Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Checked in early & room superb, ground floor, 2 easy chairs. Super bathroom with bath & separate shower.
First 2 mornings at breakfast was a shambles. Buffet style but table with choices not clean, lots of dropped food (scrambled egg/ beans/tomato). I asked for poached eggs but told not available! One tray with one choice of ham & one choice of cheese! Not enough waiting staff.
Stunning views, friendly, professional staff. The spa staff and treatments were fabulous as were the facilities. Breakfast included was lovely however could have been warmer and a little more organised.
£25 per night for the car park I feel was expensive and overpriced. Breakfast was lovely but there appeared to be a lack of staff to organise it well. Food was a little cold.
الموقع على البحيرة
We had lovely rooms overlooking the lake. Location of the hotel was perfect by the kae and easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. Breakfast had a full range of hot food ordered from a menu and cold continental buffet style. The breakfast room had a lovely view overlooking the lake. It was very nice to recieve complimentary bottled water each day.
The main room door was not very soundproof with noisy guests talking loudly outside and hearing every word spoken. Bathrooms were a little cramped. Had trouble operating the safe. Parking for £25 a day is a bit steep.
In a good place
Breakfast was very poor - coffee no better than water and food had dried out before serving
Location and building were lovely. Staff resolved any queries quickly. Comfy bedrooms.
Wi-Fi was a bit intermittent. Breakfast menu needs updating regarding accurate allergen information. More seating around the pool would also be a bonus.
Great location and pool and spa were excellent
Breakfast service was very slow and not clearly structured. Bar closed at 2200 if not before.
Location
Amazing area. More than we expected, fabulous area, the air show from the aircraft over head was incredible and unexpected, spa, reception breakfast was fantastic Highly recommended
Nothing
Location was perfect
I didn't like we had to pay £75 for parking, the breakfast was very poor, the sausages were solid. The hotel was lacking attention to detail. I know it is an old building, but it was very tired. Round the pool was dirty with clumps of hair. We paid £35 per night on top of the £500 and odd we paid (and the £75 parking) for an up grade. The view was lovely and the bed was comfy but very underwhelming for the price!
The location is fabulous - right on the lake shore in the heart of Bowness on Windermere close to all the shops and restaurants
Where to start …. It is so sad that Macdonald have let this iconic hotel become so tired and shabby. I suppose for as long as people are willing to spend £250 per night they won’t invest - but it really is well past its best. The staff need to have a property they are proud to work in not the bored, quiet indifference that seems to pervade the Old England. Stick to the cereals on the breakfast - my partner had a really bad stomach after the eggs. Also if you do end up staying there and find yourself in room 307 - check whether the vibrator left by a previous inhabitant is still under the bed side table. We did tell reception it was there but I’m far from confident they would remove it.
Location is excellent. Food is superb and staff are lovely.
In a great location. We had a lake view from our room.
Breakfast was very disappointing. We book Macdonald hotels because they normally have great hot freshly cooked breakfasts. This time it was a buffet because of “problems in the kitchen.” The food was lukewarm, the sausages had been reheated at least once and the scrambled egg left a lot to be desired. Macdonald hotels are not cheap and when the reason you booked is not up to scratch it is very disappointing.
The location was fantastic
The room was small, and not well maintained. It was dusty and had stains. You had to pay £25 per night for parking that we weren't made aware of before we arrived. The TV didn't work. And the lights in the room were on a time. When I told staff on reception they just smirked.
Not good Location ok
A lot of the cooked breakfast was cold Would not cook poached or boiled eggs on request only scrambled eggs Fire alarm went off twice while having breakfast 2 different days had to evacuate Gas problem so could not cook eggs or serve fish chips View not panoramic as displayed on booking .com website Overall not good value for money and not as described in booking .com booking page! Towels dirty Basin cracked No LUXURY shampoo or conditioner as described on booking com website Wardrobe doors kept coming off runners Bar costs extortionate 15.00 for an Approl Food bland and not hot Heater in room not working No concierge on arrival Tv difficult to navigate WiFi poor or not working Main bar area paper hanging off ceiling very tired Corridors same very tired Staff moaning about lack of staff when questioned about service Ice available in room and notice says call reception for ice no phones in room !!!!
Location
Room had a tiny window Adjoining room so noisy Hot and cold running shower at same time Breakfast cold and only scrambled eggs as the staff said they had no gas which i thought was ridiculous as i asked for boiled egg or fried egg Whole place needs a facelift its like an old peoples home
The breakfast was cold and the toast was really thin not like the crusty toast we have been used to in other hotels!
The food
The ladies on reception were all friendly.
Breakfast is always a bit of a gamble, sometimes warm sometimes not. Buffet style this time which was better than waiting from the kitchen, which is invariably lukewarm.

The location was excellent, the views of the lake were spectacular. Staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. Food was very good but drinks a little pricey.
Could do with a little TLC in areas but overall very good.

Breakfast was ok
The lounge and view
Staff were ok, really busy so understandable that they weren't particularly attentive. Leisure facilities good, and breakfast good when it arrived.
We were charged £396 for one night in a kings size room with breakfast, so expected it to be unreal. However, we soon realised that Macdonald had double the price of a room as it was BH weekend - this was really disappointing. The real kicker came when they charged us another £25 to park the car over night....so £420 for one night with parking. Not blaming the hotel for exercising their right to hike prices in peak, but at the very least it should be first class at that money.
Very friendly staff, rooms, beautiful, fantastic location and your food and breakfast was exceptional.
We liked everything about the property.

Fantastic location have stayed many times before and love its location Had 2 elderly people in our party this time ,did not realise you have to phone to get a room within the main hotel if you have access issues.Lady on reception was lovely and managed to change rooms so that our needs where met 😊
Only one tiny lift ,struggled to get wheelchair and the person pushing in the lift at the same time .Also a lot of the rooms are only accessible via stairs so not great for people with mobility issues . Could do with an update some of the furniture very worn. had breakfast early and went for a walk came back for a pot of tea in the lounge but no drinks available till 10:30 am when the bar opened.
What a special place! I felt transported to the setting of an Agatha Christie novel. So much character. Afternoon tea was special, the views ans sunsets beyond words and staff (especially Caitlin who went above and beyond to make our stay super special)
Where to start? Room - First. The toilet seat bracket came off on the third day of our holiday. We reported to Reception when we left to go out for the day, when we returned it still hadn't been fixed. I was furious. We had ten spiders in Room 327, they climb the ivy covered wall and come in out of the rain. Perhaps if housekeeping had dusted behind the pelmet in the last few months, they wouldn't have inhabited the bedroom! We got rid of six and then told them they need to clean the room thoroughly. The shower was asthmatic, literally no hot water and the pressure in the garden room extension or just or room? was so low, you couldn't really get clean down under! TMI, well it is the truth, warts and all. I asked at time of booking for a room without stairs, the garden rooms have a lot of stairs, make sure they don't put you in that wing, if you have mobility issues. Breakfast Buffet - only the 2nd worst of all time. They take your room no, sit you down, but while the girls and one of the male members of staff are good, two of the younger lads were hopeless. Wrong tea, no bananas. The water melon is left out with no ice under it, I got an upset stomach from it the 3rd day. Don't eat this option, it is out for more than 20 mins, non-chilled which means it will be on the turn! The cooked breakfast comes lukewarm ... no choices of coffee, only plain black with milk. The bread is thin brown supermarket quality! Absolutely horrid! The overall choice for breakfast is appalling. The options for cooked breakfast, there is a supplement for anything that is an extra, ie Smoked Salmon on a muffin with Hollandaise Sauce extra £6.00, there is an avocado option, again £6.00 supplement. We have stayed at a couple of 4* hotels in the UK and although this hotel might have the facilities to make it a 4* hotel the service and attention to detail you get is very relevant. One of the Receptionist and young lady of Asian Heritage was lovely, a blonde older lady was so very snotty, unfortunately, love I am paying your wages, perhaps you could offer a smile and some helpfulness along the way. Toiletries in the room, having read that the rooms came with complimentary Bramley toiletries, I didn't pack conditioner, or body lotion etc. Only to find a single dispensary of hair and body wash in the room. I swam several days and to be honest with you, the spa only had one shower at the end in the Ladies Changing Area that had hot water. As our room shower was so bad, I used that shower for the remainder of the holiday after a swim, but again, only one dispense on the wall. The food in the hotel for dinner was poor. I ordered lamb rump it was over cooked and where the chef had caught it on the pan it was burnt, he put that on the bottom. It was definitely not worth the £32.00 charged. I enjoyed my holiday on the whole, probably because we simply used the hotel as a base, best bit about the hotel was the pool and the view. Meals in Bowness are better taken outside of the hotel. This hotel really needs to up its game, it is trading on its location, view and previous reputation. The Bean counters of this hotel chain need to realise that there is plenty of choice in the area ... If we did come again, we will be going to another hotel we had dinner in that makes this one look like Faulty Towers ... our description for it!
We had a lovely stay at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa, enjoying a fantastic location right on the shores of Lake Windermere. Our room and the hotel itself have a traditional feel and, while some areas would benefit from modernisation, the beautiful setting more than makes up for it. The service from the staff was excellent throughout our stay. A special mention must go to 'Ashima', who was exceptionally helpful, friendly and supportive and really helped make our stay enjoyable. We stayed on a half-board basis. The food was ok, although this was not the highlight of the stay. The spa, however, was excellent and a real bonus, providing a great opportunity to relax and unwind. The location is one of the hotel's biggest strengths. Our view looked out towards the lake and yachts.
Booked a luxury spa afternoon with afternoon tea for 2. Spa is very basic- one pool, steam room/ sauna & ice room. Steam room was freezing and dirty. No hot water for showers afterwards. No robes/ slippers provided, no way of getting a drink (even water). Ice room had an open door leading to an electrical room- serious safety issue. No hot tubs. Afternoon tea was very nice but price of alcoholic drinks was a fortune (£13 per glass of wine) Unfortunately won’t be back!
Great location very friendly receptionists
Nothing, its old but could be so much better.
Not very much.
The view of the lake, lovely gardens, lovely breakfast, comfortable room.
Quite a walk to the room, seemed far away.
Friendly staff great location Fabulous room Great breakfast
Nothing
Great location, spotlessly clean, spacious bedroom & bathroom. The food was delicious and so much choice and all of the staff were so incredibly friendly and helpful. The housekeeping staff do an incredible job. Our room was made up everyday and spotlessly clean. Lovely pool and spa facilities. We will definitely be back and hopefully we will manage to squeeze in a spa treatment next time.
Nothing.
The good points first., this is a lovely old hotel and the interior is well kept. Food was excellent and give this a 10 out of 10. Bed lovely and comfy and towels in bathroom Fab. A complimentary bottle of wine and a few chocolates left for us too. It was nice the room was on the ground floor as my husband isn’t great on his feet at times. I had a nice treatment in the spa. The hotel receptionist said “we’ve got a nice Suite room for you” on check-in so I thought we’d been upgraded. 😂 All the staff lovely and helpful and brought my husbands birthday cake out at the end of his birthday meal that I’d brought with me. The not so good points…, we were celebrating my husbands 70th birthday so I booked a deluxe balcony room for a bit of added luxury.., that said I have to say for the price we paid I don’t feel the room we had should be called deluxe, yes it had a balcony but It didn’t lend itself to being deluxe.., yes lovely view when stood up but once sitting down on the balcony furniture all you see is the concrete balcony wall.., Maybe a glass panel could be fitted to the front of the balcony as to appreciate the views when relaxing on the sun bed or chairs. Stepping back into the “deluxe room” from the balcony a tatty piece of left over carpet was in place by the doors to catch any mucky feet marks.., a great idea but wouldn’t a nice looking runner rug look much better than a frayed piece of carpet that kept ruching up and I kept tripping on. The “main” portion of the room was, I felt quite small to actually be called deluxe, bedside tables and lamps ok., small table in the corner and two comfy easy chairs all seemed squashed together., not spacious. Very disappointed. There was a what looked like a fridge in a cupboard but was neither use nor ornament as it wasn’t cold and could not see anyway to switch it on.., called at reception to say the fridge wasn’t working to be told it was probably not a fridge just a cooler.., 🤷♂️ as I said neither use nor ornament. Finally was surprised the hotel bar only opened until 10pm as on the second night we sauntered back a few minutes after 10pm thinking we’d have a nightcap only to find it all shuttered up. Clearly no residents bar, would have been nice if it had stayed open till at least 11pm.., that said quite a few of the quieter pubs in the area stopped serving at 10pm too. Wouldn’t spend the money on this particular deluxe room again.., “it isn’t what I would call this.
Amazing location and lovely staff.
Just the location !!!
I didn’t like the room !! Small , no fridge to put my medicine , no phone in the room to call for help or assistance!! No wifi , not working !! In addition I have my own SIM card but I am not able to use it !! There was a big problem !!
clean, great location. The food was really nice, lush spa and gym. Staff were great
Slightly dated and old fashioned but we knew it was going to be like that from the photos so wasn’t a Suprise
Couldn't fault the hotel or staff great location
The only thing was the uncertainty around the parking I realise parking is a premium in the area and space around the hotel is minimal but slightly disappointing we couldn't book priority parking actually onsite plus £25 to park in an unkept car park didn't feel very welcoming
Facilities
The price of wine large malbec small rose _28.00 won't be back in staff really nice but Mark up on that

The lakeside setting is beautiful, but the hotel didn’t live up to 4‑star standards. Check‑in was meant to be 4pm and we didn’t get into our room until after 5pm. Parking is £25 per night, which is extremely steep, especially when nearby long‑stay parking is less than half that price for three nights. Unfortunately, that car park was already full when we arrived, so we had no choice but to pay the hotel’s rate. Bar prices were also very high compared to local pubs, and as a result the bar and lounge areas were empty and had no atmosphere. Our room was clean but dated, with maintenance issues that should have been sorted. Most staff were pleasant, though a couple were rude, which didn’t help the overall experience. Breakfast was basic, and the spa is showing wear. Overall, the hotel relies heavily on its location. The parking charges and bar pricing feel like daylight robbery, and the stay simply didn’t justify the cost.
Great location and views
The location is fantastic with a lovely view of Windermere form the Bar & Restaurant. The food on our 1st night & the breakfast on the 1st morning was good quality. The size of the room & ensuite was good.
On arrival the receptionist looked a bit scruffy, its a small thing but he looked like he had slept in his shirt. The Hotels car park costs £25 per day to use. I upgraded our room to a Deluxe Double room. Although the room was of a very good size, it was very warm & there is No air conditioning, although there was a fan provided, you have to open the windows to get some cooling. However, the room overlooked the rear of the hotel & the bins of Pub opposite, with the noise from them which made the stay a bit unpleasant. When you upgrade a room you don't expect to be at the rear of the hotel. When you go to get breakfast, you are asked if you want Tea or coffee & your choice of toast, which is great. However I don't want to start my breakfast with toast & want my toast hot with my cooked breakfast or at the end of my breakfast. On our 2nd morning when I asked for the toast at the end of our cooked breakfast, it seemed to totally throw the staff because we didn't get the tea or toast we ordered, our order for cooked breakfast wasn't taken, & then when we ordered our cooked breakfast, the tea & toast arrived together instead of the toast being delivered later, my partners cooked breakfast didn't arrive at the same time as mine, which we had to point out to the staff, then my breakfast was cold, On pointing this out, staff took my breakfast back to the kitchen, & warmed it up under the grill, spoiling the breakfast when it was brought be along with my partners breakfast. I sent both breakfasts back asking for fresh to be sent out at the same time. Unfortunately the eggs were cooked wrong but at that point I gave up!
The location Friendly Staff
Very old used furniture. No elevator for our rooms. We have to carry our luggage in stairs Not very clean.
Central
Very tired hotel, needs a face lift. Breakfast poor
Lovely location
The fact that I paid over £400 for one night and it seriously needs a revamp. I’ve got photos to complain in an email, the room was really run down, mucky, broken remote, hair in shower, few more issues.
Location
Room was overpriced for the size. Parking was not well explained. Facilities fir parking were not great. Staff were abrupt.
The spa was nice, especially the pool staff very pleasant
Room we booked was a superior lake view which was hardly superior in any way. The bed was extremely soft and uncomfortable. The window overlooking the lake was small. On the window ledge outside metal rods had been glued presumably to deter birds but most had fallen off onto the balcony below where they remained the whole time we were there. The hotel whilst cleaned regularly by the staff, who were pleasant and obliging, definitely needed a lot of renovation and was extremely tired. Breakfast choice was limited especially the buffet with even a charge of £6 if you wanted to order anything cooked that wasn't a full English or vegetarian/vegan alternative. A charge of £ 25 per night for the car park that was at least 500 yards from the hotel was extortionate, however on complaining that was reduced to £12. I have stayed in Macdonald hotels before and all of them were better than this.
The location and the views are the only thing that make this hotel worth visiting. The hotel is very much in need of refurbishment. The floors creak outside all the rooms, the decor is very dated. Our room had feather pillows and I'm allergic so asked at reception for a hypoallergenic pillow. After an hour they managed to bring 1. 1 hypoallergenic pillow available in the whole hotel. So I had that but my partner still had a feather pillow next to me so I still suffered effects of my allergy. Next morning they managed to find another one. The mattresses are really soft and lumpy and uncomfortable. I slept terribly. Breakfast food was nice but the wait to even be allocated a table was ridiculous. 1 member of staff showing each group to a table, taking order and then disappearing for ages before coming to get the next group. There were always plenty of tables available so they need to come up with a better system to get everyone in. The pool area and spa was nice. We had treatments booked and enjoyed those. Overall, this hotel is massively overpriced for what it is.

Food supplement of £6.50 for poached eggs and salmon eggs were more like boiled salmon was served warm very slow and it wasn't that busy food dropped on the floor and all the staff just walked passed it 30 mins and was still there
The location and the views are incredible. Those and the spa are the only good things about this hotel

We spent four nights at the Old England Hotel. It is a hotel with genuine character, an exceptional lakeside location and many remarkably kind staff members. At the same time, we felt that the day-to-day operation of the hotel did not quite match the standard suggested by its setting and price. The location is simply outstanding. Situated directly on the shores of Lake Windermere, the hotel enjoys magnificent views across the lake from many of the rooms as well as from its beautiful terrace. The public areas are among the hotel’s greatest strengths. The recently refurbished lounges successfully combine traditional elegance with a lighter, more contemporary feel and are wonderful places to relax after a day exploring the Lakes. The excellent indoor swimming pool is another real asset. Our suite was spacious, comfortable and well maintained. We appreciated the calm and timeless style of our room, and the carefully restored furniture reflected the care taken to preserve the character of the building. Several members of staff deserve particular praise. Throughout our stay, we encountered genuine kindness and a willingness to help that left a lasting impression. When our daughter unexpectedly became ill, several members of the team showed remarkable compassion and continued to ask after her over the following days. Their concern felt entirely genuine and exemplified the kind of hospitality that cannot simply be taught. The restaurant and breakfast room were the least convincing part of the hotel. The dining room itself felt rather dated and lacked the elegance and atmosphere found elsewhere in the hotel. Dinner reflected a traditional British style of cooking, with well-executed classic comfort-food dishes that suited the character of the hotel well. Breakfast was the weakest aspect of our stay. The cooked-to-order dishes were good, but the continental buffet was surprisingly limited for a hotel in this price range. Coffee quality was consistently poor throughout our stay and well below what we would expect from a hotel at this level. Given its price, we expected more consistency and attention to detail in the hotel’s day-to-day operation. There were a series of small moments that, taken together, created the impression that several well-known shortcomings had simply become accepted rather than addressed. What ultimately made the difference was the staff, whose warmth and commitment repeatedly turned potential frustrations into positive memories. The Old England Hotel stays true to what it sets out to be: a traditional English lakeside hotel with character, an outstanding setting and genuine hospitality. Overall, this is a hotel with character rather than polished perfection. Guests who value consistency and attention to detail will find its shortcomings frustrating. Those who are prepared to overlook them will find an outstanding location, a distinctive atmosphere and moments of genuine hospitality.
Staying here now and lovely room but the supposedly lake view balcony is not a lake view !!...it's just the white balcony wall!!.. can't see anything sat down ..you have to stand up to see the lake!!..and a lovely car park to our right !!...and at 800 quid for a 2 nights stay ..not worth it..false advertising!!..shame because actual room is lovely...and a rude lady on reception!!... avoid balcony rooms !!..
Overall a very disappointing stay in this hotel. The hotel itself is very shabby, paint peeling off the walls, discoloured and worn carpets. It needs a lot of TLC to bring it up to par to other hotels I’ve stayed in charging the price it does. I’ve added a few pictures but this was generally what it was like throughout the whole hotel. The breakfast is very basic, there is a supplement charged for anything outside of an English breakfast or a sandwich. Again for the price being charged I would’ve expected a much bigger range. We stayed for 2 nights and had to pay an extra £50 to park our car. We also paid an extra £60 to upgrade our room to a lakeview which ended up being more of a garden view. If you want to use the spa facilities you need to get there early as there is very limited seating around the pool. Overall we were very disappointed with our stay and wouldn’t return. This hotel definitely needs to think about lowering their prices as the services we received definitely didn’t warrant it.
I was treated to a night away at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa in Bowness as a special present for an occasion—and while there were definitely highlights, the overall stay was a bit of a mixed bag! We started at the spa, which was nice enough, though I was a bit baffled to find there is actually no hot tub/hydrotherapy pool in the leisure facilities. When you book a spa break for a treat, soaking in a hot tub is pretty much top of the wishlist, so that was a bit of a letdown right out of the gate. Things picked up significantly in the evening. The dinner was lovely—delicious food. Unfortunately, sleep was a challenge. Our room felt like a sauna on full blast, and to make matters worse, the windows couldn’t be opened to let in any fresh Cumbrian air. We tossed and turned most of the night trying to cool down. The next morning, we headed down for breakfast. The food was fine once it arrived, but we ended up waiting nearly an hour and a half for it. To their credit, staff acknowledged the delay and kindly removed the charge from our bill, which we appreciated. However, the delay at breakfast threw our entire morning schedule off. By the time we got back upstairs to pack, it was 11:05 AM—a grand total of five minutes past the 11:00 AM checkout time. Apparently, those five minutes were a critical breach of hotel security, as we were promptly tracked down and harassed by the housekeeping team to clear out immediately. Nothing rounds off a "relaxing" spa treat quite like a high-stakes, 300-second eviction countdown! Overall: Beautiful location and a fantastic evening meal, but between the missing hot tub, the tropical room temperature, breakfast delays, and the eager checkout patrol, it fell short of what a special gift should be.
Konumu, temizliği, manzarası ve sakinliği
Odamız manzaraları denmesine rağmen en köşede ve neredeyse küçük bir yerden göl görüyordu, çoğunlukla bahçe ve yeşillik vardı manzarada.
Location
Was not clean. Dead flies on the window sill having breakfast, large Beatles walking across the dining room. The room was like a sauna giving it was facing the lake and no air con. The room also had a smell that wasn’t pleasant. For the money you pay it was such a shame and feel robbed.
Amaizing!♥️😘
L’emplacement mais c’est vraiment le seul point positif.
Établissement vieillissant, moisissures dans la salle de bain, propreté médiocre, équipement HS, manque la climatisation ou une solution permettant d’aérer la chambre.
Location is amazing
Room was extremely hot and despite asking , two nights were like hot oven , no telephone available availability in room , not worth staying this time , bad experience
Lovely hotel so close to the centre and gorgeous view .
The lack of staff late in a night to get water for the room.
Friendliest welcome from person at spa
An idyllic spot, however we did not feel the service met our expectations as we spent hundred of pounds on two rooms this weekend. No milk in room, no coffee machine. £6 additional charge for breakfast specials?
Location
Faded elegance. Needs massive upgrade
It's location is good
It's old and there is no air-conditioning system. There was a noisy fan in the room

Good location
Very dated interior in desperate need of a complete overhaul. We booked their Premier suite, it was tired, decoration very poor, carpet dirty. Needs total refurbishment.
Location was great, as was the breakfast
A bit noisy and the walk to parking

Location was excellent Breakfast was excellent
Car parking was charged as a extra at £25 per night
The view from our room was superb
Initially first 2 rooms offered were not acceptable. Hotel is very tired with worn out furniture and decor. Some staff were just rude. A used napkin and dirty glasses were under a table in a lounge for the duration of our stay. Needs a major refurbish to justify the rates charged.
Everything was perfect
Nothing to complain about.
Beautiful old building full of character. Great family room with bunk beds for the children in an alcove so that they had their own little area. Fantstastic location. Staff were friendly and professional. Breakfast was great and cooked to order and coffee and toast arrived almost immediately. A Steinway in the sprawling lounge! Friendly and quick room service.
It was very hot and we only had a fan but I appreciate this heat is unusual for Windermere and there is not much one can do about.
We stayed for one night in two double rooms on Sat 11/7. We paid £580 in total to include breakfast, ave £290 per room. This is our third time staying here and we have been relatively happy before. The location is fantastic and the views are amazing. However, this time we were struck by the poor value for money. We have stayed in much more luxurious hotels for much less. One of our rooms (302) smelled of mould and must, had ripped furniture and dirty windows. The other (303) was fine. Did not smell and, whilst a little traditional and stiflingly hot, it smelled fresh and was clean. When we approached reception about 302 he did change the room but was not very pleased or apologetic and was more concerned about whether we had already used the toilet or sat on the bed! Breakfast was acceptable, made to order, but certainly not of the quality we would expect for the price. Towels and robes are grey, scratchy and in need of replacement. Whilst there is a charm to this hotel it is clearly in need of some refurbishment.
Wonderful location, once you’ve navigated the car parking! Very welcoming staff, beautiful room & view. Spotlessly clean and well signed-up internally to navigate your way around the different levels. Absolutely worth spending a little more for a lake view room!
The staff and food were exceptional in the restaurant! However the general dining room itself could do with some attention; particularly the broken glass windows and condensation which spoilt the view and atmosphere of the experience a little. However, the food both in the evening and the following morning was faultless which made the decor something small to be noticed when placed against the quality and service. Outside seating was plentiful, but again requires attention with peeling black paint off the metal chairs (which stuck to our skin!) and broken wicker-style chairs which were quite sharp in areas - particularly the ones outside of the pool/spa.
Fantastic stay at the Old England, staff and food was fantastic and what a view
Great location to explore windemere. Convenient for boat trip & dining out.
Expensive parking, but that's the lake district for you.
It has a great location and the bedroom was clean.
It was quite dated however a member of staff was absolutely disgusting, from the moment he saw us as a group he was horrible and rude, he asked for our room number for the tab so we gave it him, we then went to pay the tab off before even leaving the bar (as we were going to split the bill) he purposely ignored us after repeatedly saying excuse me, so we walked off. Hours later after having a lovely dinner in the local village we heard a man shouting so we turned around and this member of staff was running after us shouting you need to pay your bill you need to pay your bill! I’ll lose my job if you don’t, the entire hotel are looking for you, they’ve been to your room to find you, if you don’t pay you won’t be allowed in your room, we were absolutely mortified and we went back to the hotel to speak to a manager, he also lied about his name and said his name was another member of staff (obviously knew he was going to be in trouble!) we then said we don’t feel ok paying the outstanding bill for the bar tab (not because of the money obviously) but because we felt the hotel should be accountable for a member of staff they had by the way only JUST hired! They said 30% off which we don’t think was good enough and we will definitely not be returning!
We stayed in a two bedroom suite with sky light windows that opened, therefore no issues without AC but no view and no screens so had to close it more to avoid the pigeons getting in. That said, the room was large, bed comfortable, large bathroom, no noise, lots of room for luggage. Bathroom did not have enough room for both toiletries bags. Great shower. Classic lounge. Would highly recommend.
The hotel is tired and needs a big renovation the rooms for the price are very expensive and not worth it.
The rooms are very basic
Location
The staff
Awful staff, filthy rooms, rude behaviour by those serving and not a good experience. Really recommend to book elsewhere.
Beautiful hotel and location. Here is the best way to do it: We stayed in room 20, which had the most comfortable bed ever, a bath and separate shower and a mini fridge so we were able to keep our drinks cold. It also had a balcony lake view. Book through wowcher = cheaper rates. Request room 20 over the phone. Spa- before 9am and after 5pm are quieter, meaning you can enjoy to it's full potential. No hot tub but that doesn't bother us anyway. Parking- park on Glebe road, pay for 8 hours (£8.80) - move the car to the council bays at 6-7pm (free overnight parking until 9am) you then have 2 hours to return to your car (11am) perfect for checkout time. Total cost 8.80 instead of 25 pounds. Its a 5 minute walk to the hotel from these spaces. I have no idea why people are complaining so much. The only (very small let down) was the cooked breakfast was a little underdone for my liking, but the continental breakfast was nice. 10/10 would stay again and book room 20!
Breakfast was excellent, good meal and very good staff. Location, excellent, with some excellent and relaxing sitting areas. Staff were very good, thank you. Bedroom very small and cramped with a dull view of a neighbouring building. Disappointing.
A better room, with a bit more space and, at least, a modest view of the lake. Otherwise, a good experience. A particular thanks to excellent staff, very young, but knowledgeable and always willng to help.
Had a spa day yesterday first of all the receptionist is quite abrupt and rude. As the treatment I had a manicure my nails were awful I could certainly do better myself. Afternoon tea was mediocre certainly not worth the price
The hotel enjoys a superb location, especially convenient for shopping, and the views are truly lovely. The team are warm, friendly, and a pleasure to interact with.
Breakfast was satisfactory, though several items required an additional supplement, which felt unexpected. Throughout our four‑day stay, my party and I were never asked about allergies or dietary requirements, despite requesting non‑dairy milk each morning. At check‑in, we were advised that the spa would remain open until 8pm on weekdays and close earlier on weekends; however, we were not informed that Fridays were treated as part of the weekend, which unfortunately meant we missed the opportunity to use the facilities. It is a good hotel overall, though at present the experience aligns more closely with a 3 out of 5. A more proactive approach to dietary awareness, clearer communication around facility hours, and greater transparency regarding breakfast supplements would significantly enhance guest confidence and comfort, and addressing these areas could meaningfully elevate the overall guest experience and strengthen the hotel’s reputation for attentive service.
It is very close to lake Windemere and fantastic view over the lake, but there is no off loading space, and the hotel carpark is a distance away, so it was difficult to retrieve anything forgotten to be off loaded. The rooms are spacious, but there was no air condition during the hot weather, difficult to sleep in the night. The signage is not very clear, there were a lot of corridors and turning with no clear signage. It was not very clear where what is. There was no trolley for luggage nor any concierge to help taking the luggages into the room! And the lifts were not large enough for stroller and luggages at the same time.
Property is old but still a nice location.
The flexibility of the staff could have been better. My mother was staying alone in a double room for two people, with breakfast included. They refused to allow two of us to join her for breakfast, even though we would obviously have paid for the additional people. This was disappointing, so we ended up going somewhere else for breakfast despite having already paid for breakfast for two with the room. It was a small request, but the response was poor. Also, £10.50 for a small white wine officially makes it the most expensive drinks in bowness! Madness for an average hotel.
