a fire drill sound this makes it impossible for me to support my family. They did move us all up to floor 5 but in the event of a fire... the lifts dont work... great... also at opposite ends of the corridor... despite me asking for rooms next too or as close as possible. Rooms dirty, food wrappers under bed, hair clip left on light, dirty walls, drafty windows, a broken pin in a plug socket, stained bedding, dress pillows and throws. Very noisy family in room 515. Slow service at bar for pop drinks. Poor availability for dinner, had to wait with autistic kids until 6.45 booking. Pool was shut for maintenance when we wanted to use it sign last minute on counter. Drunk people everywhere, swearing and vaping in the building. Doors slaming all night... smokers using fire exit doors. Everything felt tired including staff. Very, very disappointed felt robbed and made to feel like liar when I presented a blank voucher for prosseco and bar man made me go back to reception for it filling in despite seeing me walk for it when I had previously asked him how I order it when I paid online... no entertainment on.
The staff were friendly and accommodating. Any questions or queries were answered.
The cleanliness of the hotel is subpar. In my room there was sweets wrappers, cutlery and mess under my dressing table. My mams room had dirt behind couch and a coke can under her bed. I had to ask them to clean room 306 and 327. 327 was stained carpets, none of skirting boards cleaned and a smell. As well as the mess mentioned above. Bar staff very moody. I understand they're busy but not very pleasant at all. Was noted by not only myself but other people in que waiting.
Area was great .staff lovely.
Was only 1 lady on the bar serving and taking drinks to customers...really needed more staff on bar through day..we had to wait ages in a queue..
